- 0:16Speaker 1: Hey, Hey, what's going on everyone? Emily body here? You
- 0:19Speaker 1: are listening to five Minute Friday un Hurdle. I am
- 0:24Speaker 1: amped because I am about to head out to go
- 0:26Speaker 1: to Vancouver. I haven't been to Vancouver since twenty eighteen,
- 0:30Speaker 1: the last time that I ran Lululemon's Seawees half marathon,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and I'm going back up this weekend to run it,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and I'm really looking forward to it. I actually think
- 0:41Speaker 1: I have. This is the last super long run weekend
- 0:44Speaker 1: for me before Sydney, so supposed to be running twenty
- 0:48Speaker 1: on Saturday. I'll run the half, I'll probably change my
- 0:50Speaker 1: clothes and i'll finish off the last bit, but yeah,
- 0:54Speaker 1: I'm really looking forward to it. Also, the weather looks stunning,
- 0:56Speaker 1: Like you're going to tell me that I get to
- 0:58Speaker 1: wake up and wear a sweatshirt in fifty five degrees
- 1:00Speaker 1: and then the day is going to be a nice,
- 1:02Speaker 1: beautiful seventy two. Yes, absolutely yes. For today's episode of
- 1:09Speaker 1: Five Minute Friday, I want to talk to you about
- 1:11Speaker 1: the things that I do before I travel that make
- 1:13Speaker 1: the entire experience so much better for me. And it
- 1:16Speaker 1: starts with cleaning my apartment. There is nothing more stressful
- 1:20Speaker 1: than coming back from a trip and maybe it's a
- 1:22Speaker 1: little dark outside and you walk in and everything's just
- 1:25Speaker 1: like in disarray. I do not have the mental bandwidth
- 1:28Speaker 1: for that. So the first thing that I do as
- 1:31Speaker 1: I'm packing, as I'm getting ready to head out, is
- 1:33Speaker 1: make sure that my space is put together, so I
- 1:36Speaker 1: come home and I feel who at ease on the
- 1:40Speaker 1: at ease note. Something else that I do is I
- 1:43Speaker 1: make two lists. The first list I will make as
- 1:46Speaker 1: soon as I'm done recording this, and that is a
- 1:50Speaker 1: what am I going to do when I sit back
- 1:52Speaker 1: down here at my desk the next time? So maybe
- 1:55Speaker 1: there's a project that I'm working on that doesn't need
- 1:57Speaker 1: my immediate attention over the weekend, or something else that
- 2:00Speaker 1: might be a loose end. By making the list that
- 2:02Speaker 1: I keep on my desk, I can sit down come
- 2:05Speaker 1: Monday of next week and feel a little less frazzled.
- 2:09Speaker 1: The other list that I make is what do I
- 2:12Speaker 1: want to do on the plane. I don't know about you, guys,
- 2:15Speaker 1: but when I tell you, the way that I work
- 2:18Speaker 1: on a plane is so much different than the way
- 2:21Speaker 1: that I work sat here at this desk. I love
- 2:26Speaker 1: if there's something I really love it's an airplane, diet coke,
- 2:31Speaker 1: and focused uninterrupted work time. So to get on the
- 2:36Speaker 1: plane and to sit down and be in my own
- 2:38Speaker 1: little mental bubble with my headphones on, like say less,
- 2:43Speaker 1: it is perfect for me. So I make another list,
- 2:46Speaker 1: and on that list is the stuff that I want
- 2:48Speaker 1: to get done on the plane, and I just teptpp
- 2:51Speaker 1: TEP work my way through that. So I have those
- 2:53Speaker 1: two lists before I head out. I also want to
- 2:56Speaker 1: make sure that my carry on bag, which I have
- 3:00Speaker 1: seriously refined at this point, is packed with everything that
- 3:03Speaker 1: I could need. So what are some of those things
- 3:05Speaker 1: I know that you're wondering for me. It's a mobile charger.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I just got one from Anchor that has a really
- 3:13Speaker 1: good longevity, Like I feel like it stays charged for
- 3:16Speaker 1: a while while charging my phone, I can get two
- 3:18Speaker 1: charges off of it, which is super helpful. And also
- 3:22Speaker 1: other things in my bag, I've got my air pods
- 3:25Speaker 1: pro Max. The other thing that I'm doing is making
- 3:28Speaker 1: sure that I've got essentials for right when I land
- 3:31Speaker 1: at the top of my suitcase. So if I have
- 3:33Speaker 1: a plan for the day, I want to make sure
- 3:34Speaker 1: that whatever I might need, I don't have to go
- 3:37Speaker 1: digging for I hate getting into a hotel room and
- 3:40Speaker 1: immediately like breaking havoc in there as well, so I
- 3:44Speaker 1: try to keep it as organized as possible. And then
- 3:48Speaker 1: the last thing that I do is I prep in
- 3:52Speaker 1: case I get onto a plane and it also doesn't
- 3:54Speaker 1: have Wi Fi. So I told you that I love
- 3:57Speaker 1: the opportunity to get on the plane and do my
- 3:59Speaker 1: dedicated work situation, but sometimes they are going to be
- 4:02Speaker 1: things that are beyond my control. So that is me
- 4:05Speaker 1: maybe downloading a couple podcast episodes that I've been wanting
- 4:08Speaker 1: to listen to, or perhaps right now I'm going to
- 4:11Speaker 1: be downloading a couple episodes of the new ted Lasso.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I'm also thinking about where my iPad is and if
- 4:18Speaker 1: I need to charge that, but just organizing and asking myself,
- 4:22Speaker 1: what is it I can do that I am completely
- 4:24Speaker 1: sustained in my bubble, and that I can if I
- 4:28Speaker 1: want to not take a NAB, use the time to
- 4:33Speaker 1: my advantage, regardless of what's going on that is belowdown.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I don't really feel like I am sharing anything earth
- 4:41Speaker 1: shattering here, but they're all parts of my routine. Oh,
- 4:44Speaker 1: speaking of routine, how could I forget this? I'm also
- 4:46Speaker 1: thinking about my trip before I go. So what does
- 4:48Speaker 1: that mean? It means that if I'm traveling solo, which
- 4:51Speaker 1: I'm going to answer a listener question about that, today,
- 4:54Speaker 1: I am thinking about, Okay, what's the week look like,
- 4:57Speaker 1: what activities do I want to make sure that I
- 4:59Speaker 1: have squared away before I go, and also thinking about
- 5:02Speaker 1: how I want to move my body. I know that
- 5:04Speaker 1: by thinking ahead and thinking forward and asking myself, am
- 5:08Speaker 1: I going to need a book a day pass at
- 5:10Speaker 1: the gym? Do I want to look at what's in
- 5:11Speaker 1: the area and just seek out my options? Then I'll
- 5:15Speaker 1: be in a better place once I arrive. So you
- 5:18Speaker 1: know me, I'm putting those things on my calendar just
- 5:20Speaker 1: like I would an important meeting, because it is an
- 5:23Speaker 1: important meeting with myself, and that way I'm feeling my best.
- 5:28Speaker 1: That's what I'm doing before I'm traveling. If you have
- 5:31Speaker 1: any more questions about this, feel free to either comment
- 5:33Speaker 1: on the YouTube or send me a listener question over email.
- 5:36Speaker 1: It's Emily at Hurdle dot us and also over at
- 5:40Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast and at Emily a Body. My question for
- 5:43Speaker 1: you this week is what is a non negotiable that
- 5:46Speaker 1: you must do before you a travel and also what's
- 5:50Speaker 1: a nonnegotiable that you have to bring with you when
- 5:54Speaker 1: you go? And now I am answering a listener question
- 5:59Speaker 1: from vic Hi. Out of left field here, newly single,
- 6:05Speaker 1: not sure how to make new friends at this moment,
- 6:08Speaker 1: and also looking for solo travel destinations. Where can I
- 6:12Speaker 1: go that is affordable and not going to break the bank?
- 6:16Speaker 1: Thanks so much. Okay, I'm not going to break the bank.
- 6:19Speaker 1: This is a good question, uh I. When I want
- 6:23Speaker 1: to travel domestically, there are two things that I have
- 6:26Speaker 1: done repeatedly that I really like. They used to be
- 6:30Speaker 1: called getaway cabins. I think they're now called postcard cabins,
- 6:33Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken. And there are those small cabins
- 6:36Speaker 1: that I know in the Northeast. There's some in Connecticut,
- 6:39Speaker 1: there's some in the East and West Catskills. And it's
- 6:42Speaker 1: just that really picturesque like bed in a small cabin.
- 6:45Speaker 1: It has like a two burner stove, a small table,
- 6:48Speaker 1: playing cards, a fire hit outside. And for me, I
- 6:52Speaker 1: love to go to one of those and unplug and
- 6:55Speaker 1: journal and read. And also the ones in the Northeast
- 6:59Speaker 1: are in really cute areas, so there's really cute things
- 7:02Speaker 1: to explore, So really the cost is just the cabin
- 7:07Speaker 1: itself and then getting there or whatever you choose to
- 7:09Speaker 1: do in the local area. But it can be really
- 7:11Speaker 1: affordable and a really nice way to unplug. The other
- 7:13Speaker 1: thing that I find myself doing when I just want
- 7:16Speaker 1: to really unwind is you can do Miami in a
- 7:19Speaker 1: really affordable way. There are a ton of different areas
- 7:23Speaker 1: of Miami that you can stay in, some of which
- 7:25Speaker 1: are more up and coming and can be more affordable
- 7:29Speaker 1: for me. I recently went and stayed at this hotel
- 7:33Speaker 1: called The Shelbourne, which was on or is on South Beach.
- 7:39Speaker 1: But I felt like for the price, I got a
- 7:42Speaker 1: really nice stay. I think it was something I actually
- 7:45Speaker 1: booked it with Delta Miles now that I think about it,
- 7:48Speaker 1: So it became super affordable for me because I was
- 7:51Speaker 1: able to use Miles to cover that with their Delta vacations,
- 7:54Speaker 1: not sponsored just to plug. But I stayed at this
- 7:57Speaker 1: hotel called the Shelbourne, and if you are like just
- 8:01Speaker 1: having street tacos and enjoying your time on the beach,
- 8:03Speaker 1: then you can keep the costs pretty low. So for me,
- 8:07Speaker 1: a Miami trip also super convenient because it's only a
- 8:10Speaker 1: few hours from New York City. And I know I
- 8:12Speaker 1: spoke about Delta vacations, But if you become a loyalist
- 8:16Speaker 1: to an airline so much so that, like I also
- 8:18Speaker 1: have the Delta credit card, I get a lot of
- 8:20Speaker 1: perks through that, so I'll get reimbursed or like some
- 8:24Speaker 1: sort of a credit. When I book on websites like Expedia,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I get discounts on trips that I book with miles.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I think it's like fifteen percent off or something. So
- 8:33Speaker 1: just having loyalty to either an airline or hotel chain
- 8:38Speaker 1: can be really helpful when it comes to booking things
- 8:40Speaker 1: on the cheap. Last thing I want to say about
- 8:43Speaker 1: solo vacations is go there to be where your feed are.
- 8:45Speaker 1: So if you're traveling on your own, then really dedicate
- 8:48Speaker 1: yourself to being there. Don't be sitting at a bar
- 8:52Speaker 1: for dinner and like being on your phone and texting
- 8:54Speaker 1: everyone from home and whatever. Like That's just not the
- 8:57Speaker 1: way the purpose is for you to. I only have
- 9:00Speaker 1: time with yourself to date yourself. So I'm big on
- 9:03Speaker 1: bringing my kindle or a book to dinner or my
- 9:05Speaker 1: journal to dinner. I'm big on talking to people I'm
- 9:09Speaker 1: always sitting at the bar when I'm traveling solo and
- 9:12Speaker 1: just being open to the things that are around me
- 9:15Speaker 1: and again being where my feet are. I hope that
- 9:18Speaker 1: was helpful. Those are just some of the things that
- 9:20Speaker 1: I've done in the past. But of course, like I said,
- 9:22Speaker 1: if you have any more questions or if there's anything
- 9:24Speaker 1: I can answer for you, I'm always here to help
- 9:28Speaker 1: out however I can. To make sure you're following along
- 9:30Speaker 1: with me on social over at Hurdle Podcast at Emily
