- 0:07New York Yankees faced the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park for a Thursday afternoon game on June 13, 1957.
- 0:14Both teams were fighting it out for the lead in the American League.
- 0:17The White Sox were in first place with a blistering 33 and 16 record and four games up on the Yankees.
- 0:23New York was the defending world champs and entered 1957 managed by Casey Stengel and his ninth year as skipper,
- 0:29which included eight trips to the World Series.
- 0:32The Go-Go White Sox were looking to break through a deadlock of five straight third place finishes in the American League.
- 0:37They hired manager Al Lopez for 1957 after he departed from a successful six year stint as manager of Cleveland.
- 0:44This audio recording is from the Chicago Radio broadcast featuring announcer Bob Elson.
- 1:15The catcher Alston Howard will drop eight and then Ray Fincher right-hander Mark Diffmarr.
- 1:21The Yankees will have Richardson in second, McSingle in short, Madeline Center,
- 1:26Mowren in first, Mowren in right, Mowrah in left.
- 1:29Mockin in third, Howard the catcher and Ray Fincher Diffmarr.
- 1:33The lineup for the White Sox, Marvel Phillips in third, Melly Fodge in second place,
- 1:38Melly Manasso in left field, Sean Rutter will do the catching, Larry Duffy in third,
- 1:44Walt Duffer in first place, Jim Ravella in right, Ray Apricio in short, and McFitcher Dilley-Murray.
- 1:51So Phillips in third, Fox in second place, Manasso in left, Rutter the catcher,
- 1:56Duffy in third, Rumpel in first, Ravella in right, Ravella in short, and Ray Fincher Dilley.
- 2:15Dilley-Murray with the record of ten and two is after his eighth straight win today
- 2:22and his seventh consecutive complete game. He takes a stroller string of 23 innings into the game
- 2:29and permitted just one-on-run in his last 48 innings for an iron run average of 4.1 matches.
- 2:37There is a winningest picture in the majors with ten victories,
- 2:40with no fleaks and strikeouts, with 70 in innings fixed with 100 in complete games with eight.
- 2:49He's won and won against New York this year, losing four to two, four to two on May 5th,
- 2:55and winning three-on-one on May 21st. His 48 innings swing in which he's permitted one iron run
- 3:02started with the final inning against Waffingson on May 16th, and next was the empty game on May 21st
- 3:09in which their long run was on Earth. The often earned run scored off-chairs in that swing with Mike Cleveland
- 3:17in the fifth inning on May 3rd.
- 3:39Mark Bithmore, who's pitching for the Yankees, beat Wilson in the socks on May 4th
- 3:45when he took over for a running forward in the second inning.
- 3:48He pitched seven innings at four-head four, allowing two runs.
- 3:53In that game, Cali Burns struck off Dobie in the night to save a three-to-two Yankee victory.
- 4:00He's playing in the back of the field on the corner, and he's leaving in the back of the field.
- 4:07Bobbie Richardson leading off at a ball, a tie.
- 4:12Said Williams, just today, three-run boomer for Boston in May 3rd.
- 4:23He's set again in the midst of Bobby, a swing and a face-set into left field.
- 4:28A single on the ground into left field is very sharply, and that's going to bring up the shortstop, Gil McDougal.
- 4:40There is the first hit of the game.
- 4:44Donovan is going to open the Washington series tomorrow night.
- 4:48He's won four of his last five, and has pitched complete games in his last four outings.
- 4:58The infield is Fonko Phillips at third, Louis at short, Fox at second, Grip all at first.
- 5:04The offfield, Manoso in left field, Dobie in center field, and Rivera in right field.
- 5:11Yankee base runner at first, and a throwover, and he's back in time.
- 5:25Gil McDougal will be followed by Mickey Maddell.
- 5:31Landed with two homers last night, one in the first inning, and then in the ninth inning,
- 5:37we lined one batting left-handed, and at the far corner of the bullpen in left-sutter field.
- 5:47Billy's getting inside, and here's a pitch to McDougal's right across the knee.
- 5:53Gil McDougal, number 12, on the back of his way uniform.
- 6:06Base runner at first base, staying pretty close to the bag, that's Bobby Ritzigul.
- 6:11The offfield is playing McDougal, straight away.
- 6:15Here's a box that's going foul on the ground to the left of the plate.
- 6:25The Yankees are averaged better than 30,000 per day on this pitch, playing before a total of 271,000 in nine days.
- 6:35Gil McDougal, shortstop, waiting for Billy first to get set, and a low curve, it's a ball.
- 6:51While it was really close to the ball to first base, the figure to be a little bit risky because the base runner was pretty close to the bag.
- 6:59First thing, there's a pitch to McDougal, they swing and there's a high ball coming back and really up there, and we still have a run into it.
- 7:14We're going to have a run into it.
- 7:27Billy first, working on Gil McDougal, with the Yankee base runner at first, and a swing and a high ball that's going out of play way off to the right.
- 7:38Now they play down to our Larry Knapp, who's getting out to Whiskroom and cleaning the plate.
- 7:46McDougal's batting average, 295, he has 24 runs out of them, and it's a free home run. He'll be followed by Mickey Mett.
- 7:56Again, here's how to sign the runner going, swing and a miss, go to second base, and it's out a double play.
- 8:06Billy first, took the ball from Lawler, McDougal struck out, and Richardson was doubled at second base, and for the left side, that is their 48 double play.
- 8:23There's Mettles.
- 8:36Line up in the worktips of Mettles is a fast ball, it's off the inside corner of the knee, and ball one.
- 8:43Mickey Mettles, with 39 runs out of them, and 18 homers, takes the ball, it's moving close, all good.
- 8:57Now there's two out, and nobody on in the first inning. Richardson singles, McDougal struck out, and Richardson died at sixth.
- 9:09And a swing and a base hit, set a two. Mettles singles, right through the center of the diamond, while the Yankees second base.
- 9:19That's going to bring up the first baseman, Bill Scowling.
- 9:24There's Scowling, with a batting average of 312, he has 36 runs out of them, and is at 10 homeruns.
- 9:44First pitch to him is a fast ball, it's a little bit too low, and in close, a ball.
- 9:57In the National League, it's since about a two in Pittsburgh, two at the end of five.
- 10:02At child six, the Cubs three at the end of three, and Milwaukee four, Brooklyn nothing at the end of four.
- 10:10Scowling takes a high inside fast ball.
- 10:17Ball two. Already the plate on fire, Larry Naff is getting a new supplier of baseballs.
- 10:31Billy Dupy and I on the baseball, who is Mickey Mattles, and a nice strike, right across the knee.
- 10:46In the American League, it's Boston's four, Cleveland one. That game is in the third inning, Williams gets to the three run of the homer.
- 10:56Pitch to Scowling is a high inside fast ball for ball three. The on deck hitter is Hank Fowler.
- 11:11Ball three and strike one, we're in the first half of the first inning.
- 11:17When Billy takes the base runner, fires over there, and he's back inside. Phillips is third, Louis is short, Fox is second, go forward first.
- 11:27Ball three and a strike one count on Scowling, and a swing and a foul six.
- 11:34Billy wearing number 19 on the back of his white uniform.
- 11:45A one in this pitcher in baseball with 10 victories against two lost.
- 11:55Working on Moose Collins, big first place from the New York Yankees.
- 12:01Mickey Mattle over the first base, and a swing and a foul with Mattle running, the end is.
- 12:14The on deck hitter is the right fielder, Hank Fowler. Fowler has a 269 running out of it.
- 12:21Scowling has three hits in the game last night, including a tremendous homer.
- 12:28Ball three, strike two and a curve, very high foul, and left the line, but also raking into the corner, just couldn't reach it.
- 12:41And he still has a ball three and a strike two count.
- 12:51There was a long line up, but Manoso made a very nice try for it. He ran over the foul line into the corner,
- 12:59reached way into the stands, but couldn't get a shot that far, and we still have a three two count.
- 13:11Billy gets the new base foul and ruffs it around in his hands.
- 13:17Manolo first, here's the pitch, swing and a high foul again out of play.
- 13:25This time it's down the first base line, the Boston Cleveland game has been delayed by rain.
- 13:37Here we've had a lot of rain all night, a lot of rain this morning, and it's still very cloudy, and a very light drizzle coming down.
- 13:48The pitch to Scowling, a line drive ahead into left-setter field, Mickey Battle raking around to third,
- 13:56and that was a hard hit foul by Scowling into left-setter field, and pass fielding by Manoso held Battle at third.
- 14:06That's going to bring up the right fielder, Hank Bauer.
- 14:17Unfortunately, Mickey will go ahead into a double play, and the Yankees would have a runner to.
- 14:28Now they have runners on first and third, and here is the right fielder, Hank Bauer.
- 14:41With 26 on the eyes, and a right-hand winner is facing Billy Pierce.
- 14:49Mickey Battle over on third base, and Scowling on first base, and Scowling is really red hot.
- 14:59Now they put your hands to the side, and a little bit too low, the first one to Bauer, go one.
- 15:08First hand comes the first inning.
- 15:12Richard from Kendall, Mickey Battle moving into a double play, Mattle's single to third,
- 15:17Scowling line against the left-setter, and Mattle breaks the first.
- 15:22So we have big runners on first and third with two outs. There's a swing and a foul back.
- 15:35Then the field announcer is taking two supply of baseballs up to the plate on fire.
- 15:43Larry Matt.
- 15:48We have a pretty nice call on hand today for what has been a useful day, playing hard all day.
- 15:56There's a strike from the new fielder. All one of the strike-through cops will hang far.
- 16:11But open up an infield, thank you runners for first and third, you're off.
- 16:18So he first again looks down at the water, getting a side, a curve, and a three.
- 16:28In that inning, there were no runs, there were three hits, and there were two men left on the base.
- 16:40So fans will score at the end of the first pass of the first inning. The Yankees no runs and three hits.
- 16:48The Red Sox are now coming to bat.
- 16:52And for going into the last of the first inning, there's Phillip Phillips.
- 16:56He'll be followed by Nelson Fox, and then many ministers.
- 17:01Right under on the mound, the scholar on the first, Richardson at second, McDougall at short, and Markon at third, Paul Tiff.
- 17:10Haggbauer in right field, Madeline Sussfield, Vera in left field, Ditmar the pitcher, and Pollard again the catcher.
- 17:25Phillip, who's been on a hitting Jag, has raised his average to 270 seconds.
- 17:32And a swing of an inspector.
- 17:40Nobody on and nobody out is the last of the first inning.
- 17:47Ditmar again leans way forward on his right foot.
- 17:54Here comes the pitcher and outside of all one and two.
- 18:04Well, Phillip, trying to get it started here on the first inning.
- 18:10Paul won in a strike two count on him and a swing on the next. He stuck him out.
- 18:18Now let's get in a station break. This is a WCFO, the father-light sock, baseball and baseball.
- 18:27This is WCFO, the vice of labor in Chicago.
- 18:37Big round for Nully Foss with a 352 body average, 20 runs about an end and three on the ball.
- 18:48Ditmar fixing his shoe, Nully scrapes to the cross, they pitch in rubber a couple of times.
- 18:56Here's they pitch the box, it's a little bit too low and above.
- 19:05It's a very big hit last night and it was his first hit of the series.
- 19:12Here's a ball with Paul Jan Ball two.
- 19:20Billy Martin playing third, he'll make doodle over it short.
- 19:24Bobby Richardson at second, and Bill Scowren at first.
- 19:29That's the empty infield.
- 19:33Here's a ball that's a little bit too low.
- 19:40Jim Rivera had a big night last night. He had a single or couple and a long home run.
- 19:50Paul free the box and a spike right in across the knee.
- 20:00In the seven games played against the Yankees today, both clubs have scored the same number of runs 24.
- 20:07The Yankees lead the series 4-3, 4-2-1.
- 20:18He's going to bring up an off-doll. Bobby Bell comes in from left field and gets his glasses and he's second by some power.
- 20:33He'll have the umpire hold his sunglasses and his pocket.
- 20:38Seller shining again. And there's still a 10-point drizzle coming down. Here's a ball that sends the catcher forward.
- 20:56The outfield is deep and around to the left. And a fast ball that's a little bit too low and in close. Ball two.
- 21:10Biffmars already complaining to the play-off fire learning half about the calls. A dozen such players have shared hero roles in their 33-win.
- 21:29Here's the next pitch there. And a swing and a tackle on the first place line. And the fair ball picked up by Howard for the first place in.
- 21:43There was a little catch on the first place line. But with a fast man running, the Yankees were hoping it would roll foul.
- 21:51But they thought that it was going to stay in. Howard picked the ball up and fired it, but two late. And there's a base there.
- 22:04Here's Lollard. Well, the Sharks have a chance now. A scoring chance in the first inning.
- 22:14Howard running 244. He has 31s batted in. And he's hit five home runs.
- 22:25He went on. Here comes the pitch to him. A swing and a foul on the ground right out in front of the play.
- 22:33He swung at the ball. The ball slipped down the bat. Hit him on the leg. And then bounced out in front of the play.
- 22:41Now they catch Howard and the pitcher did far, having a check. Out near the pitcher's circle. And the play-off far walks out and gives him a new ball.
- 22:52So already in this first inning, which is not over, we have had four hits. Three by the Yankees, one by the White Starks, box walk, and we have two men out.
- 23:15Sherman Lauer with a spike one count on him and a little bit too low a ball, one and one.
- 23:26Dick Morrow's wearing number 28 on the back of his gray uniform. Now he is kicking the pitching rubber. Trying to get it smooth down to his liking.
- 23:45Morrow hoping to get a hold of one here and get the shots out in front. Here's a high fly ball to center field. Morrow coming on. He's under the ball. Should get it easily. And he does.
- 23:56That's going to bring up the right fielder, Larry Phillips. Here's Larry Phillips with a 246 batting average. He's had 24 runs batted in and he's hit four on the bat.
- 24:23Now he's up in there. Two men out and two off. And the first pitch to him is swing and a foul on the ground.
- 24:39Nellie Fox who has hit safely in 15 straight games has now connected in 16 out of 17. Morrow Phillips who had an 11 game streak, now recently, has hit safely in 15 out of 16 games.
- 24:55Wraith's his average now close to 300. There's a swing and a foul on the ground.
- 25:09Runners at first and second. A two strike count on Larry Dovey. Two off. No score in the ball game. And we're still in the last of the first two.
- 25:18And son is out again. Here's a pistol and a swing and another foul.
- 25:28In their 33 victories, the watchdog has now become so behind a break of tie in late for extra innings on 22 of the 33 of the six.
- 25:40And only 11 as they've been able to jump off to an early lead and maintain it throughout the game. 16 times it went to Raleigh to overcome a deficit of wind.
- 25:51And in six games they were forced to break a tie in the late for extra innings.
- 25:57Which for Dovey, now he goes a high fastball in close. Here's Fox moving up and that's a wild fish. A high fastball and now Thitspire and Dovey are going after each other.
- 26:12Here's Chicovo and Dovey really followed him to the left hook and Thitspire went down and now there's a wild affair as you call it.
- 26:20You should see this. The umpires all get in there. Dovey landed a left hook on Thitspire and dropped him.
- 26:29And boy that was a beauty that traveled only about a foot. The entire Yankee bench and the entire watchdog bench is on the field.
- 26:39And here's Country's broader and Bradwell going to it now. And they're having quite a slamble. Everybody trying to break this up.
- 26:47Now what he's brought is tackle drop ball and Casey Stengler's also tackled him and boy this was really something.
- 26:57I've never seen anything worse than this out first. Even Casey Stengler's being shoved around over there. This is really something.
- 27:09Now let's see what the umpires are going to do about it. The chances are that both Thitspire and Dovey will be put out of the game.
- 27:18That's almost for sure. Now Lopez is talking with Casey Stengler and the police and the umpires are trying to restore order.
- 27:32And now let's see what they've got to do. That was a high-fac ball that was forced to Dovey's head and then back to the screen and the runners advanced on a wild trip.
- 27:44Thitspire has gone back out to the mound and we're just going to have to wait and see what the umpires are going to do or if anything.
- 27:53But this was a tremendous out first.
- 28:04Now the umpires are telling the players to go back to the dugouts and let's see what is going to happen.
- 28:20It started when Larry Dovey and Thitsmar said something to each other about that fastball that had come in close to Larry Dovey's head.
- 28:32When Thitsmar went for Dovey and Dovey dropped him with a hard left hook he really went down.
- 28:45Now we're going to find out here whether they're going to leave these from us in the game or not. They haven't done anything yet.
- 29:00The four umpires are in a huddle between the plate and third base.
- 29:06They're trying to decide what should be done. If any penalty is dealt out, you should get it.
- 29:18The fellas who started it were Thitsmar and Dovey. Thitsmar is back in the pitcher circle. Dovey is standing outside the batter's box.
- 29:27So neither one of them seems to think that they're going to be put out of the ballgame.
- 29:32They're going for each other again now. Dovey Martin is going for Dovey.
- 29:38This thing is starting all over again.
- 29:47This is starting all over again.
- 29:5024th, Bankfarr, Collins, Martin, all out there on the field and the umpires don't get their situation in hand and do something, meet up, whatever penalties they feel are justified, and get this ballgame back into a ballgame rather than a ball and a free throw.
- 30:15So as yet, we've seen no evidence that either Thitsmar or Dovey are out of the game.
- 30:22And that time, Dovey Martin made a rush for this.
- 30:26Albinosa is firing him down. Reverse talking with Whitey Ford and Farr.
- 30:36But it would almost seem positive that somebody is going to draw a penalty for this break-in at Chicago. This is one of the best fights Chicago's had in years.
- 30:47Now we'll find out who's out of the game.
- 30:54There's Dovey coming out to Parkwood right. No pass is out there. Telling the boys to get off the field. But Dovey seems to be anxious to get out somebody.
- 31:06Dovey Martin, I think, has been thrown out of the game by Ronald.
- 31:17Dovey is still standing upon break. Now we're going to get a decision as to who is out of the game.
- 31:33Dovey Martin is being restrained by the Second Base Empire rights. And I think that Ronald pointed as Martin threw him out of the game.
- 31:45Now he should be out. Howlary Mapp is explaining to Lopez who else is going to be out of this affair. Thitsmar is still on the mound throwing.
- 31:57And let's see what's going to happen. There goes Dovey Martin. He's out for sure.
- 32:10Dovey Martin has been put out of the game. That's one that's gone. Now let's see who else is out.
- 32:16The White Sox are doing quite a bit of arguing over here.
- 32:21Walt Ruffalo is in quite a...he's storming at the Titan Fire. So maybe he's going to be put out for that part of the fight that he got.
- 32:35But here the only player definitely thrown out is Billy Martin.
- 32:43And there it looks now. The guys that started it all are going to stay in the game.
- 32:52Well, Donless was a pretty good throw on it last time.
- 32:55While I think the best way to do that is to make sure that the Titan Fire is taking into consideration the jet use he has made.
- 33:06That's what Mr. Ditsmar would be taking out. That seems to be what he was indicating to the hotline.
- 33:11And as you say apparently they're going to be on touch. I know there's a certainty that's pointing to Scotland because they're indicating that Ruffalo might be thrown out.
- 33:18And he was saying, well what about Scotland? Because he was about to pile through and Ruffalo got a pretty good shot out of it.
- 33:25And looking through the video glasses that Ruffalo and his sport have. They're right in front of his sport.
- 33:29And he thinks they have a pretty healthy shot.
- 33:31Well, I don't know what their reason is, but I would think that they would start taking two basic offenders and if anything, he'd cross to Mr. Ditsmar and Billy out of the house.
- 33:42But they're definitely not going to do that. And here is the front of John Sullivan. And according to Billy Markman's bill,
- 33:49they're going to die.
- 33:51And probably they will survive.
- 33:56But I don't know how like Dolby is out too. Rice is talking with Dolby.
- 34:01And Dolby is much in a violent close-up. And I think he is going to be thrown out of the game.
- 34:07There goes Markman out.
- 34:12That's the case, but there's Lopez. He's still got the five. Not going to get up to it.
- 34:19Very Dolby.
- 34:22And Billy Markman.
- 34:24And Lopez is doing so much arguing that there's a chance that he may be out of the game too.
- 34:32Well, it's been quite a few on top of the lane. And the delays.
- 34:42And then a terrific fight out here.
- 34:45The customers have really had their money worth in their run-stores.
- 34:50Well, this is the big half of the series.
- 34:53And I think he's been in trouble. He appears like this. And our product here,
- 35:03Debbie is just got out of the game. He's got the right back to that right here.
- 35:07And I will try that. He has been knocked out of the game.
- 35:09Ripple is still out there.
- 35:11Ripple got into a little extra-curricular activity. He was involved in the main season of fight.
- 35:14But he's got to delay them to country slaughter. And that's a terrific thing to say.
- 35:18And it's just a great thing to do out there. Yes, we'll have to have a word with Big Water.
- 35:23He should have picked John Baller, not for the attention of his fans.
- 35:26He will really go on to it like a merry-go-round.
- 35:29Ripple is still in the ballgame. He's just went into the Yankee dugout to get a drink of water.
- 35:34And he's coming back out again.
- 35:36And right now, it's just like they're just two out.
- 35:40There are Billy Markman and Larry Dolby.
- 35:43They're going through the only two that are going to be thrown out of the game.
- 35:48John and John Sullivan.
- 35:50The head of the police detail is back on the field after getting Billy Markman up in the Yankee clubhouse.
- 35:59There's no score.
- 36:02We're in the last of the first inning. Two out.
- 36:07And it looks like we will have a picture of Larry Dolby.
- 36:12John on Billy with ball one and spike two.
- 36:19Walt Gugl has evidently not been put out of the game because he is the on-deck hitter.
- 36:26And he's still out there, carrying a couple of backs around.
- 36:29And doesn't look as though he has any attention going off the field.
- 36:41Two on each side. Gugl has been chased two.
- 36:44Dolby has been chased. Billy Markman and Country Squad.
- 36:49The Country Boy has also been chased.
- 36:53So that's it.
- 36:55Now the manager, one of them still out there in the field.
- 37:06And that is Al Lopez, the light star. And Gugl is it.
- 37:17Markman and Country Squad are been chased.
- 37:19And Dolby and Gugl have been chased.
- 37:22And now Al Lopez is out there talking with the play-off player.
- 37:26And he is going to have to revise his lineup.
- 37:35Jeff goes to show you the intense feeling on both of these clubs.
- 37:40Not against each other necessarily.
- 37:43But a battle like this with these two teams battling for the lead.
- 37:47And the Yankees World Champion in second place.
- 37:52And the White Sox sailing ahead.
- 37:54Five games in front. There's naturally quite a bit of feeling.
- 37:57I don't think it's anything of a personal nature.
- 37:59But it's something that can pop out in a hurry as it's been here today.
- 38:02I think it indicates a matter of circumstances.
- 38:05Because if that hadn't been a wild pitch,
- 38:07the pitch wouldn't have had any necessity to come down to the plate.
- 38:10And, finally, all of this wouldn't have played up.
- 38:12Down with that left foot that Dolby threw,
- 38:14I think we're going to have Jim Norris look him over.
- 38:17But that's what's done of it.
- 38:19Because it was a wild pitch with two strikes on both of these.
- 38:22And the pitch sailed away from Elston Howard,
- 38:24handling the letters for a pass in second and third.
- 38:26And naturally, the pitchers were aware to cover the plate.
- 38:29So the pitch marked as the plate after every passing
- 38:32right by the high inside center and high Dolby.
- 38:35And it was a back time that the pitch was rather harmless
- 38:38and very amateur in nature.
- 38:40And suddenly, words were exchanged and,
- 38:42oh, light went out.
- 38:46And as we've said before,
- 38:48all this is part of a great game of baseball.
- 38:51I go along with that idea.
- 38:53And as Bob pointed out,
- 38:55baseball is when they need one another
- 38:57off the field or even before the game.
- 39:00The best of friends
- 39:02who may exchange five-poussons please,
- 39:04they like to ride one another.
- 39:06That's always part of the game,
- 39:08to partner the other person, the other player,
- 39:10try to get them to stand if you possibly can
- 39:12and upset them a little bit.
- 39:14Again, little psychological advantage perhaps,
- 39:16but nevertheless,
- 39:18we're all in this business together
- 39:20with the idea of making a living out of the game as well.
- 39:23Without the idea, it's time to do a part of the other player
- 39:26and start with him,
- 39:28our gentleman Mark Gessin,
- 39:30who has today turned out to be Dave.
- 39:32The spark was there and suddenly fired up.
- 39:35We were asked by the other delay
- 39:37and this had caused by the weather at all.
- 39:40Dave Pilly.
- 39:42On the left side,
- 39:44Robert Diggs.
- 39:46Dave Pilly will be guiding for David.
- 39:50Dave Pilly.
- 39:52Five-eighth minutes was the initial time there.
- 39:56It was also 28 minutes
- 39:58now they're set to play again.
- 40:00Andy Curry has gone in at third
- 40:02and here's Dave Pilly,
- 40:04who's stepping up with a ball,
- 40:06wanting to strike two-count on him.
- 40:08Stock space runners at second and third
- 40:10and two-off in the last of the first inning.
- 40:13Here comes the pitch to him,
- 40:15strike three and that inning is over.
- 40:18So Pilly took one swing and the inning is over
- 40:21and it's no runs, one hit, a walk,
- 40:24and there were two men left on the pitch.
- 40:27Fans at the end of the first inning
- 40:29of this ball game at Chicago
- 40:31with plenty of sidelines,
- 40:33it's the Yankees no run, three hits,
- 40:36the White Stock no run and one point.
- 40:40Fans were going into the second inning.
- 40:43It's nice to have Bob Oakley out here with us today
- 40:46of the Oklahoma Oil Company.
- 40:48We have a nice crowd on hand
- 40:51before they've had their money's worth already.
- 40:54This was really something.
- 40:57The second inning it'll be Yogi Berl,
- 41:00Andy Curry in place of Billy Martin,
- 41:03and then the catcher, Elston Howard.
- 41:09There's the Yogi man,
- 41:11he's strictly a peaceful fellow of the Yogi guy,
- 41:13he tries to get the fellas apart,
- 41:16Manosto is doing the same thing,
- 41:18he was trying to break it up.
- 41:25Now they have Billy playing first,
- 41:28Dave Pilly is playing first,
- 41:37Matt Pilly is playing third,
- 41:39and Phillips is drawn in the center field.
- 41:42So here's the lineup now, Manosto in left field,
- 41:45Elston in center field, Rivera in right field,
- 41:50after a little bit of third,
- 41:52Louis at short,
- 41:53Fox in second, Billy at first.
- 42:01Here's the Yogi man,
- 42:03No scores, we start the second inning of the ball game.
- 42:14The Yogi is swinging a high fly ball into center field,
- 42:18should be easy for Phillips going to his right,
- 42:21he's got it.
- 42:27That'll bring up Curry.
- 42:29Andy Curry.
- 42:36Andy Curry,
- 42:41who's in a third base in place of Billy Martin.
- 42:48The Yogi's have no runs,
- 42:50three hits, the White Sox no runs,
- 43:00the first missed the carries,
- 43:02Mike McCut's called,
- 43:04Ryder-Coston,
- 43:10left-hander Billy Pierce,
- 43:12out after his 11th win,
- 43:14he's won and won with the Yankees this year,
- 43:16and a thought of the,
- 43:18he's right at the mound,
- 43:20the third base from the fine play on that ball,
- 43:22out at first, the great pickup by Billy,
- 43:24that field,
- 43:26made an impossible play on that ball,
- 43:28but he did it,
- 43:30and then threw the ball into the net,
- 43:32and Bayes-Billy made a great pickup of it,
- 43:34for the, ah, that was a wonderful play.
- 43:37That's going to bring up Elston hard.
- 43:40Now let's get in a station break,
- 43:42this is the WCFO,
- 43:44Chicago White Sox,
- 43:46Baseball McQueen,
- 43:48this is WCFO,
- 43:50the point of labor,
- 43:52in Chicago,
- 43:54Howard swings,
- 43:56and there's a base at the right field,
- 43:58Howard, with an outside pitch on the line
- 44:00in the right field,
- 44:02for the Yankees with number four,
- 44:04that's going to bring up the pitcher,
- 44:06Mark Zittmar.
- 44:18There's Zittmar coming up.
- 44:32Zittmar,
- 44:34number 48 is walking up to the plate,
- 44:38the base-filly pitch,
- 44:42with Howard over on first base,
- 44:44and two outs.
- 44:46Here comes the first pitch to him,
- 44:48in close,
- 44:50with a fouled-off strike-off.
- 44:56Really gets a new baseball
- 44:58from the State Uphire Larry Nets.
- 45:04He's set again, here's the pitch,
- 45:06and a curve, a high curve,
- 45:08and a ball,
- 45:10and a ball.
- 45:12No score in the second inning at Chicago,
- 45:14third game, a rubber game,
- 45:16and a big game.
- 45:18Billy Thurston, Zittmar, the pitcher,
- 45:20and here's the next one,
- 45:22Zittmar, he's swinging a foul,
- 45:24it's out of play, to the right,
- 45:26he's dropped into the box seat,
- 45:28past first base,
- 45:30and a ball run, and a spike-two cut.
- 45:40Again, Thurston picks up the
- 45:42Roger bag, and drives his hands a bit.
- 45:46He's set.
- 45:50Here's the pitch to Zittmar,
- 45:52he's swinging a high short fly ball
- 45:54to the right field,
- 45:56easy for the ball,
- 45:58he's under the ball, he's got it.
- 46:00In that inning,
- 46:02no run, one hit,
- 46:04and one man, left on the baseball.
- 46:06And the score fans,
- 46:08at the end of the first half of the second,
- 46:10the Yankees no run,
- 46:12and four hits,
- 46:14the White Sox no run,
- 46:16and one hit.
- 46:18Well, fans, we're going into the last half of the second inning
- 46:20at Chicago, we sure hope you enjoy
- 46:22the game,
- 46:24Florida, Tennessee,
- 46:26down there in Georgia,
- 46:28in a good old state of Kentucky,
- 46:30you're up here in the middle west.
- 46:32With the White Sox story,
- 46:34those in the wall,
- 46:36those different spots in our country.
- 46:38Again, Thurston picks up the
- 46:40Roger bag,
- 46:42and drives his hands a bit.
- 46:44He's set.
- 46:46He's got the ball,
- 46:48he's got the ball,
- 46:50he's in the room.
- 46:52But if we keep going,
- 46:54the White Sox rebuilds that point at you.
- 46:56We're driving a hundred-foot chase
- 46:58to lead that.
- 47:00We've come ten extra steps
- 47:02ahead of time.
- 47:04A nation of
- 47:05French people.
- 47:09And they close out on a
- 47:12bit of precedent,
- 47:14into Prince Domino.
- 47:16They loose the baseball.
- 47:18Well friends, we're going into the last half of the second living in Chicago.
- 47:22We sure hope you enjoy all the excitement wherever you are.
- 47:26Florida, Tennessee, down there in Georgia,
- 47:30in a good old state of Kentucky, you're up here in the middle west.
- 47:34But the White Sox story goes into all those
- 47:38different spots in our country every time that the White Sox
- 47:42play ball. There's Hotfield.
- 47:46He'll be followed by Rivera, and then by the shortstop,
- 47:50Lewis, and Papalicio. The first pitch to end our front,
- 47:54the second baseman, Crass, for the ball, fires the first, he is safe.
- 47:58See you in a minute.
- 48:02There was a surprise front on which Richardson
- 48:06made a tremendous play. Boy, I can see
- 48:10why they all about this guy as they infield it.
- 48:14The ball was funnied fairly hard on the first base side
- 48:18of the mound. It got by the pitcher. Richardson
- 48:22raised them, made a two-click up at 12, but Matfield
- 48:26bid it out. There's Jungeluz starting to get out of the place.
- 48:30Now somebody else has been thrown out, Whitey Ford.
- 48:34There's Whitey Ford
- 48:40arguing with umpire John Stevens,
- 48:44and it looks like he yelled something about that decision at first base,
- 48:48and he's been put out of the game, and he and the umpire are going
- 48:52through it over to the first base. Everything is happening here today.
- 48:56Well, we won't start to worry
- 49:00until there's only nine left.
- 49:04We'll see what happens.
- 49:08Until there's only nine left.
- 49:12But there goes Whitey Ford,
- 49:16one of the American League's great young pitchers, who's been
- 49:20bothered with a sore shoulder. He's walking towards the
- 49:24stock stug up, and he has been chased out of the game.
- 49:28Pitch to Rivera is a ball.
- 49:34It's low on the outside, and it's all one.
- 49:38Matfield at first base,
- 49:42and a nice curve strikes around the knee.
- 49:46Rivera's running 252.
- 49:50He's had five runs run it in, and he's had two home runs.
- 49:54And last night he really hit one man that he kissed on.
- 49:58Here's the next pitch, and a swing and a long drive.
- 50:04It is here the line.
- 50:08It's a ball, a home run.
- 50:12They've got a line to home run off the wire on the pole in right field.
- 50:16It's really hot, and the thoughts lead to the dump.
- 50:20A White Owl won it, and a box of White Owl cigars.
- 50:24Let's move it on.
- 50:28Rivera's homers
- 50:32with a line drive that hits the wire on the
- 50:36bounce pole. The wire is on the
- 50:40first side of the pole. It hit on the wire
- 50:44and fell back down.
- 50:48It's a ball.
- 50:52And fell back down, and that is a home run, and two runs are in.
- 50:56Here's a strike on Louis, like what?
- 51:00The White Sox, that is
- 51:04a third hit in the game, and
- 51:08Louis takes the curve, strikes two.
- 51:12That's Rivera's third homer, and here's
- 51:16seventh run, that's it.
- 51:20The homers are again leaning way forward.
- 51:24Here comes the pitch to Louis, and a swing at a fall
- 51:28that's out of play back in first place.
- 51:32You should have seen that homer.
- 51:36Right up on that screen on the foul pole, and a home run.
- 51:40It's second homer in the series.
- 51:44Again the wind up from the pitch to Louis, a ball. A little bit low.
- 51:48So Billy Pierce has been given a two run
- 51:52lead here, and Rivera's homer, following
- 51:56a single by Freddie Hephey.
- 52:00Again the pitch to Louis, strike three, with a bottom
- 52:04hit.
- 52:08Here's Billy Pierce coming out.
- 52:12Andy second around, Andy Kelly a third.
- 52:16McDougall at short, Richardson at second.
- 52:20Starr in at first, Starr in right, Madeline Sutter, Yogi Vera
- 52:24in left.
- 52:28Here's Kelly Pierce walking up to the play.
- 52:32One out and two runs are in.
- 52:36And a fast ball that drops a little bit too low.
- 52:40And in close, ball one.
- 52:44What a day, what excitement
- 52:48you call it today. The next pitch to Billy is swing and a miss.
- 52:52One and one.
- 52:56Mark Gittmar.
- 53:00Big right handers in the 16th, and a swing and a miss.
- 53:04Well let's see how many home run balls he has served up.
- 53:08That is number five
- 53:12off the delivery of Gittmar.
- 53:16Here comes the pitch to Billy, it's low for the ball
- 53:20two and two.
- 53:24The umpires are Larry Matz, John Stevens,
- 53:28Rice and Rubble.
- 53:32They really had a time there today.
- 53:36Billy number 19 in the batter's box.
- 53:40Here comes the pitch and a high short fly ball
- 53:44in the left field. Finally Yogi's going to get a put out. He's got it.
- 53:48Yogi Vera crossed that ball in left field.
- 53:52Now the plate umpires cleaning the plate.
- 53:56And here is the lead off Sutter from the throw.
- 54:00The Dodgers just
- 54:07tied Milwaukee.
- 54:11Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are tied two and two.
- 54:15The Boston Cleveland game is still delayed
- 54:19by Reign. Boston leading four to one.
- 54:23Here's the pitch to Phillips, right at the middle.
- 54:27Nobody on two off, but there are two run
- 54:31then.
- 54:35And the pitch to Phillips, they swing and a high fly ball
- 54:39in the left field. Another chance for the Yogi man. He's got it.
- 54:43And it requires
- 54:47a put out. In that inning, number two runs and two hits
- 54:51and no one must down the base.
- 54:55The total
- 54:59the White Sox, two runs,
- 55:03three hits, no errors.
- 55:07The Yankees, no runs, four hits and no errors.
- 55:11Here is Gilmick Thibble leading off
- 55:15in the third inning of this ballgame.
- 55:19Lichardson leading off. I was looking at Gillies in the on-back circle.
- 55:23And the first pitch to Richardson
- 55:27is a little bit too low for a ball.
- 55:31But he's only the third inning. We had a Reign
- 55:34the Bay and a fight the Bay.
- 55:38Roller is arguing with the play-dump player about that call.
- 55:42And here is Lopez coming up to the play.
- 55:46Here's a telegram I'd like to answer.
- 55:50You said, Mink, do go ahead into a double play in the first inning.
- 55:54Whereas he struck out. That's not a double play.
- 55:58A double play, please explain. I said that there was a double play
- 56:02on that strikeout.
- 56:06And anytime on one play, there are two men retired.
- 56:10That is a double play. You could even get a triple play
- 56:14on a strikeout. The batter scored is a double play.
- 56:18With the batter strikes out, the runner going down is double. It all happens on the same play.
- 56:22That's scored as a double play. Lopez is talking with the play-dump player.
- 56:26Lopez is going back to the
- 56:32White Sox strikeout now. And we still have the lead off
- 56:36batter up in there. Richardson, who
- 56:41signaled the first time up.
- 56:46Line up down the pitch to him. Strike call.
- 56:50On a day.
- 56:56That field at third. Lillian Short, box at second.
- 57:00Philly at first remembers.
- 57:05And the pitch to him. They swing and smash a third ball down the left field line.
- 57:09But also, as chasing it into the corner, it's going to be a double for Bobby
- 57:13in his second hit in a row.
- 57:18That's a two base hit. And that is
- 57:22the number five for the
- 57:26Yankees.
- 57:30That's going to bring up Bill McDougal.
- 57:34Man on second.
- 57:38And the ball goes down.
- 57:42And the ball goes down.
- 57:46And the ball goes down.
- 57:50Nobody off.
- 57:54And Bill McDougal, who hit into a
- 57:58D-strikeout, and it was a double play. And here's the ground ball that's fouled
- 58:02on the third base line. One strike.
- 58:06Richardson
- 58:10out on second.
- 58:14And his first four here on the majors is hitting Wally.
- 58:18He has a 318 batting average going in to the game.
- 58:22Somebody has the trouble.
- 58:26He's getting a sign again.
- 58:30The next pitch for McDougal, they swing and a heart smash
- 58:34the third ball past third. And also, it's going down
- 58:38in the corner. And that's another double. And Richardson scores
- 58:42to make the score two to one.
- 58:46And the number six.
- 58:50That is the first
- 58:54run scored off Billy Pierce after
- 58:58five consecutive scoreless hits.
- 59:02Scored on a pair of
- 59:06doubles.
- 59:10Well McDougal, that is his 25th run
- 59:14about a day. Here's Mickey Mannell, who's single the first time
- 59:18up. And he's swinging and a foul
- 59:22off to the right.
- 59:26Now the White Sox have two runs,
- 59:30three hits, and no errors. The Yankees have one run,
- 59:34six hits, and no errors.
- 59:38Here's a rule on the double play.
- 59:42Clenched participation in the double play or triple play,
- 59:46the reach fielder who earns a put off
- 59:50or an assist, when two or three players are put out
- 59:54between the time the pitcher is delivered and the time the ball next becomes
- 59:58dead or is next in possession of the pitcher in a pitching position.
- 1:00:02Unless an error intervenes between
- 1:00:06put off. And explains
- 1:00:10why on a strikeout and a man going down, that is scored as a double
- 1:00:14play. Ball two and strike one for Mannell.
- 1:00:18And it's ball three in very close
- 1:00:22underneath.
- 1:00:26Ball three and strike one count on Mickey
- 1:00:30Mannell. Bill Scowen
- 1:00:34the on deck getter is talking with the Yankee manager Casey Stengel
- 1:00:38and now he's coming out of the dugout.
- 1:00:42Here's a curve and a swing in the there.
- 1:00:46Boy, it feels beauty that time.
- 1:00:50Tony Hepfield, who is playing third for
- 1:00:54the White Sox, never had a chance on those two doubles.
- 1:00:58Richardson's doubled, McDougal's doubled. They were hit like shots
- 1:01:02between he and the bag.
- 1:01:06Now we've got a ball three and a strike two count on Mickey Mannell and a swing
- 1:01:10and a ground goal to third. Hepfield up with that ball, fires the
- 1:01:14first and it's out. Got away. Nice play by
- 1:01:18Hepfield and a hell McDougal at second.
- 1:01:22Here's Scowen's stuff again.
- 1:01:26Here's Scowen's stuff again.
- 1:01:30Well, a lot of excitement.
- 1:01:34Scowen's stuffing into the batter's box.
- 1:01:38At Detroit it's all or nothing and Detroit's nothing at the end of three.
- 1:01:42Right at the middle.
- 1:01:46Really working carefully out there.
- 1:01:50In the box.
- 1:01:54Really working carefully out there.
- 1:02:00In the Baltimore Tiger game it's more and more time.
- 1:02:04Here's a swing and a strike on the ground that the shortstop grabs.
- 1:02:08Made a fine pick up with that ball, fires it the first
- 1:02:12face and mooses out and on the play McDougal goes to third.
- 1:02:16He tried to get that ball before it hit the ground
- 1:02:20and the funny cook that he had of grabbed it before it hit the ground
- 1:02:24he would have had a cinch double player.
- 1:02:28Here's Hank Bauer.
- 1:02:36In the Boston Cleveland game it's Miller and Winn.
- 1:02:40Two right handers.
- 1:02:44Hank Bauer.
- 1:02:50The team made over on third and a
- 1:02:56fastball dropped a little bit low above. The Washington
- 1:03:00Kansas City game will be played tonight.
- 1:03:04Socks are leading two to one.
- 1:03:12In the third inning of this ball game and a swing and a
- 1:03:16ground ball, shortstop picked the big stop that Miller
- 1:03:19Liner for.
- 1:03:22Big stop by Apple issue.
- 1:03:26The tying run was left on the base.
- 1:03:29Ball was not a stop.
- 1:03:32Way to as well in that inning one run, two hits
- 1:03:36and one man is left on the base.
- 1:03:40So fans, they score the end of the first half of the third inning.
- 1:03:44White Sox two runs, three hits, no errors.
- 1:03:47Yankees one run, six hits and no error.
- 1:03:53And we're going into the last half of the third inning of this
- 1:03:56ball game and Chicago is now a fast stuffing in.
- 1:04:00He won the first time up.
- 1:04:03Close game, two to one. Socks lead and a ball a little bit too low.
- 1:04:08Remember a night game with Washington, New Marneite.
- 1:04:11A single game on Saturday and a big Sunday double headed.
- 1:04:15He can't beat baseball.
- 1:04:17The biggest dollar is worth in the country.
- 1:04:21X picks the little box and a strike right at the knee.
- 1:04:27Nobody on and nobody out.
- 1:04:33Now they won the first time up.
- 1:04:38Going into the game with a 3-52 spotting average
- 1:04:43and a swing and a ground ball.
- 1:04:46Nice stop by the second base from the pitcher covering first
- 1:04:49and is out.
- 1:04:50Well, good. Real good lead start.
- 1:04:55Zipbar can really move.
- 1:05:03He was alert on that try and got over there.
- 1:05:05Harris Minoso will beat out an infield hit the first time up.
- 1:05:15First base to end swing and a miss like one.
- 1:05:22One strike. Going into today's activity.
- 1:05:26The socks lead the Yankees by five.
- 1:05:29Cleveland by six and a half.
- 1:05:31Ball it's low. The Tigers by seven.
- 1:05:35Boston by nine.
- 1:05:37Baltimore by eleven.
- 1:05:39Kansas City by twelve and a half.
- 1:05:42And Washington by seventeen.
- 1:05:45That's the complete rundown on the American League team.
- 1:05:49Here's the home foul.
- 1:05:53Again the plate on fire.
- 1:05:55Close the new baseball off.
- 1:05:57The pitcher and we're getting a light drizzle again.
- 1:06:02Dark storm clouds, rain clouds overhead.
- 1:06:07Ball on in a strike two counter swing and a ground ball.
- 1:06:11Good one up with it.
- 1:06:15It's an error for McDougal.
- 1:06:26McDougal went to his left for Minoso's ground ball and couldn't come up with it.
- 1:06:31And it scored as an error.
- 1:06:33Now here's the catcher, Sherman Rollins.
- 1:06:37The Boston-Cleveland game has been resumed.
- 1:06:40Boston four, Cleveland one at the end of three.
- 1:06:46Baller takes a strike.
- 1:06:48It's right across the knee.
- 1:06:50Here's the one-song. Two runs, three hits, no errors.
- 1:06:54The Yankees one run, six hits and one error.
- 1:06:59This has really been a while.
- 1:07:02Biffmarsh shakes off a couple of signs.
- 1:07:06Now he's set again and a high-fly ball into White's center field.
- 1:07:11Mandel getting over, you'll get it.
- 1:07:13He's got that ball, all the way up.
- 1:07:22That's going to bring up the first baseman, Dave Filly.
- 1:07:29The White's box went out ahead in the second inning.
- 1:07:32When half field single, and Reville lined a home run, a shot.
- 1:07:38Off the foul pole in White's field.
- 1:07:45Here's Filly, switch hitter batting left-handed.
- 1:07:52Also on first, he's running.
- 1:07:54Here's a swing and a tap to Bobby Richardson,
- 1:07:56up with it to break the first out,
- 1:07:58and it requires Lusson.
- 1:08:02In that inning, no run, no hits, an error,
- 1:08:07and one man left on the base.
- 1:08:11So fans, they score at the end of three, four innings.
- 1:08:15The White's box, two runs, three hits, no errors.
- 1:08:18The Yankees one run, six hits, and one error.
- 1:08:22God knows who's saying goodbye for a while, and here's the down line.
- 1:08:26Thank you, Bob. Here's Filly leading off of the Yankees.
- 1:08:28They're still having trouble down in the right field corner
- 1:08:31with the water that stands down there between innings,
- 1:08:33between half innings.
- 1:08:35The ground crew is going to sweep off some more of that water.
- 1:08:37Here's the delivery to Bob.
- 1:08:39Beauty by Thursday called strike.
- 1:08:41Had nothing in line.
- 1:08:43Now applied to center field with Robert Phillips.
- 1:08:45As the Yankee leadoff man in the second.
- 1:08:48Filly says, at the five, six hits,
- 1:08:52the Yankees put one run, and the box leading to the line.
- 1:08:55Beauty by Billy, pass ball low on our side for ball, one ball, and one strike.
- 1:08:59So the White's box half Filly at first, where the couple was
- 1:09:02after the beginning of today's game,
- 1:09:04Fox's second half, Ricci O'Chard.
- 1:09:06That field at third, it's placed to Phillips
- 1:09:08because Phillips moved in to center field to replace Larry Dillby.
- 1:09:11Next post, Dillby is swing,
- 1:09:13by there, and a line drive, a base ball,
- 1:09:15out of the right field,
- 1:09:16drops in front of the ball, in the water out there,
- 1:09:19comes up with a ball and fires it into Fox.
- 1:09:22So that is hit number seven.
- 1:09:25As now, line one in the right field,
- 1:09:27rock toward right center, and it drops right in the water,
- 1:09:30that has really soaked up that outfield.
- 1:09:34So that is the base hit.
- 1:09:36Leadoff man on for the New York Yankees,
- 1:09:39and coming up with third base, then Andy Curry.
- 1:09:43The White's box, separated in that downy point
- 1:09:46because they lost two front line players,
- 1:09:48and Dillby and Dillmo,
- 1:09:50on the other hand, that was the case for the New York Yankees,
- 1:09:53they lost one starter in today's game, Dillby Martin,
- 1:09:56and the others, 24 to a sideline, of course,
- 1:09:59and Enos Country's water, who is a member of the Yankee branch,
- 1:10:02usually missed.
- 1:10:04They're going in a high fly ball,
- 1:10:06that's headed to the top of Phillips is there,
- 1:10:08jockeing over to his right, makes out of it, makes the catch.
- 1:10:10He has to throw in the right,
- 1:10:11which the other hand plays,
- 1:10:12base ball, that moves on back to first.
- 1:10:15So the Yankees have one out,
- 1:10:20and coming up,
- 1:10:24is a catcher, Alston Hart,
- 1:10:27another right-handed starter.
- 1:10:32Well that's a big wide span for the employees.
- 1:10:35They're standing on the back,
- 1:10:37and rocking very slowly, man at least, away.
- 1:10:40That's taken by their families,
- 1:10:42and they are to strike calls,
- 1:10:45and put their hands up for the strike line.
- 1:10:47Enos is right away on left field,
- 1:10:50and the other side plays right away,
- 1:10:52and the same for Jim Ivar and right,
- 1:10:55and all three of them step deep.
- 1:10:57This guy has got great power,
- 1:10:59he's playing in a ball that he pops up,
- 1:11:01out of the short land,
- 1:11:02going up for an aphorysia,
- 1:11:03drops for a base hit,
- 1:11:05and there on his way to third now,
- 1:11:07here's the throw to second base,
- 1:11:09and there goes,
- 1:11:10and there's a couple of flips and fell out,
- 1:11:12and left side of field,
- 1:11:13a ball that was put off the handle by Hart,
- 1:11:15he loops it out of a aphorysia pad,
- 1:11:17and strikes left side of field,
- 1:11:19sending Farah around to third,
- 1:11:21and the Yankees with a prep here,
- 1:11:22with one as a person's third,
- 1:11:23and only one off,
- 1:11:25and coming out as a pitcher,
- 1:11:26are Zipmar.
- 1:11:29The ejection ends the base game,
- 1:11:31McCoy Martin, Innes Water,
- 1:11:32and Whitey Ford,
- 1:11:34and for the white spot,
- 1:11:35Gilly and Gifford.
- 1:11:39That's going to the base and break right here.
- 1:11:41This is the WCFL,
- 1:11:43Chicago White Rock Baseball Network.
- 1:11:47This is WCFL,
- 1:11:49the place of labor in Chicago.
- 1:11:53All very fast and feeling out here,
- 1:11:55and the Fusen started in the first inning,
- 1:11:57where the White Rock is back.
- 1:12:00Larry Delby works the batter,
- 1:12:02and on a wild pitch to Delby,
- 1:12:05with two men on.
- 1:12:07The pitcher came to the plate to cover,
- 1:12:09and the wild pitch actually was one that
- 1:12:11checked Delby, he went down in the first to escape it,
- 1:12:14and the pitcher, who was up there as a play-by-by
- 1:12:16about Zipmar, came down to cover as a plate,
- 1:12:19and Delby and Zipmar exchanged some worries,
- 1:12:21and Delby then flattened him with a punch,
- 1:12:24and immediately that brought out both of them,
- 1:12:26to that fighter flight developed from that point on.
- 1:12:29Here's the swing and a ground ball,
- 1:12:30and that WCFL picks up,
- 1:12:31steps out the back and second,
- 1:12:32fires the first double ball,
- 1:12:34and fires the second.
- 1:12:36Hart Zipmar left one to Apparicio,
- 1:12:38running towards the back and second base,
- 1:12:40slowly steps on the back,
- 1:12:42to get the post on on hard,
- 1:12:44relays to Billy at first,
- 1:12:45to double up Zipmar and Max Roe,
- 1:12:47for the New York Yankees in the fourth.
- 1:12:50And in addition to the exchange of words
- 1:12:52between Delby and Zipmar,
- 1:12:53then Grotow and Ines Slaughter got into a separate fight,
- 1:12:56where there was a real fight going on,
- 1:12:59with both ventures out,
- 1:13:00even some of the White Rocks and Yankee players
- 1:13:02came out of the postman,
- 1:13:04and Grotow and Slaughter were thrown out
- 1:13:06as a result of that little extra bit.
- 1:13:08And then Whitey Ford was knocked out of the game later,
- 1:13:12for buying something from the back to one of the other.
- 1:13:16So the net result here,
- 1:13:19normally New York Yankees, no runs,
- 1:13:23that was two base hits,
- 1:13:27no air, and one man left.
- 1:13:30That described the end of the first half of the fourth.
- 1:13:32The White Rocks two, and the New York Yankees one.
- 1:13:36Well, thanks to the double players
- 1:13:38that Zipmar wrapped into,
- 1:13:39they're trying run for the Yankees,
- 1:13:41with less credit.
- 1:13:43Here's Matthew Leading off,
- 1:13:44he fouled off the first place,
- 1:13:45and we have extra money for him,
- 1:13:46and said he takes outside the ball one,
- 1:13:48one ball and one strike.
- 1:13:50Hatfield, in the second inning,
- 1:13:52was the lead off man,
- 1:13:53he got a single,
- 1:13:55and then Revere lined his homer down the Westfield line
- 1:13:58at the 352 foot mark,
- 1:14:00and Zipmar took the lead on the power ball.
- 1:14:02There's a left-foot,
- 1:14:03and a long drive,
- 1:14:04and a very quick,
- 1:14:05and a good hit.
- 1:14:06Coming up to the ball,
- 1:14:07there's Mickey Maddler out there,
- 1:14:08and Hatfield with his second hit.
- 1:14:11Well, we're hot and out with a jungle general bow.
- 1:14:16And Jim, he really came to play against the Yankees.
- 1:14:24He may have had his troubles
- 1:14:25in my first game of the series,
- 1:14:29but barred Jim Dandy rebounded last night,
- 1:14:32fell to the ball all over the last man,
- 1:14:34the very with a homer on,
- 1:14:36which is given the white track to a 2-1 margin.
- 1:14:38Here's the first to jam a 5-foot strike off.
- 1:14:41The Bessberg power,
- 1:14:43he's got some out of red legs,
- 1:14:45and again this afternoon,
- 1:14:46for the fourth straight tie.
- 1:14:48The power's free,
- 1:14:49and Cincinnati's free.
- 1:14:53Bobby Berger must have one,
- 1:14:55and the Yankee right-hander,
- 1:14:57end of the stretch,
- 1:14:58and he's the first to pass.
- 1:14:59Revere's playing to the spans,
- 1:15:00and the pick-up by Scallon goes,
- 1:15:02second base, double play.
- 1:15:04Scallon steps on the back to get Revere.
- 1:15:06As he reached back with his left hand,
- 1:15:08grabs that ball,
- 1:15:09steps on the back,
- 1:15:10fires through the base,
- 1:15:11judge that Bill McGizgill,
- 1:15:13and McGizgill was trading with the ball,
- 1:15:15and Hatfield went sliding into second base,
- 1:15:17and goes into double play.
- 1:15:19Revere hits one well,
- 1:15:21down the first base side,
- 1:15:22but if Scallon's trying to make his move to the right,
- 1:15:24he reached back, grabs the ball,
- 1:15:26went to the back,
- 1:15:28made the put out there on the batter,
- 1:15:29fires the second to retire the runner.
- 1:15:30Here's Appalachia on the pitch,
- 1:15:31and low, and I try for ball one.
- 1:15:34So that is the first Yankee double play
- 1:15:36of the afternoon.
- 1:15:38And the Yankees now with 60
- 1:15:40twin fillings to their credit.
- 1:15:42Appalachia stuck out in the second,
- 1:15:44knocks that two out, nobody off.
- 1:15:46Winded by that foul on the pitch,
- 1:15:48Lurie makes low for ball two,
- 1:15:50and it's two balls in a straight.
- 1:15:52Still nothing on Appalachia.
- 1:15:54Hittmar saves the time,
- 1:15:56gets the time from Hard,
- 1:15:58line up again on the pitch,
- 1:16:00and it's low on our side in the mid.
- 1:16:02Off-way, clear.
- 1:16:04Clear I think, but now on Little Lurie.
- 1:16:10He's already turned in,
- 1:16:12a couple of terrific plays, big plays,
- 1:16:14two plays, there's foul four,
- 1:16:16foul five-fifth.
- 1:16:18Hittmar with low where near the strike zone
- 1:16:20on four deliveries to Appalachia.
- 1:16:22Lurie gets on, and coming up
- 1:16:24is Kendrick Billy first.
- 1:16:36Billy with a lifetime record
- 1:16:38against the Yankees of 14 victories
- 1:16:40and 24 defeats.
- 1:16:42Last season he won two
- 1:16:44and lost two against New York,
- 1:16:46and this season he has fallen even
- 1:16:48at one win and one loss.
- 1:16:50And Billy now seven hits.
- 1:16:52He's played out of the White Sox,
- 1:16:54but through seven hits and 37 times
- 1:16:56the back is the best back call
- 1:16:58playside inside into the plate.
- 1:17:00On a foul four by Hittmar,
- 1:17:02and a strike one.
- 1:17:06Play third.
- 1:17:08Has already worked in 100 innings
- 1:17:10before this game this afternoon.
- 1:17:14Getting on to my good first,
- 1:17:16is Appalachia, steps away now,
- 1:17:18and he's offside mid-strike
- 1:17:20for ball one.
- 1:17:22Offside and low, and it's one ball and one strike.
- 1:17:28One and one.
- 1:17:34This is that honor for a necessary
- 1:17:36ingredients to make it one of the most
- 1:17:38exciting of the year.
- 1:17:40Appalachia, a five, is back to the market first,
- 1:17:42says Hittmar turns and throws the scallop.
- 1:17:44Billy gets up on his feet again,
- 1:17:46and the drive he may go is the first to swing,
- 1:17:48and a foul first like this.
- 1:17:50And a one ball and two strikes.
- 1:17:52And that's how Austin Howard really got one.
- 1:17:54A foul fifth by Provado Pierce,
- 1:17:56that really strung hard.
- 1:17:58The Yankee trainer comes out to take a look at it.
- 1:18:02The pitcher, Hittmar,
- 1:18:04starts off the ball, and it may be
- 1:18:06that Howard will be
- 1:18:08taken out of the game.
- 1:18:10And it appears to be a little impatient,
- 1:18:12because he has been quite a bit of pain
- 1:18:14of the Yankee trainer as he finds his
- 1:18:16straight from that finger.
- 1:18:20And we will have
- 1:18:22a new catcher come again.
- 1:18:24He is following the game.
- 1:18:26President William Henry
- 1:18:28will meet with the manager of the
- 1:18:30state on the field.
- 1:18:32And the way starts following.
- 1:18:34There will be no seats
- 1:18:36for Mr. Harris following this game.
- 1:18:38He also has
- 1:18:40his three-year-old son,
- 1:18:42and he will be
- 1:18:44promoted to Mar-a-Land
- 1:18:46from the league.
- 1:18:48The announcement has just been made
- 1:18:50by the shorts of President Wilhous
- 1:18:52of the American League.
- 1:18:54We'll meet with both managers right after this game
- 1:18:56in the White Sox office of
- 1:18:58Mirakomisky Park.
- 1:19:00There will be no seats made until
- 1:19:02for Miles concerning the
- 1:19:04incidents we had out here today.
- 1:19:06Austin Howard has gone over
- 1:19:08to the Yankee drug out.
- 1:19:10And we will have
- 1:19:12a new catcher coming in now
- 1:19:14for the New York Yankees
- 1:19:16at least he was called in from the both men.
- 1:19:28A new catcher will be coming in
- 1:19:32unless the Yankee trainer
- 1:19:34is able to do some
- 1:19:36very apt work on Howard's fingers.
- 1:19:40And this will be Johnson.
- 1:19:42Darrell Johnson
- 1:19:44who was called in from the Yankee both men.
- 1:19:50He is down and they back out right now
- 1:19:52and he is getting on, they catching power
- 1:19:54from there, there goes the test protector.
- 1:19:56And in a moment he will get the shin guards
- 1:19:58out and he will be coming out
- 1:20:00behind the face there and that means that
- 1:20:02the Yankee's have lost
- 1:20:04their fourth tenure of the afternoon.
- 1:20:06Three of them have been crossed out.
- 1:20:08Smarter, Martin and Wadi Ford.
- 1:20:12And Austin Howard goes out of the game now
- 1:20:14because of the foul fit by Billy Pierce.
- 1:20:16The way the test looked back
- 1:20:18to the catcher immediately he realized
- 1:20:20what had happened.
- 1:20:22And it was apparently a finger this location.
- 1:20:24Here comes Darrell Johnson
- 1:20:26out of the Yankee drug out now with a mask on
- 1:20:28he is coming out behind the face.
- 1:20:30As the Yankee trainer is released down
- 1:20:32into the New York drug out
- 1:20:34he is still working on the hand
- 1:20:36of Austin Howard.
- 1:20:38Well that's the test business behind the play.
- 1:20:40You have to admire
- 1:20:42every man who drives with a mask
- 1:20:44and chest protector and those shin guards
- 1:20:46and gets back there because
- 1:20:48it is no place for the weak hearted.
- 1:20:50That's for sure.
- 1:20:56It is a rough phase
- 1:20:58of this game of baseball
- 1:21:00but it can be a very
- 1:21:02rewarding part of it.
- 1:21:06And some of the
- 1:21:08top scottalation of the major league
- 1:21:10by Wadi Ford.
- 1:21:12So Billy Pierce is in down the
- 1:21:14minus box and Johnson is behind the play.
- 1:21:16Here is the action on it.
- 1:21:26And Pierce has a 1-2 count.
- 1:21:28Billy's wings tap went over the pitcher's head
- 1:21:30in front of McDoogle. The play will be the first
- 1:21:32Pierce goes out and badly tires the drive.
- 1:21:34Billy Pierce tapped one
- 1:21:36up over the pitcher's head.
- 1:21:38McDoogle came up on the infield grass
- 1:21:40picked off that ball through the scourge
- 1:21:42and got Pierce.
- 1:21:44So the white box in the last
- 1:21:46out of the fourth with no runs.
- 1:21:48One hit lead off single by Hatfield
- 1:21:50no errors and one mad luck.
- 1:21:52And the scourer at the end
- 1:21:54of four full innings of play.
- 1:21:58The left side two
- 1:22:00and the New York Yankees
- 1:22:02one.
- 1:22:04Going down again.
- 1:22:06Picking up a little bit more now
- 1:22:08and as it results it's
- 1:22:10a lot of flurry of excitement here among the
- 1:22:12spectators as the up-rumors suddenly pop
- 1:22:14off. Everybody gets rain go down again.
- 1:22:16Here's the lead off man for the Yankees.
- 1:22:18It's Bobby Richardson's second baseman
- 1:22:20first baseman to strike.
- 1:22:22Richardson is super
- 1:22:24two.
- 1:22:30Here's the next pitch
- 1:22:32a swing and a miss was like two out of
- 1:22:34nothing at this point.
- 1:22:36Richardson got a single on first
- 1:22:38and the first one.
- 1:22:40And he doubles down the third base
- 1:22:42side and the third got a just inside the line
- 1:22:44and shot it right past Hatfield.
- 1:22:46And McDoogle duplicated that
- 1:22:48just a few seconds later. Here's the next
- 1:22:50pitch.
- 1:23:20Well out the left handed
- 1:23:22hippopotamus.
- 1:23:24Four out of ten every second this year.
- 1:23:26There was the ball.
- 1:23:28Bind in the center field.
- 1:23:30Swim up.
- 1:23:32Racing for the ball.
- 1:23:34The ball flies through the water.
- 1:23:36Rolled out to the both hand barrier
- 1:23:38the 415 foot mark.
- 1:23:40Richardson was on his way to third.
- 1:23:42And Bracee went out to take the relay.
- 1:23:44Whipped the ball to Freddie Hatfield.
- 1:23:46Hatfield did not have him when he split in
- 1:23:48the first half.
- 1:23:50But he over split the bag by an out of
- 1:23:52foot and Hatfield immediately
- 1:23:54put the bag on him.
- 1:23:56He was called out of third and the
- 1:23:58Aggies have one out.
- 1:24:00He's got a hand with it.
- 1:24:02Three base in.
- 1:24:04Here's McDoogle.
- 1:24:06Mark still to the one in the White
- 1:24:08Cross.
- 1:24:10But that's that pile of McDoogle for
- 1:24:12ball one.
- 1:24:14And that is where the type of pressure
- 1:24:16is in there for strike.
- 1:24:18One ball and one strike.
- 1:24:20So Richardson with a three base in.
- 1:24:22But the put out from Cullum
- 1:24:24to Rappoy to Hatfield
- 1:24:26has the over split the bag.
- 1:24:28McDoogle has the devil in two fries.
- 1:24:32One one.
- 1:24:34The only now of my pair is Carey Ball
- 1:24:36who is playing about that.
- 1:24:38One ball and two strikes.
- 1:24:50It's hard to imagine that so much excitement
- 1:24:52could possibly be packed in a
- 1:24:54three baseball game.
- 1:25:00But that's the way it is then.
- 1:25:02From the start of this series on Tuesday
- 1:25:04I hear the line up about there
- 1:25:06now the one two fifths fastball
- 1:25:08playing a live drive out of the West
- 1:25:10County. That's going to be a
- 1:25:12quick turn over.
- 1:25:14The ball off the wall now.
- 1:25:16McDoogle goes in starting a second base.
- 1:25:18They both come second to Rappoy to
- 1:25:20and hurry out the relay man
- 1:25:22starts to walk back to the infield.
- 1:25:24McDoogle with the second
- 1:25:26straight two base in.
- 1:25:28The ball to the left.
- 1:25:40McDoogle
- 1:25:42gets on for a third of the
- 1:25:44second half.
- 1:25:46The ball is up.
- 1:25:48The ball is down.
- 1:25:50The ball is up.
- 1:25:52The ball is up.
- 1:25:54The ball is up.
- 1:25:56The Yankees with a tie
- 1:25:58run out there second base
- 1:26:00in the first half of the fifth. New York with one run
- 1:26:02and hits.
- 1:26:04The White Rocks two runs
- 1:26:06four hits and no errors off
- 1:26:08Hitmar.
- 1:26:10Here's the delivery to
- 1:26:12McDoogle.
- 1:26:14McDoogle
- 1:26:16has a single and two times
- 1:26:18the time.
- 1:26:20The first and ground to
- 1:26:22McDoogle on the third.
- 1:26:28Joey Staley works in the White Rocks full-time.
- 1:26:30Here's the next pitch by
- 1:26:32first. Madel takes the low end side
- 1:26:34gets the lead and on everybody keeps it out in front of him
- 1:26:36and as a result McDoogle is unable
- 1:26:38to advance.
- 1:26:40That ball went down in the third on the low
- 1:26:42end side that's the matter.
- 1:26:44He passed off Holler's shin guard
- 1:26:46and fortunately in
- 1:26:48blocking it just right he cuts it out
- 1:26:50and plays.
- 1:26:52The Yankees eye on the ball and the base runner
- 1:26:54after same time.
- 1:26:56McDoogle's base in second base.
- 1:26:58Richardson let off the
- 1:27:00little.
- 1:27:02Hover's for the bag in third.
- 1:27:04It was tagged out by Hatfield.
- 1:27:06Otherwise the Yankees would have had this game
- 1:27:08right up now with McDoogle's two base
- 1:27:10in the much better.
- 1:27:12Here's the
- 1:27:14long shot out of the left field.
- 1:27:16The ball is off the wall.
- 1:27:18Madel is in third
- 1:27:20in second base.
- 1:27:22The game is tied. The Yankees
- 1:27:24fill in the right box field as Madel hit a long
- 1:27:26shot off the wall
- 1:27:28out of left field.
- 1:27:30Over but also said
- 1:27:32that's many.
- 1:27:34Waited for that ball then to rebound from the
- 1:27:36ball as it travels so quickly out of the left field.
- 1:27:38Full line drive.
- 1:27:40Richardson made the pickup.
- 1:27:42Fired the ball in the box but Madel got in
- 1:27:44safely in second base and that is with
- 1:27:46the ball off first here in the fifth
- 1:27:48inning.
- 1:27:50Game is tied.
- 1:27:52The Yankees now with the 11
- 1:27:54hits off third.
- 1:27:56That brings up Bill Scowll.
- 1:27:58Highless call.
- 1:28:00Manager Alifair is coming out and it may be
- 1:28:02but right now Al has decided
- 1:28:04that there will be all for first.
- 1:28:06See if he makes
- 1:28:08any sign as he goes up
- 1:28:10to the body as it is yet.
- 1:28:12This is the cup
- 1:28:14especially when you have a ball like this.
- 1:28:18He takes the ball from Billy Pillsman.
- 1:28:20Billy is
- 1:28:22getting out of the game. Jerry Spilley
- 1:28:24has been working in the
- 1:28:26bullpen for the right box.
- 1:28:30Back to Billy
- 1:28:32was after his eighth straight win
- 1:28:34and his seventh consecutive
- 1:28:36complete game. That's what really makes it
- 1:28:38a tough thing for a manager that
- 1:28:40have to do.
- 1:28:42With the Yankees
- 1:28:44slaying from the heels here
- 1:28:46have a mass of 11 hits
- 1:28:48and out of the 11
- 1:28:50three have been solid drives
- 1:28:52off Harris here on the fifth inning.
- 1:28:54And save for the fact that Richardson
- 1:28:56was nailed over sliding the bag and
- 1:28:58third after his triple the Yankees
- 1:29:00would be leading here as way to two as this.
- 1:29:02The game is tied at two runs of
- 1:29:04pace. Here's Jerry Spilley
- 1:29:06starting the long walk from the bullpen
- 1:29:08out in Senate Hill.
- 1:29:10Here's Jerry Spilley's
- 1:29:12first run of the game.
- 1:29:14He's got a terrific hand
- 1:29:16for a terrific young guy
- 1:29:18Billy Pillsman.
- 1:29:20Jerry Spilley
- 1:29:22is the first
- 1:29:24one to play in the
- 1:29:26bullpen.
- 1:29:28He's got a terrific hand
- 1:29:30for a terrific young guy
- 1:29:32Billy Pillsman.
- 1:29:34Jerry Spilley
- 1:29:36is the first one to play in the bullpen.
- 1:29:38Let's look over to Billy's record.
- 1:29:40This will be Jerry's 13th game of
- 1:29:42pass. He's
- 1:29:44one to without defeat.
- 1:29:46As Richardson 29 and 2-0
- 1:29:48giving him a 28 hit
- 1:29:506 runs all 6 turns.
- 1:29:52He's got 16 and 1-5.
- 1:29:54And his earn run average
- 1:29:56is 1.80.
- 1:29:58He has the same earn run average as
- 1:30:00first. When this game got started
- 1:30:02to start there were 1.80.
- 1:30:04He's got a great run average for 9-10.
- 1:30:08What's
- 1:30:10going on here.
- 1:30:12That's
- 1:30:14for the Yankees.
- 1:30:16When Spilley is ready
- 1:30:18we'll be first place
- 1:30:20for Bill Scholar.
- 1:30:22And Scholar today is
- 1:30:241-2.
- 1:30:26See Bobby Richardson now
- 1:30:28is 3-3.
- 1:30:30Gil McDonough is 2-3.
- 1:30:32Scholar is 1-2.
- 1:30:34Fowler nothing for 2.
- 1:30:36Fowler is 1-2.
- 1:30:38Andy Carey is 0-2.
- 1:30:40Alston Hyde who is out of the game now.
- 1:30:42Hyde was 2-2.
- 1:30:44He's been replaced by Johnson.
- 1:30:46And then Hyde separate that finger
- 1:30:48into a very loud dip.
- 1:30:50Fowler only first.
- 1:30:54The Yankees have 2 runs.
- 1:30:56The Alumnus have committed 1
- 1:30:58error. So Mike got 2 runs.
- 1:31:004 hits and no errors.
- 1:31:09That is the
- 1:31:11last one across now by Jerry Stilling.
- 1:31:15Water is still talking to him.
- 1:31:17James stands out in front of the plate.
- 1:31:21Round of a second base.
- 1:31:23Here's Mickey Maddell.
- 1:31:25Watched an average he'll have
- 1:31:27a talking to him.
- 1:31:29He's going to be a great
- 1:31:31player during this to lay down.
- 1:31:33Bill Scholar.
- 1:31:35Right handed batter.
- 1:31:37Right handed Jerry Stilling.
- 1:31:39The outfield.
- 1:31:41Now Fowler fowlts.
- 1:31:43Ships over toward Lund Center field.
- 1:31:45But also is great away a left and deep.
- 1:31:47Here's the start of the motion by Stilling.
- 1:31:49Maddell leads the second half of the pitch.
- 1:31:51Fowler is swinging a smash in a base hit.
- 1:31:53Out of the backfield the Red Bull score.
- 1:31:55Here comes Maddell rounding it there.
- 1:31:57And then Stilling.
- 1:31:59The backfield is free to do.
- 1:32:01But also throws off the box.
- 1:32:03And Scholar the very back to the back at first.
- 1:32:05So Scholar on the first pinch by Jerry Stilling.
- 1:32:07It's flat on the hole because half field
- 1:32:09and half ratio.
- 1:32:11And the Yankees take the lead free to do.
- 1:32:13That is a fourth straight New York hit.
- 1:32:21Still only one out.
- 1:32:23The batter hanged flowers.
- 1:32:25The way that your ball came, the Yankees with a dozen hits.
- 1:32:32Now where's the old change of this position in the infield?
- 1:32:36Most closer, over to our third.
- 1:32:40Struck by Stanley, down by the Phillips.
- 1:32:43Chips over to our left side of the field, but also a straight away rush and deep.
- 1:32:47Here's the start of the motion by Stanley.
- 1:32:49Matt or Lee's the second half of this.
- 1:32:51The ball is swinging a smash to the base-head out of the left field, the number four.
- 1:32:55Here comes Matt or Rodney Gutierrez, down the right he comes, and the Yankees go out and starts playing a two.
- 1:33:00And also throws both the box and the star and hurries back to the back of the field.
- 1:33:04So, Stanley on the first pitch by Jerry Silly.
- 1:33:07Look out of the hole between Hasseel and Appleysio.
- 1:33:10And the Yankees make the lead, play a two.
- 1:33:12Matt or Lee, more straight New York hit.
- 1:33:22Still only one out.
- 1:33:25The batter, Hank Baller, waited for a ball game.
- 1:33:29The Yankees with a dozen hits.
- 1:33:33Appleysio changes this position in the infield.
- 1:33:36Moves closer over short third.
- 1:33:42Stretch by Stanley, but a short third down the pitch.
- 1:33:45The star takes the strike.
- 1:33:48So that run with Matt or Storing is charged to Paris.
- 1:33:53That means that Silly is charged with three runs and eleven of the 12 Yankees hits.
- 1:33:59Silly on the first one out, smaller batting.
- 1:34:06Here's Ray Nexler to be by Stanley.
- 1:34:09Telephone is playing on the inside pitch.
- 1:34:11Drops out of the middle of Lollard, but after the break, but Lollard receives it terribly.
- 1:34:15Got a one ball and one strike.
- 1:34:17One and one.
- 1:34:22White right for the big gap out there on the right side of the field.
- 1:34:24Permanent hole between the rebound, full of perfect flow on the outside.
- 1:34:29Get away from Lollard again, roll to the right side of the plate.
- 1:34:32Stair up out of the gap, out in front of him, so he picked it up easily.
- 1:34:35And it's now two balls and a strike.
- 1:34:37Two and one.
- 1:34:40The outback man is the left field of Yankee Barron.
- 1:34:45So this is the neat section of the batter guard right here.
- 1:34:50Here's Ray Chouan, delivery down by Jerry Sett, a pair of a swing and a ground foul off of the third base side.
- 1:34:57Two and two.
- 1:34:59Let's give him a station break right here.
- 1:35:01This is the WCFL, Conno-Lightstance Baseball Network.
- 1:35:05This is WCFL, the voice of labor in Chicago.
- 1:35:09Over the White Stance, Warp House, the state being at 640 miles.
- 1:35:14Two and two.
- 1:35:16The Conno-Lightstance Baseball.
- 1:35:17Here's one out, two rounds of end.
- 1:35:20And they're picked by Jerry Settly.
- 1:35:22We are tied for ball three and it's way into it.
- 1:35:35Well, the ace of the White Sox pitching staff, Billy Pierce,
- 1:35:39won four in a third inning today as a draw for the first base.
- 1:35:41And Skylin gets back in front of his time.
- 1:35:47Play on two to count.
- 1:35:49Here's the number five Settly, a swing and a stance to the shortstop after this.
- 1:35:53He always play well after the infirmed, the throw, and at some time,
- 1:35:56as power goes out, Skylin was doing on the three-two, the number five Jerry Settly.
- 1:36:00So, Billy, moving to his right hand going in the hole of the ground therefore,
- 1:36:04had no play of second base.
- 1:36:06The play was the first and he got his man.
- 1:36:07The Yankees were caught out right of his second.
- 1:36:11And again, his Yogi ball.
- 1:36:16Now there are two outs.
- 1:36:18Please take it by Scarlet and there will be intentionally one.
- 1:36:22First base is open.
- 1:36:24Two outs situation.
- 1:36:26First half of the fair.
- 1:36:28Here's one two out of there.
- 1:36:30An infection of one for Yogi to load up that gap at first.
- 1:36:33Again, they picked by Settly four three.
- 1:36:39Settly goes through all the margins in proper sequence.
- 1:36:42Now steps away from the rubber.
- 1:36:44Let's go to a second base where Skylin had taken rather a long lead.
- 1:36:47Here's four four and Yogi ball is purposely passed.
- 1:36:55Half Joe Megan of the back of the arched console left to pay us a call to the staff.
- 1:36:59And it reminds us too that with no activity out here in the field right now,
- 1:37:05standing here is Jack that will come out,
- 1:37:07but he will be lifted now in favor of a bench-bottom to your college.
- 1:37:10But before that, you will talk to our game between the Alderman and the Settly console.
- 1:37:14Our back of the arched console will be played out of the line at 8.30 next Thursday night,
- 1:37:19June 20th at the console's recreation field at 47th and South Amers.
- 1:37:24I've had a chance to play out there for the last two years and this is sort of upsetting
- 1:37:30because we're going to be on the road now.
- 1:37:32We won't be able to participate in this game, but I have always fairly enjoyed it.
- 1:37:37We won last year Mayor Daly, John Rignick, Jack Cimiti and Jack Maitley are expected to play out there.
- 1:37:42They always have a fine turnout for it.
- 1:37:44That will be Thursday, June 20th.
- 1:37:46Here's Collins, coming up to that for Terry.
- 1:37:48I'm the first to call it.
- 1:37:49This is the first call, most of by Stalevity, set in right at the letter and it's nothing to watch.
- 1:37:55The Yankees have runners at 1st and 2nd now with two outs, Stalin at 2nd and Yergy Barra on at 1st.
- 1:38:02More activity in the bullsman at this time of 60 hollowers warming up.
- 1:38:10Here's the next pass, just playing in a large drive out of the Santa Feolors of 8th Hits.
- 1:38:13Stalin comes around third and comes in to score and put a fire to all the second base.
- 1:38:20Now the Yankees increase their rebound of 42.
- 1:38:36Here's Collins, just last one, right out over second base.
- 1:38:41In the center field, with a sense of bring some scourge, Mera held up at 2nd base.
- 1:38:49Collins was out at first and the batter is Elston Howard.
- 1:38:53Not Elston Howard, but the catcher now.
- 1:38:55Dall Johnson is the swing and a ground ball that the third base from Hatfield goes for.
- 1:39:00First to Fox, forced out 2nd base just in time.
- 1:39:02On a very tight play to retire the side.
- 1:39:05The Yankees batted eight men in the fifth inning.
- 1:39:07And Hatfield came up with that low cap off the bat of the catcher, Dall Johnson,
- 1:39:15to get the fourth out of 2nd base on Jill Collins and retire the side.
- 1:39:21The Yankees had a total of three runs on five hits.
- 1:39:24Wayruns on five hits, no White Rock Barrel, and New York with a total of two mad left.
- 1:39:38Self-assure at the end of the first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:39:43The New York Yankees four and the Chicago White Rock two.
- 1:39:47Leading off for the White Rocks, first pitch is high and in fact the end for ball one.
- 1:39:55This is the last half of the fifth.
- 1:40:02Now the White Rocks need a fair run to pitch the fill-up, takes the strike, and it's one ball and one strike.
- 1:40:09Mother is nothing to do.
- 1:40:11He struck out of the first inning and applied to left to retire the drive in the second.
- 1:40:14On the mound at Zipmar and the pressure is a swing and a miss for strike two.
- 1:40:27Jerry Coleman is not playing the third to the Yankees.
- 1:40:31He is the third baseman to be used there.
- 1:40:34Martin was thrown out of the game and he carried with lifted fours and that's better.
- 1:40:39And Coleman is there now.
- 1:40:41Why not badly next to the Rean.
- 1:40:45So the swing, that's one of the steps out.
- 1:40:47The Gizzle has it up on my hot post.
- 1:40:49The first post goes out to the Reds.
- 1:40:51So the White Rocks and the First have one away.
- 1:40:53That will bring up Dracke and Baseman Nelson's loss.
- 1:41:11Now the A is nothing for one today.
- 1:41:13Walked in the first inning and Razzidac him the third.
- 1:41:18And Richardson made a great play on the ground ball.
- 1:41:20Here's a little bit of box strike call.
- 1:41:23Zipmar has allowed only four hits.
- 1:41:27Ringled by the Hoso on the first.
- 1:41:30Ringled by Hatfield and a home run by Ravela in the second inning.
- 1:41:34And a hit by Hatfield in the fourth.
- 1:41:36Here's a little bit of box,
- 1:41:39down to low.
- 1:41:41Now to Parkball and one strike.
- 1:41:42Zoli had quite a first inning flare up.
- 1:41:50He placed the first out between the Yankees and the White Rocks.
- 1:41:54And resulted in more players being crossed out right then and there.
- 1:41:59Here's the next bit.
- 1:42:01Park playing down to the second base.
- 1:42:03Richardson has it.
- 1:42:05So the first box goes out second to first.
- 1:42:07And the White Rocks very quickly in the fifth inning have two outs.
- 1:42:09Here's Manasso.
- 1:42:10That's John Ball hit by Fosch.
- 1:42:12And all the flick off on Heimab.
- 1:42:14Right after the second base from Bobby Richardson.
- 1:42:16So the play didn't settle in the fifth.
- 1:42:18And also, the Yankees are leading out of two in the on half of the fifth.
- 1:42:20The next to Manasso is Swing and M.S. for third one.
- 1:42:22Manasso has one hit and two times the first.
- 1:42:24Singles in the first.
- 1:42:26Got on on an error in the third.
- 1:42:28And the White Rocks have it.
- 1:42:30And the White Rocks have it.
- 1:42:32And the White Rocks have it.
- 1:42:34And the White Rocks have it.
- 1:42:36And the White Rocks have it.
- 1:42:37And the White Rocks have it.
- 1:42:40That's been a great idea.
- 1:42:42Yeah.
- 1:42:44The White Rocks have it on him.
- 1:42:46Him.
- 1:42:48Some of the most if I did my firstומ claims like my gamut слов,
- 1:42:51Richard Cedreg Dave Jong.
- 1:42:57Once the head of Hampton,
- 1:42:59backhand stars,
- 1:43:01backhand stars,
- 1:43:04in the air,
- 1:43:05One of the greatest fires we've seen in this area.
- 1:43:09And that retires the side.
- 1:43:13Three up and three down.
- 1:43:14Go to the white spot and the six innings.
- 1:43:16And with nothing across, the score at the end of five.
- 1:43:19Today, our Yankees four.
- 1:43:21Powering the white spot.
- 1:43:24Two.
- 1:43:26Going into the six innings.
- 1:43:28Yankees made it to the end.
- 1:43:29Once again, here's Bobo.
- 1:43:31Back to Don.
- 1:43:31He did not just tremendous swing and a slow curve ball at miss.
- 1:43:35Now he's going to the side on serve that had little feet on it, missed that two.
- 1:43:40We were just staying over in the press box.
- 1:43:42This has been a terrific series.
- 1:43:43Just a tremendous series of free games.
- 1:43:48Here comes the fifth to him again and a swing and a par.
- 1:43:51Adopted a right.
- 1:43:53The Yankees have four runs, 13 hits and one error.
- 1:43:57The white shot for two runs, four hits and a no error.
- 1:44:04Again, the wind up and the pitchers swing and a tap along the third baseline.
- 1:44:07Stelig's balls, right to first and he's out.
- 1:44:10One away.
- 1:44:14Don probably announced that there's going to be a meeting in Mr. Kamiski's office after the game.
- 1:44:20Between the manager, Casey Stengel, the manager, Al Lopez, the four on fire and the president of the American League, Mr. Will Hart.
- 1:44:30About that's all out here today.
- 1:44:33There will be no announcement made today of any further action taken, but there will be an announcement made tomorrow from the league office.
- 1:44:41Mr. Harris, the league's president's father's affair here today.
- 1:44:45So he's got first hand information.
- 1:44:48Right one on Rookison and a little bit too low to Bob.
- 1:44:53Makes it one and one.
- 1:44:57Stelig's one of the greatest infielders to come into the league in a long time.
- 1:45:02He can really make plays.
- 1:45:04Here's a tap along the third baseline at Spouse.
- 1:45:07One and two.
- 1:45:09Ted Williams has had two homers in the game at Cleveland and the Red Sox have flattened early wins.
- 1:45:18Baltimore and Detroit are nothing and nothing at the end of five.
- 1:45:22Pittsburgh beats Cincinnati.
- 1:45:24The Giants beat the Cubs again and Milwaukee beat Brooklyn.
- 1:45:30So there you have all the dope on all of the other games.
- 1:45:36We have a one and two count on Richardson and a swing and a pop pop play on the ball to the left of the plate while they're getting over and he's got it.
- 1:45:45Just pull it off.
- 1:45:53And filling up the shortstop, Gil McGoogle.
- 1:46:01McGoogle has been up strong.
- 1:46:03He hit into a double play or he struck out in the first inning and it was turned into a double play.
- 1:46:09He doubled in the third and he doubled in the fifth.
- 1:46:16Spacing Jerry Shaley with two out in the sixth inning and a spike.
- 1:46:21Sidearm of beauty.
- 1:46:23That's the old playing very close to the ball line.
- 1:46:35Here's the fifth to him a swing and a ground ball right down the ball line and just outside the bag and it's like two.
- 1:46:47The Washington series, a four game series gets underway tomorrow night with a night game.
- 1:46:52Washington Saturday and a pig. It's got a double penalty.
- 1:47:01Again the wind up in the fifth.
- 1:47:03A swing and a ground ball to the ball.
- 1:47:05Nice stop by Spaley.
- 1:47:06Thanks a first he does.
- 1:47:16In that inning it's three up and three down.
- 1:47:18No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 1:47:26And the score at the end of the first half of the sixth inning is still Yankees four runs and 13 hits.
- 1:47:35Three one-stop, two runs and a score again.
- 1:47:39Here's Loller.
- 1:47:48The first pitch from Diffmarr is swinging at a high curve and a ball is just like one.
- 1:47:53Loller has been up twice, he's climbed out twice to center field.
- 1:47:58The outfield is playing him around a little bit to the left.
- 1:48:11Diffmarr leans forward up like a foot and a swing and a high hit, ball ball past third.
- 1:48:18Just missed the bag by about an inch.
- 1:48:21Oh there was a sure double to be that a straightened up.
- 1:48:34New ball has been tossed out to the mound and Loller is getting back in the batter's box.
- 1:48:38Nobody on and nobody off.
- 1:48:53Now the pitcher takes so much time that Loller gets tired of waiting and steps out of the batter's box.
- 1:49:01Here comes the pitcher and they swing and another fly ball to deep center,
- 1:49:08and a little back he's got that ball to the off.
- 1:49:16I'm going to bring up the first statement, Billy.
- 1:49:21Billy struck out in the first inning and bounced out in the third inning.
- 1:49:34Very silly in the batter's box with the outfield pulled around to the right.
- 1:49:41And a strike right at the net.
- 1:49:47Coleman playing third, McGoogle at York, Richardson at second and Scowram at first.
- 1:49:54Dave Philly a switch-hitter butting left handed takes the ball in the dirt one and one.
- 1:50:03The socks scored first getting two runs in the second.
- 1:50:07The Yankees picked up one in the third and then three in the fifth.
- 1:50:14Here's the pitch to Philly that's a slow ball and a beauty right across the net.
- 1:50:19Dave Philly walks away from the plate, gets a little dirt on his hands,
- 1:50:31steps up in there again.
- 1:50:34The outfield is playing him around a little bit to the right with the right fielder playing very deep.
- 1:50:44One of two caught on Philly and a swing and a foul on the ground.
- 1:50:52The best plan to come out this weekend and see the series with Washington are all big and important ball games.
- 1:50:59This will be your last chance to see the White Sox for a couple of weeks because the team goes on the road on Monday
- 1:51:06and will be gone for a little over two weeks.
- 1:51:12One and two counts to Philly, a slow ball at low inside, ball two.
- 1:51:21Ball two and strike two.
- 1:51:27Bismar looking down at the catcher, Darrell Johnson.
- 1:51:32Wind up in the next pitch, a swing and a base hit.
- 1:51:36Base hit in the left field.
- 1:51:42Dave Philly crossed the Yankees up that time, they were expecting him to pull the ball to the right field
- 1:51:49and instead of that he shot the ball between short and third in the left field for a hit.
- 1:51:54His half field is bad. Two for two.
- 1:52:03Flaming half field stepping in.
- 1:52:09The team made a first base and a swing with a high curve and a miss.
- 1:52:14Like this.
- 1:52:16Now the Yankees are starting a pitcher throwing in the bullpen instead of field.
- 1:52:23It's Tommy Byrne in the left center.
- 1:52:28Half field cuts and follows the ball back on the swing, strike two.
- 1:52:37Half field got into the game.
- 1:52:40When after they brawl early in the game, Gopal and Dolby were safe.
- 1:52:48The Yankees, Flutter and Billy Marks were safe.
- 1:52:53Then later, Whitey Ford was safe.
- 1:52:56That field swings and misses striking out a fast ball high at play three.
- 1:53:05Here's Laverne.
- 1:53:11Laverne has got a real big gun in the series for the Whitey.
- 1:53:16The first time up today with that field off first,
- 1:53:22blind a hole run off the foul ball in right field.
- 1:53:29Here's Jim in the batter's box.
- 1:53:34The first pitch to him, a swing and a ground foul along the first base line.
- 1:53:40The American League is brought to an eighth, please don't want to be under seven.
- 1:53:44All the more nothing, it's twice nothing at the end of five.
- 1:53:51Here's the Yankees four and the White Sox two in the last of the six today.
- 1:53:55And a ball, a little bit too long.
- 1:54:05Ball one and strike one.
- 1:54:10Here's a small right-hander. Takes his step off,
- 1:54:15drives to his forehead with his sleeve, gets that again.
- 1:54:21Base runner at first, he's watching him.
- 1:54:24Here's the pitch and a swing and a foul back on the screen.
- 1:54:28And a straight up fire is getting a new supply of baseball.
- 1:54:34Wow, wow.
- 1:54:42Somebody wires in for them, Delmhurst to explain the infield fly row.
- 1:54:47Well, I imagine that there are new fans listening all the time to ball games
- 1:54:52and we'll explain it, we get a chance.
- 1:54:54Here's a queen and a miss, Rivera struck out.
- 1:54:58That was a curve ball between the waist and the letter and he struck out.
- 1:55:03And the inning no runs, one hit and one man lucked down the base.
- 1:55:08He had the sixth full innings at Chicago.
- 1:55:11It's the Yankees four runs, 13 hits, one error.
- 1:55:14White Sox two runs, five hits and no error.
- 1:55:20And we're going into the top of the seventh inning.
- 1:55:23Mickey Mantle will lead off, he'll be followed by Scowrens.
- 1:55:27And then by the right fielder, Hank Sparrow.
- 1:55:31At three times, he has a single and a double.
- 1:55:38Now Jerry Staley gets ready and the first fixture ends very close to high above.
- 1:55:43The Tigers have taken a two run lead over Baltimore at Detroit.
- 1:55:54Staley is winding up again in the fifth to Mantle, that one was really close, ball two.
- 1:56:08Two and nothing now for Mickey Mantle.
- 1:56:12Here comes the fifth, it's low in close for ball three.
- 1:56:20Nobody on and nobody out.
- 1:56:25Staley getting assigned again from Roller and a strike right across the way.
- 1:56:37Maxwell hit a baller for Detroit in the fifth inning with nobody on.
- 1:56:42That's one third to run, here comes the fifth to Mantle and it's too high, they come low.
- 1:56:52That is the third time in four times that Mantle is weak today.
- 1:56:57And it's going to bring up Scowrens who have two hits in three times up and the last time they run.
- 1:57:04That's how it is.
- 1:57:14Here comes the first fifth to early ground foul, master and son-son.
- 1:57:25Rocks have a right-hander foul throwing in the bullpen in left field.
- 1:57:30He's had burns throwing for a while but he's going back to surround again.
- 1:57:36Here's Mickey Mantle on first base and Scowren makes it very close to the lead at all.
- 1:57:48Ball one is like that.
- 1:57:52With Matt Field guarding in a foul line, and also Berry geeks in left field.
- 1:57:59And throw to first base, Mantle's back on the bag in the 20th time.
- 1:58:05Ray Fully remember is playing first, and Uncle Phillips is playing center field.
- 1:58:11And again a throw to first, he's back in time.
- 1:58:19There are Scowrens getting tired of waiting and stepping out of the batter spot.
- 1:58:28And the extra in the swing and a miss, Scowren.
- 1:58:34Scowren is right up there with Mantle.
- 1:58:37He runs about it in.
- 1:58:39Mantle now has 40 runs about it in, and Scowren has 37.
- 1:58:47Ball one, Scowren's running.
- 1:58:50Here's a drive into right center field that's going to drop in.
- 1:58:54And Scowren's going to second base, Mantle goes to third, with a double for Moose Go.
- 1:59:00Oh, he is really fast.
- 1:59:11Yankees have runners that second and third with Hank Fowler coming up.
- 1:59:18Scowren struck off the first time, Scowren struck off the second time, and Scowren struck the third time.
- 1:59:29Hank Fowler with the infield, Moose Go.
- 1:59:35That field, Avery Field, Cox, and Fully are playing in the very close.
- 1:59:40The base runner, Scowren, is making that.
- 1:59:47Avery Field is getting inside, and Bowers swings and crashes on a half field.
- 1:59:54And Scowren goes first.
- 1:59:56And Avery with the infield, has third.
- 2:00:00That field, Hank Fowler, tries to get in, but it was late.
- 2:00:03And he fires the ball across the infield to get Bowers one away.
- 2:00:07And I swear by half field, he almost got two.
- 2:00:16He's going to go up there, and he'll be the first to get an additional pass.
- 2:00:25Bowers up.
- 2:00:27Bowers to the way outside.
- 2:00:33The basket infield is still in very close.
- 2:00:36Bowers to the way outside.
- 2:00:39Now the one that's going to run them up.
- 2:00:42And he's going to be the first to get an additional pass.
- 2:00:49So you'll be fast.
- 2:00:51With Dizzy Runners, that second and third, he's awarded a base on balls.
- 2:01:00And he's going to bring up the third baseman, Jerry Colman.
- 2:01:05He is the third baseman that we've had today.
- 2:01:11See what his average is.
- 2:01:14He has eight for 26, and a 308.
- 2:01:19Now to wind up in the pitch for Colman, he's swinging the ground ball through the box.
- 2:01:22Bowers stepping down second out over the first foul, and it's a double play.
- 2:01:30Double play.
- 2:01:31Avery, the only assistant to first play, and it's a double play.
- 2:01:37In that inning, no runs, one hit, two walks, and two men were left on the base.
- 2:01:47So fans, at the end of the first half of the seventh inning starting ball game,
- 2:01:52it's the New York Yankees' four runs, 14 hits, and one hour,
- 2:01:58a White Sox, two runs, five hits, and no, every.
- 2:02:11While they hit off man for the White Sox, we'll be short-stopped really upwards, yes.
- 2:02:16Here we go, on the last half of the seventh.
- 2:02:20The crowd standing for the seventh inning's red,
- 2:02:23and a little Louis steps into the batter's box, and a swing in the base hit, left field.
- 2:02:32There was a ball hit suddenly through the left of Jerry Colman in the left field,
- 2:02:37and that is the base hit.
- 2:02:39And now we're going to get a pinch, and a Ron Loney is coming out to bat for the pitch.
- 2:02:52Here's Norby coming off.
- 2:02:55Norby's about to do to get Ron arrived, too.
- 2:02:58He's at two for 15.
- 2:03:11Now the Yankees start a right-hander's drawing.
- 2:03:17They start a right-hander's drawing.
- 2:03:22And here is Ron Loney stepping into the batter's box with a teammate on first base,
- 2:03:29and nobody on it.
- 2:03:32This is the last of the seventh.
- 2:03:38Here comes the pitch to him, a swing in the ground ball to second,
- 2:03:42and then knocking out over the course, out a double-climb.
- 2:03:49Ron Loney slept that ball hard on the ground, but right at Richardson,
- 2:03:54whipped it over to McDougall, McDougall to scour it, and it's a double-climb.
- 2:04:04That's going to bring up the leadoff man, Muddler Phillips.
- 2:04:12There's Phillips.
- 2:04:14He's been up three.
- 2:04:16He started the game at third, and then was moved into the offfield, and a swing in a miss.
- 2:04:21He struck out in the first inning,
- 2:04:23played out in the second inning,
- 2:04:25and bounced out in the fifth inning.
- 2:04:32And again, the switcher-dismarred looks down at Darryl Johnson.
- 2:04:36Here's a swing at a fast curve and a miss.
- 2:04:39Back to him.
- 2:04:46Well, it looks like we might be going to have an inning here in the home seventh,
- 2:04:49which is supposed to be the lucky inning,
- 2:04:52when Lully let off with a nice single to left field.
- 2:04:56Here's a swing and a line drive at Coleman, the car in the side.
- 2:05:00There was a line drive at Stornblast Field.
- 2:05:03Coleman went up into the air like a jack out of a box and caught it.
- 2:05:07Two refires to the side.
- 2:05:09In that inning, no runs, one hit, and no one left on the base.
- 2:05:15Bands at the end of seventh, a convo, it's the Yankee four-run, 14 hits.
- 2:05:20The White Dot, two runs, and six hits.
- 2:05:24We're having a right-handed.
- 2:05:26Here's Koffman here, he's won one and lost two.
- 2:05:30He's got 17 innings, given up 16 hits.
- 2:05:34Four runs, they were earned, eight right outs, and six.
- 2:05:38Bases on both.
- 2:05:41In answer to the wire about the infield wire roll,
- 2:05:44when there are runners on first and second, or first, second, and third,
- 2:05:50and less than two outs, a ball that is hit in the air,
- 2:05:54and in the judgment of the umpire, can be caught by an infielder,
- 2:05:57the batter is automatically off.
- 2:06:00This rule was put into baseball many years ago,
- 2:06:02with respect to makes runners, so an infielder couldn't intentionally drop the ball,
- 2:06:06and then the runners wouldn't know what to do.
- 2:06:08Here's the first batter, for the Yankees,
- 2:06:13and it's the Tethier Darrell Justin,
- 2:06:16who runs the swings and follows that ball on the ground, some size.
- 2:06:27Darrell Justin, running right-handed,
- 2:06:30and a fast ball that's outside.
- 2:06:33This probably used to be the property of the Webster, at one time.
- 2:06:41Nobody on, and nobody out in the eighth.
- 2:06:45He'll wind up in the fifth to him, a swing, and a pop-up on the right side,
- 2:06:49box coming in, and he's got it, one out.
- 2:06:54That's going to bring up the Yankee pitcher, Arch Sipmar.
- 2:07:08Here's Sipmar coming up.
- 2:07:12He's going to swing time, find out the first time,
- 2:07:16and bounce out the next three times.
- 2:07:19Yankees are leading four to two in the eighth inning.
- 2:07:25How-how getting a sign, and the first pitch to him,
- 2:07:28a swing and a ball back, like one.
- 2:07:37And the ball's wide.
- 2:07:45Justin went into the game, went out to the ball,
- 2:07:50who was set these days, and his fingers,
- 2:07:53and a ball went one-out, a swing, and a miss,
- 2:07:58for Sipmar, and it's one and two.
- 2:08:04Yankee's there, who had a mask break when a ball hit him on the mask,
- 2:08:07and it fractured his nose.
- 2:08:09Sengler, that's the one that had him back at the plate.
- 2:08:12Just in case a jar from a battered ball on the mask would re-hurt him.
- 2:08:18Here comes the one and two shots for Sipmar,
- 2:08:20and Sipmar, that's three.
- 2:08:22Look at him.
- 2:08:29Here's the lead-off man, Bobby Richardson.
- 2:08:33He sprinkled in the first inning,
- 2:08:36doubled in the third inning,
- 2:08:41came up with an exclamation in the fifth inning,
- 2:08:44and fouled out in the sixth inning.
- 2:08:48First pitch to him, they swing and a ground ball,
- 2:08:50but short, Louis got it.
- 2:08:52There's the bag, he is out, and the batter is out.
- 2:08:56And that inning, three up and three down,
- 2:08:58no run, no hit, and no error.
- 2:09:03So fans, at the end of the first half of the eighth inning,
- 2:09:06it's the Yankee's four-run, 14 hits and one error,
- 2:09:10the White Run two runs, quick pitch, and no error.
- 2:09:16And for going into the last of the eighth inning,
- 2:09:18the attendance is just enough,
- 2:09:20one please thousand, four hundred and one, and a series deal,
- 2:09:28one hundred and twelve thousand, five hundred and forty-eight.
- 2:09:30I want to tell you this has been some series as they replayed it,
- 2:09:33I probably get even a figure at them,
- 2:09:35because these have been pretty terrific games.
- 2:09:38Boxed at the high foul after the last one-spot.
- 2:09:47Lully Fox walked in the first inning,
- 2:09:51bounced out in the third inning, and bounced out in the fifth inning,
- 2:09:55and now takes the ball high to make it one and one.
- 2:10:01Turned out to be a nice Sunday,
- 2:10:05after a very, very black and bleak morning.
- 2:10:12Lully Fox with a number two in the back of his white uniform,
- 2:10:15getting up in there again,
- 2:10:17he's leading off in the last of the eighth.
- 2:10:22And the pitch, a swing and a ground ball to third,
- 2:10:26McDougall fires the first, and I play,
- 2:10:29because that ball hit between the third baseman and the shortstop,
- 2:10:33was hit into the dirt, with a very high bounce,
- 2:10:36and McDougall had to really grab that ball and hurry as well,
- 2:10:39because Fox is a fast man, and he was out, by a second.
- 2:10:44That's going to bring up Manosto, who has one for three.
- 2:10:56Wind up in the fifth inning, a little bit too low and a ball, ball one.
- 2:11:02Going into the game, Manosto with a 285 batting average,
- 2:11:06had 36 runs out of in, and he's home.
- 2:11:11Wind up again by Dittmar and a swing and a ball on the ground, one and one.
- 2:11:23The outfield is playing, Manosto, around to the left,
- 2:11:27there's activity in both, both ends.
- 2:11:32The VCC Dittmar has gone all the way,
- 2:11:35and for the left stock, we've seen three pitchers, Pierce, Staley, and Howell.
- 2:11:42Now the pitcher calls time, and he gets what it looks like,
- 2:11:46and he's cutting some of the, let's try and mud off his,
- 2:12:05the Dittmar. Well, the trading deadline, as all is approaching, as you know,
- 2:12:16the trading deadline is the 15th of June,
- 2:12:21so there may be some fireworks before the deadline.
- 2:12:25Here's a slow ball at high and in full, above two and one.
- 2:12:32What's good like that?
- 2:12:36Wind up and the pitcher may swing in a foul manner.
- 2:12:48All through the play-through, and a no-ball has been tossed out to the mound.
- 2:13:00Getting set again. One out of nobody on, it's the last of the eighth inning,
- 2:13:07and a swing and a pop-up in the infield, Richardson is coming in,
- 2:13:11he's under the ball, he's got it for the outfield.
- 2:13:18That's going to bring up the center of Sherman-Moller.
- 2:13:22Moller's hit the ball hard, every time today, but on each occasion, they slide out the mound in center-fee.
- 2:13:30In the American League, at the end of the seventh inning, Detroit's two and Baltimore one,
- 2:13:34at the end of eighth, it's Boston eighth, and Cleveland three.
- 2:13:41Here's Moller.
- 2:13:45Wind up and the pitcher may swing in a foul on the ground.
- 2:13:56Well, the Washington series, will bring one of the American League's great hitters to Comiskey Park, Roy Steber.
- 2:14:04A very dangerous guy.
- 2:14:07And Washington has been playing much better ball in the last couple of weeks.
- 2:14:11Funny rough. Here's the slow ball, it's low, and outside for a ball, one and one.
- 2:14:22Nobody on and two off. Again, the motion, a swing and a slow curve in the mix.
- 2:14:32Pittsburgh, knocked off Cincinnati again today.
- 2:14:36Those pirates are really rolling again.
- 2:14:42Ball one on the strike to Comi-Moller.
- 2:14:45Trying to get something started here on the eighth inning after two or up.
- 2:14:51Here's a swing and a foul-fist.
- 2:14:58Well, Billy Ferris, who's had a tremendous record, ten and two.
- 2:15:02And out after his eighth straight win today, and his seventh consecutive complete game.
- 2:15:09But today, on rather a dark human day, Billy had trouble here with Yankee,
- 2:15:18and a one and two count on runner, it's way low and outside for a ball.
- 2:15:27Billy will very probably start the Baltimore series, that's Baltimore, and I will be choosing that.
- 2:15:35Here's a swing and a foul on the ground.
- 2:15:42Those pirates are really rolling again.
- 2:15:48Ball one on the strike to Comi-Moller.
- 2:15:51Trying to get something started here on the eighth inning after two or up.
- 2:15:57Here's a swing and a foul-fist.
- 2:16:04Well, Billy Ferris, who's had a tremendous record, ten and two.
- 2:16:08And out after his eighth straight win today, and his seventh consecutive complete game.
- 2:16:15And out after his eighth straight win today, and his seventh consecutive complete game.
- 2:16:22And out after his eighth straight win today, and his seventh consecutive complete game.
- 2:16:32Billy will very probably start the Baltimore series, that's Baltimore, and I will be choosing that.
- 2:16:48Here's a swing and a foul on the ground.
- 2:16:53Ball two and a strike to Comi-Moller with the outfield playing him around a little bit to the left.
- 2:17:03Ball three, too low.
- 2:17:08Beyond that center is Dave Burr.
- 2:17:18Billy has been up three times, and the last time, he got himself a nice state set in the left field.
- 2:17:26Here's a hit to Loller, a swing and a long drive in the left field.
- 2:17:31It may be gone, it's a home run, yet again.
- 2:17:40There was a long drive into left field, and a home run for Loller.
- 2:17:45A wide-owl, Loller, and a box of wide-owls to go.
- 2:17:51That's Loller's sixth home run, and his 31st run, got it in.
- 2:18:03Or that was some drive.
- 2:18:06The only reason that I couldn't call it right away is because it was just very high in the air,
- 2:18:11and sometimes you don't get really a good look at it when it shows very high.
- 2:18:18When it's a line's wide, you can tell right away, but with a very high fly ball, you can't be quite sure just where it's going.
- 2:18:27Now here's Dave Sully, and a ball that's a little bit close, and a ball wide.
- 2:18:38Well, this is a very close game.
- 2:18:41Dankies are leading 4-3, two out in the last of the eighth inning, and a ball is close again, ball two.
- 2:18:57Jerry Coleman goes over from third to say something to the pitcher, Dipmoss.
- 2:19:05And there's the next pitch to Filly. A swing at a blizzard is set afield. It's going to drop in.
- 2:19:10Dave Sully gets the second pitch, and that's going to bring up the third baseman, Buddy Hedges.
- 2:19:24There was a blue pitch in a set of field that McGoogle was racing for,
- 2:19:30and he smashed the water all around out there in short-batter field. It didn't reach that ball,
- 2:19:35and it's going to bring up Buddy Hedges, who has two-foot-three.
- 2:19:49There's Hedges.
- 2:19:53The third pitch to Buddy is a fastball, it's in both the ball and the ball wide.
- 2:20:03Well, the crowd has had a lot of excitement today, and getting some more here in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:20:12The next pitch to Hotfield is a fastball at low, the ball two.
- 2:20:23The Yankees have a left-hander and a right-hander throwing in the bullpen in Saturday.
- 2:20:33Paulman is to get over at the mound, talking with DeFar. Yankees with four runs, 14 hits, and one error.
- 2:20:42White shots with three runs, eight hits, and no error.
- 2:20:50That field takes the ball at low, ball three.
- 2:21:02Bob Grimm and Tommy Burns are the Hedges out there in the bullpen in Saturday.
- 2:21:11That field takes a spike right across the knee.
- 2:21:19One run is in on a Homer by Lawler. The tying run is at first base, two runs, and that field is the better.
- 2:21:30Billy's running, swing and a ground ball to the first base, and a nice jab, runs to the bag and is out, retiring the foul.
- 2:21:39Gollum made a nice jab at that ball, but it must have had it look like it might be going to be a hit.
- 2:21:45And that jab requires the foul.
- 2:21:48In that inning, one run, two hits, and one man left.
- 2:21:55Tom McGill. Gollum's at the end of eight pull-innings at the end of the game.
- 2:22:00Yankees four runs, 14 hits, and one error. White shots, three runs, and eight hits, and no error.
- 2:22:07John St. Williams just put the ball in Homer at Cleveland.
- 2:22:15Harris McDougall, sucking into the batter's box.
- 2:22:19He'll be caught up by Mickey Mantle and then Gollum. Bigsy haul on the mound.
- 2:22:26The Yankees are leading four to three as this ball game moves into the ninth inning.
- 2:22:33The first pitch to McDougall, a swing and a big hit is left here.
- 2:22:38Single, into left-field.
- 2:22:45That's going to bring up Mickey Mantle. He singled in the first inning.
- 2:22:50He bounced out in the third inning. He doubled in the fourth inning, and he walked in the seventh inning.
- 2:23:06Mickey Mantle facing Howell and batting West Ended.
- 2:23:11The first pitch, he's been very close and high for the ball.
- 2:23:15Gollum.
- 2:23:20Runner at first base, nobody out, ninth inning. The Yankees are leading four to three.
- 2:23:25And what a battle, what a game, what a day this is then.
- 2:23:33Skinny eyes are signed and a perfect strike right across the knee.
- 2:23:40Beyond that kidder is the first baseman, Bill Scowler.
- 2:23:49Base runner moving away at first base. There's a swing and a double play ball to second.
- 2:23:55To second out, over the first, safe, no double play.
- 2:24:01Mantle and a ground ball, sharply at box.
- 2:24:04He's got the ball to Louise for the foreshadowed second, and the return throw, just missed doubling Mantle, one of the fastest men in the big league, while fraction of the semifinal.
- 2:24:21That's going to bring up Scowlin.
- 2:24:29With a Yankee base runner, Mickey Mantle at first base, Scowlin is stepping into the better spot.
- 2:24:36And a swing and a foul on the ground, along the first base line, one strike.
- 2:24:49And he's got a good run in the second, three homers in one game. We have one of those here at Chicago, you remember, about three or four weeks ago.
- 2:25:02And today at Cleveland, he again is at three homers in one game.
- 2:25:08Good job, Mantle, stated first.
- 2:25:18Three homers, keeping a watchful eye on Mickey Mantle. Scowlin, a big right hand hitter in the battered box, and a ball across the corner of the knee, two and one.
- 2:25:32And the right hand hitter is the right-fielder, Hank Scholler.
- 2:25:50Mantle has 18 homers, Williams now has 17 homers, and a little bit too low. Second, ball free, three and one.
- 2:26:06Bill Scholler, targeting first placement of the New York Yankees.
- 2:26:12The closer boy who went to Oberhide School, here comes the 3-1 pitch, Mantle going, strike, throw the second base, he is in there.
- 2:26:22The throw was high, and it's a Scowlin base. Ball three and strike two per shot.
- 2:26:35The throw to Nelson Fox was a little bit too high, and Mantle got in there while Fox is going up and was coming down with the ball.
- 2:26:46Now the Yankees have a base runner at second, with one out, a 3-2 count on Scowlin.
- 2:26:54They're leading 4-3 in the ninth inning.
- 2:26:58And a swing and a ground ball to the shortstop, Williams got it, fires the first, and it's out at first, really made a nice pickup on the bad floor.
- 2:27:12That's going to bring up the Yankee right-fielder, Hank Scholler.
- 2:27:21The baller has been up four times, broke out in the first inning, bounced out in the third inning, bounced out in the fifth inning, and did the same in the seventh inning.
- 2:27:35So here's Baller for the Yankees with two out at Mantle on second base in the ninth.
- 2:27:42And the Yankee to him, strikes, that is the name.
- 2:27:53The umpire takes a look at the ball, decides that it's okay, and throws it back to Hall.
- 2:28:05And the Yankee to him, goes back to Mantle with a pretty good lead off second base.
- 2:28:13And now he flops, keeping him worried.
- 2:28:17Here's a pitch to baller, a swing, and a foul to the right-fielder.
- 2:28:23The veteran right-fielder of the New York Yankees, going into the game with a 269 body coverage, 26 runs, routed in, and eight, one run.
- 2:28:42Hall gets the new ball and rucks it around in his hands a bit, looks down at Scholler again getting his side.
- 2:28:54And here comes the pitch to baller, it's been too close above the knee for a ball.
- 2:29:00The Yankees with four runs, 15 hits and one error, the White Stocks with three runs, eight hits, and no error.
- 2:29:14Here's Hall again getting his side and a swing and a foul through the box.
- 2:29:19Here he made a great stop to whole Mantle at third with the base hit.
- 2:29:24That'll bring up Yogi Berra.
- 2:29:30There was a base hit right through the box and a great stop by Appuicio, with Mantle from the start.
- 2:29:38But there was no play on the batter at first.
- 2:29:42Now the Stocks have a left-handed lapon going in the ball pen and center field, and I believe that they're going to call him in now to pitch to Yogi Berra.
- 2:29:50That's it.
- 2:29:58While we're waiting, let's give them a station break right here.
- 2:30:03This is the WCFL Chicago White Stocks Baseball Mantle.
- 2:30:10This is WCFL, the voice of labor, in Chicago.
- 2:30:16Here's Anne for Hall, who is going out.
- 2:30:25The foul was coming in from center field, is making his 13th appearance of the year.
- 2:30:32He doesn't have a win nor is he charged with a loss.
- 2:30:36He's put 13 on a fracture inning, given up six runs, two runs that were both earned, seven strikeouts,
- 2:30:44and the foul makes the stop ball, and his earned run average is 1.3-0.
- 2:30:51So the foul is on its way in from center field.
- 2:30:56Yakis have runners on first and on third.
- 2:31:00The batter to greet him will be Yogi Berra and the first two away.
- 2:31:07Don, what have you heard on the pitching for the Washington series?
- 2:31:11The only game.
- 2:31:14That's all Bob. That's the only information that any show has given us so far.
- 2:31:18Looking over the standings of the American League in a farce, the player was set up before with
- 2:31:23Detroit, Boston, and Cleveland, so it's quite late back there.
- 2:31:27That's the way our game is.
- 2:31:29And a half separation between the three teams.
- 2:31:32And they've watched the Red Sox today, ate a bear car, by beating Lake Claesden-Indeas.
- 2:31:37And the Red Sox, they played a tight game for that Baltimore on the board, a few to one mortgage.
- 2:31:43So the Red Sox ate a bear car, too, and managed to stay away from Boston at the same time that this
- 2:31:50was unable to strike now.
- 2:31:52They go back into the number three spot in the American League standing, as they played with Indians last today.
- 2:31:58In any event, regardless of the pitching operation for this series coming up,
- 2:32:02they've affected a fourth one, because this will be it now for the home stand.
- 2:32:07The White Sox will have to be on the road for a couple of weeks or so through that mark.
- 2:32:11I noticed they know it on the picture that their 11th period in that Cleveland game today.
- 2:32:15So that means that the great White Hander who's finished sideline is about ready to go back to wood.
- 2:32:21The score will start working out.
- 2:32:25I believe it's July 15th.
- 2:32:27They've decided that that is the date.
- 2:32:31And of course, that's been quite a handicap to manager Kirby Ferrell to have two great figures like Lemon and Store both out of the game.
- 2:32:44Well, they're ready to go.
- 2:32:51Kirby Ferrell stepping in. Ferrell has been up fourth time, flight out the first time, single the second time,
- 2:33:02walks the third time and the fourth time.
- 2:33:07Mickey Mantle's on third base, Hank Bowers on first base, and there's two away.
- 2:33:15A swing and a fall on the ground once more.
- 2:33:22Now, the POM would like very much to hold him in check because the White Sox are trailing only by a run
- 2:33:32and want to get a shot here in the nice inning and try to pull this ball game out of the fire.
- 2:33:44Kirby Ferrell playing in left field for the Yankees and a ball that's in too close.
- 2:33:53The fellow who even though his batting average is 217 is 20 things.
- 2:34:00One of the best hitters in the American League.
- 2:34:04And a swing and a fall on the ground along the first base line expect to.
- 2:34:13The POM using that knuckle ball on Yogi.
- 2:34:18Now the POM doesn't like the new ball that was thrown out there and he's getting another one.
- 2:34:26The POM turns his back on Ferrell showing up number 31 on the back of his white uniform.
- 2:34:44Here comes the Pipsa Ferrell, he's swinging the ground over the mound easy.
- 2:34:47He sees out, he's running the ball.
- 2:34:57In the end of the first half of the mysame, the Yankees four run 16th for White Sox, three runs and a table.
- 2:35:09Now they have a new pitcher coming on the scene for the Yankees with Bob Grimm who's making his 16th appearance of the year.
- 2:35:18He's put 25 and 2 third on him, given up 19 hits. Grimm has won six games and has lost two.
- 2:35:28He's got nine runs scored on him, they all earned. 12 bases on balls, 19 strikeouts and his earned run average is 3.1.
- 2:35:46Coming up to lead off for the White Sox against Grimm will be the White Shielders, Jungle Jim Silver.
- 2:35:55Don I think I'll get a, sit down to the IAC tomorrow and get him a steam bath for a couple of hours and try to blow this, try to blow this ship pole that I can't get rid of.
- 2:36:11Bob Grimm getting in his practice brawls and they played up our hurry map of standing off to the side of the plate, watching him.
- 2:36:26See Rivera, Luis Aparecchio who has a hit and a walk and then probably a pinch hitter for the 50s.
- 2:36:43Bob Grimm number 55 on the back of his way uniform, Yankees dragging around the infield, Coleman is third, McGoogle is short, Richardson is second, Schallen is first and here is Jim Rivera.
- 2:37:08Jim Rivera stepping in. Bob Grimm leans forward on his right foot. Here is the first pinch to him, it's very close but it's me and all.
- 2:37:24Nobody on and nobody off. Yankees are leading 4-3, boy what a travel season this. Wind up in the next pinch to him, they swing and they follow on the ground, that's the left, 1-1.
- 2:37:40Last night three white shots were winners over the Yankees 7-6. They go back and forth in the American League by 5 of the 4 games. These have been great terrific games.
- 2:38:00John C. was playing Rivera around to the right. Nobody on and nobody off. Again the wind up in the next pinch to him, it's a fast ball, it's a little bit of high and outside the ball makes it 2-1.
- 2:38:21Ball 2 in strike 1. Bob Grimm looks down at Carroll Johnson again, he gets ready and a perfect strike, right across the knee.
- 2:38:40He's lead by a run but in the next department they've made 16 hits to 8. Ball 2 strikes 2 count on Rivera. Grimm taking a little bit of extra time. Now the motion and strike 3, back ball, what a cross for me.
- 2:39:04Ball that on strike. That's going to bring up the shortstop, Lewis Appalachia.
- 2:39:19Here's little Louis, look out in the second inning, walked in the fourth inning and slapped a fake hit into left field in the seventh inning. The first pitch to Louis is a little bit too close, right at the knee, ball 1.
- 2:39:44Number 11 on the back of his white uniform, come on, Louis, it's number 2 lay. Back pitch to him a strike on the outside corner, right about to the end.
- 2:40:01Well the white stock this weekend will entertain the Washington Senators, Royce Evers, Eddie Yolk, Reynolds, all that game will be here.
- 2:40:15Four games, a night game tomorrow, single game on Saturday and a double header on Sunday. And if it's to Louis a high long foul is going way down into the right field corner and out of play, and it's a ball 1 and a strike 2 count.
- 2:40:31And again a new ball has been swapped out to the mouth. The outfield is strong way around through the left. Little Louis, in the batter's box, trying to get something started here with one out of the right.
- 2:40:59The pitcher again leaning way forward. Here is a fast ball that missed, it was a little bit too low. A little bit too low on the outside corner, out of the ball 2 and a strike 2 count.
- 2:41:18There are rumors of trade in the air. The second to June is the setback. Here comes the ball 2 strike 2 pitch and a ball ball free.
- 2:41:36He didn't swing at it. He started through but he stopped inside and Casey Stingles jumped right out of the ecce stucco.
- 2:41:53Third baseman, Coleman, is over at the mound talking with Grimm and we may have Earl Paddy to swing for the catcher or West Maw. To swing for the pitcher.
- 2:42:12Here is the pitch to Louis is swinging at a very high foul that is going out of play off to the right and we still have a free 2 count.
- 2:42:28Well I don't think that any of the over 23,000 who are out here today have worked. Grimm has been the wind up again and he is swinging the ground ball to short. McDougall has got it to play and he is out to a left.
- 2:42:48Next Johnovan is going to bat for the pitch. Johnovan is going to bat for the pitcher and he is walking out towards the plate right now. Here is the inoff play.
- 2:43:17Here is Johnovan who will probably pitch the game tomorrow night against Washington. He is a good hitter. He bats more than it.
- 2:43:25McDougall came into the mound to say something to the pitcher but Grimm, Jerry Coleman also came in to say something to him and now here is Johnovan in the batter's box.
- 2:43:40The first pitch to him and swinging the ground ball to Sowerham, I bounce the run to the ball and the ball came to Sabre and the Yankees win this game today 4-3.
- 2:43:51The hard football game with Buddy of thrills, the final score, the New York Yankees score and the West Docs 3.
