- 0:24Here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:28Amen. Open your Bibles to Exodus
- 0:31chapter 28. We covered it last time, but I
- 0:35want to do go back and add a few things that time did not allow
- 0:40us. Exodus chapter 28 a kind of real
- 0:43big overview, but I've entitled our Bible study.
- 0:47You must worship God correctly. You must worship God correctly.
- 0:54And we see this as God is establishing the priesthood in
- 0:58Exodus 28. Studying through the book of
- 1:02Exodus, you know, it's a foundational book to the
- 1:05underlying faith of the Old Testament believers.
- 1:08Often they would go back all throughout the Old Testament.
- 1:12You'll find them looking back to this time in the history of
- 1:16Israel, the deliverance of the Red Sea, the God's powerful
- 1:20rescue out of Egypt, His faithfulness, His ability to not
- 1:26only promise but also keep His promises.
- 1:29This moment of being set free completely impacted the nations
- 1:35and the believers going forward. And you find it being referenced
- 1:39many times. God gave them freedom.
- 1:42He met them personally. He showed them miracles, He
- 1:47hears their prayers, He helps them, He delivers them, He leads
- 1:51them, He loves them. And if God could do that then,
- 1:55then God could do that. Now, in each of the references,
- 2:00they're looking back and you know, I know what God has done
- 2:02in the past and I know that God can do it now in the New
- 2:07Testament. When the writers in the New
- 2:10Testament look back, there are references to the deliverance
- 2:14out of Egypt for sure. But when the New Testament
- 2:17writers look back, they look back to the cross, to the empty
- 2:20tomb, to that moment when the fulfillment of the promises of
- 2:25God came to pass and there was a true freedom given to each one
- 2:29that placed their faith in Jesus.
- 2:32When the New Testament writers wanted to give an example of the
- 2:35power of God, they went to the empty tomb because true freedom
- 2:39from sin and death comes through Jesus.
- 2:43And Exodus is such a powerful book going back to our studies
- 2:49far back in the past. You remember Amram and Jochebed.
- 2:54Maybe you've forgotten them, but this is that Hebrew couple that
- 2:58God used. And God chose to bring forth a
- 3:03son, and after a miraculous rescue in the river, he becomes
- 3:07the deliverer of the children of Israel.
- 3:10Of course, he becomes the deliverer of the children of
- 3:13Israel. After years and years and years
- 3:17and years of what we would call today discipleship, you could
- 3:22step back and say, OK, discipleship may not have been
- 3:25the word used in the Old Testament.
- 3:27Then you could use the word training.
- 3:29He needed to be trained. He started with this great
- 3:32desire to deliver. He felt it incensed in, but
- 3:36there was still yet preparation that was needed in his life.
- 3:40And the big portion, 1/3 of his life was spent in obscurity in
- 3:46the backside of the desert as he embraced this time of just him
- 3:51and God and faithfulness. And that may be exactly where
- 3:55God has you, just you and God and faithfulness.
- 4:01God is going to be faithful in those seasons.
- 4:04The question is says how much faithfulness is God going to
- 4:06draw out of you in the circumstance, in the difficulty
- 4:11in the trial, in the situation you don't like or you don't
- 4:15want. And after that miraculous rescue
- 4:18from the river, God uses Moses and standing before Pharaoh,
- 4:24even though they began, he didn't want to do that.
- 4:27He would rather do anything but go stand before Pharaoh.
- 4:31But after wrestling with God, God wins and he stands and he
- 4:35declares the word of God to Pharaoh, watching the plagues
- 4:39come upon Egypt. Finally, he is not only asked to
- 4:43leave, he's told to leave. He gets up to the Red Sea.
- 4:47God parts the Red Sea. They walk as if on dry ground.
- 4:50We learn about the cloud by day, the pillar of fire, fire by
- 4:54night. God's going to lead them and
- 4:56guide them into a new life of faith.
- 4:59Same people, different life. It's so representative of the
- 5:05life of faith in Christ. Same person, different life.
- 5:09I mean, same upbringing, same family, same body, same hair,
- 5:13same name, all of the things, so many that are same.
- 5:16But then in Christ you're a new creation and old things have
- 5:20passed away. Behold, all things have become
- 5:22new and that sometimes that stumbles you because you still
- 5:25dealing with things in the same physical body.
- 5:28You have the same habits, the same thought patterns that God
- 5:32is renewing our minds and taking us from glory to glory and
- 5:35strength to strength, but we're learning the same thing.
- 5:38The children of Israel are learning.
- 5:40Look, observe, obey and follow. God wants to be the center.
- 5:48Jesus would put it this way. Seek ye first the Kingdom of
- 5:52God. He must be the center.
- 5:54If Jesus says if you want to follow me, then deny yourself.
- 5:59Some of you are still stuck there.
- 6:02You don't need to hear anything else.
- 6:04You simply have chosen not to deny yourself.
- 6:08You've taken the name of Christian you.
- 6:10You may even be born again, but to follow Christ or what we
- 6:14might describe as there's a lot of born again believers today
- 6:17that live as unbelievers and they don't have a real walk with
- 6:20the Lord, a real ongoing relationship.
- 6:23And in order to step into that ongoing relationship, you must
- 6:27deny yourself. It is not your way anymore.
- 6:31It's not your deal. It is, it's not.
- 6:35You know, I was thinking recently, I was just praying.
- 6:38I was praying for some situations where I'm just like,
- 6:41why? Why can't people just follow the
- 6:43Lord? That was my thought to the Lord.
- 6:46That was my prayer. Why can't they just obey?
- 6:48Why does it have to be so much drama?
- 6:51I don't understand it. Why do they have to just if
- 6:54they're going to end up going anyway, why do they go the hard
- 6:57way? Why are they resisting?
- 7:01Why? Well, I know why.
- 7:05It's the flesh, and there's a little bit of it in all of us.
- 7:10And Exodus is reminding us of the delivering power of God.
- 7:15You don't need a deliverance ministry.
- 7:16You have a deliverer, Jesus Christ, that that phrase keeps
- 7:20coming up over and over. Got a call on the radio today.
- 7:22Deliverance. No, you don't need a deliverance
- 7:24minister. You don't need some special
- 7:26prayer. You read in the book.
- 7:27You have Jesus deny yourself. No, no, no, it's got to be easy.
- 7:32No, I need somebody to pray a special prayer.
- 7:34I need to go to a special meeting.
- 7:35I got no deny yourself. Take up your your cross and
- 7:41follow him. You're delivered live that way.
- 7:45You're delivered from sin and death.
- 7:48It's amazing God has sent his Son Jesus Christ to shed his
- 7:53blood for you, but you think you don't have power over that sin?
- 7:57You really believe the blood of Jesus Christ stopped short of
- 8:00the family you were born into, of the past that you lived, of
- 8:05the habits you've developed? Do you think the blood of Jesus
- 8:08Christ covers all, but that it's your belief?
- 8:13You need to change your thinking.
- 8:16Not only do you need to change your beliefs, but you also need
- 8:18to behave. Begin to behave like you
- 8:21believe. And you have a deliverer.
- 8:24We've been in this section of Exodus now where God is defining
- 8:28for the last few studies his relationship with the nation.
- 8:33They are no longer slaves under taskmasters.
- 8:37They have now become voluntary bond slaves of a good and
- 8:42gracious God. And he wants to define the
- 8:45relationship and he is how they'll relate to him, how
- 8:50they're to worship him. You remember, he says I'm going
- 8:53to come and dwell with you. I'm going to meet you.
- 8:56And he gave instructions for this tent structure, the
- 9:00Tabernacle. This is where I'm going to meet
- 9:03with you, he says on the mercy seat on top of the Ark of the
- 9:07Testimony, the Ark of the Covenant, the Tabernacles
- 9:11construction. This temporary tent was given to
- 9:14Moses and then to the people. I believe it was downloaded into
- 9:18Moses mine up on Mount Sinai. You could see it all.
- 9:21And then it was given to him detail piece by piece, how what
- 9:24he was shown is going to be built by men.
- 9:27It's very similar to the visions that God will give leaders and
- 9:31pastors and and dads and moms for their homes and their
- 9:34families. God downloads this vision, but
- 9:36you don't know how it's going to come to pass.
- 9:38You don't know how it's going to happen.
- 9:40It's beyond your ability to comprehend.
- 9:42But you see it and you're excited and you come up.
- 9:45And this is what I think the Lord's doing.
- 9:46And the first question from some is, well, how?
- 9:49You know, like, I don't know, but we're going to discover it
- 9:52together. And God gave it to him detail,
- 9:55piece by piece. Why?
- 9:56Because we've learned this is all by way of review.
- 9:58We've learned that God is in the details.
- 10:02God loves things in the New Testament, we learned he loves
- 10:05things done decently and in order.
- 10:10He loves and very much into details.
- 10:13And a worshipping people must have a place to meet with God.
- 10:17And that place is this 10th of meaning or the Tabernacle.
- 10:21And what's most inside that lid, what's most important inside
- 10:24that little section behind the veil, that little spot where the
- 10:29arc of the testimony sits with the golden mercy seat lid where
- 10:33the priest would go in and offer the blood.
- 10:37Now, last time we briefly covered the priest, we overview,
- 10:40more of an overview of the priest.
- 10:43And if you're taking notes, I want to back up a little bit.
- 10:45I want to give you some insight not only of the priest, but also
- 10:48of your own life. And I want to remind us today as
- 10:52a church that we need to worship God the correct way.
- 10:57And you might ask, well, what's the correct way God prescribes
- 11:01how he's to be worshipped? And we've already seen some of
- 11:04the prescriptions in Exodus 20 and the 10 commandments.
- 11:08He goes, here's the guard rails. These are the things I want you
- 11:11to watch in your life in the new covenant.
- 11:14I'm going to empower you so that when you abide in me, you,
- 11:18you'll pass those tests freely because your eyes are on me.
- 11:22And I want you to see five important truths about the
- 11:25priests. And then we're going to end our
- 11:28time today in a section of the Bible where we have a couple of
- 11:32priests that worship God incorrectly.
- 11:37And it'll emphasize how important it is #1 if you're
- 11:40taking notes, when we look at the priesthood or these men that
- 11:44were used and appointed to lead the children of Israel in
- 11:49worship #1 the priests were appointed by God.
- 11:53Remember in verse 1 of chapter 28 it says, now take Aaron, your
- 11:58brother and his sons with him from among the children of
- 12:01Israel, that he may minister to me as priest.
- 12:06Aaron and Aaron's sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eliezer, and Ifamar,
- 12:14these are appointed by God. This is not something you could
- 12:19take upon yourself. God names them and He dictates
- 12:23what family they're to come from, appointed by God.
- 12:28This role of priest, nobody could take it upon themselves.
- 12:33You couldn't wake up 1 morning and say, I think I want to be a
- 12:36priest. This is something that God did
- 12:39and that God prescribed. He's the one that appoints them.
- 12:43Later, Jesus would emphasize this calling when he contrasted
- 12:48the true shepherd with a hireling.
- 12:51Hold your places here. Turn over to John chapter 10
- 12:54with me. John chapter 10.
- 12:58This leadership in in the God, in God's church.
- 13:01Just like the priest of the Old Testament leadership in God's
- 13:05church, You can't take it upon yourself.
- 13:07Now I have met a lot of men and women that have tried to take it
- 13:11upon themselves, but that's not a true leader.
- 13:15Like the priests of old, God will appoint and ordain the men
- 13:20that He wants to lead His church.
- 13:22Even today, men and women, as women have a variety of
- 13:25different roles of leadership within the church.
- 13:28Notice what Jesus says here. There's a great contrast between
- 13:31the men that God has appointed and the men that have appointed
- 13:35themselves. Notice with me, verse 11, it's
- 13:39the contrast between the shepherd and the hireling.
- 13:42Verse 11 Jesus says I am the Good Shepherd, and the Good
- 13:47Shepherd gives his life for the sheep, but he who is a hireling
- 13:54and not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the
- 13:59wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf catches
- 14:04the sheep and scatters them. The hireling verse 13 flees
- 14:10because he's a hireling and does not care about the sheep there.
- 14:16There's an insight here about those men that take ministry
- 14:20upon themselves, and that is they don't care about the sheep,
- 14:25they care about themselves. And unfortunately now over many,
- 14:29many years, I've seen this time and time again a greater care
- 14:35for self than for the flock of God, so that the first time
- 14:41difficulty comes or the first time challenges come, there is
- 14:45that test upon a man's heart, that test upon a woman's heart.
- 14:49And you can tell whether they have a true shepherd or shepherd
- 14:52his heart by whether they stick around or not.
- 14:55That's what he says. Soon as the wolf comes, the
- 14:58hirelings out of here. What about the sheep?
- 15:01I don't know about the sheep. I just know about myself and I'm
- 15:05out of here. But the shepherd steadies on
- 15:08Jesus gives us the greatest example of the shepherd, the
- 15:12Good Shepherd that gives, not takes, gives his life, not
- 15:17exposes the life of the flock. And this is a reason why so many
- 15:23men strive and complain about the ministry.
- 15:28They complain about how hard it is and complain about how
- 15:30difficult it is and and they have forgotten the Good Shepherd
- 15:35because the Good Shepherd gives. The Good Shepherd doesn't
- 15:38complain. The Good Shepherd gives and dies
- 15:42for the sake of the flock and doesn't run away.
- 15:47I've seen too many take ministry on without a clear calling from
- 15:50the Lord. Maybe it's the prestige.
- 15:53I mean, I could go through a list that might be a little
- 15:55pamphlet book I can write one day of all the things I've seen
- 15:58over the years through this little church and my years in
- 16:02our home church, much larger than this.
- 16:04Maybe it's the prestige, maybe it's the position, maybe it's
- 16:08the power that draws them. It's certainly pride and taking
- 16:12upon them, wanting to take advantage of the flock for their
- 16:16own purposes. But when they find that the
- 16:19ministry's too much for them, often they quit, walk away, find
- 16:24something else to do. And a hireling, soon a hireling
- 16:28soon finds out that there's no prestige.
- 16:32And being a shepherd, it's a stinky business.
- 16:36It's a challenging business where sometimes a shepherd's
- 16:39prayer is Why so much drama, Lord?
- 16:43Well, that's what a shepherd's for, to help dissipate the drama
- 16:46and get people's eyes back on the Lord.
- 16:48A hireling, they soon find out there's not a lot to the
- 16:52position because to whom much is given, according to God, much is
- 16:57required. It's not the other way around.
- 16:59It's not leadership in in the church is not like the world.
- 17:04I'm sure that you have worked in environments before where
- 17:08everyone's trying to climb the corporate ladder.
- 17:11More money, less responsibility. That's not the way of the
- 17:14church. The way of the church is the way
- 17:17up is down. And the greater the servant, the
- 17:21greater the leader, and the greater the leadership, the
- 17:25greater the servanthood. It's not really prestigious and
- 17:29it's not really the position or as powerful as some might think,
- 17:34but rather we've taken the position of the doulos, the bond
- 17:38slave, the bond servant willingly, not against our will,
- 17:43not like Egypt, but willingly chosen to take the place of a
- 17:48servant before the war. And the ministry has a tendency
- 17:52for a man in the flesh to wear them down and wear them out if
- 17:56they're not called. But to the called comes this
- 17:59encouragement. You can jot it down to those
- 18:01that just know you're supposed to be like, you're just called
- 18:03to teach the kiddos the Sunday school.
- 18:05But then you're there that week where there's 110 kids in a room
- 18:09that fits 5:00 and you're like, what is going on?
- 18:13Here's the word of the Lord you ready because it happens.
- 18:15There are seasons where it's just harder than the other times
- 18:17and more challenging and this is what Bible we'll get to this
- 18:20later in our weekend study. But in Galatians chapter 6,
- 18:23verse 9, it says, and let us not grow weary in well doing, but in
- 18:31due season we shall reap if we don't lose harp.
- 18:36And then we often quote that part of the verse, but don't
- 18:39quote the next one. In verse 10.
- 18:42It says, therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to
- 18:47all, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
- 18:52And there's that beautiful that that beautiful opportunity and
- 18:57gift from God that when things get tough, he says, do good.
- 19:02When things get hard, do good. Look for the opportunities.
- 19:06That's how you don't grow weary, you just you don't get buried
- 19:10under the weight of difficulty, only buried on the way to no,
- 19:12you look for opportunities, do good, be good.
- 19:16Let the Spirit of God use you. You always have those problems.
- 19:18The problems will be with us always, but the opportunities to
- 19:22do good are always with us as well.
- 19:25And as you step in to these opportunities by faith, the Lord
- 19:29will bless you and encourage you and revive you.
- 19:32I want to spend a little bit of time on there because that's how
- 19:34chapter 28 opens. Your ministry is to the Lord.
- 19:38It's not to take advantage of the flock.
- 19:41It's not to be buried under the way.
- 19:43God did not call you to be buried under the weight of
- 19:47ministry. Can I get an Amen for that?
- 19:49He did not call you to be buried under the weight of ministry.
- 19:51But if you're not called, you will be buried, but rather God
- 19:56will give you the strength to accomplish everything that He
- 19:59wants to do through your life. Everything.
- 20:02You will have enough time, you'll have enough resources,
- 20:05you will have enough strength. You'll have enough wisdom, and I
- 20:09wanted to spend a few moments on that.
- 20:11Very important #1 priests were appointed by God #2 the priests
- 20:15were given special clothing. There was a uniqueness about
- 20:20them. Now, I don't believe this one
- 20:21translates today where pastors have to wear special clothing.
- 20:25They should just be clothed. That's very important.
- 20:27Just put some clothes on. There's not like we're not
- 20:31judging on the outward in terms of what a person wears or
- 20:34doesn't wear, but but you know, you don't want to be in a place
- 20:37where you're stumbling, drawing attention to yourself, men or
- 20:40women. We want to be in a place where
- 20:42where we're transparent to others, not drawing out, not
- 20:46stumbling, not not drawing out things in people's minds or such
- 20:50that would get their eyes off the Lord for sure.
- 20:52But for these priests, there was a distinction, and the
- 20:55distinction was in their clothing or their priestly
- 20:58garments. They would visibly be set apart
- 21:02from any other activity. Today.
- 21:03I think one of the ways that true leaders are visibly set
- 21:07apart in the church is by their servanthood.
- 21:11By their servanthood would you would expect a person in a
- 21:14position of authority to no longer serve anymore.
- 21:18That's the way of the world. But in God's church, it's the
- 21:21exact opposite than the way of the world, because in God's
- 21:24church, those that are responsible serve more, not
- 21:29less. And that's a visible
- 21:31representation. But we looked at these unique
- 21:34clothing that was given to the Jewish priests.
- 21:38These are the men that would lead worship.
- 21:40These are the men that would have very precise clothing that
- 21:43all of the pieces and threads would point to the coming of
- 21:46Messiah. You see that really in verse 2
- 21:49of 28. You shall make holy garments for
- 21:51Aaron your brother, for glory and beauty.
- 21:54So important #3 about the priests.
- 21:57The priest represented men before God.
- 22:00The priest represented men before God.
- 22:02If you want to jump to verse 29, it says so.
- 22:06Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel on the
- 22:08breastplate of judgment over his heart when he goes into the holy
- 22:13place as a memorial before the Lord.
- 22:16Continually so as Aaron would come before God, he would bring
- 22:20the names of the tribes on his chest.
- 22:22He would remember He's not there for himself, but he's
- 22:26representative of all the nation.
- 22:31The priest would represent man before God.
- 22:34Later on, a new office was created, a new office.
- 22:39And by the way, both of these two offices, Jesus held them
- 22:43both. There was the priest and the
- 22:46prophets. Later on you will see prophecy
- 22:50in the prophets take a very large role in the ministry of
- 22:54God. The prophet would represent God
- 22:58to the people. The priest would bring the
- 23:00people and represent the people to God.
- 23:03But the prophet would speak on behalf of God and represent God
- 23:08to the people. And so the priest, he would take
- 23:11care of the cares of the people and encourage them and help them
- 23:15along the way, always remembering on his chest, next
- 23:20to his heart, he carried the names of the tribes, remembering
- 23:27what his role, why he was set apart, why he was ordained, what
- 23:32his purpose on earth really was #4 We see something else with
- 23:37the priests in verse 30. It says you shall put in the
- 23:43breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim, and they shall
- 23:47go over Aaron's heart when he goes in before the Lord.
- 23:50And Aaron will bear the judgment of the children of Israel over
- 23:53his heart before the Lord. Continually #4 The priest would
- 23:58help discover the will of God. The priest would help discover
- 24:04the will of God. The Urim and the Thummim were
- 24:07often used to lay before God seeking His will.
- 24:11Some believe they were Blackstone and a whitestone even
- 24:14with inscriptions on them. But either way, they would, they
- 24:16would use them as a way to discern the will of God for the
- 24:21people. And the priest would be that
- 24:24help and that service to help people know God's will.
- 24:29And then the fifth thing is what I want to spend our remaining
- 24:31time on today. The fifth thing, super important
- 24:35is almost as important. It's like the bookends and so
- 24:38applicable to us today, number one, that ordination of God,
- 24:42that calling of God that that not only is that ordination of
- 24:46God, you know, when someone is ordained here in this church,
- 24:49the church doesn't ordain them. The church just recognizes them.
- 24:53By the time someone comes up to the stage and we pray over them
- 24:57or we say, I want you guys, you everyone's like, what's taking
- 25:00you so long like that? Brother has been faithful here
- 25:03for years and years and years and years.
- 25:04And it is that ratification. No church or group of men, not
- 25:08even the man himself can take that upon himself.
- 25:12No church, no pastor has the power to ordain a man.
- 25:16What the church has and the leadership and the elders have
- 25:19is the power to approve of God's choice, to say we recognize it,
- 25:23we've experienced it, we've received it.
- 25:26God has used this brother and all we can say is yes and Amen
- 25:30and present him to you and say here he is the man that God
- 25:34desires to use and has been using.
- 25:36So the first one's so important, but this last one equally
- 25:40important. Listen, the priest had to take
- 25:42their calling very seriously. It was a life and death matter.
- 25:51Let me just say today I'm grateful that by the blood of
- 25:55Jesus and the grace of God, it is not so much a life and death
- 26:00matter as we see in a moment. For the pastor or the leader of
- 26:05the church, if they choose not to take things so seriously,
- 26:09there's great grace and forgiveness.
- 26:12But I will say this, when a pastor or a leader doesn't take
- 26:16their calling seriously, it's really spiritual life and death
- 26:21for so many. It's spiritual life and death.
- 26:26I think of everyone in our own little church family here.
- 26:29I think of the worship team, the men, the women up here, anyone
- 26:32that's leading prayer, anyone that's looking you in the eye.
- 26:36That's a pretty important position, you know, looking you
- 26:40in the eye and standing here with the authority of God in
- 26:44this pulpit. Let's pray together, let's sing.
- 26:48If those men and women don't take that seriously, it could be
- 26:51life or death spiritually for you.
- 26:54It could lead you in the wrong direction.
- 26:56It could stumble you now I'm not removing your personal
- 27:00responsibility at all. You're ultimately and I'm
- 27:03ultimately we can't be standing before God and go, you know, I
- 27:05wouldn't have ever done that if it wasn't for that guy up on
- 27:08this. No, no, you can't.
- 27:08That's that's an excuse. There's no man will have an
- 27:11excuse before God. There is personal
- 27:14responsibility, but I want to remind you, there's personal
- 27:16responsibility for both, both the person that is looking you
- 27:20in the eye and you looking me in the eye.
- 27:24It's very important not only as a pastor, as a leader, as a
- 27:27singer, as a worship leader, as a prayer, as a someone that is
- 27:31giving a testimony of the power of God.
- 27:34Not only is that important, not only is that vital, but listen,
- 27:39the significance of our response is just as vital.
- 27:43How important it is for us to know in our own walks with the
- 27:47Lord and when we're just looking at one person in the face at
- 27:50work, you know, the person that you saw crying and when they
- 27:54came in to the office on Tuesday and what happened, you went
- 27:57right over to them and check on them.
- 27:59Are you doing OK? How was your week?
- 28:01You started praying with them. You represented Jesus to them.
- 28:06And then the next thing you know, they hear you got fired
- 28:09because you're a thief. They're like what?
- 28:12Well, yeah, you know, I just needed that pencil.
- 28:15It's like, whatever. No, I have.
- 28:17We had people steal all kinds. I just needed.
- 28:19I had somebody I had to fire once.
- 28:20I stole a computer. Like, how would we not find that
- 28:23out? I just needed that computer.
- 28:26Yeah, well, now you need a new job, bro.
- 28:28That's how that works. But how much more?
- 28:32How much more in the corporate world, in the office, and when
- 28:37you look someone in the eye and you represent Jesus to them,
- 28:40that they're going to hold you to that because they're going to
- 28:44they're going to get through that difficulty.
- 28:45And they may get back to their old wayward ways.
- 28:48They may get back to their old Pagan ways and you're still
- 28:51following the Lord, and it's important that you realize how
- 28:55significant it is that God would give you that one person.
- 29:02That's God's gift to you. You can't be a hireling to them,
- 29:05someone that doesn't care about the sheep.
- 29:08You got to learn how to be like the Good Shepherd who gives your
- 29:11life. So now God has taken you to
- 29:14another level of responsibility so that you follow him.
- 29:18The priest higher than anyone had to take this calling there.
- 29:23You couldn't just go into the presence of God unprepared.
- 29:28You couldn't go into the holy of holies unprepared.
- 29:31Notice in chapter 29 verse one, it says, and this is what you
- 29:35shall do to hallow them. And we'll get into this in our
- 29:38study next time. But this is what you shall do to
- 29:40them to hallow them for ministering to me as priests.
- 29:45You, you need there. There is a whole process to set
- 29:48them apart sacrificially, to prepare them to go into the holy
- 29:54of holies. If you abuse the role of a
- 29:57priest, you could die, be wiped out.
- 30:01You dare not go into the God's presence lightly.
- 30:06Which leads us to our text that we're going to end with today in
- 30:10Leviticus. Would you turn over now to
- 30:12Leviticus? If you skip Leviticus this, look
- 30:15at what you missed, Leviticus chapter 10.
- 30:18There's some real key Nuggets in Leviticus, all as there are
- 30:23throughout the scriptures. And notice Genesis, Exodus,
- 30:27Leviticus chapter 10. And this is where you can create
- 30:31your own little cross references.
- 30:33You can write in your Bible, you can write a little reference
- 30:36going backwards, because you'll recall in Exodus chapter 28
- 30:42years earlier, it says take Aaron your brother, verse one,
- 30:46his son's with him among the children, Aaron's and Aaron's
- 30:49sons, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithemar.
- 30:55Well, notice Leviticus 10 verse one, then Nadab and Abihu.
- 30:59Who are they? Aaron's sons, Priests Nedab and
- 31:04Abihu, By the way, looking for baby names.
- 31:09I'm always up for suggestions, but here Ned, little Nedab, or
- 31:12Abihu don't use these names. They're not going to bring back
- 31:15any good memories. Look, the sons of Aaron each
- 31:18took a sensor and put fire in it and put incense on it and
- 31:23offered profane fire. Or in some of your Bibles it
- 31:28might say strange fire. I think that's an old King James
- 31:32phrase before the Lord which he had not commanded them.
- 31:37So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them and they died
- 31:41before the Lord. They Dab and ABI who are gone.
- 31:45Why? Well, not because they weren't
- 31:50appointed by God. They were not because they
- 31:54didn't have special clothes. They did not because they
- 31:59represented man before God. They did well, not because they
- 32:04helped the people discover the will of God.
- 32:06They did, but because they didn't take their calling very
- 32:11seriously. We don't have the full, complete
- 32:16story of what happened in their lives or what was going on in
- 32:20their hearts, but we do have an insight They took profane fire.
- 32:25God never commanded them to do that, so they're in
- 32:27disobedience. They're doing their own thing,
- 32:31their own way, and the God sent fire out and they died before
- 32:36the Lord. Notice verse 3, Moses said to
- 32:38Aaron, This is what the Lord spoke, saying by those who come
- 32:42near me, I must be regarded as holy and before all the people I
- 32:47must be glorified. So Aaron held his peace, and
- 32:51Moses called Michiel and Elsa Fan, the sons of Uzio the uncle
- 32:55of Aaron, and said to them, Come near, carry your brethren from
- 32:59before the sanctuary out of the camp.
- 33:02So they went near, and carried them by their tunics out of the
- 33:04camp, as Moses had said. And Moses said to Aaron and the
- 33:09Eliezer and Ithimar as sons, do not uncover your heads, nor tear
- 33:13your clothes, lest you die, and wrath come upon all the people.
- 33:17But let your brethren, the whole House of Israel bewail the
- 33:21burning which the Lord has kindled.
- 33:23Verse 7. You shall go out from the door
- 33:25of the Tabernacle of meaning, lest you die, for the anointing
- 33:28oil of the Lord is upon you. And they did, according to the
- 33:32word of Moses. Then the Lord spoke to Aaron,
- 33:34saying, Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink you, nor your
- 33:39son's with you. When you go into the Tabernacle
- 33:41of meaning, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever
- 33:46throughout all your generations, that you may distinguish between
- 33:49holy and unholy, between clean and unclean, and that you may
- 33:53teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has
- 33:57spoken to them by the hand of Moses, Nedab, and Abihu.
- 34:02Strange fire which was not commanded in this exciting time
- 34:08of ministry. In the life of the children of
- 34:10Israel, there's false worship, worship that wasn't commanded,
- 34:16and it's really sad to see such rebellion and disobedience so
- 34:20quickly. The day could have ended in a
- 34:22glorious worship, but in God. Instead, God had it end with the
- 34:26funeral and a strong rebuke and warning.
- 34:31The scene is people are in awe, God's glory is there.
- 34:35They begin to shout, they fall on their faces, and Aaron's two
- 34:39sons, I'm sure caught up in the emotion of it all, grabbed their
- 34:43golden censors and they put strange fire in them.
- 34:48At first glance, it seems as if they took things into their own
- 34:52hands, prescribing their own worship service.
- 34:58We do know this, as God explains in verse three, if you're going
- 35:03to come near him, he has to be regarded as holy.
- 35:06So whatever this episode was, Nedab and Abihu did not regard
- 35:10God as holy or set apart taking things upon their own selves,
- 35:15prescribing their own worship service.
- 35:17And might I just add, it's not the topic of our Bible study
- 35:20today, but I have done studies on it and I also have written on
- 35:24my blog about this. But there's also a strong hint
- 35:27that they were drunk. And that's the warning down in
- 35:31verse 9 telling Aaron, don't you drink any intoxicating drink nor
- 35:36your sons don't do it lest you die.
- 35:41It's going to be a statue forever.
- 35:44And if that's the case, it would make sense under the influence.
- 35:46They would do many things that don't please the Lord.
- 35:49Anyone that's ever had a problem with alcohol or drugs can
- 35:52testify to that same testimony. I look back on my own life and I
- 35:57think almost every bad thing I did that was grand and even the
- 36:02small things was under the influence of some substance.
- 36:08That's a Bible study for another time.
- 36:09Or you can go on my website at edtaylor.org.
- 36:14And I wrote a very thorough article on this to beg you to
- 36:19set that liberty aside for your own personal walk.
- 36:22It's not. The question isn't can a
- 36:25believer drink? The Bible never prohibits in the
- 36:28New Covenant a believer from drinking alcohol.
- 36:31That's not prohibited. That's but that's the wrong
- 36:33question to ask. Can the better question to ask,
- 36:37is it wise? We'll ask, Nay, dab in a bahu
- 36:41and you go, I can't, they're dead.
- 36:43I know, I know. Perhaps they were attempting to
- 36:49take glory from God. They lack the real fear of God
- 36:56as the people are worshipping. Suddenly these two men jump in,
- 37:01rushing with their golden censors.
- 37:02Now instead of worshipping God, they're now focused on these two
- 37:07men. And we're reminded in Isaiah 42
- 37:10verse 8 that God says I am the Lord.
- 37:13That is my name and my glory. I will not give to another nor
- 37:17praise the carving images. And that's why in an environment
- 37:20like this, the emphasis in an environment right now in this
- 37:23sanctuary is on the teaching of God's Word.
- 37:26That's why the emphasis within worship is be expressive and
- 37:31give yourself wholly to the Lord, but don't do it in such a
- 37:34way where everyone's looking at you and there are churches that
- 37:39run their services like that. Everyone's looking at you now,
- 37:42but we didn't come to look at you.
- 37:46We came to worship God and how important it is.
- 37:51His glory is not to be shared. His glory is not to be taken.
- 37:56Whenever God's working through you in a supernatural way, the
- 37:59warning is be careful because people will always try to look
- 38:04to you and you can't accept it. It happened all that we studied
- 38:08through the book of Acts. It happened all throughout the
- 38:10book of Acts. But I was no, no, no, don't look
- 38:13to me, Paul says. I'm not God.
- 38:17You have to be careful as God begins to use you.
- 38:20That's why taking things seriously, taking your calling
- 38:23seriously, so important. And if not taking attention from
- 38:29people, the danger and temptation becomes taking God's
- 38:32glory from him. Now, of course that's impossible
- 38:35to do, but taking people's eyes off the Lord is a very dangerous
- 38:40thing. Be careful that God gets all the
- 38:42glory, all the praise, all the honor for all the great things
- 38:47He has done. Very important.
- 38:49So what was a strange fire? That remains the question in
- 38:53Nadab and Abihu. We don't know for sure, but I do
- 38:57have some thoughts. And just to surround the scene
- 39:01here, number one, they were the wrong people to handle the
- 39:04incense. This was the task of their dad,
- 39:07the high priest. Exodus 30s, we'll study in the
- 39:10future. Number 2, they used the wrong
- 39:12instruments. The censor of the high priest.
- 39:15The censor of the high priest was sanctified by oil.
- 39:18Exodus chapter 40. Again, we'll get there later.
- 39:21They acted at the wrong time. Verse 3 or #3 this wasn't the
- 39:26Day of Atonement. Leviticus chapter 16 #4 They
- 39:31presumptively acted with the wrong authority.
- 39:34Nowhere do we read of them consulting with Moses, Aaron, or
- 39:37even with God. And we see that they did
- 39:40something that they were never commanded to do, and #5 they
- 39:44acted with the wrong motives. We don't know their hearts
- 39:47exactly, but we see their judgment and we see the
- 39:50declaration surrounding their judgment, and we can come to
- 39:54educated guesses and conclusions based on the text.
- 39:58We can look at the text, study the text, and come to a logical
- 40:02biblical conclusion. They had the wrong motives.
- 40:05It appears they didn't seek to glorify only God, and instead of
- 40:08inquiring, inquiring, and waiting, they presumed and
- 40:12hacked it, acted hastily. So wrong people, wrong
- 40:16instruments, wrong time, wrong authority, wrong motives.
- 40:20What they did was wrong any way you cut it.
- 40:25Whatever direction you want to take, they were wrong, but they
- 40:28were wrong in the worst of ways. It cost them their lives.
- 40:33And there is that danger for us to offer strange fire to the
- 40:36Lord doing something even with good intentions the wrong way
- 40:42and suffer as a consequence, many of good even great
- 40:46intentions, but end up making up their own religion and their own
- 40:50worship and their own thing. I think of Jesus and his
- 40:55teaching about the wide gate. Remember that the wide gate,
- 40:59Matthew Chapter 7 verse 13, it says enter by the narrow gate.
- 41:03Who defines the narrow gate? God.
- 41:07We need to worship God the right way.
- 41:09We need to follow God the right way.
- 41:12We need to live life the right way.
- 41:14Jesus said you need to enter in through that narrow gate because
- 41:18why? It is the gate, He said and
- 41:20broad is the way that leads to destruction and there are many
- 41:24who go in by it because narrow is the gate and difficult is the
- 41:29way which leads to life and there are few who find it.
- 41:34So when you think of the priesthood and you think of and
- 41:38you meditate upon some of the applications to modern day
- 41:41service and modern day leadership, just leave with
- 41:44this. Take it seriously, especially in
- 41:47our church. I'm only responsible for the
- 41:49leadership of this church. And I'm asking you, I'm telling
- 41:52you, I'm exhorting you, I'm begging you, take it seriously
- 41:56because people's lives are at stake, perhaps even your own.
- 42:00But people's lives, their families, it matters.
- 42:04They don't come to church. They really don't come to
- 42:07church. You want to use modern day
- 42:08language, They don't come to church for you.
- 42:11If they do, you need to rebuke them.
- 42:14They need to come to church for the Lord to worship him, to
- 42:19yield to him, to engage with him with other believers, to
- 42:24continue steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and in prayer
- 42:29and in fellowship and in the breaking of bread.
- 42:32That's why not for you, not that you can Lord over them, take
- 42:38advantage of them. You see someone coming in and
- 42:42go. What the first thing you think
- 42:43of is what can you get from them?
- 42:45That's a hireling mentality. The shepherd's mentality is what
- 42:50can I do for you? How can I serve you?
- 42:53How can I give? How can I help you grow?
- 42:58How can I get your eyes on the Lord?
- 43:00How can I help you solve that problem after you leave your
- 43:04prayer closet? How can I help you get through
- 43:06your drama? Let's just get through it to the
- 43:10Lord. Let's see your new identity.
- 43:13Let's see you grow in grace. Let's see you walk in victory.
- 43:18Let's watch you thrive. See true generational change.
- 43:23You know, a lot of emphasis today is on that false teaching
- 43:26of generational curses. Generational curses.
- 43:29Enough of it. It's not true.
- 43:32It's not true at all. But I'll tell you what is true.
- 43:36That's throughout the Scriptures.
- 43:38Not generational curses, but generational change through the
- 43:43blood of Jesus Christ. Ministering to your parents and
- 43:46your grandparents. Raising godly kids.
- 43:49Correcting any mistakes you made before.
- 43:52Learning how to be a man yourself.
- 43:54Learning how to be a woman. Learning how to be a dad.
- 43:57Learning how to be a friend. Do you know how much wisdom God
- 44:00has for you? The generations change with you.
- 44:04That's all throughout the scriptures.
- 44:06But you have to deny yourself, take up your cross, get back to
- 44:14that narrow way. But you know God is deposited in
- 44:18every believer, the heart of a shepherd.
- 44:19You know why? Because he gave you his heart.
- 44:23It's God that lives in you. He's the Good Shepherd.
- 44:29And Jesus, we get to see it in his life.
- 44:33He lived and he ate and he ministered among the people.
- 44:42He gave himself, not above them. He didn't elevate himself.
- 44:47I really do believe that if we came up on the crowd, Jesus and
- 44:51his guys and the women all around him, we would have to
- 44:54look a couple times to find Jesus.
- 44:58He may have been, they could have been, you know, standing
- 45:01behind him and such, and it would be easier.
- 45:03But there was nothing about him in his humanity that drew more
- 45:09attention from him on purpose. He was caring for the sheep with
- 45:17the sheep. And he didn't run away in our
- 45:22greatest need, and he didn't run away in his darkest hour.
- 45:28We go to Israel. We go into this private garden
- 45:32in Gethsemane and all the buses are honking and life is
- 45:38happening outside the walls of this little private garden.
- 45:41But when you're in it, it's very quiet and serene.
- 45:46We give time for those on the tour to have some private prayer
- 45:49time all throughout the garden and they spread out and some sit
- 45:52under a tree, some sit against the rocks, some, and it's always
- 45:56an emotional moment just being able to pray in Garden of
- 46:00Gethsemane. It's beautiful, it's wonderful.
- 46:02I can't wait to take you back, but one thing you remember in
- 46:08the Garden of the Gethsemane is that Jesus didn't quit on you.
- 46:15He pressed through all the way. The victory for your sin was not
- 46:21one in Gethsemane, it was one upon the cross, but the
- 46:26demonstration of the endurance and the death to self, Jesus
- 46:33denying himself to obey the Father.
- 46:36Will you get a glimpse of it and Gethsemane?
- 46:39Not my will, Jesus says, but your will be done if we leave
- 46:46here today with that, if we remember the priests here, we
- 46:50just remembered the Jesus being the prophet and the priest.
- 46:54It's a beautiful thing of God using US in these 21st century.
- 46:59Amen. So, good Lord, thank you for
- 47:01your word. And may we be the men and women
- 47:04you've called us to be. And just these little reminders
- 47:07of the priests, how they were set apart, unique.
- 47:12They weren't like the everyone else.
- 47:16And today, that priesthood of all believers, we're not like
- 47:20everyone else. There's a calling upon our
- 47:23lives, a purpose, a direction, but when we find ourselves on
