- 0:33over this pulpit. You know, when I come here, I
- 0:35ask, what don't they know? Go to your app.
- 0:41Look of the riches of the teaching there from your pastor.
- 0:47So, you know, you struggle to say what don't they know?
- 0:49So I'm just going to tell you what you already know.
- 0:52And I don't mind that because Peter and, and Paul wrote the
- 0:57same things. We're just going to tell you.
- 0:59We're just going to remind you of things you already know.
- 1:04And there's health in that because to be reminded about
- 1:10grace and mercy and love and peace, also sin and repentance
- 1:17and coming to the Lord. I I I love that as as Josh
- 1:22pointed out in Psalm 86, go home and reread it again.
- 1:26But that verse for you, Lord, our good and ready to forgive
- 1:29and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon you.
- 1:33Well, that in a sense goes right along with our message this
- 1:37morning. So let's turn to John chapter 8.
- 1:41I've entitled this message, Grace changes everything.
- 1:49Grace changes everything. How many you believe that grace
- 1:53changes everything? Amen.
- 1:55Praise God it does, man. In 1981, I picked up a Bible
- 2:01that was given to me six months earlier and I began to read the
- 2:05Bible. It was King James.
- 2:08It was, you know, the begats, because I always learn when you
- 2:11got a book, read it from the beginning, right?
- 2:14So I got a book. I began to read it.
- 2:17This guy big at that guy. I couldn't even say those names
- 2:20except the Mexican ones Perez and but but I got to verse 21 of
- 2:28Matthew 1 and you should call his name Jesus where he will
- 2:32save his people from their sins. And I'm telling you, man, well,
- 2:37you guys know you come to the Lord already.
- 2:40It's just scales fell from my eyes, from my heart and it was
- 2:45just a brand new day, man. It was just a beautiful day.
- 2:48Everything in California, everything turned into color.
- 2:53It went from black and white to color, and it was just a
- 2:56wonderful time. So we'll kind of see this in our
- 2:59story as well, but just keep that in mind that the grace
- 3:04Jesus, everything. Let's look at chapter 8,
- 3:06beginning with verse one. But Jesus went to the Mount of
- 3:12Olives. Now early in the morning he came
- 3:15again into the temple, and all the people came to him, and he
- 3:19sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the
- 3:22Pharisees brought to him a woman caught in adultery.
- 3:27And when they had set her in the midst, they said to him,
- 3:32Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery in the very act.
- 3:40Now Moses in the law command us that such should be stoned.
- 3:46But what do you say? And this they said, testing him,
- 3:50that they might have something of which to accuse him.
- 3:54But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger,
- 3:59as though he did not hear. So when they continued asking
- 4:04him, he raised himself up and said to them, He who is without
- 4:07sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.
- 4:11And again he stooped down and wrote on the ground than those
- 4:16who heard it being convicted by their conscience.
- 4:21Well, they went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even
- 4:24to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and
- 4:28the woman standing in the midst. And when Jesus had raised
- 4:33himself up and saw no one but the woman, he said to her,
- 4:38Woman, where are those accusers of yours?
- 4:43Has no one condemned you? And she said no one, Lord and
- 4:49Jesus said to her, neither do I condemn you go and what?
- 4:55Send no more. So Father, again, thank you God
- 4:58for the worship. Thank you for getting us
- 5:01vertical with you, Lord. Thank you that we can just set
- 5:04aside God, this day, our schedules, the things we want to
- 5:08do and just for the next few minutes we focus on your word.
- 5:15I pray that we you go beyond my notes.
- 5:17God, I pray you speak to us individually and
- 5:21congregationally, Lord, about this wonderful grace of yours,
- 5:28the grace that we sang about, the grace that we read about God
- 5:33speak to us in Jesus precious name.
- 5:35And everyone said Amen. Well, Pastor Chuck Smith, he, he
- 5:41defined grace like this in his book, Why Grace Changes
- 5:45Everything is where I got my title, really.
- 5:49He said grace is God-given to me, something that I can't
- 5:53obtain on my own. Grace is being accepted by God
- 5:58even though I do not deserve it, even though I'm not worthy of
- 6:04it. I like that definition, but the
- 6:08New Testament we know defines grace as God's unmerited.
- 6:12What favour? Unmerited favour freely given,
- 6:18like salvation, grace and peace and mercy.
- 6:23It all has to do with salvation. What God gives to us unmerited,
- 6:29that works freely given by what? Believing alone by believing in
- 6:36Him, by believing that He is the Lord and Savior.
- 6:39The acronym for grace that I'm sure many of you know.
- 6:42If not, you'll be blown away by it.
- 6:45Grace, God's riches at Christ's expense.
- 6:52Grace Doesn't that just totally defined it?
- 6:57God's riches at Christ's expense.
- 7:00Grace is the work that was poured out of God's love for us
- 7:07through His Son's sacrifice on the cross, again, freely
- 7:12obtained by faith. I love grace, man.
- 7:17I embrace grace. I thank God for grace.
- 7:21But we can't overlook the fact that we just read here that this
- 7:25passage also speaks of adultery, speaks of sin.
- 7:31It speaks of adultery as the 7th commandment tells us clearly in
- 7:38the 10 commandments of Exodus chapter 20 verse 14, you shall
- 7:43not commit adultery. Very clearly God speaks and
- 7:49throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament, it speaks of
- 7:54adultery, Yes, physical adultery, but also spiritual
- 7:59adultery. How the Jews played the harlot.
- 8:03You've read that many times. You've been taught that how
- 8:06they've gone to other gods and started worshipping other gods
- 8:11thinking they can have both the true God and the false God.
- 8:17But here we're Speaking of the physical act.
- 8:21We're Speaking of adultery. And you know, today we've made
- 8:25it acceptable in our in our lives.
- 8:27We made it acceptable, you know, in this world, we've made it
- 8:32palatable. We could say we call it an
- 8:35affair. Movies have been even titled An
- 8:39Affair to Remember. We call it a rendezvous.
- 8:45We call it a flame. And if you're in the hood, it's
- 8:48the hookup. Why?
- 8:54Well, adultery sounds so sinful because it is, and we're always
- 9:00trying to get away with sin by calling it other things, by
- 9:06softening it, like I said, but it is just sin.
- 9:12Listen to what the proverb says about adultery in chapter 6,
- 9:15verse 32. Whoever commits adultery with a
- 9:20woman, and again, as you know, the scriptures can apply to both
- 9:23men and women, lacks what understanding.
- 9:30He who does so and this breaks me, destroys his own soul.
- 9:37That's the way God sees it. Not only does it destroy our
- 9:42soul, not only does it destroy us, it destroys our marriage, it
- 9:48destroys our children. Our relationship with our kids
- 9:53will never be the same because mom or dad had a fling, had an
- 9:58affair and it broke their hearts.
- 10:02We see families all the time dealing with this, coming into
- 10:08the office weeping, wishing they never engaged in it or others
- 10:13just stubborn and not wanting to repent of it.
- 10:18Yes, it destroys. And who's who's the destroyer
- 10:24who's celebrating over the fact that another marriage has been
- 10:27ruined, that another marriage has been broken?
- 10:30It's the enemy. He gives us lies and he and he
- 10:34baits us and he and he draws us away from our vows, draws us
- 10:39away from our promise to one another.
- 10:42And he likes doing that because it breaks up the family because
- 10:46they know that the families that will also affect the church.
- 10:50He's always about that coming to ruin and destroy.
- 10:56Well, the law also states that. And this will be an important
- 11:00reminder to us as we walk through the verses.
- 11:04It reminds us in Leviticus chapter 20, verse 10, the man
- 11:09who commits adultery with another man's wife, he who
- 11:13commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer
- 11:17and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
- 11:20It's a capital crime. When you think of divorce and
- 11:27you think of, you know, the only reason for divorce is, is
- 11:31adultery, sexual immorality. If we lived by the law and the
- 11:41law alone as they did back then, that was a no brainer because
- 11:45they were both be stoned and the marriage would end there.
- 11:49Aren't you glad we're under grace today?
- 11:55So without understanding, we pick up our study.
- 11:58But after a week long celebration known as the Feast
- 12:03of Tabernacles. Zakov if you could, mandatory
- 12:07feasts of a for the Jews who had who would go and live in
- 12:11temporary shelters or booths that were made from the branches
- 12:16of trees as part of the requirements that would remind
- 12:19them of those 40 years their ancestors wandered in the
- 12:24wilderness after having been delivered from Egypt and how God
- 12:31provided for them. It was mandatory.
- 12:33They had to go to Jerusalem. They had to involve themselves
- 12:37in this feast. But during this feast,
- 12:42controversy was stirring up around Jesus as well.
- 12:48Some claimed that Jesus is the promised Messiah.
- 12:51Some were believing, some were disagreeing, some were
- 12:54unbelieving, some were seeking him to see a sign.
- 12:58But we know that the religious leaders wanted him to arrest him
- 13:01and put him to death. But no one was able to lay a
- 13:08hand on him because his hour had not come.
- 13:14But the debate over who Jesus was would take pause at the end
- 13:17of the feast, as Chapter 7, verse 53.
- 13:20Look at that says and everyone went to his own house except in
- 13:27context to our verses two people and we can think of them as 2
- 13:35married couples who crept off to engage in the sin of adultery.
- 13:47And I want to focus though on the next day, the early early in
- 13:55the morning and what Jesus encountered when he came back to
- 13:59the temple and how he deals with religion and and the law and
- 14:05religious leaders who love to condemn people in order to
- 14:10control people. Jesus in this story, it shows us
- 14:17how grace changes everything and how blessed we are to be under
- 14:22his banner of salvation and love.
- 14:23Amen. So let's walk through these
- 14:26verses. But Jesus says went to the Mount
- 14:30of Olives as everyone one went home to his own house.
- 14:34Jesus went to the the Mount of Olives, not having a place to
- 14:37lay his head, not having his own home.
- 14:43He may have stayed with some friends there, as we know he had
- 14:47some friends, or he may have just went rested and prayed and
- 14:51fasted. But we know early in the morning
- 14:56he, he came into the temple and all the people came to him.
- 15:00He drew people to him and he sat down and taught them.
- 15:05That was the position of the teacher, the position of the
- 15:08rabbi, if you would, that he would sit and he would impart
- 15:13doctrine and he would give instruction.
- 15:17And we know that in Chapter 7, verse 46, we come to understand
- 15:22that Jesus taught like no other man ever taught.
- 15:26No other rabbi ever taught. He would blow away even those
- 15:30who would try to nab him and grab him.
- 15:34They were even blown away by how he spoke.
- 15:41Then the scribes, it said in verse 3, the experts in the law
- 15:46and the Pharisees would be the enforcers of the law, brought to
- 15:51him a woman caught in adultery. Through this beautiful gate,
- 15:57there at the temple came an ugly set up against a woman being
- 16:04used by the priest to trap Jesus.
- 16:09There they were, as Scripture tells us, verse 20 of chapter 8,
- 16:14by the treasury. There Jesus sat, there the
- 16:17people came, and here the scribes and the Pharisees bring
- 16:23through that beautiful gate, a very ugly scene, a woman here
- 16:30being dragged, no doubt dishevelled.
- 16:34Probably as they dragged her, she grabbed a sheet of some sort
- 16:37just covering herself. She comes in dishevelled,
- 16:42disobedient and defiant. And when they had set her that
- 16:50means to stand in the midst, in the midst of those who came to
- 16:56the early service, in the midst of those who came to hear Christ
- 17:00in the midst and the feet of Jesus, they said to him,
- 17:06Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery in the very act, Oh
- 17:11really, in the very act, they interrupted Jesus's teaching.
- 17:18I've been interrupted before with babies crying, right at our
- 17:24church. We're close by a train track,
- 17:28and then the train would come. Of course the train would come
- 17:31right when I'm making a point, and so I had to stop.
- 17:35Of course we've been interrupted by heavy rains or the
- 17:40electricity going off, all kinds of neat things.
- 17:44But I've never been interrupted like this.
- 17:46I got to admit, this really is an interruption.
- 17:52But was it? Was it as Jesus teaching?
- 17:59They put her in front of him and they wanted Jesus to be her
- 18:04judge and the crowd to be the jury?
- 18:07My brothers and sisters, a little.
- 18:09Did these religious folks realize that's the place that
- 18:14she needed to be at the feet of Jesus?
- 18:18Now, we don't know this gal. We don't know her background,
- 18:21her history. I'm not saying that she wasn't
- 18:25incense, she was. But what got her there?
- 18:30What gets man to, as I said, want to disobey their vows,
- 18:38disobey God? What gets a person who finds
- 18:41comfort in another bed with another person that that not her
- 18:49husband or his wife What how was she raised what she abused was
- 18:55you know, we're not making excuses, but sometimes there's
- 18:58reasons behind that's the place she needed to be right at the
- 19:05feet of Jesus. She doesn't realize that they
- 19:10don't realize that, but Jesus knows that He knows that was
- 19:18caught in adultery. They say in the very act, the
- 19:22word in the very act speaks of a of a thief in the very cot in
- 19:29the very act, right red handed as they were saying.
- 19:32Did they stumble across this act?
- 19:38No, I don't think so. You and I both know this was a
- 19:42setup unbeknownst to this woman with all the titles that these
- 19:48religious leaders love. We could add pervert to that as
- 19:51well. Because when you think about it,
- 19:54it's really an ugly thing when they're peeping through the
- 19:59windows and waiting for this adultery to take place in verse
- 20:06five, they want to support what they just did.
- 20:10They want to back it up with the law.
- 20:13They want to back it up with with scripture.
- 20:17It says now Moses in the law, and I'm sure that's the scribe
- 20:21speaking again. The scribe was the the lawyer of
- 20:26the religious groups. He was the one who would be the
- 20:30expert, if you would, in Scripture.
- 20:34They would go to the scribe to look things up.
- 20:36What does the law say on this? What is the soul and so forth.
- 20:40Now, Moses in the law commanded us that such should be stoned at
- 20:45capital punishment. But what do you say?
- 20:50So the crowd is kind of leaning in, you know, and, and Jesus is
- 20:54just sitting there looking at these knuckleheads.
- 20:58These guys are trying to trap me, huh?
- 21:01They're trying to use the law. They're they're trying to use
- 21:04Scripture to trap me. Because we know that Jesus was,
- 21:09well, he was a friend of sinners.
- 21:12He sat with them and he ate with them.
- 21:14They didn't like that, they hated that, but Jesus clearly
- 21:18stated, look at I came for what? Those who are in need of a
- 21:21physician, and although they were in need of the same
- 21:26physician, because of their pride, they thought we don't
- 21:30need Jesus. He's not the Messiah, he's not
- 21:32the coming. 1 He says, I go to those who are in need.
- 21:36That's why he was called friend of sinners.
- 21:38He never engaged in their sin, but he listened to them and he
- 21:41ministered to them. And if these religious rulers
- 21:46were truly interested in justice and and and knew the law
- 21:51completely, then why didn't they bring who?
- 21:57The man? Where's the the other one?
- 22:02Where's the man? They only brought the woman.
- 22:06Where is he again? Leviticus 2010 states the man
- 22:10has to be come along with them. Where was the man?
- 22:14If they were caught in the very act, they were just nothing but
- 22:18a setup. Who was this man?
- 22:21Was it one of them, you know, read scholars, you know,
- 22:23commentaries? We don't know.
- 22:27But was he part of the plot? Was he known to sneak away with
- 22:33this woman? Was that a a known fact?
- 22:35And hey, let's get this guy. We'll pay him off.
- 22:36We'll give him money or we'll we'll put pressure on him to
- 22:41have an affair, had to have this adulterous act together right
- 22:45after the Feast of Tabernacles. We, we, we don't know.
- 22:50But what what we do know he's not there.
- 22:55That's so wrong. This was an illegal court
- 22:58procedure. Well, we see there again in
- 23:02verse six that their motivation was to test Jesus.
- 23:09They said this, they said testing him that they might have
- 23:12something of which to accuse him.
- 23:16You see, because if he, if he says that, you know, or goes
- 23:21against the law and, and their estimation and and their
- 23:24definition, then we can get them for condemning the law.
- 23:30Oh, but but but if he lets her go, then we can get them because
- 23:35again, he's not fulfilling the law as written.
- 23:40They wanted to catch him by his response.
- 23:44It was he who said I did not come to condemn the law, but to
- 23:47accomplish it. But how Jesus response to this
- 23:55is very interesting. Continuing on, it says, but
- 23:58Jesus stooped down again, He's in his sitting position and he
- 24:02Stoops down. He he writes on the ground with
- 24:05his finger as though he did not hear and that's so interesting
- 24:11about the Lord our God. When the enemy comes and accuses
- 24:16us before him, God does not hear it because the blood of Christ
- 24:21is upon us. He can come and accuse us of all
- 24:25kinds of things, but we can rest assure in Christ in the cross,
- 24:31but he doesn't hear those words of condemnation against us.
- 24:36Many that's a side that's a side Bible study for later on, but he
- 24:41stinks down. He starts to write again.
- 24:44He writes on on the ground with his finger and remember it was
- 24:50the finger of God that wrote the law that wrote the law on the
- 24:54tablets, at least the first ones right?
- 24:57And he's the one who wrote thou shall not commit a doctor.
- 24:59He knows the word of God for he is the word of God.
- 25:05And now we see the finger of God once more riding in the dust.
- 25:12The question is, what did he write?
- 25:18Right. What did he write?
- 25:22The Bible doesn't tell us anything.
- 25:26Inquiring minds want to know, Was it the 10 commandments?
- 25:32Some people say that. Well, that was.
- 25:33That's a lot of writing he's standing over.
- 25:38And he's right. Whatever he's writing.
- 25:41Was it Leviticus 2010? You guys are off.
- 25:45There's something missing here. Was it their sins and failures?
- 25:50Was it if anyone looks at a woman lustfully has already
- 25:55committed altar with her and his heart?
- 25:59We don't know. So then they continue asking
- 26:06them. They continue saying, what do
- 26:10you say? She's caught in adultery.
- 26:12Look at her. Look at the way she looks this
- 26:15shuffled Sinner. What do you say, Jesus, what do
- 26:21you say? And he raised himself up and
- 26:24said to them, you want an answer, I'm going to give you an
- 26:26answer. He was without sin among you.
- 26:31Let him throw a stone at her first.
- 26:35Boom. That's heavy, man.
- 26:38Think about that. I love the Lord.
- 26:42You're not worried. You just look at these guys and
- 26:46you guys are something else. Who?
- 26:50He who is without sin among you. Let him throw the first stone.
- 26:56Well, what an answer, man. See Jesus expose their desire to
- 27:02punish the sins of others while ignoring what their own sin.
- 27:10Deuteronomy does tell us in the 17th chapter that it takes two
- 27:14or three witnesses to bring someone before the council, and
- 27:19in the hands of the witnesses shall be the first against him
- 27:22to be put to death. But here silence begins and
- 27:34their intent to trap Jesus and to use it against them has just
- 27:39failed. And Jesus knows the intent of
- 27:44their heart. You know, friends, we are good
- 27:49at pointing fingers, aren't we? If we'd be honest, we were good
- 27:52at point. We were good in judging others
- 27:57against judge, judgement against others sin and ignoring our own
- 28:03sin, forgetting as I said, that wonderful word of grace,
- 28:07forgetting, you know, now that doesn't exclude us, especially
- 28:12as elders and pastors. You know, sometimes we have to
- 28:17apply church discipline. And I want to tell you
- 28:20something, we don't like doing that, but sometimes it's needed.
- 28:25Or sometimes as a brother and sister, you, you see a brother
- 28:28or another sister doing something that you know is not
- 28:32good for them. It's not glorifying Christ.
- 28:34It's only going to bring harm to them.
- 28:36And you know, and you love them and you care for them and, and
- 28:40you want to bring this up to them.
- 28:42And they say to us, what? Don't judge me, right?
- 28:48We know that word well, but we're good at stoning others,
- 28:52and that shouldn't be. Galatians 61 says this, and you
- 28:55know it well. Brethren, if a man is overtaken
- 28:58in any trespass, you who are spiritual, you who are led by
- 29:05the Spirit, you who are a believer led by the Spirit, to
- 29:10restore that one, the word restore there it means to set a
- 29:16broken bone. Now think of it that way.
- 29:20How would you like if you broke your bone, if you broke your
- 29:24arm, your your leg, how would you want it?
- 29:27Well, how would you want it restored?
- 29:30But first of all, you'd say give me medicine, give me drugs, put
- 29:35me out and do it right? Or would you want to just say
- 29:41hold your breath and bite on this, this piece of wood reset
- 29:49no man that that hurts, but but you who are spiritual restore
- 29:54such a one in the spirit of gentleness, not in the spirit of
- 29:59pride, not in the spirit of superiority, but in the spirit,
- 30:03since you're being led by the spirit, since you are the
- 30:05spiritual one to be done in the spirit of gentleness and then
- 30:12considering yourself, Paul says unless you also be tempted.
- 30:18Someone says spirituality is not measured by how well we expose
- 30:22an offender, but how effectively we restore an offender.
- 30:30I like that. Who was the only one eligible
- 30:33here to throw a stone? Anybody.
- 30:36Jesus, right. Everybody say Jesus, I like that
- 30:41name. He was the only one truly that
- 30:44was really able to to throw the stone with his quote with his
- 30:49comment to these Pharisees. And again he says he stooped
- 30:56down and wrote on the ground. And those of the Pharisees in
- 31:03the in the scribes who heard it, who heard what he was without
- 31:07sin among you, LED him throw a stone at her first being
- 31:11convicted by their conscience. And we all are born with a
- 31:14conscience. If I could say we come to an age
- 31:17where we understand right from wrong.
- 31:19We have a conscience and it's there for a purpose.
- 31:24But in this case they went out one by one and notice beginning
- 31:28with the oldest even to the last.
- 31:31And that's interesting, the oldest to the last, you know, I
- 31:37have more behind me at my age of 40 than than ahead of me.
- 31:45But it's true, more experience. We boasted that sometimes Gray
- 31:52hair. This used to be black until I
- 31:55raised five children. I used to have hair down to my
- 31:58back now anyway, but I used to have hair until I started
- 32:01ministry. But I love it.
- 32:03Don't get me wrong, I love them both, but here in the response,
- 32:09they know none of them were without sin, none of them were
- 32:14qualified to cast a stone based upon Christ's word except for
- 32:22Him. And then at that point, we've
- 32:27heard stones being dropped and them just leaving, for Scripture
- 32:39tells us that Jesus was left alone and the woman standing in
- 32:43the midst. So here is Jesus, and here's the
- 32:47woman standing before the King of kings and the Lord of Lords,
- 32:51standing before the one that could stone her in the midst of
- 32:57the early service of the Bible study.
- 33:02Wow. What do you see to do?
- 33:08What will he do? Having the only right to take
- 33:11her out? Well, I'm reminded of what Chuck
- 33:16Smith illustrated to us. And your pastor.
- 33:20I've also heard him use this. There's a difference between the
- 33:24police and the paramedics. You guys remember that one?
- 33:29The the police and they and the police, they care if they run
- 33:33out onto an accident, if they come onto an accident or call to
- 33:37an accident. Don't get me wrong, the police,
- 33:40they do care for for the driver or for anyone who's hurt.
- 33:47But you and I know both know that they arrive, they secure
- 33:50the area, they begin to question the witnesses and they they
- 33:54measure the skid marks. Their main person is to find out
- 33:58who's at fault. But when the paramedics get
- 34:02there, they don't care who's at fault.
- 34:07This automobile accident could have taken place right after a
- 34:10robbery, even maybe right after another crime.
- 34:14But they're not interested in that.
- 34:17They're interested in anyone being hurt.
- 34:20They're they're interested in the injured.
- 34:23They're interested in those who are wounded.
- 34:24They want to treat them. They want to apply first aid.
- 34:29That's what they care about and that speaks of Christ who is
- 34:36really the paramedic here, not like the Pharisees, the
- 34:41legalists, those who come only to condemn and and to convict.
- 34:51But when Jesus look at verse 10, when Jesus had raised himself
- 34:55up. Now he's standing and saw no one
- 34:59everyone left but the woman that blows me away.
- 35:04You know, at this point she probably could have taken off
- 35:06she probably but she was even probably blown away and he said
- 35:12to her woman, where are those who accuse Where are those
- 35:17accusers of yours noted. He didn't say harlot or other
- 35:23words that we we know Scarlet. No, he called her woman and he
- 35:32called her woman in an endearing way.
- 35:35It's the same title that he had given to his mother there at the
- 35:41wedding at Cana, there at the cross when he saw his cared for
- 35:47his mom. But they're at the wedding at
- 35:50Cana when she asked when he said that they ran out of wine back
- 35:56then. You don't run out of wine at
- 35:57weddings, right? It's like running out of mole at
- 36:01A at a Chicano wedding. You don't run out of mole.
- 36:05But he says won't, woman, What is that to me?
- 36:10My hour has not yet come and we know the story.
- 36:13It's the same word. It was done in an endearing way
- 36:18and she's just getting blown away, man.
- 36:20See Jesus, he sees a sinner's potential, Amen.
- 36:27He sees our potential even before we come to Him.
- 36:31He sees the fact that when we come or if we will bow our knee
- 36:35and we will receive Him as Lord and Savior Man, has He got a
- 36:37plan for us? He wants to use us.
- 36:43He wants to love us and embrace us.
- 36:46He wants us to embrace Him. And He says this.
- 36:49Has no one condemned you? He left this has no one
- 36:57condemned. Where are your condemners?
- 37:00And now the woman speaks no Lord.
- 37:04She said, has no one condemned you?
- 37:08And she said no Lord. I mean, her response was spoken
- 37:16from a broken heart. Her response was spoken from a
- 37:22being humbled in the presence of Jesus.
- 37:26Her response, Lord, which is a title in the Greek reserve only
- 37:30for God, was that liking, liking that of the thief on the cross.
- 37:36Remember that guy, you, you, we'll meet him again.
- 37:40By the way, when he said Lord, what?
- 37:45Remember Me, Lord, Remember Me. And this is the same response.
- 37:52She says no Lord, no one has condemned me.
- 38:00She was guilty, don't get me wrong, we're not overlooking
- 38:04that yet. Her condemners have left the
- 38:06temple. But the true judge was standing
- 38:09in front of her and she in like manner knew only the Lord could
- 38:16free her like he did. Only this one who she stood
- 38:19before could stone her. But he said this, Neither do
- 38:26what? Neither do I, neither do I.
- 38:31And John 317 you know this, God did not send his Son into the
- 38:36world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might
- 38:44be saved. He didn't come to condemn the
- 38:46world because the world was condemned already.
- 38:51He came that we might be saved through Him.
- 38:58Neither do I speaks of God's mercy.
- 39:02Write that down. Your Bible mercy and mercy is
- 39:05not getting what we deserve. You guys know that.
- 39:09But before we think this restored woman has gotten away
- 39:14with her sin, we need to read the rest of this verse or the
- 39:20rest of Jesus exhortation to her.
- 39:24Neither do I go and sin no more. Neither do I go.
- 39:32Go speaks of our of our topic, grace.
- 39:36Go speaks of grace being set free and forgiven for her.
- 39:40Sin speaks loudly of God's grace.
- 39:43Grace is getting what you don't deserve.
- 39:49Sin no more speaks of truth. So we have here grace and truth,
- 39:54and they will always go together, grace and truth.
- 39:59Sin no more speaks of truth that undergirds grace, grace and
- 40:07truth. Chuck Smith called them the
- 40:10Siamese twins of the Bible. Now, we're not talking here
- 40:15about cheap grace. Again, don't get it twisted.
- 40:20There will be consequences for this woman's adultery.
- 40:25There will be. She'll have to go back home.
- 40:27Hey, there's a crowd there that knows now that she committed
- 40:30adultery. There's a crowd there also that
- 40:33knows that this man by the name of Jesus has forgiven her and
- 40:38given her peace through grace and built her faith by calling
- 40:45him Lord. So let's not get it.
- 40:47It's not cheap grace. Bonhoeffer said, great, cheap
- 40:51grace is the enemy of the church.
- 40:57Paul said, do we go on sitting? The grace may abound more and
- 41:02more and more. No, that's cheap grace, man.
- 41:04Don't don't think that way. Well, brother, you know it's
- 41:08grace and you know, yeah, I know I'm but you know grace.
- 41:12That's that's called cheap grace and it's the enemy of the
- 41:15church. Think about that.
- 41:18No one grows, no one is maturing the grace.
- 41:26This grace is God's grace and was bought with a price.
- 41:30As we said, no price came from the cross.
- 41:34Jesus acknowledged that this woman had sin, a terrible sin of
- 41:37adultery, and that is truth. But by his grace, Jesus sets her
- 41:45free and forgives her and exhorts her to sin no more.
- 41:48Do not continue in the lifestyle of that sin.
- 41:52And that is why grace changes everything.
- 41:56And if I may real quickly, this is Extra verse Sunday I heard.
- 42:00Look at verse 12 and we'll end with this.
- 42:03Then Jesus spoke to them again. He continued the teaching
- 42:06because what an application they had to this teaching to this
- 42:10Bible study. And he says as she's leaving now
- 42:14through that beautiful gate from the temple, restored, loved,
- 42:21cared for, I am the light of the world.
- 42:24And what does light do? Light exposes, it reveals, it
- 42:28illuminates, it chases also what darkness away.
- 42:33I am the light of the world. He who follows me should not
- 42:36walk in darkness, but have the light of life.
- 42:40Have you embraced grace this morning?
- 42:42Have you accepted Christ as your Savior?
- 42:45If not, what are you waiting for?
- 42:47How much more love can one show to you?
- 42:50The God who is true show to you through His Son from the cross.
- 42:55What more love do you want? Someone has paid a price to set
- 43:01you free and this morning you can be set free as the eldest
