- 0:04Welcome to the Four Freedom podcast.
- 0:10I found my freedom of you. I found a.
- 0:16Joy I can't lose. And thank God it's true.
- 0:21You wrapped your arms around me and heaven broke through from
- 0:26the moment she found me. I found my freedom in you.
- 0:32This podcast exists to bring the freedom of the gospel for
- 0:36everyday Christians with everyday issues.
- 0:40Now here are your hosts, James Seyfrik and Brett Martin.
- 0:47Welcome back everyone, to the Four Freedom Podcast.
- 0:50We're here to offer hope and help and healing from those
- 0:53who've been spiritually abused in the IFB movement.
- 0:57And man, we are thankful and grateful for you as listeners
- 1:01who have tuned in faithfully every week over the last.
- 1:05Oh man, feels like 20 something weeks the first half of the
- 1:08year. And we're excited about going
- 1:11into our break. Our summer break will be taking
- 1:13the month of June and July off and hoping to jump back up in
- 1:17August. And I got a lot of great things
- 1:19planned already. Our schedule is almost full for
- 1:23the last half of the year. But Brett, man, we're excited.
- 1:27We leave in just a couple of days to be together at the
- 1:31Southern Baptist Convention and I hope you are excited about
- 1:35that as I am and ready to go to Indiana, Indianapolis and be
- 1:40there. How are you doing, man?
- 1:42I'm excited about it. You know, we've been planning
- 1:45this trip for, I mean, I guess you'd call it a year since last
- 1:50year when we were in New Orleans.
- 1:51We've been planning this trip and it's hard to believe that
- 1:54it's here and we'll be there. I guess we'll be there this
- 1:58Saturday in Indianapolis and most of next week.
- 2:01So yeah, we've definitely been looking forward to it a lot and
- 2:06it's kind of the end of my my first season on the podcast.
- 2:10I know that y'all would have rather had John than me, but I
- 2:14have definitely enjoyed my time on the podcast so far.
- 2:20And I look forward to, you know, coming back from the break and
- 2:24hit the road running again. Yeah.
- 2:27And we are excited about those who are going to be there in
- 2:30Indianapolis with us and getting to hang out with us a lot of.
- 2:34People are coming. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:36We are hoping to be able to do some lunches and some dinners
- 2:38with people. And me and Brett have rent a
- 2:40house. I've actually got a guy that's
- 2:43real close to the church here. He doesn't go to our church, but
- 2:46he said he'd love to go sometime.
- 2:48And so I told him, hey, man, we're we're get a house and come
- 2:51hang out with us. And so he said maybe next year
- 2:53if he can swing it with his work schedule.
- 2:55And so that, that's going to be great.
- 2:58But man, I'm looking forward to really this is, it's one of
- 3:01those times to get away. It's, I don't want to say
- 3:06vacation time, but it is a time of being away from ministry,
- 3:11hearing good preaching at the pastor's conference and then
- 3:14being able to sit under the business of the SPC.
- 3:17I tell people often, if we're going to be Southern Baptist, if
- 3:20we're going to be part of the convention, we need to be there.
- 3:23We need to have a voice, we need to have a say, we need to have a
- 3:26vote. And if we're not going to have a
- 3:28vote, if we're not going to have a say, then there's no point in
- 3:30being a part of it. And so one of the things that I,
- 3:35me and Marcus talked about last year when I was there is he said
- 3:39it's like Halloween for Baptist is what we call it.
- 3:42Because we go into the exhibition hall, the exhibition
- 3:45hall where all the exhibits are set up and it's like candy and
- 3:50free books and they're giving away Yeti coolers and you got to
- 3:54register. And it's like, yeah, this is
- 3:56this is the Baptist Halloween. Like we're going around and
- 3:58we're stocking up on candy before the trip and we're
- 4:01picking up all these free books and yeah, it's great.
- 4:04You. Are I've heard you are the book
- 4:06master. Man, one year, one year, Brett,
- 4:10I came back with about 60 lbs of books because we flew to
- 4:15California. And the only reason why I know
- 4:18it's that much is because we bought another suitcase, filled
- 4:21it up, and when I put it on the scale, it was about 60 lbs and I
- 4:25had to take 10 lbs out of it before I could get to the
- 4:27airport. That was my best haul, best year
- 4:30ever, but that was the year after COVID and so everybody was
- 4:34trying to give away all their excess stock from the year
- 4:36before that. Haven't had a haul since then,
- 4:39but I normally come back with a pretty good stack of books free.
- 4:44I traditionally don't pay for much when I go there.
- 4:48I try to haul in free books and free things.
- 4:52There's one again because I've been now they send me emails.
- 4:56Hey, don't forget to stop by and check out our books.
- 4:58These are our giveaways every day because they want you to
- 5:00come back every day. And so there's one booth that
- 5:03will be going to They're giving away a book on Monday.
- 5:06They're giving away a shirt and maybe a pin on Tuesday, but on
- 5:11Wednesday they're giving out Bluetooth speakers.
- 5:13And so you better believe I'm going to stop in there because
- 5:16you never know when you need a Bluetooth speaker hanging on the
- 5:19back of your backpack, being able to blare Jesus music.
- 5:22And so yeah, I'll be be hitting up different booths every day.
- 5:25I try to stop in first thing in the morning, hit all the
- 5:28freebies, and then hang out at the convention.
- 5:32And for me, now that I've been a couple of years, it's good to be
- 5:35able to see faces that I know, people that we've met and get to
- 5:38hang out with. Guys part of the RFP, not part
- 5:41of the RFP. Guys I grew up with, people that
- 5:44I went to college with. It's just good to hang out and
- 5:47I'll be around some of those people when.
- 5:50When I was in New Orleans, I, I was surprised at how many people
- 5:55I saw that I know, of course, you know, I, you know, I was
- 5:58from an area not far from New Orleans, but we saw a lot of
- 6:01people there and I was surprised how many, how much RFP fam was
- 6:08there and recognized me and come up and said, hey, and man, it
- 6:12was just good to get to hang out.
- 6:13And I'm looking forward to to this coming Saturday.
- 6:18I think it's going to be like a nine and a half hour drive for
- 6:22me on Saturday, but it'll be worth it.
- 6:24I'm looking forward to it. And I'm looking forward to the
- 6:27Pastors Conference. I didn't get a chance to go.
- 6:30I only went to like the last two sessions of the pastors
- 6:34Conference in New Orleans. And so I'm looking forward to
- 6:37attending the whole thing next week.
- 6:40Yeah, absolutely can't wait. And after that we'll be having
- 6:44our for the sake of the gospel meet up there in about South
- 6:50California. They're in Catoosa.
- 6:53They're in Brett star at J CS church.
- 6:56Man, my words are brutal today. J CS church down in Catoosa Hope
- 7:00Church there and looking forward to that.
- 7:04And then as far as we're planned right now, Israel is still on
- 7:07unless something happens unless God intervenes and and stops
- 7:10that. But we are still planning to go
- 7:13forward with going to Israel and I've been visiting the Holy Land
- 7:17and we hope you will make plans to join us and we'll go with us.
- 7:21If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to
- 7:23me or Brett. And our emails are on the
- 7:26website and you can contact us and you can direct messages and
- 7:30find out more information if you're interested in going on
- 7:33that. We also will see our Israel Rep
- 7:37next week during the during the conference.
- 7:39And so, you know, if we get any additional details about that,
- 7:42we'll put that on the Facebook page, make it available to you,
- 7:47and any extra details we get, we'll be sure to let you know.
- 7:50Absolutely looking forward to seeing Paris and Marcus and
- 7:54hanging out with him a little bit and that's going to be a
- 7:57great time. What?
- 7:58Hey Brett, one of the things I love about Marcus and you got to
- 8:00see this last year is Luther Rice has a really cool set up.
- 8:03Typically they've got nice comfy chairs and anytime I can find a
- 8:08booth with comfy chairs and have a seat, it's always good During
- 8:11that time, especially if there's something going on at the
- 8:13convention that I really don't have a need to sit in or a care
- 8:17to sit in. I'll leave and go walk through
- 8:20the exhibit hall and then just run into people and make
- 8:22connections. And some of my favorite
- 8:25connections, Brett, that I've made in the past are some just,
- 8:29you know, local guys or young guys that are, are women that
- 8:32are, we actually have had one of those contacts come on the
- 8:35podcast. We talked to the third Hope for
- 8:39Addiction last year after the convention.
- 8:42We lined up a meeting with her and we had her come on the
- 8:45interview. That was a great connection
- 8:47there. But man, there's also some great
- 8:49little curriculums that come out, some discipleship
- 8:52curriculums that people will put out and that typically they just
- 8:55give it away free. They just want to be a blessing.
- 8:57And so I've got several of those that I've picked up and used in
- 9:00the past. And, and you know, anything
- 9:03that, that are just tools in our belt that we can use to help
- 9:06disciple people in the ministry outside the ministry is also
- 9:10always a great thing. And so I, I do love that and do
- 9:14enjoy that. And then, you know, for me, life
- 9:17weighs there and they've got them.
- 9:18They typically have a 5060% off sale that goes on.
- 9:22So I try to pick up a couple of of commentaries or things that
- 9:26I'm looking at so well, I'm. Going to bring, I'm going to
- 9:30bring an empty book sack. And so I'm going to trust that
- 9:34you're going to help me fill that joker up with some books.
- 9:36And so we're going to, I'm going to be with you and we're going
- 9:39to try to, to get some good stuff this year.
- 9:41Our goal is to fill it up multiple times, Brett, everyday
- 9:44fill it up. And so well, hey, we're coming
- 9:47up on the convention and if you're not SBC guy, you may want
- 9:51to just tune us off, but may give some good information for
- 9:54you. We're going to discuss a couple
- 9:55of things going into the convention and talk about some
- 10:01some issues that are coming up, some things that they're going
- 10:04to be addressing. Really there's there's three big
- 10:06issues that they're that are always an issue.
- 10:09One is the resolutions committee.
- 10:10They come up with resolutions or just statements from the
- 10:13convention and there's ten of them this year.
- 10:16The the list of them came out this past week.
- 10:19And so I'll just read through Brett, the the resolutions and
- 10:24I'll, I'll just, like I said earlier, I'll talk about a
- 10:27couple of them that I think are going to be the most hot topic
- 10:31or contested ones. And every year there's a couple
- 10:34of them that are talked about. But we're the first resolution
- 10:37is on the SPC leadership. The second one is on defending
- 10:41religious liberty. The third is just war and the
- 10:45pursuit of peace. The 4th is justice and peace in
- 10:48the aftermath of the October 7th attack on Israel.
- 10:52The fifth one is the pro-life ethic and the post Roe society.
- 10:58The 6th one is the ethical realities of reproductive
- 11:01technology and the dignity of human human embryos.
- 11:06The 7th one is the 7th yeah is on the God-given rights and
- 11:11responsibility of parents. The next one is the danger of
- 11:14abusing non disclosure and non disparaging agreements.
- 11:18The next one is the evangelism and the Great Commission.
- 11:21And then the last one, they always do an appreciation for
- 11:23the city that we're at Indianapolis into the
- 11:26appreciation there. As I look through this list and
- 11:28I read through the different resolutions, the two that stood
- 11:31out to me that are going to be the most highly talked about
- 11:34contested. And I may be completely wrong,
- 11:36Brett, but I believe it's going to be the abusing of the non
- 11:40disclosure and non disparaging agreements based on some things
- 11:44that have happened in the SPC over the last several years with
- 11:48the convention and the colleges using these non disclosure
- 11:52agreements and how that can be. And after reading through that a
- 11:56little bit, I think so. And the last one I think will be
- 11:58talked about the most will be the ethical realities of
- 12:01reproductive technologies and the dignity of human embryos.
- 12:04That's a big topic right now with the IVF and the industry
- 12:08there. And so I think those couple of
- 12:10things are going to be talked about.
- 12:11The abortion in the Roe V Wade's always an issue that's talked
- 12:15about with the abolishment people.
- 12:17And, and I'm great with that as well.
- 12:18I, I, I believe we should abolish any type of abortion,
- 12:25but that's always a, a, a hard topic because there, there's a
- 12:29fine line where, where there, there is a group of people that
- 12:33want to abolish it and punish women that have had abortions.
- 12:38And, and so there's that fine line of, OK, well, how, how far
- 12:41do we go here? What do we do?
- 12:43We want to respect the woman. We don't know the situation
- 12:46she's in. She may even be an unsaved
- 12:48person. She may not even know Jesus.
- 12:50And she's just doing what the society has told her to do that
- 12:54unsaved people don't know what to do with what is right and
- 12:57wrong. And so there's, there's always a
- 12:59fine line there of how we can minister.
- 13:02And so those issues will be definitely big topic issues as
- 13:06well. Definitely.
- 13:08And the, the IVF is definitely a big issue that needs to be
- 13:13addressed because you know, there are you, you do have a
- 13:16responsibility when you, you know, when you make an embryo,
- 13:20you have a responsibility to that life.
- 13:23And so, but at the same time, there are parents or even good
- 13:26Christian people that, that you know, want to have children and
- 13:30can't have children unless they go through this process.
- 13:34I personally know some couples that, you know, Christians and,
- 13:39you know, had to go through this process to have children and
- 13:42could not have children any other way.
- 13:45And now they're blessed with children.
- 13:46And that's a good thing. And so it's a brand new door.
- 13:51It's a brand new area. We never thought that Roe V.
- 13:55Wade would ever be overturned. I never thought I would ever see
- 13:59that in my entire life. So now we've got this new, this
- 14:04new realm that we have to deal with these new issues.
- 14:08And while that's a good thing, that that does bring up more
- 14:11questions and more issues that we need to deal with.
- 14:14And so, yeah, I think that definitely talked about.
- 14:18Absolutely. And and Speaking of Roe V Wade
- 14:20there, Brett, what some of the problem with some of the
- 14:22conservative states are is that when Roe V Wade did get
- 14:26overturned, it reverted back to the the law of the land in the
- 14:30state and it went back to what they had passed.
- 14:33And some of the states, instead of staying conservative and
- 14:36saying we're not going to have any abortion, we went to a six
- 14:40or eight or twelve week ban on abortion up until that point.
- 14:44And So what happened was is when it did get overturned, it went
- 14:50back to, well, now they can have it in this state up to 12 weeks
- 14:53or up to six weeks or up to 8 weeks.
- 14:55And so there were a couple states that had still in the
- 14:58books where abortion was illegal in that state, but the federal
- 15:02government had it to where it was legal.
- 15:04So when that was overturned, it went back and some of these
- 15:06states were set up to where it stayed at an illegal set up.
- 15:11And so that's where we as as Christians need to be wise and
- 15:16be diligent on what we do and how we pass things and how we
- 15:20word things because as when things do get overturned in in
- 15:24God's sovereignty and God's grace upon upon those lawmakers
- 15:28were able to overturn that. Well, now it's back to the
- 15:30state. And so we're having to fight
- 15:32other battles. And so those are some things.
- 15:36Next up Brett, I I think we'll talk about is the we'll save the
- 15:40the article that you have printed out for us for the last
- 15:43thing is the law amendment. This is the amendment in the
- 15:47bylaws. It was passed last year, but to
- 15:50amend the bylaws, it has to be passed two years in a row and
- 15:53law amendment goes just basically the state that we're
- 15:56clarifying and further defining the role of a pastor at a
- 16:00church. Pastor should be a male ordained
- 16:03man up of upright standing and it's just clarifying that
- 16:08language. I'm for it.
- 16:10I think it's a great thing. I think if anything, if people
- 16:14weren't for it last year, they should evaluate and look at
- 16:17what's happening to the United Methodist Church right now and
- 16:21understand that if we don't define more properly and more
- 16:25clearly where we stand, then bad things will happen in the
- 16:28future. And I don't know if you follow
- 16:30the news or not, but in one day, in one day, the United Methodist
- 16:35Church lost 1,000,000 members, 110th of their association of
- 16:43their, of their community pulled out from the United Methodist
- 16:47Convention because they went far to the left.
- 16:52But, but it didn't happen in one day, Brett.
- 16:54It happened because ten years ago, 12 years ago, the United
- 16:58Methodist Commission began to adopt women pastors.
- 17:03And when they began to adopt women pastors, now it became a
- 17:06transgender pastor. And after a transgender pastor,
- 17:09it became a homosexual couple. And after a homosexual couple.
- 17:12Now we've got to take our confession of faith and we've
- 17:16got to adopt it to fit where our confession is AT.
- 17:19And now we're taking things away from a confession.
- 17:22And so I would rather add things and be more conservative
- 17:26fiscally in our confession than to to not have it there and to
- 17:30open a door for us to go into a slippery slope of where we're at
- 17:35and so. You should think that is this
- 17:37going to seriously, they lost a million members you think was
- 17:41just going to hurt them financially?
- 17:42Well, not at first, because you have to understand what the
- 17:46Methodist, the individual individual churches don't own
- 17:50their property. So like the organization owns
- 17:53their property. So in order for a church to pull
- 17:56out of the, of the Methodist, they have to sell their property
- 18:02and give the, the UMC the, the money.
- 18:07And so they'll, they'll coast on that money for a little while,
- 18:10but eventually it is going to hurt them.
- 18:13And it's just a, it's such a sad, sad thing to see compromise
- 18:19destroy something like that. But I'm glad to see there's
- 18:22still some people that are still standing by what the word of God
- 18:25says. Yeah, well, it just goes to show
- 18:27how large 'cause this was the Ivory Coast Association of the
- 18:31United Meth Convention, which was the African Convention that
- 18:34pulled out. Just goes to show how strong in
- 18:37other worlds, other countries that we sometimes see as Third
- 18:41world countries are more conservative and more balanced
- 18:45in their approach to ministry than sometimes we are.
- 18:47And that the African Convention said, we're not going to stand
- 18:50with this and the entire after convention is going to pull out,
- 18:54which is 10% of the population of the United Methodists, which
- 18:58is a huge signal to say we need to be aware, we need to be on
- 19:03guard and there's opportunities for us to plant our stake and to
- 19:08further define where we're at and to make some great
- 19:12confessional statements of where we're at as a convention.
- 19:16And so for those reasons, I'm for it because we know Scripture
- 19:19says it's for a male only pastors.
- 19:22And so why would we not be for that?
- 19:24Why would we not say, yeah, let's go ahead and make this
- 19:27crystal clear in our own confession, in our own bylaws,
- 19:31in our own what we believe. And go ahead and put this there
- 19:34because we want to be Brett. I'll put like this in our
- 19:39church. And in my church, I try as much
- 19:42as humanly possible to make sure that every member of my church
- 19:47is a born again believer. That's it's a membership, that's
- 19:51basic membership. OK.
- 19:53And so if that's going to be the case there, why would we not
- 19:56have sets of guidelines for churches that are going to
- 20:00cooperate in, in friendly cooperation with our churches
- 20:03that is closely defined as we can.
- 20:06And so we're only going to be stronger together than we are
- 20:10separate. And if we take that mentality,
- 20:12we're going to take it to its fullest extent and say, OK,
- 20:15let's be together in one mindset of what we believe and and how
- 20:18we cooperate together. Absolutely.
- 20:21Yes, Sir. So.
- 20:23Brett, let's talk about this last thing and then we'll be
- 20:25done. Shorter episode today, but just
- 20:27hitting a couple of things as we head to the convention and then
- 20:30we'll we'll talk about something what's, what's the last thought
- 20:32of of today of what we think is going to be big at the
- 20:34convention coming up? The question on the table is,
- 20:39does the SPC have a need, a need for creed?
- 20:45So this last issue is so next month for Southern Baptist, and
- 20:50I'm going to go ahead and read the names Andrew Brown, Stephen
- 20:53Lawrence, Steve McKinnon and Malcolm Yarnell are going to
- 20:56move that the messengers amend the Baptist faith and messages,
- 21:00the Baptist faith and message with the article, the creed, the
- 21:04creed they're referring to is none other than the 19 Creed.
- 21:09And So what they want to do is they want to take the Nicene
- 21:12Creed and they want to add it to the Baptist Faith and Message
- 21:172000. And they're doing this, they
- 21:21claim, for the sake of doctrinal clarity and increase unity.
- 21:25Now, I've seen a lot of things go back and forth.
- 21:29I've seen, I've read a lot of people's opinion on this before.
- 21:33I kind of developed my own opinion.
- 21:35Some people are for putting the creed in there because it's a
- 21:39historical, you know, early church creed that's, you know, a
- 21:43lot of people agree with and they say it just gives more
- 21:46clarity on some certain issues and just adds depth to the
- 21:52Baptist faith and message 2000. So that's one side of it.
- 21:56But then there's the other side of it where, you know, is it
- 22:00just a redundancy? Is it, you know, isn't the
- 22:03Baptist faith and message isn't it, you know, sufficient as, you
- 22:10know, as a confession? You know, what extra details is
- 22:16this going to? Is Creed going to add the
- 22:18Baptist faith and message doesn't already have?
- 22:21And I can't see too much where you know it is going to add
- 22:25anything, anything extra. What's your opinion on it?
- 22:30Well, Brett, when I first saw this come out and I think maybe
- 22:35you or John or someone shared it with me, my initial thought was,
- 22:39oh, I know that. I see in Creed, it's a, it's a
- 22:41great Creed, It's a, it's a great statement.
- 22:44No, I'm not, I'm not against that.
- 22:46I, I think it's great. That was my first initial knee
- 22:50jerk reaction. Then I began to sort of look
- 22:53into it a little more, compare what it said in this Article 9
- 22:58of the Nicaea and Creed to the actual Baptist Faith and
- 23:01Message. And what I began to see is
- 23:05there's a, there's a progression in when the, when the writers of
- 23:08the Baptist Faith Message 2000 sat down and wrote things, they
- 23:12wrote it in a progressional sense.
- 23:14And so it starts at one point, talks through the church and
- 23:19Godhead, the Father, the Son, the Spirit begins to walk
- 23:22through all these different things in a progressional sense.
- 23:27And so there is a structure to it for a specific reason and a
- 23:31specific purpose to it. And then it sort of bundles
- 23:36everything in together. When you throw the Creed in at
- 23:39the end, it disconjoins that a little bit because the things in
- 23:44the Creed have, yeah, the things in the Creed have already been
- 23:47talked about. The things that that there.
- 23:50It's sort of like rehashing the same thing that was just
- 23:52discussed. So when I saw that, I was like,
- 23:55OK, that doesn't really flow with the Baptist faith and
- 23:58message for my first thing. Exactly.
- 24:01Yeah. The second thing and I think
- 24:03Molar had said this is Baptists are or the Southern Baptist
- 24:08Convention is a confessionalist convention.
- 24:11We adhere to confessions of faith.
- 24:14The Baptist faith and message is a confession.
- 24:17The Southern Baptist Convention in in its existence 100 and 7080
- 24:23years, however long it's been, they have never adopted a creed.
- 24:27They are not credo Baptist. They are confessionalist
- 24:30Baptist. So for that reason, this would
- 24:33go against the traditional norms of the Southern Baptist
- 24:38Convention as we are confessionalist, we're not credo
- 24:41Baptist. We affirm that our creed is the
- 24:45Bible and that's where we stand on our credo.
- 24:49So for those reasons, after looking at it from that side of
- 24:53it and after thinking about it, after praying through it, I, I,
- 24:56I don't think I would be for this, for the reason of it.
- 24:59It causes this discomfort, disunity, uncohesion of
- 25:06thoughts. And then the last thing it does
- 25:09is it, it puts us in the Baptist faith and message.
- 25:11And so if a church is not a credo church that does not have
- 25:15creeds in their church and they just forsake of, of unity and
- 25:20forsake of clarity, decide that they don't want to be a part of
- 25:24a credo, well then they would not be in friendly cooperation
- 25:28with the church. And so for those reasons, I, I
- 25:31think I would be against this. This article been brought up to
- 25:35amend the Baptist Faith of Masses 2000.
- 25:38A couple of points that I want to bring out in this article.
- 25:41Is it? It says a couple things.
- 25:42It says the oldest generations of Baptist quoted the Nicene
- 25:47Creed verbatim, and then you're dark down.
- 25:49And it says for nearly two millennia, Christians have
- 25:52universally used the Creed for both teaching and worship.
- 25:57Now, listen for me, if you're trying to appeal to me,
- 26:01tradition is not the way to do it, OK?
- 26:04Tradition is just not a good enough reason for me.
- 26:08We need to do it this way because we've always done it
- 26:11this way. You know, more of a appeal to me
- 26:15is what's in the word of God. You know, and like you, you, you
- 26:19had said, we were talking about this earlier and you said for
- 26:23the Southern Baptist, the Bible is our creed.
- 26:26You know, the New Testament is our creed.
- 26:28So traditionalism is not, is not a good way to, you know, to
- 26:33appeal to me about this. And then near the end of the
- 26:37article, it talks about, you know, the Dean of Southern
- 26:40Baptist theologians, James Leo Garrett Junior, noted even the
- 26:44most recent version of the Baptist faith and message
- 26:48remains underdeveloped regarding the Trinity.
- 26:51And you know, I, I just don't, I think it's sufficient.
- 26:54I mean, the Baptist faith and message says the eternal triune
- 26:58God reveals himself to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit with
- 27:03distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature,
- 27:07essence or being. And then it goes right into the
- 27:10God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
- 27:13That's like 4 paragraphs on the Trinity.
- 27:16I don't think it's underdeveloped at all.
- 27:19And then the last thing I want to bring out is it says with the
- 27:23church throughout the ages, we will invariably find that our
- 27:29faith and message, no matter how well-intentioned, diverges from
- 27:35that once for all delivered to the Saints.
- 27:38So what he's saying in this article is, is not just the
- 27:42Baptist faith and message. Is it sufficient?
- 27:46He's saying that the Baptist faith and message without the
- 27:49creed diverges from the faith that was once for all delivered
- 27:54to the Saints. And I disagree with that
- 27:57wholeheartedly. You know, that the Baptist faith
- 27:59and message diverges us from the truth that was delivered to us
- 28:03in the word of God. I, I think it's, I think by
- 28:07putting, I agree with you, it's going to disrupt the flow.
- 28:10It's going to restate things that have already be been
- 28:13stated. You put the creed in there.
- 28:16It's just going to be a hodgepodge of copy paste
- 28:19redundancy. And I don't see the point.
- 28:23I don't see where it gets any more depth than the Baptist
- 28:27faith and message does. All it does is restate the same
- 28:30thing. Yeah, I agree 100%.
- 28:33And I think those are great points, valid points.
- 28:36And I'm, I'm excited, Brett, since my very first convention
- 28:41in Nashville back in 2021, I think it was, yeah, 2021.
- 28:47The, the banter. I believe that there needs to
- 28:52be, I'm an old school guy, man. I like to, to watch the old
- 28:56school senators and House of Representatives when they begin
- 29:00to debate a bill and they begin to go back and forth and
- 29:04they're, they're, they're calling on their party and
- 29:06they're calling on these things to be changed.
- 29:09I just love that side of it. I, I see it's a natural debate
- 29:13that that is good, that's healthy.
- 29:15But when it's all said and done, we, we get through where we're
- 29:18at. We make our appeal, we make our
- 29:21vote, we move forward with it. I just love that sense of debate
- 29:25and contesting back and forth. Some people are like, it's a
- 29:30bunch of just junk. And I just, I just, I, I find it
- 29:34fascinating. I think it's great.
- 29:36We need more of that decorum. We need more of that back and
- 29:39forth banter where we get to just voice where we're at.
- 29:44And, and sometimes, man, I'll go in and I'll be thinking one way
- 29:47and we'll, we'll have that debate.
- 29:48And I'm like, no, OK, I'm, I'm a different way now because I've
- 29:51heard so and so give their opinion and I've been able to
- 29:54hear this side of it. So I'm excited about it.
- 29:56I think it's going to be great. If all else fails, we're going
- 30:00to have a great time of fellowship.
- 30:01We're going to eat some fantastic food and man, we're
- 30:04going to have a great time together.
- 30:06And so I'm looking forward to it and looking forward to hanging
- 30:09out with you here in just a couple of days.
- 30:11You know, nobody else that I know of in my association is
- 30:16going to the convention. I think I'm the only one.
- 30:20And for them, you know, they've been in the SPC their whole
- 30:23lives. They've been in the ministry
- 30:2520-30 years. I mean, I, I can only assume, I
- 30:28guess they're just disinterested or over it.
- 30:30But me, I'm like, I'm new to the, you know, relatively new to
- 30:36the SPC. You know, this is really the 1st
- 30:40officially Southern Baptist church that I've pastored.
- 30:43I've been here two years. Last year was my first
- 30:46convention. I was unsure going in, but man,
- 30:50I went and I absolutely fell in love.
- 30:53And I was so thankful that you were there to kind of help guide
- 30:57me through the process because I was brand new.
- 31:01It's like a a new kid coming to a new school and you were
- 31:05showing me around campus the first day and you know, it was a
- 31:10great experience for me. I'm glad I'm going to get to go
- 31:13to the whole thing this year. I'm excited for it.
- 31:18I'm excited to participate. I'm excited to be a Southern
- 31:23Baptist and I'm excited to see what the Lord's going to do
- 31:27through this. Love it, can't wait.
- 31:29It's going to be exciting. Hope to see you there.
- 31:32Hope you'll join us. And we'll try to give some, some
- 31:35different we, we may actually do a little live thing on Facebook
- 31:39while we're there. And we're going to try to get
- 31:41our wives record an episode together while we're there as
- 31:44well. And man, we're just excited
- 31:46about what the Lord's doing in our lives and our churches and
- 31:50the convention. And ultimately it's again, how
- 31:53we can cooperate together and do more together than we can
- 31:56separate. And so if you ever have any
- 31:58questions, feel free to reach out to us.
- 32:00We may not have the answers, but we'd love to have a thought and
- 32:05be able to talk through those things.
- 32:07We hope you've enjoyed this last series of the In the Church
- 32:10series and talk through these different issues.
- 32:15We're gonna, we've wrapped all that up with missions and para
- 32:18church ministries. If you have a para church idea
- 32:22or I'm sorry, not a para church idea, an idea that would go
- 32:26along within the church. Maybe we didn't talk about it.
- 32:28Maybe we, we talked. We, we need to talk more about
- 32:30something that we didn't hit long enough.
- 32:33Shoot us a message, put a comment on our Facebook or mess
- 32:36or, or instant messages or however you feel like doing
- 32:39that. And we'll try to work that into
- 32:41our fall season, our second season of the year.
- 32:45And looking forward, we're going to be doing some crossover
- 32:47episodes with the RFP Network and just excited about the
- 32:52future of the podcast. We're here and we're going to
- 32:55here to stay and can't wait for what we've got going on.
- 32:59Brett, final thoughts before we close it down.
- 33:01Yes, there's 104 days of summer vacation and I want y'all to
- 33:06enjoy each and every one of them.
- 33:07Have a great summer. Yes, and until next time to God.
- 33:12Not the pastor. Be the glory.
- 33:15Found my new name. Found that good grace.
- 33:20Found that healing. And the tears fell down my face
- 33:24when I found my beginning that has no ending.
- 33:26Found that second chance. Found my best friend.
- 33:28Found my forgiveness. Found my happiness.
- 33:30I've been singing ever since. I found my freedom on me.
