- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Bear Smoke Cows Barbecue. It's our side
- 0:02Speaker 1: of our Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. Is we are in
- 0:05Speaker 1: game week for Yukon and Colgate. Two games, both seven
- 0:09Speaker 1: thirty Friday and Saturday nights, will be on the air
- 0:12Speaker 1: Friday night with game one of the series seven to
- 0:14Speaker 1: fifteen on the radio. Adam will be doing some TV duties,
- 0:17Speaker 1: but he'll join me for pre and postgame programming and
- 0:19Speaker 1: I will let you ask the next next question as
- 0:21Speaker 1: she started.
- 0:22Speaker 2: You know, I had one last question about Moe Butler
- 0:24Speaker 2: before we transition back along and what makes her somebody
- 0:30Speaker 2: that the players connect to so much where you are
- 0:32Speaker 2: just able to put it all on her and say, hey,
- 0:34Speaker 2: we trust what you're doing.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Well once She's very competent and knows, you know, the
- 0:45Speaker 3: strength and conditioning business as well as anybody. But the
- 0:48Speaker 3: other thing that I really like about her is she's
- 0:50Speaker 3: willing to adapt. Is you know, as times change, and
- 0:56Speaker 3: I think she has a really good feel for not
- 1:00Speaker 3: everybody can train the same way, and she has a
- 1:03Speaker 3: really good feel for this is our baseline, this is
- 1:07Speaker 3: what everybody has to do. But now this is what
- 1:10Speaker 3: you have to do a little like, you have to
- 1:12Speaker 3: work on speed and quickness and explosiveness, you have to
- 1:17Speaker 3: work on upper body strength, you have to work on
- 1:20Speaker 3: lower body strength. Like she just really knows how to
- 1:23Speaker 3: personally detail each workout, but at the same time having
- 1:27Speaker 3: a baseline that everybody this is our foundation that everybody
- 1:32Speaker 3: has to do. So she just has a great feel
- 1:36Speaker 3: for it. She's been doing it for a long time
- 1:37Speaker 3: and we're fortunate to have her. No question about it.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Anything new in the training process, the toys to play
- 1:43Speaker 1: with this year to help get these young men in shape.
- 1:47Speaker 3: I think you should have Moan and have her discuss that.
- 1:51Speaker 3: I like, I really I'll go in and watch the
- 1:55Speaker 3: workouts occasionally, but I just kind of let her do
- 1:58Speaker 3: her thing.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Do you ever get in the car?
- 2:02Speaker 3: Not often? Not often. I've said, I've got to make
- 2:06Speaker 3: more of a conscious effort to do it because I
- 2:08Speaker 3: know it's good for you, but it's just really not
- 2:11Speaker 3: something I'm adam.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Have you ever been a nice stuff before?
- 2:13Speaker 2: I have once?
- 2:15Speaker 1: That was it once.
- 2:16Speaker 2: That was it in baseball clubhouse and that was one
- 2:19Speaker 2: and done for me.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Mike, what about your defensive group? It was a veteran group,
- 2:23Speaker 1: no more. Harrison Reese home, I forgat. Who's the other
- 2:26Speaker 1: one that's state, Yeah, Jake. I think he's playing minor
- 2:30Speaker 1: league hockey now, right.
- 2:31Speaker 3: They all are?
- 2:32Speaker 1: They all good for good? Ye, good good. But you
- 2:34Speaker 1: have a new group now, I mean Spetsy and Thomas
- 2:37Speaker 1: and you and you do have a couple of other
- 2:39Speaker 1: young guys to help out, but you also have a
- 2:41Speaker 1: couple of transfers. I mean a six seven kid. I
- 2:43Speaker 1: mean it's appropriate. He Swedish. His name is Viking, right, yeah,
- 2:46Speaker 1: And from everything I've heard from him, he's he's been
- 2:49Speaker 1: a nice addition.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Yeah, he's been really nice addition. I think he's certainly
- 2:54Speaker 3: going to help on our penalty killes long and he
- 2:56Speaker 3: can ice pucks, but he's got you know, he skates well,
- 2:59Speaker 3: has good skill set. Kai Jan Verier is a freshman
- 3:03Speaker 3: that joined the group. He's very now he's the opposite
- 3:07Speaker 3: he's he's smaller and stature, but just an effortless skater
- 3:12Speaker 3: and very good with the puck. Unfortunately, Kevin Fitzgerald's a
- 3:16Speaker 3: kid who I think would have battled for playing time.
- 3:18Speaker 3: He blew out his knee last week, so we're gonna
- 3:23Speaker 3: miss him for this year. I think he's gonna season
- 3:25Speaker 3: ending injury. And then we have Jack Pascucci and Owen
- 3:29Speaker 3: Simpson and Bower Swift who are back this year to
- 3:33Speaker 3: give us, you know, quite a bit of depth. And
- 3:36Speaker 3: Trey Scott's another one who has joined our group and
- 3:39Speaker 3: I've been very impressed with him. He had an excellent
- 3:42Speaker 3: practice today.
- 3:43Speaker 2: What about Princeton transfer Nick Carabon.
- 3:45Speaker 3: He's been Yes, he's really solidified. You know, I think
- 3:51Speaker 3: that right side, I mean you always had John Spetz
- 3:54Speaker 3: and Jack Pascucci had some you know, but with Nick
- 3:57Speaker 3: coming in, he's a type of defenceman that you can
- 4:00Speaker 3: play in all situations. He's going to kill penalties, he's
- 4:03Speaker 3: going to play on a power play. You know, he's
- 4:05Speaker 3: going He's a twenty to twenty five minute defenseman.
- 4:08Speaker 2: To night you mention play him in on the right side.
- 4:11Speaker 2: So when you're i mean you're retooling a massive part
- 4:14Speaker 2: of this roster, how much are you keying in on
- 4:16Speaker 2: stick sidedness when you're building this out?
- 4:20Speaker 3: Well, I mean, ideally you'd love to have right left balance.
- 4:23Speaker 3: It doesn't always happen that way, but you know, Andrew
- 4:27Speaker 3: Lucas and Harrison Reese and Jake Flynn were all right shots.
- 4:31Speaker 3: So you know, kai jan Vai is a right shot,
- 4:34Speaker 3: but you know Nick coming in, it was nice to
- 4:37Speaker 3: have a experienced right shot defenseman coming in.
- 4:40Speaker 1: You got a caraban and a caravan on campus. That's right,
- 4:44Speaker 1: That's right. So let's let's hope. Let's hope that Nick
- 4:46Speaker 1: is as productive as Alex's.
- 4:48Speaker 3: That would be that would be great.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Right. Let's talk goltending you bring in three. You have
- 4:53Speaker 1: two freshmen, Callum Tungue out of Moody Port Moody, British Columbia,
- 4:58Speaker 1: and then New Jersey native Thomas he and then the
- 5:01Speaker 1: transfer from the University of New Hampshire, Tomer Music. Tell
- 5:04Speaker 1: us about these young men and what do you expect
- 5:06Speaker 1: from these guys this year.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll start with Tommy Heaney. He came in, grabbed
- 5:12Speaker 3: him late last year because we needed at the time,
- 5:15Speaker 3: we only we had time Muslik and Callum Tongue, you know,
- 5:20Speaker 3: committed to come, but we needed a third goalie and
- 5:23Speaker 3: we grabbed Tommy and I've been very pleased with him.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I think he's a little bit old school. He'll stays
- 5:29Speaker 3: on his feet a little bit longer than most goaltenders
- 5:32Speaker 3: and competes really hard. So I've been you know, impressed
- 5:38Speaker 3: with Tommy Callum was a highly recruited kid out of
- 5:42Speaker 3: British Columbia. You know, he was took his team to
- 5:46Speaker 3: the finals in the playoffs last year. I think he
- 5:48Speaker 3: had a ninety four safe percentage in the playoffs, and
- 5:51Speaker 3: I think that's important. You know, there's a lot of
- 5:53Speaker 3: goalies that may have great numbers during the year, but
- 5:56Speaker 3: the playoffs come and they don't seem to perform. And
- 6:00Speaker 3: Callum's numbers were good, but they were much better in
- 6:03Speaker 3: the playoffs. So that's I think something the telltale sign
- 6:07Speaker 3: of goaltenders that you can count on. And then Tim
- 6:12Speaker 3: Musilik was a national development goaltender and was at New
- 6:16Speaker 3: Hampshire and you know, he got off to a great
- 6:19Speaker 3: start last year. He had wins over bu and Quinnipiac
- 6:23Speaker 3: and then got a knee injury and never really recovered
- 6:26Speaker 3: from that knee injury, and you know, got beat out
- 6:29Speaker 3: at the time, and I think that was probably the
- 6:32Speaker 3: impetus behind him transferring. And we were fortunate enough to
- 6:39Speaker 3: you know, be there and we needed a goaltender and
- 6:43Speaker 3: he knew a little bit about our program. He's from
- 6:45Speaker 3: New Jersey and he knew our goaltending coach Vince Stilletti
- 6:49Speaker 3: a little bit, so it was a probably the right
- 6:52Speaker 3: place at the right time for us. And I think
- 6:55Speaker 3: he's a kid that has a lot of potential to
- 6:57Speaker 3: be a you know, and a goaltender in Hockey East.
- 7:03Speaker 2: How does that conversation go, because when you've got you know,
- 7:06Speaker 2: we talked about Carabin coming in from Princeton. He used
- 7:10Speaker 2: up his four years of eligibility, so there wasn't much
- 7:12Speaker 2: Princeton was going to be able to do to take
- 7:14Speaker 2: him back. He was going to head off in.
- 7:16Speaker 3: The eye, couldn't go back right, Yeah, And.
- 7:18Speaker 2: So you had that conversation with Princeton coach Ben Sire.
- 7:21Speaker 2: That's one conversation. But when it's a guy like Muslic
- 7:24Speaker 2: who's transferring, but within the conference, are you able to
- 7:27Speaker 2: talk to Mike's I did.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Mike worked for me. I think the world of him,
- 7:32Speaker 3: so I certainly wasn't going to go recruit his kid
- 7:34Speaker 3: without talking to him. So, you know, I discussed it
- 7:37Speaker 3: with him. I said, I hear he may be going
- 7:39Speaker 3: in the transfer portal and uh, he goes, I'll find
- 7:42Speaker 3: out for you, you know, and Mike, Mike and Ty
- 7:45Speaker 3: had a conversation, and I think it was a mutual.
- 7:48Speaker 3: You know, Ty was going into his junior year and
- 7:51Speaker 3: he was going to be the backup goaltender going into
- 7:54Speaker 3: the year, and I think he wanted the chance to
- 7:56Speaker 3: be a starting goaltender. And it was as simple as that.
- 7:59Speaker 3: There was nothing else to it. So but yeah, Mike
- 8:02Speaker 3: and I had a conversation beforehand. For sure.
- 8:04Speaker 1: All right, we'll take another break coming the bottom of
- 8:06Speaker 1: the hour. We'll hear from Jake richarda. Then later it
- 8:09Speaker 1: will be Tom macinio. And Tom, by the way, was
- 8:11Speaker 1: wearing his Red Sox hat today as we did the
- 8:13Speaker 1: zoom call. But you better be well, it could be
- 8:15Speaker 1: a brun sat could be a Patriots at.
- 8:18Speaker 3: He is a Massachusetts kid, so he's not a fair
- 8:20Speaker 3: Weather fan. And the baseball season still going well.
- 8:23Speaker 2: The Red Sox are eighty one and eighty one walked in,
- 8:25Speaker 2: by the way.
- 8:25Speaker 1: But before we go to break, quick thought on jok
- 8:27Speaker 1: a Stick, I mean you, you and I both grew up.
- 8:29Speaker 3: It was great. I loved listening to him, Ken Coleman,
- 8:33Speaker 3: Jokestig Leon, they were they were fantastic and it was
- 8:37Speaker 3: a great tribute to him. I thought Yeah, I love
- 8:39Speaker 3: what he said. He had JBJ catch it because he
- 8:42Speaker 3: catches everything. When he threw out the first pitch.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yeah, Dwight Evans wasn't too shabby at that either.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Dwight Evans could probably still throw it from right field
- 8:50Speaker 3: on a on a line to the home plate.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Yeah. I had a chance to meet him this summer.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I'll tell you about that off the off break here.
- 8:56Speaker 1: All right, we'll take a time out. Third segment with
- 8:58Speaker 1: calv coming up as we preview the Huskies the ice
- 9:00Speaker 1: Bus of twenty four, twenty five here on the Yukon
- 9:02Speaker 1: Sports Network from Larfield Play
