- 0:19Speaker 1: Today we're going to talk about Labor Day. We all
- 0:22Speaker 1: enjoy having a three-day weekend. We all enjoy spending time
- 0:26Speaker 1: with family and friends. Having cookouts. and just enjoying that
- 0:31Speaker 1: extra day to ourselves. But you know, for some people,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Labor Day means backyard barbecues, cold drinks, sleeping in, watching football,
- 0:42Speaker 1: spending time with family, trying to squeeze three days of
- 0:45Speaker 1: relaxation into about 12 hours. But Labor Day is actually
- 0:50Speaker 1: about a whole lot more than that. It's about work.
- 0:54Speaker 1: About the people who get up every morning, put on
- 0:56Speaker 1: their boots, uniforms, scrubs, work clothes, or whatever it takes
- 1:01Speaker 1: to go out there and earn a living. It's about
- 1:04Speaker 1: the people who keep this country moving. So today, we're
- 1:08Speaker 1: going to talk about Labor Day, where it came from,
- 1:11Speaker 1: what it means, and why maybe we should appreciate that
- 1:14Speaker 1: extra day off just a little bit more. Labor Day
- 1:18Speaker 1: is celebrated on the first Monday of September here in
- 1:22Speaker 1: the United States. And traditionally, It recognizes the contributions and
- 1:27Speaker 1: achievements of American workers. Now I know what some of
- 1:31Speaker 1: you are thinking. Mike, I thought Labor Day was just
- 1:34Speaker 1: the unofficial end of summer. Well, you would be wrong.
- 1:39Speaker 1: For a lot of Americans, Labor Day weekend means the
- 1:42Speaker 1: end of summer vacations, that last big cookout of the season,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and that sad realization that the kids are back in school.
- 1:52Speaker 1: It's also the weekend where people suddenly realize Wait a minute,
- 1:56Speaker 1: summer went by that fast? But behind the barbecues and
- 2:00Speaker 1: weekend plans is a pretty important history. Labor Day grew
- 2:05Speaker 1: out of the American labor movement in the late 1800s,
- 2:09Speaker 1: when workers were pushing for better working conditions, reasonable hours,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and better treatment on the job. The first known Labor
- 2:18Speaker 1: Day celebration took place in New York City on September 5, 1882.
- 2:25Speaker 1: organized by the Central Labor Union. Thousands of workers and
- 2:29Speaker 1: their families gathered for a parade, speeches, and a picnic.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It was a public way for working people to show
- 2:36Speaker 1: their strength and celebrate what they contributed to their communities.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Isn't that amazing? So that is the history behind Labor Day.
- 2:49Speaker 1: We all think it's about that extra day off. We
- 2:53Speaker 1: all think it's about cookouts. But really, it's about work.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Reflecting on all the hard work that we do throughout
- 3:07Speaker 1: the year. And we get that extra day off to
- 3:10Speaker 1: just relax. But anyhow, I appreciate you all being here.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I appreciate you listening. I hope you all have a
- 3:18Speaker 1: wonderful and safe holiday weekend. And I will see you
- 3:23Speaker 1: all In the next episode. Peace.
