- 0:55Hello Jeffrey, good morning, follow Uh. I have questions, Jeff,
- 1:00because we have a trial of press conferences today, starting with the Abs at
- 1:03nine thirty, the Nuggets eleven thirty, and the Broncos at twelve thirty.
- 1:06Today. Regarding the Broncos, I know this is going to be a lot
- 1:10about bo Nicks, But do you think in their head? Because I know
- 1:14what Peyton's gonna say. He's gonna say, hey, it's an open competition.
- 1:17May the best man win at quarterback? Do they know who they're starting
- 1:21already? You know, I'd say they don't know. But I think the
- 1:26data we don't have is is this really going to be a fair fight?
- 1:30You know, is it really gonna be a competition, because you can,
- 1:36you know, you could sort of keep up if it's not. If it's
- 1:40not, and I'm not saying they're doing that, but if it's not,
- 1:42it's pretty easy to hide right now, because the drills are pretty innocuous.
- 1:49Uh, there's really no parameters. I mean, the mandatory mini camp in
- 1:55June, you could tell some things if they were leaning a certain way,
- 1:59So that may the first clue if this is indeed a real, real life
- 2:05competition. So we don't know that yet. I think it will be at
- 2:09least early on in training camp. You know how soon they will take it
- 2:15out of competition mode. We don't know that either. But the other fact
- 2:20we don't have is nobody, even people who've coached with him, have seen
- 2:25Sean Payton do this as a head coach, actually have a quarterback competition.
- 2:30So we really don't know how he's gonna do it what his patience level is
- 2:36gonna be with it all? And you know that part of it we have
- 2:38to see too. Well. If I'm Sean Payton, I'm looking at both
- 2:42quarterbacks and I get it. Zach Wilson has had NFL snaps under his belt,
- 2:46but he's the same age as bo Nicks. You went and got bon
- 2:49Nicks with number twelve. Why wouldn't you play bon Nicks? That's me But
- 2:52I need to ask you, LEGI this OTA activity? What does that stand
- 2:58for? I always forget organized team activities? That's what it is. Activities.
- 3:05We're having o RA right now. We're gonna, yes, yes we
- 3:08are, so the the veterans are not required to be there, but it's
- 3:14understood they should. Is that the apt way to put it. It's always
- 3:17been, you know, since the last two cbas last two or three CBA
- 3:23is the only mandatory saying, which in NFL terms means the only thing players
- 3:30can be fined for missing is the mandatory mini camp, and teams usually have
- 3:38two or three day mandatory mini camp in June. That's usually the last thing
- 3:42of the off season program. So Courtland Sutton, would you be surprised if
- 3:46he doesn't show today. No, I would not be surprised if he's not
- 3:51there. I wouldn't expect him uh to be to be. He hasn't attended
- 3:54yet to my knowledge, so I don't think he's going to change that.
- 3:59You know, again, you see where things really are at. If a
- 4:02guy is willing to to miss mandatory mini camp and get fine. Now fine
- 4:08isn't huge. It's not like the regular season, but it's still a check.
- 4:12They don't like writing. So if you're Sean Payton, you're banking on
- 4:15this kid come in and play quarterback. He is your prize. You want
- 4:19him working with the receivers as fast as possible, get that chemistry that's so
- 4:24important on game day. And your top receiver is not there and he hasn't
- 4:28been there, what is he thinking? Yeah, I know, you know,
- 4:32I'd love for him to be there that, you know, if they
- 4:36want everybody there doing what you're saying, getting ready. But that's what I
- 4:42mean. If this is really a quarterback competition, it's not that big a
- 4:46deal in terms of timing because in theory everyone is is going to get reps,
- 4:53you know, all three guys, So in theory, not as big
- 4:57a deal. If it's really a competition. If it's not, then yeah,
- 5:01you would like if you've quietly decided you want Nix to be the guy,
- 5:08then yeah, you would like him working with as many people as possible.
- 5:11But that's also also the disadvantage in some ways of the whole rookie quarterback
- 5:17saying, because you know, Peyton Manning in his time here would have had
- 5:23the receiver's head and him have already gathered before the offseason program starts, so
- 5:30they don't have that going either this time of year. Let me ask you
- 5:32about another receiver. Is it fair to have any expectation this year for Tim
- 5:36Patrick after being out the last two years? Yeah, I'm gonna be That's
- 5:42a guy I sort of want to keep an eye on in June and then
- 5:46in training camp because just to see whies act because missing two years is this
- 5:51significant, and you know there there isn't a lot of extensive sort of research
- 5:58you can do about how guy looked after that. It hasn't happened that often
- 6:02to players, So yeah, I don't know. You know, they they
- 6:06keep saying he's looking good and that they expect him to be able to contribute
- 6:14and be the guy they wanted him to be, but the fact they kind
- 6:17of went and got a guy like him in the draft was intriguing to me
- 6:24and maybe sort of a insurance just in case he's not. I've heard a
- 6:30lot of this on talk radio, and a lot of it stems from our
- 6:32show. If you're gonna use a mid round draft pick on a running back
- 6:36like they did with Odric Estimate, does it mean that Javanti Williams is suddenly
- 6:41in trouble. I don't know that he's in trouble, Vic, but you
- 6:45know they they didn't take Estimate because you know, he was one of those
- 6:50guys where teams are looking at that point in the draft and they look up
- 6:55at the board and they got a guy that's graded way above the spot,
- 6:59and he was that guy for them. So and I fully expect him to
- 7:04be in the mix. I think in trouble for Carries. I don't know
- 7:10that his roster spot Gotcha would be in trouble yet, but yeah, I
- 7:14think if you were here before, but Carrie's estimate is gonna get and I
- 7:18think he's gonna get. Them are coming from somewhere, and they're coming from
- 7:23the guys who are already here, he's seen him. Hey, power ranking
- 7:29the most intimidating players on the Broncos is estimate already vaulted to number one.
- 7:32I can't believe what that guy looks like. Yeah, No, he's he's
- 7:36he's got the proverbial NFL body as the Scouts series NFL body body builds body
- 7:46of the rookie class. You know I said it on our airs. Uh,
- 7:53you know that's the guy who you know, bo Nicks was going to
- 7:55get all the attention, but the rookie who might play your quickness right out
- 7:59of the day estimate? Well, all, I think Allas can play pretty
- 8:05fast too. Jonahllwis, Yeah, that injury to Drew Sanders that came out
- 8:07of the blue. Did they hesitate to make that announcement because they'd hoped it
- 8:11wasn't as intense as it was? They he tore the achilles. Maybe they
- 8:16were hoping it was a partial tear. No, they just don't like talking
- 8:20about it. Payton, he breaks out in hives. Jeffery, Just from
- 8:28a reporter standpoint, what purpose does that serve to wait to release that news?
- 8:33What? What? What's the big deal? Why wouldn't you an april?
- 8:35Yeah? What? What? What do you gain a lot of It's
- 8:39a control issue, you know, keeping things in house. And they've also
- 8:43had some changes on their medical staff too, so I don't you know behind
- 8:46the scenes, so, uh you know, there may be some of that
- 8:50at work too. I don't want to speak for Peyton. This will be
- 8:54the first time he publicly will acknowledge or made it knowledg in some way Drew
- 9:01Sanders. But uh, you know, so I don't know the exact day
- 9:05was injured. I do know eight days before the draft they were still talking
- 9:07like he was in the mix. So that's your timetable, right, there
- 9:11is eight days between saying Drew Sanders was in the mix and selecting Jonah allis
- 9:18in the draft. That's your timetable of the injury. Well, I know
- 9:22that it's like we didn't see a lot of Drew Sanders. And forgive my
- 9:26ignorance, LEGI I don't know what position he was going to play. They
- 9:30started an inside linebacker. Then it's sounded like they might move him outside that
- 9:35sort of edge spot. But he was a sixty seventh overall pick, Like
- 9:39this isn't some small loss, Like that's a player that they invested a lot
- 9:43into and we aren't going to see him play essentially until his thirty year in
- 9:46the league. Yeah. No, it's a tough and you know, usually
- 9:52there, you know, achilles are sort of a weird impact or changing direction
- 9:58injuries, so it is you don't see him very often this time of year
- 10:01either. So, uh, but I don't know that they had officially decided
- 10:07where he's going to be. You know, I know that you know,
- 10:09Josie Jewell left in free agency, and that's a pretty significant little gap in
- 10:16the defense, and I think they were thinking maybe he fills some of that
- 10:22on early downs and then and then moves to an edge roll when they go
- 10:26to the nickel type thing, and I think they were tinkering with that idea.
- 10:31And this this really impacts that now because they're going to have to probably
- 10:37have guys in very specific roles now instead of a hybrid player like him.
- 10:41Which of the rookies that didn't play much last year, and then Marvin Mims
- 10:45of his mind, obviously, which one is going to get more playing time
- 10:48this year, like actually carve out a role. Well, I thought Sanders
- 10:52would be that guy. I mean, he didn't get he didn't get very
- 10:56many snaps, but it better be mims or you know, they've got some
- 11:01some gaps in the offense that if it's not. And I just think we
- 11:07didn't see much of the rookies at all last year, and that as they
- 11:11move out of this transition period or at least as they try to get back
- 11:16in the playoff mix. Uh you know this this time of playing rookies two
- 11:22hundred snaps in their rookie year or not at all, like you know,
- 11:28uh, but you know, Riley Moss comes to mind. I think Riley
- 11:33Moss at least there's a chance to go from a just a smattering of snaps
- 11:39to really being in the mix. But they're gonna have to get over the
- 11:45whole not playing young player things because they won't they won't dig out of this
- 11:48unless they invest in the in their own young players to do it. Definitely
- 11:54from ESPN dot com. So I was reading this article on PFF yesterday and
- 12:01they said the top three players for every NFL team, and I think the
- 12:05Broncos top three they got right, which was Patrick's or tan Quinn minors in
- 12:09Courtland Sutton. The issue I had, like you, was if I had
- 12:13to make a top five who the hell is that? Like, who are
- 12:16the two guys after? Yeah, I mean production wise, you know,
- 12:20Singleton's got to be in there. Uh, production wise, But you know,
- 12:24again that's the old I don't I don't think talent evaluators see Alex Singletons
- 12:31as this tremendously explosive, impactful player. But you know, all the guy
- 12:37does is put up one hundred and twenty tackles every year. So I think
- 12:41keeping in that mix, you know, I think, you know, in
- 12:45theory, you know, potentially I see Mims in there at some point.
- 12:48But but you know, I was, I was a big fan before they
- 12:54drafted him. So they're at that. That's really where they're at when you
- 12:58turn to other pro personnel people around the league, that this isn't a you
- 13:07know, the the exceedingly talented roster. Even in free agency they didn't really
- 13:13they couldn't afford to because of the Russell Wilson decision. But they went out
- 13:18and signed guys for very specific jobs. It wasn't like we're going to get
- 13:22this explosive, talented player to move the needle on the roster. It's we
- 13:28need a guy to fill this job type of thing. So that Uh,
- 13:33they really do that. They aren't at a talent deficit, uh compared to
- 13:39some of the you know, the upper tier of the league. And you
- 13:41know, until they close that gap a little more. And to me,
- 13:46you know, you don't keep their can you don't get this long term deal
- 13:50done, you know, or at least convince him things are going to get
- 13:54better. Uh you know that that takes us, you know, take him
- 13:58off this roster. And what's the overall talent level at I think that's they're
- 14:03at a deficiency and then you know they've they've got to keep grinding to fix
- 14:07it. Last thing for you, Lego hes appreciate the time was reading an
- 14:11article about the chain gang. How that might be a thing of the past.
- 14:16What's your read on this? And how does this work? So they
- 14:20have the chip in the ball or whatever, But how do they know when
- 14:22somebody's down? Yeah, I mean they're not going to like be able to
- 14:26do away with officials forever, you know type of thing. But the spotting
- 14:33of the ball with the chip and the ball, I mean, you can
- 14:35tell when the guys goes down, you know, the distance the ball went
- 14:41and all that. But the fact they haven't done this sooner has been one
- 14:45of the great mysteries of life in the NFL. But there's always the competition
- 14:50Committee. There's always been a lot of pushback and into moving away from the
- 14:56change. You know. I thought for sure when they use the note card
- 15:01one time to to do the difference of the ball, that that that would
- 15:05be the ultimate movement, that they finally would move to the modern era.
- 15:11But they did not. So uh, I do know some people in the
- 15:15league are really hoping this happened at some point, because it really would.
- 15:18I mean, in a lot of tennis tournaments, they it's all electronic,
- 15:22you know, to judge the lines now, and you know, players don't
- 15:24even argue anymore. It's just you know, it's just part of the deal.
- 15:30So I think it's gonna happen, you know, will happen this year.
- 15:33Uh. I'm always skeptical until I actually see him sort of crest the
- 15:39hill and move on into the future. But honest, legg is part of
- 15:43you going to miss that little two seconds of tension as they extend the chain
- 15:48to see if the ball actually got there or not. Oh yeah, no,
- 15:50that's always been a big part of it. My favorite, My favorite
- 15:54is so random around the goal. I know, yeah, yeah, right.
- 15:58It this far My favorite though. What the chain gang is when the
- 16:00chain is crimped, Oh yeah, you know, and they gotta uncrimp it,
- 16:04like oh, there's a couple more inches in the sucker, or they
- 16:07the guys jumped the gun and they figure it's the first down and they moved
- 16:12the chain down the line and they have to go get them. I have
- 16:15to go get them to come back. If I just showed somebody a video
- 16:21and they've never watched football before, and I showed them the video of them
- 16:23extending the chain for a first down, and I told them, this is
- 16:27a multi billion dollar corporation. What do you think they they'd say, I
- 16:32mean, like, that's ridiculous. Yeah, you can watch a game for
- 16:36the International Space Station. But yeah, I worked the chain way back.
- 16:44It's so high school games, you know. So I've got the I've got
- 16:47the chain experience back in the day. And look at you, and you're
- 16:49you're railing against your own profession. How dare you? Leggy Well? Some
- 16:53would say sports writers are the change of the media world. Jeff LANGWELLDESPN dot

- 17:03Thanks so we'll se
