Transcript
- 0:00OK, now the part that I'm really most excited for.
- 0:06Girl, welcome back to the pod, the one and only Cameron Tyler.
- 0:13Hello Feels. So good to be back.
- 0:15Oh my God. And now in the new space, the
- 0:18last time we were together on the mic was in the previous dude
- 0:22IDK space. In the old studio.
- 0:24Yeah, Oh my God. I feel like right now, for the
- 0:28past like 2 minutes, my brain has been like all over the
- 0:31place. And now that I look in the eyes
- 0:33of my friend, I'm like, I'm here.
- 0:35I'm home. Relief, relief.
- 0:37Cameron, what's up with you? What are you doing?
- 0:40I'm doing everything. Oh, as always.
- 0:45As always. No, really, I, I just finished
- 0:48the first season of my podcast, which you came over and guested
- 0:52on. My God, that day was so fun.
- 0:54And we talked about meet me in Saint Louis.
- 0:56Yes, such such a good Judy movie.
- 1:00It's such a good Judy movie. It's the first Judy movie you've
- 1:03podcasted about. Yeah, and it wasn't even on your
- 1:06own. Podcast, I know, and I'm so
- 1:07embarrassed for that. No, and eventually we are gonna
- 1:10do Judy Garland movie The Clock. Yes.
- 1:13But, And we planned on doing it today.
- 1:15Yes, we did. But then Pride happened and I
- 1:19was like, wait, one of my favorite movies ever.
- 1:23Yeah. Which really is the movie I
- 1:25should have suggested for us to watch the first time I came
- 1:28here. Although we just said we have no
- 1:29regrets. No regrets.
- 1:30We. Won't regret it.
- 1:31Was going to be playing at the Alamo.
- 1:33God bless the Alamo. Never forget the Alamo.
- 1:37Yeah, well, I do have some notes for them, but.
- 1:39Oh, I'm not OK. No one's without fault.
- 1:43OK, here's the thing. If they ever if, if Alamo
- 1:47Drafthouse, if you ever want to do any kind of brand partnership
- 1:50with me, I'll take this all back.
- 1:52But I have to say, when we went to Alamo Drafthouse to see that
- 1:55movie, I was 10 minutes late, OK?
- 1:59Not even. Not even the movie hadn't even
- 2:02started yet. Yeah, it was a previews when you
- 2:05came in. And like you, here's the thing,
- 2:08Alamo draft, I was like, you knew who I was.
- 2:10You knew that I wasn't going to be on time for the movie.
- 2:14But I walk in and the person working there says, oh, which
- 2:19which movie are you here to see? I said Broken Hearts Club.
- 2:21And she said, oh, I have to go talk to my manager to see if we
- 2:24can let you in because you're late.
- 2:28You weren't late, by the way. And thank you for that.
- 2:30No, and they did know who you are.
- 2:32Who doesn't? And who doesn't, truly?
- 2:35I mean, was this? I'm not going to say it.
- 2:40And I mean, thank God she let me in.
- 2:43She said OK yeah you can go in. But at that point I I waited 5
- 2:46minutes for her to go talk to her manager.
- 2:48Well, yeah, I had to ask. Was this a ploy to make you
- 2:51later? Yeah, I think that it was.
- 2:52I think that they were punishing me and also Alamo Drafthouse
- 2:57took my favorite thing off of the menu.
- 2:59I used to go to Alamo Drafthouse for the sweet potato bowl.
- 3:02It's like a, it was like a grain bowl thing.
- 3:05And you'd think, Oh my God, I wouldn't go to Alamo Drafthouse
- 3:07for this like grain bowl. But it was so good.
- 3:12And when I got to Alamo Drafthouse and I was already
- 3:15upset. That I was.
- 3:18And then I opened the menu I was so excited to have there.
- 3:23Was no pot of gold at the end of your rainbow that day?
- 3:26I honestly am like should I even be saying this?
- 3:28This is. Well, there goes your
- 3:30partnership. I'm not saying anything bad
- 3:34about the Alamo. I'm going to wistfully reminisce
- 3:37on their green Chili gravy, which they also discontinued.
- 3:41Oh no. But I'm open to partnerships.
- 3:48He said never forget the Alamo, never forgot.
- 3:51But that experience was so fun. Going to watch this in the
- 3:55theater and tragically not enough people in that theater.
- 3:59I think a grand total of 8. Yeah, pretty homophobic, Denver.
- 4:04Was the phrase remember the Alamo not never forget?
- 4:08That's 9/11. Why does 9/11 always come up
- 4:11when I'm with you? Well because this movie you did
- 4:14say it's pre 911 before we even went to see.
- 4:17It that's true, I do classify well 'cause I classify gay
- 4:21movies that way. Yeah, because it is different.
- 4:24911 changed the scope of gay cinema in this thesis I will.
- 4:28And no one is talking about that enough.
- 4:31Till now. Till today.
- 4:33Yeah, one of my chop liver. I'm just kidding.
- 4:36No, I was so excited that this movie was going to be in
- 4:39theaters 'cause I can't believe I didn't suggest it to you.
- 4:41This movie came out in the year 2000.
- 4:44Like they made this movie in 1999.
- 4:47It's really a 20th century gay movie.
- 4:49It really is. And I have to say it is one of
- 4:52the best ones. I agree.
- 4:55It aged well. Spoiler alert.
- 4:56OK, yeah, sorry guys, podcast over.
- 4:59It aged well. It held up.
- 5:02I we laughed, we cried. Oh God, this.
- 5:06OK, so I first have to say that I need to know if you have ever
- 5:12been a part of a recreational softball league.
- 5:15I've never been part of a recreational softball league
- 5:20because softball is a sport, so that disqualifies the activity
- 5:26from my roster. Yeah.
- 5:28Because of my lifestyle. For sure.
- 5:30Which is stationary, but I always wanted to be one of those
- 5:37gays who's on a gay well, mostly kickball.
- 5:39Yeah, my, I have a good friend, Dana Sparks shout out front of
- 5:43the pod. She's she's in gay kickball and,
- 5:47and there's always some good stories about gay kickball.
- 5:51Well, never say never, never say.
- 5:53I'm open to it. This movie certainly inspires me
- 5:56to think about it. Maybe you'll get recruited,
- 5:59you'll be a top recruit. Well, I'm probably going to now.
- 6:02A personality hire, frankly. What else is new?
- 6:11OK, I there was another thing that I was going to ask you.
- 6:15Oh yeah. What's your OGT?
- 6:17Obviously gay. Oh my God, that was in my
- 6:19notepad. Oh.
- 6:20My God. Oh my God, perfect.
- 6:22You're not. You are a gay man in my eyes.
- 6:24We've already been over this. So that is why I was going to
- 6:27ask that. To be clear, OGT is.
- 6:30Obviously gay trait. Obviously gay trait.
- 6:32Yeah. And in the movie I did, you
- 6:35write the examples that they gave in the movie for theirs?
- 6:37They gave the example, remember. I know that one of them was the
- 6:41carpenters. Yes.
- 6:43And then there was culinary interests and intense fear of
- 6:47blood sports, which I just said. So that's one of them.
- 6:50I don't play any sports. Famously, famously.
- 6:54I actually don't know about the carpenters, except for Karen
- 6:58Carpenters. There's no place like home for
- 7:00the holidays because who doesn't?
- 7:03Who doesn't? So not instead of the
- 7:06carpenters, I would say Judy Garland.
- 7:09Of course, I'm a Judy Garland Stan.
- 7:11She is the role model for me, which is gonna be unfortunate
- 7:18when I hit 49. But.
- 7:21And as far as culinary interest, absolutely not because I can't
- 7:24cook for sure. So instead of culinary interest,
- 7:27I would say existential, not dread, but pessimism.
- 7:36I think the gays have claimed that these days, don't you
- 7:38think? I do, yeah.
- 7:40I think it kind of fits under like the sort of like bitchy
- 7:45umbrella, you know, It's kind of like all-encompassing.
- 7:50And under the bitchy umbrella is the only place that I feel safe.
- 7:53So I guess that's my 4th 1. What are your Ogts?
- 7:58Oh my gosh, I wish that I had I I should have known that you
- 8:01were going to ask me this too. I.
- 8:02Wish I would have thought about it.
- 8:03No, I. Know I should have known OK long
- 8:07time viewer of Will and Grace since I was a child.
- 8:11That's a good one. That's.
- 8:12Kind of an OGT. I'm embarrassed I didn't say
- 8:14that. That's a good one.
- 8:15And thank you for that. Yeah, I would say a lot of house
- 8:20plants you. Know yeah, cuz the thing about
- 8:24gays is you either are or you aren't.
- 8:27Yeah, there's no middle ground. You have a ton or you have none.
- 8:29I have none. Yeah.
- 8:31Famously, famously kill him. But you have but you have a a
- 8:34really pretty view from your apartment.
- 8:37That's true. I figured why do I need a house
- 8:38plant when I can see every tree in the city?
- 8:41Wow. That's poetic.
- 8:43And that is poetic, stuck up. He's a writer.
- 8:47And just like. That and just like that, yeah, I
- 8:51would say probably, I mean probably my Judy love as well.
- 8:56You love Judy. Yeah, you love cinema.
- 8:59Cinema I am kind of Yeah, I'm kind of a cinema gay when.
- 9:03You're basically a Vincent Minelli walking amongst.
- 9:05Us and thank you so much for saying that because I've been
- 9:08waiting for someone to I. Want you to direct me in life.
- 9:13In life, in love. Someone needs to.
- 9:16Girl. Well, that this might be the
- 9:19blind leading the blind, but honestly, who wouldn't watch
- 9:22that movie? Who wouldn't watch that movie?
- 9:26Yeah, that's so true. No, we'd make such a good ROM
- 9:28com. Oh my God, I know we'd be the
- 9:30Broken Hearts club. OK, let's get into that.
- 9:32Which one are you? Well, let's go over who they all
- 9:36are, OK? Yeah, 'cause then 'cause then I
- 9:38will tell you about. OK, so we've got we've got Jack
- 9:44Mahoney playing Jack the Jack. Yes, and he's like.
- 9:48John Mahoney. Did I say Jack Mahoney?
- 9:50No, I said John. It's John.
- 9:51Mahoney playing Jack, which I think is what you said.
- 9:54Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:55And I guess he was on Seinfeld. I've never seen Seinfeld in my
- 9:57life. Oh, no.
- 9:58Frazier. Frazier, I was going to say, I
- 10:01think he plays a cop on Frazier. Yeah, I guess.
- 10:05So but he's he's kind of a gay elder.
- 10:09Well, he's. Yeah.
- 10:09He's like the patriarch of this group of young gay men.
- 10:13Yeah. Who are all friends.
- 10:14Yes, but like, in a sibling way. Yes, exactly.
- 10:17With lots of sibling rivalry. Yes, frenemies.
- 10:21You might say frenemies. And then Timothy Olyphant.
- 10:25Is that how you pronounce his last name?
- 10:26He plays Dennis kind of the he's a photographer.
- 10:31He's he's an artsy guy and he owns a house in West Hollywood,
- 10:39so. Dreamy.
- 10:40Good for him. And they're like, what, in their
- 10:42late 20s? Yeah, they're supposed to be 28
- 10:45in this, which made me feel that was.
- 10:47Tough to to learn when he's like, yeah, and I'm 28.
- 10:51I was like, what? Yeah.
- 10:53Yeah, OK. And then there's Cole the
- 10:57hottie, the one who is everyone wants to be.
- 11:01He's an actor. An athlete.
- 11:04An athlete buff, sexy. Unfortunately he's played by
- 11:08Dean Kane who used to be Superman, who is now
- 11:12unfortunately Super Maga so but that's OK.
- 11:17Look up a recent picture of him Karma's.
- 11:20It kind of it's kind of all worked out for him.
- 11:22All worked out or for us? For us, yeah.
- 11:26Zach Braff plays Benji. Which I had to look up today.
- 11:29I couldn't remember what his character's name was.
- 11:31But you know what? We need more Benji's.
- 11:33I agree. I love the name Benji.
- 11:35Me too. And I love him as Benji me.
- 11:38Too. Zach Braff plays a little.
- 11:41I mean, he's not the Gaby of the movie 'cause that's the whole
- 11:44point of one of the other characters, but.
- 11:47He seems to be kind of like the little brother.
- 11:49I was just gonna say he kind of has this childlike energy.
- 11:53He's sort of just like a little sweetheart.
- 11:55He's kind of Spacey, but he's he's like the tagalong.
- 11:58Yeah. He's not stupid, but he's not
- 12:01the smart one. No.
- 12:02And he's got the 1999 bleached hair, which I love.
- 12:06I love it. I love, I love it.
- 12:08To this day. I'm looking at, I'm looking in
- 12:11the in the background looking at him right now.
- 12:13And it's. Right behind me, isn't it?
- 12:14Oh my God, it is. Along with the Furbies, sorry to
- 12:17remind you. And then there's Patrick.
- 12:21He's played by Ben Weber. Or is it Weber?
- 12:23Don't know for. Sure.
- 12:24I think it's Ben Weber. And the thing about Ben Weber
- 12:27that I didn't realize until this time that I watched the movie
- 12:30because I haven't watched it in a few years, is that he is from
- 12:34Sex in the City. Yeah.
- 12:37He my God, what was his name on Sex and the City?
- 12:41Oh my God, I literally was just telling my friend about it the
- 12:43other day. He's the one that Miranda just
- 12:45treated like shit in the first couple seasons.
- 12:48Yeah, and now here I am doing the same thing anyway.
- 12:52That Miranda totally would forget his name.
- 12:55I know I didn't think that I had ever seen him in anything and
- 12:58only when I looked up his IMDb was I like oh duh.
- 13:01Yeah, he is kind of like AI mean.
- 13:05He's not that notable, I'm afraid to say.
- 13:08He unfortunately is so relatable to me, which we'll get into, but
- 13:16he is kind of like the bitter, jaded, critical, pessimistic.
- 13:23Thinks thinks he's ugly as dirt. So self degrading.
- 13:28Actually I wrote one of his quotes.
- 13:29What? Did he say?
- 13:31Wait, did I? Oh my God, you know what's so
- 13:33sad? What?
- 13:34It was such a downer. I took it off my list.
- 13:36Wow. But it was something about like,
- 13:39all of these gays out here in LA are just 10s looking for an. 11
- 13:43for an 11. And I'm like, wow, mood.
- 13:46And he's like, if, if I meet the right one and they're drunk
- 13:49enough, I'm maybe a six. Yeah.
- 13:51I'm like everyone has felt like that.
- 13:53Everyone has felt like I'm the ugliest fuck in this group.
- 13:57Yeah, that's how I feel every time I'm on a show with you.
- 14:00Oh my God, you're making me look bad.
- 14:03God, now I'm a four. Oh my God.
- 14:06It's all perspective, babe. It's all perspective.
- 14:08Yeah, so, but it was a little. I was also really annoyed with
- 14:12him. A lot of the time when he's
- 14:13like, I'm just ugly. I'm like, shut up, you're not.
- 14:16You know, yeah, he's certainly not the Adonis of the group.
- 14:19And he's also annoying. And his story is weird because
- 14:22his his main story is that his lesbian sister and her wife want
- 14:28his sperm so they can have a baby.
- 14:31And I'm like, well, if you were that ugly, would your sister
- 14:34want your sperm? Right.
- 14:35Yeah. And that's the whole thing is
- 14:37that he's like, I won't do it because I'm ugly.
- 14:40Yeah. Yeah, he is annoying, yeah,
- 14:42which is probably also why I find him relatable.
- 14:45You know what is also really rude and self-centered about him
- 14:48is that he keeps going on and on about how ugly he is to his
- 14:51sister who, like they share genes, you know what I mean?
- 14:56Yeah, like that's not very nice. I know when I do that, my
- 15:00sister's like, please stop. Yeah, stop that.
- 15:02Too many people tell us we look alike.
- 15:04Please stop. I'm like, OK, OK, it's fair, OK.
- 15:08And then the breakout role for Billy Porter as Taylor, he was
- 15:12kind of the the least known. Was it her?
- 15:15Breakout role for I guess at that time it probably would.
- 15:18Have been This is the first feature film that he was ever
- 15:20in. Can you believe that?
- 15:22Oh my, actually I can't. Billy Porter.
- 15:24Like when I think of him, I just think of him as such an icon.
- 15:27I know. Because of pose where he played,
- 15:30Pray tell. Yeah.
- 15:32But then I remember like, yeah, pose didn't come out till 2018
- 15:36and this is from 2000, Yeah, like an adult.
- 15:40This is was created in that time somewhere.
- 15:43Truly. Yeah, no.
- 15:44And he's, he's so funny in it. And he also has barely aged.
- 15:49Yeah. I mean, I'm not gonna say it but
- 15:52but he looks the. Exact same.
- 15:54Yeah, he really does. And then of course, we have
- 15:58Kevin, played by Andrew Keegan, the Gaby.
- 16:01The 90s heartthrob Andrew Keegan, who I guess now is like,
- 16:04in a cult? What?
- 16:06I guess he's in a cult now. No, I did just a quick search
- 16:10and he's in a cult allegedly. Allegedly.
- 16:13I'll look it up more later, but for now everyone just imagined
- 16:16him being in a cult because I think he is.
- 16:17And if you're watching this, reach out like we're here to
- 16:19help. Oh, if he if Andrew Keegan's
- 16:21watching this. Join my cult.
- 16:24I'll help you build a new one together.
- 16:26Oh my God. And then you can lead it.
- 16:28It's so much more fun being a leader than a follower. 100%.
- 16:32How do you feel about straight people playing gay characters?
- 16:37I don't hate it at all. I know some people feel very
- 16:41strongly about it and it's like an actor equity thing where it's
- 16:44like we should at least be if it were, if we're entitled to
- 16:48anything, it should at least be gay parts.
- 16:50If I'm a gay actor, I don't personally feel that way.
- 16:55Look, I'm not an actor, so I will say it.
- 16:57Maybe it's not my place to have this opinion.
- 17:02I just don't care 'cause I think about like, I think about it
- 17:07early on when like Brokeback Mountain Also watched that at
- 17:12the Alamo last month. Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath
- 17:15Ledger, both straight men playing gay parts.
- 17:19But they did it with complete respect.
- 17:24And at that time, and I get why people think like, yeah, that
- 17:28was fine then, but now people are able to just be out and gay
- 17:32and be in movies. And at the time, you couldn't.
- 17:34And so it was like a big thing for them to do.
- 17:38Now, it's not like you're a hero if you do it, but at the same
- 17:40time I think you should be able to.
- 17:42Yeah, I think that I really like to see straight people playing
- 17:48gay roles because it shows that it's not embarrassing or career
- 17:54ending to play a gay character, that there doesn't have to be
- 17:58this shame or this like black mark on your IMDb if you've
- 18:03played a gay character. I think that obviously it's, we
- 18:09want more work for gay actors, but I also don't think that gay
- 18:14actors should only be given gay roles either.
- 18:19It's like, I think that that like if you're an actor, you are
- 18:24acting. You're not being you, you are
- 18:27playing a part. So obviously you should be able
- 18:32to embody a life that you don't have and that should be OK.
- 18:37That's like the point of acting. That's the point of it.
- 18:40And I think, like, I think that for a while it seemed that maybe
- 18:45it was the answer to getting more gay actors employed is to
- 18:48give them every gay role. But at the same time, it's like,
- 18:51I think the answer more likely should be just hire gay actors
- 18:56for any role. Yeah.
- 18:57So that they're gainfully employed.
- 18:59Exactly. And don't make rules like that
- 19:03which are to me just too pigeonholy.
- 19:06Like I don't, I just don't like when people say that.
- 19:08And I get the reasoning for it. And it's simply one of those
- 19:12things where I'm like, let's agree to disagree.
- 19:15My favorite saying, I actually hate it so much.
- 19:18But it is one of those things where I'm like, we're not going
- 19:20to agree. It's an argument under really to
- 19:22say, let's agree to disagree. I know, and sometimes you
- 19:25shouldn't do it because sometimes racist try to do that
- 19:28so that I'm like, I'm not being a racist, but let's agree to
- 19:32disagree on the gay actor. Thing on the gay actor thing.
- 19:35Like you disagree with me, I think you are not a lesbian.
- 19:39What? I love to see you play a
- 19:40lesbian. Of course.
- 19:43I don't wanna see anyone else play a lesbian.
- 19:45Thank you so much. I like you better than every
- 19:47lesbian actor I've ever seen. I can't even name a lesbian
- 19:51actor right now. Thank you so much.
- 19:53I'm gonna get cancelled with the lesbians.
- 19:54Wow, he really? Is I was literally just bragging
- 19:57to my friend the other day about how many lesbian friends I have
- 19:59now. Wow.
- 20:00Cause for a long time I didn't have any.
- 20:02You lost them all I. Just lost all of them.
- 20:04I can't believe I feel gutted. Wow, all right.
- 20:06And you are gutted. And I am.
- 20:10Yeah, I feel like the fact that so many straight characters or
- 20:14sorry, the fact that there are so many straight actors playing
- 20:18gay men in this movie is incredible.
- 20:21Like, oh, their agents told them don't do this.
- 20:25A lot of their a lot of their people who are making money off
- 20:29of them were like, don't do this movie.
- 20:31Do not play a gay character. This is the end of your career.
- 20:35And guess what? They all ended up fine.
- 20:38They really did, with the exception of Dean Kane, who's
- 20:41obviously unwell. But it's not because he played
- 20:44this. Role, But it's not because he
- 20:45played this role. And like, when we look at the
- 20:47list of people like Timothy Olyphant, Dean Kane, Zach Braff,
- 20:51Andrew Keegan, Ben Webber, Justin Theroux, who plays
- 20:56Marshall. That's right, all of them are
- 20:59straight. The only gay one I think was
- 21:01Billy Porter. Actually, Matt McGrath is also
- 21:04gay. Oh yeah?
- 21:05Well, we forgot to even mention Matt McGrath who plays Howie
- 21:08because he's like in nothing else ever again.
- 21:12Like on IMDb this is his number one movie I think.
- 21:14He's more of a stage actor than he must be.
- 21:17He must be. I like him in the movie.
- 21:19Me too. I also really relate to his
- 21:21character. Real.
- 21:22Oh yeah, his. Character's really uptight.
- 21:25He's so much like Dan Bukatinski's character in All
- 21:28Over the Guy. Just neurotic, unfortunately,
- 21:31unfortunately, but also so lovable.
- 21:34I really like him. And you know why I know that
- 21:36he's gay is because I went to his Wikipedia page and under
- 21:39Personal Life, literally just. Says my favorite section.
- 21:42My favorite section because that's where you find out if
- 21:44someone's gay always. That's like the only thing
- 21:46that's ever in personal life is this person is gay or not.
- 21:49And literally the only line under personal life is Matt
- 21:53McGrath is gay. Oh, I that's my goal in life.
- 21:58It's. Like I have a Wikipedia page in
- 22:00under personal life, it just says Cameron Tyler.
- 22:02Is gay and I feel like they won't even do that for me
- 22:04because it's just like that's my whole thing.
- 22:07So they're like, there's no need.
- 22:09Yeah, they're like, OK, yeah, that's we covered it in career
- 22:13in, you know, early life. In the name up top it just says
- 22:18Cameron Tyler. Parentheses gay.
- 22:22And if there is ever another Cameron Tyler, it's going to be
- 22:24like, did you mean Cameron Tyler the gay man?
- 22:27Or not. 01 thing we have to mention is as far as the casting
- 22:32goes is possibly one of the gayest things about the cast is
- 22:37there's a hairdresser played by Jennifer Coolidge with maybe one
- 22:42line. And they all go to her.
- 22:44They all go to the same hairdresser.
- 22:46She's basically their therapist. I loved it.
- 22:48She's their hairapist. Yeah, as they call her.
- 22:50As they call her, the only one who's in actual therapy is
- 22:54Howie. Yeah, and that and that.
- 22:56Adds up. And what does he talk about in
- 22:58therapy? How his friends are all getting
- 22:59their hair cut and talking to the hair cutting lady.
- 23:02Who is Jennifer Coolidge so good?
- 23:05It's so good. That was such a fun little
- 23:07cameo. The casting is really great,
- 23:10Yeah. I don't know if you saw in your
- 23:13web dive, yeah, but there's a website, as it turns out, called
- 23:18TV tropes.com. Have you ever heard of it?
- 23:22I don't think. So I had never heard of it
- 23:24before today, but I'm going to now be a frequent visitor
- 23:28because it's basically a website that takes a movie or a TV show
- 23:32and they list out all the tropes in it.
- 23:35That's so fun. And so they'll be like, oh, this
- 23:38movie has a nickname or someone who gives people nicknames.
- 23:42This movie has a a slack off. This movie has a geek.
- 23:48Like I love that. I love that this movie has so
- 23:51many yeah tropes. And I think what I love about it
- 23:55is it's this group of friends and every person is their own
- 23:59trope, but they're all still really cohesive.
- 24:01Yes, so I relate to, I don't think I'm any one of them.
- 24:08I think I relate to the pessimism of Patrick and I
- 24:12relate to the uptightness of Howie and the creativeness of
- 24:19what's Timothy Olyphants. Dennis Oh my God, how could I
- 24:22forget Dennis I don't relate at all to Kevin or Cole.
- 24:31And Oh yeah, Justin Theroux playing Marshall, which is
- 24:35Howie's like love interest who he's really judgement to love
- 24:39and they almost don't work out. But spoiler alert than they do.
- 24:42I relate to being in love with Justin Theroux for sure.
- 24:45So in that way I also relate to Howie.
- 24:47Absolutely yes. I think that, like, and Justin
- 24:50Theroux's character, Marshall is like, he smokes weed and he
- 24:54doesn't know what he wants to do with his life, but he always
- 24:57shows up. But in the beginning of the
- 24:59movie, all, all how he can focus on is the bad.
- 25:02Like, oh, God, he's like a mess. And then eventually he's like,
- 25:06he's a mess, but he loves me and I love him.
- 25:08Yeah. And it's so romantic.
- 25:10As if how he's not a mess himself.
- 25:12Well, and that's the theme of this movie.
- 25:15They're all messes. And I think that is why I think
- 25:18it has aged so well. Yes.
- 25:21Because have you seen Boys in the Band?
- 25:23Yes. OK, so that movie was, I mean,
- 25:26it was a play first, obviously, and it came out in like 1969,
- 25:32eight or nine. And then the first movie came
- 25:34out in 1970 and then they just remade it.
- 25:36They just made the new Netflix one in 2020.
- 25:39Well, that is another movie that I think has aged so well because
- 25:44the relationships between gay men are, I think, always just
- 25:49going to be like, messy. Everyone's going to have their
- 25:52own personality. There's always going to, for
- 25:55some reason, be an air of resentment no matter what.
- 26:00There's always going to be a tiny bit of jealousy no matter
- 26:02what, but there's always going to be a sisterhood, yeah, no
- 26:07matter what. Absolutely.
- 26:09There's like you get these these people together who have all
- 26:13been socialized as boys, so they've all been taught to be
- 26:17competitive and that this like scarcity mindset of like there's
- 26:21only so many opportunities out there and we all need to kind of
- 26:27tear each other down to get them.
- 26:28But then at the same time, the sisterhood of like, shared
- 26:32experience and like being an outsider and like.
- 26:36Yeah, and when shit hits the fan, they show up for each
- 26:38other. Exactly so.
- 26:41Which I love. Yeah.
- 26:42In fact, one of my favorite lines.
- 26:43I wrote it in my notes so that I don't get it wrong, Dennis says.
- 26:47And I think it was in the beginning or middle of the
- 26:50movie. One of his quotes is I can't
- 26:52decide if my friends are the best or worst thing that ever
- 26:56happened to me. I think that if you have a true
- 26:59best friend, at least at some point you ask yourself, was this
- 27:04person the literal worst thing that ever happened to me?
- 27:06Yeah, and if you haven't thought that.
- 27:09Then you're not best. Friends.
- 27:10You're not best friends. You're not best friends if
- 27:12you've only seen calm waters. Yes.
- 27:15And I love that line so much. I think, by the way, this is one
- 27:19of the best written movies ever as far as clever dialogue.
- 27:23I mean, it is definitely written for people who were born in the
- 27:2670s and early 80s. Like I think if you were born in
- 27:30that time, it's your peak. Like cultural references are for
- 27:33you and stuff like that. But it's so clever.
- 27:37There are so many good lines, there are so many relatable 1
- 27:41liners. It's so good.
- 27:44I mean, we were laughing in the theatre.
- 27:47The whole time. And this is 2024.
- 27:50This movie is 1/4 of a century old and it feels so relevant.
- 27:55It feels like if this were made today, it would have been a
- 28:00miniseries. It would have been ATV show.
- 28:03Like it probably wouldn't be made as a feature film today,
- 28:06which is why I'm glad that it was made as a feature film.
- 28:09Like, I'm glad that it is like an hour and a half that we like
- 28:12get to see these characters grow and change in a short period of
- 28:15time. But it does remind me a lot of
- 28:19the types of stories that we see today, especially like queer
- 28:22stories. Yes, where it's like it's just
- 28:25kind of a messy group of friends trying to figure out their
- 28:28lives. And I think that it's so clear
- 28:33that that Greg Berlanti, that's how we pronounce it, right?
- 28:39The Greg Berlanti. Yes, Greg Berlanti that he like,
- 28:43as I was watching this, I was like, oh, this is him and his
- 28:45friends, right? And then I looked it up and I
- 28:46was like, Yep, it is. Yeah, and his love interest,
- 28:51like the Howie Marshall thing, was based on him and an ex.
- 28:54I love. That it made me really happy,
- 28:57yeah. And I think the most significant
- 29:00thing about this movie is that it is a story about gay
- 29:04characters. Actually, you know what?
- 29:07It's very meta how he says this line.
- 29:10For once, I'd like to see a gay character who isn't sick, hasn't
- 29:13been laid in three months, and is behind on their student
- 29:16loans. And that's what this movie is.
- 29:19This is not a story about AIDS. This is, I mean, it's not
- 29:24exactly a story about coming out.
- 29:25One of the characters is in the process of coming out, but it's
- 29:29not a coming out story for all of them.
- 29:31It's just a story about like, adults trying to figure out
- 29:35their lives. Yes.
- 29:37And when I was watching it and thinking then when we when I
- 29:41knew we were going to do this episode, like what would I take
- 29:43out of it, if anything? Yeah, At first I thought, well,
- 29:46I would just take out the coming out storyline because that's a
- 29:48little antiquated. But then I thought, actually,
- 29:50no, it's not. I think it's important.
- 29:52I think that it's important that it was in there because it's not
- 29:54the story, but it is a story. Yeah, out of like 8 stories,
- 29:59yeah, one of them should probably be a coming out one.
- 30:01And also it's one of the best moments in the whole thing when
- 30:05he tells another character about it.
- 30:07Incredible. Did you write the line?
- 30:08That's great. I love Key Lime Pie and I'm gay.
- 30:11Yeah, that's how he comes out to his mom.
- 30:13And we don't even see him come out to his mom.
- 30:15It's Andrew Keegan telling Timothy Olyphant about coming
- 30:20out to his mom. And he is in the kitchen.
- 30:23And it's such a sweet little scene.
- 30:25And he's like, and my mom served the Key Lime Pie, and I said, I
- 30:29love Key Lime Pie and I'm gay. The theater.
- 30:32All eight of us were cackling. We loved it.
- 30:36All eight of us in the movie theater were cackling.
- 30:39Amazing. It was so good.
- 30:40But this, this movie has so much.
- 30:42I mean, OK, I have to share the lines that I wrote down because
- 30:45these are lines that I was like, if this were a movie today, or
- 30:50to be honest with you, how I would love to see this is as a
- 30:52stage play. This would be such a good stage
- 30:57play because it's got such a great ensemble.
- 31:00Yes. And here's the thing, it's kind
- 31:04of a reverse engineering of boys in the band, you know?
- 31:07Yes. Could be cool if we went back.
- 31:10To it really is if. We really should kind of just
- 31:12take it to the stage. I would love to see it.
- 31:15I would love to be in it. Same.
- 31:17I mean, we can't ever have an episode without talking about
- 31:20how we were doing. In it, yeah, because.
- 31:22Totally. We have to.
- 31:23And I wish that there was another character that wasn't
- 31:28just like the sister and her wife.
- 31:31Like it would have been cool if they had like kind of a token
- 31:35lesbian or just like kind of a token girl in the group.
- 31:39I wouldn't mind Billy Porter's character having been a lesbian,
- 31:44like going through a messy breakup.
- 31:46I want to see because those two lesbians they have are so stone
- 31:49cold and emotionless. Yeah, they're kind of, those two
- 31:53are kind of pigeonholed, you know, kind of this like these
- 31:57lesbian stereotypes of like, oh, they just want to settle down.
- 32:01And have a baby. And they have no sense of humor.
- 32:04And they have they they don't ever like cry or even like Nya.
- 32:09Long's character is just bitchy, but even that is really cold and
- 32:14impersonal. Bitchy in a fun way, She's
- 32:16bitchy in sort of just a mean way.
- 32:18Exactly. And so I think if you took Billy
- 32:20Porter's character Taylor, who's going through the breakup and is
- 32:24so obnoxious about everything, redecorates the house with an
- 32:28African theme, even though he's only a houseguest, and then they
- 32:32call him Mufasa, which I'm like, I don't know about that.
- 32:36Also lol. But also, it's so funny.
- 32:38And we all know which character I would be in this movie, and
- 32:43it's him. I would pay so much money, thank
- 32:47you for you to be the one going through a messy breakup and then
- 32:51you have just a horde of gay men taking care of you.
- 32:55I would love that I. Would love that too.
- 32:58Because I was, at first, I was like, well, I think it'd be cute
- 33:02to have a girl play the Cole character, Dean Kane's
- 33:08character. Like, she's a hot softball girl.
- 33:12She's a womanizer. Totally.
- 33:14She's a hey Mama and. You know what I would I cuz who
- 33:17I'm thinking of. Did you ever watch sex life of
- 33:20College girls? Yeah, how Renee Rapp in that was
- 33:23like a hot lesbian and just. It was about how hot she was.
- 33:29Yeah, I'm like good for. Her and period.
- 33:31That's exactly right. And she that's how the Dean Kane
- 33:34character, I think would translate into her character on
- 33:37that show. Absolutely, yeah.
- 33:38We wouldn't have sex lives with college girls without Broken
- 33:41Hearts Club. That's what I think.
- 33:43Well, you said it. Thanks and I have to agree
- 33:46cosine cosine. But I wrote down some lines that
- 33:49I think are aged really well. OK, let's hear them.
- 33:52OK, so the first one is by Howie.
- 33:56OK. I think I've probably said some
- 33:58variation of this before. Dumb gorgeous people should not
- 34:03be allowed to use literature when competing in the pickup
- 34:06pool. It's like bald people wearing
- 34:08hats. It's deceiving.
- 34:10That is so real. I I did laugh out loud.
- 34:14Or I hate you know, when gays do it, gays do that.
- 34:17We're talking about music. Oh my God, I have a friend who
- 34:21just went through this. I have a friend who just went
- 34:24through this where he was bamboozled by a gay man who used
- 34:29he weaponized cool music. Oh, I could totally he.
- 34:33Weaponized it. That is a thing gay men do.
- 34:35They'll be like, oh, I'm really into Fiona Apple.
- 34:39Yeah, or like, oh, did you listen to the new Lord album?
- 34:43Oh, give me a break. Give me a fucking.
- 34:46Give me a break. As if I don't do that all the
- 34:48time. I mean, I do it all the time.
- 34:52I have listened to the new Lord album, but of course, did I tell
- 34:54everyone about it? Yeah, yeah, of course, one of
- 34:58the ones that is said by Jack, who is the patriarch of this.
- 35:02Yeah, which this adds an extra layer because he obviously is
- 35:06coming from an older era. So he's seen stuff even by 2000.
- 35:12And he tells. I think it's Dennis.
- 35:14He says, sometimes I wonder what you boys would do if you weren't
- 35:18gay. You'd have no identity.
- 35:20It was easy when you couldn't talk about it.
- 35:23Now it's all you talk about. You talk about it so much that
- 35:25you forget about all the other things that you are.
- 35:29Yeah. That is so real.
- 35:32Yeah. That is timeless.
- 35:33That will continue to age well, forever because as like a gay
- 35:40man, I even did that. I like, there's literally a
- 35:43chunk in my book where I was like, yeah, I came out and I had
- 35:46to make it my whole personality. And part of I in my opinion,
- 35:51some gays might hate me for this.
- 35:53OK, get ready to be cancelled. Part of the gay experience
- 35:56should be learning what you are besides gay because a lot of 30
- 36:02something 40 something people don't know what they are besides
- 36:06gay. All of the men in this movie
- 36:09have something that they're unwilling to admit about
- 36:13themselves, and they would be just so much better off.
- 36:18They would be so much happier, so much more fulfilled.
- 36:20Their quality of life. Say, yeah, I think I'm ugly and
- 36:25I need to work through that. You know I need to work, I need
- 36:27to work on myself image or. Fucking Benji.
- 36:30I have a little bit of a meth problem.
- 36:32Yeah, just a tiny. Bit just like it is just it's a
- 36:35tiny bit. I mean, it's, yeah, it's short
- 36:37lived at first. I was like.
- 36:39Honestly, show more meth. More meth.
- 36:41More meth. I would really take him down the
- 36:43rabbit hole if we remade this. I really think that we needed
- 36:47more meth in this movie. It could have been a lot sadder,
- 36:52but you know what? I don't know.
- 36:53There's part of me that's like, I want this movie to be sadder.
- 36:56And then I'm also like, no, I don't.
- 36:58The sadness creeps in at the end.
- 37:01Oh, it does. Did do you think that Jack had
- 37:05to die? So we're spoiling that.
- 37:07OK, good. Well, yeah, I mean, if you
- 37:10haven't watched the movie, you're sick and you should still
- 37:12watch it, spoilers or not. But I.
- 37:14Think. I did actually ask myself, would
- 37:18I kill Jack off still? Jack off, Jack off.
- 37:21I heard it too. Would I kill off Jack still?
- 37:26I think now I would kill off the loving husband.
- 37:29Oh, who didn't have any lines anyway.
- 37:32But at the same time, I'm like, would that have the same impact?
- 37:35I don't know. And I would like it to have the
- 37:37impact. And also I love the idea of, I
- 37:41mean, literally one of my favorite themes is legacy.
- 37:44And I think that really drives home the whole legacy theme of
- 37:49this movie when he died and they realize that all they have is
- 37:53each other now. Yes, I think it would have been
- 37:55so much better because then they would have said, Oh my gosh,
- 37:58like we never even knew his name.
- 38:00We called our this role model of ours who we spend all our time
- 38:05with his partner. We never say his name.
- 38:08We literally just call him purple guy.
- 38:09I thought that was a little bit weird.
- 38:11It's like that's what you call someone when you first meet them
- 38:13and you don't know their name yet.
- 38:14Which they do in this movie all the time.
- 38:16Like Idaho guy? Idaho guy, that was so funny.
- 38:19They're like, they're like, why do you call him Idaho guy?
- 38:21They're like, doesn't, don't you think he just looks like he's
- 38:23from Idaho? Yeah, they don't even know if
- 38:24he's from Idaho. I know.
- 38:25And I love you know what? That's also really relatable.
- 38:27Who has not done that? Ohh, of course.
- 38:30Are you still going out with? Yeah, Waker, Oats guy, we all
- 38:32have our names for like we do. Yeah, totally.
- 38:36But it that's because oftentimes it's in the beginning when you
- 38:39can't be bothered to remember someone's name.
- 38:41This is like basically their father-in-law, OK?
- 38:45And they don't even know his name.
- 38:46I know that's. All their softball games, I know
- 38:49they should have learned his name, but they're all too
- 38:51self-centered to. Do and they're in their 20s.
- 38:54Exactly. And they're gay, so some things
- 38:56never change. Am I right?
- 38:59That that I think I would. I would leave that the same
- 39:03yeah, I would leave that the same.
- 39:05But I love the wisdom that that character brings and and I think
- 39:10that's why I would keep it the same is because it makes
- 39:12everything he does in the movie more meaningful.
- 39:16And Jack dies of what we what is probably a heart attack.
- 39:21It totally is. He dies of something that isn't
- 39:24AIDS related and I think that's important.
- 39:26That's important to see somebody, you know, just kind of
- 39:30die of natural causes and not that it doesn't have to be.
- 39:33Yeah. I mean, of course, I don't want
- 39:34to say like, you know, no more AIDS storylines, but like, I
- 39:38think it was important that they showed that.
- 39:40Well, and one thing I will say is it's almost, I don't want to
- 39:45say it was smart of them not to put it in, but it's one thing
- 39:48that there's no way they could have talked about AIDS at that
- 39:51time that would have aged well. Because even when we watched all
- 39:54over the guy, part of that when he's interacting with Doris
- 39:57Roberts is that he's waiting to get tested for HIV.
- 40:01And the conversations about that you would even have with someone
- 40:05at an HIV testing place are so different than they were then.
- 40:08There's no way that could have aged well.
- 40:10And so at first I was like, would I add something in about
- 40:12that? And I'm like, well.
- 40:14If we were doing a story about gay men, it would probably
- 40:17include stuff about hookup culture and therefore would
- 40:19probably include some kind of joke at least about Prep.
- 40:22Yeah, for sure. But I appreciate.
- 40:23Maybe like new prep just dropped.
- 40:25Yeah, every time that a new prep drops.
- 40:28Like a new shot. My new pill my I have a group
- 40:31chat where we always the group chat name is always just like
- 40:35the new prep that dropped. And that is your next OGT.
- 40:38Exactly. That's an obviously gay trait.
- 40:41You are a gay man. And I've, I literally have
- 40:44always said that. Yeah.
- 40:45Absolutely. One of the other lines that I
- 40:47really loved was by Taylor, AKA the character you're going to
- 40:51take over of. Course.
- 40:53But this was just very Sex in the City to me.
- 40:55It's when he found out that his boyfriend didn't want to be with
- 40:58him anymore and he said I was left for another man.
- 41:02And not just any other man, a trainer.
- 41:05A trainer named Dash was left for a punctuation mark.
- 41:10That is some Carrie Bradshaw shit.
- 41:13I would love the opportunity to say that I want to get a
- 41:15boyfriend just for him to leave me for a trainer named Dash.
- 41:19Yeah, that line is so good. It is so funny the writing in
- 41:23this movie. Actually that's like my last one
- 41:27because the last one I had was by Kevin, which was it just kind
- 41:30of slipped out. My mom said she made some Key
- 41:32Lime Pie and I said great, I love Key Lime Pie and I'm gay.
- 41:36And I'm gay. Key Lime Pie is the gay icon.
- 41:42Like remember when everyone was saying The Babadook was the new
- 41:44gay icon? Absolutely.
- 41:45Key Lime Pie. Yeah, put it on T-shirts.
- 41:48Absolutely. Let it leave the Pride parade.
- 41:51The the new a Grand Marshall. Plate of Key Lime Pie on the
- 41:56front of a convertible? Yes, with the new pride flag.
- 41:59Yes, whatever it is by next. Marie Calendar is the new
- 42:03sponsor of Pride. Someone needs to because can we
- 42:05just talk about this for a minute?
- 42:06The main sponsor of Pride this year was the Mortuary.
- 42:09That was tough. Like when I opened my 5K bag and
- 42:13I pulled out a full magazine for the Mortuary, Yeah, I was like,
- 42:17this is 2 on the nose. He said Babes, we're gonna let
- 42:21you all die. Babes, Babes.
- 42:24I mean, pride is dead. Everyone does die and it's very
- 42:27smart actually of them to go for the gay market.
- 42:30Because guess what? If you're a Mortuary, what is
- 42:35your, what's like, you know, what's the market?
- 42:38All people, Because all people die.
- 42:41And you know, actually at Pride, no mortuaries ever try to show
- 42:45their support for me. Until now.
- 42:47Until now. So maybe it's a good thing that
- 42:48all these corporate sponsors pulled out of pride and are
- 42:51embarrassed of gay people now. Yeah, because now we know who
- 42:54our real allies are, our allies in life and death.
- 42:59Yep, at least I'll have a home after I'm dead.
- 43:03They don't give a shit about you now, but at least they'll care
- 43:06when you're dead. Oh God OK, one of my favorite
- 43:09lines. Oh yes.
- 43:11Is well I have a few OK so Jack says to which one is it Patrick
- 43:20He says some people are just gay and average we're the strongest
- 43:24I think cuz he's like instead of telling him like no you're not
- 43:29you're not ugly you're hot or like you just need to love
- 43:33yourself he's. Gonna embrace it.
- 43:34He's like, why not? Why not just be neutral?
- 43:37You know, maybe you're just gay and average.
- 43:40That's another reason I think this movie aged well, because
- 43:44there will always be average gay men, yeah, who feel hideous.
- 43:50I'm right here. And yet.
- 43:53And yet I'm amazing. Period.
- 43:56That's also part of the gay journey, yeah, Realizing, yeah,
- 44:00you do look average, but on the inside, you're amazing.
- 44:07So you have so many other good qualities.
- 44:09It's fun. I'd rather it be this way
- 44:10because a lot of gay men just stop at what they are on the
- 44:13outside, so if they're hot they never even find out what's on
- 44:15the inside. Exactly, and that's why they're
- 44:17using the new Lord album or literature to make themselves
- 44:21interesting. Correct.
- 44:23But to be clear, you are gorgeous.
- 44:27Wow, that's a nice. Thing I would never say that
- 44:29you're just gay and average. So you won't be playing Jack.
- 44:33I won't be playing Jack. OK, So also someone does say how
- 44:38he says you do the math. And I looked at you when we were
- 44:41watching this. I was like Cameron.
- 44:43You literally grabbed my arm and I grabbed my heart because I,
- 44:48you know, I love that. Saying.
- 44:51Which also wasn't all over the guy and I didn't know what the
- 44:54time like did. I actually picked this up a long
- 44:56time ago from all over the guy. Now I'm like, maybe I picked it
- 44:59up from the Broken Hearts club. I loved it.
- 45:01I loved. It you do the math.
- 45:02And it was, and it was in the context of actually doing math,
- 45:06which I thought was so funny because typically it's not.
- 45:11And that's another thing I love about that line.
- 45:13But in this example, he's talking about the other baseball
- 45:16team that they're playing softball, baseball, whatever.
- 45:19And he's like, OK, so it's a team of 11, and statistically,
- 45:22one out of every 10 men is gay You.
- 45:24Do the math, you do the math. I said that's a perfect way to
- 45:28use that line. Howie, way to go.
- 45:30Well it's also the most imperfect way to use it cuz it's
- 45:34so funny when you use it. It has.
- 45:35Nothing. It has nothing to do with math.
- 45:37That's so. True.
- 45:38I'm like I'm a gay and I got in a car accident.
- 45:40You do math. You.
- 45:40Do the math and honestly saying you do the math is one of your
- 45:44Ogts. Oh, you're so right that and and
- 45:47just like that. Exactly.
- 45:50I love a drop in that. One I know.
- 45:52And I've always said that I those are my things.
- 45:57Yeah, I need, actually need to turn up the.
- 45:59You do the math. Yeah, you do.
- 46:01I really don't think enough people know that about me until
- 46:04now. Until now.
- 46:05And then you do the math. You do the math, all right?
- 46:09I believe there are gay numbers is what 1 of Howie's dates says.
- 46:14To him, that's so good. And that was so funny.
- 46:18Because you know what I think if I asked any gay man, do you
- 46:21believe there's such thing as a gay number?
- 46:23Yeah. I believe somewhere around 100%
- 46:28would say yeah, Yeah. And if I said why?
- 46:31No idea. No, no further comment, he said.
- 46:35Have you ever considered the number 38?
- 46:39You do the math. You do the math, OK.
- 46:42And then one thing that really this is not a favorite line, but
- 46:47a line that stuck out to me because it reminded me that
- 46:51marriage equality was still like 12 years away.
- 46:54Oh, yeah. They keep, they kept saying
- 46:56about that actor, he's not gay. He's married.
- 46:59In my mind when I first heard it, I go, oh, well, And he's
- 47:02they didn't say he's married to a woman.
- 47:04They just said he's married. I said, Oh yeah, that's.
- 47:07Supposed to be assumed. That is the only way 2000 were
- 47:12married. Whoa, yeah.
- 47:14Not even in one state at that time was it legal.
- 47:17Not even in Massachusetts? Nope.
- 47:19For another four years. Crazy, yeah.
- 47:21Yeah. So yeah, that kind of rocked me
- 47:26a little bit that this movie is, yeah, it's 25 years old, but
- 47:30that's not that long ago. Billy Porter looks the same.
- 47:35Billy Porter has not aged. No.
- 47:37In 25 years, yet it was still so far from just marriage equality,
- 47:43it. Was let me ask you if you would
- 47:45keep this storyline in or what do you think about the closeted
- 47:48actor storyline? Oh, I liked it.
- 47:50You like that? Would you like it for now?
- 47:53Yeah, because I think there are still so many closeted actors in
- 47:56Hollywood. Especially.
- 47:58Like in that age range, like and they have a beard that they're
- 48:02married to and like they just hook up with the extra in their
- 48:09in their trailer in which and he said I'm not an extra.
- 48:11I love that when he stood up for himself, he's like, I have 7
- 48:13lines. OK, I've been here a month.
- 48:15That's real. Yeah, that is real.
- 48:17I. Feel that way?
- 48:18Yeah, I would. Yeah, I thought that it was, it
- 48:22was a good reminder. I think it would be even a good
- 48:25reminder today that, like, there's still so many,
- 48:29especially men in Hollywood who are closeted because of, you
- 48:33know. I think I would turn that
- 48:35storyline up. Like in the movie, he and the
- 48:40main actor guy are hooking or they're not even hooking up.
- 48:46Yeah, they're about to hook up. Yeah.
- 48:47And then? But it's assumed that they've
- 48:49been hooking. Up.
- 48:50Yeah, and they've been hooking up, but then there's like a
- 48:52knock on the door and they're thrown.
- 48:54And then that's the end of that story.
- 48:57I would have had them get caught by the beard wife and then I
- 49:01would have had the beard wife be like, I don't care because she
- 49:04has a girlfriend. Literally.
- 49:07That's what I would have. That would have been fun.
- 49:08Well, that's what we will do. It's what we will do when we
- 49:11make this movie in our. Studio where we remake movies
- 49:13because there are now a growing amount.
- 49:16Yes, absolutely. We have a lot of work to do.
- 49:19A lot, but I think that it was really interesting to see how
- 49:23that character Cole, who's usually he's used to being arm
- 49:26candy, you know, he's used to being shown off.
- 49:29He is used to saying this right here is the money maker.
- 49:33The tables have turned and he has to like reckon with that.
- 49:37And it's I mean, it's really sad to see like obviously he's
- 49:40devastated that he's being like hidden by this guy.
- 49:44I mean, he knew what he was getting into when he started
- 49:46hooking up with a closeted guy, but still, it was interesting to
- 49:50see how that character dealt with that, and I think that that
- 49:53is timeless. I think so too, and upon
- 49:57remembering that, Taylor's now going to be you.
- 50:01Right. Or I think actually we should
- 50:06just make both girls OK, and that way the actor's also a girl
- 50:12OK? Because then the hot closeted
- 50:14actor's a woman. Yeah, I would like to see a
- 50:18closeted woman actor. Yeah.
- 50:20And like, she's closeted in the year 2025 because her whole
- 50:24TikTok following is thirsty young men and she has to sit in
- 50:29the closet. Oh my God.
- 50:30Even though I don't know if that works the same because, you
- 50:32know, young men would probably love if she was a lesbian.
- 50:35They'd be like kiss, kiss. Yeah, yeah, I don't.
- 50:37Know, maybe that's what she's trying to avoid, Maybe I don't
- 50:40know. We have some stuff to work out.
- 50:41Yeah. Look, we'll get there.
- 50:43We're ideating. Yeah.
- 50:46Can you believe that That Greg Berlanti was 32 when he directed
- 50:51this? I love that he was 32 when he
- 50:53directed this he. Wrote it when he was graduating
- 50:56college. He wrote this movie in his 20s.
- 50:58I think that's why he feels so real.
- 51:00Yeah. He wrote it before he was, like,
- 51:02too enveloped in the industry. Yeah.
- 51:07He had worked on Dawson's Creek, right?
- 51:10Yeah. And like in the future, he ended
- 51:14up doing Love Simon. He directed Love Simon, and Love
- 51:19Simon came out 18 years after this movie did.
- 51:22And for the record, I when Love Simon came down, came out, that
- 51:27fucked me up. I went to go see that movie, I'm
- 51:30not kidding, in the theater 12 times.
- 51:32Wow. I went and then I would ask
- 51:35another person, have you seen Love Simon yet?
- 51:36And they're like, no. And I'm like, will you go with
- 51:38me? Oh my God, A few times I went by
- 51:39myself. Wow, I love that movie so much.
- 51:43I felt like it was so relatable. It was so well directed and it
- 51:46also was a little more sanitized than this.
- 51:50And I like that this is a little not.
- 51:53And maybe part of that is because of the time they said
- 51:56some jokes. Maybe they wouldn't say now we
- 51:58have better quality cameras now. But just like All in all, it
- 52:03felt very real. Yeah.
- 52:05It, I think that's part of also why it holds up.
- 52:08Yeah, it's really universal feeling.
- 52:11How do you think? Like what's your opinion as not
- 52:14a gay man about this movie feeling universal?
- 52:17I think that it does feel OK. So on the one hand, I feel like
- 52:23this movie was made by and for gay men in a way.
- 52:30However, I don't think that it as like watching it as a woman.
- 52:36I don't feel like, oh, I can never understand or like, oh,
- 52:39this wasn't made for me. This movie still, I think maybe
- 52:43because I'm in my early 30s, I'm like, no, this movie feels made
- 52:45for me. Like my friends and I just like
- 52:49trying to figure out life and like being messy and the feeling
- 52:54of like trying to figure out who you are and like hating but also
- 52:58loving your friends and and the feeling of like just trying to
- 53:04feel where you fit in and. Yeah, I think a lot of it is
- 53:09about being in that age range where you're asking yourself a
- 53:14lot of questions about what you want and who you want to be, and
- 53:17not only who you want to be to yourself, but who you want to be
- 53:20to other people. Like one of the things I love,
- 53:23like everyone has development, character development throughout
- 53:27this movie, But Dennis or Timothy Olyphant's character,
- 53:30his whole thing is that he's kind of avoid it in the
- 53:34beginning. And you know from early on that
- 53:38he doesn't want to feel lonely, but he's not Patrick cynical,
- 53:43but he's still cynical and he's just scared.
- 53:46And he also like he just feels jaded in a way because he just
- 53:51knows too much, but he's not mad about it, but he just accepts
- 53:54that's the way it is. And then when this whole
- 53:56storyline happens and he gets to kind of re encounter the naive
- 54:02video that is being young through Andrew Keegan character.
- 54:06Yeah, it kind of reminds him of like, oh, this is so sweet.
- 54:10Yeah. And like, no, I do want this.
- 54:13And maybe not. It's not with the young guy
- 54:15who's just coming out. But right.
- 54:16But he realizes how important it is to have his friends.
- 54:19Exactly that is exact. That's what he learns from
- 54:23mentoring Andrew Keegan's character is that having friends
- 54:27is the most important thing. Yeah, because they do the
- 54:29bookend thing, which I love, where in the beginning he says.
- 54:33I don't remember when I first realized I was gay, but I
- 54:36remember when I first realized it was OK It was because of my
- 54:39friends. And then at the end of the
- 54:40movie, it's the newly out guy saying, I don't remember when I
- 54:44first realized I was gay, but I remember when I first realized
- 54:46it was OK. These guys so sweet.
- 54:49It is the sweetest, Yeah. Most wholesome gay movie you'll
- 54:53ever see that doesn't feel cheesy.
- 54:55Yes, because it just because so much of it is funny and clever
- 55:01and not just like jokes that you would expect.
- 55:05And while while each of these characters is kind of their own
- 55:09trope, they're not they're not so simple that they're just like
- 55:15a trope. Only I feel like we can kind of
- 55:18pick out like, you know, like the neurotic one, the hot one,
- 55:23that all of that, but they're still full characters.
- 55:27Yeah, they still have depth. Which is amazing to have fully
- 55:31developed characters, so many of them I know in a 90 minute
- 55:35movie, that's incredible. Actually, that really is, and I
- 55:39never really thought about it, but yeah, they all have their
- 55:42own arcs. They all have their own things
- 55:45besides being gay. Yeah.
- 55:47They all have pretty transformative storylines in 90
- 55:54minutes. And I think in part that's
- 55:56because this isn't a super plot driven movie.
- 56:00It is really more of a character driven movie.
- 56:02That's so true. Like it's about their
- 56:04development. Yeah, but not overtly.
- 56:07Like it just. It's so organic.
- 56:09Yeah. Is what it is.
- 56:11Yes. Yeah.
- 56:11It's not plot driven. It's character driven.
- 56:14It's organic. It's so good.
- 56:17And you know what? I think that it's so clear that
- 56:21this movie is written by a gay man because even when they like,
- 56:25when they like, use F slurs and when they're, like, joking
- 56:28around and like making fun of themselves, it comes from a
- 56:31place of, like, it comes from a place of love and like, we're
- 56:35making fun of ourselves and doesn't feel like, oh, I don't
- 56:39like that they wrote that for this character.
- 56:41You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 56:42Even though they're all kind of caddy with each other, it's a
- 56:45lot less mean spirited than boys in the band.
- 56:48Like when boys in the band, it really turns in the second act
- 56:52to like a darker tone and everyone starts drinking and
- 56:56their real truths come out. Yeah, it gets pretty dark, but I
- 57:00feel like even the truths that lie within them are not nearly
- 57:04as dark. No.
- 57:06And. And it is a thing where they all
- 57:09really, really love each other. Yeah, there's so much love.
- 57:12So pure I know. One thing I thought about is if
- 57:15we made it now, would I put more sex in it because it is a 2000
- 57:21gay movie in the sense that there's no sex depicted, yeah.
- 57:26But also I kind of like that. They talk about it a lot, which
- 57:30I like. I like that they talk about sex
- 57:32a lot, but they don't like, I mean, I'm not like I'm glad they
- 57:36don't show it, but I like that they talked about it a lot.
- 57:40I like that they talk about it, but I do like that they don't
- 57:42show it, really. I like that they don't lend a
- 57:46minute of the movie to that. Yeah, actually, there's not
- 57:51enough time. There's not enough time.
- 57:52You have too many characters, and it's so character driven
- 57:57that I feel like unless there was a really good reason for one
- 58:01of them to have a scene where they're having sex.
- 58:04Yeah. I think part of what makes the
- 58:07movie so good is it keeps moving.
- 58:11And in my opinion, a lot of times, sex scenes slow movies
- 58:15down. Yeah.
- 58:16Especially because at this point it's like I can watch this on my
- 58:20own time, get back to the story. Sure, wrap it up.
- 58:22Wrap it up, Yeah. Totally.
- 58:25So. Anyway, well, one thing that I
- 58:27didn't love about the way that like they talk about sex in the
- 58:31way that sexuality is depicted in this movie is they're working
- 58:36under the assumption that being in a relationship or wanting to
- 58:40be in a relationship equals maturity.
- 58:44And the way that Dennis is like, oh, well.
- 58:47I, I can't do this like hookup thing anymore because I'm
- 58:52evolved like this idea that like you're more evolved if you are
- 58:55in a relationship or want a relationship.
- 58:57And even though they tried to kind of poke holes in that with
- 59:01Taylor's character because he's like as a person in a
- 59:03relationship, blah, blah, blah, and he gets knocked off of his
- 59:06high horse, there's still this central theme of like.
- 59:11It's still the ideal. Yeah, it's still the ideal to be
- 59:14in this like long term committed relationship and that that means
- 59:18that you've, you know, developed as an adult.
- 59:21Yeah, Although I will say what I really like that they do is that
- 59:26when Andrew Keegan's character is like really coming out and
- 59:30you know that Dennis has feelings for him, but at the end
- 59:34he's like, you're young and you should be.
- 59:37You should play the field. Yeah.
- 59:39And yeah, you're right. Like at the end of the day, the
- 59:43trajectory that they're clearly promoting is that you should
- 59:47play the field and then that way you can get it out of your
- 59:50system. Yeah.
- 59:51Exactly. It's like, oh, you're young, you
- 59:53should play the field. Yeah.
- 59:54So I'm glad they at least did that.
- 59:56But you're right, like at the end of it, all of them do still,
- 1:00:00which that's very 2000. I think that's something that
- 1:00:02maybe I would tweak. I bet OK if we were to remake
- 1:00:05this today, one or two of them would be Paulie and it would be
- 1:00:08so messy. Oh God, maybe that would be
- 1:00:11Taylor's thing. Oh my God.
- 1:00:14OK. Like I think Taylor's thing
- 1:00:16should actually be that she she agreed to be in a triad and then
- 1:00:21the other two shot. Vacation together without her
- 1:00:24and decide it and they like they FaceTime her and they're like,
- 1:00:27look, it's not gonna work. I need to get in touch with Greg
- 1:00:30Brillantine now. And you know what's great about
- 1:00:32Taylor is that we don't even have to change the name.
- 1:00:35No, we don't. You are Taylor.
- 1:00:37Works for a boy or girl, yeah. Yeah, I mean, you and Billy
- 1:00:40Porter basically the same. And I've always said that.
- 1:00:43I really you do the math, you do the math.
- 1:00:46OK, Cameron, what else do we have to discuss with this movie
- 1:00:49as we creep up on an hour? What?
- 1:00:52Oh wait, I do have to ask you a question.
- 1:00:54OK, who would you kick out of bed?
- 1:00:56Grimace or the Hamburglar? That is a question that they ask
- 1:01:01and I want to know your answer. I would kick Grimace out of bed
- 1:01:05because since I was a literal child, I had a thing for the
- 1:01:08hamburger. And can I just tell you, as you
- 1:01:13know, I don't drink. But before I quit drinking, when
- 1:01:17I was like at my messiest death. And you know, where I live at
- 1:01:21the Spire, there's a common area where people can leave food
- 1:01:27deliveries if they can't get up to their floor.
- 1:01:30One night I came home drunk and it was like 3:00 AM and someone
- 1:01:36had ordered McDonald's but they hadn't made it downstairs to get
- 1:01:39it yet. You are the Hamburglar.
- 1:01:41I grabbed the bag I got in the elevator, and I've never felt
- 1:01:47cooler in my life than when I was on my way up to the 41st
- 1:01:51floor with a bag of stolen McDonald's.
- 1:01:54And guess what? I don't remember eating it at
- 1:01:57all. I just know when I woke up in
- 1:01:59the morning, I went, it smells like McDonald's.
- 1:02:03And I went into my kitchen and as if a bear had come into my
- 1:02:07house, like an actual bear, there were just wrappers and
- 1:02:12cartoons all over the counter. And I was like, did I do this?
- 1:02:18And so then I quit drinking. Wow.
- 1:02:20Really soon after that, actually.
- 1:02:22Like actually that was like a month before I quit.
- 1:02:24Drinking You said this is a wake up call but also.
- 1:02:27Was like the Hamburglar. New kink unlocked?
- 1:02:29Kind of maybe. Stealing McDonald's.
- 1:02:32I mean, yeah, like, yeah, no. It gave me a whole renewed
- 1:02:35appreciation for the Hamburglar. I would love to see Marvel dip
- 1:02:40their toes into a Hamburglar franchise.
- 1:02:43God, I don't know. I would definitely not kick him
- 1:02:46out of bed, though. And Grimace scares the shit out
- 1:02:48of me. I I don't even really have room
- 1:02:50to be scared because I promise all my life Grimace is my my
- 1:02:56sister's number one fear. What?
- 1:02:59I, for her birthday last year, drew a card of grimace holding a
- 1:03:04knife saying I'm going to kill you, happy birthday.
- 1:03:07Because my sister, since we were children, is terrified of the
- 1:03:12grimace. It is my sister's biggest fear.
- 1:03:15Wow. So anyway, I would kick him out
- 1:03:19of bed. I don't.
- 1:03:20I don't care for him. Totally.
- 1:03:21And you're an ally to your sister, you know?
- 1:03:23I'm an ally to my sister. I can't be fucking the enemy.
- 1:03:27Yeah. No, no, no, Hamburglar in bed
- 1:03:31forever. Wow.
- 1:03:33The stripes, the Zorro hat, the mask.
- 1:03:36Are you kidding? It's the mask it's giving
- 1:03:37Antonio Banderas. It is, you know, he's hot, so
- 1:03:42that's a crazy question. Bye.
- 1:03:47If someone wouldn't wow say that, I'd be worried.
- 1:03:51Yeah, I don't want to meet them. No, no, keep them away.
- 1:03:55Anything else that we haven't discussed?
- 1:03:57I think like I'm begging everyone to watch this movie.
- 1:04:02If you watch no other movie to be like, to understand what it's
- 1:04:08like to be in a gay friend group, watch this movie.
- 1:04:13This and Boys in the Band I think are the two most accurate
- 1:04:15portrayals of gay friendship in cinema.
- 1:04:18Wow. Yeah.
- 1:04:20Yeah, I mean. It aged so well.
- 1:04:23I can't think of another movie that portrays gay friendship
- 1:04:27better than this. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:29And it's honestly even better than Boys in the Band because
- 1:04:31Boys in the Band is antiquated in the fact that their whole
- 1:04:35like, if the thing in this movie is that they all think you
- 1:04:37should be married even if you're gay, Like you should be in a
- 1:04:40committed relationship. The thing in Boys in the Band is
- 1:04:43they all have internalized homophobia still, and they all
- 1:04:45hate that they're gay. So like, this has aged better
- 1:04:49than that. I would say.
- 1:04:51It's like my number one movie about gay friendship.
- 1:04:55Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:04:56So not my #1 gay movie, because, you know, my specific gay niche
- 1:04:59is movies about AIDS. Of course, yeah.
- 1:05:03We all have our thing. Look, we all need to cry
- 1:05:05sometimes. Yeah, they make the they're the
- 1:05:07best movies, but this is a really good one about gay
- 1:05:10friendship. Yeah.
- 1:05:13Friends. Friends they It's so interesting
- 1:05:16that the subtitle of the movie is a romantic comedy.
- 1:05:21The The title of this movie is is.
- 1:05:25Sorry, what the fuck are we? Talking Broken Arts Club, a
- 1:05:28romantic comedy. Romantic comedy.
- 1:05:30No, I agree. In fact, I saw when I was like
- 1:05:32doing my little refresh online today, I saw one of the articles
- 1:05:36was like, they call this a ROM com, but it's really more of a
- 1:05:39dramedy. And I'm like, yeah, correct.
- 1:05:41Yeah, it is. And that is so.
- 1:05:46It's so Greg Berlanti coded because dramedy is not his
- 1:05:49thing. Well, he loves drama.
- 1:05:51He loves drama and loves the dramedy.
- 1:05:53And loves the dramedy. Who doesn't?
- 1:05:55Come on. But I think that The thing is,
- 1:06:01it's not really. Yeah.
- 1:06:03It's like, not really a romantic comedy, but I think.
- 1:06:05But I think that they needed to call it that so that people knew
- 1:06:10that it was a fun movie. Yeah, I think it.
- 1:06:14Yeah, I think if you're in the move to watch a ROM com, you're
- 1:06:17still going to be satisfied. Totally.
- 1:06:19That's not how I cost. There's ROM and there's calm.
- 1:06:21Yeah, but it's not a ROM com. Yeah, just watch it on a
- 1:06:26Tuesday. Yeah.
- 1:06:28Doesn't need to be Valentine's Day.
- 1:06:29Doesn't need to be pride. No.
- 1:06:31And it certainly can't be both at the same time, which is kind
- 1:06:34of homophobic. Honestly, it is, yeah.
- 1:06:36Yeah, pride is every day. Period.
- 1:06:39Mm hmm. And you've always said.
- 1:06:42That and I have always said that.
- 1:06:45Do you want to tell the people what you what you're looking
- 1:06:49forward to with your future projects?
- 1:06:52What I'm looking forward to is becoming Molly's sister.
- 1:06:56That's what she's referring to because my show, the Cameron
- 1:07:01Show, we just wrapped our first season.
- 1:07:03Congratulations. Thank you and first season I did
- 1:07:07completely self produced so it was like me and my best friend
- 1:07:12Michael. I was just.
- 1:07:12Gonna you got producer Michael I.
- 1:07:14Was gonna say do not leave out Michael.
- 1:07:16I would never leave out Michael. Michael was my savior during
- 1:07:20this project and mostly it was just important to me to do the
- 1:07:25first season at my house and like on my own to see if I even
- 1:07:28liked having a podcast. I think that's so wise.
- 1:07:31Because it's hard. It actually just so everyone
- 1:07:34knows, it's really hard to have a podcast.
- 1:07:36And thank you so much for saying that.
- 1:07:37And you know what? Yeah, cuz you know, 50% of you
- 1:07:40probably have one, but yeah, it's really hard to keep it
- 1:07:44going is the thing. And so I just needed to see if I
- 1:07:48even liked it. Turns out I love it.
- 1:07:50Turns out you're great at it, but we knew that.
- 1:07:52It's so fun. We knew you'd be good at it.
- 1:07:54It was just a matter of like, will you like it?
- 1:07:56Yeah. Could I tolerate it?
- 1:07:58Yeah. Turns out yes to both.
- 1:08:00So instead of producing at my house anymore, we're moving the
- 1:08:04show to Dude IDK Studios, and I'm so excited.
- 1:08:09I will miss working with producer Michael because he is
- 1:08:11my straight husband and he's really did he really put in the
- 1:08:18work. He really did.
- 1:08:20But now we get producer Nick. Yay, So exciting.
- 1:08:25So exciting. So yeah, I'm really, really,
- 1:08:27really excited. We're going to come back in the
- 1:08:29fall and I just love knowing we're going to be sisters.
- 1:08:35I know, me too. We were always meant to be.
- 1:08:37I know. Give me your hand.
- 1:08:39We were meant to be we. Were meant to be.
- 1:08:41I have been, I've been rooting for this since you told me you
- 1:08:45were starting a podcast. I was like, you're going to do
- 1:08:48it here, right? You manifested it.
- 1:08:50Thank you and I love that for us.
- 1:08:51Me too, I love that for the world.
- 1:08:54So it's gonna be very incestuous.
- 1:08:56I'll come back here more. You'll come on to mine more.
- 1:08:59Totally. Lucky you, yeah.
- 1:09:02It's all gonna bleed together. People will not know where the
- 1:09:04Cameron show starts and did that age well.
- 1:09:06Fraternal twins. Identical.
- 1:09:08Almost. Almost identical.
- 1:09:10It's like, which is why you. Can't talk about how ugly you
- 1:09:12are because that I take that personally.
- 1:09:14Never saying it again. Thank you.
- 1:09:16I'm beautiful in every single way.
- 1:09:20And perfect. And you're writing again.
- 1:09:22And I'm writing again. I'm writing another book.
- 1:09:24So 2 wasn't enough, I guess. No, stay tuned, Stay tuned, stay
- 1:09:28tuned. Get yourself a memoir in space,
- 1:09:31A gay boys memoir. A mural in.
- 1:09:33Space. What did I say?
- 1:09:34A memoir in space. I do that all the time.
- 1:09:36You do. I do that all the time.
- 1:09:38That's why I clocked it, because I was like, is she going to do
- 1:09:40it? Oh my God.
- 1:09:41Really. It actually made me really
- 1:09:42happy. Well, it's called a mural in
- 1:09:45space, so don't. A mural in space.
