- 0:47This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:50podcast, and we are live at the 2024
- 0:53payer issues roundtable.
- 0:55I'm joined by Dennis Hillen, who is the
- 0:57senior vice president at Oscar Health. Dennis, thanks
- 1:00for being here. Would love to have you
- 1:02start off by briefly introducing yourself and telling
- 1:04us a little bit more about your current
- 1:05role. Yeah. Happy to. Thanks for having me.
- 1:08So I'm Dennis Hillen. I'm senior vice president
- 1:10for our insurance strategy and and product development
- 1:13at Oscar Health.
- 1:14I've been in the industry now for about
- 1:1617 years with Oscar about four and a
- 1:18half years. Before that, I was with Humana,
- 1:21for about 12 years, focused on innovation and
- 1:24transformation,
- 1:25really after some frustrating experiences
- 1:27being a health care consumer, for a small
- 1:30actually, medium sized business at the time, and
- 1:32then a consumer of the product that I
- 1:34decided on behalf of the plan or on
- 1:35behalf of the organization
- 1:37And, wanted to get in and try to
- 1:39figure out how to make it easier and
- 1:40have been dedicated my career since, and happy
- 1:43to be here today to talk about how
- 1:44we are making that happen at Oscar Health.
- 1:47Wonderful. Well, thank you for taking the time.
- 1:50And let's start our conversation
- 1:51with growth goals. So from improving member experience
- 1:55and expanding value based care to controlling costs,
- 1:58payer executives have ambitious growth goals for the
- 2:00rest of 2024 and looking into the year
- 2:03ahead.
- 2:04So in your role, what is your top
- 2:06priority and how are you planning to get
- 2:07there?
- 2:09So we're pioneering
- 2:11a national health care marketplace
- 2:13for the individual consumer. So we see this
- 2:15as a growing market. If you look at
- 2:17the size of the ACA today, it's now
- 2:19over 22,000,000
- 2:20lives. We see it growing to be an
- 2:22even much bigger,
- 2:24component of the way people get care and
- 2:26ultimately the the health insurance market. This is
- 2:28gonna happen not only through growth in the
- 2:30ACA,
- 2:31but also in the way,
- 2:32employers buy their health plans for their employees
- 2:36using something called ICRA,
- 2:38which is a health care acronym for individual
- 2:41coverage health reimbursement arrangement. So it's certainly a
- 2:44mouthful, but the premise behind it is is
- 2:46actually something aligned with what employers are looking
- 2:48to do, and that's to drive choice and
- 2:50reduce cost. So we see that as the
- 2:52way forward. And what we wanna do is
- 2:54then make sure that the health care marketplace
- 2:57operates more like the free market.
- 2:59It's
- 3:00one of the largest
- 3:02industries and and experiences in the country
- 3:04that is sort of divorced from the way
- 3:06people normally think about the decisions they make
- 3:08and the cost that they incur as a
- 3:10result. And so we're looking at the ACA
- 3:13and the individual marketplace as an opportunity to
- 3:15bring these things together.
- 3:18And let's talk about population health for a
- 3:20little bit. So how is your organization ensuring
- 3:23equitable access to care across a diverse member
- 3:26populations,
- 3:27and what strategies have worked well for you
- 3:29here? Or, on the other hand, what has
- 3:31been the most challenging?
- 3:33So it's been said often that health care
- 3:35is very local, and we believe that not
- 3:37only to be geographically local, but also local
- 3:39in the context
- 3:40of people and the communities that they identify
- 3:43with. So whether it be who they surround
- 3:44themselves, their family and friends, people that they
- 3:46feel that are like them, or the experiences
- 3:49that they,
- 3:50encounter in life that define who they are,
- 3:52we think that the healthcare experience should reflect
- 3:54that as well. So when you look at
- 3:55our low cost, tech first products, we have
- 3:57the ability to then bring these preferences and
- 4:00bring these experiences
- 4:01into the way they engage with our product
- 4:03and, ultimately, with the health care system. So
- 4:05if it's linguistic,
- 4:06cultural, regional, demographic preferences, these are things that
- 4:10can be understood,
- 4:11hopefully, all the way from the way people
- 4:12choose plans and make that choice I was
- 4:14mentioning earlier within the way they experience it
- 4:17at every touch point along the way. One
- 4:19of the things we've done is really been
- 4:20focusing on the Spanish speaking population.
- 4:22So we introduced something, a product called,
- 4:25Buenasalud,
- 4:27which is a Spanish first solution for, Hispanic
- 4:29and Latino members that we are launching for
- 4:32the first time in 2025 during open enrollment.
- 4:34So the idea behind this is that all
- 4:36the way from the way the plan shows
- 4:38up in the marketplace
- 4:40through the broker they interact with,
- 4:42through the documents they receive,
- 4:44through the providers we help them find,
- 4:47their experience will be Spanish first and will
- 4:49understand, you know, the culture that they'll that
- 4:51they are coming from as much as possible
- 4:53based off of the information,
- 4:55not only that they choose to share, but
- 4:57even the way that they choose to buy
- 4:58the product.
- 4:59So if you look at the results as
- 5:02that that come from this focus, you'll find
- 5:04a couple things. One, this is based on
- 5:07what we call Ola Oscar.
- 5:09If you go to our website, it's high
- 5:10oscar.com. So it's a little bit of a
- 5:12play on that. You can also go to
- 5:13HOLA OSCAR dot com. It'll take you to
- 5:15a Spanish version
- 5:16of our main website. But what we intend
- 5:18to do with that is to show that
- 5:20there are ways we are being Spanish first.
- 5:22And if you look at our NPS, which
- 5:24is something we're very proud of, across the
- 5:26board, it's around a 66.
- 5:28So, you know, an NPS stands for net
- 5:30promoter score. So it's basically the difference between
- 5:32the people who promote your product versus the
- 5:34people who would not promote your product or
- 5:36the detractors.
- 5:37And we see a significant impact
- 5:39as a result of the Spanish focus where
- 5:42NPS is 87.
- 5:43So if you look at that and translate
- 5:45that to then how we can engage people
- 5:48in their health care journey,
- 5:50the idea that we can meet them where
- 5:51they are is gonna drive a few things.
- 5:531, it's gonna drive engagement, but it's gonna
- 5:54drive retention, and it's also gonna help drive
- 5:57a relationship between
- 5:59our members and the providers that we hope
- 6:01to build a relationship with them.
- 6:04And let's talk about leadership for a second
- 6:07here. So keeping pace in today's dynamic health
- 6:09care landscape is challenging. So I'd love to
- 6:12hear a piece of advice you'd share with
- 6:13peer leaders wanting to grow their businesses while
- 6:16keeping members top of mind.
- 6:18Yeah.
- 6:20My best advice would be to remember you
- 6:22are a health care consumer.
- 6:23And it's amazing as as a health care
- 6:25executive,
- 6:27how often
- 6:28the context of
- 6:29the choices that you are present presented with
- 6:32or the lack of choices you're presented with
- 6:35often get abstracted when you are thinking about
- 6:37your health plan as an executive.
- 6:40And so what I would encourage is that
- 6:42when
- 6:43picking the plan,
- 6:45in whatever experience that you have, think about
- 6:47that in the in the broad context that
- 6:49where you sit in both seats. It's it's
- 6:51amazing how many people, you know, they know
- 6:53once people find out I'm a health plan
- 6:54executive,
- 6:55these can be very smart, seasoned
- 6:58other health care executives.
- 6:59They reach out for help. How can I
- 7:01get a provider? Who's a good provider? How
- 7:03much does this cost? What is the deductible?
- 7:05Like, not necessarily, like, in the strict definition,
- 7:08but what does that mean relative to my
- 7:10situation?
- 7:11And so my encouragement
- 7:13would be to make sure that,
- 7:16think about it. Think about yourself as a
- 7:18consumer when you're making leadership decisions, when you're
- 7:20thinking about your executive role,
- 7:22and then also talk to other people within
- 7:25your network, within your organization and broader,
- 7:28your family, your friends, and then just your
- 7:30extended professional network about their experience. Learn about
- 7:33it. You're gonna learn. It's very frustrating. It's
- 7:35very challenging. People want help. It is our
- 7:38obligation as health care leaders to figure out
- 7:40how to remove those barriers and how to
- 7:42make it much simpler.
- 7:43So bring all that data back into them,
- 7:45the day to day life of being an
- 7:47executive in decisions and choices that we're faced
- 7:49with.
- 7:50Absolutely. Well, Dennis, thanks for being here today
- 7:53and joining me on the Beckert's Health Care
- 7:54podcast. Again, we are live at the 2024
- 7:57payer issues roundtable.
