- 0:00Third party testing for supplements is when a outside
- 0:03company or a third party is going to test a supplement under
- 0:07a certain type of regulation or certain type of, you know,
- 0:10certification process that is going to help with quality
- 0:13assurance for an athlete. Hello and welcome to the Eat
- 0:21More Carbs podcast. My name is Jenna Fischer and I'm
- 0:23here with my Co host Riley Baby. Before we jump into today's
- 0:26episode, this is just a quick reminder that you can apply to
- 0:30work with Jenna or myself and our concierge sports nutrition
- 0:33coaching program. Our one-on-one coaching program
- 0:35provides individualized support for athletes who are looking to
- 0:39increase their performance on the field and optimize their
- 0:41health. Off of it today we're going to
- 0:43be talking about supplements and 3rd party testing but first
- 0:46Riley, what's your high and low we're.
- 0:47Going to start with my low. I had this very interesting
- 0:50thing happened to me. I feel like lately I've been
- 0:53sharing a little too much on the podcast, but you know what?
- 0:56I feel like we're all friends here.
- 0:57Poor Jenna has had to hang out with me for the last six years.
- 1:00So just a little bit more awkward things for Jenna to have
- 1:03to talk to me about. I had this incident that has
- 1:05never happened to me before and it just, it was such an
- 1:09inconvenience to my life and it's just such a virtual
- 1:11problem. I got a pimple in my ear, like
- 1:15in my ear, and it was so like I couldn't get rid of it.
- 1:19It was there for like a week and a half and like that sounds so
- 1:21silly but I use headphones when I run and I couldn't put
- 1:24headphones in because of this pimple in my ear.
- 1:27I have had a pimple in my ear before and like they hurt.
- 1:31They hurt so bad. And like I remember when I got
- 1:33it and I was like, what is what is wrong with my ear?
- 1:35Like there's something wrong with my ear.
- 1:37So I had to have somebody else look at my ear and they were
- 1:38like, oh, that's a zit. And I was like, no, no,
- 1:41something's wrong because it just hurts and then it just goes
- 1:43away. It's so oh what a pain I am.
- 1:45So bad that you had this because I have been so self-conscious to
- 1:48share about this as my low on the podcast because I thought it
- 1:50was the only person that this happened to.
- 1:52Because you can't like, do anything to get rid of it.
- 1:55Like obviously to like put your finger in your ear.
- 1:57Like I feel like it's definitely a rarer place to get a pimple
- 2:01for sure, but I don't feel like you and I are the only two in
- 2:04the world who this has ever happened to.
- 2:06That's my love. It's very a very silly one.
- 2:08My high is that for the last like six months I have been
- 2:11trying to get Jenna to read this book and she finally read it and
- 2:15now I'm so excited because now I do not just have a one person
- 2:18book club. I made.
- 2:19Poor Jenna read this book as part of her employment to RBSN
- 2:23and I just wanted to share that I'm very excited that she read
- 2:25this book and that is my high. So thank you for, you know,
- 2:28partaking in my hobbies. No, I like book club and I liked
- 2:31the book, so it worked out good for everybody.
- 2:34And now everybody's going to want to know what the book is,
- 2:36but we're going to keep it to ourselves.
- 2:38Right now it is an internal RBSN.
- 2:40Book club it is, internal, Yes it is.
- 2:42And I'm going to continue to bring up this book for the next
- 2:44couple of months. If we get enough requests, we
- 2:46will share our book. But thank you Jenna for reading
- 2:49this book and joining the book. Clubs, thanks for recommending
- 2:51it. Jenna, what's your high and
- 2:52your? Love my high for the week is
- 2:54that I recently found out that one of my favorite ice cream
- 2:57shops, I believe they are only on like the West Coast.
- 3:00None of them have been in Arizona before.
- 3:03I learned that they opened one about 45 minutes from my house
- 3:06and I am going to go this weekend.
- 3:08The only other times that I've had it is when I've been out in
- 3:10California, but I am so excited to go get ice cream from this
- 3:13place that usually I can't get in Arizona.
- 3:15So that's my high is ice. Cream.
- 3:16Place it's salt and straw. Oh.
- 3:18My gosh, I salt and straw so much.
- 3:21You were the one who introduced me when we went out to
- 3:23California during our internship.
- 3:25That was the first time I've ever had salt and straw.
- 3:27Every time that like I go back to California, I get it again to
- 3:30include when I went out to run my marathon because it's so
- 3:32good. And I was so excited when I
- 3:34learned that they opened one in like kind of in the Phoenix
- 3:36area. So I'm going Oh my.
- 3:38Gosh, I'm so jealous. I'll have some for you.
- 3:41My low for the week actually happened this morning.
- 3:43It's a little just bit of a like an embarrassing situation.
- 3:46I was giving a presentation. It's kind of like an open
- 3:49presentation, I guess you could say, to some members of the RBSN
- 3:52boot camp. Not everybody can join live, but
- 3:54it's always just recorded. And I had some people join today
- 3:57and they let me know ahead of time that they might have to hop
- 3:59off early. And I was like, that's fine.
- 4:00Like no problem, we're gonna record it and you can watch it
- 4:02later. And as I'm going through the
- 4:03presentation, I'm in presenter mode.
- 4:05So I'm not really seeing the other participants in the call.
- 4:08It's just not what I'm seeing on my screen because I'm in
- 4:10presenter mode on Canva. And at one point I asked if
- 4:12there are any questions and it's recording.
- 4:14Everyone is going to watch this later.
- 4:16And no one was left in the call, so there's a recording of me
- 4:20asking an empty room if they had any questions.
- 4:25No one said anything and that's what clued me in.
- 4:28Oh, that is really good. Everybody watches those calls
- 4:31though, and you do such a great job at them.
- 4:33So they're so like super useful and that's I'm sure people do
- 4:36have lots of questions they just will not asking them live.
- 4:39Yes, because usually we stop and we ask questions along the way
- 4:42because most people do have questions or we want to discuss
- 4:44a certain topic and we were getting into one of the
- 4:46consensus statements. So I was like, oh, are there any
- 4:48questions now that we, we've reached into this chapter before
- 4:50we move on And and that's when I found.
- 4:53Out now, our Slack channel makes a lot more sense.
- 4:55Yes, yes, I'm everyone apologizing as to them having to
- 4:59hop off early. Everyone will watch it.
- 5:01Maybe other people will get a good laugh out of it like you
- 5:03and I did. I'm super excited to watch it.
- 5:05I was one of those people that was not able to attend today, so
- 5:07I am very excited. To watch it, one of the things
- 5:09that we did talk about or I talked about on the study called
- 5:12today was the consensus statement on supplements, which
- 5:15brings up a lot about third party testing and supplements in
- 5:18general, especially for athletic use.
- 5:20We're going to be talking a lot today about third party testing
- 5:23specifically when it comes to supplementation and athletes.
- 5:25And the reason why this is so important, especially for
- 5:28athletes, it's that supplements are not as highly regulated like
- 5:32pharmaceuticals are in the United States.
- 5:34So there's a lot of risk for cross contamination for
- 5:37ingredients showing up in supplements that maybe the
- 5:39athlete is not aware of and they end up taking a supplement that
- 5:42either causes harm or causes a positive drug test or something
- 5:47that actually is banned by their sport.
- 5:49So, so they're no longer able to compete.
- 5:50There's a number of reasons why it's really important for
- 5:53athletes to be very aware of the supplements that they're taking
- 5:56to run kind of a benefit analysis as far as if the risk
- 5:59is worth the reward of what the supplement actually offers.
- 6:02And there's a couple ways that registered dietitians can help
- 6:06athletes navigate that field. But one of the big things in the
- 6:09supplement industry right now is third party testing.
- 6:12So Riley, what is third party testing for supplements?
- 6:14Third party testing for supplements is when a outside
- 6:18company or a third party is going to test a supplement under
- 6:22a certain type of regulation or sort of type of, you know,
- 6:25certification process that is going to help with quality
- 6:28assurance for an athlete. Kind of following up with what
- 6:31you said, any product in the United States that has a
- 6:33supplement facts label versus a nutrition facts label is going
- 6:37to fall under this loose regulation when it comes to
- 6:41supplements. So just like Jenna had talked
- 6:43about, you know, supplements are really poorly regulated and any
- 6:46product that is labeled with a supplement facts panel is going
- 6:51to fall under this regulation. It's not going to be tested like
- 6:53medication, it's not going to be tested like food, and it's also
- 6:56not going to be tested like cosmetics.
- 6:58Those are the three kind of categories that fall under FDA
- 7:01regulations and FDA testing. So it is kind of the Wild West
- 7:05with supplements, but not all supplements are, you know,
- 7:08created poorly and are bad quality products.
- 7:12And that's why we really look at these third party testing
- 7:15organizations to help us kind of navigate the space and help find
- 7:19those quality products. When it comes to 3rd party
- 7:22testing, like what does that actually mean?
- 7:24There's a couple different like organizations and we can get
- 7:26into this as far as which ones we trust and which ones we're
- 7:29kind of looking for when we're analyzing supplements that an
- 7:31athlete might be taking. But what does that process
- 7:33involve? Like are they testing this
- 7:35monthly? Are they testing it batch by
- 7:36batch? Like what does that look like
- 7:38from an actual test standpoint? There's lots of different
- 7:41organizations out there that are testing these products from a
- 7:44third party testing perspective. The first kind of like baseline
- 7:49category that a lot of these companies are testing for is
- 7:52just a quality assurance process.
- 7:54So what does the production line look like?
- 7:56What does the factory, you know, qualities look like?
- 7:59And a lot of those times those are being compared to like the
- 8:02FDA and food product quality assured testings.
- 8:05So usually the base testing that is done on supplements is just
- 8:09quality assurance, right? Making sure that again, you have
- 8:11good quality products going in to the bottle or the container
- 8:16and then also just guaranteeing that what is listed on the fax
- 8:19panel is actually what's in the product.
- 8:21That's something that people don't realize that you can just
- 8:24slap a supplement fax panel onto a product and nobody's checking
- 8:28to make sure what's in the supplement is actually what's on
- 8:31the label. So that's the first type of
- 8:33testing and you're going to see that most commonly I feel like
- 8:35with like USP testing that's done a lot with like vitamins
- 8:38and minerals, you'll usually see like USP and that usually is
- 8:42just looking for that quality assurance piece.
- 8:44So when we're thinking of supplements, I think my mind
- 8:46immediately goes to like protein powder when I'm thinking of a
- 8:50supplement. But supplements include a lot of
- 8:52different things like you mentioned, supplements that are
- 8:54micronutrients or vitamins and minerals.
- 8:56Those all fall into the category of supplements.
- 8:59So if we're really wanting or if we really need to take a
- 9:02supplement, whether we're an athlete or not, what are the
- 9:04third party testing companies that you trust as a sports
- 9:07dietitian? So talked about like that USP,
- 9:09USP is usually like what I'm looking for when I'm looking for
- 9:12vitamins and minerals. USP though is not going to be
- 9:15checking for banned substances. So anything that's going to be
- 9:18on the prohibited list or certain organizations, you also
- 9:22have to look at those banned lists as well.
- 9:24Third party testing companies like NSF Certified for Sport or
- 9:29Informed Choice or Informed Sport are going to also test for
- 9:34those banned substances. So there's going to be that
- 9:36quality assurance piece tied in to their testing, but they're
- 9:40also going to take it a step above and make sure that those
- 9:42products are going to be free from any type of banned
- 9:45substance. So those are the two most
- 9:47common, I guess you could say three most common certifications
- 9:51from a third party perspective. You also asked earlier to a
- 9:54little bit more about like third party certifications.
- 9:56And I think that's a really important point to bring up
- 9:59because a lot of companies will claim that they do their own
- 10:03certifications in house and there's no standard for that.
- 10:07So you have to look at these reputable brands like this NSF
- 10:11Certified for Sport. NSF does a ton of different
- 10:14certifications. I mean, especially we've seen
- 10:16this a ton in the field of dietetics, but there's so many
- 10:19different NSF certifications out there that is a really well
- 10:22known company. And then also the informed
- 10:24Sport, Informed Choice like we just mentioned, that is going to
- 10:28be a reputable brand as well. So when we see these third party
- 10:31testing brands listed on a supplement label, is it
- 10:34reasonable to a assume, I guess that this is something that an
- 10:37athlete could be safe to take then?
- 10:39It is going to provide a level of safety, but there's no
- 10:41guarantee and that is something that is really important that
- 10:44you have to understand as an athlete is just these products
- 10:47are thoroughly tested, but you always have to assume their
- 10:51risk. With the three most common types
- 10:53of testing that we're looking for in athletes or the three
- 10:55most common brands. We have the NSS Certified for
- 10:58sport. That is going to be your highest
- 11:00level of testing as well as your informed sport.
- 11:03Every single batch is going to be tested for the banned
- 11:06substances, and from the equality assurance standpoint,
- 11:09Informed Choice is a little bit more of a popular testing option
- 11:13for a lot of supplements because it's cheaper.
- 11:16Because they're not going to test batches, they test random
- 11:19products and I'm simplifying all of their testing requirements.
- 11:22You can definitely go to these websites and check out more.
- 11:25So how do you know then if a supplement has been third party
- 11:27tested? These third party testing
- 11:30certifications cost money. Because of that, companies are
- 11:33going to make sure that you know that they're going to have that
- 11:36testing done on their products. So they're definitely going to
- 11:39be putting the label on their products.
- 11:41So that's going to be one of the easiest ways to check if your
- 11:45product has been third party tested by one of these
- 11:47organizations. If you can't find the label on
- 11:51the product, you can also go to these companies websites and you
- 11:54can type in that product. But something that is really
- 11:56important is you have to make sure that you're also typing in
- 11:59like the batch for products, especially for these MSFS
- 12:02Certified for Sport or the informed sport products, because
- 12:05you want to ensure that the batch has been cleared from a
- 12:09compliance standpoint. There's also documentation
- 12:11online too, if you really want to look into it, unlike detailed
- 12:15reports about the actual testing process and the results for that
- 12:18certification that that supplement has.
- 12:20And then if in doubt and you have questions about whether or
- 12:23not it's actually been third party tested, you can always
- 12:26reach out to the manufacturer Like they, if you send them
- 12:29exactly what you're curious about, your batch number, the
- 12:32exact thing that you're taking, they'll be able to provide those
- 12:34details for you. And then lastly, I think one of
- 12:36the biggest things is that always check with a sports
- 12:39dietitian, especially if you are someone who's regularly involved
- 12:41in competitive sports to go over supplements with you, whether
- 12:45that be some type of a supplement review.
- 12:47Riley and I are never encouraging blanket
- 12:49supplementation of anything, regardless of a micronutrient,
- 12:52vitamin and mineral or something that is directly targeted at
- 12:56sports performance and enhancement or anything like
- 12:58that. We're looking at the overall
- 13:00fueling plan of an athlete before recommending any type of
- 13:03supplementation, and doing so with your sports dietitian is
- 13:06probably a good idea as well because any type of
- 13:08supplementation can be dangerous and I just.
- 13:10Have two more quick points to add on top of that too.
- 13:13Why it is really important to work with a sports dietitian on
- 13:16this because yes, these third party testing companies provide
- 13:20a level of safety when it comes to these products, but you also
- 13:23have to remember that they're testing against the WADA band
- 13:27list and your organization, their band or their prohibited
- 13:31list might be a little bit different.
- 13:32A really common example of this is caffeine because at the IOC
- 13:36level, at the WADA level, caffeine is not a banned
- 13:39substance. But if you are an NCAA athlete,
- 13:42taking caffeine and certain doses is going to be banned and
- 13:47prohibited. So you do have to be careful
- 13:49because if you are, you know, following the NSF certified for
- 13:51sport labeling, then if a product has, you know, high
- 13:55doses of caffeine and it's going to pass that labeling, but it's
- 13:58not going to necessarily align with your organization.
- 14:01And working with a sports dietitian can help navigate
- 14:04that. Additionally, just because of
- 14:05product is safe doesn't mean it's actually effective and
- 14:08present in the effective dose that you need as an athlete.
- 14:12Just because a product doesn't contain banned substances
- 14:14doesn't mean that it's actually going to help with your
- 14:16performance. Example, Jenna talked about
- 14:18protein powder. That's one of the most common
- 14:20products out there. You don't need to necessarily
- 14:22take protein powder if you're meeting your protein needs.
- 14:25So even if your protein powder is safe, it's not going to
- 14:28necessarily be effective if you're feeling the foundation is
- 14:31already. Up to par.
