- 0:06Speaker 1: so much for tuning in to the Bible Explain podcast
- 0:08Speaker 1: and starting out your week right with the Bible. We're
- 0:11Speaker 1: gonna be talking about Second Chronicles nineteen today and this
- 0:15Speaker 1: prophecy that Jahashaphat gets after going out to war with
- 0:20Speaker 1: King a Hab, and it's a mixed prophecy, so we'll
- 0:24Speaker 1: talk about that in just a second. And as always,
- 0:32Speaker 1: faithful listeners, here is a quick word from one or
- 0:36Speaker 1: two of our sponsors. Alrighty, let's jump right into this episode.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Grab your cup of coffee or your cup of team,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and also your version of the Bible that you prefer.
- 0:46Speaker 1: But as always, I'll be reading out of the web
- 0:49Speaker 1: this morning. This is the entire chapter of Second Chronicles nineteen,
- 0:52Speaker 1: but it's very short, only eleven verses. So let's go
- 0:56Speaker 1: ahead and read this and talk about this prophecy along
- 0:59Speaker 1: with all of the other reforms that Jehoshapat does in Judah. Again,
- 1:04Speaker 1: this is the Second Chronicle is nineteen. Let's give reverence
- 1:06Speaker 1: to God's word together. Jehoshaphat, the King of Judah, returned
- 1:11Speaker 1: to his house in peace to Jerusalem. Jaehu, the son
- 1:14Speaker 1: of Hanani. The seer went out to meet him, and
- 1:17Speaker 1: he said to King Jehoshaphat, should you help the wicked
- 1:20Speaker 1: and love those who hate Yahweh? Because of this wrath
- 1:23Speaker 1: is on you from before Yahweh. Nevertheless, there are good
- 1:26Speaker 1: things found in you, and that you've put away the
- 1:29Speaker 1: asterith out of the land and have set your heart
- 1:31Speaker 1: to seek God. Jehoshaphat lived at Jerusalem, and he went
- 1:35Speaker 1: out again among the people from Beersheba to the hill
- 1:37Speaker 1: country of Ephriam, and brought them back to Yahweh, the
- 1:40Speaker 1: God of their fathers. He set judges in the land
- 1:43Speaker 1: throughout all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city,
- 1:46Speaker 1: and said to the judges, consider what you do, for
- 1:49Speaker 1: you don't judge for man, but for Yahweh, and He
- 1:52Speaker 1: is with you in the judgment. Now, therefore, let the
- 1:54Speaker 1: fear of Yahweh be on you. Take heed and do it,
- 1:58Speaker 1: for there is no iniquity with Yahwehar God, nor respect
- 2:01Speaker 1: of persons, nor taking of bribes. Moreover, in Jerusalem, Jehoshaph
- 2:06Speaker 1: had appointed certain levites, priests and heads of the father's
- 2:09Speaker 1: households of Israel to give judgment for Yahweh and for
- 2:12Speaker 1: controversies they return to Jerusalem. He commanded them, saying, you
- 2:16Speaker 1: shall do this in the fear of Yahweh, faithfully and
- 2:19Speaker 1: with a perfect heart. Whenever any controversies come to you
- 2:22Speaker 1: from your brothers who dwell in their cities between blood
- 2:25Speaker 1: and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and ordinances, you
- 2:29Speaker 1: must warn them that they not be guilty toward Yahweh.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And so wrath come on you and your brothers. Do this,
- 2:36Speaker 1: and you will not be guilty. Behold, Amarya, the chief
- 2:39Speaker 1: Priest is over you in all matters of Yahweh, and Zabadiah,
- 2:42Speaker 1: the son of Ishmael, the ruler of the House of Judah,
- 2:44Speaker 1: in all the king's matters. Also, the levites shall be
- 2:48Speaker 1: officers before you. Deal courageously, and may Yahweh be with
- 2:52Speaker 1: the good. So forgive me. If you hear some wind
- 2:56Speaker 1: in the background, that's because my window is open right now,
- 2:59Speaker 1: because it is a beautiful day outside. It's like almost
- 3:02Speaker 1: sixty degrees, which is amazing for where I live, especially
- 3:07Speaker 1: at this time of the year, and it's just beautiful outside.
- 3:10Speaker 1: So I opened my window because a day like this
- 3:12Speaker 1: does not come very often in my area. So you
- 3:15Speaker 1: might hear some wind, and I apologize for that, but
- 3:18Speaker 1: let's get into the chapter for today. So it says
- 3:21Speaker 1: that Jehosha Fat, the King of Judah, returned to his
- 3:24Speaker 1: house in peace to Jerusalem. So you'll remember what we
- 3:27Speaker 1: talked about last week. Jehosh Fat actually helped King Ahab
- 3:31Speaker 1: up in Israel go to war with the Syrians. But
- 3:34Speaker 1: this was a really, really bad idea because both King
- 3:37Speaker 1: jehosh Fat and also King Ahab were warned by a
- 3:41Speaker 1: prophet of God to not go out to war. The
- 3:44Speaker 1: prophet said, Ahab, if you go to war, you're gonna die.
- 3:48Speaker 1: They're gonna die. That's gonna be it for you. But Ahab,
- 3:51Speaker 1: who was not a Yahweh follower, didn't listen. I don't
- 3:54Speaker 1: know what Jehoshaphat's excuse was, because johosh Fat was obviously
- 3:58Speaker 1: a Yahweh follower, we find out in today's chapter, and
- 4:02Speaker 1: we knew that from before as well. But both the
- 4:05Speaker 1: kings just went to war with Syrians and God had
- 4:10Speaker 1: the prophecy come true obviously, and King Ahab died at
- 4:15Speaker 1: the end of that war. And what's kind of interesting
- 4:17Speaker 1: is he died randomly as well. Ahab actually told jehosh Fat.
- 4:21Speaker 1: He's like, hey, you go ahead and put on your
- 4:23Speaker 1: kingly robes, and I'm going to dress as one of
- 4:26Speaker 1: one of the average soldiers so that nobody tries to
- 4:28Speaker 1: target me and kill me. And Ahab thinks that he's
- 4:31Speaker 1: going to get around this prophecy, that he is going
- 4:34Speaker 1: to just blend in with the crowd and not get
- 4:37Speaker 1: targeted in this battle. And jehosh Fat, for some reason,
- 4:40Speaker 1: just goes along with this absolutely terrible plan. And the
- 4:43Speaker 1: Syrians see jehoshah Fat in his kingly robes in his chariot,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and they start chasing him down to try to kill
- 4:50Speaker 1: him because they think he's King Ahab of Israel. Jehoshaphat
- 4:54Speaker 1: cries out to God, and God moves the Syrians away
- 4:59Speaker 1: from him, protects jehosh Fat, even though jehosh Fat made
- 5:03Speaker 1: such a bad decision to go into this battle in
- 5:05Speaker 1: the first place. And meanwhile, Ahab, who is dressed as
- 5:09Speaker 1: a normal soldier, gets struck randomly with an arrow and
- 5:14Speaker 1: the arrow goes in between the plates of armor to
- 5:19Speaker 1: actually kill him. So the prophecy ended up coming true.
- 5:22Speaker 1: But Jehosha Fat, throughout all of this, returns to his
- 5:26Speaker 1: house in peace and man. That is a miracle from
- 5:29Speaker 1: God that jehosh Fat did not die in that battle.
- 5:32Speaker 1: That shows that God was on jehosh fat side for sure.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But God is not happy with jehosh Fat for what
- 5:38Speaker 1: he did, so he sends a prophet in verse two
- 5:43Speaker 1: named Jehu, the son of Hanani. So we've seen Hanani
- 5:46Speaker 1: the Seer before, back in Second Kings sixteen. He was
- 5:51Speaker 1: the man that went to jehosh Fat's father Asa and
- 5:56Speaker 1: told Asa that he had done something wrong. So let's
- 5:59Speaker 1: go back to Second Chronicle sixteen and read verse seven.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It says at that time Hanani the Seer came to Asa,
- 6:07Speaker 1: King of Judah, and said to him, because you've relied
- 6:09Speaker 1: on the King of Syria and have not relied on
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yahweh or God. Therefore the army of the King of
- 6:14Speaker 1: Syria has escaped out of your hand. And then Hanani
- 6:17Speaker 1: the Seer goes on to you know, prophesy more to
- 6:20Speaker 1: King Asa. But King Asa did not respond well to Hanani.
- 6:24Speaker 1: He actually threw him in prison and started persecuting some
- 6:27Speaker 1: of the other people that were in Judah as well.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So Asa did not respond well to bad prophecy against him.
- 6:35Speaker 1: But this Hanani guy had a son named Jehu, who
- 6:39Speaker 1: was also a prophet himself, and Jehu was mentioned twice
- 6:43Speaker 1: that I know of in scripture. He was mentioned right
- 6:46Speaker 1: here in Second Chronicles nineteen when he gave this prophecy
- 6:50Speaker 1: to Johashapat, and he was also mentioned in First Kings
- 6:53Speaker 1: sixteen one through seven. Let me read First Kings sixteen
- 6:58Speaker 1: seven for you moreover. Yeahs word came by the prophet Jehu,
- 7:01Speaker 1: the son of Hanani, against Basha and against his house,
- 7:05Speaker 1: both because of all the evil that he did and
- 7:07Speaker 1: y always cite to provoke him to anger with the
- 7:10Speaker 1: work of his hands in being like the house of Jerebo,
- 7:13Speaker 1: and because he struck him. So Jehu was one of
- 7:16Speaker 1: the few prophets we see who is actually a prophet
- 7:19Speaker 1: to both the kings of Israel and also the kings
- 7:21Speaker 1: of Judah. Interestingly enough, a lot of times when we
- 7:24Speaker 1: see prophets around this time period, they stick with their
- 7:29Speaker 1: own kings. But Jayhu moved around to both Israel and
- 7:33Speaker 1: Judah to give these prophecies to these kings. So he
- 7:36Speaker 1: gives a prophecy in our passage for today to Johashafat.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Because God is not happy with Jehoshafat. And by the way,
- 7:43Speaker 1: I do not know how to pronounce Jehashafat's name. I
- 7:46Speaker 1: don't know. Sometimes I say Jehashafat, sometimes I say jehoshah Fat.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I was looking at the Hebrew and it's like it's
- 7:53Speaker 1: something more like Yeha Sapat or something yahas say pet.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I don't know how to pronounce his name, so please
- 8:00Speaker 1: forgive me. My pronunciation of his name is going to
- 8:03Speaker 1: constantly change. I just know that about myself. So anyway,
- 8:07Speaker 1: Jayhu goes to King josh Fat and he says, should
- 8:11Speaker 1: you help the wicked and love those who hate Yahweh?
- 8:15Speaker 1: Because of this, wrath is on you from before Yahweh.
- 8:18Speaker 1: In other words, God is angry at you, joosh Fat,
- 8:21Speaker 1: for what you've done. He is angry that you sided
- 8:24Speaker 1: with that wicked king Ahab up north in Israel. He
- 8:28Speaker 1: is angry with you because why are you helping the wicked?
- 8:33Speaker 1: Why are you loving those who hate Yahweh? And that's
- 8:38Speaker 1: another thing. Jehosh Fat actually went very far in his
- 8:42Speaker 1: covenant with King Ahab. He actually married his son to
- 8:46Speaker 1: King Ahab's daughter Ahab and Jezebel's daughter. And we're gonna
- 8:51Speaker 1: find out that jehosh Fat's son ended up being a
- 8:53Speaker 1: really really bad guy, really bad guy because of his
- 8:57Speaker 1: ties to Israel and that wicked family. So I'm sure
- 9:01Speaker 1: God is not just talking about this whole kerfuffle that
- 9:03Speaker 1: happened with Ahab and jehosh Fat with the Syrians. He's
- 9:07Speaker 1: probably also talking about the marriage covenant between jehosh Fat's
- 9:10Speaker 1: son and Ahab and Jezebel's daughter. Just a really bad
- 9:15Speaker 1: situation all around. Now, I should mention here the word
- 9:18Speaker 1: love where it says should you help the wicked and
- 9:21Speaker 1: love those who hate yahweh. The word love, if you
- 9:23Speaker 1: look at it in the Hebrew, doesn't necessarily mean like
- 9:27Speaker 1: a familial type of love, or like a love between
- 9:31Speaker 1: a husband and wife. This particular word for love actually
- 9:36Speaker 1: means more of a covenant that you're making with somebody,
- 9:39Speaker 1: or a bond that you have with someone. It could
- 9:42Speaker 1: also relate to a vow that you make with someone.
- 9:46Speaker 1: And interestingly enough, this same Hebrew word for love that
- 9:49Speaker 1: we see right here in Second Chronicles nineteen is also
- 9:53Speaker 1: the same word used for the love between Jonathan and David,
- 9:58Speaker 1: and a lot of people nowadays like to say that
- 10:00Speaker 1: Jonathan and David had a homosexual relationship because it says
- 10:03Speaker 1: in scripture that these two men loved each other. And
- 10:07Speaker 1: not to go off on that for too long, but
- 10:09Speaker 1: if you read Second Samuel chapter one, there's an interesting
- 10:12Speaker 1: verse that David says. It says the love he had
- 10:16Speaker 1: between Jonathan actually surpassed the love of women, and so
- 10:21Speaker 1: many people like to take that and be like, oh,
- 10:24Speaker 1: you know, that definitely means that David had like a
- 10:28Speaker 1: deep crush on Jonathan. But again, this Hebrew word for
- 10:32Speaker 1: love is used in that context. So what David was
- 10:36Speaker 1: saying is not that he had sexual feelings for Jonathan
- 10:39Speaker 1: above the feelings he had for other women. He was
- 10:42Speaker 1: saying that he had a vow with Jonathan that surpassed
- 10:46Speaker 1: the vows that he had with any women. And that
- 10:49Speaker 1: really checks out actually, because David broke his marriage vows
- 10:53Speaker 1: all the time. He didn't care about his marriage vows,
- 10:55Speaker 1: so of course he was going to think that this
- 10:57Speaker 1: like brotherly bond, this covenant that he had with Jonathan
- 11:01Speaker 1: was a better vow than the ones he made with
- 11:04Speaker 1: his own wives, because he broke those ones all the time.
- 11:08Speaker 1: But he did not break the vow between Jonathan and himself.
- 11:12Speaker 1: They had a covenant together, they made a promise with
- 11:16Speaker 1: each other. And the Hebrew word for love used in
- 11:19Speaker 1: that situation is talking more about a covenant or a
- 11:24Speaker 1: vow rather than a sexual kind of love. And that's
- 11:28Speaker 1: the same thing here for Second Chronicles nineteen, where King
- 11:32Speaker 1: jehosh Fat made this vow with King Ahab. And that's
- 11:38Speaker 1: why God says here, should you help the wicked and
- 11:41Speaker 1: love those who hate Yahweh? So, in other words, should
- 11:44Speaker 1: you make a vow with someone who hates Yahweh? Why
- 11:49Speaker 1: would you do that? Why would you do that? Is
- 11:51Speaker 1: what God is asking because of this wrath is on
- 11:54Speaker 1: you from before Yahweh. So God is angry at Jehosha
- 11:59Speaker 1: Fat for what he did. However, God also gives some
- 12:03Speaker 1: encouragement to jehosh Fat at the exact same time. He
- 12:06Speaker 1: tells them, you know what, I'm angry at you, but
- 12:09Speaker 1: there are good things found in you. You've put away
- 12:13Speaker 1: the asterith out of the land, and you have set
- 12:16Speaker 1: your heart to seek God. Jayhu made some mistakes, He
- 12:20Speaker 1: made some pretty bad mistakes actually with helping King Ahab.
- 12:24Speaker 1: But because jehoshah Fat truly did have a heart after God,
- 12:30Speaker 1: God commended jehosh Fat at the same time as kind
- 12:33Speaker 1: of yelling at him, even punishing him. Now, we don't
- 12:36Speaker 1: know exactly what punishment jehosha Fat got for this. It
- 12:41Speaker 1: could be that God never punished jehosh Fat while he
- 12:44Speaker 1: was here on earth. Maybe that punishment was reserved for
- 12:48Speaker 1: meeting God face to face. I don't know, Or maybe
- 12:51Speaker 1: scripture just didn't say the punishment that jehosh Fat got.
- 12:56Speaker 1: So we don't know exactly how God punished jehosh Fat,
- 12:59Speaker 1: but it does say that he was angry with him.
- 13:03Speaker 1: But I do think that jehosh Fat, at least for
- 13:05Speaker 1: the time being, kind of got the message. He did
- 13:08Speaker 1: not respond like his father Asa did when Asa received
- 13:12Speaker 1: a negative prophecy from Hanani the Seer. You know, Asa
- 13:16Speaker 1: flew off the handle and put Hanani in prison and
- 13:19Speaker 1: persecuted a bunch of people. But jehosh Fat, it says,
- 13:22Speaker 1: after he got this, just lived at Jerusalem, and that
- 13:26Speaker 1: kind of implies that he didn't go up to Israel again,
- 13:30Speaker 1: like maybe he learned his lesson there that he was
- 13:32Speaker 1: not going to travel to see the next king of Israel,
- 13:36Speaker 1: because don't forget that, you know, Ahab had just died,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and they had had a agreement with each other, a
- 13:43Speaker 1: covenant with each other. So it would have made sense
- 13:46Speaker 1: politically for jehosh Fat to go back up to Israel
- 13:50Speaker 1: and greet the next king, which obviously would have been
- 13:54Speaker 1: I believe it was Azaria, which was Ahab's son. It
- 13:58Speaker 1: would have made sense politically, But it kind of sounds
- 14:01Speaker 1: like jehosh Fat did not do that. He just stayed
- 14:03Speaker 1: in Judah where he was supposed to be, instead of
- 14:06Speaker 1: traveling up to Israel again. Now all that being said,
- 14:11Speaker 1: I don't know if jehosh Fat fully learned his lesson,
- 14:14Speaker 1: as we're gonna find out soon, but at least for
- 14:17Speaker 1: the time being, it seems like he kind of did.
- 14:20Speaker 1: And so in verse four he went out again among
- 14:23Speaker 1: the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephriam
- 14:26Speaker 1: and brought them back to Yahweh, the God of their fathers.
- 14:31Speaker 1: So after all this takes place, jehash Fat figures out
- 14:34Speaker 1: what he's going to do in Judah to get the
- 14:37Speaker 1: people back on track with Yahweh. It says he went
- 14:42Speaker 1: out again among the people of Judah, from Beersheba to
- 14:45Speaker 1: the hill country of Ephraim, and it says he brought
- 14:47Speaker 1: them back to Yahweh, the God of their fathers. So
- 14:50Speaker 1: I don't know if this was more religious reform that
- 14:52Speaker 1: he did. We do know that he got rid of
- 14:55Speaker 1: the Ashtrara cult, and he also removed the sex cult
- 14:59Speaker 1: and the homosexual prostitutes that were in Judah as well.
- 15:03Speaker 1: He got rid of all of that stuff, and I
- 15:06Speaker 1: think that's why God did end up commending him at
- 15:08Speaker 1: the same time as punishing him, because Jehoshavad did do
- 15:13Speaker 1: some good things spiritually for Judah, and it sounds like
- 15:16Speaker 1: he's continuing to do that. It says in verse five
- 15:19Speaker 1: that he set judges in the land throughout all the
- 15:21Speaker 1: fortified cities of Judah, city by city, and said to
- 15:25Speaker 1: the judges, consider what you do, for you don't judge
- 15:27Speaker 1: for man, but for Yahweh, and He is with you
- 15:30Speaker 1: in the judgment. Now, therefore, let the fear of Yahweh
- 15:33Speaker 1: be on you. Take heed and do it, for there
- 15:35Speaker 1: is no iniquity with Yahweh are God, nor respect of persons,
- 15:39Speaker 1: nor taking of bribes. So this is definitely some sort
- 15:42Speaker 1: of judicial reform that Jehoshaphat does for Judah. He tries
- 15:48Speaker 1: to get judges that are good, that aren't going to
- 15:50Speaker 1: take bribes. He says, that aren't going to take sides
- 15:54Speaker 1: or show favoritism in the court. Instead, they are going
- 15:58Speaker 1: to follow Yahweh and they are going to not respect persons,
- 16:03Speaker 1: in other words, show favoritism or take bribes and corrupt justice.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And this could be part of the reason why jehosh
- 16:11Speaker 1: Fat went in person to all of these different cities
- 16:14Speaker 1: to check out what the judicial system looked like and
- 16:18Speaker 1: to appoint new judges and fire old judges who are
- 16:22Speaker 1: corrupting justice. And the new judges that Jehoshaphat puts in place,
- 16:27Speaker 1: he tells them to follow God. He says, consider what
- 16:31Speaker 1: you do for you don't judge for man, but for Yahweh,
- 16:34Speaker 1: and He is with you in the judgment. So he
- 16:37Speaker 1: reminds them, He's like, look, your job is not to
- 16:40Speaker 1: judge for other people for other people's approval. Your job
- 16:45Speaker 1: is to judge for God's approval. That's it. So this
- 16:49Speaker 1: is all great stuff. And then in verse eight it
- 16:51Speaker 1: says moreover, in Jerusalem, Jehoshapad appointed certain levites, priests and
- 16:56Speaker 1: heads of the father's households of Israel to give judgment
- 16:58Speaker 1: for Yahweh and or controversies. So I would guess this
- 17:02Speaker 1: is kind of like an appeals court. So some political stuff,
- 17:05Speaker 1: some religious stuff, some just you know, innocuous stuff where
- 17:10Speaker 1: people would have complaints with each other and try to
- 17:12Speaker 1: sue each other. I guess they could go to Jerusalem
- 17:15Speaker 1: and have their problem figured out. I suppose with one
- 17:19Speaker 1: of these levites that was appointed by the king. And
- 17:22Speaker 1: in verse Ninence says he commanded them, saying, you shall
- 17:25Speaker 1: do this in the fear of Yahweh, faithfully and with
- 17:28Speaker 1: a perfect heart. So again, the phrase perfect heart does
- 17:34Speaker 1: not mean sinless perfection. It means completely following Yahweh, not
- 17:41Speaker 1: worshiping any other gods, not being influenced by any other
- 17:45Speaker 1: cultures or gods, but only being influenced by Yahweh himself.
- 17:49Speaker 1: And what the scriptures have to say. And jehasha Fat
- 17:53Speaker 1: continues in verse ten, whenever any controversy comes to you
- 17:57Speaker 1: from your brothers who dwell in their cities between blooded blood,
- 18:00Speaker 1: between law and commandment, statutes and ordinances, you must warn
- 18:04Speaker 1: them that they not be guilty toward Yahweh. And so
- 18:07Speaker 1: wrath come on you and your brothers do this and
- 18:10Speaker 1: you will not be guilty. So again, like the judges,
- 18:13Speaker 1: he commands these guys to be fully in line with Yahweh,
- 18:18Speaker 1: that they are not judging for the sake of man,
- 18:22Speaker 1: but they are judging for the sake of God. Then
- 18:26Speaker 1: he says, behold, Amara, the chief priest is over you
- 18:29Speaker 1: in all matters of Yahweh, and Zabadiah, the son of Ishmael,
- 18:33Speaker 1: the ruler of the House of Judah, in all the
- 18:36Speaker 1: king's matters. So yes, there is two types of court,
- 18:39Speaker 1: it sounds like in Jerusalem, one specifically for matters relating
- 18:44Speaker 1: to Yahweh and another one relating directly to matters of
- 18:48Speaker 1: the king. Also, the levites shall be officers before you
- 18:52Speaker 1: deal courageously, and may Yahweh be with the good. So overall,
- 18:57Speaker 1: you know, josh Fat was a human being, the same
- 18:59Speaker 1: as all of us. He sinned, he did something wrong,
- 19:04Speaker 1: but he did try to get Judah to follow God
- 19:08Speaker 1: once again in every single capacity, not just politically, but
- 19:12Speaker 1: also religiously as well. And he was trying to appoint
- 19:16Speaker 1: people that actually truly loved Yahweh, that wasn't worshiping any
- 19:20Speaker 1: other idol or being influenced by any other idols, but
- 19:24Speaker 1: worshiping God alone and ruling the people, judging the people
- 19:30Speaker 1: in a way that was God honoring. So josh Fat
- 19:33Speaker 1: did his best, for sure, and because of that, his
- 19:36Speaker 1: reign was overall blessed by God. And you can see
- 19:40Speaker 1: now why even though God is angry at jehosh Fat,
- 19:44Speaker 1: he also commends him for the good things that he did.
- 19:50Speaker 1: There's one last thing I'd like to say about verse
- 19:52Speaker 1: three before I end the episode. But before I do,
- 19:55Speaker 1: here is a quick word from a sponsor. All right,
- 20:01Speaker 1: the last thing I'd like to say in verse two,
- 20:04Speaker 1: where Jahu the prophet goes to Jehoshaphat and he says,
- 20:07Speaker 1: should you help the waket in love those who hate Yahweh?
- 20:10Speaker 1: That makes it pretty clear that even though a vow
- 20:14Speaker 1: was made between Jehoshaphat and Ahab, that vow firstly should
- 20:20Speaker 1: never have been made, and also secondly, it should have
- 20:22Speaker 1: been broken. There are times in scripture where it is
- 20:26Speaker 1: actually better to break a vow than follow through with it.
- 20:30Speaker 1: We've seen this on a handful of occasions so far,
- 20:34Speaker 1: the first and most famous one being when that one
- 20:38Speaker 1: judge of Israel i forget his name, vowed to sacrifice
- 20:41Speaker 1: whatever came out of his house if God helped him,
- 20:44Speaker 1: and then the first thing that came out of his
- 20:46Speaker 1: house ended up being his daughter, and so he sacrificed
- 20:49Speaker 1: his daughter to Yahweh. Obviously a very stupid vow that
- 20:53Speaker 1: should have been broken, because if you are sinning in
- 20:57Speaker 1: order to keep a vow with God, that's not good.
- 21:01Speaker 1: That's not good, and that's the same thing here in
- 21:04Speaker 1: Second Chronicles nineteen, Jehosha Fat was sinning by keeping this
- 21:08Speaker 1: vow with King Ahab because God directly warned both jehosh
- 21:14Speaker 1: Fat and also Ahab to not go to battle. It
- 21:18Speaker 1: was a sin for jehosh Fat to go to battle,
- 21:20Speaker 1: even if he promised Ahab, yes, I will do this
- 21:23Speaker 1: with you before he heard that prophecy, he should have
- 21:26Speaker 1: broken that vow because God does not want us to sin.
- 21:29Speaker 1: We don't keep vows that cause us or other people
- 21:33Speaker 1: to sin. Now, granted, it's better to not make the
- 21:35Speaker 1: vow in the first place if you can't keep it,
- 21:38Speaker 1: but in Jehoshpat's case, he definitely should have broken that
- 21:41Speaker 1: vow that he had with King Ahab because God essentially
- 21:45Speaker 1: says that why would you help the wicked and love
- 21:48Speaker 1: those who hate yahweh. So, faithful listeners, I hope you
- 21:51Speaker 1: enjoyed today's episode and learn something from it, and if

- 22:12Speaker 1: on the podcast actually, and I have not done that
- 22:13Speaker 1: in a while. I have to do that again, So
- 22:16Speaker 1: write those reviews and I will read one on the
