- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Thursday, it's the 7th of
- 0:16March and I hope you are having a fantastic day.
- 0:20Whether it's just started halfway through or you are done
- 0:24and dusted and tucked into bed with a bit of bedtime reading in
- 0:29the gospel. But wherever you are today, so
- 0:32great that we can read this together.
- 0:33Isn't it magical? Isn't it awesome hearing Mark
- 0:38describe Jesus, having him share the words that is shared, and
- 0:43share these stories so that we can be back there with him in
- 0:49the midst of all the action, walking those dusty streets,
- 0:54Palestinian sun beating down on our necks, smelling the markets
- 0:58around us and the chaos and the shouting.
- 1:02Yeah, it's all there. It's all there.
- 1:06What an incredible opportunity. So we are going to do this again
- 1:10and for all 16 chapters, all the way through until Easter.
- 1:14We are going to go back and walk and listen and learn with those
- 1:19disciples as Jesus went about His ministry.
- 1:23And today is no different. Today let's do it, shall we?
- 1:26Let us read together. Mark Chapter 2.
- 1:41When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news
- 1:45spread quickly that he was back home.
- 1:47Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with
- 1:51visitors that there was no more room even outside the door.
- 1:55While he was preaching God's word to them, four men arrived
- 1:59carrying a paralysed man on a mat.
- 2:01They couldn't bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they
- 2:05dug a hole through the roof above his head.
- 2:09Then they lowered the man on his mat right down in front of
- 2:12Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said
- 2:16to the paralysed man. My child, your sins are
- 2:21forgiven. But some of the teachers of
- 2:24religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves,
- 2:27what is he saying? This is blasphemy.
- 2:31Only God can forgive sins. Jesus knew immediately what they
- 2:36were thinking, so he asked them. Why do you question this in your
- 2:41hearts? Is it easier to say to the
- 2:43paralysed man your sins are forgiven or stand up, pick up
- 2:48your mat and walk? So I will prove to you that the
- 2:52Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.
- 2:57Then Jesus turned to the paralysed man and said stand up,
- 3:01pick up your mat and go home. And the man jumped up, grabbed
- 3:07his mat and walked out through the stunned onlookers.
- 3:11They were all amazed and praised God exclaiming We've never seen
- 3:16anything like this before. Then Jesus went out to the
- 3:21Lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him.
- 3:25As he walked along, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus, sitting at his
- 3:31tax collector's booth. Follow me and be my disciple,
- 3:36Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him.
- 3:40Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as
- 3:45dinner guests. Along with many tax collectors
- 3:48and other disreputable sinners. There were many people of this
- 3:52kind among Jesus followers. But when the teachers of
- 3:55religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax
- 3:59collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples why
- 4:03does he eat with such scum. When Jesus heard this, he told
- 4:08them healthy people don't need a doctor.
- 4:11Sick people do. I've come to call not those who
- 4:15think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.
- 4:21Once, when John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some
- 4:25people came to Jesus and asked why don't your disciples fast
- 4:29like John's disciples and the Pharisees do?
- 4:32Jesus replied. Do wedding guests fast while
- 4:36celebrating with the groom? Of course not.
- 4:39They can't fast while the groom is with them, But someday the
- 4:43groom will be taken away from them and then they will fast.
- 4:49Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth?
- 4:53For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth,
- 4:56leaving an even bigger tear than before.
- 4:59And no one puts new wine into old wineskins, for the wine
- 5:03would burst the wineskins and the wine and the skins would
- 5:07both be lost. And new wine calls for new
- 5:10wineskins. One Sabbath day, as Jesus was
- 5:15walking through some grain fields, his disciples began
- 5:18breaking off heads of grain to eat.
- 5:21But the Pharisees said to Jesus, look, why are they breaking the
- 5:25law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?
- 5:28Jesus said to them, Haven't you ever read in the scriptures what
- 5:33David did when he and his companions were hungry?
- 5:36He went into the House of God during the days when Abiathar
- 5:40was high priest and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves
- 5:44of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat.
- 5:47He also gave some to his companions.
- 5:50Then Jesus said to them, the Sabbath was made to meet the
- 5:54needs of people and not people to meet the requirements of the
- 5:58Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even
- 6:04over the Sabbath. Jesus, you are new wine.
- 6:19You bring not just an amendment to the way that our lives are
- 6:24and the lives of all the people who encounter you, but you
- 6:28completely rewrite how we can engage with our maker and our
- 6:34world. You come with peace and
- 6:38forgiveness and inclusion. You come to show us the heart of
- 6:42God. Help us not try and squeeze you
- 6:48into our old wine skins, our old ways of thinking.
- 6:52Try and put you in a box that makes sense to us.
- 6:55But, Lord, just pry open our hearts to be wide, wide open so
- 7:02that we can be ready for all that you bring, not just what we
- 7:07think you ought to bring. Because you are always, always
- 7:12more creative, more incredible and broader and more magnificent
- 7:17than our human minds can ever manage.
- 7:21So we just give you permission to be God in our lives, moving
- 7:29and shaping us in whatever way you need.
- 7:33We just submit before Your Majesty, Your Authority, and
- 7:38your kingship. We love you, Jesus, and we thank
- 7:41you that you would choose to engage with us and love us and
- 7:47draw us into your family. And we pray all of this through
- 7:52your wonderful name. Ah man.
