- 0:27Today we're concluding our series, Meaningful Work, Calling,
- 0:31Formation, Service, and Love.
- 0:34Have you ever been to a really good
- 0:36retirement party?
- 0:37A couple of years ago, I had the
- 0:39privilege of attending the retirement party for Mr.
- 0:42Klum, who had been the principal and head
- 0:44of school at the school I attended as
- 0:46a child.
- 0:48Now this school, in many ways, was small.
- 0:53It was K-8 school, not necessarily the
- 0:56most impressive place in the world.
- 0:58It was an evangelical institution founded by graduates
- 1:01of Wheaton College.
- 1:03And Mr. Klum had dedicated his whole career
- 1:06to this school in its smallness and in
- 1:10its everydayness.
- 1:11He started as a teacher.
- 1:12He became an administrator and he just gave
- 1:14it his all.
- 1:15And that was so clear.
- 1:17And, you know, at that retirement party, we
- 1:19were holding it in a building, a new
- 1:22building that had been built from the ground
- 1:23up for the school.
- 1:24The school was thriving.
- 1:26Enrollment was up.
- 1:27There were lots of resources in place to
- 1:29serve students well.
- 1:29There were new initiatives to make financial aid
- 1:32possible for students from different backgrounds to come
- 1:34to the school.
- 1:35A lot of cool things were happening.
- 1:36But you know what people talked about at
- 1:38Mr. Klum's retirement party at that celebration?
- 1:41They didn't talk about how amazing the school
- 1:43was or how the school had grown and
- 1:45changed.
- 1:46They talked about how Mr. Klum loved people.
- 1:51They talked about how when there were gatherings
- 1:53and everybody got to eat, he would always
- 1:54wait and eat last.
- 1:57They talked about how he would learn children's
- 1:59names and get down and talk to them
- 2:01on their level, which was challenging for him
- 2:02to do because I think he's like six
- 2:04foot seven.
- 2:05They talked about how he would coach his
- 2:07basketball teams and call it the best in
- 2:10the students that he coached.
- 2:12I had stories like that that I could
- 2:14remember from my interactions with Mr. Klum.
- 2:17And there was a reason that I decided
- 2:19to go show up, you know, as an
- 2:21adult in my thirties to his retirement party,
- 2:23because I remembered what it was like to
- 2:26be in the hallway and to see his
- 2:27face light up or to be having a
- 2:30conversation and to know that he really took
- 2:32what you were saying seriously, even though you
- 2:34were just a kid.
- 2:38People knew love because of Mr. Klum.
- 2:43People experienced love because of Mr. Klum.
- 2:47People experienced God's love because of Mr. Klum.
- 2:52That's a really good retirement party.
- 2:56And for all of us, as we think
- 2:59about our work, I hope we're all headed
- 3:02towards a retirement party like that, regardless of
- 3:05whether it's recognized in an actual celebration where
- 3:08people tell stories like that or not.
- 3:11There's something about what we leave behind us
- 3:15that really matters in our work.
- 3:17And yes, as we've talked about, God accomplishes
- 3:20things in the world through our work.
- 3:22But even more than whatever we might accomplish
- 3:26in our work, what we leave behind is
- 3:29whether or not we loved.
- 3:32Did our work hold love?
- 3:34Was it a vessel for the love of
- 3:37God to the people around us and to
- 3:39the world beyond us?
- 3:41In as much as it was, our work
- 3:44mattered.
- 3:46That's going to be true someday at your
- 3:48retirement party.
- 3:50That's going to be true someday at your
- 3:51funeral.
- 3:52It's going to be true in eternity that
- 3:55the way you lived, the way you worked
- 3:57and as much as it was love, that's
- 4:00what made it matter.
- 4:02That's where the meaning really was.
- 4:05So as we come to the end of
- 4:08a series about making work meaningful, trying to
- 4:11figure out what's the meaning that's already there
- 4:14in our work and how can we contribute
- 4:15to the meaning in our work, we've looked
- 4:17at lots of different dimensions and our work
- 4:20and our lives are multifaceted.
- 4:22We've talked about how to love is to
- 4:25will the good.
- 4:26And you as a human being, you have
- 4:28a will, you have a capacity to choose
- 4:30inside of you and that a machine or
- 4:32an AI doesn't have that.
- 4:33And so you have a unique capacity to
- 4:35love other people in a way that a
- 4:37machine never can.
- 4:38And that's part of why your human work
- 4:40is meaningful.
- 4:41We talked about how you as a human
- 4:43being were created by God to give yourself
- 4:47away.
- 4:47That there's a way that you only discover
- 4:49your true self by giving the gift of
- 4:51your true self to other people.
- 4:53And so as you give yourself away in
- 4:56your work and in other ways, you become
- 4:58more of who you are.
- 4:59You discover more of who you are.
- 5:01We talked about service, how adopting the humble
- 5:04posture of Jesus to love and to serve
- 5:07others actually is where the greatest nobility and
- 5:11exaltation lies in our careers.
- 5:14We talked about just practical ways to love
- 5:16other people, how you can encourage your teammates,
- 5:18you can pray for your teammates, you can
- 5:20forgive your teammates and others when they sin
- 5:23against you.
- 5:23You can be generous with your money that
- 5:25you earn at your job to support people
- 5:28and causes that matter.
- 5:29When you experience suffering in your work, you
- 5:33can get through it by faith and choose
- 5:38to love others even when you're in pain.
- 5:40And that makes that love even more precious.
- 5:43So there's all these different dimensions, but what
- 5:46ties them all together is love.
- 5:49What ties them all together is God's love
- 5:53coming into our work.
- 5:56So I want to go back to the
- 5:57passage that we looked at in the very
- 5:59first episode of this series.
- 6:00This is from 1st John, the passage that
- 6:03famously says, God is love.
- 6:06So just going to read a couple of
- 6:07verses.
- 6:08Don't have time to do the whole thing.
- 6:10This is from chapter 4, starting in verse
- 6:1416.
- 6:17God is love and whoever abides in love
- 6:20abides in God and God abides in him.
- 6:25By this is love perfected with us so
- 6:28that we may have confidence for the day
- 6:29of judgment, because as he is, so also
- 6:33are we in this world.
- 6:36And then skipping ahead to verse 19, we
- 6:39love because he first loved us.
- 6:44In the first episode of this series, we
- 6:46looked a lot at that phrase, as he
- 6:49is, so also are we in this world.
- 6:52That you mean something in the world.
- 6:56Your life has meaning.
- 6:57When people look at you, it's like they're
- 6:59reading a word and the word is love.
- 7:04Your life means the love of God to
- 7:07other people.
- 7:09And so the question is, is that really
- 7:13true?
- 7:14Is that really true of our lives or
- 7:16is it just a nice idea?
- 7:19Because if, again, if we're growing in self
- 7:21-awareness and in humility by God's grace, a
- 7:24lot of the time people read that word
- 7:26and it says something besides love.
- 7:28It says ambition.
- 7:31It says pride.
- 7:33It says greed.
- 7:36It says disdain.
- 7:39What is the word that people read when
- 7:41they look at you this week?
- 7:45We're weak.
- 7:46We're sinners.
- 7:48We don't have what it takes to give
- 7:50people that pure, clear message of God's love
- 7:53and the way we live every day.
- 7:56But see, that's why that final verse 19
- 7:59matters so much.
- 8:00We love because he first loved.
- 8:03Us.
- 8:05God spoke his perfect word into the world
- 8:08in the word, Jesus Christ.
- 8:12Jesus at every turn was love.
- 8:18Every time that he put his hand to
- 8:22a hammer or a chisel to work on
- 8:26something as a carpenter, every time he put
- 8:29his hand on a child in blessing, every
- 8:33time he put his hand on someone suffering
- 8:35from leprosy or blindness to heal them, his
- 8:42hands were expressing the meaning of the world,
- 8:45his hands were showing people a word and
- 8:49that word was love.
- 8:53Jesus ultimately showed that on the cross.
- 8:56When we look at the cross, we see
- 8:59love.
- 9:01We see all those things that all the
- 9:04dimensions and the facets of it, the forgiveness
- 9:06of God, the encouragement of God, the mercy
- 9:09of God, the justice of God, and ultimately
- 9:13in all of those things, the love of
- 9:15God for people like us who don't deserve
- 9:18it, for people like us who don't measure
- 9:20up, who don't make the cut, who often
- 9:23hurt others and hurt ourselves because of our
- 9:25own proclivities for ambitions that don't satisfy.
- 9:32And Jesus rose again on the third day
- 9:34and in his resurrection, he is still love.
- 9:40He gives himself as a gift of love
- 9:43to everyone who turns to him in faith.
- 9:46And that, that includes us.
- 9:49So when we turn to Jesus in faith,
- 9:52we receive that love of God for us.
- 9:56We receive that word that says love, and
- 9:59it begins to change us.
- 10:02We're not perfect right away.
- 10:04We're being perfected in love over time, like
- 10:07the passage says, but it's still real.
- 10:12It's still there.
- 10:14And so that's what ultimately makes your work
- 10:17meaningful is, is your work a vessel for
- 10:21the love of God in Jesus Christ?
- 10:23In as much as your work holds the
- 10:26love of God, your work matters.
- 10:29It is full of meaning.
- 10:31It is revealing the very meaning of the
- 10:34universe to the people around you.
- 10:37And whenever our work isn't motivated by love,
- 10:40whenever it's motivated by those other kinds of
- 10:42false ambitions, it really, it really isn't meaningful.
- 10:47You know, God may still use it, but
- 10:49it's really not what we're meant to give
- 10:52to the world.
- 10:54So that's, that's it.
- 10:56That's the simple way to have a meaningful
- 10:57career and to, to find meaning at your
- 10:59work every day is to, to love.
- 11:02In as much as you do your work
- 11:04as love, it matters.
- 11:06It counts.
- 11:07It's worth it.
- 11:09And in as much as it's not, it's
- 11:11not.
- 11:13It's really, it really is that simple at
- 11:16the end of the day.
- 11:17And at the end of the career and
- 11:19at the end of the life, there's going
- 11:21to be a retirement party for you, whether
- 11:25it's now or in eternity, where people look
- 11:28back and they say, do you see, do
- 11:30you see on that day, during that work
- 11:33project, how this person, how they showed the
- 11:36meaning of the universe to the people around
- 11:38them, they were a word that day that
- 11:40people could read and the word was love.
- 11:43You see this person, when they were going
- 11:45through that, that terrible setback, loss of income,
- 11:48unemployment, difficulty finding work, but how they persevered
- 11:51and how they, they sought the good of
- 11:53others around them.
- 11:54When people looked at them, they saw that
- 11:56word and they could read it.
- 11:57And the word was love.
- 11:59You see that person, how they, they laid
- 12:02down, uh, ambition, chose a lower paying job
- 12:06that could serve others better, or chose to
- 12:08take care of a sick family member when
- 12:10they could have pursued something else, people looked
- 12:13at them and they could read that word.
- 12:15And that word was love.
- 12:20Your life matters.
- 12:22Your work matters because God is love.
- 12:28And as He is, so also are we
- 12:31in this world.
- 12:36Jesus, thank you that you are the pure,
- 12:41true, living love of God, whole without anything
- 12:48else mixed in.
- 12:51Make us more like you.
- 12:54Do your work in us as we do
- 12:56our work with you.
- 12:58Let us be love.
- 13:06Thanks for listening.
