- 0:00Psalm 18 from the book of Psalms.
- 0:03This one's a longer one. I'm going to read through it.
- 0:06And then do they study Bible questions and answers and then
- 0:10get into all of the things that I saw with this one, because
- 0:13again, there's a lot that I saw here also.
- 0:17So let's get started with a prayer first.
- 0:19Dear Lord, please be with us as we read through this.
- 0:22Please open our minds, our hearts and our ears to what you
- 0:26have to say through the Psalm. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:33So this is Psalm 18 for the director of music of David, the
- 0:37servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of
- 0:41the song. When the Lord delivered him from
- 0:44the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul, he said,
- 0:48OK, that's important to know because it does tell us when
- 0:53this Psalm was written. And I believe it's also in
- 0:58Second Samuel 22. So this also gives a history of
- 1:03this. It matches up with this Psalm
- 1:0418, and we know that Saul was pursuing David and David relied
- 1:12on the Lord to protect him during this time.
- 1:16And so we can see here that this is about that.
- 1:22But there are some things in here that I don't think were
- 1:28solely descriptive terms about Saul.
- 1:32And here's why I'm going to say that because we know that all
- 1:36Scripture is God breathed. It's inspired by the Holy
- 1:40Spirit. And so even if somebody speaks
- 1:44words that were written down, who was guiding that God was
- 1:48right? So sometimes, oftentimes the
- 1:53longer I study the Bible, the more that I see literal events
- 1:58also have symbolic and often prophetic significance.
- 2:05I've mentioned this before, like the Passover.
- 2:07That was a literal event that happened and then it became and
- 2:11it was symbolic of Jesus. And I won't go into all the
- 2:16detail of that because this podcast will become really long
- 2:18if I do that. But you can search that if you
- 2:22haven't heard that already from me before or anyone else.
- 2:25But there is a lot of symbolism. I also attended, there's been
- 2:29times where I think maybe Rachel and Leah and Jacob's marriage
- 2:35may also be symbolic of something future and prophetic.
- 2:39It was literal. I mean, he worked for originally
- 2:44it was intended for Rachel, but then he was given Leah, so he
- 2:48had to work another seven years so he could get Rachel.
- 2:51And I just think there may be some significance in that,
- 2:53prophetically speaking, something that I've been kind of
- 2:56just watching and contemplating on.
- 2:59And then, oh gosh, there's just so many things, like even the
- 3:03creation where the 7th day was a day of rest, the Sabbath.
- 3:08And there's also Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath and Jesus
- 3:15gives us rest. So these literal things had
- 3:18symbolic significance. And again, this is there's also
- 3:21a Psalm that we haven't come upon yet, but is in here and
- 3:25I'll point it out when we get there, but that talks about or
- 3:28describes the scene of the cross when Jesus was hung on the
- 3:33cross. And David wrote that in the BC
- 3:36time frame, so hundreds of years before Jesus was on the cross.
- 3:41David is expressing that and David was never crucified.
- 3:45David didn't experience a death like that.
- 3:47So it really he probably didn't even know what he was saying,
- 3:51but it was just something that came to him, you know, in the
- 3:54Spirit and that he documented. So that's for those reasons.
- 4:01That's why I believe that, yes, he was expressing this about
- 4:05Saul, but I also see prophetic things in here and so I will
- 4:11talk about that later. Now I'm just going to read
- 4:14through it all. So you can think about that, I
- 4:17guess as I read, and I will pause only because ever since I
- 4:22discovered that Lord and God have different Hebrew words and
- 4:28English, kind of the English translation does change very
- 4:35detailed aspects of reading the Bible.
- 4:38And so if you want to get the very detailed aspects of reading
- 4:41the Bible, you can use blueletterbible.org, which is
- 4:48great because if you are in the Old Testament, you can go to the
- 4:52toolbars and then you can see the original Hebrew word and it
- 4:56helps you study what that means, where it's used, and a lot more
- 5:03information. So like I said before, every
- 5:06time I see Lord or God now I check the Hebrew to see what
- 5:13word was it really used, what would, what word was used
- 5:17originally. And then, then it, it does help
- 5:22explain. And I'm going to point those
- 5:23things out 'cause those are really important to see here.
- 5:27OK, so let's get started. He says I love you, Lord, my
- 5:31strength. Well, here this is as the Blue
- 5:35Letter Bible would say in an IV version.
- 5:39Yehovah. And as I talked about in a prior
- 5:43podcast, that is God's personal name that was identified when
- 5:52Moses was at the burning Bush. That's when he he found out the
- 5:57name of God was, was that was that name.
- 6:01Now the, the challenging part of it is I don't know that any of
- 6:06us have the correct pronunciation of that name
- 6:10because it was given in four consonants, which we use in
- 6:17English, it would be YHWH and so there aren't any vowels.
- 6:22So if we put vowels in there, then we make it sound a certain
- 6:27way. And that's what happened with
- 6:29the word Yahweh. There was an A put in there and
- 6:32an E put in there and it but that's not how it was given.
- 6:37So if, if that maybe that was given just to make it easier to
- 6:40say, but if you just took YH or yes, YH and then WH and you made
- 6:47it, it was more like a sound than a name.
- 6:50And and it does sound, someone pointed this out, not me, but it
- 6:54does sound like a breath or breathing.
- 6:58And it's interesting because that is, you know, often the way
- 7:01God's names names people, they have significance.
- 7:06And God is spirit. So if he is Spirit and he gives
- 7:11us the breath of life, then wouldn't it be interesting that
- 7:15his name would actually sound like breathing?
- 7:18So it would be something like, you know, like, I don't know,
- 7:24I'm even putting sounds in it, but just like, just like a
- 7:27breath, Like, I mean, what if it just sounds like a breeze or
- 7:31something? If that's the name of God.
- 7:33So maybe we aren't saying the name properly.
- 7:36And then what I also learned, and maybe you already know this,
- 7:43but when I first was studying, I was listening to some Hebrew or
- 7:49Jewish people and they were talking about God and, and, and,
- 7:55you know, mentioning, I don't know, they were when they were
- 7:58saying I was following along, but they kept saying Hashem.
- 8:00And I'm like Hashem, Who's Hashem?
- 8:02Who's Hashem? And so that was something that I
- 8:06had to learn because I'm not Jewish so I had to figure out.
- 8:09So Hebrew Hashem literally translates to in quotations the
- 8:16name. It is the most common way Jewish
- 8:19people refer to God in everyday speech, casual conversation and
- 8:23non liturgical settings and the The term is used out of profound
- 8:29respect and the desire to avoid misusing or taking God's name in
- 8:34vain, which stems from the third commandment.
- 8:37Because God's actual sacred name in the Torah, the four letter
- 8:42Tetragrammaton or Grammaton, is considered too holy to be spoken
- 8:48casually. Hashem is used as a respectful
- 8:52stand in so ha, the Hebrew definite article meaning D and
- 8:57shem, the Hebrew word for name. So where it would be the name of
- 9:05God, it would be Hashem. So it might be easier to just
- 9:09almost say Hashem when God's personal name is used.
- 9:14So I might just substitute that for that.
- 9:18It's it just means the name, God's personal name.
- 9:23So here's what David said. I love you, Hashem, my strength.
- 9:29Hashem is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer.
- 9:34And then it says L, which is or ale.
- 9:39It's El Ale, which is the name, the singular name.
- 9:46For God is my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield and the
- 9:52horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
- 9:56I called to Hashem, who is worthy of praise, and I have
- 10:01been saved from my enemies. The cords of death entangled me.
- 10:06The torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
- 10:09The cords of the grave coiled around me.
- 10:11The snares of death confronted me.
- 10:14In my distress, I called to Hashem, I cried to Elohim.
- 10:22OK, so this is which I cried to my God for help.
- 10:26And my God in, in Hebrew at this sentence is Elohim.
- 10:32That's the plural for gods. And you find that even in the in
- 10:38the book of Genesis at the creation.
- 10:40So there's the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and the three are
- 10:45one. And I will talk a little bit
- 10:48about that. I think that's a great mystery
- 10:50that as much as we want to think we understand it, we probably
- 10:55don't fully understand it, but there is scripture that supports
- 10:59that and it actually it involves us too.
- 11:03I might just pause here for a moment because just in context,
- 11:07it would be really good to to talk about that right now
- 11:11because I'm I have to just look. OK, So if you go to John 17
- 11:20verses 11 and also verse 22, this is what Jesus said I will
- 11:28remain in the world no longer. He's he's talking to the Father.
- 11:32OK, he's talking to God the Father.
- 11:35I will remain in the world no longer.
- 11:37But they his referring to his disciples are still in the world
- 11:43and I am coming to you. So Jesus knew about his upcoming
- 11:48death that was going to happen. Holy Father protects them by the
- 11:55power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one
- 12:04as we are 1. Isn't that interesting?
- 12:09The only way that I can think about this is like one in
- 12:11spirit. They are three persons, but they
- 12:15are one. They share the same spirit
- 12:17because Jesus even said that I say nothing on my own.
- 12:20It's the Father who speaks through me and then he tells his
- 12:23disciples too, don't worry about what you're going to say if
- 12:26somebody challenges you because it will be the Holy Spirit
- 12:30speaking to you. And so when we, and he also
- 12:35tells Jesus tells us that we cannot enter the Kingdom unless
- 12:40we are born again, born of the Spirit.
- 12:43So when we were born of the Spirit, then I believe we have
- 12:47that communication with God, that God is that he speaks
- 12:52through US. You can, I mean, I think I can
- 12:54kind of tell now when people are really, they have the Holy
- 12:58Spirit dwelling in them. There's just there's something
- 13:01different that you can tell about a person and you
- 13:04definitely would see their behavior would be different than
- 13:10normal people. When I say normal, I mean there
- 13:13is a change in somebody's life when they have the Holy Spirit,
- 13:16they do begin to live differently.
- 13:21So anyway, I think that is that's and there's evidence of
- 13:25it. There is the fruit of the Spirit
- 13:27is evidence and then they're also gifts from the Spirit.
- 13:31So those are different ways that it's known if somebody has the
- 13:35Holy Spirit. But what I was thinking about
- 13:38here was also in John chapter 17 verse 22, it said Jesus said, I
- 13:45have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be
- 13:50one as we are one. So isn't that wonderful?
- 13:56Like just to think that Jesus was praying to the Father before
- 14:00his death and he was talking about his disciples, those who
- 14:06believe in him. And let's see, yes, he was
- 14:13praying for his disciples. And this is, I'll read a little
- 14:20bit more just so you can see like who this was spoken about,
- 14:24He says, and now, Father, glorify me in your presence with
- 14:29the glory I had with you before the world began.
- 14:33So this is another part, this is verse 5 that puts Jesus at the
- 14:40creation. I'll read it again.
- 14:43And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I
- 14:48had with You before the world began.
- 14:53So this is where Elohim. That's how we got here from
- 14:58Psalm 18, because Elohim is used in verse 6 of Psalm 18I cried to
- 15:05Elohim for help. Dave is saying that.
- 15:10So going back to what Jesus was saying to his disciples, he said
- 15:15and pray. He's praying to the Father.
- 15:17He says I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of
- 15:22the world. They were yours.
- 15:25You gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.
- 15:32Now they know that everything you have given me comes from
- 15:39You. Everything comes from the
- 15:41Father. For I gave them the words you
- 15:45gave me, and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I
- 15:52came from you, and they believed that you sent me.
- 15:57I pray for them. I'm not praying for the world,
- 16:01but for those you have given me, for they are yours.
- 16:06All I have is yours, and all you have is mine, and glory has come
- 16:12to me through them. And then he says, I will remain
- 16:16in the world no longer. But they are still in the world,
- 16:19and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the
- 16:23power of Your name, the name You gave me, so that they may be one
- 16:30as we are one, while while I was with them, I protected them and
- 16:35kept them safe. By that name you gave me, none
- 16:40has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that
- 16:45Scripture would be fulfilled. I am coming to you now, but I
- 16:50say these things while I am still in the world, so that they
- 16:53may have the full measure of my joy within them.
- 16:56I have given them Your word, and the world has hated them, for
- 17:02they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.
- 17:06My prayer is not that you take them out of the world, but that
- 17:10you protect them from the evil One.
- 17:14They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
- 17:19Sanctify them by the truth. Your Word is the truth.
- 17:26Listen to that. So reading Scripture is really
- 17:28important because this is how we become sanctified.
- 17:32Sanctify them by the truth. Your Word is the truth.
- 17:37As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world
- 17:42for them. I sanctify myself that they too
- 17:46may be truly sanctified. Then he says my prayer is not
- 17:51for them alone. I pray also for those who will
- 17:56believe in me through their message, that all of them may be
- 18:01one. Father, just as you are in me
- 18:04and I am in You, may they also be in us, so that the world may
- 18:10believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that
- 18:15you gave me, that they may be one as we are one, I in them and
- 18:21You and Me, so that they may be brought to complete unity.
- 18:27Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them
- 18:32even as You have loved me. Father, I want those you have
- 18:36given me to be with me where I am and to see my glory, the
- 18:41glory you have given me, because you loved me before the creation
- 18:47of the world. Righteous Father, though the
- 18:50world does not know You, I know You and they know that you have
- 18:55sent me. I have made you known to them
- 18:59and will continue to make you known in order that the love you
- 19:03have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.
- 19:11So this is something that, like I said, I don't know that we can
- 19:14fully comprehend, but it is something that applies to all of
- 19:21us. And, and it, I don't know, I
- 19:25love that part where just how much Jesus was thinking about
- 19:31others even right before his death on the cross.
- 19:34Like he was praying for other people and he was getting ready
- 19:39to sacrifice himself on the cross so that it would be
- 19:42possible for us to be in God's Kingdom.
- 19:45When you think about that, there is definitely a reason to be
- 19:49praising Jesus and thanking the Lord.
- 19:53So going back to Psalm 18, it says from his temple, this is
- 19:59David speaking. He's talking about God.
- 20:02From his temple. He heard my voice, my cry came,
- 20:05came before him into his ears. The earth trembled and quaked,
- 20:10and the fountains of the mountains shook.
- 20:13They trembled because he was angry.
- 20:16This, I think, is a foreshadowing, and I'll talk a
- 20:18little bit more about that. Also, I also mentioned like, and
- 20:24I didn't mention this, but I meant to in my distress, verse
- 20:286, going back in my distress, I called to you.
- 20:31And then he says the name of the Lord.
- 20:33And it's interesting because again, a foreshadowing because
- 20:38Jesus says that he will not return again or he will not
- 20:42return or see them again until they call out, till they say
- 20:46blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord until you know,
- 20:53it's basically giving Jesus a blessing, blessing, you know,
- 20:55when he comes like Jesus said in in your name, the name you gave
- 21:02me when he was talking to the Father.
- 21:04So this all ties together. This is Old Testament and New
- 21:07Testament, tying together what Jesus had said.
- 21:11But again, when I talked about the earth trembling, the
- 21:14mountains shaking, and there was anger there, The smoke rose from
- 21:20his nostrils, consuming fire came from his mouth.
- 21:24Burning coals blazed out of it. He parted the heavens and came
- 21:30down. Dark clouds were under his feet.
- 21:34He mounted the cherubim. We know from Ezekiel.
- 21:38Those are a lot in in the presence of God, I guess the
- 21:42throne of God. He mounted the cherubim and
- 21:46flew. He soared on the wings of the
- 21:50wind. He made darkness his, covering
- 21:53his canopy around him, the dark rain clouds of the sky.
- 21:58Out of the brightness of His presence, clouds advanced with
- 22:03hailstone and bolts of lightning.
- 22:05We're going to see another Scripture, how this description
- 22:08often accompanies God's presence.
- 22:12Bolts of lightning, hailstones are and God sends those, but
- 22:17God's in control. We'll see.
- 22:18We're going to look at lightning and God is in control of that.
- 22:21And also, you know, it's, it's a descriptive way of saying it,
- 22:24but ultimately in truth, God is in, he controls the lightning,
- 22:31He controls everything that happened.
- 22:33He designed this earth, he made, he created everything.
- 22:37And we'll see that emphasized in Scripture.
- 22:40So it's used as you know it. Sometimes it'll say like
- 22:45lightning. So it's used as a, a, a simile,
- 22:48I guess, or a metaphor. And then other times it, I mean,
- 22:55it's, it's more of an maybe a descriptive word and it's not,
- 23:01it doesn't necessarily mean literally, but then in other
- 23:04times it does mean literally. When God actually uses
- 23:08lightning, we'll we'll see that in more depth, but I'll keep
- 23:12going here. The Lord thundered and the Lord
- 23:16here is God's personal name. The Lord thundered from heaven.
- 23:20The his the voice of the most High resounded.
- 23:23He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy with great bolt of
- 23:28lightning. He routed them.
- 23:30The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of
- 23:34the earth laid bare. Now the valleys of the sea and
- 23:38the foundations of the earth. I mean, this is kind of like
- 23:41widespread. It's not talking about when you
- 23:44when you describe it like that, it's, it's pretty significant.
- 23:49The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of
- 23:53the earth laid bare at your rebuke, Lord.
- 23:58And He uses His personal name, God's personal name at the blast
- 24:02of your breath from your nostrils.
- 24:05When the final battle happens, there is really no battle.
- 24:10It's God, you know, consumes them by his consuming presence.
- 24:14And that's kind of what this is talking about.
- 24:17That's why I say this is like a foreshadowing of the very end
- 24:21before the the reign of Christ and let's see.
- 24:27Or before eternity perhaps. He reached down from on high and
- 24:32took hold of me. He drew me out of deep waters.
- 24:36Now deep waters is very interesting because I didn't
- 24:40know if there was some symbology there or what was the actual
- 24:42word. So I looked that word up and
- 24:44that word sounds like my and it's, it's spelled MAYIM and the
- 24:52definition of it is like piss water.
- 24:55So that gives it a different meaning.
- 24:56It's not this like refreshing water.
- 24:59It's like described as piss urine or something like that.
- 25:03I think it even said semen in it too.
- 25:05So it's like not something that you would want to be swimming
- 25:09in. He drew me out of deep waters.
- 25:14He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes who were too
- 25:19strong for me. They confronted me in the day of
- 25:23my disaster, but the Lord was my support.
- 25:27Again, this is God's personal name that was used, and this is
- 25:30also going to be very similar in future prophecy that God is, you
- 25:35know, is the rescuer in the day of disaster.
- 25:39He brought me out into a spacious place.
- 25:44He rescued me because he delighted in me.
- 25:48I think that's just something to ponder on for a minute.
- 25:51He brought me out into a spacious place.
- 25:55Could that be referring to his Kingdom?
- 25:58I mean, in a in a future sense, he brought me out like out of
- 26:04this piss water. And it's, you know, you think
- 26:08about like this. Let's see, this was obviously
- 26:12written after the flood, Noah's flood.
- 26:14But, you know, think about the symbolism of that.
- 26:17And that was God's rescue with Noah.
- 26:21And then there is another rescue where Jesus will come and rescue
- 26:27out of a world that has become very dark and evil.
- 26:31And so this is, and he brought me out into a spacious place.
- 26:36Is this, you know, like, you know, perhaps he brought him out
- 26:40into some Meadow or something. He said he rescued me because he
- 26:44delighted in me because God loves him.
- 26:47That's why he was rescued. And that's why God will rescue
- 26:52those who I mean, he loves. He loves those who love him back
- 26:57is really what it turns out to be those who are obedient to him
- 27:02because that's how we show God that we love him just like
- 27:06Jesus. You know, Jesus took up a cross
- 27:07and we need to take up a cross that shows love to God and there
- 27:13are also rewards in what we for what we do well that David gets
- 27:18into some of that a little bit later too.
- 27:20So verse 20, the the Lord, which is the personal name of God has
- 27:26dealt with me according to my righteousness, according to the
- 27:31cleanness of my hands. He has rewarded me.
- 27:35I did a search on reward. So I want to talk about that in
- 27:38the New Testament. It's kind of like sowing and
- 27:40reaping and that you kind of get what you you do get a payback
- 27:45and often double payback in a good for the good things that
- 27:51that's the way God is historically.
- 27:53We see that in the Bible for I have kept the ways of the Lord
- 27:58and that's using his personal name.
- 28:00I am not guilty of turning from Elohim.
- 28:05That's the plural, the plural sense, the father, son and Holy
- 28:09Spirit. Did David know what he was
- 28:12saying? I mean, why would he use that it
- 28:18you know, there's a lot of questions that we really won't
- 28:20have answers to, but it's very interesting that Holy Spirit
- 28:23inspired words and it was, you know, Yahweh was for I have kept
- 28:29the ways of I, I just don't, you know, Hashem.
- 28:35And I am not guilty of turning from Elohim, the plural for God.
- 28:41All his laws are before me. I have not turned away from his
- 28:47decrees. I have been blameless before him
- 28:51and have kept myself from sin. Sin separates us from God.
- 28:58So David is saying, you know, I'm keeping myself from it.
- 29:03And then 24 the Lord has rewarded me according to my
- 29:09righteousness, according to the cleanness, the cleanness of my
- 29:14hands in his sight. So this is twice that David
- 29:19mentions this. To the faithful you show
- 29:23yourself faithful. To the blameless you show
- 29:26yourself blameless. To the pure, you show yourself
- 29:29pure. But to the devious you show
- 29:32yourself shrewd or sharp and able to make decisions using
- 29:39practical judgement. And then it says you save the
- 29:43humble, but bring lo those whose eyes are haughty or proud.
- 29:51This is interesting what he says, you Lord, and that's the
- 29:55personal name of God. Oh, well, this is interesting
- 29:58too. Not only does it say, it says
- 30:00you Lord, keep my lamp burning. There's lots just in that one
- 30:04statement, verse 28, You Lord, keep my lamp burning.
- 30:09So you Lord is actually Yahweh, Elohim, the plural version of
- 30:16God. So he's speaking the personal
- 30:18name of God and then connecting him with Elohim, Father, son,
- 30:23and spirit. Like a part like you by name,
- 30:27part of the God, keep my lamp burning.
- 30:31We'll talk a little bit more about that because there's the
- 30:34parable of the 10 virgins that might be significant,
- 30:37significant to that. Like you keep my lamp burning.
- 30:42So God is the oil, the anointing of the Holy Spirit that keeps
- 30:47our lamp burning. So right here it says, you,
- 30:50Lord, keep my lamp burning. My God turns.
- 30:56Let's see. I don't know if I looked that
- 30:58one up. My God turns my darkness into
- 31:02light. Maybe that was where it was
- 31:09Elohim with, with your help, I can advance against a troop with
- 31:16and then here he says Elohim, I can scale a wall.
- 31:21So he's and sometimes he's talking about the singular
- 31:24person and sometimes he's talking about the plurality of
- 31:29the one God. It's very interesting.
- 31:32I mean, this is really mind opening to read this.
- 31:35This is in the Old Testament. This is Hebrew and it's talking
- 31:41about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the plural version.
- 31:45So very interesting. And I just don't know like how
- 31:50this could be so hidden from some.
- 31:54But and then he says with my God or Elohim, I can scale a wall.
- 32:00And this reminded me of when Jesus, you know, said that
- 32:04things are possible with God. It's impossible for man, but
- 32:06possible with God. Like the things that happen in
- 32:10the world, things that we think are impossible are possible for
- 32:14God. Now this is again interesting.
- 32:16As for God, his way is perfect. The word is LEL.
- 32:22As for God, his way is perfect. That's singular, not Elohim.
- 32:27That's the singular version of Elohim.
- 32:31And it says the Lord's word is flawless.
- 32:35And so that's and then it's like talking about the personal name.
- 32:42His word is flawless. Now that could mean Scripture,
- 32:45but it could also mean the word of God is Jesus.
- 32:49So if we go, and I think it's in the Gospel of Matthew where it's
- 32:53like, and the word became flesh talking about Jesus, so often
- 32:59God's word is Jesus, Jesus is the word of God.
- 33:02So I think it's just really kind of interesting that, you know,
- 33:06it could just mean spoken word or it could mean Jesus because
- 33:12it says the Lord's word is flawless.
- 33:14He Shields all who take refuge in him for who is God?
- 33:21Now this is a different one that I had to look up and it's
- 33:25Elohah, which is can be God or it can be a false God.
- 33:31So it says for who is God besides the Lord?
- 33:38And that's Yahweh or Yahweh. So and who is the rock except
- 33:47our God? And it says like and who is the
- 33:51rock except Elohim? So that's plural again.
- 33:56So here's another place where I see Jesus is God.
- 34:02Jesus is the rock. And I'm going to talk more about
- 34:05the rock and how it's used in Scripture and how it refers to
- 34:08Jesus. So here it says, you know, and
- 34:12who is the rock except our God? And God is in the plural sense,
- 34:18Elohim. So here in Psalm 18, Jesus,
- 34:24we'll see. We see Jesus right here.
- 34:27It is God, and that's L or ale, but spelled Eli.
- 34:32Keep saying L. It is God who arms me so
- 34:37singularly, who arms me with strength and keeps my way
- 34:41secure. He makes my feet like the feet
- 34:45of a deer. He causes me to stand on the
- 34:47heights. He trains my hands for battle.
- 34:49My arms can bend a bow of bronze.
- 34:53You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand
- 34:58sustains me. Your help has made me great.
- 35:01You provide a broad path for my feet so that my ankles do not
- 35:05give way. All of those verses he's saying
- 35:08it's you, it's you. You do this, you do this.
- 35:11You train me. You 'cause me.
- 35:13You're saving. Help your right hand, your help
- 35:15you provide. That's what Dave is saying in
- 35:18all these. Then in verse 37, I pursued my
- 35:21enemies and overtook them. I did not turn back till they
- 35:24were destroyed. I crushed them so they could not
- 35:27rise. They fell beneath my feet.
- 35:29You armed me with strength for battle.
- 35:33You humbled my adversaries before me.
- 35:37You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed
- 35:42my foes. They cried for help, but there
- 35:45was no one to save them. See, when people turn their
- 35:49backs on God, he's not there either.
- 35:53To the let's see. To the oh, let's see.
- 35:58They cried for help, but there was no one to save them.
- 36:01To the Lord, but he did not answer and he used God's
- 36:06personal name. So when someone's going against
- 36:11his protected one, they may be calling for help after things
- 36:14don't turn out the way they want.
- 36:16But God's not responding to that.
- 36:19He's he's responding to his child.
- 36:22And David is here is, you know, David's the one that is
- 36:26receiving the benefit of this, but not his enemies.
- 36:28And even then, his enemies are calling on someone to save them.
- 36:32But they don't. They don't know God, and he
- 36:35doesn't answer to that. I beat them as fine as windblown
- 36:41dust. I trampled them like mud in the
- 36:43streets. You have delivered me from the
- 36:46attacks of the people. You have made me the head of
- 36:50nations. People I did not know now serve
- 36:53me. Foreigners cower before me.
- 36:56As soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
- 36:59They all lose heart. They come trembling from their
- 37:02strongholds. The Lord lives.
- 37:05He is the personal name of God. There Praise be to my rock.
- 37:12Exalted be God, my Savior. Now exalted be God.
- 37:18That's Elohah. And then my savior is Yesha and
- 37:25it's interesting that Jesus name in Hebrew would be Yeshua, which
- 37:33means Savior. Isn't that interesting too?
- 37:36Yeshua, Yesha, He is the God, and this is singular.
- 37:42Who LL who Avengers me, who subdues the nations under me,
- 37:47who saves me from my enemies? You exalted me above my foes.
- 37:53From a violent man, You rescued me.
- 37:56Well, he's talking about Saul in this this sense.
- 38:00But you could see this in the future, how it could be
- 38:03applicable to another, well, not another, but a the final lawless
- 38:08man that God rescues Israel from.
- 38:13Therefore, I will praise you Lord, which is the personal name
- 38:17of God, Yahweh among the nations.
- 38:21I will sing the praises of your name.
- 38:25I kind of think that God's name is very important and and that
- 38:30when we use a, I know the pronunciation has not been
- 38:35recorded, so it would only be transferred verbally and then
- 38:39written down. And then people don't say it.
- 38:41So then you don't know how it's said.
- 38:43But God searches the heart. And so there is power in the
- 38:48name, and we know there's power in the name of Jesus.
- 38:53Therefore I will praise you, Lord among the nations.
- 38:56I will sing the praises of your name.
- 38:59He gives his King great victories.
- 39:01He shows unfailing love to his anointed, to David, and to his
- 39:07descendants forever. And that's the end of Psalm 18.
- 39:12So I will read the questions and answers from the Study Bible and
- 39:17then I'll get into the additional scripture that my
- 39:20thoughts went to as I was reading through this, if you
- 39:22want to stick around for that. So let's see.
- 39:26The title of David, Psalm 18 is also recorded with some
- 39:29variations in Second Samuel 22. The writer of Second Samuel may
- 39:34have used the Annals of King David as a source, and the
- 39:37inscription in the title of the Psalms 18 also may have come
- 39:42from those annals. How is God a rock?
- 39:45God is firm, solid, impregnable, and immovable, which is exactly
- 39:50the stable presence an emotional man like David needed.
- 39:55I would put a little asteroid by that.
- 39:56I think all people need, but it's kind of funny how they said
- 40:01he's an emotional man. He does express himself.
- 40:05David described a rock large enough for him to hide on top of
- 40:09from his enemies below. During ancient times, a few
- 40:12soldiers could defend a high rock bluff against a much larger
- 40:16army. Perhaps David was recalling the
- 40:18rocks and caves that kept him safe from Saul, and that's found
- 40:23in First Samuel 23. Where was God's temple in
- 40:28David's day? The temple in Jerusalem was not
- 40:31built until after David's death, with which leads to several
- 40:36possible interpretations of this verse #1 the Tabernacle may have
- 40:41been called a temple. 2A later author wrote this Psalm. 3A
- 40:47Later editor changed Tabernacle to temple for the Word is a more
- 40:54general reference to creation as God's temple.
- 40:59David saw God's dwelling place in the heavens as a temple.
- 41:05I think it does talk about that. And David wanted to build a
- 41:08temple. And I think David actually drew
- 41:11the plans for the temple when we read the history.
- 41:15But God said, you're not going to do that.
- 41:16You have too much blood on your hands.
- 41:17It'll be your son who does that, but David did the plans for it.
- 41:23So I think David had it in his mind about the temple and, and
- 41:27when he heard about like his knowing God personally, he knew
- 41:31God's personal name, then he probably, there's, there's
- 41:36probably more revelation that he had about the what's in God,
- 41:41what's not what's in God. I mean, what's in the heavenly
- 41:44realms, Because even in the Book of Revelation, it talks about
- 41:48them coming out of the temple with the angels coming out of
- 41:51the temple. So it's, you know, maybe the
- 41:55temple is just like the description that is used for
- 42:00God's place, where he, you know, his place, his holy place.
- 42:06Why did God appeared in appear in such frightening ways?
- 42:10Because God, by his very nature, so far, so far transcends mere
- 42:15human experience that those who encounter His glory, majesty and
- 42:20power are overwhelmed. Furthermore, the limitations of
- 42:24human language and knowledge, even with poetic figures of
- 42:28speech, do not do justice to such an awesome holy God.
- 42:34What were these valleys and foundations?
- 42:36These terms are possible references to canyons, scarred
- 42:39desert, or Judah are perhaps God's parting of the Red Sea.
- 42:43This image is meant to convey God's awesome power.
- 42:47What is God? What is good about a spacious
- 42:51place? A spacious place is a figure of
- 42:54speech, meaning a place of comfort and ease.
- 42:57Today we use a contrasting figure of speech when we say
- 43:01someone is in a tight spot or backed into a corner.
- 43:05Does God deal with us according to our level of righteousness?
- 43:09In this life? God does not always deal with us
- 43:12according to our righteousness. The message of the Bible, made
- 43:16particularly clear by the New Testament, is that God will
- 43:20reward the righteous as they deserve and punish the wicked as
- 43:26they deserve. Christians also recognize that
- 43:29no one is perfectly righteous. All are sinners.
- 43:32Romans 39 through 20. The good news of the gospel is
- 43:36that Jesus, the perfectly righteous, 1 suffered and died
- 43:40for our sins so that we may be forgiven and we receive the Holy
- 43:45Spirit. And that's how we can become
- 43:47sanctified and get rid of a lot of that sin, not by our own
- 43:52power, but by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 43:56How could David have claimed to be blameless?
- 44:00David was speaking poetically. He considered himself innocent
- 44:03of wrongdoing, at least when he compared his actions to the
- 44:07violence and wickedness of those around him.
- 44:09Another possibility is that David knew his motives and
- 44:12intentions were right. On other occasions, however,
- 44:15when he saw himself in the light of God's holiness, he confessed
- 44:18his sins before God. And it could just mean like
- 44:22David was expressing at that moment in time.
- 44:25He had, he has cleaned up his act.
- 44:28He had he was good at that moment when he wrote this.
- 44:33Why is God sometimes shrewd? Nobody can outsmart God.
- 44:38He is always in control, even when he deals with con artists
- 44:43and schemers, though God's righteous character are through
- 44:47wait, though God's righteous character means he is not
- 44:50deceptive or crooked. He can still deal with people in
- 44:54ways that relate to the way they deal with Him.
- 44:58He can turn things around on them, and that's what I think
- 45:02that word actually is. It's twist or to turn so the
- 45:06stuff that they meant to do actually comes back on them.
- 45:09That's the way God deals with that.
- 45:13Let's see, how could David be so certain of his own righteousness
- 45:18in the Old Testament? Israel could know God's moral
- 45:21will for His people through the laws set forth in the covenant
- 45:25made at Mount Sinai. If David lived in a manner
- 45:29consistent with those covenant stipulations, he could
- 45:32legitimately speak of his righteousness.
- 45:35David was not a perfect perfect by any means, a fact he readily
- 45:39acknowledged in Psalm 51. But while it is a great sin to
- 45:44violate God's law, the covenant provided a means by which
- 45:49confession, Repentance, restitution, and restoration to
- 45:53God and the community could take place.
- 45:56The sacrificial system outlined in Leviticus chapter 1 verses
- 46:01one through 7, or I guess Leviticus one through 7,
- 46:06provided the Israelites with a process by which they could make
- 46:10amends to God and their neighbors when they when they
- 46:13sinned. But more important than
- 46:16sacrifice is a humble and penitent heart that casts itself
- 46:21entirely on the mercy of God. Psalm 51.
- 46:25When we do this, God imputes righteousness to us.
- 46:29That is, he credits the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ to
- 46:34us, 2nd Corinthians 5 so that that righteousness of Christ
- 46:40comes to us through the Holy Spirit.
- 46:45How is God a rock? The picture here is of a huge
- 46:49rock, so hard and strong that no one can damage it.
- 46:53It has been in its spot since creation and will always remain
- 46:57there. This is the kind of God we have.
- 46:59Strong, enduring, trustworthy. He will always be there when we
- 47:03need Him. Do we Christians today
- 47:06experience God's help in battle? Like David, Christians today are
- 47:10engaged in warfare against evil. It is still God who trains us
- 47:15and provides the weapons for the battle.
- 47:18Ephesians 610 through 18 describes the full armor of God
- 47:24as consisting of truth, righteousness, the gospel of
- 47:28peace, faith, salvation, and the Spirit, which is the Word of
- 47:35God. Why did God answer?
- 47:39Why did God answer David's cries but not those of David's
- 47:44enemies? David's foes deserved their
- 47:47punishment for wrongfully attacking, attacking God's
- 47:51anointed king, the man in whom God delighted.
- 47:55Consequently, God turned a deft ear to hear their prayers
- 48:00because they appealed to God too late and out of desperation
- 48:04rather than faith. Was David being boastful here?
- 48:09Not really. Though David acknowledged the
- 48:11victories he had gained and the people who had submitted to him,
- 48:15he gave credit to the Lord for all his sacrifice, all his
- 48:19success. You have delivered me.
- 48:22You have made me the head of the nations.
- 48:25Praise be to my rock. An honest appraisal of
- 48:28accomplishments is not bragging, especially when God is honored
- 48:33as the source of those achievements.
- 48:36And that's the end of what the Study Bible says.
- 48:40Now I will get into the things about the rock.
- 48:44I just thought there was, let's see the rock because Jesus is
- 48:49the rock. And if you want to search this,
- 48:53I, I don't even know where, how there's 52 different verses that
- 48:58talk about the rock and it even starts in Genesis 4924.
- 49:03This is very interesting. Listen to this.
- 49:06This is in when Jacob, I mean Isaac, wait, no, Jacob, when
- 49:13Jacob is on his deathbed and he is giving his blessings.
- 49:24Yes, this is when Jacob, Jacob on blesses his sons.
- 49:30And he says, but his bow remained steady, his strong arm
- 49:35stayed limber, because of the hand of the mighty one, of
- 49:41Jacob, because of the shepherd. That's what we prefer to Jesus
- 49:46as the rock of Israel. Because of your Father's God who
- 49:51helps you, because of the Almighty, who blesses you with
- 49:56blessings of the sky above, blessings of the deep springs
- 49:59below, blessings of the breast and womb.
- 50:02So he is talking to Joseph at this point, and he is saying,
- 50:08you know, but his bow remains steady.
- 50:10So Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine near a spring
- 50:14whose branches climb over a wall.
- 50:16There's a lot of symbolism in this, but again, he credits it.
- 50:21I thought it was interesting that because of the shepherd,
- 50:24the Lord is my Good Shepherd, the rock of Israel, the mighty
- 50:29one of Jacob. This is, you know, connecting
- 50:33Jesus to God, you know, like as part of Elohim.
- 50:40And let's see, there's, there's I thought it was very
- 50:46interesting in Numbers 20, verse 8, when God said to Moses, take
- 50:53the staff and you and your brother Aaron, gather the
- 50:56assembly, speak to that rock before their eyes and it will
- 51:02pour out its water. You will bring water out of the
- 51:05rock for the community so they and their live livestock can
- 51:09drink. This was literal and God said to
- 51:14speak, but then Moses strikes it.
- 51:17I don't know if he was just thinking, well, I can't just
- 51:20speak to it. I have to like hit it and then
- 51:22crack it open. And then, you know, their water
- 51:24will come through And, you know, just being like human, thinking
- 51:28about things human, like if I just talk to it, it's not going
- 51:31to just like pour out water, but think about this symbolism in
- 51:37this. And I never thought about it
- 51:39until just now, but God said, speak to that rock.
- 51:45Do you think God could have been, you know, in a symbolic
- 51:49way that knowing we will read this later in life that speak to
- 51:55that rock, speak to Jesus and he will pour out his water.
- 52:01Remember Jesus at the well with the woman by the well.
- 52:04And he said, I give living water and if you ever have my water,
- 52:08you will never be thirsty again. And here God is telling them,
- 52:13telling him speak to that rock before their eyes and it will
- 52:18pour out its water. And this is like a symbol of
- 52:22Jesus because Jesus is the rock and he's telling Moses to to
- 52:32speak to the rock, not hit it, speak to it, speak to the rock
- 52:36and water will come out. You will bring water out of the
- 52:39rock for the community so that they and their livestock can
- 52:43drink. I just thought that was really
- 52:45interesting. And again, like I said, these
- 52:47are literal events that I think often have prophetic
- 52:51significance sometimes. And kind of interesting too,
- 52:57because then when he struck the wreck twice with his staff,
- 53:00water gushed out in the community and their livestock
- 53:03drank. It's almost like then when Jesus
- 53:05actually got struck on the cross and then water gushed out like
- 53:11his, the living water gushed out, and that's how He saved us.
- 53:15I mean, that's also symbolic. It refers to God as the rock.
- 53:20He is the rock. His works are perfect.
- 53:22And Deuteronomy 32 verse 4, and in Deuteronomy 32 verse 18, it
- 53:30says you deserted the rock. Who fathered you?
- 53:34You forgot the God who gave you birth.
- 53:37So again, here God is connected to the rock.
- 53:42So I'll just maybe find, I don't know, maybe I'll just find one
- 53:45more or so from the Old Testament and then we'll go into
- 53:48like Second Samuel. I think this is probably a
- 53:52restating some of these Psalms, but who is Yeah, for who is God
- 53:57besides the Lord and who is the rock except our God?
- 54:01We talked about that, but this is from second Samuel 22.
- 54:07Second Samuel 23 verse 3, The God of Israel spoke.
- 54:12The rock of Israel said to me when 1 rules over people in
- 54:16righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God comma and
- 54:20there's more to it, but I just wanted to point out the rock.
- 54:26Let's see. And there's just a lot
- 54:28throughout Psalms and Isaiah, Isaiah 17 verse 10, you have
- 54:36forgotten God your Savior. You have not remembered the
- 54:41rock, your fortress, and then it goes on Isaiah 26 verse four.
- 54:51Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord Himself is
- 54:56the rock eternal. Then Daniel, when
- 55:02Nebuchadnezzar, I think it was, had this dream about this statue
- 55:08and Daniel described this is very interesting.
- 55:11I'm going to read Daniel 235 and Daniel 2:45.
- 55:16Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold
- 55:20were all broken to pieces. Those were all the different
- 55:24layers of the statue. They were all broken to pieces
- 55:27and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer.
- 55:33The wind swept them away without leaving a trace, but the rock
- 55:39that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the the
- 55:47whole earth. Now this is a dream that
- 55:50Nebuchadnezzar had, but the rock is Jesus, and he's going to
- 55:55strike all these kingdoms that have formed before him and he's
- 55:59going to become a huge mountain. Obviously that's a, you know,
- 56:03symbolic thing, but a huge mountain is a like huge majestic
- 56:09source of power greatness. I mean, that is what Jesus will
- 56:14become and filled the whole earth.
- 56:17Like that's eventually what will happen when Jesus reigns from
- 56:21here on earth. In verse 45, he says this is the
- 56:24meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain.
- 56:28The mountains probably like God the Father, but not by human
- 56:32hands. So that's by God.
- 56:34And this is where it's Jesus, a rock that broke the iron, the
- 56:39bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold pieces.
- 56:41The great God has shown the King what will take place in the
- 56:47future. The dream is true, and its
- 56:51interpretation is trustworthy. So then some of the things that
- 56:58Jesus said are very interesting. Matthew 724 So now we're in the
- 57:03New Testament, and Jesus said this.
- 57:05Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts
- 57:09them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on
- 57:15the rock. There's a lot of meetings there,
- 57:19like if you know about building anything, if you putting on
- 57:24something stable foundation, it should last and much more so
- 57:30than you put it on sand or it gets washed away or something
- 57:34like that. But if you have it on a high
- 57:36rock, it's going to be stable. And Jesus is that high rock,
- 57:43that mountain, he says in verse 25, the rain came down, the
- 57:48streams rose and the winds blew and beat against that house.
- 57:52Yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock.
- 57:58So there's so many things here. There's like that that's, you
- 58:02know, you can understand it from a builder's perspective.
- 58:05But then you look at the symbolism there that when we
- 58:09build something on Jesus is going to stand when our
- 58:14foundation is Jesus and Jesus is the rock.
- 58:20Let's see what other parts there are to trying to in the New
- 58:25Testament. A few things are these are
- 58:27actually, I'm just trying to find.
- 58:33I think I, I don't know, I feel like I went backwards instead of
- 58:38forwards here. OK, there's still some of the
- 58:42Old Testament. Let's see if there's another
- 58:47one. 1st Corinthians 10, chapter 4, Paul says and drank the same
- 58:59spiritual drink, for they drank from the spiritual rock that
- 59:05accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
- 59:09Isn't that interesting? Well, we were talking about, you
- 59:11know, Moses and the rock and getting water from the rock.
- 59:15And here Paul is making that connection too.
- 59:20And then first Peter 2 verse 8 says and quote a stone that
- 59:27causes people to stumble. Oh, this is not really relevant.
- 59:36Well, a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes
- 59:39them fall. They stumble because they
- 59:42disobey the message, which is also what they were destined
- 59:47for. So yes, this is about Jesus too.
- 59:52So let me just read this to you as you come to him, the living
- 59:58stone Jesus, rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious
- 1:00:04to him. You also like living stones are
- 1:00:09being built into a spiritual house.
- 1:00:14To be a holy priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable
- 1:00:20to God through Jesus Christ. For in scripture it says, see I
- 1:00:26lay a stone in Zion a a chosen and precious cornerstone, and
- 1:00:33the one who trusts in him and Jesus will never be put to
- 1:00:37shame. Now to you who believe the
- 1:00:40stone, this stone is precious, but to those who do not believe,
- 1:00:46the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
- 1:00:53And it says and a stone that causes people to stumble in a
- 1:00:56rock that makes them fall. They stumble because they
- 1:00:59disobey the message, which is also what they were destined
- 1:01:01for. But you are a chosen people, a
- 1:01:05royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that
- 1:01:09you may declare the praises of him who called you out of the
- 1:01:13darkness into his wonderful light.
- 1:01:17Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God.
- 1:01:21Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
- 1:01:27So this is talking about that transformation of people that
- 1:01:31happens when they receive the Holy Spirit.
- 1:01:35Let's see what else I blessed is he who comes in the name of the
- 1:01:40Lord. In Psalm 118 it talks about that
- 1:01:46and when Jesus rode through the to Jerusalem.
- 1:01:53This was very interesting. In Matthew chapter 21 verse 9,
- 1:01:56the crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed
- 1:02:01shouted Hosanna to the Son of David.
- 1:02:06Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the
- 1:02:11highest heaven. And then Matthew 23 he Jesus
- 1:02:18says, for I tell you, you will not see me again until you say,
- 1:02:25blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 1:02:31And that's documented in Luke chapter 13 verse 35, the same
- 1:02:35thing. Look, your house is left to you
- 1:02:39desolate. I tell you, you will not see me
- 1:02:42again until you say blessed is he who comes in the name of the
- 1:02:46Lord. Don't you think that when Jesus
- 1:02:49comes to rescue, people will be saying blessed is he who comes
- 1:02:53in the name of the Lord? And then John also recorded it
- 1:03:00about how when he wrote into Jerusalem they took palm
- 1:03:03branches. This was that what we call Palm
- 1:03:05Sunday and went out to meet him shouting Hosanna blessed is he
- 1:03:10who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 1:03:12Blessed is the king of Israel. So and how I got to that from
- 1:03:20Psalm 18 was when it said in my distress I called you.
- 1:03:24I cried to my God for help. We know that Jesus will return
- 1:03:28rescue and I, you know, he did say that.
- 1:03:34And when I return, it'll be when you say blessed is he who comes
- 1:03:37in the name of the Lord. And then some of these other
- 1:03:40things in verses, oh gosh, 789101112 of chapter 18, it
- 1:03:50talks about the earth trembling, it talks about darkness coming
- 1:03:55and it talks about lightning and hail.
- 1:03:59And all of these things happen when Jesus returns and the earth
- 1:04:04shaking. And so I just, and it's just
- 1:04:07like throughout prophecy, it talks about the trembling of the
- 1:04:10earth. And, and I did look those up and
- 1:04:14I don't know that I'm going to read every single one of those,
- 1:04:17but I did want to just maybe you can look that up because it just
- 1:04:22made me, it was just kind of a parallel to the when Jesus
- 1:04:27returns. And also some of the things
- 1:04:30about fire coming out of the mouth, where fire is also given
- 1:04:38a symbolism of the word of God. And it's interesting that the
- 1:04:43two witnesses from the Book of Revelation, if anyone tries to
- 1:04:47harm them, fire comes from their mouth and devours their enemies.
- 1:04:52This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.
- 1:04:56And they, they are empowered by God.
- 1:04:59And then I did look up lightning and there's 45 different times
- 1:05:06where you might just want to do this, where lightning, just
- 1:05:09search the word lightning. And you'll come up with like
- 1:05:1240-5 different times if you search the NIV version.
- 1:05:16And you'll see that almost every single time that lightning is
- 1:05:19discussed, this is like God's presence is there.
- 1:05:23So this is often how it's described, like the voice of the
- 1:05:26Lord strikes with flashes of lightning.
- 1:05:30Your Thunder was heard in the world.
- 1:05:31When your lightning lit up the world, the earth trembled and
- 1:05:34quaked. And a lot of those are in
- 1:05:37Psalms. But then I did want to read, Oh
- 1:05:40yeah, the Book of Job, because it talks a lot about the
- 1:05:43lightning. See how he scatters his
- 1:05:45lightning about him, bathing the depths of the sea?
- 1:05:50He fills his hands with lightning and commands it to
- 1:05:53strike its mark. He unleashes his lightning
- 1:05:56beneath the whole heaven and sends it to the earth.
- 1:05:59He loads the clouds with moisture.
- 1:06:01He scatters his lightning through them.
- 1:06:04Do you know how God controls the clouds and makes his lightning
- 1:06:08flash? What is the way?
- 1:06:11What is the way to the place where lightning is dispersed or
- 1:06:14the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?
- 1:06:17This is, I think, when God is actually talking to or
- 1:06:20responding to Job. Do you send the lightning bolts
- 1:06:24on their way? Do they report to you?
- 1:06:26Here we are. So this is just, you know,
- 1:06:28talking about like God is in control of all this stuff that
- 1:06:31happens in the and the earth, the things that we see.
- 1:06:35And often, you know, he does send hail as judgement and an
- 1:06:39earthquake, often with the presence of the Lord.
- 1:06:42When he appeared on Mount Sinai, that was also the earth shook
- 1:06:47and there was lightning and there were dark clouds and then
- 1:06:50there was light. And so just you'll see a lot of
- 1:06:54it when you search lightning and just see that this will be some
- 1:07:00things that are interesting to look into.
- 1:07:03And let's see, Oh, the rewards. I wanted to talk about the
- 1:07:07rewards in Matthew Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 and chapter 10 and
- 1:07:17chapter 16 and Mark Chapter 9 and Luke 6 and Luke 635.
- 1:07:24And then Paul talks about it in First Corinthians and then it
- 1:07:28goes all the way to the Book of Revelation.
- 1:07:30But I'm just going to read what Jesus says about rewards, so I'm
- 1:07:35just not going to reference. But if you want to go to
- 1:07:37blueletterbible.org and search reward, you can find this
- 1:07:43yourself because there's a lot of verses, but I'll just read
- 1:07:46the words that Jesus said, starting with Matthew chapter 5.
- 1:07:51Rejoice and be glad because great is your reward in heaven.
- 1:07:55For in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were
- 1:07:59before you. What Jesus was referring to here
- 1:08:02was that he said before this, blessed are you when people
- 1:08:06insult you, persecute your persecute you and and falsely
- 1:08:11say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
- 1:08:16So if there's ever persecution for being a follower of Jesus or
- 1:08:21a believer of Jesus, he says great is your reward in heaven.
- 1:08:26And he says if you love those who love you, what reward will
- 1:08:31you get? Are not even the tax collectors
- 1:08:34doing that? So Jesus is emphasizing that we
- 1:08:37need to love others maybe who don't love us.
- 1:08:42That's where you'll be rewarded for that.
- 1:08:45And then he says be careful not to practice your righteousness
- 1:08:48in front of others to be seen by them.
- 1:08:51If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in
- 1:08:54heaven. So if you're doing it just to be
- 1:08:56seen and to be recognized or to get your reward or applause from
- 1:09:00people, God sees that and there's not really a reward for
- 1:09:04that. But if you're doing it out of
- 1:09:06your heart, there is a reward for that.
- 1:09:10So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets
- 1:09:14as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets to
- 1:09:18be honored by others. If you're looking for other
- 1:09:20people to honor you. Guess we lose our reward if we
- 1:09:24do that. Truly, I tell you, they have
- 1:09:26received the reward in full. So when they get all the glory
- 1:09:31here on earth, that's the reward.
- 1:09:33But if they just do it and don't try to get known for it, God has
- 1:09:39a reward for them. That's what Jesus is saying
- 1:09:42here. And then he says so that you're
- 1:09:45giving may be in secret. Then your Father who sees what
- 1:09:49is done in secret will reward you.
- 1:09:54And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they
- 1:09:57love to pray, standing in the synagogues and on the street
- 1:09:59corners to be seen by others. Truly, I tell you, they have
- 1:10:04received the reward in full. But when you pray, go into your
- 1:10:10room, close your door and pray to your Father who is unseen.
- 1:10:16Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward
- 1:10:21you when you fast. Do not look sombre as the
- 1:10:26hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show
- 1:10:30others they are fasting. Truly, I tell you, they have
- 1:10:33received their reward in full, so that it will be not in the
- 1:10:37next another verse, so that it will not be obvious to others
- 1:10:41that you are fasting, but only to your Father who is unseen.
- 1:10:45And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward
- 1:10:49you. Whoever welcomes a prophet as a
- 1:10:53prophet will as a prophet. Whoever welcomes a prophet as a
- 1:10:57prophet will receive a prophet's reward, whatever that is.
- 1:11:03And whoever welcomes A righteous person as a righteous person
- 1:11:07will receive a righteous person's reward.
- 1:11:11See, God has these rewards that we don't really know what they
- 1:11:13are. And if anyone gives even a cup
- 1:11:17of cold water to one of these little ones, who is my disciple?
- 1:11:23So little ones, the children, those are disciples of Christ.
- 1:11:28Truly, I tell you that person will certainly not lose their
- 1:11:33reward for the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's
- 1:11:39glory with his angels and then he will reward each person
- 1:11:46according to what they have done.
- 1:11:48This is that reaping and sowing truly I well, one of the aspects
- 1:11:54of it another reaping and sowing is more about the gospel
- 1:11:56message. But you know, like you're going
- 1:11:59to be rewarded based on what you do.
- 1:12:03And this is what Jesus is saying.
- 1:12:08Rejoice in that day and leap for joy because great is your reward
- 1:12:13in heaven for that is the is that is how their ancestors
- 1:12:18treated the prophets. So I can't seem to go back to
- 1:12:23that verse. I wanted to see it in context.
- 1:12:26It may be the similar one about being persecuted and then it
- 1:12:31says, but love your enemies, do good to them and lend lend to
- 1:12:36them without expecting to get anything back.
- 1:12:39Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the
- 1:12:43Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked to
- 1:12:50both of them. And just now my Internet
- 1:12:55glitched and I lost my page. So this is another really
- 1:12:59important one though, and it's about lamp.
- 1:13:05I really wanted like you, Lord, keep my lamp burning in verse
- 1:13:0928. And then it's, well, it's
- 1:13:12repeated in second Samuel 22, but that is reminded me of the
- 1:13:18parable of the ten virgins where God is the one who keeps the
- 1:13:24lamp burning through the Holy Spirit.
- 1:13:26And I don't know how long my podcast is right now.
- 1:13:28It's an hour and 15 minutes already.
- 1:13:31So I don't know, oh gosh, if I should read this.
- 1:13:35OK, I'll read this. And maybe that'll be the last
- 1:13:38part that I freed will be the 10 virgins because this I think is
- 1:13:44really important for us to get in.
- 1:13:46And then I'll wrap up this podcast, the parable of the 10
- 1:13:48virgins. At that time, the Kingdom of
- 1:13:50heaven will be like 10 virgins who took their lamps and went
- 1:13:55out to meet the bridegroom. So we know God is the one who
- 1:13:59keeps our lamps full from David's Psalm, and the
- 1:14:03bridegroom is Jesus. So they took their lamps and
- 1:14:07they went out to meet the bridegroom. 5 of them were
- 1:14:09foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their
- 1:14:12lamps, but they didn't take any oil with them.
- 1:14:15So they had the light, but they don't have anything to keep it
- 1:14:18going. They don't have God.
- 1:14:20They aren't in Christ. I guess they aren't.
- 1:14:22They don't have the Holy Spirit, they're not connected to God.
- 1:14:25They're not in the Word. The wise ones, however, took oil
- 1:14:28in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time
- 1:14:33in coming, like Jesus takes a long time to come back.
- 1:14:36And they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
- 1:14:40Everybody's like tired of waiting.
- 1:14:43At midnight, the cry rang out. Here's the bridegroom come out
- 1:14:46to meet him. Then all the virgins woke up and
- 1:14:50trimmed their lamps. So when Jesus does return,
- 1:14:54everybody's going to be like, oh, gosh, wake up, He's here,
- 1:14:56he's here. The foolish one said to the
- 1:14:59wise, give us some of your oil. Our lamps are going out.
- 1:15:03They didn't, you know, prepare. They didn't prepare.
- 1:15:06They didn't stay in the word, they didn't have the Holy
- 1:15:09Spirit. And then they said no, they they
- 1:15:13replied, there may not be enough for both us and you.
- 1:15:16Instead go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.
- 1:15:22But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom
- 1:15:26arrived. The virgins who were ready went
- 1:15:30in with him to the wedding banquet and the door was shut.
- 1:15:35Later the others also came. Lord, Lord, they said, open the
- 1:15:39door for us. But he replied, truly I tell
- 1:15:43you, I do not, I, I don't know you.
- 1:15:45Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the
- 1:15:50hour. Now that was what Jesus told
- 1:15:55about his own return. And so it's something that's
- 1:16:00really important that all of us should be prepared and staying
- 1:16:04in the word. I mean, that's the word changes
- 1:16:08us. I think hopefully this podcast
- 1:16:11today was helpful and open your, I know it opened my own eyes to
- 1:16:14things as I research things. So hopefully it was something
- 1:16:17good for you too. And if you felt like it was,
- 1:16:20share this with someone. And if you haven't subscribed
- 1:16:23but want to stay in the word, please subscribe.
- 1:16:25Thank you. Bye.
