- 1:45Speaker 6: good morning, Here we go. The march continues. I hope
- 1:50Speaker 6: that all of you consumed at least two or three
- 1:52Speaker 6: hours of exhibition NFL football over the weekend, and I
- 2:00Speaker 6: did not, So I do have to tell you about
- 2:03Speaker 6: my weekend here in a minute, though. But it's been
- 2:06Speaker 6: a minute since we've been on the air. We were
- 2:09Speaker 6: on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday last week and Thursday Friday. We
- 2:15Speaker 6: took a trip. So a couple of different ways that
- 2:17Speaker 6: you can get in touch with us. The Golden Moon
- 2:21Speaker 6: Casino text line, Let's get an out of bounds roll
- 2:25Speaker 6: call going? The text line is six one eight eight, five,
- 2:30Speaker 6: three seven seven six six one eight eight five three
- 2:35Speaker 6: seven seven.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Six Or do I not currently have a pulse?
- 2:41Speaker 6: I think Jackson Meadows is asking himself that on a Monday,
- 2:44Speaker 6: He's like, did I really have to get out of
- 2:46Speaker 6: bed and do this? And uh, this is what he
- 2:50Speaker 6: was thinking on the way up fifty five?
- 2:53Speaker 1: Or do I not currently have a pulse?
- 2:55Speaker 6: The text line six eight eight, five, three, seven, seven
- 3:00Speaker 6: and six. We need an out of bounds role call?
- 3:02Speaker 6: How are you listening? Where are you listening from, and
- 3:05Speaker 6: yes we're gonna talk skip Bertman passing away legendary LSU
- 3:10Speaker 6: baseball coach Jayden Daniels and the the riff between Jaden
- 3:17Speaker 6: and LSU now and the fact that they're letting a
- 3:21Speaker 6: dB where number five and how that all came about. Well,
- 3:26Speaker 6: just say, it's crazy that LSU is the two lead
- 3:29Speaker 6: stories in a state with two SEC teams. But and
- 3:32Speaker 6: there's plenty to get to with with ole Miss football
- 3:34Speaker 6: and Misissippi State football too. But skip Bertman apps, you know,
- 3:39Speaker 6: best coach in the history of the SEC by million
- 3:41Speaker 6: miles in baseball. And this is what you know. This
- 3:47Speaker 6: is what skip Bertman would say. That's it right there.
- 3:51Speaker 6: I mean he believed in winning championships. We need an
- 3:55Speaker 6: out of bounds role call again, how are you listening?
- 3:59Speaker 6: Where you listening from? Hopefully you're in the shower or something. Uh,
- 4:03Speaker 6: maybe with your significant other. But the text line six
- 4:06Speaker 6: oh one eight eight five three seven seven six find
- 4:12Speaker 6: us on X at bow bounds.
- 4:14Speaker 1: That's Alabama arrogance Vanderbilt trophy cap.
- 4:17Speaker 6: And the michelob Ultra collar line is six oh one
- 4:21Speaker 6: seven zero seven thirty seven fifty. So yeah, I had
- 4:28Speaker 6: a good trip to the beach. We went to Destin
- 4:30Speaker 6: for a couple of days. Wendy, Uh, Wendy made me
- 4:33Speaker 6: do it. She was like, you didn't take a vacation
- 4:35Speaker 6: all summer, Uh, going to Washington, DC and moving moving
- 4:39Speaker 6: a kid, moving another kid out of state. Not that
- 4:43Speaker 6: I'm doing more than you, but you know, just didn't
- 4:46Speaker 6: get to maybe get a little R and R before
- 4:48Speaker 6: Jackson and I go. I mean, it's really just get
- 4:53Speaker 6: on the four thousand pound bull here next week and uh,
- 4:58Speaker 6: all the way until you know, December twentieth, which is
- 5:01Speaker 6: fun too. I mean, it's going to be such a
- 5:03Speaker 6: wild ride, and we don't know what's going to play
- 5:06Speaker 6: out and who's going to win, and who's going to
- 5:10Speaker 6: be good and who's gonna not gonna be good. Well,
- 5:13Speaker 6: maybe we do know some teams that are not going
- 5:16Speaker 6: to be good, but there's going to be so much
- 5:18Speaker 6: up and down. I think the league's going to be
- 5:19Speaker 6: even more watered down than it has been the last
- 5:22Speaker 6: two years. And we've never seen anything like this in
- 5:24Speaker 6: the modern era. So I can't wait. I think Saturdays
- 5:28Speaker 6: are going to give you pandemonium. We've claimed that in
- 5:32Speaker 6: college football but really didn't have that right. For decades,
- 5:36Speaker 6: you just had the best teams the best teams most
- 5:38Speaker 6: of the time. And now I don't know if you
- 5:41Speaker 6: have twenty teams that can win it. I mean Indiana
- 5:44Speaker 6: won it last year with the composite recruiting in the
- 5:48Speaker 6: mid thirties. What they didn't spend near as much as
- 5:53Speaker 6: other teams. But it's all about money in nil where
- 5:58Speaker 6: is it? I mean, yes, that is that is a
- 6:00Speaker 6: piece of the puzzle. Without a doubt. They didn't come
- 6:03Speaker 6: close to spending as much money as other teams. Anyway,
- 6:07Speaker 6: back to my trip, because we're about to get on
- 6:11Speaker 6: this jet and fly and have fun, we went to
- 6:17Speaker 6: the beach. So we went to Deston. I've told this
- 6:20Speaker 6: story like seven years eight years ago. You know, you
- 6:24Speaker 6: go through different stages and phases, so you got you
- 6:28Speaker 6: don't have to, but you do. First week with your kids,
- 6:32Speaker 6: and first week went from holiday is when I was
- 6:35Speaker 6: a kid to thirty a with my kids. And I
- 6:38Speaker 6: had one of my two kids who just fell in
- 6:40Speaker 6: love with it. You know, Wilkes thought was the greatest
- 6:43Speaker 6: thing ever Elle Hall take it or leave it, And
- 6:46Speaker 6: so we made that run and thirty as amazing. First
- 6:50Speaker 6: week it's not, but thirty aays amazing. And so then
- 6:55Speaker 6: we started going back to Deston Proper or whatever, right
- 7:00Speaker 6: old Deston and fell in love with that. And so
- 7:04Speaker 6: we went down, stayed right there by rus Chris's and
- 7:09Speaker 6: went twice. Had a great time the East Bar. It's
- 7:15Speaker 6: like a carnival on steroids. So many people from so
- 7:19Speaker 6: many you know, walks of life. It's just it's one
- 7:22Speaker 6: of the greatest people watching places in the in the southeast.
- 7:28Speaker 6: But yeah, so we hit Destined for for a few
- 7:31Speaker 6: days it y'all, and I wish everybody has amazing trips.
- 7:38Speaker 6: But the weather was great. We had an unbelievable breeze
- 7:42Speaker 6: off off the Gulf. The water was blue green, no jellyfish,
- 7:48Speaker 6: no seaweed. It was incredible. And there was eighty plus
- 7:53Speaker 6: percent less people than just a couple of weeks ago.
- 7:56Speaker 6: It was fabulous. I mean, you know, it was. It
- 8:01Speaker 6: was a ton of fun. So oh, we found a
- 8:03Speaker 6: place called Chow Pizza. So it has the best reviews
- 8:09Speaker 6: in DestinE Proper, none of the pizza up and Down
- 8:14Speaker 6: thirty it's got to be the best pizza in that
- 8:16Speaker 6: in that will House of Destines and Destined thirty eight. Anyway,
- 8:20Speaker 6: we found it and they make everything fresh, like every
- 8:24Speaker 6: pizza's made fresh there on site. I mean obviously at
- 8:30Speaker 6: the restaurant, but with I mean they make their own
- 8:33Speaker 6: red sauce.
- 8:34Speaker 1: It was phenomenal.
- 8:37Speaker 6: As someone with Italian blood and who's part of the mafia, Jackson,
- 8:41Speaker 6: you would have loved it. By the way, I sent
- 8:43Speaker 6: you a gift card from Taste Italian Kitchen yesterday, so yeah,
- 8:47Speaker 6: we catch it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Okay, good.
- 8:49Speaker 6: I wanted you to get something, whether it was the
- 8:52Speaker 6: wood fired pizza from Taste, or the bolon aise or
- 8:55Speaker 6: the shrimp scampy or the calamari or the oh the
- 8:57Speaker 6: fried ravioli.
- 8:58Speaker 1: God.
- 9:00Speaker 6: Anyway, their big outdoor area is opening today. I will
- 9:04Speaker 6: be there at four o'clock. We hope to see you.
- 9:07Speaker 6: That mega meg. I'm not gonna say what they spent,
- 9:10Speaker 6: but there's nothing like it in the state of Mississippi.
- 9:12Speaker 6: It's basically another restaurant and bar outside connected to Taste
- 9:16Speaker 6: Italian Kitchen and the Renaissance. It opens this afternoon. Are
- 9:19Speaker 6: we taking a break? Okay, I'll continue running my mouth
- 9:23Speaker 6: about a combination of football and the amazing trip that
- 9:26Speaker 6: Wendy and I had.
- 9:29Speaker 1: We just had a great time.
- 9:32Speaker 6: I mean we were able to get our chairs and
- 9:34Speaker 6: our umbrell and nobody was beside us.
- 9:36Speaker 1: It was incredible, you know, and it's still August like,
- 9:43Speaker 1: I'm surprised it was. It was great.
- 9:45Speaker 6: And you know something, I'll tell you something else that
- 9:47Speaker 6: I think will surprise you on the other side. Good morning,
- 9:50Speaker 6: welcome in. We're powered by Pearl River Resort.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Lord.
- 10:12Speaker 5: What's the big boy, guys, I don't have time for
- 10:34Speaker 5: that speculation.
- 10:37Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm not moving to Destin yet. Good morning, Welcome
- 10:40Speaker 6: into the Out of Bounds Show ESPN one oh five nine.
- 10:45Speaker 1: The Zone Oh, brought.
- 10:48Speaker 6: To you by all the crazy people at the East
- 10:50Speaker 6: Bar at Rusy Chris's.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And there's just not a it's just wild. It's wild.
- 10:59Speaker 6: It's Indian and I just had a great time and
- 11:02Speaker 6: laughed and.
- 11:04Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 11:06Speaker 5: I mean, that's a joke to me.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Well me too, but it's crazy, absolutely crazy, and I
- 11:13Speaker 1: love it. You know.
- 11:14Speaker 6: I was taking a walk one morning down the beach
- 11:20Speaker 6: and the back porch was, you know, one hundred yards
- 11:25Speaker 6: from us, maybe two hundred. I'd never thought about it,
- 11:29Speaker 6: you know. When I started going as a kid, you
- 11:31Speaker 6: just went to places. I mean, right, you don't you
- 11:34Speaker 6: didn't ever think when you're a kid, you just you
- 11:36Speaker 6: get you get taken there by your parents or friends' parents.
- 11:42Speaker 6: Do you realize that the back Porch opened in nineteen
- 11:45Speaker 6: seventy four. Can you imagine how desolate or just rustic
- 11:53Speaker 6: and rural destined was I mean, hell, it was like
- 11:55Speaker 6: that in the eighties when we thought it was big
- 11:58Speaker 6: living and big pimping. But you know, I mean we
- 12:01Speaker 6: thought Holiday I was the Ritz Carlton, but I mean
- 12:04Speaker 6: it was just the redneck rivie era, And so can
- 12:08Speaker 6: you imagine what that family thought, Hey, we're going to
- 12:13Speaker 6: hang a shingle here in nineteen seventy four.
- 12:17Speaker 1: We're gonna hang a shingle.
- 12:18Speaker 6: There's not one condo around us, no hotels, and we're
- 12:24Speaker 6: going to see how this bad boy plays out. Now,
- 12:29Speaker 6: they eventually sold, but and it's still packed. So I
- 12:33Speaker 6: dove in there one afternoon. You know, I've told you
- 12:35Speaker 6: all this. You know, I have to talk to myself
- 12:38Speaker 6: and walk around when he's like, why don't you go
- 12:40Speaker 6: walk or do something, meet somebody, cause she's just fine,
- 12:44Speaker 6: you know, underneath the umbrella outside of it, you know,
- 12:46Speaker 6: laying out and uh, and so one afternoon I go
- 12:53Speaker 6: down there and I just kind of wanted to see
- 12:56Speaker 6: what that was like. And that's a total s show
- 12:58Speaker 6: too about people Watch. So I just sat at the bar,
- 13:01Speaker 6: had a michelob ultra. You can see, you know, you
- 13:03Speaker 6: can almost touch the ocean, and uh, that place is
- 13:07Speaker 6: still doing in Like there were eighty percent less people
- 13:14Speaker 6: there this past week weekend when we were there. Can
- 13:20Speaker 6: you imagine what that was like just three, five, six,
- 13:22Speaker 6: seven weeks ago. I mean the place was busy. I
- 13:26Speaker 6: mean it wasn't not every table was taken like it
- 13:28Speaker 6: would be like on July twelfth or June fifteenth.
- 13:32Speaker 1: But holy Mary Olza go aleeah. I had fun. We
- 13:37Speaker 1: had a great time.
- 13:40Speaker 6: But I do for those of you who either have
- 13:43Speaker 6: a place or go down there during the fall, and
- 13:45Speaker 6: I know October is the best month by far and away,
- 13:51Speaker 6: and then a lot of times that bleeds into November.
- 13:53Speaker 6: But I would I would reckon. I would I recommend
- 13:57Speaker 6: chow pizza. I know that sounds crazy maybe in DestinE,
- 13:59Speaker 6: but it's fabulous. Oh we gotta what do we get
- 14:03Speaker 6: from there? We got the pizza, I got a tear
- 14:07Speaker 6: my suit. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, that was good too.
- 14:10Speaker 6: You'd have been proud of me.
- 14:11Speaker 1: This place looks wow, it looks so good. Chow.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Yeah, dude, it's it's in a strip mall, which doesn't
- 14:19Speaker 6: make sense. It's like Big Fish at Orange Beach. It
- 14:21Speaker 6: didn't make sense that it's good, right, Okay, but when
- 14:24Speaker 6: you do find something like that, you're like, you walk
- 14:28Speaker 6: in it's it's it's.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Right across the street from Ruce Christmas.
- 14:32Speaker 6: Okay, so you could get a golf club out and
- 14:34Speaker 6: hit a nine iron to it. It's really really cool.
- 14:41Speaker 6: But the pe it's everything's fresh, it's so it's just great.
- 14:44Speaker 1: It's fabulous. One of the best pizzas I've ever had
- 14:47Speaker 1: in my life. Really, Yes, yes, pizzas of musk when
- 14:52Speaker 1: you're at the Beach.
- 14:53Speaker 6: I don't know why that is. I mean I I
- 14:56Speaker 6: don't I don't know why that is it is. But
- 14:59Speaker 6: I mean not well, you know, Domino's Pub, John's or
- 15:03Speaker 6: the other one, uh whatever, pizza hut, but uh not
- 15:07Speaker 6: that I haven't eaten a million of those slices. But man,
- 15:12Speaker 6: it was good and we had a great time. Yes
- 15:17Speaker 6: it was. And then the the the sandbar was was perfect.
- 15:22Speaker 6: It was just you know, oh you know what I
- 15:24Speaker 6: was going to tell you that we didn't see like that.
- 15:27Speaker 6: You always, I don't know what was going on.
- 15:29Speaker 1: This is weird.
- 15:31Speaker 6: I didn't see a bunch of SEC teams REP being repped.
- 15:36Speaker 6: You're you always see that in Orange Beach, Destin Sand
- 15:39Speaker 6: Destin thirty eight always you always see m SU all
- 15:44Speaker 6: Miss Auburn, Obama, LSU, among others. I did not see
- 15:49Speaker 6: SEC gear. It was kind of weird. Maybe they're just
- 15:53Speaker 6: and I didn't see. It's not like I saw Big
- 15:55Speaker 6: ten gear or a CC now I did. I do
- 15:59Speaker 6: know this. There were still some kids there and parents. Okay,
- 16:04Speaker 6: like you know, there were kids that were four, six, eight.
- 16:07Speaker 6: I don't know what state they were tied to to
- 16:10Speaker 6: not because they're obviously not in school yet. Okay, we
- 16:14Speaker 6: went back, you know, I think most of the surrounding
- 16:17Speaker 6: states went back. But again I don't keep up with
- 16:19Speaker 6: anymore because I don't have anybody in K through twelve
- 16:22Speaker 6: and so on. But I don't I don't know who
- 16:28Speaker 6: that like, where they're from. But they were having a
- 16:32Speaker 6: good time, so it was it was all good. But
- 16:35Speaker 6: I'm going to tell you, man, when you can go
- 16:37Speaker 6: to the beach and get chairs and an umbrella and
- 16:40Speaker 6: nobody's near you. It's a beautiful thing, it really is.
- 16:45Speaker 6: So we stayed in a great place and I'm I've
- 16:49Speaker 6: always been in love with it. But I'm all in
- 16:52Speaker 6: on destin proper now when our friends go to thirty
- 16:56Speaker 6: eight or wherever, I'm good, but I'm in. But man,
- 17:00Speaker 6: it's it's just something about it. I almost thought about
- 17:04Speaker 6: walking all the way from the back porch to Holiday Al,
- 17:09Speaker 6: but that's a hike, just to see if I could
- 17:12Speaker 6: do it. But I would have needed to like uh,
- 17:16Speaker 6: water bottle up and like I didn't have any kind
- 17:19Speaker 6: of I didn't pack like that. I mean, I knew
- 17:21Speaker 6: I was going to be having michelob Alter's and you
- 17:25Speaker 6: know whatever apparol sprints is or whatever the hell they
- 17:28Speaker 6: had at the sandbar right beside us. But you know,
- 17:32Speaker 6: Wendy's parents would walk it every morning her growing up,
- 17:36Speaker 6: from Holiday Al down to the back porch at breakfast
- 17:39Speaker 6: in back right, they did did it for years. That's
- 17:42Speaker 6: some serious exercise. That's some exercise because you're walking in
- 17:45Speaker 6: the sand. Yeah, I mean that's three miles round through okay,
- 17:49Speaker 6: in the sand, which is different than just walking on
- 17:53Speaker 6: no doubt, a sidewalk. Yeah, yeah, way harder. Yeah, so
- 17:59Speaker 6: I'd debated it, but I didn't. I was in debation.
- 18:04Speaker 6: And then not in debation. That was from somebody I
- 18:07Speaker 6: knew in college. I say that all the time. This
- 18:10Speaker 6: guy would be in debation on where he was going
- 18:13Speaker 6: to go for a happy hour, and that awesome. He
- 18:16Speaker 6: made up a word, which I'm okay with, good word,
- 18:20Speaker 6: and he was in debation on where he was going
- 18:23Speaker 6: to go to happy hour?
- 18:25Speaker 1: So did he make the right choice?
- 18:28Speaker 4: Oh?
- 18:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Well is there really a bad all?
- 18:31Speaker 2: Right?
- 18:31Speaker 6: So I think about this when you and I were
- 18:33Speaker 6: in college, I mean, not the same time, But is
- 18:36Speaker 6: there is there anything better than meet and buddies for
- 18:39Speaker 6: a happy hour in an sec town when you when
- 18:42Speaker 6: you go to that school Mississippi State, Ole, miss wherever?
- 18:45Speaker 6: Is there anything better than finding your spot with an
- 18:48Speaker 6: ice cold beer, knowing that's some fried cheese or fried
- 18:51Speaker 6: pickles or whatever, or some nachos are on the way.
- 18:55Speaker 1: It's a pretty good feel. I mean, the good times
- 18:56Speaker 1: are rolling, they are, yeah, until they roll a little
- 18:59Speaker 1: too long.
- 18:59Speaker 6: And well I get that. I get that. That's what
- 19:04Speaker 6: it's for, right, no doubt about it. Who created the
- 19:10Speaker 6: concept of happy Hour. Well, we can find that out
- 19:13Speaker 6: and we owe them. So did that start? Do we
- 19:15Speaker 6: think that started in Europe? Or did it start in America?
- 19:20Speaker 6: Or did it start? I think we're taking a break.
- 19:26Speaker 6: That theme must be messed up.
- 19:29Speaker 1: All right.
- 19:29Speaker 6: We're live in the Bank Plus Studio. We're powered by
- 19:32Speaker 6: Independent Roofing Systems. They're number one in the commercial and
- 19:34Speaker 6: industrial roofing space. Jaden Daniel's story wild rip to skip Bertman.
- 19:43Speaker 6: We will discuss Ben McDonald's post over the weekend. That'll
- 19:49Speaker 6: put water in your eyes if Drew Brees's speech did
- 19:53Speaker 6: the Ben McDonald post on Skip Bertman? Damn sure will
- 19:56Speaker 6: We'll discuss on the other side.
- 20:31Speaker 1: That's Alabama arrogance, Vanderbilt Trophy Captain Wow, good morning.
- 20:44Speaker 6: We are the Out of Bound Show ESPN one oh
- 20:48Speaker 6: five nine The Zone and uh let's give away. Let's
- 20:54Speaker 6: give away four four packs of Ole Miss and Mississippi
- 20:58Speaker 6: State cigars brought to you by the Bocock Brothers. You
- 21:04Speaker 6: know they're great cigars. They're branded Mississippi State and Old Miss.
- 21:07Speaker 6: The boxes, everything of the rapper, the whole thing they're
- 21:12Speaker 6: they're in. They're good premium Honduran cigars. So we'll do
- 21:16Speaker 6: this around. And I know I'm about to talk about
- 21:20Speaker 6: a big time figure outside of the state of Mississippi,
- 21:24Speaker 6: but he was tied in to the state because LSU
- 21:28Speaker 6: played Mississippi State and Old Miss all the time. And
- 21:32Speaker 6: in skip Bertman, you know, was the architect of UH,
- 21:36Speaker 6: the one and only dynasty in SEC baseball. I guess
- 21:40Speaker 6: Corbin came close in the modern era, or you could
- 21:44Speaker 6: argue did and a much more difficult time. Not taking
- 21:48Speaker 6: anything away from the late great UH skip Bertman out
- 21:53Speaker 6: of LSU, but we need to give away four four
- 21:56Speaker 6: packs of Bocock brother cigars, Old Miss and Mississippi State.
- 21:59Speaker 6: So on the out of bounds roll call, I need
- 22:02Speaker 6: to hear from you. Here's how you enter to win
- 22:04Speaker 6: on the text line six oh one eight eight five
- 22:08Speaker 6: three seven seven six. I'd like to know how you're
- 22:11Speaker 6: listening either radio one oh five nine the zone or
- 22:16Speaker 6: streaming on the out of bounds radio app or the
- 22:19Speaker 6: Zone one oh five nine dot com. Where are you
- 22:22Speaker 6: listening from and UH? And then you can throw in
- 22:27Speaker 6: your thoughts on skip Bertman, your team's football fall report,
- 22:33Speaker 6: or the Jaden Daniels LSU divorce in which we're also
- 22:39Speaker 6: going to cover a little bit later, probably in the
- 22:43Speaker 6: in the segment, Tom Lougan Bill will stop by at
- 22:45Speaker 6: eight thirty today and Nathan McCarty with Briarwood Wine and
- 22:48Speaker 6: Spirits will bring in the Elijah Craig beryl pick that
- 22:52Speaker 6: hit the market over the weekend. We picked it out
- 22:55Speaker 6: several months ago, not the one we just did a
- 22:58Speaker 6: few weeks ago, right with Taste Italian. This we did
- 23:01Speaker 6: several months ago. It hit the shelves at Briarwood Wind
- 23:05Speaker 6: and Spirits. So the Elijah Craig barrel pick is uh
- 23:09Speaker 6: is here and we'll taste it in the third hour
- 23:11Speaker 6: and talk about it. It's perfect just in time for
- 23:15Speaker 6: football season and as you know, cooler weather not right now,
- 23:19Speaker 6: but cooler weather will be here at some point, thank you.
- 23:24Speaker 1: You know what. But that's how you enter.
- 23:25Speaker 6: And you could win a four pack of you get
- 23:28Speaker 6: to pick well, depending on where you are in the
- 23:31Speaker 6: pecking order on this or Mississippi State branded Bocock Brother Cigars.
- 23:37Speaker 1: We'll throw in an out.
- 23:38Speaker 6: Of bounds hat and some kind of piece of barswag
- 23:42Speaker 6: from Elijah Craig. Ritito's all right, So that's the out
- 23:46Speaker 6: of bounds prize.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Pack this morning.
- 23:48Speaker 6: We want to hear from you on the text line
- 23:50Speaker 6: six oh one eight eight five three seven seven six.
- 23:54Speaker 6: So great trip to Deston right before football seed and
- 24:01Speaker 6: that was a ton of fun. I'll continue to talk
- 24:03Speaker 6: about that. I've always been in love with Destin proper,
- 24:08Speaker 6: but even more so now. It's just fantastic. And the
- 24:12Speaker 6: people watching and everything else is great. And I'll be honest,
- 24:15Speaker 6: I mean, when you get to go down just the
- 24:18Speaker 6: two of you, that's nice. You don't have to worry
- 24:21Speaker 6: about anything anybody. Sometimes you do your own thing, you know,
- 24:26Speaker 6: but you have to carry a bunch of stuff to
- 24:28Speaker 6: the beach. You don't have to do this or that.
- 24:30Speaker 6: You eat when you want, you have what you want
- 24:32Speaker 6: and so on. So it was fabulous and the weather
- 24:35Speaker 6: was great too. I hope you've had a good trip
- 24:37Speaker 6: or two or three over the summer. And now we
- 24:40Speaker 6: get ready for high school football, college football and the NFL.
- 24:44Speaker 6: Now we're going to talk a little college baseball here
- 24:47Speaker 6: for a second.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I grew up on it, so did some of you.
- 24:50Speaker 6: I you know, my first memories are nineteen eighty eighty
- 24:53Speaker 6: one Bruce Kastoria before skip Bertman had LSU tuned up
- 24:57Speaker 6: Ron Polk had Mississippi State tuned up, and that's where,
- 25:02Speaker 6: you know, in the seventies the leftfield Lounge or whatever,
- 25:05Speaker 6: foul pole to foul pole was born and paulk got
- 25:09Speaker 6: rolling and so on, and then skip Bertman takes the
- 25:14Speaker 6: job at LSU. Of course, Mike Bianco was skip Bertman's catcher,
- 25:18Speaker 6: along with Ben McDonald being the pitcher on that team
- 25:21Speaker 6: or teams. And Mike Bianco has been in Mississippi at
- 25:25Speaker 6: Ole Miss. It feels like fifty years and we feel
- 25:27Speaker 6: like he's going to outlive us all. And yeah, three
- 25:30Speaker 6: generations from now, Mike Bianco will still be the head
- 25:32Speaker 6: baseball coach at Ole Miss and Elon may be living,
- 25:37Speaker 6: you know, on Mars, but Mike will be in Oxford
- 25:41Speaker 6: at Swasey coaching baseball. Former LSU catcher, but Bertman was
- 25:46Speaker 6: the architect of a dynasty. He took over LSU baseball
- 25:49Speaker 6: in nineteen eighty four and he turned it into a
- 25:51Speaker 6: national powerhouse. And it's the only dynasty in SEC baseball.
- 25:57Speaker 6: He did it through, you know, sheer will and guts
- 26:02Speaker 6: and determination, and LSU was not the LSU of today,
- 26:07Speaker 6: the absolute and total monster of a top five athletic department,
- 26:11Speaker 6: program and brand and everything that's happened to them the
- 26:14Speaker 6: last twenty five years since Sabing set foot on campus,
- 26:17Speaker 6: and all the great players that they put in the
- 26:19Speaker 6: NFL and well even NBA, but MLB too, And so
- 26:25Speaker 6: he was the architect with national titles in nineteen ninety one,
- 26:29Speaker 6: ninety three, ninety six, ninety seven. In two thousand eleven
- 26:39Speaker 6: College World Series appearances, he was eight hundred and seventy
- 26:43Speaker 6: and three point thirty. Yeah, and a winning percentage in Omahall.
- 26:51Speaker 6: That's still the best in NCAA tournament history.
- 26:55Speaker 1: He is a legend.
- 26:57Speaker 6: He had no budget nineteen eighty four, eighty six, eighty eight,
- 27:00Speaker 6: ninety two, ninety four. We're gonna drop some of this
- 27:03Speaker 6: audio coming up. It's pretty funny. He had a hell
- 27:06Speaker 6: of a wit about him, super smart, believed in self actualization.
- 27:10Speaker 6: He believed that if you visualized it, talked about it,
- 27:13Speaker 6: manifested it, then you got there. He talked about it
- 27:16Speaker 6: all the time. That's all he talked. We're here to
- 27:18Speaker 6: win national championships. We're here to go to Omahall. We're
- 27:21Speaker 6: here to go to Omahall and win games. We are
- 27:25Speaker 6: the out of bound show ESPN one oh five nine
- 27:27Speaker 6: of the zone. We're brought to you by Farm Bureau Insurance.
- 27:30Speaker 6: Bundle your auto and home and save with your local
- 27:33Speaker 6: Farm Bureau Insurance agent. Auto Home Life powered by Farm
- 27:37Speaker 6: Bureau Insurance any of the eighty two counties in the
- 27:40Speaker 6: state of Mississippi. You can find your local Farm Bureau
- 27:44Speaker 6: Insurance agent. Go with the home team. As Jake Mangham
- 27:48Speaker 6: likes to tell us, so he basically he took he
- 27:53Speaker 6: had he knew he was a promoter too, okay, and
- 27:58Speaker 6: Bertman understood the marketing side of it and how important
- 28:03Speaker 6: it was. And then he went from dugout to athletic director,
- 28:09Speaker 6: which was crazy, and really did a good job there.
- 28:17Speaker 6: He was a builder of LSU Baseball and along with
- 28:21Speaker 6: Saban on the reboot LSU athletics in the modern era.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Is that fair?
- 28:28Speaker 6: And so when you know Jo Dene Senior made the
- 28:32Speaker 6: higher but Bertman literally five minutes later or something was
- 28:35Speaker 6: the athletic director and from there they really connected. Bertman
- 28:44Speaker 6: multi you know National championships, Saban, you know the drill.
- 28:49Speaker 6: And it's too many players to list. For as far
- 28:54Speaker 6: as Major League Baseball, we all know Ben McDonald Todd Walker,
- 29:00Speaker 6: many many others, and Jay Johnson is the current coach,
- 29:04Speaker 6: but uh Bertman is the legend of college baseball. Okay,
- 29:10Speaker 6: he is, and he won a ton of championships. And
- 29:15Speaker 6: you felt. I remember in the eighties watching LSU when
- 29:21Speaker 6: they started get you know, when they started to get rolling.
- 29:24Speaker 6: But by the nineties you knew who the who the
- 29:26Speaker 6: beast was. When they would come into your place or
- 29:30Speaker 6: you went down to alex Box, you knew they were
- 29:36Speaker 6: on another level. They were trained on another level. The
- 29:40Speaker 6: whole thing, and their whole deal was winning championships. And
- 29:48Speaker 6: and Bertman knocked down five of them. Yeah, and since then,
- 29:52Speaker 6: what Manary won one and Jay one two? So post Bertman,
- 29:59Speaker 6: Manary with one and Jay with two, that's eight since
- 30:01Speaker 6: Bertman took over eight national championships. That's pretty damn good.
- 30:08Speaker 6: We've got some audio for you this morning. We'd love
- 30:10Speaker 6: to hear if you have a Burtman story, or if
- 30:13Speaker 6: you'd like to share some thoughts on this, We'd love
- 30:16Speaker 6: to hear from you. Skip Bertman, legendary LSU baseball coach
- 30:19Speaker 6: passes away. One of the biggest winners in the history
- 30:22Speaker 6: of North American sports, one of the biggest obviously, which
- 30:25Speaker 6: makes him one of the biggest in the SEC up
- 30:28Speaker 6: there with Paul Bear Bryant, Pat Summit, Nick Saban, you know,
- 30:32Speaker 6: among others, Okay, and and Don Staley and others that
- 30:37Speaker 6: have knocked down a bunch of championships.
- 30:42Speaker 1: But this is Bertman. We'll start with Bertman, the legend.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 30:49Speaker 7: And uh boyd I get yelled at. They can be
- 30:54Speaker 7: pretty nasty.
- 30:55Speaker 1: What would they say? What would they say mean to
- 30:57Speaker 1: a nice guy like you?
- 30:58Speaker 7: Well, one of the things like I'm walking out well here,
- 31:01Speaker 7: one of the.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Things was you want to name the school.
- 31:03Speaker 7: Well, in this case, I have to. Okay, I go
- 31:06Speaker 7: down to two Lane and this is a long time ago,
- 31:09Speaker 7: and Barry Manual was pitching, so it had to be
- 31:12Speaker 7: you know, nineteen eighty six or eighty seven, and big
- 31:16Speaker 7: crowds like there always are wherever we go.
- 31:19Speaker 4: Well, my daughter.
- 31:22Speaker 7: Lisa is attending two Lane at the time, so it's
- 31:26Speaker 7: very very difficult for her and a coach at that time,
- 31:30Speaker 7: Joe Brocko, was very nice and got some seats for
- 31:32Speaker 7: my wife because they were very hard on some other people,
- 31:35Speaker 7: very hard to get seats.
- 31:36Speaker 4: And I'm walking out.
- 31:37Speaker 7: The change Manual in the ninth and I come back
- 31:42Speaker 7: and I hear all of these things, you know, Bertram,
- 31:45Speaker 7: you idiot, and all of these things. But what catches
- 31:48Speaker 7: my attention is a big white poster board side and
- 31:53Speaker 7: it says, even skips Kid doesn't go to LSU.
- 32:00Speaker 1: That was I thought it was pretty good. That is
- 32:02Speaker 1: going to give them that one.
- 32:04Speaker 7: The only one I really I hear a lot is
- 32:06Speaker 7: when I walk to them ount, I.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Hear quack quack. Well, I walk like a dunk lee.
- 32:14Speaker 4: I mean, you know, people, people, you.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Walk a hell of a lot better than you used
- 32:19Speaker 1: to because you got new hips.
- 32:20Speaker 7: Hey for a guy, uh some new hips. I meet
- 32:23Speaker 7: a lot of people, and for all the brothers and
- 32:26Speaker 7: sisters of the hip out there. No, I tell you
- 32:38Speaker 7: what people ask me all the time. When should I
- 32:40Speaker 7: do it?
- 32:40Speaker 1: What should I do?
- 32:41Speaker 7: People got me peple I don't even know call all
- 32:43Speaker 7: the time.
- 32:44Speaker 1: And since you like that one, that's good. That's fine.
- 32:53Speaker 1: I mean, anyway, it's all right.
- 32:55Speaker 6: Anyway, you had both hips replaced the first morning around nineteen.
- 32:59Speaker 7: Nineteen ninety one, and then again in nineteen ninety four.
- 33:02Speaker 7: It's worked for me and uh mak about three hundred
- 33:05Speaker 7: thousand of those a year more knees being done and.
- 33:08Speaker 6: All right, So that was Skip Bertman talking about his
- 33:12Speaker 6: child going to Tulane and Tulane giving him all unfiltered.
- 33:16Speaker 1: You know what.
- 33:17Speaker 6: Uh you know, even Skip Burtman's kids don't go to LSU.
- 33:22Speaker 1: It's pretty good. Yeah, he he was.
- 33:24Speaker 6: You know how we get some of the best quirky
- 33:26Speaker 6: personalities in baseball. There's so much downtime that you've got
- 33:30Speaker 6: to be a storyteller. You got to be playing pranks
- 33:33Speaker 6: or jokes or you know. And back then y'all know this,
- 33:36Speaker 6: and again it's overused for me. But in the Russican
- 33:40Speaker 6: rule SEC. If you remember in the eighties, damn near
- 33:45Speaker 6: walking the dugout in SEC baseball. I mean Bertman would
- 33:49Speaker 6: be there wasn't there were no new stadiums. This is
- 33:52Speaker 6: a little fence and Bertman could be out. I mean
- 33:56Speaker 6: it could be it could be Rotten Polk, it could
- 33:58Speaker 6: be Bertman. But Burtman was one to you know, mix
- 34:01Speaker 6: it up with the either his it could be his
- 34:05Speaker 6: fans or the opposing team fans.
- 34:08Speaker 1: That was just Burtman.
- 34:10Speaker 6: So I ran into him and start well, and I
- 34:12Speaker 6: don't remember what it's either ninety nine or two thousand,
- 34:16Speaker 6: and he's walking. Bertman was known for walking in whatever
- 34:22Speaker 6: town he was in. He was a walker, right exercise,
- 34:26Speaker 6: You're there for a couple of days, depending on the split, right.
- 34:30Speaker 6: You know, used to have Friday doubleheader Saturday and then
- 34:33Speaker 6: and then somehow, you know, they were able to break
- 34:36Speaker 6: it up Friday, Saturday Sunday three game series. Many of
- 34:39Speaker 6: y'all remember that that we didn't play three three days
- 34:44Speaker 6: over the weekend, and then they changed the format. But
- 34:47Speaker 6: I run into Burtman, and I know who he is.
- 34:50Speaker 6: And this is at a time, believe it or not,
- 34:51Speaker 6: when a lot of people don't. I've been y'all know this.
- 34:54Speaker 6: I mean, I grew up on Mississippi State baseball and
- 34:58Speaker 6: the he's Wendy and I were finishing grad school. And
- 35:04Speaker 6: he's walking through this little neighborhood where we were, where
- 35:08Speaker 6: we lived, and I'm talking to I'm assuming they were
- 35:13Speaker 6: at the Holiday and Express because we were a Rocks
- 35:16Speaker 6: throw there on Highway twelfth in Starvills, So it's kind
- 35:21Speaker 6: of nestled back and there's a neighborhood behind it. And
- 35:26Speaker 6: I run into him and start talking. He can't believe
- 35:28Speaker 6: that I recognize him. Well, games weren't on TV in
- 35:32Speaker 6: nineteen nine, you know, and again while college baseball was
- 35:36Speaker 6: exploding a little bit, I mean a little bit, it
- 35:40Speaker 6: really didn't explode until a good decade or so later
- 35:43Speaker 6: as far as the stadiums, the investment, and then of
- 35:49Speaker 6: course now the last fives, I don't know how many
- 35:51Speaker 6: years you get every single Missoppi, State and o Miss
- 35:54Speaker 6: game on the stream, which now we see people's faces more,
- 35:59Speaker 6: you know, the drill, right, And I mean, can you
- 36:02Speaker 6: imagine if Jake Manglam would have played in nineteen eighty seven,
- 36:05Speaker 6: or what if Raffian Will would have played today and
- 36:09Speaker 6: you would have watched all fifty six games and been
- 36:12Speaker 6: able to see their face, not just have to go
- 36:15Speaker 6: to Smith Wills or start Bull or wherever they were playing.
- 36:19Speaker 6: So that was like a big deal for me. I
- 36:22Speaker 6: thought I'd just met, you know, the second coming when
- 36:26Speaker 6: I saw Bertman. But he was the architect of one
- 36:32Speaker 6: of the greatest dynasties in all of collegiate athletics, right
- 36:36Speaker 6: Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes, Pat Summit, Nick saban Gino at
- 36:42Speaker 6: Yukon Dawn at South Carolina. We could go on and
- 36:45Speaker 6: on I think Oklahoma and softball whatever. But Bertman won
- 36:50Speaker 6: five national titles in a short period of time in
- 36:53Speaker 6: the nineties slash with that last one in two thousand, right,
- 36:58Speaker 6: which is credible, and eleven College World Series appearances.
- 37:06Speaker 1: What you got there.
- 37:09Speaker 6: Just I needed to see it, like laid out the
- 37:12Speaker 6: years that he wanted, yeah, to understand the shortness of this.
- 37:16Speaker 6: So ninety one to two thousand and he won five
- 37:21Speaker 6: and then he went to eleven College World Series which
- 37:25Speaker 6: is I mean again, now, A lot of that was
- 37:29Speaker 6: the sixteen regionals. You had eight sixteen regionals. Remember we
- 37:34Speaker 6: didn't go to the super regionals till ninety nine, so
- 37:37Speaker 6: prior to that, it was just eight regionals, six teams,
- 37:41Speaker 6: and you played forever double elimination, and you played and
- 37:45Speaker 6: played and played and played and played and then played
- 37:49Speaker 6: some more. That was just the format. And then someone
- 37:52Speaker 6: I don't even know who it was, decided, hey, why
- 37:54Speaker 6: don't we go regionals, pare them down to four sixteen
- 37:58Speaker 6: to four fourteen regionals, and then we'll do sixteen supers
- 38:02Speaker 6: and then we'll do Omaha, which has which has been
- 38:06Speaker 6: awesome for college baseball because super regionals have you on
- 38:10Speaker 6: the edge of your seat every single pitch, which is
- 38:13Speaker 6: a ton of fun for people that are in him
- 38:15Speaker 6: in June. How big of a transition was that, you know,
- 38:21Speaker 6: I didn't he didn't think about it. Well, I knew
- 38:25Speaker 6: I was actually covering Pat McMahon at the time because
- 38:28Speaker 6: he had become the baseball coach, and Pat and I
- 38:30Speaker 6: hit it off, really liked him, really enjoyed covering him,
- 38:36Speaker 6: loved his intensity and fire, and he would have won well,
- 38:42Speaker 6: he was already winning big, but he would have won
- 38:44Speaker 6: big big had he not left Mississippi State to go
- 38:46Speaker 6: to Florida. But he was promised some things that were
- 38:48Speaker 6: not done. And so yeah, we knew it was big.
- 38:55Speaker 6: But also understand Jackson that we weren't able to watch
- 39:00Speaker 6: the Super Regionals live for years, all streaming. So even
- 39:05Speaker 6: though Mississippi State went to the first one or the
- 39:07Speaker 6: first year super Regionals were there, McMahon drove MSU he
- 39:11Speaker 6: had just gone to the College World Series in the
- 39:13Speaker 6: old format in ninety eight, and then he went to
- 39:16Speaker 6: the Super Regionals in ninety nine. In two thousand and
- 39:19Speaker 6: one before going to Florida, we knew.
- 39:22Speaker 1: It was different.
- 39:22Speaker 6: I don't know if we knew how cool it was
- 39:24Speaker 6: going to be until streaming became prevalent and the access
- 39:29Speaker 6: all of us have now on our TVs and phones.
- 39:31Speaker 6: So Supers in the beginning, you still had to travel
- 39:33Speaker 6: to go see Oh absolutely, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 39:37Speaker 6: because I think I think McMahon played in Clemson and
- 39:39Speaker 6: Ohio State or cal State Fullerton, and you didn't get
- 39:43Speaker 6: the chenerals. No, you're not You're not getting those. You're
- 39:46Speaker 6: not getting that.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Dang.
- 39:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Do you remember like when the first super you watched
- 39:52Speaker 1: them TV was No?
- 39:54Speaker 6: I remember going to Supers. I guess we start did
- 40:00Speaker 6: get a little bit on TV, and I don't know
- 40:03Speaker 6: two thousand and five, three, four, five, six somewhere in there,
- 40:08Speaker 6: but you didn't get what you get today, which is
- 40:10Speaker 6: every single one. I don't know when that started. It
- 40:14Speaker 6: all runs together. Who I mean, I need to find
- 40:16Speaker 6: out who this guy was. It reinvented the college baseball postseason. Yeah,
- 40:20Speaker 6: I don't know, faithful for him, right, that's a lot
- 40:23Speaker 6: of baseball they were playing, no question, I mean double
- 40:27Speaker 6: elimination everybody in no way as as waye you was.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Cycling in and out.
- 40:33Speaker 6: Now the four team is still double, but it's not
- 40:40Speaker 6: near the same as having a six team no double
- 40:44Speaker 6: limb with eight regionals like it was in the format
