- 0:12Hello friends. Sean here it is Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the very first day of November.
- 0:19Hello to you and hello to this month.
- 0:23I hope you are going well and I hope that you have a better
- 0:27system for knowing the day of the month than I do because I
- 0:32literally recorded yesterday's podcast welcoming everyone to
- 0:35November. And then as I was saving the
- 0:38file, I realized that indeed it was the 31st of October, which I
- 0:43completely forgot existed. But that is the beauty of re
- 0:47recording things so that I don't sound like a complete numpty
- 0:51until I tell you what actually happened right now.
- 0:53That's right. I can learn from my mistakes.
- 0:56So a pinch and a punch for the first day of the month.
- 0:59I hope it is a beautiful one for you.
- 1:03And today we round out the Book of Acts.
- 1:07Paul and his shipwrecked companions realize that they are
- 1:11on the island of Malta. And then he'll make it to Rome,
- 1:14where he will spend the next couple of years under house
- 1:17arrest there. So as we gather to hear the last
- 1:21leg of this story, let us come before our God, OfferUp our
- 1:26hearts and our minds, our attention and our intentions as
- 1:32we have the Holy Spirit move in us to stir Whatever the message
- 1:38is in here that God has for us today, Come Holy Spirit, let's
- 1:46read together Acts Chapter 28. Once we were safe on shore, we
- 2:02learned that we were on the island of Malta.
- 2:04The people of the island were very kind to us.
- 2:07It was cold and rainy, so they built a fire on the shore to
- 2:11welcome us. As Paul gathered an arm full of
- 2:14sticks and was laying them on the fire, a poisonous snake
- 2:18driven out by the heat bit him on the hand.
- 2:21The people of the island saw it hanging from his hand and said
- 2:25to each other a murderer, no doubt, though he escaped the
- 2:28sea, Justice will not permit him to live.
- 2:31But Paul shook off the snake into the fire and was unharmed.
- 2:36The people waited for him to swell up or suddenly drop dead.
- 2:40But when they had waited a long time and saw that he wasn't
- 2:43harmed, they changed their minds and decided he was a God.
- 2:49Near the shore where we landed was an estate belonging to
- 2:52Publius, the chief official of the island.
- 2:55He welcomed us and treated us kindly for three days.
- 3:00As it happened, Publius's father was ill with fever and
- 3:03dysentery. Paul went in and prayed for him,
- 3:07and laying his hands on him, he healed him.
- 3:10Then all the other sick people on the island came and were
- 3:14healed. As a result, we were showered
- 3:17with honors, and when the time came to sale, people supplied us
- 3:22with everything we would need for the trip.
- 3:26It was three months after the shipwreck that we set sail on
- 3:29another ship that had wintered at the island, an Alexandrian
- 3:32ship with the twin gods as its figurehead.
- 3:36Our first stop was Syracuse, where we stayed three days.
- 3:41From there we sailed across to Regium a day later AS wind began
- 3:47blowing. So the following day we sailed
- 3:50up the coast to Putioli. There we found some believers
- 3:55who invited us to spend a week with them, and so we came to
- 3:59Rome. The brothers and sisters in Rome
- 4:02had heard we were coming, and they came to meet us at the
- 4:05forum on the Apion Way. Others joined us at the three
- 4:09Taverns. When Paul saw them, he was
- 4:12encouraged and thanked God. When we arrived in Rome, Paul
- 4:17was permitted to have his own private lodging, though he was
- 4:20guarded by a soldier. Three days after Paul's arrival,
- 4:25he called together the local Jewish leaders.
- 4:27He said to them. Brothers, I was arrested in
- 4:31Jerusalem and handed over to the Roman government, even though I
- 4:35had done nothing against our people or the customs of our
- 4:38ancestors. The Romans tried me and wanted
- 4:42to release me because they found no cause for the death sentence.
- 4:46But when the Jewish leaders protested the decision, I felt
- 4:50it necessary to appeal to Caesar, even though I had no
- 4:54desire to press charges against my own people.
- 4:57I asked you to come here today so we could get acquainted and
- 5:02so I could explain to you that I am bound with this chain because
- 5:07I believe that the hope of Israel, the Messiah, has already
- 5:12come, they replied. We have had no letters from
- 5:16Judea or reports against you from anyone who has come here,
- 5:20But we want to hear what you believe.
- 5:23For the only thing we know about this movement is that it is
- 5:26denounced everywhere. So a time was set, and on that
- 5:31day a large number of people came to Paul's lodging.
- 5:35He explained and testified about the Kingdom of God and tried to
- 5:39persuade them about Jesus from the scriptures using the Law of
- 5:43Moses and the books of the prophets.
- 5:45He spoke to them from morning until evening.
- 5:49Some were persuaded by the things he said, but others did
- 5:52not believe, and after they had argued back and forth among
- 5:56themselves, they left with this final word from Paul.
- 6:01The Holy Spirit was right when he said to your ancestors
- 6:05through Isaiah the prophet, go and say to this people, when you
- 6:10hear what I say, you will not understand.
- 6:13When you see what I do, you will not comprehend.
- 6:17For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears
- 6:21cannot hear, And they have closed their eyes so their eyes
- 6:26cannot see and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot
- 6:30understand and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.
- 6:38So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been
- 6:42offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it for the next
- 6:47two years. Paul lived in Rome at his own
- 6:55expense. He welcomed all who visited him,
- 6:59boldly proclaiming the Kingdom of God and teaching about the
- 7:03Lord. Jesus Christ.
- 7:05And no one tried to stop him. Thank you, Jesus, for placing us
- 7:16here in community with your people.
- 7:20Thank you for the fellow believers in our lives who
- 7:23encourage us. Thank you for those friendships,
- 7:26those relationships. May we hear your words of wisdom
- 7:32and reassurance and kindness through them.
- 7:35And may we bear those words of love and companionship and
- 7:40correction gently when it's needed, that together we can
- 7:44spur each other on following you.
- 7:48And no matter how small we feel, Lord, use us to speak your words
- 7:53of encouragement to our brothers and sisters.
- 7:57We love you, and we are so grateful for this incredible
- 8:01story that we read about Paul in your church.
- 8:05And we are so grateful that you act so faithfully throughout,
- 8:12sharing Your love, sharing the incredible story of you coming
- 8:18to us to forgive us and to draw us into your family.
- 8:22We are just flabbergasted at your generosity, Lord, and we
- 8:28pray all these things in Your saving name.
- 8:32Amen.
