- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days,
- 0:11but even in the darkness, God was at work.
- 0:14Through loss, uncertainty, and unexpected turns,
- 0:18we discover a beautiful story of grace,
- 0:21redemption, and hope. Join Scott Pauley for this new
- 0:25study, The Gospel According to Ruth. Light for Dark
- 0:37Frequently I hear people say that they're trying to find their
- 0:40place in this world, or they're trying to find their place
- 0:44in life. I think that's true really of every human being.
- 0:48They're trying to, to find a place where they're accepted,
- 0:52to find a place where there's meaning, to find a place where
- 0:56they're loved. Well, can I help you find your place today?
- 0:59Our rightful place is at the feet of
- 1:04the Lord Jesus Christ. The earth is his footstool. He is the creator
- 1:08of the world. He is the Lord of all. He is the judge of
- 1:11all. We know where the story ends. Read the book of Revelation.
- 1:16It ends at the feet of our Lord. But we're
- 1:20in the book of Ruth, and in the book of Ruth, we're learning that that
- 1:23is not just where we're going when we die, that is actually the
- 1:27way we ought to live. This is your place,
- 1:30dear friend. Have you found your place? Can I let you in on a
- 1:34little secret? When you find your place with God, he will help you find your
- 1:38place in every other arena of life. Now, when God is in his rightful
- 1:42place and you are where you need to be with him, the Lord is going
- 1:45to order everything else. And if you don't believe me, let Ruth testify.
- 1:49She'll tell you. And so we return to Ruth chapter number 3. In our last
- 1:53study, we found this very unique expression found repeatedly,
- 1:57uh, that Ruth went at night, uh, she, she pulled back
- 2:01the, the COVID of Boaz, and he's, he's lying
- 2:05on a threshing floor. It's an open place. Uh, there are others, uh,
- 2:09within eyesight and earshot, and so there's nothing undue
- 2:13about what she's doing. And she positions herself there
- 2:17at the feet of Boaz. Why would she do that?
- 2:21Well, in the culture and the custom of the day, she was
- 2:25saying to him, I choose you, I,
- 2:29I love you, I want to, to give myself to you,
- 2:33but it is your choice. That's interesting, isn't it? It is a— it's
- 2:37a place of, of yieldedness, of commitment, but of yieldedness.
- 2:42You should mark these places in your Bible: in verse 4, in verse 7,
- 2:46in in verse 8, in verse 13, and in
- 2:49verse 14. 5 times you find this phrase
- 2:54or some variation of it, at his feet.
- 2:58Now let's take the 2 characters today and I'll show you the place that each
- 3:01of them has. First of all, there's Boaz. And what
- 3:05is his place? His place, that's the place of the kinsman redeemer.
- 3:09There are basically 3 requirements if you were going to be
- 3:13a kinsman redeemer. A kinsman, of course
- 3:17we know that means family, and so they, they had to
- 3:21have that kind of relationship. Redeemer means to buy back, to purchase
- 3:25something, which meant they had to be wealthy enough to have the means to
- 3:29make the purchase. In that day, if a widow came,
- 3:33her husband has died, she may or may not
- 3:37have children, but she has whatever inheritance, whatever belongings
- 3:41were left from her deceased husband, she could be
- 3:45redeemed, but she had to be redeemed by someone who
- 3:48was connected to the family in a way and had the
- 3:53means to do so. This is a kinsman redeemer. So Boaz in
- 3:57the story of Ruth is the kinsman redeemer. Here's the 3 requirements. First,
- 4:01you had to be related. That meant you had to have a connection.
- 4:04Second, you had to be rich. You had to have the ability to
- 4:08make the purchase. And third is very important: you had to be ready, which meant
- 4:13you had to be willing. Now remember, Boaz is a picture of our kinsman
- 4:17redeemer, uh, the, the lovely Son of God who became
- 4:21the Son of Man, a God robed in flesh,
- 4:25the incarnate Christ. And why did he come?
- 4:28He came for one purpose: so he could redeem us.
- 4:32Galatians 4:4: When the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son
- 4:37Made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem
- 4:40them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of
- 4:45sons. So this is Christ. Christ related
- 4:49to us through his perfect humanity.
- 4:52Christ rich with all the riches of God and
- 4:56all the riches of grace and all the riches of glory in Christ Jesus.
- 5:01And then Christ ready to save. Willing,
- 5:04not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
- 5:08Aren't you glad Christ is all? Boaz was just a picture.
- 5:11Christ is the perfect fulfillment. Boaz was the shadow.
- 5:16Christ is the substance. Do you see in this man
- 5:20in Ruth the beautiful symbolism
- 5:23of our Savior who comes to us with a
- 5:28heart that wants to redeem us and hands full of the grace
- 5:32and love of Almighty God to redeem us. What a Savior we
- 5:36have. So what is the place of our heavenly Boaz?
- 5:40He's in charge, friends. This is his world by
- 5:43creation. It is his world by redemption. It will be
- 5:47his world in the consummation. Christ is the one who
- 5:52is the master. And then you have Ruth.
- 5:55If Boaz is the kinsman redeemer, who is Ruth?
- 5:57Ruth is the soul that is seeking to find
- 6:02its place in this world. She was a soul seeking to find her place.
- 6:07And may I just say, the best place in the world is at
- 6:10the feet of Jesus. There are 3 things that mark, uh,
- 6:14this position that she takes at his feet. First, it was a place
- 6:18of submission. It is where the servants and where the students
- 6:22went. This was not a demeaning thing. It was a place of
- 6:26learning and instruction. Do you remember in the book of Acts, uh, the Apostle Paul
- 6:29talked about sitting at the feet of Gamaliel? He meant
- 6:34by that he learned from him. It's a, it's a picture of humility,
- 6:37of submission. It's not only a place of submission, it is a
- 6:40place of trust. She says to Boaz in Ruth chapter
- 6:443, spread your skirt over me. Literally, she said,
- 6:48I believe that you have enough to cover all of my needs.
- 6:52That was the, that was the typology there of the, the phrase that she
- 6:56uses. Spread your skirt over me. Literally, protect me.
- 6:59Remember in our previous study in chapter 2, the picture of
- 7:03coming under the wings of another to be covered?
- 7:06Friend, I got good news for you today. Christ has you covered.
- 7:10His blood has you covered. His grace has you covered.
- 7:13His providence has you covered. His strength has you covered.
- 7:17Come and find your place. Yield to the Lord, and you'll find there
- 7:20all that you need in him. It's a place of submission, it's a place of
- 7:24trust, and then ultimately it's a place of devotion.
- 7:28Remember, this is a book of, of romance and redemption.
- 7:31Verse number 10, he says to her, blessed be thou of the Lord, my daughter,
- 7:36for thou hast showed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning,
- 7:39inasmuch as thou followest not young men whether poor or rich. He said, you could
- 7:43have had any man, you could have chosen any young man But
- 7:48you chose me, and you, you pledged your heart to me. You've given
- 7:52devotion to me. Friends, listen to me. True love is not attraction
- 7:56to appearance. True love is devotion from the heart.
- 8:01Let me tell you where the best place is, the blessed place is.
- 8:04It's at the feet of Jesus. It's the place of intimacy
- 8:08with Christ where you experience the love of God that Christ shows
- 8:12to us and you respond in love to him. Read the gospel
- 8:17records. Do you remember in Luke chapter number 7, the woman with the alabaster box
- 8:21breaking it, pouring it on Jesus? Do you know where she was? At his feet.
- 8:25Do you remember Mary in Luke chapter 10 who chose the good part? What,
- 8:29what place did she take? At his feet.
- 8:32Do you remember in Luke chapter 17, the Samaritan that had been healed of leprosy?
- 8:36And he comes and he falls down at the feet of Jesus,
- 8:39giving him thanks and giving him praise. In Luke chapter number 8,
- 8:43there's a demon-possessed man. When he's made whole, he finds his
- 8:47place at the feet of Jesus. Again, same chapter, Luke chapter
- 8:508, Jairus. Remember his daughter? Christ performs
- 8:55an amazing miracle and Jairus falls at his feet and worships and gives
- 8:58him praise and blesses him. I'm telling you that the
- 9:02greatest place in the world is at the feet of Jesus.
- 9:05Most people are so concerned about who they're over. You ought to be concerned about
- 9:09who you're under. Because if you'll find your place at his
- 9:12feet, you'll have found the greatest place in this
- 9:16world and the world to come.
