- 0:08Speaker 1: So, just a little message before we get started. So,
- 0:11Speaker 1: on this episode, we discuss director Albert Pune. And we
- 0:15Speaker 1: bring him up because his wife had been posting things
- 0:17Speaker 1: about him online, and he'd been having health problems in
- 0:20Speaker 1: recent years, and she knew things weren't looking good, and
- 0:24Speaker 1: wanted his fans to send him some nice messages that
- 0:26Speaker 1: she could read to him. Well, the sad news is
- 0:29Speaker 1: that Albert passed away recently. But Sam and I actually
- 0:32Speaker 1: recorded our discussion several weeks ago, so it was before
- 0:36Speaker 1: he was gone. So I just didn't want people to
- 0:38Speaker 1: wonder why we didn't mention the fact that he was
- 0:40Speaker 1: already gone. And truthfully, if we knew, we probably would
- 0:43Speaker 1: have done more of a full-fledged tribute to him because
- 0:46Speaker 1: we're both big fans of Albert. And well, we definitely
- 0:49Speaker 1: would have said something a little more final at least.
- 0:51Speaker 2: But maybe that just means we need to.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Put together a special episode in the future. But until then,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I just wanted to let you know why we didn't
- 0:58Speaker 1: mention his passing, and actually, if you're a fan, or
- 1:01Speaker 1: even if you're just interested, Google Albert Pune and learn
- 1:04Speaker 1: more about him. He had a fascinating life and career,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and his wife has been posting some really nice and
- 1:11Speaker 1: heartfelt things on Facebook, so if you're interested, go check
- 1:13Speaker 1: it out. So anyway, just wanted to clarify things before
- 1:16Speaker 1: we got rolling, and with that, let's get back into it.
- 1:20Speaker 1: We will jump back into the conversation that we started
- 1:22Speaker 1: last episode. Just a couple of geeks talking about movies.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Here you go.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Hey, this is General Joe Shelby, better known as Martinez
- 1:41Speaker 3: from Dawn of the Dead. And you're listening to the
- 1:44Speaker 3: Diamite Channel on the Movie Meltdown.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Stay tuned and stay tight.
- 2:00Speaker 3: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 2:02Speaker 3: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 2:06Speaker 3: and parental discretion is advised.
- 2:18Speaker 4: It's showtime, folks. Enjoy the show.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Our nuclear reactor, pumping out.
- 2:27Speaker 6: One million kilowatts of power.
- 2:54Speaker 7: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown, I am Brian and.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Joining me once again is Sam and we're back.
- 3:22Speaker 1: We've been going on and on about crazy things. So
- 3:24Speaker 1: hopefully you've listened to last episode because we're going to
- 3:27Speaker 1: be referencing things that we already talked about. So if
- 3:30Speaker 1: you want to do this right, go back and listen
- 3:31Speaker 1: to that last episode. But now we're back to get
- 3:34Speaker 1: into and continue our crazy journey.
- 3:37Speaker 5: There we go. Excellent.
- 3:39Speaker 8: Excellent.
- 3:39Speaker 5: So thanks for having me back, Brian.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Definitely.
- 3:43Speaker 2: This is what makes it all worth it.
- 3:45Speaker 4: There we go.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Crazy conversation.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Speaking of time and place and capturing it and independent
- 3:53Speaker 5: filmmaking and voices of a... I got to see they...
- 4:01Speaker 5: Who cares about the gimmick? In all the regal cinemas
- 4:05Speaker 5: across the country, they re-released Dawn of the Dead 78.
- 4:09Speaker 1: In 3D, okay?
- 4:10Speaker 5: Dawn of the Dead in 3D!
- 4:13Speaker 9: In 3D!
- 4:13Speaker 1: And.
- 4:17Speaker 5: And um okay so i know like the last thing
- 4:20Speaker 5: the internet needs is like two old guys talking about
- 4:23Speaker 5: how awesome dawn of the dead is for the 50
- 4:26Speaker 5: billionth time you know hey.
- 4:28Speaker 1: When have i ever talked about oh wait half of
- 4:32Speaker 1: these episodes right.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Right it's kind of like it's like i think pretty
- 4:36Speaker 5: much uh the internet was invented for like the military
- 4:40Speaker 5: and so people could talk about dawn of the dead
- 4:43Speaker 5: for the rest of their lives that in star wars
- 4:45Speaker 5: but uh.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Pretty much and then bicker and bicker more so with
- 4:50Speaker 1: star wars i think we've all just come to terms
- 4:52Speaker 1: with yes it's.
- 4:53Speaker 5: Perfect it's a perfect it's a perfect movie and and
- 4:57Speaker 5: uh seeing it and the good thing about movies being
- 5:00Speaker 5: broken right now and everything sucking uh is that they're
- 5:04Speaker 5: bringing back these movies you know and It being like
- 5:08Speaker 5: the 40th anniversary of 1982 craziness that that is, you know,
- 5:14Speaker 5: like they've re-released E.T., they've re-released this and that and blah, blah, blah.
- 5:17Speaker 5: you know, for a week because there are no movies
- 5:20Speaker 5: coming out. It's just like there's nothing out. I think we're.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Finally catching up.
- 5:25Speaker 1: We're starting to get back into the old form a
- 5:27Speaker 1: little bit, but it's still not the quantity that it
- 5:30Speaker 1: was pre-pandemic.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Yeah, we live in a world where a major theater
- 5:35Speaker 5: chain released Dawn of the Dead uncut Uh, and, uh,
- 5:40Speaker 5: and a 3d version that I think was made like
- 5:42Speaker 5: basically a decade ago, like in 2013 was the copyright.
- 5:46Speaker 5: So they, they, out of desperation, they dusted this thing
- 5:51Speaker 5: off and, uh, put it up on in not the
- 5:54Speaker 5: smallest theater at the back of the hall. It was
- 5:57Speaker 5: when I went to go see it, it was in
- 5:58Speaker 5: the biggest theater. And, um, I was like, cause you know,
- 6:02Speaker 5: sometimes you go, Oh, I'll go see this little movie.
- 6:04Speaker 5: And they put it in the little theater. I go like, well,
- 6:05Speaker 5: this is barely better than watching it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: You know, I've gotten to that point too.
- 6:11Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 2: And I don't even have a huge TV compared to
- 6:13Speaker 2: some people.
- 6:14Speaker 1: But yeah, I was like, it's not much different.
- 6:17Speaker 5: It's not much different. It's not much different. So you
- 6:19Speaker 5: get the sound mix, right. When you're, you're watching it
- 6:22Speaker 5: in the theater, but yeah, no watching Dawn of the dead.
- 6:26Speaker 5: And you know, you forget the, the 3d thing. Once
- 6:29Speaker 5: your eyes, stop uncrossing. You just forget that it's in.
- 6:36Speaker 9: 3D.
- 6:37Speaker 5: There is a lot of blood splats and glass flying
- 6:40Speaker 5: at the camera. That's true, yeah. It emphasizes. Just watching
- 6:48Speaker 5: that on the big screen. I've seen Day of the
- 6:52Speaker 5: Dead and Dawn of the Dead. I haven't seen Night
- 6:54Speaker 5: yet in the big screen. Day of the Dead was
- 6:59Speaker 5: always my favorite. you know, interesting.
- 7:02Speaker 1: That's usually the, and even with mine, I feel like there's,
- 7:07Speaker 1: there's things I love about it, but overall it feels
- 7:10Speaker 1: not quite up to par with the first two. It's
- 7:13Speaker 1: hard for me to pick a favorite. Cause I think, yeah,
- 7:15Speaker 1: I always get points the first one because it's the
- 7:17Speaker 1: first one because it did. So many things that nobody
- 7:20Speaker 1: had seen before and impacted cinema from that point on.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Where Dawn is just a great sequel.
- 7:26Speaker 1: But I don't know.
- 7:29Speaker 2: It's hard to go between those two.
- 7:30Speaker 1: But Day, I don't know. Day just has a different
- 7:33Speaker 1: trajectory than the other two.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Day is very divisive. And it's probably what killed the,
- 7:40Speaker 5: you know, why he didn't make one again for 20 years,
- 7:42Speaker 5: 30 years.
- 7:42Speaker 8: You know.
- 7:43Speaker 1: It kind of took the wind out of the sails
- 7:45Speaker 1: on that franchise for a while there.
- 7:47Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely. But it was always my favorite. But seeing
- 7:52Speaker 5: Dawn of the Dead in theaters, I was going like,
- 7:55Speaker 5: this is a much more well-rounded movie with the day's
- 8:01Speaker 5: big problem being that people always talk about is there's
- 8:07Speaker 5: no character you can relate to. The zombie.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I mean, the zombie, but the coolest one of the
- 8:14Speaker 1: bunch really.
- 8:15Speaker 2: And everybody, that was my problem.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I think the military guys are so like annoying that
- 8:19Speaker 1: like it takes away.
- 8:20Speaker 5: From the movie.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Whereas we don't.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Really have anybody that bad in like the first two,
- 8:25Speaker 1: like they're all pretty likable. Even if they're the evil characters,
- 8:28Speaker 1: they're like still relatable as a human being where like
- 8:32Speaker 1: the military is just goofy in that third. Oh yeah.
- 8:35Speaker 5: Looney Tunes, Looney Tunes and and and shooting for operatic overacting,
- 8:41Speaker 5: you know, but, you know, when I was a kid
- 8:43Speaker 5: and a teenager, you know, I used to really I
- 8:46Speaker 5: responded to that kind of.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I can see that being the one
- 8:50Speaker 1: that suckers you in if this is like you're you're.
- 8:53Speaker 1: initial you know experience in the dead world and like
- 8:57Speaker 1: especially if you're a kid that grew up on that
- 8:59Speaker 1: kind of you know looney tunes world like of course
- 9:01Speaker 1: you're gonna love that one.
- 9:02Speaker 5: Yeah yeah absolutely you know um but yeah seeing uh
- 9:07Speaker 5: dawn and just the achievement that it is and just
- 9:12Speaker 5: such a uh if you're watching like people like you
- 9:15Speaker 5: know it you know it's just like guy's in the
- 9:18Speaker 5: mall off hours at two in the morning and they're
- 9:21Speaker 5: racing motorcycles through the, uh, the mall is just so awesome. And, um,
- 9:26Speaker 5: it's just got such a, you know, the old JC
- 9:29Speaker 5: Penney's went just catching something at the, in a time
- 9:32Speaker 5: and a place, you know, the old JC Penney's logo.
- 9:34Speaker 1: That last time I watched it, that's all I did
- 9:36Speaker 1: was like Walden books. I just yelled out different stores
- 9:40Speaker 1: that are like, ah, look at that. Like, yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Well, and the stuff that were in those stores, like
- 9:46Speaker 1: there are no stores that are, I mean, I guess
- 9:48Speaker 1: your Walmarts are like everything thrown in there, but looking
- 9:51Speaker 1: at the pennies or wherever they were. And I'm like,
- 9:53Speaker 1: they've got like a hardware department and they got these
- 9:56Speaker 1: wear and then they've got like guns.
- 10:00Speaker 2: That was the, at least there was a gun store.
- 10:01Speaker 1: It made more sense, but there's just several things they're
- 10:04Speaker 1: pulling out of that department store that I'm like, that's
- 10:06Speaker 1: not the pennies that I shopped that, you know, later, like, right.
- 10:09Speaker 1: So I don't know if it's movie version or just,
- 10:12Speaker 1: it was the seventies and they were like, look, we
- 10:14Speaker 1: got one store. It's the mall.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Shut up and come buy this stuff.
- 10:16Speaker 5: That's right.
- 10:17Speaker 3: That's right.
- 10:18Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 10:18Speaker 5: This is what you got, you know?
- 10:19Speaker 1: Um, yeah, no.
- 10:20Speaker 5: So just like going back in time to those malls and,
- 10:23Speaker 5: you know, you know, those circular, uh, You know, and
- 10:27Speaker 5: the pennies are those, they probably still have them. I
- 10:29Speaker 5: just don't go out. But, you know, the circle where
- 10:32Speaker 5: they hang shirts and it's in a circle. When you're
- 10:35Speaker 5: a kid, you can hide.
- 10:36Speaker 1: In the middle. Yeah, the round rack. Sure.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Yeah, you hide in the middle of it.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I've played this game. Absolutely.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Right, right. And so, you know, it just brings you
- 10:44Speaker 5: back to being drugged to pennies as a kid and,
- 10:47Speaker 5: you know, just like how bored you were.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I think you can still do that now. I think
- 10:51Speaker 1: you should head out the one now and just go
- 10:53Speaker 1: sit in the middle of a round rack for a
- 10:55Speaker 1: while and wait until some lady moves a shirt and
- 10:57Speaker 1: is like, oh, God. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:59Speaker 5: But what's amazing about the movie is like everybody talks
- 11:01Speaker 5: about the social commentary and nobody should have told George
- 11:04Speaker 5: Romero that his movies have social commentary because it kind
- 11:06Speaker 5: of ruined his later movies.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that's all he began to focus on.
- 11:10Speaker 5: It was like, oh, that's what I'm known for. So
- 11:11Speaker 5: that's what I'm going to really pile in. But, you know,
- 11:13Speaker 5: when it was just innocent, Dawn of the Dead, You know,
- 11:16Speaker 5: people talk about, you know, oh, the people who are
- 11:18Speaker 5: shoppers are zombies. And I am not a smart person,
- 11:21Speaker 5: but they, you know, watching this movie nowadays, what you get,
- 11:27Speaker 5: it's a sign of a great movie is it just
- 11:30Speaker 5: kind of grows with the society and you're watching it
- 11:32Speaker 5: and you're going like, I mean, here we've got like this,
- 11:36Speaker 5: you know, awesome, you know, kind of like society here.
- 11:43Speaker 5: where you've got all your material needs possessions and, and
- 11:47Speaker 5: they're building a wall around it to keep all the people,
- 11:51Speaker 5: all the others from getting in, you know, and I'm
- 11:53Speaker 5: going like, wow, this is like, this is like, this
- 11:56Speaker 5: seems kind of timely, you know, and everything like, uh,
- 12:01Speaker 5: what I, immigration and stuff. I don't want to, that's
- 12:05Speaker 5: what I'm saying. That's why I say I'm not a
- 12:06Speaker 5: smart person. So I don't want anybody to say like,
- 12:08Speaker 5: People in movie meltdown shouldn't talk about shit they don't
- 12:11Speaker 5: know anything about, you know?
- 12:12Speaker 2: I don't even get that deep into it. Like, I'm
- 12:15Speaker 2: more real world.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Like, I think what's grown on me with that movie
- 12:19Speaker 1: over the years is how much you can just exist
- 12:22Speaker 1: in that world. Like, you just put so much time,
- 12:25Speaker 1: especially once we get to the mall. And like, you
- 12:29Speaker 1: just start to like, I think that's what led to
- 12:32Speaker 1: so many other. zombie movies and post-apocalyptic movies, like getting
- 12:36Speaker 1: into the mundane details of like, okay, now how do we.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Exist at this point?
- 12:40Speaker 1: Because we spend so much time with these characters and
- 12:43Speaker 1: we're just like, okay, this is your little world and
- 12:45Speaker 1: you do have the basics all covered. So what do
- 12:48Speaker 1: you do? And like, how do you go about it?
- 12:51Speaker 1: And like, that is what it just, that's what sticks
- 12:54Speaker 1: with me. Like when I think about that movie, that's
- 12:56Speaker 1: what I think of is the weird little world that
- 12:58Speaker 1: they create all by themselves in that mall and And
- 13:01Speaker 1: you're like, what do you do when that's your entire
- 13:05Speaker 1: world is right there? That's something that's stuck with me
- 13:08Speaker 1: so much with that movie.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Yeah, that movie is like a perfect handbook of how
- 13:14Speaker 5: to survive the apocalypse.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Pretty much, yeah.
- 13:16Speaker 5: Because it takes you through step by step what you
- 13:19Speaker 5: need to do. And what's great, though, is... Yeah, I
- 13:23Speaker 5: liked it. Also, I mean, this is me. Again, I'm
- 13:27Speaker 5: not a smart person.
- 13:29Speaker 1: They are.
- 13:30Speaker 5: they're like in this materialistic paradise and they're ignoring the
- 13:36Speaker 5: fact that the rest of the world is going to hell.
- 13:38Speaker 5: You know, and I was going like, I think that's
- 13:41Speaker 5: kind of like how we are.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I mean, that's that's also like your only option at
- 13:47Speaker 1: that point is like, well, if we're trying to help
- 13:49Speaker 1: other people, we also die.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:51Speaker 1: So we can just be selfish bastards and do our
- 13:54Speaker 1: own thing and not worry about everyone else. And like
- 13:57Speaker 1: that is how they work. Like so it's like there's
- 14:00Speaker 1: no good balance there. There's no in between.
- 14:02Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Like you're either a horrible person or you try to
- 14:06Speaker 1: help people and you get screwed over and die.
- 14:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 5: It's crazy. It's great. I heard one person say once
- 14:14Speaker 5: it was like, uh, it was during the whole Afghanistan thing. Again,
- 14:18Speaker 5: I'm not a smart person, but they were saying like,
- 14:20Speaker 5: there's a, like, uh, uh, they said like, America's not
- 14:24Speaker 5: at work. The American military is at war, but America
- 14:27Speaker 5: is at the mall. And I was going like, it's like,
- 14:31Speaker 5: it's like two totally.
- 14:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 14:32Speaker 5: And I was going like, Oh, the mall, that's like
- 14:35Speaker 5: Dawn of the dead, you know? And, uh, and, uh,
- 14:38Speaker 5: what's your call it? And just, you know, they even
- 14:40Speaker 5: flat out say, you know, uh, the, the, I, I
- 14:44Speaker 5: don't think it's like really a commentary against the zombies
- 14:47Speaker 5: being shoppers. I think it's like showing the survivors. They,
- 14:51Speaker 5: they flat out say, uh, like oh what have we
- 14:54Speaker 5: become you know you know we can't isolate ourselves from
- 14:59Speaker 5: the problem you know and pretend everything's okay with like
- 15:03Speaker 5: gadgets and stuff you know so that's what i got
- 15:06Speaker 5: out that's probably what he was trying to say the
- 15:08Speaker 5: whole time.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I think it was that smart from the get-go like
- 15:11Speaker 1: it really was and like we take all these other
- 15:13Speaker 1: different things from it but at the same time right
- 15:16Speaker 1: the core of the the smart genius commentary is right
- 15:20Speaker 1: from the beginning, from the beginning.
- 15:22Speaker 5: It just took me like 57 screenings to like see
- 15:26Speaker 5: it in that way.
- 15:26Speaker 1: You know, what's funny is I have watched it recently,
- 15:29Speaker 1: but only because I just recently ran across again.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I'm always looking. Oh, I'm still buying DVDs.
- 15:36Speaker 1: What do I, I lost in the olden days, but
- 15:40Speaker 1: I ran across a, the Argento version of, That like
- 15:44Speaker 1: I knew of it and I knew there were some changes,
- 15:47Speaker 1: but I never got around to finding it and watching it.
- 15:50Speaker 1: And yes, I was like, oh, OK, this is my
- 15:53Speaker 1: excuse to, you know, it's it's weird how little it
- 15:57Speaker 1: seems like. Again, I wasn't running them side by side,
- 16:00Speaker 1: so I don't know for sure. There's like one main
- 16:03Speaker 1: scene that I'm like, OK, I don't remember this.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I think this was added in.
- 16:07Speaker 1: But other than that, like so much of it seems
- 16:10Speaker 1: the same to me.
- 16:11Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 16:12Speaker 5: I think they just tightened that middle part.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And there's music cues, but I was like, they make
- 16:17Speaker 1: fun of, you know, his like silly antics with the
- 16:21Speaker 1: pies and the ice skating at the end. But I'm like,
- 16:23Speaker 1: that's still in zombie too. So I'm like, if they
- 16:25Speaker 1: cut it out, they didn't cut much. So right. And
- 16:28Speaker 1: the music's different, but it's still kind of wacky at
- 16:30Speaker 1: that point. So I'm like, he's not really changing it much.
- 16:33Speaker 1: So I think.
- 16:34Speaker 2: You're fine with either version.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I don't think it has to be definitive one way
- 16:37Speaker 1: or the other, but it's not really that different.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Was the interesting thing.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I think I think they cut like, I don't know,
- 16:44Speaker 5: they just made it a little tighter, you know, I mean,
- 16:47Speaker 5: Romero was the editor. So, you know, I probably was
- 16:49Speaker 5: just going like, I am not cutting that shot.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I mean, oh, and it was.
- 16:53Speaker 5: Just so great because, you know. It's so handmade. You know,
- 16:56Speaker 5: it's like there's scenes that are just completely out of focus,
- 16:59Speaker 5: you know, and and, you know, they just didn't have
- 17:02Speaker 5: time to redo it, you know, so it's in the movie.
- 17:05Speaker 5: And so that would never happen nowadays. So it's nice
- 17:08Speaker 5: to see something that looks like a movie, you know,
- 17:10Speaker 5: and not like a Timex commercial.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Much like the John Waters stuff. It was just shooting.
- 17:17Speaker 9: It's just. Yeah.
- 17:18Speaker 1: These are people I know I'm going to go, you know,
- 17:21Speaker 1: he puts more planning and work into it at that point.
- 17:24Speaker 1: But yeah, still, it was a lot of flying by
- 17:26Speaker 1: the seat of your pants kind of thing. Like, yeah,
- 17:28Speaker 1: we got to make this work and we got to
- 17:29Speaker 1: get out of here before the mall opens. So let's
- 17:31Speaker 1: get this shot.
- 17:32Speaker 5: We got to go, man.
- 17:34Speaker 1: We got to go.
- 17:35Speaker 2: You know, we're driving a car through the middle of
- 17:37Speaker 2: this mall.
- 17:38Speaker 1: We got to get out of here soon. So let's go.
- 17:40Speaker 5: Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 17:42Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 17:42Speaker 5: I mean, everybody's, everybody in that movie is just so great. And, uh,
- 17:46Speaker 5: you know, uh, uh, I don't know what can be
- 17:51Speaker 5: said about Don of the dead. I mean, it's freaking great.
- 17:53Speaker 5: And George Romero's 70 work is, you know, I, I
- 17:56Speaker 5: just fall asleep thinking about it, you know, it's so,
- 17:59Speaker 5: it's so wonderful.
- 18:01Speaker 2: He's, he's pretty amazing.
- 18:03Speaker 5: He's, he's a great, I wish I could have met
- 18:05Speaker 5: him before he, he passed on, you know, and.
- 18:08Speaker 1: But very, very briefly long enough for him to go,
- 18:11Speaker 1: what's your name? And he signed up, but he's super nice.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Like again, he, he like, he's, that was so far back.
- 18:18Speaker 1: It was like, we, we talked about it a few
- 18:19Speaker 1: times on the show, but like he, that was when
- 18:22Speaker 1: we went to wonder fest and like, he just kind
- 18:23Speaker 1: of knew the guys that ran wonder fest and he's,
- 18:26Speaker 1: his wife's family was from here and he just came
- 18:30Speaker 1: up and did it. Like he didn't charge anything for
- 18:32Speaker 1: them to like, that would change. You would not see
- 18:34Speaker 1: that 10 years later, but at the time he didn't
- 18:37Speaker 1: charge him for that.
- 18:38Speaker 2: When he got there, he didn't charge for autographs.
- 18:41Speaker 1: He just showed up and like hung out with, fan
- 18:44Speaker 1: and was like shocked by how many people lined up
- 18:46Speaker 1: to see him like yeah couldn't believe it so I
- 18:48Speaker 1: was like I think that's when that perspective changed for
- 18:51Speaker 1: him towards the end when he was like oh I
- 18:54Speaker 1: am a commodity like I can go somewhere and people
- 18:57Speaker 1: will give me money to do this I think he
- 18:59Speaker 1: it became a new career option for him towards the
- 19:02Speaker 1: end that I don't think he realized he had when
- 19:04Speaker 1: he came here but I was really the only time
- 19:06Speaker 1: I saw him yeah.
- 19:07Speaker 5: I think I think a lot of those directors those
- 19:09Speaker 5: genre directors I mean like Toby Hooper I mean I
- 19:12Speaker 5: think they just like I think they got shat on
- 19:15Speaker 5: so much throughout. I mean, Romero was in his forties
- 19:20Speaker 5: when he made Dawn and he had basically gone bankrupt
- 19:23Speaker 5: and was, you know, at, I probably talked about this
- 19:27Speaker 5: at length of the last time we talked, but you know, he, so,
- 19:32Speaker 5: you know, I mean, he, he was kind of a,
- 19:36Speaker 5: he did not achieve his goals of Hollywood stardom or
- 19:40Speaker 5: mainstream movie making. I mean, the thing.
- 19:42Speaker 1: That he was most famous for, he got completely screwed
- 19:45Speaker 1: out of all the royalties for it.
- 19:47Speaker 5: So his other movies were considered not, not, not at
- 19:51Speaker 5: the level of night or, you know, even with Martin
- 19:54Speaker 5: got good critical stuff and kind of got him back
- 19:57Speaker 5: on the map a little bit to get Don made.
- 20:01Speaker 5: But really, it was like Dario Argento pulling him out
- 20:04Speaker 5: of obscurity and taking him off the industrial film route
- 20:08Speaker 5: and saying like, hey, look, you made 9-11 dead. Here's
- 20:09Speaker 5: some money, you know. So but I think these guys
- 20:14Speaker 5: got crapped on so much by the establishment. And Romero
- 20:19Speaker 5: had like so many failed development deals over the time,
- 20:24Speaker 5: over his career, over his latter career. You know, he's
- 20:27Speaker 5: going to make this. It falls apart. He's going to
- 20:28Speaker 5: make that. It falls apart. And then by the time
- 20:33Speaker 5: they washed up on the circuit, on the con circuit
- 20:36Speaker 5: in that maybe late 90s period, they had just been
- 20:40Speaker 5: kicked and been told they were no good. And that's
- 20:45Speaker 5: what it was.
- 20:45Speaker 1: He was just like, it was down the hallway and
- 20:49Speaker 1: around the building and waiting just to get him to
- 20:51Speaker 1: sign something. And I think he was in shock at
- 20:54Speaker 1: that point because, yeah, that was before the rest of
- 20:57Speaker 1: the convention world kicked in.
- 20:58Speaker 5: And he just.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Had no idea people cared that much.
- 21:01Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 21:02Speaker 5: Yeah. When I met Carpenter, I mean, uh, I didn't
- 21:05Speaker 5: have to pay anything for him to sign my three
- 21:08Speaker 5: items or something like that. It was, it was like,
- 21:10Speaker 5: and you know, and you know, he took time to like,
- 21:13Speaker 5: you know, lookie in.
- 21:14Speaker 1: The eye and.
- 21:16Speaker 5: Respond to your question, possibly wink at you.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:19Speaker 5: We got you. Fist bump you.
- 21:20Speaker 1: That was one of our tie-ins, but anyway, somebody still
- 21:25Speaker 1: creeped out by there. Yeah.
- 21:27Speaker 9: Right.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:28Speaker 5: Absolutely, man. Absolutely.
- 21:29Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 21:29Speaker 5: I mean, so, you know, it's, I, I don't know
- 21:32Speaker 5: if there, I know Sam Ramey is going to be
- 21:34Speaker 5: at like Texas fright mayor. weekend or something like that.
- 21:38Speaker 1: He's starting to do those. Yeah, I think there's another
- 21:40Speaker 1: one next year I've heard he's coming to. So that's
- 21:43Speaker 1: interesting that he's starting to head out into the world.
- 21:46Speaker 5: Yeah. So I'm sure he's charging like, you know, $ 100
- 21:49Speaker 5: of whatever. You know, that's fine.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Sign my Spider-Man poster.
- 21:59Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 5: So I don't know, man, it's just like, you know,
- 22:03Speaker 5: there was a time and place where you could meet
- 22:05Speaker 5: your heroes and not have to have a piece of
- 22:07Speaker 5: plexiglass in between you to spend $ 500 with a photo.
- 22:10Speaker 5: You know, I just said like, you know, Carpenter said, Hey,
- 22:13Speaker 5: you want a photo? And he stood up and he
- 22:15Speaker 5: leaned on me and I got the picture and it
- 22:17Speaker 5: was just like, crazy you know it was just a
- 22:20Speaker 5: different time different time different place you know.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I mean i i get it like it it is
- 22:24Speaker 1: especially as you get into these people who didn't make
- 22:27Speaker 1: a ton of money in the industry and the only
- 22:29Speaker 1: thing they have is like a cult following yeah like
- 22:32Speaker 1: you have to go with it like i i.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Can't blame them i sure as hell would be doing
- 22:36Speaker 2: it oh oh.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Yeah like that's the norm. I do feel bad sometimes
- 22:40Speaker 1: when I'm like, Oh, that's all it is anymore. But
- 22:42Speaker 1: at the same time, I'm like, yeah, but that's what
- 22:44Speaker 1: it needs to be for these guys. You know, I,
- 22:46Speaker 1: as long as they're cool, like as long as they're
- 22:48Speaker 1: still a good person, I don't mind if I make
- 22:50Speaker 1: money off of it. You know, that's, that's, you go
- 22:52Speaker 1: with you what you got, man.
- 22:54Speaker 5: It's basically everybody's Tom Savini now.
- 22:56Speaker 1: You know, he still owes me $ 2.
- 23:01Speaker 5: It's basically like, Hey, Tom Savini, are you going to
- 23:04Speaker 5: buy something? Get out of here.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Pretty much. Yeah. He's as charming as his reputation would
- 23:10Speaker 1: lead you to believe. Well, while we're on, you brought
- 23:18Speaker 1: up one of your other heroes that I actually had
- 23:21Speaker 1: a tie-in for. I've been meaning to watch it forever
- 23:25Speaker 1: and couldn't. Again, I'm a dork, so I kept looking
- 23:28Speaker 1: for it in a physical copy. Everywhere I'd go, I'd
- 23:32Speaker 1: be like, nope, don't see it. Oh, well, another time. Finally,
- 23:36Speaker 1: this past weekend, I went, Yeah, it's probably streaming. I mean,
- 23:39Speaker 1: I knew I could buy it and watch it, but
- 23:41Speaker 1: sometimes that annoys me that I pay more for a
- 23:43Speaker 1: streaming copy of something than a physical. So like a
- 23:47Speaker 1: lot of times I'll put off that one, but I
- 23:49Speaker 1: looked it up the other day and it was streaming
- 23:50Speaker 1: for free. And I was like, damn it. I guess
- 23:53Speaker 1: I'm going to be watching invaders from Mars.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Oh, that's cool, man.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Uh, the, uh, the 86 Toby Hooper. Yeah. And I,
- 24:03Speaker 1: I wanted to watch it anyway, but I thought, well,
- 24:05Speaker 1: that will perfectly, you know, roll in. Cause I know
- 24:07Speaker 1: you're a big Toby fan anyway.
- 24:09Speaker 9: Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:11Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 24:11Speaker 1: I finally got around. I, and again, I kind of
- 24:14Speaker 1: remembered it being on cable, but it is one of those.
- 24:16Speaker 2: I didn't count.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Like I was just like, I know it. but I
- 24:20Speaker 1: don't remember sitting down to watch it. Certainly not in
- 24:23Speaker 1: the last 25 or 30 years. So I feel like
- 24:26Speaker 1: I really need to sit down and watch it. So yeah.
- 24:29Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 24:29Speaker 5: Well, and so you sat and you watched it and
- 24:32Speaker 5: it's pretty amazing.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Again, it's, it's like a couple of different things going
- 24:38Speaker 2: on at once.
- 24:38Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Again, we're going back to visuals.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Like it is so bright and so colorful and like,
- 24:45Speaker 1: it's just playing with the visuals as much as it
- 24:48Speaker 1: can and, but at the same time, what's funny is
- 24:51Speaker 1: it's also like so earnest about the type of silly
- 24:55Speaker 1: sci-fi it's trying to be.
- 24:57Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Whereas it's remaking a movie that wasn't like all of
- 25:01Speaker 1: those old fifties. Speaking of commentary, like every one of
- 25:05Speaker 1: them was about, you know, like, or, you know, xenophobia
- 25:14Speaker 1: about something bigger, you know, the horrors of nuclear testing.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Like that's the overwhelming theme. And then we made up
- 25:20Speaker 1: this fake story just so we could tell this.
- 25:23Speaker 5: Right.
- 25:23Speaker 1: I don't get that at all in this Toby Hooper,
- 25:25Speaker 1: but it's just like, yeah. And some aliens and they
- 25:28Speaker 1: come down and they're goofy aliens. And then they're trying
- 25:30Speaker 1: to take us over. Like, it's just so, happy about
- 25:35Speaker 1: being a silly sci-fi movie and does not seem to
- 25:37Speaker 1: worry about telling a deeper darker story about humanity it's
- 25:43Speaker 1: just a big fun sci-fi.
- 25:45Speaker 5: Movie no no it it like uh it is uh
- 25:50Speaker 5: it's it's i would say it's like for me it's
- 25:52Speaker 5: like middle tier hooper yeah.
- 25:55Speaker 1: But it's but it's doing anything amazing really right but
- 25:59Speaker 1: it's so happily doing what he wanted to do Absolutely.
- 26:03Speaker 5: It's, it's this great moment of his three picture Canon
- 26:06Speaker 5: deal where he had enough money to like go for it,
- 26:10Speaker 5: you know, and then supposedly they, they would always take
- 26:12Speaker 5: it from them and, you know, rechop it and, you know,
- 26:15Speaker 5: piss them off. But, but the, the visuals in the
- 26:18Speaker 5: movie are there. And I think the movie for me
- 26:22Speaker 5: suffers from the lead kid performance is maybe a little, not,
- 26:28Speaker 5: not great.
- 26:29Speaker 1: I was going the other way. And this is the
- 26:34Speaker 1: weird world that I've created for myself because I've said before,
- 26:37Speaker 1: I don't think of it as any different, but there's
- 26:41Speaker 1: so many times when I'm like, oh, hey, I know
- 26:43Speaker 1: that guy. Not really. I don't know them in the
- 26:46Speaker 1: real world, but that was one of those. I sat
- 26:49Speaker 1: with Hunter Carson in a room and talked about filmmaking.
- 26:54Speaker 1: This was the one I asked a little bit about,
- 26:57Speaker 1: I think, but again, I hadn't seen it in so long.
- 26:59Speaker 1: He was talking about Paris, Texas.
- 27:02Speaker 2: He's phenomenal in Paris, Texas.
- 27:04Speaker 1: So it's like watching him in this. I was like,
- 27:07Speaker 1: he still kind of comes through is like pretty genuine
- 27:10Speaker 1: as a kid. Like, I think he had that to
- 27:12Speaker 1: him that like, yeah, he comes off.
- 27:13Speaker 2: As a real kid.
- 27:15Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Maybe because this is a bigger scope, you know, Paris,
- 27:17Speaker 1: Texas is so real world.
- 27:19Speaker 8: Right.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Whereas this is.
- 27:21Speaker 1: A much more, again, sort of operatic version of a
- 27:24Speaker 1: sci-fi story.
- 27:26Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Like maybe you need a different type of performance from him.
- 27:29Speaker 1: But I don't know. I was OK with him. I
- 27:31Speaker 1: thought some of the adults were a little sillier. I
- 27:34Speaker 1: felt like his mom in particular.
- 27:37Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Lorraine.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Well, no, his actual mom.
- 27:40Speaker 1: That's funny.
- 27:42Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 27:42Speaker 1: I got into it knowing Karen Black was in there.
- 27:44Speaker 2: I guess she plays his mom. No, she's the nurse
- 27:48Speaker 2: at the school.
- 27:49Speaker 5: The really involved nurse, you know?
- 27:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:52Speaker 2: I was like, she has all, she spends the entire movie.
- 27:55Speaker 1: I'm like, this is weird because yeah, it'd be different
- 27:57Speaker 1: if it was like him and his mom taking on
- 27:58Speaker 1: the aliens, but no, his mom gets taken over immediately.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Like Lorraine Newman.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Who is also awesome.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Awesome. And I do like that. She does her cone
- 28:07Speaker 1: heads voice before things over with.
- 28:09Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 28:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Weird moment. Yeah, totally. But yeah, I was like, Karen
- 28:15Speaker 1: Black is like dialed way up there in some of
- 28:18Speaker 1: these scenes. And she's like freaking out towards the end.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I was like, man, she is swinging from the fences here.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Hunter seems pretty reserved compared to me.
- 28:29Speaker 5: The good thing about Tobey Hoover movies, nobody freaks out
- 28:35Speaker 5: like they do in Tobey Hoover movies, man. I mean,
- 28:37Speaker 5: it's just like, he just thinks he goes like more,
- 28:40Speaker 5: more louder, crazier, you know? And so when people, like
- 28:44Speaker 5: the end of Poltergeist, where she's screaming, like, what's happening?
- 28:46Speaker 5: It's just like, man, shoot for the stars, you know?
- 28:51Speaker 5: But yeah, no, I think, now, I like Invaders from
- 28:56Speaker 5: Mars quite a bit. there's like a lot of little
- 28:59Speaker 5: threads here. You know, my, my favorite part is when
- 29:02Speaker 5: the brain alien is looking down at the guy and
- 29:05Speaker 5: he's going like, poor little guy, poor little fellow. I'm like,
- 29:10Speaker 5: that's like such a weird moment.
- 29:12Speaker 2: I did not expect that.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I was as much as I wasn't phased when the
- 29:18Speaker 1: giant brain alien showed up. But then when we got
- 29:20Speaker 1: to that, I was like, huh, did not see that coming.
- 29:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:24Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:24Speaker 5: I mean, it's like such a, You know, it's like
- 29:27Speaker 5: Stan Winston, the same year he did, you know, aliens, basically.
- 29:31Speaker 5: And but this is like a totally different take on it.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Just like kind of comic booky, wild, crazy designs.
- 29:39Speaker 1: And I mean, those. other the big lumbering winds are
- 29:41Speaker 1: such an awkward design like just like in a way
- 29:46Speaker 1: that I guess is so alien I guess it would
- 29:49Speaker 1: be alien but I'm just like who who drew this
- 29:52Speaker 1: like why is it like that It's so weird.
- 29:56Speaker 5: It's so bizarre. It's so bizarre to see it like
- 29:58Speaker 5: made in made.
- 30:00Speaker 1: In practical form. Yeah, it's not a CG thing. It's
- 30:04Speaker 1: somebody lumbering around in that costume trying to walk with legs,
- 30:08Speaker 1: but then kind of use them as arms sometimes. And
- 30:11Speaker 1: that big giant mounted thing on their head when they
- 30:15Speaker 1: need a laser.
- 30:15Speaker 5: So inconvenient. Who put that on them? They don't have
- 30:22Speaker 5: any thumbs. I guess they just bump into stuff.
- 30:28Speaker 1: How did they design this very intricate thing that goes
- 30:31Speaker 1: in the back of your neck when they don't have it?
- 30:33Speaker 1: functional hands really like is there another guy somewhere with
- 30:38Speaker 1: like 30 thumbs that's like you know putting together all
- 30:41Speaker 1: the tech.
- 30:41Speaker 10: Stuff like yeah they just kind of never see him
- 30:44Speaker 10: just don't see him these guys must be like the
- 30:46Speaker 10: crab things from uh uh dark crystals so yeah you
- 30:51Speaker 10: know but i do.
- 30:53Speaker 1: I do think it was interesting the um because i'm
- 30:55Speaker 1: watching that going.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Man, did they rip off Kang?
- 31:00Speaker 5: Oh, Krang. Yeah, did Krang. Krang.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Yeah, whatever. I was like, this guy just looks like
- 31:05Speaker 2: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And then I went and looked, and.
- 31:07Speaker 1: It's the next year that he debuts. So technically, Ninja
- 31:12Speaker 1: Turtles kind of ripped off Invaders from Mars.
- 31:15Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Because I think he wasn't in the comics. He showed
- 31:18Speaker 1: up in the TV show first, and then later they worked.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Him into the comics.
- 31:22Speaker 1: But yeah, so Ninja Turtles. It's definitely, yeah. kind of
- 31:25Speaker 1: lifting from invaders from Mars.
- 31:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:28Speaker 5: And so it's real interesting. A couple of things here.
- 31:33Speaker 5: All right. So screenplay by Dan O'Bannon on the, that's
- 31:37Speaker 5: amazing too. Right. And Dan O'Bannon once said, getting your
- 31:42Speaker 5: script directed by Toby Hooper is no different than getting
- 31:46Speaker 5: your script directed by Bozo the clown.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Well, there's a touching comment.
- 31:53Speaker 5: Dan dan was known as being all heart you know
- 31:55Speaker 5: yeah yeah so i think toby may have directed like
- 32:00Speaker 5: three movies by o'bannon or at least two um but
- 32:04Speaker 5: uh you know it's real interesting that connection because you
- 32:08Speaker 5: got the guy from return of the living dead in
- 32:11Speaker 5: invaders from mars uh the guy who plays the old
- 32:14Speaker 5: sergeant he played the i can't remember the the character
- 32:18Speaker 5: actor's name but you.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Know james caron James Caron.
- 32:21Speaker 9: Right.
- 32:22Speaker 5: So you interviewed him once, right?
- 32:25Speaker 1: I remember passing by him, but I think he was
- 32:29Speaker 1: we talked to the younger guy. But I think at
- 32:31Speaker 1: that point, James was already gone. So I think he
- 32:34Speaker 1: was I think he had passed on by the time
- 32:37Speaker 1: we went and talked to the younger guy from Returning
- 32:39Speaker 1: the Living Dead.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Was that Tom Matthews?
- 32:41Speaker 9: Yes. Yes.
- 32:44Speaker 1: I did. Yeah.
- 32:45Speaker 2: I like Tom.
- 32:45Speaker 1: He was very nice, but, but yeah, I think at
- 32:47Speaker 1: that point, James was already gone, but I know like
- 32:49Speaker 1: in previous years, I think I'd seen him at conventions
- 32:52Speaker 1: and just didn't ever, again, there's like only so much
- 32:56Speaker 1: I can force myself to do.
- 32:58Speaker 5: Right.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Sometimes I make myself.
- 33:00Speaker 8: Yes.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Okay.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Go like set something up and try to talk to
- 33:03Speaker 2: these people.
- 33:04Speaker 1: And other times not so much. So yeah, not feeling times.
- 33:07Speaker 1: I don't get around to it before they're gone. Yeah.
- 33:10Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 33:11Speaker 5: So, James Cairns in, uh, invaders from Mars is because
- 33:15Speaker 5: he like had a good relationship with Toby Hooper when
- 33:18Speaker 5: Toby Hooper was going to direct return of the living dead,
- 33:21Speaker 5: but then return of the living dead got put on hold.
- 33:24Speaker 5: So Toby went off to make life force and then
- 33:27Speaker 5: Dan got the job to direct return. So that's like a,
- 33:32Speaker 5: that's like kind of a cool, Oh, and James Cairns
- 33:34Speaker 5: in poltergeist too. That's probably why, why James Cairn was
- 33:38Speaker 5: going to be in return. Um, Anyway, the threads. I've
- 33:43Speaker 5: got my yarn out. I'm making these little things on
- 33:47Speaker 5: the cork board right now.
- 33:48Speaker 1: It gets even more crazy if you start working back
- 33:50Speaker 1: to our zombie version of how Return of.
- 33:53Speaker 2: The Living Dead became Return of the Living Dead after
- 33:55Speaker 2: Night of the Living Dead. I've gone down that rabbit hole.
- 33:59Speaker 1: That is crazy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:02Speaker 5: And so anytime you can rewrite John Russo and make
- 34:05Speaker 5: it less like his script, it's.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Probably a good thing.
- 34:09Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:10Speaker 5: But, but yeah, so, but what's real interesting, I've got
- 34:15Speaker 5: another version in my head of invaders from Mars directed
- 34:20Speaker 5: by Toby Hooper that I wish that, that if you
- 34:26Speaker 5: watch the original invaders from Mars from the fifties, you know, I, I,
- 34:33Speaker 5: it was done by the, it was directed by a
- 34:35Speaker 5: production designer and the production design and, and the original
- 34:38Speaker 5: invaders from Mars was, Is incredible. And it also is
- 34:42Speaker 5: got like this hyper real fake set look to it because,
- 34:47Speaker 5: you know, spoiler, all is kind of happening in the
- 34:50Speaker 5: kid's head in a dream. And in the original one, definitely.
- 34:56Speaker 5: And so and so it's kind of got this dream
- 34:59Speaker 5: look to it, you know. So you got the original
- 35:02Speaker 5: Invaders of Mars and then, you know, Toby Hooper directing
- 35:05Speaker 5: a remake is like a dream made in heaven because
- 35:10Speaker 5: if you watch like something like Eaten Alive, which has
- 35:13Speaker 5: like this entire fake set dream hyper real view to it,
- 35:18Speaker 5: I basically wish they could have made, basically I wish
- 35:22Speaker 5: they would have like allowed toby hooper or if i
- 35:25Speaker 5: was telling whispering into toby hooper it's like you should
- 35:28Speaker 5: make it look like eaten alive because that is like
- 35:30Speaker 5: the perfect blend of y'all's two styles you know you should.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Make this look like a high school play yeah just
- 35:41Speaker 1: cardboard sets and homemade costumes.
- 35:44Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 35:44Speaker 5: Weird gels and all the lights coming out.
- 35:47Speaker 1: I'm going like, yeah, you're right.
- 35:48Speaker 5: I mean, Brian, that's why, you know, I'm not in charge. Cause,
- 35:53Speaker 5: cause them making them making the movie that they did.
- 35:56Speaker 5: I think it bombed, you know, and everything. And so
- 35:58Speaker 5: I can't imagine had they done the, uh, high school, uh,
- 36:01Speaker 5: musical version of it, you know, it would have been
- 36:03Speaker 5: much better except for me.
- 36:05Speaker 11: I would have been happy with it, but, uh, Yeah, no,
- 36:11Speaker 11: it's a cool movie, man.
- 36:13Speaker 5: It just, you know, yeah, unapologetically what it is. And
- 36:18Speaker 5: that's what you can sort of say for all Hooper's
- 36:21Speaker 5: movies are they're unapologetically, you know, what they are, you know.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what was like stood out the most out
- 36:28Speaker 1: of this is just how much it did not care
- 36:31Speaker 1: about doing other stuff that some sci-fi films are way
- 36:35Speaker 1: more concerned about doing. He's just like, this is what
- 36:37Speaker 1: I want to do. I want this big monster and
- 36:39Speaker 1: I want him. him running around in a hole in
- 36:41Speaker 1: the ground and I want him like, this old woman
- 36:44Speaker 1: eating a frog.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Like, this is the stuff I want from my movie.
- 36:48Speaker 5: And is there anything better in that scene than when
- 36:51Speaker 5: Bud Cort goes up to a friend of Big Potato
- 36:53Speaker 5: Head alien?
- 36:55Speaker 1: And he didn't bite his head off. I'm just waiting
- 36:58Speaker 1: for him to just chomp on it. Instead, we get
- 37:01Speaker 1: the weird laser. What is that about?
- 37:04Speaker 5: It blows him away with the laser, I think. It's great.
- 37:07Speaker 5: That's always the best scene in those Like in War
- 37:09Speaker 5: of the Worlds, the original, where the priest is coming
- 37:12Speaker 5: up to the aliens. He wants to be friends. Or
- 37:15Speaker 5: whenever anybody tries to befriend the alien, it gets murdered.
- 37:19Speaker 5: That's always the best scenes.
- 37:21Speaker 1: The lesson we have to learn.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Don't trust anyone. Even from space.
- 37:26Speaker 5: Maybe especially from space. Right, right. Especially when they look
- 37:29Speaker 5: like that.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Once again, back to nope.
- 37:32Speaker 5: Don't trust them.
- 37:34Speaker 9: Nope.
- 37:34Speaker 5: They don't look friendly. You got to love a no
- 37:36Speaker 5: pal low rep though. The inside of the alien was
- 37:40Speaker 5: where it looked like inflatable balloons that they're.
- 37:43Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 37:44Speaker 1: I mean, in a way it was like, I like the,
- 37:46Speaker 1: that we're kind of taking it there, but at the
- 37:49Speaker 1: same time, it's so like weird and surreal and, but
- 37:53Speaker 1: super simple.
- 37:54Speaker 2: And yeah, like that's, that's kind of awesome.
- 37:57Speaker 1: And the fact that, it is some weird process that
- 38:00Speaker 1: happens because as it's flying around, you still hear people scream.
- 38:04Speaker 1: And I'm like, that is disturbing. Like, yeah, that is cool.
- 38:07Speaker 1: So yeah.
- 38:08Speaker 5: As they're being digested over a thousand years.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Or whatever, you know?
- 38:15Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:16Speaker 5: That was fantastic. I don't know how much you want
- 38:19Speaker 5: to talk about this, but you mentioned monkey pets and
- 38:23Speaker 5: then you mentioned, then you mentioned Elvis and, And did
- 38:26Speaker 5: you get a chance to see the spectacle Baz Luhrmann
- 38:30Speaker 5: Elvis movie?
- 38:31Speaker 1: I have not seen it. I did watch the this
- 38:35Speaker 1: is what I think like is amazing is like when
- 38:37Speaker 1: you're making a movie that's big enough that you get.
- 38:40Speaker 1: an hour of network.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Television to essentially promote your movie.
- 38:45Speaker 9: Wow.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Before it came out, like one.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Of the big three networks was like, here's an hour.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Come in and talk about, you know, so like I
- 38:53Speaker 1: watched that and learned like way more about the movie
- 38:55Speaker 1: than watching the movie. Probably because we've got Baz there
- 38:58Speaker 1: talking about what he wanted to do. We've got the
- 39:01Speaker 1: entire surviving Presley family was on board and is sitting
- 39:04Speaker 1: there like talking like Lisa Marie and Priscilla are both
- 39:07Speaker 1: there like.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Endorsing this movie.
- 39:10Speaker 1: I was like, that's kind of amazing because I don't
- 39:12Speaker 1: think they've ever done that. There's been a lot of
- 39:14Speaker 1: stories about Elvis over the years. And like, I don't
- 39:16Speaker 1: think they've ever officially come on board with any of them.
- 39:19Speaker 1: And this is something from that angle, like this is
- 39:22Speaker 1: an impressive film. I've actually heard really good things, but
- 39:25Speaker 1: I have not sat down to watch it yet.
- 39:27Speaker 4: All right.
- 39:28Speaker 5: Well, I'm not going to destroy it for you. or
- 39:30Speaker 5: anything like that. But because, you know, the history is,
- 39:33Speaker 5: you know, of course, Baz Luhrmann, you take it or
- 39:36Speaker 5: leave them, you know, take them or leave them.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Pretty much.
- 39:38Speaker 2: I mean, there's not a lot of middle ground in
- 39:40Speaker 2: the Baz Luhrmann world.
- 39:41Speaker 5: And it's like, I've always like, you know, whatever you
- 39:46Speaker 5: go like, oh yeah, boy, I really, Just wish he
- 39:49Speaker 5: would calm down, you know, tell the story.
- 39:52Speaker 1: He kind of does that sometimes. I think that's my
- 39:55Speaker 1: favorite part about Romeo and Juliet because it's insanity for
- 39:59Speaker 1: like the opening 15, 20 minutes. And then it just
- 40:02Speaker 1: sort of like eases its way in and kind of
- 40:05Speaker 1: tells a normal Shakespeare story just with crazy visuals. But
- 40:09Speaker 1: the tone slows way down after that. And doesn't ever
- 40:13Speaker 1: get back to that. So like, that's the closest you get,
- 40:15Speaker 1: I think is because right. Moulin Rouge never calms down.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Like it's back and forth all day long.
- 40:20Speaker 5: I guess what I think it's like, that's the best
- 40:22Speaker 5: and the worst aspects of Baz Luhrmann. It's like, it's like,
- 40:26Speaker 5: it's so impressive, but it's almost just like, you know,
- 40:31Speaker 5: probably like listening to it's just spaz Lerman, you know,
- 40:34Speaker 5: he's just like throwing so much at you that.
- 40:37Speaker 2: It's a kid in their garage with their band.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Going, this is the greatest moment of my life. And
- 40:42Speaker 1: you're in the house going, Oh my God, if they
- 40:43Speaker 1: don't shut up, I'm going to murder that child. So yeah,
- 40:47Speaker 1: he's that kid. He's that excited to be a filmmaker
- 40:50Speaker 1: and whether or not you click with his movies is.
- 40:53Speaker 3: Up to you.
- 40:54Speaker 5: This Elvis was the first one that I totally clicked
- 40:58Speaker 5: with and, you know, and I was just going like,
- 41:01Speaker 5: this has like all of his strengths, but it has
- 41:06Speaker 5: this really, really strong story. And, you know, I guess
- 41:10Speaker 5: being raised by Elvis fans, I was predisposed to it
- 41:14Speaker 5: since I know the music and I kind of know
- 41:16Speaker 5: the history and, and my, my step grandmother who came
- 41:21Speaker 5: from Germany, probably married my, step grandfather because he looked
- 41:26Speaker 5: like Elvis. And she was just like crazy about Elvis.
- 41:30Speaker 5: And my, my stepdad's crazy about Elvis and everybody's crazy
- 41:33Speaker 5: about Elvis and on one side of the family. So
- 41:36Speaker 5: I had all this stuff going on. They had like
- 41:38Speaker 5: an Elvis, you know, a personalized license plate on their Cadillac,
- 41:42Speaker 5: you know? I mean, that was just like, it was
- 41:44Speaker 5: just like Elvis fever in this one side of the family.
- 41:48Speaker 5: And so, but the way that, Baz Luhrmann tells this
- 41:52Speaker 5: story and just the technical craft that is on display
- 41:57Speaker 5: and having seen like, you know, two years of like
- 42:01Speaker 5: streaming television shows, which are kind of look like movies,
- 42:04Speaker 5: but they, you know, they're always kind of, but this
- 42:07Speaker 5: felt like.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Sometimes they don't put the extra effort in.
- 42:09Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 42:10Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, the cameras are good and so
- 42:12Speaker 5: everything looks good, but this felt like, going out to
- 42:16Speaker 5: like a really expensive restaurant and really having somebody who
- 42:21Speaker 5: knows how to cook and prepare and give you like
- 42:23Speaker 5: a five course meal, you know, versus like shoving down
- 42:26Speaker 5: a cheeseburger. And it felt so cinematic and so big
- 42:30Speaker 5: and so broad and beautiful to behold that, you know,
- 42:35Speaker 5: you're just like going like, man, this is like, I
- 42:37Speaker 5: think this is his best movie, you.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Know, five courses of Elvis.
- 42:42Speaker 5: Five courses of Elvis. Right.
- 42:43Speaker 10: Right.
- 42:44Speaker 5: And it just takes you through the whole thing. I mean, it's,
- 42:46Speaker 5: it's like a biopic. So, you know, you kind of
- 42:48Speaker 5: know the beats of how it's going to go, you know,
- 42:51Speaker 5: but it was respectful. It wasn't exploitative towards them or anything,
- 42:55Speaker 5: you know? Uh, Which might have been fun, too.
- 42:59Speaker 1: But especially when you have almost a villain built into
- 43:01Speaker 1: the story. I mean, yeah, the colonel abused him. You know, yeah, yeah.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Was so isolated from the world by the time he
- 43:09Speaker 1: got to be the old crazy man.
- 43:10Speaker 2: And he didn't get to be that old.
- 43:12Speaker 5: But like now.
- 43:13Speaker 1: As the elder version of Elvis, like he was so
- 43:16Speaker 1: disconnected from everybody. He was on so many drugs for
- 43:20Speaker 1: different reasons. And like the Colonel was just milking him
- 43:23Speaker 1: for everything.
- 43:24Speaker 5: Oh, everything.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Like, yeah. I mean, it has like, you almost have
- 43:29Speaker 1: to be like sympathetic towards this guy. It's like, even
- 43:31Speaker 1: though he had everything in the world, he had his
- 43:33Speaker 1: own pet monkey for God's sakes, but.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Like to bring it back around.
- 43:37Speaker 1: But at the same time, like he, it's that perfect
- 43:40Speaker 1: example of like, even if you have all the money
- 43:42Speaker 1: in the world, it doesn't mean you're happy. it doesn't
- 43:44Speaker 1: mean things are going your way. Like it means things
- 43:48Speaker 1: have worked out financially for you and you've maybe been
- 43:51Speaker 1: successful in a specific field, but it doesn't mean you're
- 43:54Speaker 1: not miserable. Right.
- 43:56Speaker 9: Right.
- 43:56Speaker 5: That's what it really kind of shows. It just sort
- 43:58Speaker 5: of shows like this kid was like, you know, something special.
- 44:04Speaker 5: And he just became such an industry that no, and I,
- 44:09Speaker 5: I really, it just shows you like, you know, if
- 44:11Speaker 5: you have, if you were surrounded by, that much love
- 44:16Speaker 5: and adoration, how it, it, people aren't equipped to deal
- 44:20Speaker 5: with that, you know, um, that, that, that much.
- 44:24Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 44:25Speaker 1: I have a tie in other movie that I've seen
- 44:28Speaker 1: recently that, that pairs with that perfectly. But before we leave, I,
- 44:32Speaker 1: I assumed you'd be like, well, this isn't, this isn't
- 44:34Speaker 1: Kurt Russell. I mean, the fact that you had Carpenter
- 44:38Speaker 1: doing an Elvis movie, I figured this would have to
- 44:40Speaker 1: pale in comparison.
- 44:41Speaker 5: Well, you know, it's, it's Carpenter TV work. You know, he, he, he,
- 44:46Speaker 5: he said, he's, he says himself, you know, it's TV.
- 44:48Speaker 5: I don't care. So, you know, it's, you know, for
- 44:51Speaker 5: those masters of horror ones, he did, he was just like,
- 44:53Speaker 5: it's TV. It's Toronto.
- 44:55Speaker 4: What am I going to do?
- 44:55Speaker 1: You know, but in listening to you discuss that and,
- 45:00Speaker 1: and even the description I just gave, it totally reminded me.
- 45:03Speaker 2: I have you watched blonde?
- 45:06Speaker 5: Blonde.
- 45:07Speaker 1: The Marilyn Monroe.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Movie that just came.
- 45:09Speaker 5: Out a couple months ago. I like, Oh, on Netflix.
- 45:12Speaker 10: Right.
- 45:13Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
- 45:13Speaker 5: Yeah. Okay.
- 45:14Speaker 1: I love that actress, but that's, that's the takeaways. I mean,
- 45:19Speaker 1: I've loved her and everything, but like, she is phenomenal.
- 45:23Speaker 1: Like she, because she doesn't look anything like her and
- 45:26Speaker 1: suddenly you throw her into this and like, yeah, I mean,
- 45:29Speaker 1: she looks a little closer to the Norman Jean version,
- 45:31Speaker 1: I guess. But then when you get her in the
- 45:33Speaker 1: blonde hair and you give her like this chance to
- 45:36Speaker 1: pull it off, like she nails it. Like she is amazing.
- 45:40Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 45:41Speaker 5: But I, yeah, I want, yeah, go for it. Weird, weird. Yeah, dude,
- 45:46Speaker 5: that's what I got out of it. I probably watched
- 45:47Speaker 5: about 10 minutes of it. All right. And it was
- 45:50Speaker 5: like in the middle and I was going like, I
- 45:53Speaker 5: was going like, wow, she's like naked a lot.
- 45:56Speaker 1: And, uh, you know, I mean, on the one hand
- 45:59Speaker 1: she's gorgeous, so I'm not complaining, but I'm also like,
- 46:03Speaker 1: is this necessary all the time? Like, and that's bad.
- 46:06Speaker 1: If I'm like, it's okay. You don't have to be
- 46:09Speaker 1: naked all the time. Like that's, It's weird, but sometimes
- 46:13Speaker 1: it seems exploitative from that angle.
- 46:16Speaker 5: Yeah, but it's so arty that it's not exploitive. I mean,
- 46:20Speaker 5: it is arty in weird ways.
- 46:26Speaker 1: If anybody hasn't seen it, to me, this was the description.
- 46:29Speaker 1: I was like, okay, I'm going to have to use
- 46:30Speaker 1: this to put it in perspective for normal people out there.
- 46:34Speaker 1: There's a lot more shots from inside maryland than.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I was expecting in a.
- 46:39Speaker 5: Movie yeah i think i remember seeing a the fetus and.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Uh and not just that like there's a lot of
- 46:48Speaker 1: that that goes on and i'm just like i don't
- 46:52Speaker 1: know that i'm comfortable being inside this woman all this
- 46:55Speaker 1: much this is a lot of time coming in and
- 46:57Speaker 1: out of anyway yeah Yeah. So yeah, that's the part
- 47:02Speaker 1: I was like, they're going for something really already here.
- 47:06Speaker 1: And I'm not saying they're not hitting it, but I
- 47:09Speaker 1: think my takeaway, and this was what made me think
- 47:11Speaker 1: of it with the Elvis stuff is like, she had
- 47:15Speaker 1: all of the success.
- 47:16Speaker 2: I mean, you can't be a bigger pop icon than Elvis.
- 47:19Speaker 1: And Marilyn, but watching that movie, if you're believing the
- 47:23Speaker 1: perspective of this movie, there was not a moment of
- 47:27Speaker 1: her life that she wasn't miserable.
- 47:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 47:30Speaker 1: Right. I mean, she deals with so much in the
- 47:34Speaker 1: beginning that, that is, you know, based in reality. Like
- 47:37Speaker 1: most of her upbringing was probably pretty sad. And then
- 47:40Speaker 1: she achieves these great heights. But according to this movie,
- 47:43Speaker 1: like it does not matter because she never escapes these horrible,
- 47:48Speaker 1: you know, issues that plague her since childhood and, And
- 47:51Speaker 1: everybody was basically just using her along the way. And like,
- 47:55Speaker 1: she can never even, you know, people she's in love
- 47:58Speaker 1: with people she's married to, like.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Just kind of screw her over and abuse her.
- 48:02Speaker 1: And like, there's just no upside to it. And I'm like,
- 48:06Speaker 1: as someone who likes Marilyn in, in her movies, the
- 48:09Speaker 1: real version, I'm like, this isn't fun. Like, I understand
- 48:12Speaker 1: you're trying to tell the darker side, but I'm like,
- 48:15Speaker 1: after a while, it's, it's not something you want to,
- 48:19Speaker 1: undertake anymore like it's just again it's just a shame
- 48:23Speaker 1: because the performance is so good but yeah yeah by
- 48:27Speaker 1: the end I'm just like this is miserable like I
- 48:29Speaker 1: just yeah I feel bad for her as a person
- 48:32Speaker 1: as a character whoever like I know a lot of
- 48:35Speaker 1: it is not based in fact again they were going
- 48:37Speaker 1: more art house and trying to tell the overall story
- 48:42Speaker 1: not so much the details of the story because there's
- 48:44Speaker 1: like one of the people that like she's involved with
- 48:47Speaker 1: quite a bit in some portions of this movie like
- 48:50Speaker 1: they show him after she dies or no there's a
- 48:54Speaker 1: point in the there's a point in the movie where
- 48:56Speaker 1: he dies and like it's brought to her attention so
- 48:59Speaker 1: i looked it up and he lived longer than she
- 49:00Speaker 1: did like they're putting they're killing a character off that
- 49:03Speaker 1: didn't really happen in the real world so it's like
- 49:05Speaker 1: that kind of stuff of like they're not worried about
- 49:08Speaker 1: details in this movie they're they're way more leaning into
- 49:11Speaker 1: the crazy overall like mental state that she was in
- 49:15Speaker 1: which by the way was not good.
- 49:17Speaker 12: Right fyi spoiler not good and and it's damn near
- 49:24Speaker 12: three hours long so it is an undertaking on so
- 49:28Speaker 12: many levels so.
- 49:29Speaker 5: Well you know that was probably uh you know hit
- 49:33Speaker 5: one was, you know, just, Oh yeah. The new Maryland
- 49:36Speaker 5: movie I've been hearing about. Oh, three hours.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Okay.
- 49:38Speaker 5: That's an investment. I got to like clear the afternoon.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:41Speaker 5: And then, uh, my wife started watching it. And so
- 49:44Speaker 5: I just kind of like walked in on it and
- 49:46Speaker 5: it was, it was just so depressing, you know, that
- 49:50Speaker 5: I was.
- 49:50Speaker 1: Just like, the more you watch it, I'll tell you.
- 49:53Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:54Speaker 5: I was going like, Oh, that's sad that she had
- 49:55Speaker 5: to get an abortion as weird that she was in
- 49:57Speaker 5: a throuple. And, uh, but it was also just so sad.
- 50:01Speaker 5: It's so sad. I don't think I want to watch it.
- 50:03Speaker 1: You know what I mean? All of these things. And
- 50:05Speaker 1: it's all like perspective. Cause it's like these things that
- 50:07Speaker 1: have happened to her along the way, like could just
- 50:10Speaker 1: be normal, but like somehow, uh, there's so much more
- 50:14Speaker 1: like tragic and horrible in this version that we're watching
- 50:17Speaker 1: that I'm just like, cause I mean, people, you know,
- 50:19Speaker 1: survive stuff and get over things and like, but somehow
- 50:23Speaker 1: in this, like there's just never an up day. Like
- 50:26Speaker 1: every day is just terrible and new, terrible things waiting
- 50:30Speaker 1: to happen tomorrow.
- 50:31Speaker 5: And it's like, geez, it's just grueling. bleak viewpoint you
- 50:36Speaker 5: know and everything and I'm sure it was no bed
- 50:38Speaker 5: of roses to be uh Marilyn Monroe but you know
- 50:41Speaker 5: there must have been like uh you know uh breakfast
- 50:45Speaker 5: on a seaside villa in Tuscany at some point in
- 50:47Speaker 5: there where she was going like this is great French
- 50:50Speaker 5: toast have a few minutes of peace but no not
- 50:53Speaker 5: on that movie yeah which makes it just kind of
- 50:57Speaker 5: make you so is it you would think like what
- 51:01Speaker 5: if like John Waters had directed it and just really
- 51:03Speaker 5: leaned in on the, you know, the, the terrible people
- 51:07Speaker 5: treating her terribly, you know, it.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Kind of feels like that.
- 51:12Speaker 1: It's a different direction of Artie than John Waters, but right.
- 51:16Speaker 1: And of course the vine would have been Maryland. Oh yeah.
- 51:19Speaker 5: Can you imagine how great that movie would have been?
- 51:22Speaker 1: I mean, we kind of get a version of that
- 51:24Speaker 1: a few times in divine's life. Right. Right. I would, yeah,
- 51:28Speaker 1: I would definitely watch that now. I guess if they're
- 51:30Speaker 1: going to like, CG motion capture a new version of
- 51:33Speaker 1: divine and put him in the Maryland store.
- 51:36Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Yeah. We're not far from that. So that could be
- 51:39Speaker 1: happening soon. Maybe that will bring John out of retirement. Yeah.
- 51:45Speaker 5: Well, the rumor is, you know, he's going to make
- 51:47Speaker 5: another one, but you know, who knows, you know, what's
- 51:50Speaker 5: going on. So, but we'll, we'll see, you know, he
- 51:53Speaker 5: doesn't have to, he's got his legacy. So if he
- 51:57Speaker 5: does it, you know, hopefully it will be, you know,
- 52:00Speaker 5: cause something he really wants to do, but you know,
- 52:04Speaker 5: but looping back to something, we're talking about Tom Matthews earlier. Yeah.
- 52:12Speaker 5: So in closing on the Maryland movie, probably not going
- 52:15Speaker 5: to watch it until I've like had my Prozac and
- 52:19Speaker 5: you know.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Don't, don't expect to be happy after you sit down
- 52:23Speaker 1: for a viewing.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Cause it takes its toll.
- 52:26Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
- 52:27Speaker 5: So Tom Matthews is in one of my favorite early
- 52:33Speaker 5: 90s cyberpunk movies called Nemesis. And Nemesis was directed by
- 52:38Speaker 5: your good friend Albert Poon. And so he's been all
- 52:45Speaker 5: in the news. So I don't know if he's... I
- 52:48Speaker 5: don't think he's dead yet, but I mean, that's not
- 52:53Speaker 5: a fun way to phrase it.
- 52:54Speaker 3: I know.
- 52:54Speaker 5: I know.
- 52:55Speaker 2: He's not doing well.
- 52:57Speaker 1: So yeah. Yeah.
- 52:59Speaker 5: So it's, it's, it's interesting though, seeing the outpour of
- 53:03Speaker 5: love for Alvin, who you would, you know, another guy
- 53:06Speaker 5: who probably, you know, doesn't, didn't realize how much people
- 53:11Speaker 5: like his movies from that time period, you know, and, uh,
- 53:15Speaker 5: this says, you know, I mean.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Yeah, you sent me that link. And then I was like,
- 53:19Speaker 1: his wife was basically like, Hey, if you have nice
- 53:21Speaker 1: things to say to him, like he's, he's not doing well.
- 53:24Speaker 1: So now's the time to, you know, I'll make sure
- 53:26Speaker 1: he sees all this. So I did put it on
- 53:28Speaker 1: there because I had that crossover with him and like it,
- 53:33Speaker 1: it was like amazing because he was as much as
- 53:36Speaker 1: you've heard about him too, like, because he's not only
- 53:39Speaker 1: a man who's made a ton of movies and made
- 53:42Speaker 1: a bunch of movies that, you know, were super low
- 53:44Speaker 1: budget and probably had some sort of crazy scenarios, but
- 53:47Speaker 1: also has been asked to leave a lot of movies.
- 53:50Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 53:51Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 53:52Speaker 1: As you get into a story, there are several in
- 53:54Speaker 1: the run that they're like, okay, we're done with you now.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Bring in another director.
- 53:59Speaker 5: Oh, wow. Is he just eccentric or is he?
- 54:03Speaker 1: I was expecting it to be like, you know, he
- 54:05Speaker 1: would be kind of a curmudgeon or like kind of
- 54:08Speaker 1: like difficult to even talk to. He was so nice
- 54:13Speaker 1: and so laid back. And so I had the most
- 54:16Speaker 1: fascinating story of like, here's this, here's this guy who's like,
- 54:20Speaker 1: growing up away from Hollywood, as far as you can
- 54:23Speaker 1: get like so much. So I remember him talking about
- 54:26Speaker 1: like wanting to make film, but they didn't have a
- 54:29Speaker 1: place living on an Island. He's essentially in Hawaii, I believe.
- 54:33Speaker 1: And like, yeah, they didn't have a place to develop
- 54:35Speaker 1: film there. So like if you shot a film, you
- 54:39Speaker 1: had to ship it off to the mainland to have
- 54:42Speaker 1: someone develop your film and then wait for it to
- 54:44Speaker 1: come back. And I'm like, this is amazing that this
- 54:47Speaker 1: guy in this scenario grows up, you know, put together
- 54:51Speaker 1: all these movies. I'm like, you're already dealing with this crazy,
- 54:54Speaker 1: like super removed from Hollywood kind of a story. And
- 54:57Speaker 1: then like you get into like, okay, he's made all
- 55:00Speaker 1: these like silly straight to video kind of movies you
- 55:03Speaker 1: know yeah like the man who directed cyborg you know
- 55:06Speaker 1: oh yeah so like that guy what you know what's
- 55:10Speaker 1: the what's the movie that brought him in what's the
- 55:12Speaker 1: movie you know what kind of schlocky nonsense did he
- 55:14Speaker 1: get into as a kid yeah 2001 was his like
- 55:20Speaker 1: defining moment when he was yeah this is it this
- 55:23Speaker 1: is so like that is amazing like that's what i
- 55:26Speaker 1: was like I want to hear more about this. Like,
- 55:29Speaker 1: I wish I could have talked to him even longer.
- 55:31Speaker 1: Like he was in the middle of doing a bunch
- 55:32Speaker 1: of stuff. So it got kind of cut a little
- 55:35Speaker 1: shorter than I would have liked. Cause I wanted to
- 55:37Speaker 1: hear him go on more about 2001. Like, but that's,
- 55:40Speaker 1: that's the kind of stuff that I'm just like you,
- 55:42Speaker 1: you number one, I'm just, when I meet people that
- 55:45Speaker 1: are awesome, it makes it even better because I've run.
- 55:48Speaker 2: Into some that haven't been as great.
- 55:50Speaker 1: And so it's like, when I see somebody that's super
- 55:54Speaker 1: nice and very down to earth, That's amazing. Especially then
- 55:58Speaker 1: I'm like, well, what was going on on these shoots
- 56:00Speaker 1: that like you, who seems to be the nicest person
- 56:03Speaker 1: and like super easy to get along with here is
- 56:06Speaker 1: getting kicked off of a project. So I don't know
- 56:09Speaker 1: if he just switches into a totally different mode when
- 56:11Speaker 1: he's on set or what, but yeah, my run in
- 56:15Speaker 1: was really great.
- 56:16Speaker 2: He was a very nice man.
- 56:18Speaker 5: Well, you know, that happened a lot to Toby Hooper too.
- 56:20Speaker 5: He got fired off as many projects as he directed.
- 56:23Speaker 5: You know, and, you know, he's he I think there
- 56:29Speaker 5: is just a certain expectation for a way a director
- 56:33Speaker 5: is supposed to be. And I think some of these
- 56:35Speaker 5: people came out of, you know, homegrown, homemade filmmaking like Hooper.
- 56:42Speaker 5: And I think like maybe not. punes kind of thing
- 56:47Speaker 5: but i mean i'm sure one of those low budget
- 56:49Speaker 5: ones probably had our hard scrabble kind of thing and
- 56:52Speaker 5: they learn a certain way of doing things that isn't
- 56:55Speaker 5: always conductive to the way hollywood does things and and
- 56:59Speaker 5: so they're either they adapt or they don't you know again.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Back to the john waters thing like he did.
- 57:05Speaker 1: Everything in the beginning by his own rules because there
- 57:09Speaker 1: weren't any sometimes and like he pieced it together after
- 57:12Speaker 1: the fact and made what he wanted to make And
- 57:14Speaker 1: then when you get to the structure of, okay, now
- 57:17Speaker 1: you're going to go shoot hairspray, you know, it's like
- 57:20Speaker 1: the more and more he did, the bigger the production
- 57:23Speaker 1: and the more and more studio involvement he got to
- 57:26Speaker 1: the point. He's like, I don't even want to do
- 57:27Speaker 1: this anymore. So same thing, like the more backing you get,
- 57:33Speaker 1: the more it might seem like you're getting successful. The
- 57:36Speaker 1: less of you is going into the project and you
- 57:39Speaker 1: probably don't want to do this. If you're a real
- 57:41Speaker 1: artistic kind of a person.
- 57:42Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 57:43Speaker 5: That's right. That's right. If you're used to making movies
- 57:45Speaker 5: with your buddies in Pittsburgh and now you're, you know,
- 57:48Speaker 5: basically reduced to a, you know, director for hire and
- 57:53Speaker 5: every cool idea you have, or that, that the crew has,
- 57:57Speaker 5: you have to pass it through a studio before you
- 57:59Speaker 5: can do it. It was probably takes the wind out
- 58:01Speaker 5: of yourselves a bit, you know?
- 58:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:05Speaker 5: And I probably probably had, you know, some of those
- 58:08Speaker 5: movies that he was on were probably like solo budget movies. that,
- 58:12Speaker 5: you know, they probably gave him like five days to shoot,
- 58:14Speaker 5: you know, shoot it, you know, and if he falls
- 58:17Speaker 5: behind because there's like some ridiculous special effect in it
- 58:20Speaker 5: that he has to pull off, you know, they, they
- 58:22Speaker 5: have to like, you know, fire him and get somebody
- 58:24Speaker 5: who doesn't care as much.
- 58:27Speaker 1: So, I mean, a lot of those early ones are like, yeah, really?
- 58:31Speaker 1: That was like, sometimes I, he, again, he did so many,
- 58:34Speaker 1: I didn't even realize it. Like one of the ones
- 58:36Speaker 1: I'm just running across buying things in the real world still.
- 58:40Speaker 1: I ran across a super deluxe version of alien from LA.
- 58:43Speaker 5: Oh, right.
- 58:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 58:45Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 58:46Speaker 5: I've not seen that.
- 58:48Speaker 1: One of his like, and then watch it. I'm like,
- 58:50Speaker 1: it's super ambitious.
- 58:53Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 58:53Speaker 1: We're also having, I'm assuming very little money. So like,
- 58:57Speaker 1: he's trying to create this entire other universe almost on,
- 59:01Speaker 1: you know, super minimal indie film budget of just like, again,
- 59:07Speaker 1: it's got to give points for just the audacity of
- 59:09Speaker 1: being able to do that kind of stuff or even
- 59:11Speaker 1: undertaking something like that.
- 59:14Speaker 5: That's right. That's right. Yeah. I watched one the other
- 59:16Speaker 5: day called a radioactive dreams that he did.
- 59:20Speaker 1: I remember even just watching like the trailer, it's kind
- 59:24Speaker 1: of that same thing of like, let's create an entirely
- 59:26Speaker 1: different universe in a whole nother world.
- 59:29Speaker 5: And yeah.
- 59:30Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 59:31Speaker 5: And, and so, yeah, it's super ambitious, but you know,
- 59:34Speaker 5: after they built the sets and they built, you know,
- 59:36Speaker 5: put the established the, the costumes and everything, they just
- 59:40Speaker 5: didn't have any money to do anything. You know, it's
- 59:43Speaker 5: just like, it's all set up and it's like, okay, well,
- 59:46Speaker 5: we barely got enough money left over for film for
- 59:48Speaker 5: the camera. So, you know, it's like, I mean, I
- 59:51Speaker 5: can see that.
- 59:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:52Speaker 1: Watching it from LA. There's, there's a lot of, creating
- 59:55Speaker 1: this universe and then once you get there it's like
- 59:57Speaker 1: she just kind of walks around in it a lot
- 59:59Speaker 1: and like he's sort of looking for somebody and yeah
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: it's so surprising that yeah we can't really have i
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: think tom matthews shows up in there too yeah i
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: think oh yeah i remember asking him like i was
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: like you turn up in a lot of these movies
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: i think he just again like somebody who got along
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: with him really well so it's like i don't understand
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: how one thing is true as is the other, like
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: he's so difficult to work with. He gets kicked off
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: all these movies, but yet you've got these people that
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: adore him and want to keep working with him. So, yeah.
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: Well, you put them, you put a guy, you put
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: a guy, you put a nice guy and you push
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: him too far. He's going to bite you. You know
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: what I mean? You put them, you back them into
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: the corner, you know, he's, you come out swinging and
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: you just, you can't, you know, that's just not what
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: you're supposed to do. You're supposed to, the friends I
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: know that, you know, uh, work for the industry is basically,
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: you know, you just got to learn how to take it.
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: You got to take the abuse.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Do what they tell you. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: So, but, uh, yeah, so it's, it's sad. It's sad
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: about Kuhn, but man, he made like, you know, uh,
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: 520 movies, you know, and, you know, 10 of them
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: are really great, you know?
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: So, you know, it's like, you gotta keep at it.
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: You gotta keep at it, you know? And, uh, you know,
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: but his, uh, I mean, you know, uh, for me,
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: you know, cyborg is just a great movie and, you know,
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: there's people who probably will argue that, but I mean,
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: it's just got such that great, you know, late eighties,
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: early nineties, kind of like post-apocalyptic, you know, uh, flaming
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: trash barrels and, and, uh, and, uh, chicken wire on
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: everything kind of look to it.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: That's my world. I'm usually looking for that in any movie.
- 1:01:42Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: It's, it's just, it's so great. And just the, uh,
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: you know, it's just like so rough and tumble, uh,
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: filmmaking that, that I really enjoy that one. And, and
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: nemesis is just like, so, uh, so pre matrix, but
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: you know, we've got long trench coats and, uh, you know,
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: I guess it's John Woo inspired at that point, you know, and, uh,
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: and Terminator, you know, inspired and it's got the great
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: Tim Thomerson, uh, Byron James, uh, duo in it.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: So, you know, enjoy some Tim Thomerson.
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: Absolutely. Absolutely. So, Yeah.
- 1:02:18Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: He's great. He's great.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: But yeah, anyway.
- 1:02:22Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: So what, what, what else have you seen lately? Oh
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: my gosh.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Well, then there was again, I think it's interesting. The
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: ones that do come up along the way, because I
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: just happened to have just watched this and you mentioned
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: him earlier. So this is another one of those I've
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: known about the movie since the mid eighties. And yeah,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I wanted to see it, never got around to it
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: and was only prompted to, because I ran across a
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: copy of it. It was like, here it is for
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: cheap on DVD. And I'm like, Oh, this is a good,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: that's why I like it. Like there's tons of stuff streaming,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: but I'll just never get around to it because everything's available.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: But somehow like finding a copy of it, I'm like, Oh,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: this is the reason for me to watch this. So
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: I picked up a copy of, I want to hold
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: your hand, which is the first feature.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: Film of Robert Zemeckis.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: What so what i knew of this i'd heard about
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: it forever and being like again now it's like when
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: you reference him you're usually doing it for backhanded purposes
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: yes the thing that he is now is a very
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: different director but that early to early 80s through the
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: like early 90s like he was like this amazing filmmaker
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: that was taking on these different types of projects and
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: also like setting the bar and like one of the
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: first people to ever shoot movies back to back. And like,
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: just like doing these crazy things that like, until he
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: hit his weird, like CG virtual world. And then we
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: lost him to that for a decade or so. Oh
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: my God. But before that, like he was just putting
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: together these amazing movies. Now, granted, he was one of
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: those that found a way to work within the system.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: And like, as you said, you know, before, what are
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: you talking about? Like he went, to school he followed
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: in the footsteps of spielberg and like he just modeled
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: things to the how do i get to be able
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: to make these movies i want to make in the
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: biggest you know studios into the biggest audience and like
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: he found a way to do it yeah but before
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: that like this is the very first step on that
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: path this is 1978 1978 And it is, which is
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: also weird to me because I thought it is more
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: of like an eighties thing looking back on the sixties,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: but 78, like, it's funny that like, it's.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: It's about the Beatles.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: So it's not that long before when all of this
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: was actually happening.
- 1:04:47Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: Because the bulk of the movie is like them showing
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: up in America to play Ed Sullivan. Like that is
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: the entire thing that is built around. And these goofy
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: kids from like New Jersey are, that drive into the
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: theater and want to like be there to see them.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: And it's, it's an interesting like movie anyway. It's a
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: very like of its time, kind of like kids getting
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: into wacky adventures kind of story. Yeah. But also like
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: the cast is interesting specifically if you know Zemeckis, I
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: mean the main person, our biggest star to come out
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: of it is Nancy Allen. There's a 1978 Nancy Allen
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: in there. So she's one of our main girls. But
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: the other one that's like super crazy Beatles fan is
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Wendy Jo Sperber, who I feel is a national treasure
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: and like was just never fully appreciated in her life.
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: All right, well, here's your chance to talk about Wendy
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: Jo Sperber because I don't know who that is.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: And if you're a Zemeckis fan, she is known because
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: she is Linda McFly.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: She is Marty's sister.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: In what little screen.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: Time she has, Yeah.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: She's the, she's the one sitting at the table at
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: the beginning.
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: Like, right.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: So that's the sister.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: If you watch her, she is so much fun. And like, she.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Wasn't just in this. If you go back and look
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: at her on DB, she's in a ton of stuff.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Like she is a staple of eighties comedies. Like she
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: is in a ton of stuff. And then like continued
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: working through the nineties and into the early 2000s. She's
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: still consistently working.
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: And then dies of cancer.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: And like, so like just never, like, I feel like
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: at some point there would have been like a resurgence
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: and people would have really like, you know, appreciated her
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: and she would have, you know, I don't know. It
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: just seems like it's sad that like everything she's known
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: of is like 1985. Yeah.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: And then, and now she's gone.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Like it's sad. Yeah.
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: Cause she worked, she worked so much. So Linda from
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: back to the future is in, or the sister is in,
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: I want to hold your hand.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: She's Rosie and I want to hold your hand.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: And she is like the super over the top, crazy
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: Beatles fan. Like she is the one that like wants
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: to marry Paul. Like she's one of those insane girls
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: that you'll see screaming in every video. Well, this is like,
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: let's spend, you know, like a whole day before this
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: happens and, you know, find out who these girls are.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: And like some of them, like at one point, the
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: Nancy Allen characters doesn't seem like she's all that in tune.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: She's just like, oh, I've got to get my life
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: together and I'm going to get married and I'm going
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: to be, you know, But then like once she gets
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: into the situation, she's like insanely into.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: The Beatles all of a sudden.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: It's very weird. And then there's another friend that like
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: doesn't like the Beatles and is trying to protest them
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: because she likes like, you know, hippie folk music.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: So like the Beatles running them. So it's interesting.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: The other tie in that I think is funny, the
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: other guy, there's like also guys, there's like the guy
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: that drives in there that is the one that has
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: a car basically.
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: So they sucker him into going.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: But he is Larry, who is played by Mark McClure,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: who you would also know as Dave McFly. So Marty's brother,
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: who was also Jimmy Olsen in the Superman movies, is
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: the other guy that drives them to New York. So yeah,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: it's like this tie-in of all the Zemeckis regulars that
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: are there in that first movie, and then you continue
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: to see them pop up in his stuff in the future.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: But yeah, so he's in there as like the the
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: guy in the car. And like he also is like
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: into one of these other girls, but doesn't know how
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: to tell her. And like, so it's it's kind of
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: like romance stuff, but, you know, still kind of laid
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: for laughs.
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: But I mean, is this like I'm getting like from
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: your description, is it is it like kind of like
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: like American graffiti genre or.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: Like it is just goofy kids getting into adventures and
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: like they're all trying to the one girl like is
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: basically the she doesn't even seem like she's that into
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: the Beatles but it's interesting that there's a girl at
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: this era that's like super obsessed with her career because
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: she's a photographer And like she wants like this is
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: going to break it. If I can get a shot
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: of the Beatles, like I'll be on Life magazine. So
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: it's interesting that like that's her whole push is like
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: just for like professional reasons almost. yeah but um she
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: she concocts this plan to get them into the hotel
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: where they're staying so they drive all the way up
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: to new york just to make this plan happen and
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: then they all get like separated and get into separate
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: crazy adventures and there's this one trying to do that
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: and this one's trying to get over here and they're
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: all still trying to make it to the the ed
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: sullivan show for the big performance so Yeah. It's a
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: crazy adventure for, for again, like sort of low stakes
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: and yet somehow they turn it into this huge epic adventure,
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: but yeah, it's, it's a lot of fun. It's, it's,
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: it's kind of what I expected, but still it's, it's
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: pretty polished for being a, you know, the earliest movie for,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: for an up and coming filmmaker. Like, it's still pretty
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: well put together as as a you know again he
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: he got to where he was like almost clockwork of
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: being able to put together he's great i mean you
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: fast forward like as much as everybody goes on and
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: on about back to the future the thing that i
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: think is amazing is like that screenplay and that's what's
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: interesting about this it's also it's directed by zemeckis it's
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: written by robert zemeckis and bob gale okay so that
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: gave us back to the future so like it is
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: that same dynamic, but you see, by the time you
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: get to back to the future, like that screenplay is
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: so perfectly set up. Like everything in it comes back
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: into play. Every, there is not a wasted moment in
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: that screenplay. Everything is so meticulously put together.
- 1:10:36Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: Then I'm like, it's, it's to me, it's amazing. Like
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: as much as I still love the movie, I know
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: lots of people now it's become cool to kind of
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: bash on it, but I'm like, you can think whatever
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: you want of it, but you have to give credit
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: to like that. perfectly put together screenplay and so again
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: it's interesting to see these two guys that work together
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: for so much of their careers like this is that
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: early incarnation of them and it's still kind of that
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: same dynamic it's still sort of got that that sort
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: of fun but kind of crazy adventure aspect even in
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: this which again is very grounded compared to time travel
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: but it's still that same sort of dynamic of setting
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: up these crazy situations that they get in and how
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: do we get them out of it or take it
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: to the next level sometimes.
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: But that also shows you what clout he had like
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: coming out of the film school, you know, is just
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: like he was able to work with these actors and,
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: you know, make a period piece for a studio.
- 1:11:29Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: You know, based on and, you know, that they greenlit.
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: It's I just from your description, I'm going like American
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: graffiti made a lot of money. So I think there
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: must have been like a nostalgic comedy genre based on music.
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: you know, just from your description and everything. So I'm
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: going like that, you know, there, but the fact that
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: he got his, his, his first up at bat for
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: doing something like that, which sounds like a lot of
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: plot threads going on, you know, it just shows the
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: trust they had in him. I don't think he made
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: any money until used cars came around, you know, but yeah.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: Cause that's the thing that run after that. Like I
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: love used cars as a kid, which.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: Says a lot about me.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: But even like something like romancing the stone, like it's
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: taken up to such a big scope to this again,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: crazy adventure story and fish on the water kind of thing,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: but just taking it to a huge canvas, basically that, yeah, again,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: that run of his movies and like, roger rabbit like
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: it's just like so many impressive things in that era
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: that i'm like i i will go back to him
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: as like a go-to filmmaker for that era now you
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: move forward he's a different guy but.
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: Yeah yeah yeah it's uh yeah no back to the
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: future you know what can be said i mean it
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: if i can show one of my you know zoomer
- 1:12:48Speaker 5: kids you know a movie from you know 40 years
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: ago and they respond to it i mean that that
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: means something you know because I showed one of my
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: teenagers Back to the Future. And it was probably five,
- 1:13:03Speaker 5: six years ago. They were probably 11 or 12. And
- 1:13:06Speaker 5: they ate it up. And that same thing happened recently
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: with Jaws. And they sat and watched the whole thing
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: and loved it. So, I mean, there's just a certain
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: level of filmmaking going on there. And storytelling that they've
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: got to.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: There's a hook.
- 1:13:26Speaker 5: You know, and they get hooked in it. And and and,
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: you know, it's, you know, Zemeckis during that time period,
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: you know, just from a technical point of view. I mean,
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: he just was like, you know, unparalleled, you know.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: And again, showing how much they like, I guess. gave
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: you the basics in film school. Cause like right out
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: of the gate, this is pretty solid. But again, like
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: compared to looking back at the other people we've referenced,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: like look at the early movies of John Waters.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: It's not polished. I think even he'll tell you it
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: wasn't polished.
- 1:14:01Speaker 9: Right. Right.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: They didn't have all the, the kinks worked out of
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: it yet.
- 1:14:06Speaker 9: Not at all.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: You know, this is like a really interesting thing to see,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: you know, Bob Gale and he working together and like
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: putting together this this project like that early on in
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: that scene where it would lead down the line.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: It's pretty amazing.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: Right. Also, the clout of they got actual songs like, oh, like.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: There's like 11 or 12 of them in the soundtrack.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: Like that's the investment right there. Like regardless of how
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: much it costs to make this movie, they got legit
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: Beatles songs.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: And put them in this movie. Like that's the most
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: amazing thing.
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: Yeah, sure. So huge, you know, they threw a lot
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: of money at those guys first movie, you know, it
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: may not have been special effects spectacular, but I mean,
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: you know, it's not, it's not easy to replace all
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: those cars and costumes and, you know, and then to
- 1:14:55Speaker 5: get the rights to the music. I mean, that's, yeah,
- 1:14:57Speaker 5: that's pretty crazy.
- 1:14:58Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:14:59Speaker 10: Um, yeah.
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: Zemeckis, uh, uh, you know, just, uh, you know, his,
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: I would say, you know, there are parts of, uh,
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: Roger Rabbit and death becomes her that I just think
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: are just, I mean, I think that's maybe for me,
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: Bruce Willis's best moments.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: He has such amazing potential anyway, which we see later
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: in totally dramatic roles, but there's also something to be
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: able to play that type of comedy. And like, he
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: had that too, like from the beginning, like in his
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: TV days, you see his comedic timing is amazing, but like, Yeah.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: So yeah, to put him in that makeup and then.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: Like have him go through this crazy story and have
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: him be the one that you come back to. Cause
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: like the other two are all over the place, but like,
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: he's sort of holding down the fort as the comedy goes.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Like he's, he is amazing in that.
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: He's great.
- 1:15:52Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: Just having him play like a total loser, you know,
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: it's just such a great, I mean, something they just,
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: he just couldn't do later in life, you know, later
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: in his career or his career now where he's, you know, just,
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: you know, I guess making, um, you know, paying the bills,
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: you know?
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: So, uh, that was a weird thing as we all
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: uncovered it, but it finally made sense. Cause I've spent
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: 10 years going, what is he doing? Like watching these
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: movies because they had his name on it. And he's
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: like half in it sometimes. And even when he is there,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: it seems like he's phoning it in and, Now I realize,
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: Oh no, he really did not know what was going
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: on some of the time. Like sometimes they're feeding him
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: dialogue in an earpiece because he can't even remember. Like
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: it really is sad.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Like the more you learn about that.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: And I mean, so yeah.
- 1:16:41Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: Just don't, Yeah.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: No need.
- 1:16:43Speaker 5: Now we understand. So, you know, no need to kick
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: as well as anymore.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: It at least gets rid of the mystery. So like,
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: I don't have to go back and watch those other ones.
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: That's right.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Cause I kept waiting for him to turn in another
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: like amazing performance that he hadn't done in like 10 years.
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: I'm like, what's up with that?
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: Like, why do we just turn this corner and everything now?
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: Like he just doesn't care anymore. I'm like, well, cause
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: he couldn't care anymore.
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: Basically.
- 1:17:08Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: It's, it's, it's just interesting, you know, but, But Zemeckis, yeah,
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: I totally agree. I mean, he made Flight, which was
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: fine because it was at least real people walking around.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: He's come back around to at least making real-world movies. Like,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: when we lost him to CG, like, those are just
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: in their own world. Like, I don't know if I've
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: sat down and watched any of those in their entirety.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: Like, they're just.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: no, they're just too much.
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: Like, it's just, I don't know.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: He was just so fascinated with that. Can I thing
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: that like, it didn't matter if the movie was good
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: by the end. He's just like, can I make this
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: work technically? Can I put all these pieces together and
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: come out with a movie? And yeah.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: Does anybody really want to return to him now?
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: Probably not. But I, I think that.
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: I think some of these directors, you know, these control directors,
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: you know, they're, it kind of derailed George Miller for
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: a while with those Happy Feet movies. But I think
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: George Miller took those lessons. He said what he learned
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: from those Happy Feet movies was there is, when I
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: can put the camera anywhere, I found out that there
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: is like the best place to put the camera because
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: i've tried it from all the angles.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: I feel like that's overwhelming like yeah i feel like
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: it's way more grounding to be able to be like
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: okay i've got these five places i can put it
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: which is gonna look best here all right i'm going
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: with this versus i can put it anywhere right huh where.
- 1:18:31Speaker 11: Do i where do i go i feel like that
- 1:18:34Speaker 11: would just kill your Your momentum of getting anything done
- 1:18:38Speaker 11: because you just sit around thinking about everything you can do.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: Versus, again, real world.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: I got to fix this.
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: I got to be out of this mall by six o'clock.
- 1:18:48Speaker 8: Exactly.
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: I got to finish this.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: Movie. I mean, yeah.
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: Go listen to the last episode.
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: Part one.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: Part one.
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. So I think that allure of total control,
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: you know, just kind of like ruins some directors.
- 1:19:04Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: I mean, I can see it being a cool selling
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: point in the early days. And you see him start
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: toying with it along the way.
- 1:19:10Speaker 8: Like he.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: You do. That's the other thing I'll give him credit
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: for is like, he is one of the main reasons
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: we got tales from the crypts, which at the time,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: I think that first couple.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: Of seasons is like solid as like, you.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: Know, fun over the top schlocky kind of horror stuff goes.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: Like I love those early seasons and like, he directed
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: several so like one of those is like you see
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: him playing with that like creating a fake person before
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: they can CG do that but like it's that early
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: one of him with Bogart and like it's trying to
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: it's done like POV style so it's one of those
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: first times you see him going okay can I make
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: this happen and And it's pretty minimal compared to what
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: he would end up doing later. But like you see
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: him like dipping his toe in, in TV format. And
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: then he's like, all right, let's throw a whole budget
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: towards Beowulf.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: Let's just immerse ourselves in this crazy process.
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: And like, can you do it?
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Do you need to keep doing it?
- 1:20:10Speaker 7: No.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: And even he decided that because now he's making human
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: movies again. So yeah.
- 1:20:17Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: Well, I mean, He actually, I found out he was
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: the director of the new Pinocchio remake.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I've heard that. I have not ventured that way yet.
- 1:20:28Speaker 5: No, no, no. Just Disney. Just this misguided remakes of
- 1:20:35Speaker 5: their old cartoons is just like.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: And that one didn't even get a theatrical run.
- 1:20:40Speaker 5: Oh, so bad. So sad. So sad. And I'm like,
- 1:20:45Speaker 5: why would you remake... I mean, I hear Del Toro's
- 1:20:48Speaker 5: coming out with a Pinocchio. I'll watch that one.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: That will at least.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: Be interesting because he will put a very different spin
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: on it, I'm sure. Right, right.
- 1:20:56Speaker 5: And I love Tom Hanks, and Tom Hanks' Geppetto may
- 1:20:59Speaker 5: be good, but why did they make the CG Pinocchio
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: look just like the cartoon Pinocchio from 40 years? I
- 1:21:05Speaker 5: just don't understand what's going on. I don't know where
- 1:21:08Speaker 5: their brains are.
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: Do you think Tom Hanks would slip in and out
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: and sometimes he'd be Colonel Parker? Exactly.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: Sometimes he's the colonel sometimes it's.
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: Just me an old man being an older.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: Man with crazy makeup yeah so after a while you'd
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: get lost right.
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: I mean totally totally um yeah zemeckis what up with
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: that guy.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: I i wonder quite often but yeah he's he's in
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: his day a master you know like he really put
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: together some great things and then, you know, you see,
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: so it's interesting to see him at the beginning and
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: then definitely where he goes later.
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: Is very different as a director.
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: So yeah, this was.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: Just an interesting revisiting the early.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: Days, but yeah. Well, I mean, we can start, uh,
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: start looking to wrap up in this extended, long, uh,
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: ongoing conversation here, but is there anything else you've, uh,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: seen that you want to address? Anything else you want
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: to talk about?
- 1:22:06Speaker 5: Oh my gosh. Um, Let's see here. We got anything
- 1:22:13Speaker 5: else here. I don't, I guess I should probably give
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: a recommendation and a warning about these Terrifier movies. Have
- 1:22:25Speaker 5: you seen those advertised on the internet?
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: I've seen a lot about them. I officially did. actually
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: we just on one of the horror club episodes, like
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: before we got rolling, like, like somebody wanted us to
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: watch this.
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: I mean, they're not.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: They're not committed enough to actually like join the club
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: and put it on the list. So I'm like, well,
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: we don't really care about your movie there.
- 1:22:48Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: Mostly.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: I just don't officially don't care about clowns. Yeah. That's
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: mostly my reason. I don't care. Like, I just don't care.
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. Well, here's, here's, here's, what you're going to
- 1:23:02Speaker 5: get out of these Terrifier movies because I watched both
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: of them. It took me probably about 20 isolated viewings
- 1:23:11Speaker 5: to get through them both. I had to watch them
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: as a little web series because on the pro side,
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: the guy playing Mr. Creepy Clown, Scary Man, he's really good.
- 1:23:29Speaker 5: He's got a lot of he's basically a mime. So
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: he doesn't talk or anything. So it's all body mime work,
- 1:23:35Speaker 5: you know? So, yeah.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: All right. So, yeah.
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: So, right. Okay. I know you're going like sold, right? Right.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: You haven't bumped it over the top by saying mime.
- 1:23:46Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: Okay. All I got, I got one word for you,
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: Brian mime.
- 1:23:50Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: Um, not sold, not sold, not sold.
- 1:23:53Speaker 9: Okay. All right.
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: So let's try this. Okay. Um, The color correction on
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: these movies is actually really good. Wow.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: I don't think I've ever seen that written on a
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: poster before. Awesome. If there was a video box, that
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: would be right across the bottom of it.
- 1:24:13Speaker 5: The color grading is really nice. Really nice. So, so
- 1:24:23Speaker 5: if that, if mine and really nice color correction hasn't
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: sold it, I could say that these movies, the guy
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: directing them is also doing the special makeup effects. And
- 1:24:38Speaker 5: so I would say, okay, the special makeup effects are really,
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: really good and really good old school and very state
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: of the art, uh, torturing a puppet on screen, you know,
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: just him.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: Doing fancy white clown makeup. This is also like prosthetics
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: and like latex and very things.
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: Of that nature. Very, very much. So very super mid eighties,
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: Tom Savini type. Oh, But taken to like, you know,
- 1:25:13Speaker 5: using all the latest materials and the blood looks really
- 1:25:17Speaker 5: good and the puppets look great. And super, super, super
- 1:25:23Speaker 5: gory movies.
- 1:25:24Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: And so if you like special makeup effects, it's they're
- 1:25:30Speaker 5: good for watching for that reason. The problem with these
- 1:25:34Speaker 5: movies for me personally is that they are very. very, they're,
- 1:25:40Speaker 5: they're very mean spirited movies.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: All right. Again, after a while that takes its toll.
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: I might as well just watch blonde.
- 1:25:48Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:25:49Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:25:50Speaker 5: So they're not for me, for me, they're not fun
- 1:25:53Speaker 5: to watch. They're kind of like, that's why it took
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: me like 20 times to get through two movies because they,
- 1:25:58Speaker 5: they sort of wallow in the suffering of the characters and,
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: you know? And so it's not like a quick shot
- 1:26:07Speaker 5: of an arrow coming through Bacon's neck in Friday the 13th.
- 1:26:11Speaker 5: It's like, if like, what if like Bacon screamed and
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: cried and begged for like 20 minutes and, and while
- 1:26:18Speaker 5: they were being tortured. So it's like real, it's real,
- 1:26:22Speaker 5: like technically like the prosthetics are great, but boy, it's like,
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: very hard to watch you know oddly enough i think.
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: That's what they're doing with this new like guardians of
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: the galaxy holiday special yeah i watched that the other
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: day and i did not expect that arrow through the
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: next 20 minute crying thing but i thought it was
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: weird when they brought bacon in but that's what they
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: decided to do with them that's amazing well as someone
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: who recently watched blood rage oh yeah i'm gonna.
- 1:26:54Speaker 5: Stick with that yeah that's that is a.
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: Whole lot of gore and a lot more.
- 1:26:59Speaker 13: Fun oh yeah yeah yeah yeah i was like i
- 1:27:03Speaker 13: wasn't into the the tone of the movie but yeah
- 1:27:05Speaker 13: blood rage is is just hysterical and it's so much
- 1:27:09Speaker 13: fun so.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: Good did not expect it to be that much fun
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: so yeah that's Again, kind of for all the wrong
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: reasons sometimes, but the effects were the thing I always
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: gave credit for. I was like, these effects are practical
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: and you can tell they're silly effects, but they're having
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: fun with them and they're giving you tons of blood
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: and gore and that's what you're here for. So yeah,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: I'll take that.
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. So other than that warning.
- 1:27:41Speaker 5: I'm just looking at the crap I watched recently and, uh,
- 1:27:46Speaker 5: I did show, try to show my 14 year old,
- 1:27:48Speaker 5: they live. And, uh, he said like, dad, where can
- 1:27:52Speaker 5: I get some of those left-leaning glasses that they, uh.
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: I don't know if it officially came across that way originally,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: but now I can definitely see that.
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: I would go like, but I said like, I said like, Cameron, no,
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: they're not left leaning glasses. They're showing that when he
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: puts on the glasses, he's supposed to be seeing what's
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: actually going on here. It's not just giving you a slant.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: And they want you to be a, they want you
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: to be a consumer, which is a little more rightly.
- 1:28:19Speaker 5: That's true.
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: Be a good consumer and give us more money. That's,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: that's leaning the other way. So that's balanced in its weirdness.
- 1:28:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:28:28Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:28:29Speaker 5: He, he, he basically made me turn it off. It
- 1:28:31Speaker 5: was too disturbing. He said, he said like, dad, I
- 1:28:33Speaker 5: don't want to watch a movie that says like, you know,
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: everything's broken and you can't believe in the institutions, you know? know,
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: I go like, I go like, that's so funny to
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: me because that's exactly where my head was at his age.
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: You know, it might be a little more clued in
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: than we realize. Yeah.
- 1:28:48Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: Yeah. I've said it before, I believe, but I, I'm like,
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: that's one of those that's considered a classic, but I'm like,
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: I feel like you could do a remake and it
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: would probably help. Because I mean, as much as I
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: love some Piper, but yeah, he's not there.
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: For his acting skills.
- 1:29:06Speaker 9: No, sir.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: Again, another one of those that seemed like a great guy,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: like towards the end, he was doing appearances and seemed
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: really cool, but like, yep. he's you know and his
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: inclusion there's no way that if that because to me
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: that should have been the third entry in the trilogy
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: of kurt russell right like look at it he's got
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: the hair he's got that 80s era of kurt russell
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: hair he's wearing a flannel shirt like that's what he
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: should have been following up like you got the thing
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: you got you know uh big trouble china and then
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: you got they live like that should have been the
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: And Kurt Russell in that role at that era would
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: have been great. Especially with the commentary and all this
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: other stuff. But once he's not there, then you're like, well,
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: we got Piper. Let's do this 12-minute fight.
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: Scene for no good reason.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: So I'm like, there's no way that would have been
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: included with Kurt Russell in the lead.
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: It wouldn't have been there. It would have been a tighter.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: more well balanced kind of a story that like, I
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: feel like, yeah, as much as I know it's sacrilege
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: to try to remake Carpenter, but like, I feel like there's,
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: there's room that you could do. Cause it's such an
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: interesting premise that like you could do so much with it.
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: And I feel like they kind of graze that it's
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: like the basics of what are there or what, you know,
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: stuck with us. That's why I still talk about the glasses.
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: We still say, you know.
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: Obey and consume and like, right.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: Have artwork of the crazy makeup of X. That stuff's
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: all cool, but Somewhere along the way, I feel like
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: the plot itself gets a little weak. So weak.
- 1:30:40Speaker 5: The reputation of that movie is the first 30 minutes. Yeah,
- 1:30:45Speaker 5: it's a great idea. Yeah. And the short story it's
- 1:30:49Speaker 5: based off of is the first 30 minutes of the movie.
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: And then what's the short story?
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: They don't know what to do after that.
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: They have no idea, so they have a 45-minute fight scene. Yeah, basically. Yeah,
- 1:31:01Speaker 5: but it was interesting just you know, you try to show,
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: you know, the, the coming, the, the, the, the next generation,
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: these movies and, uh, you know, they're just either they
- 1:31:11Speaker 5: take to it or they don't, but you know, um, but, uh,
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: what else did I say?
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:31:18Speaker 5: I guess we just should give lip service to everything
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: everywhere all at once. You know, you know, I don't know.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: He seems taken with that one.
- 1:31:26Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:31:26Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: It's, it's just cool to see. I wasn't short round, uh,
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: growing up, making his comeback.
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:34Speaker 5: People up with a fanny pack. So, you know, you know,
- 1:31:37Speaker 5: but yeah, other than that, man, nah, dude, you know,
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: just preparing for this episode. I was like, well, like, wow,
- 1:31:46Speaker 5: I've actually seen more movies than I thought I did. So,
- 1:31:48Speaker 5: you know, I was like, cause if you asked me
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: on the, like, you know, walking down the street, you know,
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: what have you seen? I would be like, I have,
- 1:31:55Speaker 5: I don't know. I don't, do I watch movies? I
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: have no idea. So this was cool, man. You know,
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: but yeah.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:32:06Speaker 5: I think that's it. You got anything else?
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: No, I think we've, we've covered a lot of ground here.
- 1:32:11Speaker 5: We did. We really did.
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: I am glad we got a chance to put this together.
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: That's why I wanted.
