- 0:00Advice from a tree. There's a story behind that.
- 0:06This is your daily message from Chad #1193 to upgrade your
- 0:10mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:12Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:15yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:17Heather Shirey on her birthday. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:21You think you're stuck because you don't have the answer.
- 0:22But upgraded thinking knows you're stuck because you haven't
- 0:25gotten quite enough to hear it. Here's the story.
- 0:30The poet Alan Shamir was going through a difficult time.
- 0:33There wasn't a clean fix, just the kind of weight that bears
- 0:36down on you. So he took a walk, and somewhere
- 0:40along the way, he sat down beside an old Cottonwood tree.
- 0:43Then he did something a little strange.
- 0:45Imagine asking the tree for advice.
- 0:48What conversation would it have with him?
- 0:50What would something that has stood in one place that long say
- 0:53to a man who can't find his footing?
- 0:56He just got quiet and listened, and what he heard became a poem
- 1:00called Advice from a Tree. The tree told him to hold his
- 1:05ground, to reach out farther than feels safe, to remember
- 1:09what he grew from, and to stop and enjoy the view.
- 1:13Obviously, the tree never said a word.
- 1:16Every line came from himself. He already knew all of it.
- 1:20He didn't need a new idea. He needed a quiet place to sit
- 1:24and enough time to hear the truth.
- 1:27That's a story he told himself, and it was better than the 1 he
- 1:30walked in with. The Bone went viral before there
- 1:33were social media. Ended up on posters, calendars,
- 1:37classroom walls, greeting cards. Plenty of people who hung it up
- 1:40never learned his name. Some think it's an old saying,
- 1:44Some think it's Native American wisdom.
- 1:46It's Alan Shamir's, and it's in his book Poetry the Wilderness I
- 1:51am. It's spread because we're all
- 1:54carrying the same question, and the answers are the same old
- 1:58ones we already know. Hold your ground, take the risk.
- 2:03Remember where you came from. Look around at how far you've
- 2:06come. You're not short on advice,
- 2:09you're short on silence. So today, go get quiet.
- 2:13Take a walk, sit down somewhere. Ask yourself the question you
- 2:17keep asking everyone else. Then listen.
- 2:20And if you need to find an old tree to do the talking, the
- 2:24better story to tell yourself is I already know what to do.
- 2:28I just need to get quiet enough to hear it.
- 2:31Tell me a story of a time you found the answer by getting
- 2:33quiet to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 2:37Send someone a text and ask them.
- 2:38What's the question you keep asking everyone but yourself.
