- 0:05Speaker 1: This is the Patriots catch 22 podcasts with Evan Lazar
- 0:09Speaker 1: and Alex Barth.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:21Speaker 3: And like Mike Rabel said, the quarterback's the best athlete
- 0:24Speaker 3: on the field. He's the quarterback on the football team.
- 0:27Speaker 3: He's the shortstop on the baseball team. I think Rabel
- 0:30Speaker 3: said he's the shooting guard on the basketball team, right?
- 0:32Speaker 3: Like he's And that's Drake May. Drake May was a
- 0:36Speaker 3: really good basketball player, too.
- 0:39Speaker 2: These guys are.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Really athletic people, quarterbacks. And so I'm sure Drake May
- 0:44Speaker 3: can still punch. I'm sure he can still bring that out.
- 0:46Speaker 3: He obviously did it at North Carolina. So I'm sure
- 0:49Speaker 3: he did it in practice at North Carolina. They definitely
- 0:51Speaker 3: didn't ask him to do that cold.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Hello everybody uh welcome in it's evan lazar it's alex
- 1:02Speaker 4: bar it's a space behind the glass i'm thrown off
- 1:04Speaker 4: by this setup i'm not we are sitting down today
- 1:06Speaker 4: i i don't know what it is it's like sit
- 1:08Speaker 4: down every week it's a.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Total mental block it's nobody's fault but mine i'm just.
- 1:13Speaker 2: No you know what it's like we're new phase of
- 1:15Speaker 2: the calendar we're starting the season i just.
- 1:18Speaker 3: I feel one of these i feel relaxed but like
- 1:21Speaker 3: too relaxed you know like I'm used to this like
- 1:24Speaker 3: a couple years ago. We're just a couple guys talking.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Talking ball.
- 1:27Speaker 3: That's all it is.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You say it.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Like it's a bad thing. It's not a bad thing.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I just, I don't know. The desk has a, it's
- 1:33Speaker 3: like a more formal thing.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I remember a couple years ago, the desk was like
- 1:38Speaker 2: the in-season set and the chairs were the off-season set,
- 1:41Speaker 2: and I thought that made sense.
- 1:43Speaker 3: So when we first got this set up, and I
- 1:44Speaker 3: know no one cares about this.
- 1:46Speaker 2: No, Evan, you know how people are with these shows.
- 1:49Speaker 2: And I don't fault them. People are very particular about
- 1:51Speaker 2: their shows. There are going to be some people, understandably,
- 1:54Speaker 2: who are thrown that we're sitting in these shows.
- 1:56Speaker 3: I'm thrown by it. So when we first started, the
- 1:59Speaker 3: idea was that P.U., because it is a little bit
- 2:03Speaker 3: more laid back and not as jargony as our show,
- 2:07Speaker 3: was going to be in this set up. And then
- 2:09Speaker 3: catch 22 is going to be in the desk setup
- 2:11Speaker 3: because it's a little bit more serious, you know, but
- 2:14Speaker 3: it just became a hassle to change over the sets.
- 2:18Speaker 3: All the time. We kept on going back and forth
- 2:20Speaker 3: and back and forth. And it just it was too much.
- 2:23Speaker 3: So we stopped doing that. And then we all kind
- 2:25Speaker 3: of just agreed that we like the desk because, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 3: we like to put our notes on the desk and,
- 2:29Speaker 3: you know, like our prep for the show and all
- 2:33Speaker 3: that kind of stuff. So it's easier to have something
- 2:35Speaker 3: a desk in front of you in order to do that.
- 2:38Speaker 3: So we got kind of locked into the desk. for
- 2:42Speaker 3: a while but uh now pu on tv which you
- 2:47Speaker 3: just found out existed uh uses this setup and so
- 2:51Speaker 3: does the madden sim both pieces of content that are
- 2:54Speaker 3: in season content that you guys can all check out
- 2:56Speaker 3: uh everywhere i think patreons.com youtube so that's why we're
- 3:01Speaker 3: in this setup today i think but anyways uh that
- 3:04Speaker 3: that's a little inside baseball for you about our sets
- 3:07Speaker 3: i know very interesting stuff i'd It's riveting.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I think you underestimate how much people are interested in that.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Okay. All right. Well, cool. I'm glad you're interested in that.
- 3:16Speaker 3: But basically, today's show, the rundown, today's show. We are
- 3:20Speaker 3: going to talk about the initial rosters the first time
- 3:22Speaker 3: that we've been on this show. You've been on 17
- 3:25Speaker 3: shows since the initial roster came out.
- 3:27Speaker 2: It's probably a little high.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I went on yesterday, but we are going to talk
- 3:32Speaker 3: about the initial roster. We're going to go position by position,
- 3:34Speaker 3: get into the details, talk a little bit about the
- 3:37Speaker 3: practice squad. But I did want to open with captains
- 3:39Speaker 3: because we got that news yesterday. So that's a more prevalent,
- 3:43Speaker 3: you know, more recent news. Uh, and then the second
- 3:46Speaker 3: hour we'll open up calls and emails, probably get to
- 3:49Speaker 3: Christian Gonzalez a little bit, you know, things like that. Uh,
- 3:52Speaker 3: just starting with captain Zoe, I'll just list them off.
- 3:55Speaker 3: You know, Drake may Hunter Henry, Morgan, Moses, Roberts, Blaine,
- 3:58Speaker 3: Marcus Jones, and Kevin Bayard. There you go. First year.
- 4:03Speaker 3: on the team, first year captain for the Patriots.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Kevin Bayard has been a captain since I believe 2019,
- 4:09Speaker 2: wherever he's been.
- 4:10Speaker 3: It became very obvious to me that Kevin Bayard was
- 4:12Speaker 3: going to be at least captain material. You know, I
- 4:15Speaker 3: don't vote, so I didn't know if he would be
- 4:18Speaker 3: a captain, but at least captain material when the spring
- 4:22Speaker 3: fortune Foxborough came out and he was the one that
- 4:24Speaker 3: was already breaking down the huddle. I was like, oh yeah,
- 4:27Speaker 3: this guy's just a natural leader.
- 4:29Speaker 2: He's a Ravel's guy.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Stepping right in. Morgan Moses, unk of the offensive line.
- 4:34Speaker 2: We thought he was going to be captain last year. Easily. Meanwhile,
- 4:37Speaker 2: he's never been a captain in his career. He did
- 4:39Speaker 2: game day captain a couple times last year.
- 4:41Speaker 3: He's never been a captain in his career.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Yeah, we looked this up yesterday. Best I could find.
- 4:45Speaker 5: Wow.
- 4:46Speaker 3: At 35 years old and the type of guy that
- 4:47Speaker 3: he is, you would think he would be.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Never officially named one, I should say. So he might
- 4:51Speaker 2: have been a game day captain. Maybe there are some
- 4:53Speaker 2: teams that... Didn't give out to see where he was. Well, no,
- 4:56Speaker 2: because they still announce it, even if they don't wear
- 4:58Speaker 2: it on the jersey. So, no, best I could find.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I looked for like 10 million. Ethan Hurwitz, we're looking
- 5:02Speaker 2: it up. Never a season-long captain, I should say.
- 5:07Speaker 3: He's the leader of that group. No doubt about it.
- 5:09Speaker 3: They all look to him. He's like Yoda. He's like
- 5:12Speaker 3: a wise owl, you know?
- 5:14Speaker 2: A little bigger than Yoda.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah, they go to him and all the young guys
- 5:19Speaker 3: kind of flock to him. He's really the one that's...
- 5:23Speaker 3: behind a lot of the off the field you know
- 5:25Speaker 3: the team the offensive line dinners like all that kind
- 5:28Speaker 3: of stuff so that one was obvious hunter henry's just
- 5:31Speaker 3: been a captain a couple years now i think it
- 5:33Speaker 3: like three out of the last four i want to say.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Uh i think three in a row he wasn't initially
- 5:39Speaker 2: named a captain two years ago that was the year
- 5:42Speaker 2: that they lost all their captains and he got it
- 5:44Speaker 2: back mid-season.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Uh, consummate pro that one makes sense. And then of
- 5:49Speaker 3: course the quarterback, uh, I don't really have much, um,
- 5:52Speaker 3: you know, like I have any strong takes about the captains.
- 5:56Speaker 3: It's not something that I think is that important in
- 5:59Speaker 3: terms of, uh, you know, I know there's a lot
- 6:01Speaker 3: of kind of, why isn't Gonzalez a captain? Why isn't
- 6:04Speaker 3: AJ Brown a captain? Um, The one thing that I
- 6:07Speaker 3: would say about Gonzalez, and we've talked about this in
- 6:09Speaker 3: the past with him, he's clearly, if he's not the
- 6:12Speaker 3: best player on the team, Drake may is, and he's
- 6:14Speaker 3: the second best player on the team. So he's one
- 6:17Speaker 3: of their best players. But, For as great as he is,
- 6:22Speaker 3: and there's nothing wrong with it, he's a quiet guy.
- 6:25Speaker 3: He's not a rah-rah type of leader. Now, could he
- 6:28Speaker 3: have been a lead by example, best player, that sort
- 6:32Speaker 3: of thing? Absolutely. But I'm not overly surprised that he's
- 6:35Speaker 3: not someone that people look at as a traditional captain,
- 6:41Speaker 3: just with his personality and the way that he is.
- 6:44Speaker 3: So I think that that has something to do with,
- 6:45Speaker 3: he's a little bit more vocal now. Like he's starting
- 6:47Speaker 3: to find his voice. I think now that he's more
- 6:49Speaker 3: confident in his footings in the league is a little
- 6:51Speaker 3: bit more secure, but not somebody that I would necessarily
- 6:56Speaker 3: think of as like your traditional captain because of the personality.
- 7:01Speaker 3: But I don't think that this has anything I'm just guessing,
- 7:05Speaker 3: but I don't think this has anything to do with
- 7:06Speaker 3: the contract or anything like that. I do believe Mike Rabel,
- 7:11Speaker 3: when he says the players vote on these captains and it's,
- 7:14Speaker 3: It's decided by the players. I just think that this
- 7:17Speaker 3: was some of these guys that, too, that are maybe
- 7:21Speaker 3: leadership material. some of them were hurt during training camp.
- 7:25Speaker 2: So that's some of it too. We've seen guys not
- 7:28Speaker 2: be captains after missing time.
- 7:29Speaker 6: Right.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Like Harold Landry is not a captain because he hasn't
- 7:32Speaker 3: practiced at all.
- 7:33Speaker 7: Right.
- 7:33Speaker 3: He was a captain last year. So those, you know, schooler.
- 7:36Speaker 3: So those types of things I think may have an
- 7:38Speaker 3: impact as well. I would say the same thing. I
- 7:41Speaker 3: don't know. AJ Brown. I don't know Christian Gonzalez either,
- 7:44Speaker 3: but I haven't been around AJ Brown as much as
- 7:47Speaker 3: we have with Gonzalez, obviously. But another guy that I
- 7:50Speaker 3: think is, you know, for a, alpha number one receiver,
- 7:54Speaker 3: maybe a little quieter than you would, would think. And
- 7:57Speaker 3: it's his first year on the team and all those
- 7:58Speaker 3: types of things. Did you have anything, you know, really?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Well, if Rabel talks about it and I actually think
- 8:04Speaker 2: there's something to it that you don't need to be
- 8:07Speaker 2: a captain to be a leader, arguably the biggest leader
- 8:10Speaker 2: on this team last year was Stefan Diggs. Not a captain.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Not arguably. I think he probably was.
- 8:15Speaker 2: So definitely on offense. I don't know if there's like
- 8:17Speaker 2: a defensive guy that stands out.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he probably was in maybe Spillane on defense.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:22Speaker 3: But I think year two for Drake May, he probably
- 8:25Speaker 3: wasn't quite ready to step into that.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Really year one is like the true starter. So, yeah,
- 8:31Speaker 2: you know, they'll still be getting leadership. It's not like
- 8:34Speaker 2: those other guys voices won't be won't be relevant.
- 8:37Speaker 5: In the room.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Is it just me or is the camera shot closer?
- 8:40Speaker 2: I guess it is closer. We are closer.
- 8:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yeah, now I'm rattled by the chairs.
- 8:44Speaker 3: I told you. It's in my head.
- 8:46Speaker 2: People who are just listening to this have no clue
- 8:48Speaker 2: what's going on.
- 8:48Speaker 3: So those are your captains. If you have takes on that,
- 8:52Speaker 3: you can call and email in, whatever. I don't ever
- 8:55Speaker 3: get too worked up either way about captains. It's not
- 9:00Speaker 3: really that important to me, but it was newsworthy. So
- 9:04Speaker 3: there you go. I wanted to really focus, though, here
- 9:08Speaker 3: in the first hour on the roster and what happened
- 9:10Speaker 3: over the last couple days. Some of the most.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Like, hefty movement of a roster, especially the back of
- 9:16Speaker 3: the roster that I can remember in recent years, especially
- 9:20Speaker 3: for a team that plans on contending. It's a lot.
- 9:24Speaker 2: It was three guys, right? Or no, it was six, right?
- 9:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, they... Reid, Kiner. They've claimed.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Reid, Kiner, Latu, Moussao....
- 9:37Speaker 3: Hunter.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Hunter.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Yeah, we're talking about a pretty significant.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Six claims for a team that is planning on making
- 9:46Speaker 3: the playoffs and contending for a Super Bowl is a lot.
- 9:48Speaker 3: It's a lot. And, you know, we'll get to all that.
- 9:52Speaker 3: I think the biggest, you know, big picture takeaway before
- 9:55Speaker 3: we get into the position by position rundown that I had,
- 9:59Speaker 3: my biggest big picture takeaway is that I understand why
- 10:03Speaker 3: there's criticism of the recent drafting, especially the 2024 draft
- 10:08Speaker 3: as it pertains to depth. That's absolutely a factor. Elliot Wolfe,
- 10:11Speaker 3: you know, said as much the other day when he
- 10:13Speaker 3: spoke before cut down day that that's absolutely a factor.
- 10:17Speaker 3: the 24 draft, especially it's Drake may. And now nobody
- 10:21Speaker 3: else on the roster. Marcellus dial gets claimed by the dolphins.
- 10:25Speaker 3: He is now gone. Uh, they struck out on every
- 10:28Speaker 3: pick besides Drake may. Now that's a good pick to hit.
- 10:30Speaker 3: It's a good pick to hit, but they struck out
- 10:32Speaker 3: on every other pick besides Drake may the 24 draft,
- 10:35Speaker 3: but my bigger takeaway, I would say then the draft
- 10:40Speaker 3: pick whiffs in the 24 draft is actually the load
- 10:45Speaker 3: of mid tier free agency draft. and how they handled
- 10:48Speaker 3: that this last offseason. Last year, in Grable's first year
- 10:53Speaker 3: as the head coach, they got a ton of really
- 10:57Speaker 3: key contributions from... low to mid-level free agent signings, Kairos Tonga,
- 11:04Speaker 3: Jack Gibbons, Caleb on chase on, uh, it was a trade,
- 11:08Speaker 3: but whatever Garrett Bradbury, right. Uh, or that might've, he
- 11:12Speaker 3: might've been released, right? I don't know. Bradbury is a
- 11:14Speaker 3: trade Garrett Bradbury.
- 11:16Speaker 2: He make the bears. I know there was some question about,
- 11:18Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:19Speaker 3: That's a good question. Uh, Garrett Bradbury, Matt Collins, like
- 11:23Speaker 3: players like that, that they brought in that were not, uh,
- 11:27Speaker 3: breaking the bank. They're not huge free agent signings, but
- 11:31Speaker 3: when they had injuries to Robert Spillane, Jack Gibbons stepped
- 11:34Speaker 3: up and played commensurate football at off ball linebacker. Kairos
- 11:39Speaker 3: Tonga had a big role as a nose tackle as
- 11:41Speaker 3: a run stuffer on this team. Uh, Caleb on Jason
- 11:44Speaker 3: ended up being a starter and being a really productive
- 11:47Speaker 3: player for them, especially down the stretch in the playoffs
- 11:51Speaker 3: this year, those guys were James Hudson, Mike Brown, Kendall Vildor,
- 11:58Speaker 3: players of that ilk that are either on the practice
- 12:01Speaker 3: squad now but didn't make the 53-man roster. And I
- 12:06Speaker 3: look at a lot of those sort of low-level, mid-level
- 12:09Speaker 3: free agent signings as really good value to build depth
- 12:13Speaker 3: on your roster, especially experienced depth. And I think if
- 12:18Speaker 3: you had to look at it, they kind of whiffed
- 12:21Speaker 3: so far on that class. And it's not the AJ
- 12:24Speaker 3: Browns and it's not the Romeo Dobbs is in the
- 12:26Speaker 3: Draymond Jones is in the big signings. It's oftentimes those
- 12:30Speaker 3: signings that, you know, is Belichick's thing, the middle class, right?
- 12:33Speaker 3: Can you fill that out? So as much as I,
- 12:35Speaker 3: I think harping on the drafting is fair. I also
- 12:38Speaker 3: think that we have to, if you're looking for the
- 12:40Speaker 3: reason why they don't have great depth right now, and
- 12:43Speaker 3: they did put in six waiver claims over the last
- 12:46Speaker 3: couple of days, and they're churning the back of the
- 12:48Speaker 3: roster to find depth. I think that the Jack Gibbonses
- 12:51Speaker 3: and the Kyrus Tongas of the world are just as
- 12:53Speaker 3: important as the draft picks.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, those were both monumentally important players last year,
- 12:57Speaker 2: and we talked, I think the phrase I used was,
- 12:59Speaker 2: who is this year's Jack Gibbons? Yeah. When talking about
- 13:02Speaker 2: the linebacker room, and ultimately... near those guys we thought
- 13:05Speaker 2: Britt or Moomer on the team. Moomer's not even back
- 13:07Speaker 2: on the practice squad.
- 13:08Speaker 9: Right.
- 13:08Speaker 3: You know, just a couple more. Sorry. KJ Britt is
- 13:11Speaker 3: another one that was kind of brought in as a
- 13:13Speaker 3: one-for-one for Jack Gibbons. Now, he's on the practice squad,
- 13:16Speaker 3: but we're talking about him as a fringe roster player.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Jack Gibbons was not a fringe roster player. He was
- 13:22Speaker 3: on the team. Julian Hill gets hurt. You can't do
- 13:26Speaker 3: anything about that. But that guy didn't, you know, it
- 13:29Speaker 3: was Austin Hooper last year who was healthy and produced
- 13:33Speaker 3: and had a role in all those types of things.
- 13:35Speaker 3: So I wrote down Hill, James Hudson, Vildor, Mike Brown,
- 13:40Speaker 3: KJ Britt, those five guys for the five guys that
- 13:43Speaker 3: they were supposedly replacing.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I've got another way to do it too. Let's look
- 13:47Speaker 2: at where the claims or the moves came from. Running
- 13:52Speaker 2: back might be the one position that they just Straight
- 13:56Speaker 2: up didn't address, and they did some late draft picks.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I think they're banking on Larrison, whatever. Okay. They keep going.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Didn't add a wide receiver. Tight end.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Latu.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Julian Hill gets hurt. Yes. Tackle. Walter Rouse. That ties
- 14:10Speaker 2: into James Hudson and trying to add him. They didn't
- 14:15Speaker 2: add anybody on the edge, which is a little surprising,
- 14:17Speaker 2: but they didn't add it. They didn't waiver claim edge. Linebacker. Britt,
- 14:21Speaker 2: like you said.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Multiple waiver claims at linebacker.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Safety. Mike Brown.
- 14:24Speaker 6: Yep.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Jalen Reed.
- 14:26Speaker 2: So a lot of these additions kind of line up
- 14:29Speaker 2: with spots where they added players that we thought were
- 14:31Speaker 2: going to be depth guys. The one exception is probably
- 14:34Speaker 2: running back, which is... I think you can add a
- 14:37Speaker 2: third running back with a seventh-round pick at roster cuts.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I got no problem with that. And the one surprising
- 14:41Speaker 2: spot they didn't add is Edge, which is a spot
- 14:42Speaker 2: I think they under-addressed in the spring.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Yeah, so I just look at that as... It's two
- 14:48Speaker 3: different things in the same thing. The draft picks you're
- 14:52Speaker 3: drafting to develop, not just depth, but you're hoping that
- 14:54Speaker 3: there's upside with those young players. The free agent signings
- 14:58Speaker 3: you're adding just to fill a role immediately on the
- 15:01Speaker 3: roster for one to two years. These level of free agents.
- 15:06Speaker 3: And this is one thing that I thought... Bill Belichick
- 15:10Speaker 3: did better than anybody was identifying those mid tier free
- 15:15Speaker 3: agents that they could bring in and really kind of
- 15:18Speaker 3: fill out the roster. And that's why a lot of
- 15:21Speaker 3: those years, you know, with Brady, they didn't have a
- 15:24Speaker 3: lot of depth concerns was because they had a really
- 15:26Speaker 3: strong middle class of the roster.
- 15:28Speaker 2: This roster, this is the opposite of a Belichick roster.
- 15:31Speaker 3: This roster has become very top heavy.
- 15:33Speaker 2: The, the, we used to say like, all right, Brady aside,
- 15:38Speaker 2: the top, 10 guys on the Patriots roster, maybe weren't
- 15:41Speaker 2: the level of some of the other contenders on any
- 15:43Speaker 2: given year.
- 15:43Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:44Speaker 2: But that like 15 to 30 group was so much
- 15:48Speaker 2: better than everybody else's 15 to 30, that that was
- 15:51Speaker 2: going to be the difference. That's how he's talked about
- 15:52Speaker 2: the Belichick teams this year. I'll even say the Patriots
- 15:56Speaker 2: one to 20. Yeah. Might be, is one of the
- 16:00Speaker 2: best in football. The Rams are short of the Rams.
- 16:03Speaker 2: The Rams are, might be the best team I've ever
- 16:05Speaker 2: seen assembled in my time covering the league, which is
- 16:07Speaker 2: not that long, but still, um, The Patriots won through
- 16:10Speaker 2: 20s right up there with anybody but the Rams. 25 on? Yeah.
- 16:17Speaker 2: It's pretty thin. So it's kind of the opposite of
- 16:19Speaker 2: what you say about Belichick.
- 16:20Speaker 3: You feel pretty good about their starting 11 on both sides.
- 16:24Speaker 3: There's some positions I could feel better about, like Edge,
- 16:27Speaker 3: that we'll get to.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Edge is really the only spot, starter-wise, that, I mean,
- 16:30Speaker 2: they're not amazing in every spot, but Edge is the
- 16:33Speaker 2: only spot that I look at and say, like, I
- 16:34Speaker 2: wish they had more.
- 16:36Speaker 3: They have starting caliber players everywhere. Even edge. They just,
- 16:39Speaker 3: I wish that those starting caliber players might be a
- 16:42Speaker 3: little bit better.
- 16:43Speaker 2: One starting caliber player that I, I'm not sure about ponder. Okay.
- 16:46Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 16:46Speaker 2: I don't know if you're counting. I'm not counting Landry. No.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Cause he's her.
- 16:49Speaker 7: Okay.
- 16:49Speaker 3: I'm not counting.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Ponder could be, he's an unknown everywhere else. I'm like,
- 16:53Speaker 2: I mean, I got one of the best cornerback groups
- 16:55Speaker 2: in the league. One of the best safety groups in
- 16:56Speaker 2: the league. One of the best wide receiver rooms, you know,
- 16:59Speaker 2: Hunter Henry tight ends, maybe a little more. We'll see
- 17:02Speaker 2: beyond Hunter Henry, but Hunter Henry, I believe in, I
- 17:04Speaker 2: think the offensive line is going to be solid.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Running back room's good. Obviously, quarterback, check the box. Like,
- 17:12Speaker 2: everywhere but edge, I honestly feel good about.
- 17:14Speaker 3: It feels to me like, you know, get into the
- 17:17Speaker 3: nitty gritty. The make or break of the season is
- 17:22Speaker 3: going to come down to how.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Well, they're at depth players play when those inevitable injuries come, right?
- 17:29Speaker 3: They are very, I know everybody says this, but they,
- 17:31Speaker 3: it's true. They were very lucky with injuries last year.
- 17:34Speaker 3: They just were. And if they aren't as lucky or
- 17:37Speaker 3: they have a different outcome this year, they're going to
- 17:40Speaker 3: have to play more of these depth guys that we
- 17:42Speaker 3: have question marks about. And we'll see how that goes.
- 17:45Speaker 3: The other big picture sort of, you know, ceiling thing
- 17:49Speaker 3: of the roster is clearly that edge rusher group that
- 17:52Speaker 3: that edge rusher group to me for a team that
- 17:55Speaker 3: is hoping again to plan on contending for a super
- 17:59Speaker 3: bowl that is not necessarily a super bowl caliber edge
- 18:04Speaker 3: group you know most of the time when you talk
- 18:06Speaker 3: about super bowl rosters you're deep at pass rush.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Right that when we talk about concerns i've said this
- 18:12Speaker 2: before but like The last year, as we talked about concern,
- 18:15Speaker 2: that was like any given Sunday this could bite them.
- 18:17Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Now we're talking mostly the depth concerns. I mean, these
- 18:20Speaker 2: are all on the margins. They're a good football team.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Right.
- 18:22Speaker 2: I think what's funny is because the depth has become
- 18:26Speaker 2: such a headline the last few weeks, I'm not saying
- 18:28Speaker 2: it shouldn't be. It's been a problem. But, like, when's
- 18:31Speaker 2: the last time we talked about Drake Mayweather? When's the
- 18:32Speaker 2: last time we talked about Milton Williams? When's the last
- 18:34Speaker 2: time we talked about AJ?
- 18:35Speaker 3: Well, they also didn't play in the preseason.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Well, that's part of it, too. But, like, I'm looking
- 18:37Speaker 2: forward to getting– like, they still have these guys at
- 18:39Speaker 2: the top. You know what I mean? So I'm excited
- 18:41Speaker 2: for that. But– Like, a lot of these problems we
- 18:44Speaker 2: talk about, they're champagne problems.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 18:47Speaker 2: In terms of, you know, oh, who's their third boundary corner?
- 18:50Speaker 2: Who's their third running back? Who's their blocking tight end?
- 18:55Speaker 2: And it matters if you want to win a Super Bowl.
- 18:57Speaker 2: The on-the-margin stuff matters, but it's on-the-margin stuff. Edge is
- 19:01Speaker 2: the one thing that's not an on-the-margin thing. Edge is
- 19:03Speaker 2: the one thing that week in and week out could
- 19:05Speaker 2: be a problem for them.
- 19:06Speaker 6: Yep.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Okay, let's get into the breakdown here. So I'll list
- 19:10Speaker 3: out the names, and then I have a facilitation question
- 19:13Speaker 3: at each position.
- 19:15Speaker 2: So I started with Felger mass later, so I should
- 19:17Speaker 2: be prepared to be facilitated.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Start with, uh, with quarterback here. I've done this so
- 19:23Speaker 3: many times at this point, I think I could probably
- 19:25Speaker 3: do this off the top of my head, which is,
- 19:26Speaker 3: I don't know if that's a good thing or a
- 19:28Speaker 3: bad thing. Uh, Drake made Tommy DeVito, Baron Morton.
- 19:31Speaker 2: I don't really give your phone. I want to see
- 19:32Speaker 2: if you can do off top of your head.
- 19:33Speaker 3: No, I got, I got any of my questions in
- 19:35Speaker 3: my rundown.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Don't can I see if I can do it off
- 19:37Speaker 2: the top of my head?
- 19:37Speaker 3: Uh, sure. If you really want to. Uh, Baron Morton,
- 19:41Speaker 3: I would say is really the only mild surprise. I
- 19:45Speaker 3: don't really have much else to add about the arrest
- 19:47Speaker 3: of DeVito in May. I, did think that he showed
- 19:52Speaker 3: enough to make it as the third quarterback, uh, the
- 19:54Speaker 3: emergency quarterback thing. You do need to be on the
- 19:57Speaker 3: roster to be the emergency quarterback. I looked this up though.
- 20:00Speaker 3: The rule came back in 2023. Nobody has ever used it.
- 20:04Speaker 3: It's never come into play. Yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I think the concept of having it though is too valuable.
- 20:09Speaker 3: It's a free game day roster spot in theory, but
- 20:13Speaker 3: you know, it's not a free 53.
- 20:14Speaker 2: It's not a free, but you have teams even keeping
- 20:17Speaker 2: four quarterbacks.
- 20:18Speaker 3: You do. I think this is becoming three is that
- 20:20Speaker 3: now the norm and four is becoming the overkill.
- 20:23Speaker 2: It's just reflective around the league of the value of
- 20:25Speaker 2: that position. You know, it's, I liken it to, uh, um, yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 2: you live in an apartment. Like, do you have those
- 20:34Speaker 2: like sprinklers in your apartment?
- 20:37Speaker 3: Oh, like for fires?
- 20:38Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 20:38Speaker 3: No, we don't have them in the apartment.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Okay, but like hypothetically you have those in a building, right?
- 20:41Speaker 3: We have them in the hallways, but not in the.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yeah. You ever use them? No. Are they still valuable?
- 20:46Speaker 3: Sure.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:48Speaker 3: So it's insurance.
- 20:49Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 20:50Speaker 3: That's what Belichick used to say. It's just like buying insurance.
- 20:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 20:52Speaker 3: You know, you don't, you hope you don't need to
- 20:54Speaker 3: use the policy, but when you need it and you
- 20:56Speaker 3: have it, that makes it all the better.
- 20:59Speaker 7: Right.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Right.
- 21:00Speaker 3: I think with Maureen, I thought he showed enough potential
- 21:03Speaker 3: as a pocket passer, you know, McDaniel style, quick game,
- 21:06Speaker 3: get the ball out first and second level. When he
- 21:10Speaker 3: tried to play make is when it got dicey in
- 21:12Speaker 3: the preseason, when he was extending drop backs outside the
- 21:16Speaker 3: pocket and, when he was trying to push the ball
- 21:18Speaker 3: down the field. That was when the turnover-worthy plays started
- 21:22Speaker 3: to creep up on him, especially in that Cleveland game.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Two of those big turnover-worthy plays in Cleveland were him
- 21:27Speaker 3: trying to extend the play and.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Make something happen. I do not think those interceptions were
- 21:31Speaker 2: his worst plays. He had worse plays.
- 21:34Speaker 3: I don't know. The one where he went out to
- 21:36Speaker 3: his left and got hit while he was there.
- 21:38Speaker 2: The line gave him no shot on that play.
- 21:40Speaker 3: That was a pretty bad one.
- 21:41Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 21:42Speaker 3: That one's got to be third row.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I think it makes sense. I think it makes sense.
- 21:46Speaker 2: He does. I heard this comp before the draft and
- 21:49Speaker 2: I didn't see it as much. Maybe I'm seeing a
- 21:50Speaker 2: little more now.
- 21:52Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 21:52Speaker 2: But there's nothing wrong with that as your third quarterback
- 21:55Speaker 2: is fine. If he, if he's bought into that, right.
- 21:58Speaker 2: I think Baron Morton is.
- 21:59Speaker 3: And if you develop Baron Morton to behind the scenes
- 22:03Speaker 3: and then the next year in the spring and in
- 22:05Speaker 3: the summer, Can he eventually be Drake Mays' primary backup?
- 22:09Speaker 2: Because he replaced Tommy DeVito, yeah. That's the plan.
- 22:11Speaker 3: On a rookie contract and all that stuff for a
- 22:14Speaker 3: couple of years. I think that that's the hope with him,
- 22:16Speaker 3: and I think it's worth keeping him on the roster
- 22:18Speaker 3: for that. Running back, you want to... What do you got?
- 22:21Speaker 2: Running back, we have Ramondre Stevenson, Travion Henderson, Corey Kiner,
- 22:25Speaker 2: and then Hassan Haskins and Lane Larrison on the practice squad.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Correct. So... I guess, you know, we haven't been on
- 22:32Speaker 3: the show since they added Kiner. So that that was
- 22:34Speaker 3: where my thought immediately went to is just our thoughts
- 22:37Speaker 3: on on Corey Kiner. I also I feel for Lynn Larson.
- 22:41Speaker 3: All the reporting indicates it sounds like he was the
- 22:45Speaker 3: 54th guy.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I feel like a lot of cut down day people
- 22:47Speaker 2: view it as like this fun thing where it's like,
- 22:50Speaker 2: you know, you're you're coming down the Ross and there's
- 22:51Speaker 2: a lot of transactions and there's news and. As somebody
- 22:55Speaker 2: who follows it, I can see how it's entertaining. It's
- 22:58Speaker 2: not fun for the guys in the room. I just
- 23:00Speaker 2: would remind people of that. He might have been told
- 23:04Speaker 2: he was making the team.
- 23:06Speaker 3: He might have been told. I think it was down
- 23:08Speaker 3: to the wire as close as 545 with the deadline
- 23:12Speaker 3: at 6. They made the move for Rouse. He was
- 23:15Speaker 3: the 54th guy. And it just... It just happens. It's
- 23:19Speaker 3: the business.
- 23:19Speaker 2: It happens. I wonder why, and they couldn't have done
- 23:22Speaker 2: it with both of them, but I wonder why Behringer
- 23:24Speaker 2: or Jacobs wasn't placed on IR on cut-down day. Yeah,
- 23:27Speaker 2: so my thought, because I brought that up yesterday. And
- 23:31Speaker 2: then they would have kept four running backs, which I
- 23:32Speaker 2: said was a possibility.
- 23:33Speaker 3: The only reason why I could see them not wanting
- 23:37Speaker 3: to do that is that in order to do it
- 23:41Speaker 3: on cut-down day, you have to designate him to return. Whereas...
- 23:46Speaker 3: they don't designate the player to return on in-season IR.
- 23:50Speaker 2: So... But just because you designated him to return doesn't
- 23:53Speaker 2: mean he has to return.
- 23:54Speaker 3: No, but there's more flexibility in terms of burning the
- 23:57Speaker 3: designated to return spots.
- 23:58Speaker 2: But they didn't end up using the other spot.
- 24:00Speaker 3: But I think that if you designate the player to
- 24:03Speaker 3: return on cut down day, it might count towards one
- 24:05Speaker 3: of your eight.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Oh, does it?
- 24:06Speaker 3: That's weird. So that's, I think, maybe where the flexibility
- 24:11Speaker 3: comes in. I have to look into that detail of it.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Maybe Miguel can help me out on that.
- 24:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:16Speaker 3: But that's Pat's cap for... I DM him with these
- 24:20Speaker 3: minutiae questions at the CBA, but they, I think that
- 24:24Speaker 3: that might be in play here in terms of flexibility.
- 24:27Speaker 3: So yeah, even though Berenger and Jacobs are eligible to return,
- 24:32Speaker 3: you don't need to designate them until they start practicing again.
- 24:35Speaker 3: So you have eight of those in season. That's the
- 24:38Speaker 3: only thought that I had was they, it was in
- 24:40Speaker 3: terms of just, you know, that sort of detail.
- 24:43Speaker 2: So there are, you're, what you're saying is they're already
- 24:45Speaker 2: at seven by placing Marcus Bryant.
- 24:47Speaker 3: That might be the case. I don't know.
- 24:48Speaker 7: That would make sense.
- 24:49Speaker 2: But, At least Behringer is a guy that should be
- 24:51Speaker 2: coming back.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 24:53Speaker 2: They said it wasn't a major injury. So, but yeah,
- 24:55Speaker 2: it's tough for Larrison. I still think we see him elevated.
- 24:57Speaker 2: I still think we maybe see him added to the
- 24:59Speaker 2: active roster at some point. He looked like he was
- 25:01Speaker 2: going to be one of their top kick returners. If
- 25:03Speaker 2: I had to guess right now, especially with Travion Henderson
- 25:05Speaker 2: not practicing yesterday, and we'll see, we still got a week,
- 25:07Speaker 2: but happy Sunday, by the way. I think that Larrison
- 25:13Speaker 2: and wish now ski are probably your two practice squad
- 25:16Speaker 2: elevations for the opener.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:18Speaker 2: But you know, I think kinder it's been clear. We
- 25:21Speaker 2: talked about this, that that third back, they want the
- 25:24Speaker 2: ground and pound bowling ball body blow. And that's what
- 25:27Speaker 2: kinder is not as big as some of those other guys,
- 25:30Speaker 2: as big as a guy like Haskins. And he, he
- 25:32Speaker 2: flashed some in the preseason. So maybe they feel like
- 25:34Speaker 2: this is buying low on a guy. He might have
- 25:36Speaker 2: more upside than Haskins. I think Haskins is a more
- 25:38Speaker 2: proven player for sure. So that's probably where it is. And,
- 25:42Speaker 2: You know, Larrison's skill set more mirrors Henderson. So that
- 25:47Speaker 2: just might be. Also, like, if you trade for a guy,
- 25:48Speaker 2: you can't put him on the practice squad. So they
- 25:49Speaker 2: might have liked Kiner, added him, and then it's all right. Well,
- 25:52Speaker 2: we'll elevate Larrison, and we'll figure out what happens with Kiner.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Some of these guys that they traded for, Reid's going
- 25:57Speaker 2: to be here. Reid, I think, is part of their
- 25:59Speaker 2: long-term plans to be on this year. Kiner and Roush, like,
- 26:03Speaker 2: it's Roush, right? Not Roush?
- 26:04Speaker 3: Yeah, and in law, too, too. I would put it
- 26:07Speaker 3: in this category.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Our guys that I could see here for a few weeks, well,
- 26:10Speaker 2: he was a waiver claim. You know, if they move
- 26:12Speaker 2: on from Kiner or they move on from Rouse, I
- 26:15Speaker 2: think people, well, why'd you trade for him? Just moving
- 26:17Speaker 2: on from like a sixth, seventh round pick swap. They
- 26:19Speaker 2: had so many sixths too. Like, I don't know if
- 26:21Speaker 2: it gets to the first month, month and a half
- 26:23Speaker 2: of the season. It's not ideal. You'd rather just have
- 26:26Speaker 2: that guy on your roster, but I'm not convinced that
- 26:29Speaker 2: those guys, like we could get to a point where
- 26:30Speaker 2: like Marcus Bryant comes back. Walter Rouse, the guy that
- 26:34Speaker 2: they move on from.
- 26:35Speaker 3: So those waiver claims, just technicality, they have to be
- 26:39Speaker 3: on the roster for three weeks.
- 26:40Speaker 2: The waiver claims have to stay. I'm talking more about
- 26:42Speaker 2: the two guys they traded for.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Kiner is going to be here. I actually,
- 26:46Speaker 3: watching his tape from down the stretch, he played a
- 26:49Speaker 3: little bit for Arizona because they were out of it.
- 26:52Speaker 3: You know, he played some of their depth guys down
- 26:55Speaker 3: the stretch last year. Then he played a lot in
- 26:57Speaker 3: the preseason. I saw a more dynamic runner than the
- 27:01Speaker 3: guys they had in house, like between the tackles runner,
- 27:03Speaker 3: you know, Larrison might be a more dynamic passing game player. Uh,
- 27:08Speaker 3: but in terms of like Haskins, uh, J Michael hasty,
- 27:12Speaker 3: like those types of players, jam Miller, I thought kinder
- 27:16Speaker 3: had a little bit more to them than those guys.
- 27:18Speaker 3: A little bit more wiggle, a little bit more explosiveness, uh,
- 27:22Speaker 3: can make guys miss a little bit more. He forced
- 27:24Speaker 3: nine missed tackles in the preseason, uh, Uh, you know,
- 27:26Speaker 3: things like that. I don't think that he's a real
- 27:29Speaker 3: dynamic pass catcher. I think he's more of a outlet
- 27:31Speaker 3: check down type of player in the passing game through
- 27:34Speaker 3: some good blocks and blitz pickup. It was a really
- 27:37Speaker 3: small sample size. I think he only had like eight
- 27:40Speaker 3: or nine blitz pickups that I could watch over the last,
- 27:42Speaker 3: you know, last end of last year into the preseason
- 27:45Speaker 3: this year. But Haskins wears contact. Like he's just a bully, right?
- 27:49Speaker 3: He's just a bowling ball. there's nothing wrong with that,
- 27:52Speaker 3: but he's not a dynamic runner. He's not great in
- 27:55Speaker 3: the open field with the football, like those types of things.
- 27:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:58Speaker 3: I not to hype kinder too much. I'm not trying
- 28:00Speaker 3: to make them sound like Adrian Peterson, but I just
- 28:02Speaker 3: thought watching him, uh, he was a little bit more
- 28:05Speaker 3: dynamic of a mover than some of the guys they
- 28:07Speaker 3: had in house. So I actually think it's a marginal upgrade.
- 28:10Speaker 3: It's a third running back.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 3: But I think it's a marginal upgrade. All right. So I,
- 28:14Speaker 3: I think that he's going to be around. I think
- 28:16Speaker 3: you can return kickoffs too.
- 28:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:18Speaker 3: If they want them to do that as well. So
- 28:20Speaker 3: I look at you, I thought you nailed it though,
- 28:22Speaker 3: in terms of the, the skillset and the body type,
- 28:25Speaker 3: it's a little bit smaller than Terrell Jennings.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:28Speaker 3: But he's same kind of player kind of player. Like
- 28:31Speaker 3: that's what they look for in that spot. I think Haskins,
- 28:34Speaker 3: in theory would fill that kind of role but i
- 28:36Speaker 3: just don't think he's fast enough i don't think he's
- 28:39Speaker 3: as explosive as kiner uh so i think that they're
- 28:41Speaker 3: hoping that they have a little bit more juice with
- 28:44Speaker 3: kiner than what they had uh with haskins in house
- 28:47Speaker 3: but a lot of these guys too that we talked
- 28:49Speaker 3: about on the practice squad vildor brit haskins you know
- 28:53Speaker 3: players like that if those guys end up being elevated
- 28:58Speaker 3: for the first couple weeks of the season, I wouldn't
- 29:00Speaker 3: be surprised.
- 29:01Speaker 2: No.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Because they're the ones that have been here. They know
- 29:03Speaker 3: the system. They're familiar. All that kind of stuff. Moving on.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Wide receivers.
- 29:08Speaker 2: A.J.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Brown.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Yep. Romeo Dobbs. Pop Douglas. Yep. Matt Collins.
- 29:14Speaker 6: Yep.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Is that five? Chisholm. No.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Who do I miss? Kyle Williams.
- 29:18Speaker 6: Damn.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Sixth. So I just wrote down best wide receiver room
- 29:23Speaker 3: since the Patriots have had.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Probably 17.
- 29:26Speaker 3: I would say 2017. So that's a decade ago. That's
- 29:30Speaker 3: what we're talking about here. I thought that Kyle Dixon,
- 29:34Speaker 3: Cameron Dorner, I thought those guys had some flashes in
- 29:37Speaker 3: the summer that... if we were talking about 2019 to
- 29:42Speaker 3: maybe even all the way up to last year, but
- 29:45Speaker 3: especially up to 24 guys like Dixon and Dorner would
- 29:48Speaker 3: have been like, Oh, these UDFA receivers, maybe even Nick
- 29:51Speaker 3: DeGennaro too. this year you just couldn't make the team
- 29:55Speaker 3: as one of those guys there. They were too stacked.
- 29:57Speaker 3: They were so stacked. They traded case on booty because
- 29:59Speaker 3: they had too many wide receivers. So I, they, this room,
- 30:04Speaker 3: as much as we talked about some of the other
- 30:06Speaker 3: issues with the roster and the depth and all that
- 30:07Speaker 3: kind of stuff, they have just done an incredible job
- 30:11Speaker 3: of remaking this room. And this is now a strength
- 30:13Speaker 3: of this football team.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:14Speaker 10: Oh yeah.
- 30:14Speaker 2: No, it really is. And honestly, it's funny. Not much
- 30:17Speaker 2: to talk about here. It was kind of chalk the
- 30:18Speaker 2: whole summer. It was, are they going to trade booty
- 30:20Speaker 2: or not? They did. That was it. And, I think
- 30:23Speaker 2: everybody slots in. We'll see what they do. I don't
- 30:26Speaker 2: know who the volume guy is yet or if it's
- 30:28Speaker 2: truly going to be spread out more. Is it Romeo Dobbs?
- 30:31Speaker 2: Is it Pop Douglas? Is it somebody else? But you
- 30:33Speaker 2: kind of know who your starting three are. Hollins and
- 30:37Speaker 2: Williams are going to rotate in, I think, somewhat regularly.
- 30:40Speaker 2: We'll see if Chisholm dresses on game days. If he does,
- 30:42Speaker 2: he's Pop Douglas' backup, probably plays some special teams. One
- 30:45Speaker 2: of the clearer positions, I think, on the roster.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's the best position group on the roster. Now,
- 30:51Speaker 3: quarterback obviously has Drake May.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Quarterback's its own thing.
- 30:54Speaker 3: But outside of that.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Position where more than one person plays.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Depth, talent at the top, they got it all at
- 31:00Speaker 3: this spot. I don't think there's much more to add
- 31:03Speaker 3: other than that. Tight end, they now have five. I
- 31:06Speaker 3: count the fullback with the tight end.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's Henry, Raritan, Arkin, Latu, and Reggie Gilliam. Apparently, though,
- 31:15Speaker 2: with Vrabel, the fullback is not in the tight end's room.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Oh, who said that?
- 31:19Speaker 2: I thought I heard that somewhere. I'll look more into it.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Oh, you should look more into that.
- 31:23Speaker 2: I'll look more into that.
- 31:24Speaker 3: I think we have offensive assistants coming up, so maybe
- 31:27Speaker 3: we can ask them.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:28Speaker 3: That would be, because it's always been that in any
- 31:32Speaker 3: team that I've ever covered. It's always been with the.
- 31:35Speaker 2: I might have misheard something. It's very possible.
- 31:38Speaker 3: When Nick Cayley was here as the tight ends coach
- 31:40Speaker 3: under Josh McDaniels, they met with the tight ends.
- 31:44Speaker 7: Right.
- 31:44Speaker 3: So that would be different for Josh, too.
- 31:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:50Speaker 3: We'll figure that one out.
- 31:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 31:51Speaker 3: So on the tight ends, a lot to another guy,
- 31:54Speaker 3: new guy, dislike kinder, just what I thought was interesting
- 31:58Speaker 3: about watching him. Well, first of all, we, we both
- 32:00Speaker 3: remember him from Alabama.
- 32:02Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 32:02Speaker 2: 23 draft.
- 32:02Speaker 3: I found my notes from that.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Just to catch up. He's had a rough career.
- 32:07Speaker 3: He had some injuries.
- 32:08Speaker 2: So he got hurt. His, the preseason finale is rookie
- 32:11Speaker 2: or he tore his meniscus. So he missed that whole season.
- 32:15Speaker 2: gets cut by the Niners the next summer, ended up
- 32:19Speaker 2: in Cleveland, didn't play a ton and then was on
- 32:22Speaker 2: the Eagles last year, played like a hundred offensive snaps,
- 32:24Speaker 2: but didn't get a target.
- 32:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Played a lot on special teams. So he's, you know,
- 32:30Speaker 2: I talked to him a little bit yesterday and he
- 32:32Speaker 2: talked about, you know, being happy, a team, I'm trying
- 32:35Speaker 2: to remember the exact phrasing he used, being happy that
- 32:37Speaker 2: a team, uh, recognized his ability, took a chance on
- 32:41Speaker 2: his ability, something like that. I think I have it here. Um,
- 32:48Speaker 2: I'll see if I can find it in a second.
- 32:49Speaker 2: But he's a guy that there might be some untapped potential.
- 32:53Speaker 2: That being said, I saw a lot of people making
- 32:56Speaker 2: that claim about Tanner Arkin. I think he's mainly here
- 32:59Speaker 2: for special teams. I don't know how much he's a
- 33:02Speaker 2: part of the tight end equation. And we also didn't
- 33:04Speaker 2: see him on the practice field yesterday. I think he's
- 33:07Speaker 2: here mainly to play in the kicking game.
- 33:09Speaker 3: So I agree. I think that he is definitely mainly
- 33:12Speaker 3: here for that. But... They clearly had a role.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Believe in my ability is what he said. He was
- 33:18Speaker 2: happy to see a team believe in his ability.
- 33:19Speaker 3: Yeah. They clearly have a role or a vision in
- 33:23Speaker 3: mind for a role that Julian Hill was supposed to fill.
- 33:26Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 33:27Speaker 3: And when Julian Hill went down with the injury in
- 33:29Speaker 3: the spring, they gave first ups to that, to Tanner Arkin.
- 33:33Speaker 3: And it's a blocking role, but it's a pretty versatile
- 33:36Speaker 3: blocking role. It's not just stick your hand in the
- 33:39Speaker 3: dirt next to the tackle and block the guy in
- 33:41Speaker 3: front of you. They want to play this player, I
- 33:44Speaker 3: would say, more like a traditional H-back that's playing off
- 33:48Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage, that is playing from multiple alignments
- 33:53Speaker 3: on the offense, maybe even some out of the backfield.
- 33:56Speaker 3: That was what Latu was doing in Philadelphia. He was
- 33:58Speaker 3: not a traditional Y in Philadelphia. He was playing off
- 34:03Speaker 3: the line, blocking across the formation, lead blocking from the
- 34:07Speaker 3: backfield as a fullback, a traditional fullback alignment. two back runs,
- 34:12Speaker 3: things like that. What I found interesting about that is
- 34:15Speaker 3: I think we all kind of assume that Reggie Gilliam
- 34:19Speaker 3: is going to do a lot of those types of things.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Then Arkin makes the team with that role in mind. Now,
- 34:26Speaker 3: I thought Arkin's preseason tape was a little bit rough
- 34:29Speaker 3: around the edges. So maybe that was what they're seeing
- 34:32Speaker 3: with Latu is that they're not entirely sold that Arkin's
- 34:36Speaker 3: up for it just yet. So maybe Latu is a
- 34:39Speaker 3: guy that has some NFL experience making those types of blocks.
- 34:43Speaker 3: I'm just interested from a schematic perspective where that goes
- 34:48Speaker 3: because I It's not a traditional Josh McDaniels gap run
- 34:53Speaker 3: downhill role. This is more of a Kyle use checky
- 34:57Speaker 3: type of thing, you know, that they're trying to get
- 35:00Speaker 3: some movement across the formation, some movement up to the
- 35:04Speaker 3: second level. If they're going to run a lot of
- 35:06Speaker 3: outside zone or wide zone, they're trying to get a
- 35:09Speaker 3: blocker up added to block out the nickel and the
- 35:12Speaker 3: force defenders and things like that. That's where they're really
- 35:15Speaker 3: more looking for this type of tight end. Then we're
- 35:19Speaker 3: going to put our hand in the dirt next to
- 35:20Speaker 3: the tackle and block, you know. defensive ends and outside linebackers.
- 35:25Speaker 3: So I'm fascinated to see where they see all these
- 35:28Speaker 3: guys going, you know, like obviously you can't play them
- 35:30Speaker 3: all at once, but Gilliam's going to do some of this.
- 35:34Speaker 3: I think the role they envisioned for Arkin is some
- 35:36Speaker 3: of this, the role they probably envisioned with lot to
- 35:38Speaker 3: has a lot of overlap in that category. So it
- 35:41Speaker 3: just seems like that's the body type. That's the type
- 35:43Speaker 3: of player. He's only like six, four, four and a half, 240,
- 35:46Speaker 3: 245 pounds. Um, So he's not a blocking tight end
- 35:52Speaker 3: in that traditional sense. So I'm interested to see how
- 35:55Speaker 3: that goes from there. He is a good special teams player.
- 35:58Speaker 2: He blocked the punt.
- 36:00Speaker 3: He told me yesterday that that was like a game
- 36:02Speaker 3: plan sort of thing to have him rush over the
- 36:06Speaker 3: personal protector there in the A-gap, I guess I should say,
- 36:09Speaker 3: the long snapper. And that was like sort of a
- 36:12Speaker 3: scheme thing that they found with a protection issue with
- 36:15Speaker 3: the opponent more than anything. But he did block a punt.
- 36:19Speaker 3: And we'll see what happens. But it's interesting to me
- 36:21Speaker 3: that they're kind of changing... it's not Dwayne Allen, I
- 36:25Speaker 3: guess is where I'm trying to try to get it
- 36:28Speaker 3: out as simply as I can. It's not Dwayne Allen.
- 36:30Speaker 3: It's this different type of like mold of tight end
- 36:32Speaker 3: that they're looking for. Uh, that was supposed to be
- 36:35Speaker 3: Julian Hill.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 36:37Speaker 3: And now they kind of have two or three guys
- 36:38Speaker 3: that can do that sort of thing. So I think
- 36:40Speaker 3: ultimately this all ends up with Gilliam just doing it all.
- 36:45Speaker 3: And we're probably overhyping the Arkin and Cameron lot to
- 36:48Speaker 3: element of it, but they clearly are trying to, to,
- 36:53Speaker 3: Change up that schematic thing a little bit. Offensive line,
- 36:56Speaker 3: there's 10 of them. You think you can get all 10?
- 36:58Speaker 2: Yeah, all right. So Campbell, Vera Tucker, Wilson, Onwenu, Moses. Yep.
- 37:05Speaker 2: That's five. Lomu, Crownover. Yep. Ben Brown.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Yep.
- 37:11Speaker 2: GVR.
- 37:12Speaker 3: Yep.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Greg Van Roten, Walter Rouse. Yep.
- 37:14Speaker 3: There you go. And then Marcus Bryan on injured reserve.
- 37:16Speaker 2: On injured reserve. And then, oh, I didn't do the
- 37:18Speaker 2: practice squad for some of these. So they don't have
- 37:20Speaker 2: any practice squad tight ends, do they?
- 37:22Speaker 7: Uh, no.
- 37:22Speaker 2: No, so the wide receivers were Dorner and Dixon there.
- 37:27Speaker 8: Yes.
- 37:27Speaker 2: So practice squad offensive linemen are Kubas, the guy they
- 37:32Speaker 2: got from the Giants.
- 37:32Speaker 3: There's three of them.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Kubas. Yep. Rizzi.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Yep.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Jacob Rizzi, who is here.
- 37:38Speaker 7: And then.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Lawrence Metz. Yes.
- 37:40Speaker 3: So, Metz is the.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Guard, center, tackle.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Metz is the free spot.
- 37:43Speaker 2: Yep.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Rizzi, you need a scout team center.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Yep.
- 37:47Speaker 3: So, you need somebody that is going to snap the
- 37:49Speaker 3: ball to the scout team quarterback.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Guard, center, tackle. Those three guys. Yeah.
- 37:53Speaker 3: So, that makes a lot of sense. As far as
- 37:56Speaker 3: this group offensive line-wise, this is.
- 37:59Speaker 2: How do they get Kubas, but not Kyle Williams?
- 38:01Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Warming up.
- 38:04Speaker 3: That's like one of your guys, too. I know.
- 38:05Speaker 2: I needed a... a breakfast ball on that one.
- 38:09Speaker 3: One of the, one of the, I, how did I
- 38:13Speaker 3: say this? Probably the most optimistic I've been about the
- 38:15Speaker 3: offensive line in quite some time with this, with this team.
- 38:18Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 38:19Speaker 3: I actually really liked the group. Now I know they're
- 38:21Speaker 3: going to be sealing top end talent questions, especially, you know,
- 38:26Speaker 3: with Campbell Wilson is Vera Tucker going to hit as
- 38:29Speaker 3: a free agent signing.
- 38:30Speaker 2: It's going to stay healthy.
- 38:31Speaker 3: Those are like big picture, you know, ceiling type of
- 38:36Speaker 3: questions with this team in terms of, they have five
- 38:40Speaker 3: proven starters. They have depth at, at both all three positions.
- 38:44Speaker 3: And you want to count center. This is as deep
- 38:47Speaker 3: of an offensive line room as they've had. And as
- 38:49Speaker 3: like certain of an offensive line room that they've had,
- 38:53Speaker 3: everybody has a role. They have five starters. They all
- 38:56Speaker 3: are playing positions. They should be playing. Like there's no
- 39:00Speaker 3: real questions other than can Campbell be, really Campbell specifically
- 39:06Speaker 3: make a year to leave.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Campbell make the year to leave. Can Vera Tucker stay
- 39:08Speaker 2: healthy and is Loma ready if they need him right away?
- 39:11Speaker 2: I'll feel better once Marcus Bryant's back for sure.
- 39:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Uh, but no, it's a good group and it's a
- 39:15Speaker 2: group that, you know, has an outlook for the future.
- 39:17Speaker 2: They're probably going to need new guard next year. We'll
- 39:19Speaker 2: see what happens with Michael and Wenu, but Vera Tucker,
- 39:21Speaker 2: if he stays healthy as a young guy, they have
- 39:25Speaker 2: replacement or replace potential replacements. If you want to throw
- 39:28Speaker 2: crown over in the mix along with Loma, or even
- 39:31Speaker 2: Marcus Bryant, I guess, a right tackle. So they're set
- 39:35Speaker 2: for the short, should be set for the short and
- 39:37Speaker 2: long term. I do feel good about it. Now, famous
- 39:40Speaker 2: last word saying you feel good about the offensive line,
- 39:43Speaker 2: but I said this after the draft, Evan. This is
- 39:48Speaker 2: year nine for us.
- 39:49Speaker 6: Yes.
- 39:50Speaker 2: First time professionally, we can say, I feel good about
- 39:52Speaker 2: where the Patriots are at tackle.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, big picture.
- 39:55Speaker 2: I mean, so 18, our first year, they were good
- 39:57Speaker 2: that year, but Trent Brown and Adrian Waldo were pending
- 40:01Speaker 2: free agents.
- 40:02Speaker 3: We didn't know that Trent Brown was going to be
- 40:03Speaker 3: as good as he was.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Well, no, even once he was like you, I was like, okay,
- 40:07Speaker 2: they're good for the rest of the season. But two
- 40:09Speaker 2: of those guys were free agents. And, you know, Isaiah
- 40:11Speaker 2: Wynn was coming off to kill. He's there. We didn't know.
- 40:13Speaker 2: And like, after that year, there were going to be
- 40:15Speaker 2: questions and there were maybe individual moments where they were okay,
- 40:17Speaker 2: but like big picture.
- 40:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 40:19Speaker 2: I feel good about it.
- 40:20Speaker 3: So your two leap questions aside, the tackle depth, I
- 40:25Speaker 3: think what would be interesting now with Marcus Bryant starting
- 40:27Speaker 3: the year on injured reserve, we all had our ups
- 40:32Speaker 3: and downs with Caleb Lomu this summer and didn't always
- 40:36Speaker 3: love what we saw out of him in camp and
- 40:38Speaker 3: in the preseason games. I do think that there's a
- 40:41Speaker 3: little bit of a question mark of whether or not
- 40:43Speaker 3: he is ready to back up both tackle spots right
- 40:45Speaker 3: out of the gate.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Well, that's why I, you know, you hope Marcus Bryant
- 40:49Speaker 2: comes back quickly. That can certainly be something that he does.
- 40:52Speaker 3: Because I do think that there's a world where they
- 40:54Speaker 3: have a left tackle backup and a right tackle backup
- 40:57Speaker 3: and not necessarily a third swing tackle. Because I think Lomu,
- 41:00Speaker 3: it looks, you know, his college position looks good at
- 41:03Speaker 3: left tackle. Good, you know, comfortable, I should say, at
- 41:06Speaker 3: left tackle. I'm sure that if he had to play
- 41:09Speaker 3: left tackle with the help they could give him and
- 41:10Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff, he'd be serviceable. Right tackle,
- 41:13Speaker 3: I think, is still an adjustment for him. Now, interior-wise,
- 41:17Speaker 3: assuming that Ben Brown is healthy and he's not on
- 41:19Speaker 3: injured reserve, I'm assuming he's healthy. JVR and Ben Brown
- 41:23Speaker 3: as your backup on the interior is pretty solid.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Ben Brown's backup center.
- 41:27Speaker 3: JVR.
- 41:27Speaker 2: JVR.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Did I say J?
- 41:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:30Speaker 3: GVR.
- 41:31Speaker 2: That's the hockey player.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Or J.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Yeah, JVR.
- 41:35Speaker 3: I'm going to call him by his name. I'm going
- 41:37Speaker 3: to call him Van Roen because, you know, like nicknames, GVR. Yeah,
- 41:42Speaker 3: I'm going to call.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Him Van Roen. If you say AVT around Felger, he
- 41:45Speaker 2: loses it.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Oh, okay. Well, that one, yeah.
- 41:48Speaker 2: What's the difference?
- 41:49Speaker 3: No, you're right.
- 41:49Speaker 2: It's the same thing.
- 41:50Speaker 3: You're right. You're right. Both of them.
- 41:51Speaker 2: I don't mind calling him GVR. It saves time.
- 41:53Speaker 3: The only nicknames that I'm okay with are like Pop.
- 41:56Speaker 2: So I, side rant, sports nicknames nowadays, I don't know
- 42:00Speaker 2: if we've talked about this on the show, I've talked
- 42:01Speaker 2: about it on other shows, sports nicknames, by and large,
- 42:04Speaker 2: suck now. They were so much better than we were.
- 42:07Speaker 3: That's a Bill Simmons take.
- 42:08Speaker 2: All right, well, you know what? Okay, congratulations.
- 42:10Speaker 3: Who's having a tough week.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Did he, right, did he ask his daughter's boyfriend to
- 42:14Speaker 2: give the take?
- 42:16Speaker 3: Don't come at my hero like that.
- 42:18Speaker 2: I mean, it's a great story. Even he admitted, he
- 42:20Speaker 2: was talking about the other. But initials, all due respect
- 42:25Speaker 2: to Tom Brady. Initials in a number are not a nickname.
- 42:29Speaker 2: They're initials in a number. JD5. Yeah. Who else is there?
- 42:36Speaker 3: JT, Jason Taylor.
- 42:37Speaker 2: JT, JB. I'm trying to think of some with the
- 42:40Speaker 2: numbers too. Like very few occasions LT made that enough
- 42:45Speaker 2: of a thing. But initials in a number are not.
- 42:50Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of another guy in the NFL
- 42:51Speaker 2: with a number. Um, even if it like RG three.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:55Speaker 8: Right.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Well, that's, I know, but it's still not, I know
- 42:58Speaker 2: it wasn't his Jersey number, but it's still the truth.
- 43:03Speaker 2: The answer. Big diesel. I know I'm doing all basketball ones.
- 43:06Speaker 2: I don't know why. Um, grandmama Superman.
- 43:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Well, we're still, I'm trying to think of some good
- 43:11Speaker 2: football ones. Uh, the flash or flash the bus slash
- 43:16Speaker 2: the bus. Yeah. Like the fridge, the fridge. Thank you.
- 43:21Speaker 2: The goat. The sheriff.
- 43:23Speaker 3: Well, I mean, you can't become the goat until you're
- 43:25Speaker 3: the goat. So, like, now Brady is just the goat.
- 43:28Speaker 2: You don't have to have a nickname from the beginning.
- 43:29Speaker 2: A nickname can come over time, for sure. TB12 is catchy. So,
- 43:33Speaker 2: he's another one that I may be giving exception to. Sneaky,
- 43:36Speaker 2: great nickname. It's going to be the second time we've
- 43:38Speaker 2: mentioned him on the show, oddly enough.
- 43:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 43:39Speaker 2: The Fever. Great nickname.
- 43:42Speaker 3: But what about, like, MJ?
- 43:43Speaker 7: MJ.
- 43:44Speaker 2: So a few, it becomes very iconic.
- 43:47Speaker 3: Like that one.
- 43:48Speaker 2: I mean, 90% of them are, if you want to
- 43:50Speaker 2: call the player by that, I'm not saying you can't
- 43:52Speaker 2: call the player by that. Don't call it a nickname.
- 43:55Speaker 2: That's not what it is. It's just shorthand. A nickname
- 43:57Speaker 2: is something that, so like Pop is one, but he's
- 44:01Speaker 2: had that for a while. I'm trying to think if
- 44:02Speaker 2: there's another.
- 44:02Speaker 3: Pop? I feel as though that nickname is a little different.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Or like Gonzo for Gonzalez, right?
- 44:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:10Speaker 2: I see some people call him like Agent Zero, which
- 44:12Speaker 2: is kind of already taken.
- 44:14Speaker 3: Yeah, that's Gilbert Uranus.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Right, but you're getting closer to it.
- 44:18Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 44:18Speaker 2: You're getting closer to it.
- 44:20Speaker 3: People that call him Agent Zero aren't old enough to
- 44:22Speaker 3: know who Gilbert Aranis.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Big country. Will Campbell.
- 44:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:26Speaker 2: That's a nickname.
- 44:27Speaker 7: Right.
- 44:27Speaker 2: So just personal little pet peeve. And I'm all for
- 44:30Speaker 2: coming up with more nicknames. The Manhattan Project, which a
- 44:33Speaker 2: very small number of people know who that is.
- 44:35Speaker 11: R.A.P.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Great nickname. He'll land on his feet. I want to
- 44:38Speaker 2: go to Cincinnati. I want to go to Cincinnati.
- 44:40Speaker 8: But.
- 44:40Speaker 3: You should go to Kyle Shanahan.
- 44:42Speaker 2: So just side rant. And I'm all for it. If
- 44:45Speaker 2: we want to come up with more nicknames, all for it.
- 44:47Speaker 2: But I want them to be like real nicknames. So
- 44:50Speaker 2: maybe like, I don't know, can we get one for
- 44:54Speaker 2: not a ton of options in this rookie class.
- 44:55Speaker 3: I just feel like the initials. with Barrett Tucker and
- 44:59Speaker 3: Van Roe in our new players that I, I, we
- 45:02Speaker 3: haven't really talked to very much, especially with tomorrow. Douglas,
- 45:06Speaker 3: like pop has been here for, this is going on
- 45:08Speaker 3: four years now. It's a little bit different. But anyways,
- 45:12Speaker 3: back to football, very good interior depth, especially what I
- 45:17Speaker 3: envision is Ben Brown is your backup center. I think
- 45:20Speaker 3: if a guard goes down, if Van Roe and is
- 45:22Speaker 3: ready and is up to speed with the playbook and everything, uh,
- 45:25Speaker 3: I actually think that he's a better guard than Ben
- 45:27Speaker 3: Brown is. So I actually think that they have a
- 45:29Speaker 3: backup center and a backup swing guard right now. I
- 45:32Speaker 3: think Van Roen would be the first guy up at guard.
- 45:36Speaker 3: Last thing on the offensive line, then we'll move over
- 45:37Speaker 3: to the defense. I was pleased that they were able
- 45:41Speaker 3: to keep Demetrius crown over and they saw it the
- 45:44Speaker 3: same way I did with him. I thought that he
- 45:46Speaker 3: had a really good preseason. his past protection, I think
- 45:49Speaker 3: still needs a little bit of fine tuning. Uh, but
- 45:52Speaker 3: he really was moving a lot of people in the
- 45:55Speaker 3: run game and was one of the few guys on
- 45:57Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage that his power translated in. You
- 46:01Speaker 3: saw it come up on the tape. So I thought that,
- 46:04Speaker 3: I think that Demetrius crown over has an NFL future.
- 46:07Speaker 3: I think that he's got some upside. Uh, I thought
- 46:09Speaker 3: he had upside coming out of the draft. Uh, we
- 46:12Speaker 3: talked about it at the end during the draft season, uh,
- 46:15Speaker 3: The big reason why he fell in the draft was
- 46:19Speaker 3: that people had some concerns about his football character, his makeup,
- 46:23Speaker 3: his motivation, his love for the game, that sort of stuff.
- 46:27Speaker 3: It was not ability and talent. So if he's locked
- 46:31Speaker 3: in now in this program and he's on the program
- 46:35Speaker 3: and he has motivation and all that kind of stuff,
- 46:39Speaker 3: he's got... incredible tools you know size length athleticism so
- 46:46Speaker 3: maybe it's just ends up being a swing tackle third
- 46:48Speaker 3: tackle uh behind lomu and campbell long term uh but
- 46:52Speaker 3: it would be so patriots for the the sixth round
- 46:54Speaker 3: pick to be the guy that's the starter right it
- 46:56Speaker 3: would be so patriots for that to happen jacoby myers
- 46:59Speaker 3: uh i mean there's a million of them So I'm
- 47:02Speaker 3: not ruling out crown over having a really bright future
- 47:06Speaker 3: along with Lomu. So maybe not ready to back up immediately.
- 47:09Speaker 3: Like that would be my one concern at tackle is
- 47:12Speaker 3: if knock on wood, Campbell or Moses gets her week one,
- 47:16Speaker 3: you know, it's, they might not be quite ready enough
- 47:19Speaker 3: yet for that, but in terms of long-term development and
- 47:22Speaker 3: upside net, I think both those guys have a ton
- 47:24Speaker 3: of it. So a pretty good tackle room there. A
- 47:28Speaker 3: defensive line.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Uh, Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, Corey Durden.
- 47:34Speaker 3: Who else?
- 47:34Speaker 2: It was Leonard Taylor.
- 47:36Speaker 3: The Farmer.
- 47:37Speaker 2: And Joshua Farmer. And then on the practice squad, they
- 47:39Speaker 2: have Farms.
- 47:42Speaker 3: Yep.
- 47:42Speaker 2: They have Eric Gregory. Yep. And the guy they had yesterday, Jalen,
- 47:49Speaker 2: I'm blanking on his last name.
- 47:50Speaker 3: Jalen Hunt.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Jalen Hunt.
- 47:51Speaker 3: Yeah, so when I look at this group, I feel
- 47:54Speaker 3: the same way about it as I do a lot
- 47:56Speaker 3: of position groups on defense. Great at the top.
- 47:59Speaker 6: Yep.
- 48:00Speaker 3: I actually think that it's tiered. I think Milton Williams
- 48:02Speaker 3: and Christian Barmore are in an elite tier by themselves.
- 48:05Speaker 3: I think Corey Durden's by himself in sort of that
- 48:07Speaker 3: secondary tier. And then the third tier of the backups
- 48:11Speaker 3: with Farmer and Taylor and the guys they have on
- 48:12Speaker 3: the practice squad, I have a little bit concerned about depth,
- 48:17Speaker 3: but I think I more have a concern about who's Tonga.
- 48:20Speaker 3: Do they have a wide-body run-stuffer that's going to play
- 48:23Speaker 3: the nose? I don't know yet if Durden is really
- 48:27Speaker 3: built for that.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 48:28Speaker 3: He might be more of like a two-eye, three-technique type
- 48:31Speaker 3: of player over the guard, which is what he did
- 48:34Speaker 3: more of last year.
- 48:34Speaker 7: So.
- 48:36Speaker 3: That interior run stuffer that knows tackle in their base three, four,
- 48:41Speaker 3: do they have that player? I was hoping it was
- 48:44Speaker 3: going to be Eric Gregory. Cause he's built that way.
- 48:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:46Speaker 3: The preseason was pretty streaky for him. So we'll see
- 48:49Speaker 3: if that ends up, you know, haunting them is that
- 48:51Speaker 3: ends up being something that they have to address, you know,
- 48:54Speaker 3: Daquan Jones. I don't know what happened with that visit.
- 48:57Speaker 3: I don't, he's not on the team.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 48:59Speaker 7: Right.
- 48:59Speaker 3: So obviously they don't feel like it's something they want
- 49:02Speaker 3: to go to yet. So we'll see how they end up,
- 49:05Speaker 3: you know, long term with that. But that's the one
- 49:07Speaker 3: thing I would say about this defensive line group. The
- 49:10Speaker 3: defensive tackle group is not necessarily that I mind the
- 49:13Speaker 3: players they have. I just don't know if they have
- 49:16Speaker 3: this very specific skill set of that like one. wide-bodied
- 49:20Speaker 3: run stuffing nose tackle.
- 49:23Speaker 2: Yeah i'm with you on that more concerned about their
- 49:25Speaker 2: ability to stop the run than get after the quarterback
- 49:27Speaker 2: in terms of the interior we'll talk about the edge
- 49:29Speaker 2: here in a second but i thought gregory too i
- 49:31Speaker 2: wonder if they still try to find a nose tackle
- 49:33Speaker 2: here over the first few weeks of the season Should
- 49:36Speaker 2: be able to like, yeah, those guys are out there.
- 49:38Speaker 3: How many guys times in the draft that we go
- 49:40Speaker 3: through nose tackles and half of them go day three
- 49:43Speaker 3: or undrafted because it's just did a, it's such a
- 49:46Speaker 3: situational role in the league. Now, you know, it's first down,
- 49:49Speaker 3: it's goal line. It's short yardage. Like it's not really
- 49:52Speaker 3: a three down roll by any means, unless you're like
- 49:54Speaker 3: Vita Vea.
- 49:54Speaker 2: I'll just throw out a name that I think we
- 49:57Speaker 2: both liked in the draft. Who's out there. I, there's
- 49:59Speaker 2: no informed information here. Tim Keenan didn't make the Rams.
- 50:03Speaker 2: He's on the practice squad.
- 50:04Speaker 3: Really?
- 50:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 50:06Speaker 2: Okay. So you'd have to send him to the active roster.
- 50:08Speaker 3: That's a name.
- 50:10Speaker 2: Just a guy that can sit in the middle, eat blocks,
- 50:13Speaker 2: stop the run. Yeah. He can do that.
- 50:15Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe because they're so deep on the defensive line,
- 50:18Speaker 3: he didn't make the team, I would assume.
- 50:20Speaker 2: I would assume. And again, he's on the practice squad.
- 50:22Speaker 2: I assume Big Citrus made the team, was top 100 pick.
- 50:25Speaker 2: All right.
- 50:27Speaker 3: Four on the edge, one on PUP. Are you going
- 50:31Speaker 3: to do it, or am I doing it?
- 50:33Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. No, I was just looking to see if
- 50:34Speaker 2: Dante Corleone ended up anywhere. He didn't, but he didn't
- 50:36Speaker 2: even get drafted.
- 50:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Edge. We've got Elijah Ponder, Draymond Jones. I'm doing these
- 50:42Speaker 2: in whatever order, by the way.
- 50:43Speaker 3: Okay.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Gabe Ackes, Elijah Ponder, Draymond Jones, Gabe Ackes, Quintavis Hutchins.
- 50:49Speaker 3: Yes.
- 50:49Speaker 2: Harold Langer on PUP.
- 50:51Speaker 3: Yes.
- 50:51Speaker 2: And then on the practice squad, we have Jose Ramirez.
- 50:55Speaker 3: Just Jose Ramirez.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Just Jose Ramirez?
- 50:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Oh, it's been... There were some reports that maybe Xavier Holmes.
- 51:01Speaker 3: But that's not official yet.
- 51:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:03Speaker 3: Okay. So like we said earlier in the show, I
- 51:07Speaker 3: think this is the part of the roster that I
- 51:10Speaker 3: would say is the weakest.
- 51:11Speaker 7: Yes.
- 51:12Speaker 3: However, my feelings about it is, I know they only
- 51:17Speaker 3: have four bodies on the active roster and that feels light,
- 51:20Speaker 3: but I think it's not a depth issue. It's a
- 51:23Speaker 3: top of the depth chart issue to me. If they
- 51:25Speaker 3: had a number one pass rusher, and it's a lot
- 51:27Speaker 3: like wide receiver to me, if they had an A.J.
- 51:30Speaker 3: Brown equivalent to the edge group and that guy was
- 51:33Speaker 3: the number one guy and then Draymond Jones was sort
- 51:36Speaker 3: of the number two other starter. And then Elijah ponders,
- 51:39Speaker 3: the third guy rotating in and Accus is developing behind
- 51:43Speaker 3: the scenes and, you know, getting some snaps as a rookie,
- 51:46Speaker 3: like that would be a fine edge group.
- 51:48Speaker 2: I don't necessarily, it'd be a little thin, but it
- 51:51Speaker 2: would be a lot more realistic.
- 51:52Speaker 3: I just don't think that they, I think their issues
- 51:55Speaker 3: were not solved by waiver claims in street free agents
- 51:58Speaker 3: at this point in the off.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Well, I don't, I feel like they can maybe, and
- 52:02Speaker 2: Hutchins probably here for special teams and had a good
- 52:04Speaker 2: close to summer, but like, Could you get a veteran
- 52:07Speaker 2: just so that you don't have to put as much
- 52:10Speaker 2: on Gabe Ackers' plate as he's developing?
- 52:13Speaker 3: Sure. But who is that? Like, Hasan Reddick, I think,
- 52:15Speaker 3: is still out there. Kyle Van Noy, Simon.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Yeah, somebody like that.
- 52:19Speaker 3: Or even.
- 52:20Speaker 2: I don't know, like another Elijah Ponder.
- 52:23Speaker 3: I just feel like with those guys, Redick, Benoit, some
- 52:26Speaker 3: of the names I've heard thrown out, I do want
- 52:29Speaker 3: to see the first month with Elijah Ponder and see
- 52:31Speaker 3: if there's something there. I know you haven't been crazy
- 52:33Speaker 3: about him.
- 52:35Speaker 2: Could you have another Elijah Ponder type player? Because you've
- 52:38Speaker 2: added a guy like that. Just to add a layer
- 52:40Speaker 2: of protection. There's no doubt that it's not a top
- 52:44Speaker 2: of the depth chart thing.
- 52:46Speaker 3: There's no doubt that this position group has question marks.
- 52:48Speaker 3: I just think that I heard a lot of, well,
- 52:51Speaker 3: why didn't they claim anybody?
- 52:53Speaker 6: Why?
- 52:53Speaker 3: I don't think that their problems were going to be solved.
- 52:55Speaker 2: I think some of them could have been not the
- 52:57Speaker 2: big overarching problem, but they could as insurance for Gabe Ackes.
- 53:01Speaker 3: So with Gabe Ackes, I, I, I really think that
- 53:05Speaker 3: all of Gabe Ackes' struggles in the preseason are mental.
- 53:08Speaker 3: I think he was playing slow. I think he wasn't
- 53:11Speaker 3: playing assignment sound football and, Those are big things, and
- 53:16Speaker 3: I wonder, we don't necessarily, when we do the draft,
- 53:20Speaker 3: we watch the tape, we listen to other people, we
- 53:24Speaker 3: don't necessarily get inside the guy's brain. We're not in
- 53:29Speaker 3: the meeting rooms, we're not putting the guy up on
- 53:32Speaker 3: the whiteboard. We don't really know what he is between
- 53:35Speaker 3: the ears. We know what we see when he plays
- 53:39Speaker 3: on Saturdays in college football. This might be one of
- 53:43Speaker 3: those times where we really liked what Saturday looked like,
- 53:47Speaker 3: but we didn't know.
- 53:48Speaker 2: Well, but everything we heard was she's such a football
- 53:51Speaker 2: junkie and he attacked a film room, attacked a weight room.
- 53:55Speaker 3: I wonder, and this isn't to say that there's anything
- 53:58Speaker 3: wrong with him or off the field or anything like that,
- 54:01Speaker 3: just mentally processing the game. It just doesn't look there
- 54:05Speaker 3: to me. And that would be my biggest concern. So
- 54:11Speaker 3: this is more of a you question because you pay
- 54:13Speaker 3: attention to college football. How many read options could he
- 54:17Speaker 3: have possibly seen at that level? A million, right?
- 54:20Speaker 2: Well, but the thing, and this is the adjustment, it's,
- 54:24Speaker 2: you know, he's so big, fast, strong.
- 54:27Speaker 3: Yes.
- 54:28Speaker 2: If he blew the assignment, he could catch up to,
- 54:31Speaker 2: he could get aggressive going to the quarterback, and if
- 54:34Speaker 2: he blew it, he could catch up to Purdue's running back.
- 54:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 54:37Speaker 2: He could catch up to Northwestern's running back or whatever, right?
- 54:40Speaker 2: Can't do that in the NFL. Yeah. So he saw
- 54:44Speaker 2: there were no consequences or there were fewer consequences for
- 54:47Speaker 2: being overly aggressive. So he just has to, I think,
- 54:51Speaker 2: see more learned that and figure it out. And as
- 54:54Speaker 2: he hones his instincts, we talk about these guys all
- 54:56Speaker 2: the time. He just has to see more football.
- 54:58Speaker 3: He's just chasing the ball.
- 54:59Speaker 2: He's never had to rely on his instincts. But I
- 55:02Speaker 2: think he's just I think he's a smart football player.
- 55:06Speaker 2: I just think he's never had to lean on that.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Right now he does. So, I mean, and that's not
- 55:11Speaker 2: say guarantee works out, but once he, and this is
- 55:15Speaker 2: where it goes back to, this is all stuff that
- 55:17Speaker 2: could have been figured out in the spring. Yeah. That
- 55:19Speaker 2: just wasn't right. So let's see. I don't know to
- 55:23Speaker 2: use a stupid Madden comp. So at Madden, there's these
- 55:27Speaker 2: things called dev trades. So it says how fast a
- 55:32Speaker 2: player gets better.
- 55:32Speaker 8: Right.
- 55:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 55:34Speaker 2: So when you draft a guy, his dev trade is hidden.
- 55:38Speaker 7: Okay.
- 55:38Speaker 2: And he has to play 500 snaps before he starts
- 55:40Speaker 2: getting credit for, like, developing quicker. So I usually spam
- 55:44Speaker 2: playing my rookies in the preseason so that they get
- 55:47Speaker 2: the snaps.
- 55:48Speaker 8: Smart.
- 55:48Speaker 2: But, like, if you have a backup player... Good coaching.
- 55:51Speaker 2: Thank you. If you have a backup player who's, like,
- 55:53Speaker 2: not playing in a regular season, and then if you
- 55:55Speaker 2: don't unlock it in time, like, you lose it, right?
- 55:57Speaker 7: Okay.
- 55:58Speaker 2: So... all those reps that he should have been getting
- 56:02Speaker 2: that should have helped him be a better player aren't there.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 56:05Speaker 2: So do you see the analogy I'm trying to make?
- 56:07Speaker 3: No, you're right.
- 56:08Speaker 2: And that's not to say it's automatically going to work,
- 56:10Speaker 2: but this is.
- 56:11Speaker 3: That's the grace that he gets.
- 56:12Speaker 2: Mike Smith, I wouldn't call it grace. I think it's
- 56:15Speaker 2: just the reality. Mike Smith said in the spring, he's
- 56:18Speaker 2: going to, and I don't think he said these exact words.
- 56:20Speaker 2: He used the word behind. I don't think he said
- 56:22Speaker 2: he's going to be behind, but he's talked about him
- 56:25Speaker 2: being behind. Vrabel kind of alluded to it too. He
- 56:27Speaker 2: wasn't going to be behind in the weight room. He
- 56:29Speaker 2: was still working out. In terms of learning the playbook,
- 56:33Speaker 2: he was here for rookie minicamp, so I assume he
- 56:35Speaker 2: had the playbook. So he wasn't behind in learning that.
- 56:37Speaker 2: It's the speed of the game and the speed in
- 56:41Speaker 2: which you have to make decisions in the NFL that
- 56:43Speaker 2: he had no way of working on until he got
- 56:46Speaker 2: on an NFL practice field. This is the behind. Maybe
- 56:50Speaker 2: he doesn't ever catch up. I'm just saying this is
- 56:53Speaker 2: the behind that was being referenced. and maybe he gets
- 56:58Speaker 2: a bunch of snaps under his belt because he has
- 57:00Speaker 2: to play a lot early, and we get to Halloween,
- 57:04Speaker 2: and suddenly it's like, oh, wow, it's starting to click
- 57:06Speaker 2: for him. That could happen. Maybe we get to the
- 57:08Speaker 2: end of the season, and we say it never clicked
- 57:10Speaker 2: for him.
- 57:10Speaker 3: This is the game with him right now. My concern
- 57:13Speaker 3: with it is I don't know if he can play
- 57:16Speaker 3: early on. I think it's going to be really ugly.
- 57:18Speaker 2: Well, that's a Patriots concern more than a gay back
- 57:21Speaker 2: is concerned.
- 57:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 57:22Speaker 2: But then you worry about like his confidence. Well, that's
- 57:24Speaker 2: why I'm saying, you know, what could they have done
- 57:27Speaker 2: on waivers? Just another layer of depth wouldn't have fixed everything,
- 57:32Speaker 2: but it gives you some more insurance. If Ackes can't go,
- 57:36Speaker 2: I think he can play on. If it's third and
- 57:38Speaker 2: 10 pin years back and go, I think he can
- 57:41Speaker 2: do that. That might be it right now.
- 57:44Speaker 3: Yeah, but I don't look at the team like Seattle.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's going to be tough playing against Seattle.
- 57:49Speaker 3: They're going to be outside zone heavy. They're going to
- 57:52Speaker 3: be boot heavy.
- 57:53Speaker 7: Right.
- 57:54Speaker 3: And containment on the edge. Not over-pursuing, not creating cutback lanes,
- 58:01Speaker 3: not creating, now Kenneth Walker's not there, so that's a
- 58:03Speaker 3: big part of it, but not creating those bounce-outs, not
- 58:06Speaker 3: over-pursuing the boot and giving Sam Darnold all day to
- 58:11Speaker 3: change the look. Those types of things are exactly, Seattle's
- 58:15Speaker 3: going to put him in an absolute blender.
- 58:16Speaker 2: So you're not wrong. He can't play a lot right away.
- 58:21Speaker 2: I think he, again, third and 10, third and 15.
- 58:23Speaker 3: I guess my point is, is if he can't play
- 58:25Speaker 3: a lot right away, then is it in practice that
- 58:28Speaker 3: he's getting these looks? Like, how are we going to,
- 58:30Speaker 3: how is he going to catch up?
- 58:32Speaker 2: Oh, I get what you're saying.
- 58:32Speaker 3: And the reason why I bring this up is because
- 58:35Speaker 3: we've not always the same circumstances. It's usually injury, but
- 58:40Speaker 3: how many times have we seen a rookie player get
- 58:43Speaker 3: hurt in training camp, miss three weeks of training camp.
- 58:46Speaker 2: And never catch up and the trains moving at.
- 58:48Speaker 3: Full speed and they can't catch, they can't jump on
- 58:50Speaker 3: the train.
- 58:51Speaker 2: Look, that's the concern in it. That is the, that's
- 58:54Speaker 2: what he missed in the spring. Yeah, that is fair.
- 58:57Speaker 3: Um, Really quickly before we move on.
- 58:59Speaker 2: Okay, I have one more edge thing for you.
- 59:00Speaker 3: Okay. We each have one more. Yeah. On Akis, I
- 59:03Speaker 3: wonder if they can simplify his role. Just set the edge...
- 59:09Speaker 3: That's your first step, right? Just set the edge. Don't
- 59:13Speaker 3: chase the ball. Don't get your eyes caught inside. Just
- 59:16Speaker 3: set the edge. Then once you declare runner pass, just,
- 59:21Speaker 3: just press the pocket, just bull rush, right? Just transition
- 59:24Speaker 3: into a bull rush, set the edge, transition into a
- 59:26Speaker 3: bull rush. Like if he can do that on first
- 59:28Speaker 3: and second down, I think that maybe he can play.
- 59:31Speaker 3: I think right now what's happening is, is on first
- 59:33Speaker 3: and second down, he's getting his eyes in the wrong
- 59:36Speaker 3: places and he's just chasing the football and he's getting
- 59:38Speaker 3: baited out of things. Whereas if he's just disciplined out
- 59:41Speaker 3: on the edge, it might not be as flashy. He
- 59:43Speaker 3: may not get as many plays on the ball that
- 59:45Speaker 3: he wants right out of the gate, but he's playable.
- 59:48Speaker 2: The hard thing is a player who's aggressiveness and whose
- 59:54Speaker 2: motor is his strength. How do you, And he's not
- 59:59Speaker 2: the only player that this question's been asked about. How
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: do you get him to play more in control without
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: totally taking away part of what you like about him? Yeah.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: And there's no easy answer to that.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: One more question on him, then you can give your
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: last point. Do they play him early in the season
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: because they need Gabe Ackes to work long-term, and that's
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: what the best interest of the long-term is? Because you
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: have the Seahawks, the Steelers, the Jags, the Bills.
- 1:00:26Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: That's a tough stretch.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: Because they're important games.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: They're important games. So not saying he's going to single-handedly
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: lose games for you or anything, but if you can't start.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: Do they play him to force the development?
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: You can't... Starting 1-3 in September is going to be
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: tougher to dig out of this year than it would
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: have been in.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: What was the or? Or was that the whole question?
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: Or do you just say he's not ready and you
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: can't play him?
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Who else plays?
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: So you'd have.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: You'd have to play Hutchins, I guess, at that point.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: And that's what I'm talking about where they could have
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: added somebody else. Sure. Along those lines, you talk about
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: him working out in the long term. I'm just going
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: to throw some names at you. Okay. Because it is
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: the first week of college football. Just put these in
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: the back of your brain.
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Yonce Pierre, Alabama. Mateo Uyungle, Oregon.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: I know that one.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Yeah, he could have come out last year. Damon Wilson, Miami.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: I might butcher this one. I've got to learn this one.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Bobacar Traore, Notre Dame.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: Anto Saka, Texas A & M. Cleve Lubin, Louisville. John
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: Henry Daly, Michigan.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: Ed Drescher is that mid to late round. Those are
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: the top guys are going to be long.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: So the top guys are Dylan Stewart. And what's the
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: guy's name in Texas? Geez. Well, because I'm not looking
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: at those guys for them.
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: Dylan Stewart's stud.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: Dylan Stewart's top five pick. They're saying that the Texas
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: guy could go first.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: Really?
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: Like before him, not first overall, but Colin Simmons, geez.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: I think Pierre is the consensus third or fourth guy.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: So Pierre and Uyungle and maybe Wilson are like... Pierre
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: and Uyungle are projected first round picks. Wilson's one of
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: those top 40 guys. the others are like day two,
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: maybe early day three guys, but, and that's not the
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: only names we'll talk about. It's not the only names
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: to know. And maybe some of them end up sucking
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: their players to watch at this point, but just, just
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: some names to know.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: Uh, once we finished this and we hit the break
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: after the break, I do have a college football thought.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: Oh, where? Okay.
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: Uh, linebacker.
- 1:02:33Speaker 7: Yup.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: It is a Robert Spillane.
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: This one's tough because there's some new guys.
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: I know Robert Spillane. Yeah. Christian Ellis.
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: Yup.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: Named the OB eyes or.
- 1:02:41Speaker 7: Yup.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: Uh, Darius Moussa.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: Moussa.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: I asked about CSA. Moussa. And then, oh, I keep
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: forgetting the name of the guy they signed yesterday.
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: Eric Hunter.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Eric Hunter. I keep wanting to say Franklin.
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: Khalil Jacobs is on injured reserve.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: He's on injured reserve.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: KJ Britt to the practice squad.
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: Yeah, this is another group that behind Ellis and Spillane,
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: they just keep churning over. They keep looking for diamonds
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: in the rough, waiver claims. who right now, uh, when
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: they go out there in Seattle and week one in
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: a week from today, actually, uh, who's the third linebacker.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: It might have to be. Well, so no. So I
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: talked to Moose a little bit yesterday, played for Zach
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: core and Shane Bowen in New York. He said that
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: he there's familiarity with the playbook and the terminology. And
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: he was just kind of refreshing himself at this point,
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: said he felt comfortable in the meetings, big picture. It's
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: probably him. You asked specifically about Seattle. The question is,
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: has he gotten here in time? I think by the
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: time the season gets rolling, like, Moussaou is their third linebacker,
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: and he's started games for the Giants, and he's played
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: a good amount, and I'm not saying he's your ideal
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: third linebacker, but I expect a little more from him
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: than the average waiver claim. Big picture for the season,
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: I would say. I think the fact he's been in
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: the defense, he's got, like, 20-something NFL starts under his belt.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:57Speaker 7: So.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: What I saw last year was kind of rough, but
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: the Giants run defense and team by the end of
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: the season had to let go of the rope.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: Yeah, being around better players, I don't want to, I'm
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: not saying he should start, but usually waiver claim doesn't
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: know the playbook.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: You know, a guy that hasn't played a lot. As
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: far as waiver claims go, I'm saying, I think they
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: did well with Moussa. He's also going to play a
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: ton in the kicking game. All three of those guys
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: are mainly special teams players.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: I just wonder if just for the short term, KJ
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: Britt elevated from the practice squad.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: It could be that, too.
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: Makes a lot of sense to me.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: We're running out of practice squad elevations. Well, Wisnowski's going
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: to have to be one of them. Wisnowski's going to
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: be one. If Henderson's banged up, I think Larrison has
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: to be the other.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: A running back?
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: I think specifically Larrison.
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: So... That's the big thing to me is I think
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: early on September, early on in the season, it makes
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: the most sense to elevate KJ Britt. That's fair. Especially
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: just because, A, familiarity, experience in the league, special teams
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: of familiarity and experience. I just think that that's where
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: I would go with that. All right, cornerbacks.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Cornerbacks. Gonzalez, David, Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, Marcus Jones, Karan Prunty,
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: Charles Woods, Channing Canna, Kendall Vildor, I believe, is the
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: only one on the practice squad?
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: That is correct.
- 1:05:20Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: As of right now.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: And that should be it, right?
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: So another spot where they prioritized, and I should have
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: said this at linebacker, they prioritized the rookies, the undrafted guys,
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: the guys that were going to go on waivers. over
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: the vested veterans, knowing that Kendall Vildor was probably going
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: to just sign back to the practice squad. They wanted
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: to not expose Cleo Jacobs and, uh, not the OBIs
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: or the waivers. So that was sort of where they
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: went all over the roster. You know, Channing Canada makes
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: the team over Kendall Vildor, right? Because Channing Canada has
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: to go on waivers and Kendall Vildor doesn't.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Well, I also think there's an element of, Canada can
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: play the slot. None of their other depth corners can
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: really do that.
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: So I think they try. They've tried Charles Woods. It's
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: been rough, but they've tried Charles Woods in the slot.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: He's never really played the slot before.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: Channing Canada can play special teams. He can play Gunner.
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: I don't know how much Gunner experience Kendall Vildor has
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: without Brandon Schooler for the first at least month of
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: the season. That's notable. My other thing about corner is.
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: I wonder if they settled on with Charles woods. This
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: was a reliable backup for us in 2025 special teams player,
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: fourth corner, third corner boundary corner. He had a bad summer.
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: We can call it what it is, but he played
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: fine in NFL games last year.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: So how much are we going to say? Oh, he had,
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: he was bad in practice. Maybe they were getting him
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: some reps in the slot and doing some different things
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: with him than what he's done in the past. I
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: just think that they ultimately decided that 2025 tape in
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: regular season, real football games was more important than some
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: of the ups and downs in the preseason and in
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: practice this year.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: And I think along those lines, it's not like anybody
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: else from that group had a great camp either. Great
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: summer either. So maybe it goes to the incumbent.
- 1:07:07Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: All right. Surprise level of Canada being on this team.
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: Cause I'm pretty surprised by that.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: It shouldn't have been as much of a surprise. It was,
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: I'm the one that always says they're giving us the answers,
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: regardless of what we think performance. I do remember a
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: couple of years ago, we all thought a lot, not
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: last year, A few years ago, like, they claimed Jelani
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: Tavai midseason. He was here. He wasn't very good. Everybody
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: kind of wrote him off. And then Belichick went on SiriusXM,
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: and he was like, oh, he's going to be a
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: big part of what we do. Yeah. And people still
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: had Tavai off the rocks. He was like, what are
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: you talking about? He hasn't been good. It's like, no,
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: he's telling us.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Channing Canna was out there a lot this summer.
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: He was out there.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Maybe we thought it was, you know, well, Gonzalez is
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: banged up, and all these corners are banged up, and
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: he's out there because they need a body or whatever.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: They were using him like a player was going to
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: make the roster. Looking back on it, I was surprised
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: in the moment. Looking back on it, should have seen
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: it coming. That's a miss from me. That's a miss
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: from us. They used him like a roster player. We
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: should have figured that out.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: I don't know. I didn't see it defensively.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: Now, whether or not he played up to it, whether
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: or not he played up to it is another question. Yeah.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: Him making the roster, yes or no, period, we should
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: have seen coming. He's not the first guy.
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: That Channing Canada, Karan Prunty. No, excuse me. Channing Canada,
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: Tanner Arkin.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: Are two UDFAs that made the roster because there's roles
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: for them that I don't know if they necessarily fully earned.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: I think.
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: With their performance.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: I think Arkin did enough to earn a roster spot.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: I don't think he did enough to be beyond replacement.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: Like if there were some better veteran tight ends available.
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: Sure.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: Tanner Arkin's a 53 roster player. Now, he might be 50-51, 52-53.
- 1:08:54Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: But I think he's a 53-man rosterable player.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: I think it's... blocker, he is.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: He's your third tight end.
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: And I'm sure he is on field goal protection and
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: Tanner Arkin makes sense on the 53.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: I feel similarly with Karan Prunty as I do with
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: Demetrius crown over, maybe not quite as high project player.
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: I'm pretty high on crown over. Maybe that's just because
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: it's an offensive line thing. And I, I nerd out
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: about that kind of stuff, but I feel the same
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: way about Karan Prunty, you know, height, weight, speed guy.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: Good lane covered pretty well in the preseason. If you
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: want to take out the Cleveland game, which I'm just,
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: going to decide for the take that i'm going to
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: take out okay uh... not great in cleveland either but
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: other than that i thought that they he had a
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: good summer yeah he flashed his ability especially to play
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: the ball down the field with that size and length
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: and carry vertical routes If you had to put him
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: in a boundary corner role where all he's got to
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: do is cover a receiver that runs the vertical route
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: tree and make sure he doesn't get high pointed down
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: the field on a deep ball, I think that he
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: has potential to be able to do that pretty soon.
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: So I'm pretty high on Karan Pranti too as a
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: developmental height, weight, speed kind of guy.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: The only reason I'm not more into that theory, and
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: I like Pranti, the only reason I'm more into that
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: theory is because he's 24 and usually those guys... Or younger,
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: so they have more time to grow. But Crownover's 25,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: and I'm into the idea of him being a developmental player.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: So maybe I have to be all or nothing. Well,
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: Crownover switched positions. That might be part of it. But
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: with Prunty, I just, I don't know. I like the player.
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: I think that they got a guy with some potential there. Safety.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: Safety. We have Kevin Byard, Craig Woodson, Jalen Reed, and
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: Del Pettis, Brennan Schooler on NFI.
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: Did they bring it? Oh, they brought Mike Brown back
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: on the practice squad. That's it, right? Yep.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: So the question that I.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: So I got all, but we're almost done.
- 1:10:52Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: You know I'm going to get the other ones. I
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: got all but two.
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: You know I'm going to get the special teams.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: So who did I miss? I missed... Kyle Williams. Kyle
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: Williams and the linebacker from Detroit, whose name is.
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: Eric Hunter.
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: And Eric Hunter. I actually got a breakfast ball on
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: Kyle Williams.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: So, at safety, my biggest takeaway from this safety group
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: was that The John Saunders hype, they didn't believe it.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: Clearly, he's not even back on the practice squad.
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: Not even back on the practice squad. The guy that
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: led the team in interceptions in training camp has not
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: even returned to the practice. Now, maybe it's because he
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: has better offers elsewhere. Who knows? You have no idea.
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: But I thought that John Saunders really made a push.
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: I thought that he started to really show up both
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: in the games and in practice. I thought his preseason tape,
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: the whole tape in Cleveland on defense was terrible. So
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: I just kind of like all those guys did not
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: play well. So if we're talking about equal footing on
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: all those players and we just accept the fact that
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: everybody that took the field on defense in Cleveland did
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: not play well, then I kind of absolve everybody of
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: it in a way or wash away at all. John Saunders,
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: even though it was a lot against backups, there's no
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: doubt about that. You know, Cole Payton and the joint
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: practice against the Eagles is the fourth quarterback or whatever.
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: I just, the bar, the on-ball production was what it
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: was like. He had six picks. Seven picks in training
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: camp doesn't even sniff a practice squad spot. I was
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: surprised that they never took the cheese on it. Like
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: we did.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: I did.
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: Certainly speaking for myself, I, I, They never seemed to
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: move him up the depth chart. He didn't make the roster.
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: He didn't make the practice squad. It was an interesting one.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: That's the inverse of Channing Canada. They were telling us
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: with their actions what they thought of him. And we
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: probably should have seen that coming more.
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: Two weeks ago, Paul told me, but he's not... Do
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: you think they've moved him up the depth chart? And
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: I was like, no, I don't. He's been ripping with
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: the threes and the twos, maybe, whoever's practicing. He's been dirty.
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: Safety with the twos.
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: That was before they had Jalen Reed. If they don't
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: trade for Jalen Reed, I think he's here.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: He's not even on the practice squad.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: I know, but.
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: Maybe that's just opportunity elsewhere. You know, that could be
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: something different.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: I also think they like Mike Brown. Not that Mike
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Brown had a good camp. I think he just went
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: to Vrabel's guys like a culture guy.
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: I don't think it was John Saunders. Like, it could
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: be John Saunders here, Mike Brown on the practice squad.
- 1:13:16Speaker 7: On the roster.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: You get what I'm saying?
- 1:13:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: Special teams. Let's wrap this up.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: Andy Borgalis, Bryce Beringer, Julian Ashby, and Mitch Wisniewski on
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: the practice squad.
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: So Beringer is on IR. I put Schooler in this category. Yeah,
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: I don't know why they don't have a punter. So
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: he's on NFI.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: I still got all the names.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: Why Mitch Wisniewski over Matt Hack, who was maybe the
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: player of the game for the Patriots.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: You know what? I meant to ask for Able. I'm
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: actually going to ask him that tomorrow. Not directly that,
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: but along those lines. I don't know. Familiarity. Wisniewski, his
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: career has been a better punter. Matt Hack. hawk actually
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: had a good year last year with the cardinals um
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: i thought he hit the ball well in that preseason
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: game but again experience the the real interesting thing here
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: and matt hawk might not be done so you put
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: beringer on ir that's four weeks yes they don't have
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: a punter on the roster right now now maybe that
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: changes before the start of the season but you can
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: elevate mitch wischnowski for three games yes that fourth game
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: if you do three off the rip is the bills game,
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: which is an important game. Ideally, they're not punting in
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: that game, but let's be honest. They probably want to
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: win it.
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: They're not going to.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: Um, so you have one other game in there, whether
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: it's the bills game or they say, which now skis
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: the better option. So we're going to save him for
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: the bills game. And maybe you have the other guy
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: do the Steelers game, right? Are they going to bring
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: another punter in to do that fourth game? Are they
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: going to add Wisnowski to the roster for a week? Now,
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: the theory, if you're bringing, and this is assuming that
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: Beringer's only going to miss four weeks, I believe was
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: described as a minor injury at the time.
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: So, we'll see. But are they, let's just put this,
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: however many games he misses. Are they going to rotate
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: punters through the practice squad and elevate guys? Right now,
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: they would need at least two. Or at some point,
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: is the roster spot going to open up? You will
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: need a roster spot for Beringer anyway. So at a
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: certain point, you could say, all right, we're going to
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: add Wisnowski to the roster for the Bills game and
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: then cut him and bring back Behringer the week after
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: because we have to open that spot up either way.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: So there are some gymnastics they're going to have to
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: do here.
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: But I do wonder if there is a point where
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: it's Wisnowski for three games, he gets cut, and we
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: see Matt Hawk or Jamie Gillen or somebody come in
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: here for a week, handle that game as an elevation.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: and then it goes back to Barringer, assuming he missed
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: four weeks. If it's more, it probably makes more sense
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: to add somebody to the roster because the other thing
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: is this guy's the holder. So you've got to develop
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: that chemistry with Ashby and Borgala. So it'll be interesting
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: to see how they manage this.
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: That's exactly how the second question I had is that
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: you only have three elevations and he needs to.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Miss at least four games with Barringer.
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: So I would assume, and not that this is, they're
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: wishing this by any means, but for.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: Some, somebody gets hurt. He's going to get, there's going
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: to be an injury.
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: There's going to be a player that they feel comfortable
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: cutting or something like that. Or, you know, two weeks
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: from now that maybe they don't want to move on
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: from today. And, and maybe which now ski ends up
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: on the active roster at that point. So this might
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: be a, you're coming on the active roster once the
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: spot opens up sort of thing. So yeah, I, that,
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: that is an interesting little, you know, detail there. You
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: only have three of them.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: It'll be fun to manage each week here.
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: It's also, if you're automatically elevating the punter, right, then
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: you're losing some flexibility there too, to elevate two guys,
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: position players.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: I don't put as much stock into that just because
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: it's true, but, And maybe there's some semantics here.
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: I just look at the way that they frame the roster,
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: the way that all these young players are on this team.
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: They have the fifth youngest 53-man roster in the league
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: right now. All these young players that are on the team,
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: KJ Britt, does he actually have a role on game day,
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: but he's on the practice squad? Kendall Vildor, does he
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: actually have a role on game day? Mike Brown, does
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: he actually have a role? All these different types of guys,
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: they might be looking at it and saying, We just
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: wanted to keep working with these young guys. But we're
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: actually going to give the game day roles to the
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: practice squad guys. But then you need the elevators in
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: order to do that.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: It might be the flip side of that, though. Because
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: those practice squad elevations are usually for guys that play
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: on special teams.
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: The young guys can do that. The question is more,
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: if you lose a corner for three games, would you
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: rather have Karan Prunter or Kendall Vildor? And then you
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: just add that guy to the roster. So... it's a punter,
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: still a special team spot, right? You know, if you're
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: not using it on which the guys they'd be elevating,
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: I think would be Channing Canada or Khalil Jacobs, if
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: he's healthy or Quran Pronte to play special teams. Those
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: guys can now do that from the active roster. These guys,
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: they claim, right?
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: What if Henderson is banged up week one? And you
- 1:18:08Speaker 3: need Larrison or you need Haskins or something. So that's
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: one spot. I feel like it would be more, I
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: don't know, it just feels more flexible. I understand why
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: they're doing it.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: What is Vildor? I get what you're saying. So you
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: have Vildor on game day. Channing Canada doesn't dress, so
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: you get Vildor. But how much is Vildor as the
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: sixth corner really going to play on defense?
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: Maybe he's really not the sixth corner. Is my point.
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: Who's he ahead of, though?
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: Well, he's probably not ahead of Charles Woods.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: Right. He's the fifth guy. Right.
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: But he definitely could be technically still ahead of Ponte
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: in Canada.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: But I think you get burned for that one week
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: while those guys play special teams. I'm not necessarily.
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: Talking about this. for week one. I'm more talking about
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: it if you have to keep recycling through punters with
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: elevations on the practice squad. Like if Beringer's injury lingers
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: and it ends up being longer than expected.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: I mean, I think eventually they'll add one to the roster.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: If it's that long, they'll add one to it. Because
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: you can only... They're not going to.
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Let's say he misses six games. you're going to have
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: two punters in six weeks. And then if it becomes
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: a seventh, now you're on your third punter, your third holder.
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: Like if it, if it is an extended absence like that,
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: they'll have that, that problem is going to take care
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: of itself. Cause either it's not an extended absence and
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: barrier comes back on the roster. And now you have
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: your spots back or barrier, like does miss half the
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: season or more like you're alluding to at that point,
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: I would.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: Think they just put a puncher on the roster. I
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: know that he is or isn't.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: No, I know.
- 1:19:34Speaker 7: I know.
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: So I see what you're saying. Now you're talking more
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: like you can't be doing this thing all season.
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: Correct.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: If he's going to miss that much time, they have
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: to put a punter on the roster. Because you just need...
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: A week or two, not a big deal.
- 1:19:47Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: You can't just be elevate. You can't have a new...
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: It's more about holder than punter. Right. You can't have
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: a new holder every three weeks, which is what they'd
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: have to do. Yeah.
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: All right. Let's take a quick break. When we come back,

- 1:23:10Speaker 3: I got a couple of, I got a college football thought.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: Let's do it.
- 1:23:14Speaker 3: I got a music thought. As well.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: You don't listen to music.
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: You get on me for not listening to music. Every
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: once in a while, we talk about this. Have you
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: seen this Kelly Clarkson clip that has gone viral?
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: Which one?
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: Kelly Clarkson does this thing on her show that I
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: guess is over now.
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: Oh, is this the one that doesn't kill you, makes
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: you stronger, and Anne Hathaway sings it instead?
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: No, this is not that. That was years ago. She
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: does covers of popular songs.
- 1:23:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:23:45Speaker 3: And she did the K-pop song Golden.
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: Okay. She did the cover of that song. Apparently, I
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: don't know anything about music. I'm just telling you what
- 1:23:55Speaker 3: I read.
- 1:23:56Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: Apparently, there is a high note in that song that
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: a human voice should not be able to hit.
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:24:05Speaker 3: And Kelly Clarkson, in a live performance, sang at that
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: octave for, like, I got.
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: To check that out. I believe it. She's very talented.
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: She's a great singer.
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: She's got a great voice. I believe that.
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: Yeah, and I listen to it, and I'm not a
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: music guy, as you know, and I was pretty blown away.
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: For me to be blown away. I'll check that out, yeah.
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: It's kind of like your desk thing.
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: Tiny desk?
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: Tiny desk.
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: I don't think it's like tiny desk, but okay.
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: It's kind of like that.
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: The whole point of Tiny Desk is it's supposed to
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: be acoustic. Not everybody does it acoustic.
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: This isn't acoustic, but it's like she's covering popular songs.
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: She's just a really good singer.
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: Okay, that's not really what Tiny Desk is, but okay.
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: Something like that.
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: Kevin, that's not what Tiny Desk is.
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: I'm going to say it's kind of like Tiny Desk.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: Evan saw somebody playing music live and said, oh, it's
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: like Tiny Desk.
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: It's playing music on TV.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: Evan's going to go to the concert here this weekend
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: and be like, oh, it's just like Tiny Desk. Yes,
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: it's just 68,000 people in the stadium. It's just like
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: Tiny Desk.
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: I try to do a music thing one time.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: No, no, yeah, I should encourage it. That's fine.
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: Seriously, my goodness. College football.
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: I did watch North Carolina TCU.
- 1:25:16Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: I watched a little bit of that game. That was...
- 1:25:19Speaker 3: The most post-Brady Bill Belichick win of all time.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: So I think the big question is, is North Carolina
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: turning a corner or is this just like a one-off?
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: Aside from the fact that TCU is in shambles and
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: that whole program is like up in smoke.
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: Yeah, they might not hit with the quarterback.
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: The locker room is like they're literally fighting in the
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: locker room. This is a story. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: One of their players got like, yeah.
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: They literally are fighting. There's infighting in the locker room
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: going on right now at TCU. And I have seen
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: Bill Belichick, maybe not a bunch of times, but I've
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: seen post-Brady Bill Belichick teams win 15 to 10 rock fights.
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: You know, the 2022 Patriots, the 23 Patriots, that's how
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: they won games, 15 to 10. So this is not,
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: to me, that is how exactly it looks when Bill
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: Belichick wins a football game now. It's a rock fight,
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: defensive type of game. They'll win on some, you know,
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: getting the other team to jump offside, something like that.
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: So I'm not ready to say that they turned a corner,
- 1:26:24Speaker 3: but nice little win for Bill.
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: They're built for it better now than they were last year. So,
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: you know, they have better defense. I got a bit,
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: you know, some good running back. I got a kid
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: from LSU in the portal running back. That was a
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: good win. In fighting aside, that TCU team is supposed
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: to be good this year.
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: I believe they received votes in the poll.
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: So a lot of it, their quarterback, Jane Craig. Harvard transfer.
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: Set up some passing records at Harvard.
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: Is that North Carolina's quarterback?
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: No, TCU's.
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: I thought North Carolina's quarterback was the Harvard transfer.
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: No, he transferred from.
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: I was trying to follow. He was at a couple schools.
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: It was constant at one point. It was on in
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: the background. The roster cuts were going on. There was
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: a lot going on.
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: TCU's, he's one of the top FCS quarterbacks last year.
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: It was seen as a good get for TCU in
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: the portal because they lost Hoover to Indiana.
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: So there was a lot of hype for this kid.
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: And now we know Bill Belichick against the young quarterback, right?
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: Belichick threw the kitchen sink at him. So we'll see
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: what he does moving on. It wasn't the easiest day
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: to throw the ball, but a lot of the TCU hype,
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: and there was TCU hype, was based on the idea
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: that everybody's trying to find the next Trinidad Chambliss. The
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: guy that comes from the lower level and was just overlooked.
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: I think BC's quarterback this year came from detail. Everybody's
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: trying to find the next Trinidad Chambliss. The guy that
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: comes from the lower level that was just overlooked for
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: whatever reason and just shows up and proves he belongs.
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: I am a big Trinidad Chambliss guy, by the way.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: I don't know your thoughts on him, but Jaden Craig
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: was one of those guys. We do that in the NFL, right?
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: After Brock Bowers had the big year, every rookie tight
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: end the next year was, who's this year's Brock Bowers?
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: There's people doing this year. Who's this year's Drake May, right?
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: Sure.
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: So who's the next Trinidad Chambliss is one of those
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: things in college football. And TCU's quarterback was on that list.
- 1:28:09Speaker 3: So it was a good little win for North Carolina.
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: Like I said, I think that everybody just... either blocks
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: out Bill Belichick's wins from the last handful of years
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: and acts like they didn't happen because of how tumultuous
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: it's been for him, how bumpy it's been for him,
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: but he's won a lot of 15-10 rock fights. They were, what,
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: 8-9 in 2022 with 8 15-10 rock fight wins. So
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: until they start to actually....
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: They didn't win a game where the opponent scored more
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: than 24 points?
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: Yeah, something like that.
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: For a handful of years?
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: Until his offenses start putting up some points, it's hard
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: to kind of buy fully in and like... But you
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: know what?
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: The ACC is not good. You can win games like that.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: And they have a pretty easy schedule around that.
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: They could compete in the ACC, but that's not really competing.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: All you got to do is get in that conference
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: championship game, man. If you can win that.
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: The conference champion last year didn't go to the playoff.
- 1:29:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: Well, yeah. Yeah. Okay, fair.
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: If Virginia had won the conference, then maybe they would have.
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: They would have, yeah. Well, this is your whole thing.
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: You think that the conference champion should have gone. You
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: think Duke should have gone.
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: No, my whole thing is that I think it's 12
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: teams still, right? The best 12 teams need to go
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: to the playoff.
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: Yeah, after award-winning your conference. Not Tulane. Or you have
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: to get rid of the conference championship game.
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: Not James Madison.
- 1:29:26Speaker 6: No.
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: My whole thing is that if you put Tulane or
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: James Madison on the field with Notre Dame, that is
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: a Notre Dame blowout. Notre Dame wins by four touchdowns.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: Should they get rid of the 116 game in March Madness?
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: Or should they get rid of the auto bids in
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: March Madness?
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: It's different, though, because there's 65 teams that make it
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: in March Madness. We're only talking about 12 teams that
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: are making it.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: Well, you're talking about fewer conferences, fewer teams overall.
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: I just want the best 12 teams. I don't care
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: what conference they play in. I don't care anything else.
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: I just want, if we put these teams head-to-head on
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: a football field, we're the best 12. That's fine.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: It needs to be the best 12 teams on film,
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: not the best 12 teams on paper. Would you agree
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: to that?
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: Sure.
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: Like, the results have to matter.
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: But can we agree that Notre Dame was a better
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: football team last year than Tulane and James Madison? And
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: I'm saying Notre Dame not because I'm a big Notre
- 1:30:17Speaker 3: Dame guy, but that's the team that really got snubbed here.
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: Well, but then you get into, like, Notre Dame. That's
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: a bad example of what you're arguing. I don't disagree
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: with what you're arguing in theory. There's a few reasons
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: why that's not a good example. Notre Dame's a weird
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: one because they get treated like a Power 5 team
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: that doesn't have to play a Power 5 schedule. There's
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: a separate issue.
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: Specifically with Notre Dame.
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: The argument you're making, and it was with four teams,
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: it's the Florida State team a few years ago.
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: Because their quarterback got hurt.
- 1:30:46Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: I'm talking about eye test talent on the field. We
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: know that Notre Dame is a better football team than Tulane.
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: So talent on the field, but also results. I'll give
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: you this.
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: But I'm not talking about Notre Dame versus Miami. I'm
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: fine getting rid of the auto bids. The argument you're
- 1:31:02Speaker 3: making usually goes down the road of that.
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm fine getting rid of the auto bids, but
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: winning the games has to matter. I don't want to hear,
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: and you've made this argument before. Yeah. Well, this is
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: the team that has the roster talent. I don't care
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: that they lost two bad games during the year. I
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: want to know that hat. Cause then the regular season
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: doesn't mean anything.
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: Well, it does. Like you can't have five losses. Like
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: do you know if.
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: You lose to Northern Illinois in September, that should be
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: a massive red mark on your resume. No offense to
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: Northern Illinois.
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: It is, but I don't think that losing to Northern
- 1:31:32Speaker 3: Illinois in September should eliminate you from the college football playoff.
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: If you lose to App State and don't beat another
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: quality team, but you finish 11-1, if there's like a
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: 12-2 team that went through a gauntlet, or I have
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: not 12, 10 and two team that went through a
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: goblet and has some real quality wins in those losses
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: or maybe conference games. I did the 10 and two
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: team should be in over the 11 and one team
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: that didn't play anybody.
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: But it would, the problem that I had with it,
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: and maybe this is the auto bids thing.
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: The problem that I had with it was that the
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: conversation became the wrong conversation. It became Notre Dame versus Miami.
- 1:32:13Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:32:14Speaker 3: And as it turns out, Miami made the college football
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: championship so that they picked correctly by putting Miami in.
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: But really, the argument should have been Notre Dame versus
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: James Madison.
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: So that's the auto-biz. At first, it was.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: At least one group of five team had to get in.
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: One group of five champion had to get in. Then
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: they changed it to, it's just the five highest ranked
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: conference champions, but everybody in the ACC kept getting upset.
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: So I think it was the Sun Belt and the
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: American champions, whoever the other team was, were higher ranked
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: than the ACC championship. So you still missed that. a
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: power for that was a total fluke. By the way,
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: that would, that would not happen once again in a
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: thousand years.
- 1:32:55Speaker 3: I want the 12 best.
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: So now this is what they're going to do. It's
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: just going to be the 12 highest rated teams. The
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: only caveat is in watching you burning in this year.
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: Now the caveat is all power for champions have to
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: make it. So you're going.
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: To get a ball, always have to make this so
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: complicated because.
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: They don't want to get rid of the conference championship games.
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: And you can't have a conference championship games if they
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: don't mean anything. Okay. So I guess, but like, like
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: Miami wasn't even in there. Right. Exactly. Now you're going
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: to get that Duke team. So instead of Tulane, you're
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: going to get that Duke team. Just give me the
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: 12 better. Well, the Duke team's better.
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: Yeah. They're better.
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: And like, I like, well, they're going to, they're going
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: to go to, they're going to go to 16 and
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: then you're not going to have to worry about it.
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: I just, they're going to go to 16.
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: I am a casual college football fan and I'm a
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: draft fan. Okay. Like I'm a draft Nick that I
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: fully admit that I am a casual college football fan.
- 1:33:46Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: But I do enjoy the college football playoff. I do
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: want to watch the college football playoff. I do not
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: want to watch Oregon beat James Madison by six touchdowns.
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: That's not entertaining. This gets said about March Madness sometimes.
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: I disagree. But a lot of people say, like, March Madness,
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: outside of a handful of games, it's that second round
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: where you really start getting to the good stuff. It's
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: the second round. Like you're getting that in the second round,
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: but you're, you're going to get your way. It doesn't
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: matter what I want. You're going to get your way.
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: So as long as the ACC can put forward a
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: representative champion, you're going to be fine. All right.
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: I got a bunch of emails. So let's get to
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: some of these. I've got a couple of Kyle Williams questions.
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: This is from Matt in Wichita. All I have heard
- 1:34:27Speaker 3: this preseason is that Kyle Williams out there longer than
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: the other wide receivers to add some more tools to
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: his toolbox and Why is it then that he continues
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: to keep getting go routes and then is off the
- 1:34:38Speaker 3: field the next drive? So basically he's saying they don't
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: give him enough playing time to actually work on the
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: other things that he has to work on. I would
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: say that slight pushback on some of the one-trick pony stuff...
- 1:34:52Speaker 3: I actually think he has shown some intermediate route running,
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: not in the sense of over the middles and slants
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: and crossing routes and things like that. He's running a
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: pretty good comeback at this point. He's able to get
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: off the line, get the corner runoff at the top
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: of the route, and then stop. A lot of people
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: call it a nine-stop comeback, whatever you want to call it.
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: He had the.
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: one before halftime against the Colts. I think that was
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: a 25 yard game where he ran off the corner,
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: stopped down, caught the ball in front of the corner,
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: made a miss, went up the sideline. He also caught
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: a curl in the Cleveland game that for a first
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: down on a third down play that was similar, run
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: the corner off, sit down in front of him, catch
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: the ball over the sticks. So he might not have
- 1:35:39Speaker 3: the in breaking route yet. I think that's what we're
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: looking for. A slant, a crossing route. something like that,
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: breaking into the middle of the field. But I have
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: seen some progress in terms of those comeback routes, curls,
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: stop routes, whatever you want to call them, where he's
- 1:35:54Speaker 3: on a vertical plane, he's running the corner back off
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: and then just stopping instead of keeping running on the
- 1:35:59Speaker 3: go route.
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: The go route soon enough to keep the other, to
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: keep the defenders honest. Yeah.
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: And then that's when the go route becomes a problem is, well,
- 1:36:06Speaker 3: now you got to think about the comeback and he's
- 1:36:08Speaker 3: able to run by you on the go route. So
- 1:36:11Speaker 3: I think that he's, one trick pony is not the
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: right word. He's a vertical threat. Like he's a, he's
- 1:36:18Speaker 3: running a pure vertical threat. He's running a vertical route tree.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: Dante Stallworth, Demir, Philip Dorsett, Johnson, Philip Dorsett, real door sets.
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: The guy that keeps coming to mind when I think
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: of him.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: Uh, real quick, cause I messed up a little bit.
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: The playoff format for this year of college football guaranteed
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: bids for the conference championship champions of the power for
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: plus the highest rated conference champion from the group of six.
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: So there is still one of those teams that, But
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: there can only be one of those teams. I also
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: forgot about this. I'm curious if you'll like this or
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: hate this. This is so stupid that this is in there. So,
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: if one of those conference championships is ranked lower than 12,
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: it knocks the 12th ranked team out. If there's two,
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: it knocks the 11th ranked team out.
- 1:36:58Speaker 7: Right?
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: And on and on. Unless Notre Dame ranks in the
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: top 12, then they're automatically in and the team above
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: them gets bonked. All right. So you're, thank goodness we
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: get Notre Dame.
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: I'm just kidding.
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: That's kind of a stupid car, right? Join a conference.
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: That's a bad rule.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: That's a bad rule. My only issue is like, I
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: keep saying is Alabama, Notre Dame, uh, LSU. If those
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: teams are like 15th in the poll and you're letting
- 1:37:28Speaker 3: Tulane in or James Madison in, they do not belong
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: on the.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: Same field as Alabama. You're going to get one of
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: those teams. That's it.
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: I guess I'll have to live with that. This is
- 1:37:39Speaker 3: from Will in D.C. Is Channing Canada a kick return candidate?
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: And then he said, do you have any insight as
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: to why defensive players almost never return kicks these days?
- 1:37:49Speaker 3: He did it a little bit in the summer.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: He did.
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: More in practice. I don't think he returned any kickoffs
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: in games, if I remember correctly. Honestly, defensive players, I mean,
- 1:37:59Speaker 3: they don't have the ball as much. Right.
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: There's more pure... It's not as chaotic. A punt return
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: is kind of like an interception return in some ways.
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: You know, kick return is structured so much more like
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: an offensive play. Now there's more that goes into it.
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: Not to say it's easier, but it just mirrors an
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: offensive play so much more than it used to. Because
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: it used to be its own thing. So you could
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: have a defensive player work at it. Now that it's
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: so similar to an offensive play, the guys who are
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: used to playing offense are naturally, I think, established. step
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: ahead in terms of what you need to do in
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: that situation.
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: Yeah, so wide receivers, running backs are used to just
- 1:38:37Speaker 3: carrying the football. Other than specialty guys like Marcus Jones
- 1:38:42Speaker 3: that return punts, how many of those guys on defense
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: are used to carrying the football at that level?
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: It's also... Well, because now you still see defensive guys
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: return punts. Some of it is, too. You have to
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: be a little bigger to return kicks now because there's
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: more collisions. There's more of a premium on run power
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: than just straight line speed versus punt returns. So you
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: don't really see power runners on defense, I guess, would
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: be the... Do you get what I'm saying? Yeah. You're
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: not going to have... I'm trying. You wouldn't have Brandon Browner...
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: Return a kickoff.
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: There is now.
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: But that's kind of the build you need or who's
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: another guy that's like that. He just comes to mind
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: when I say big corner.
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: I don't know. That's to me. And I think Marcus
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: Jones would probably be good at returning anything.
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: But the reason why I don't think he's a primary
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: kickoff returner for them is his size. They're worried about
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: him getting hurt returning kickoffs. It's a car crash. Punt return,
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: usually unless you have a bad fair catch, no fair
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: catch situation where you get a little bit greedy and
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: you get run over, there's not really as many big
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: hits on punt returns like there is on kickoff returns.
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: This is from Michael. Can you point to any reason
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: that you think Elliot Wolfe is a good GM? Hitting
- 1:40:01Speaker 3: on Drake May is not a plus in his column.
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: He just did a segment detailing how bad this free
- 1:40:06Speaker 3: agent class and every draft he has been a part of.
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: So the reason why I'm reading this very negative email,
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: I do feel like we're getting a little choosy of
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: the good moves are Mike Rabel's moves and the bad
- 1:40:19Speaker 3: moves are Elliot Wolfe's moves. So if you want to
- 1:40:21Speaker 3: take Drake May out of it, that's fine. But if
- 1:40:24Speaker 3: you agree with Them going and getting Carlton Davis and
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: Robert Spillane and Milton Williams and A.J. Brown and Romeo Dobbs.
- 1:40:33Speaker 3: You can't say that the good ones Vrabel gets credit for,
- 1:40:37Speaker 3: but the bad ones we blame on Elliot Wolfe.
- 1:40:39Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: So the 24 draft was bad. He's admitted it. We've
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: all can say it. We can all be big boys
- 1:40:44Speaker 3: about that and just say it was a bad draft.
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: Did I tell you about my very cold take about
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: that draft?
- 1:40:49Speaker 5: No.
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: Hit me with it.
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: So I tweeted that Thursday night after they took Drake
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: and I waited to see if they were going to
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: get another pick in the first round. They didn't. I said,
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: Patriots got Drake May. They have a potential franchise quarterback.
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: They've had a good draft. The next two days will
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: decide whether or not they had a great draft. Does
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: Drake May alone make that a good draft? I kind
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: of would argue it does. It's not to defend the
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: rest of it, but like.
- 1:41:14Speaker 3: If you went into the draft and you said that exactly,
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: you could get your franchise quarterback... And nothing else. And
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: nothing else. You're taking the quarterback.
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. Like... What's a better draft? Hitting
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: on Drake May to the extent they hit on him
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: and nobody else being legit, or all of those guys
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: panning out as like starting caliber, strong backups, what they
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: were supposed to be, but the quarterback being a bust.
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: What's a better draft?
- 1:41:35Speaker 3: The quarterback.
- 1:41:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: What would you rather have? The rest of those guys
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: on the roster, but not Drake May, or Drake May
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: and none of the rest?
- 1:41:41Speaker 3: Drake May.
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: So I, this is not to, I'm not saying this
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: is like some massive defensive Elliott Wolfe, but I think
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: if you get the quarterback, it's a good draft no
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: matter what. And I end on it, one more thing
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: on that. Sports Hub Sunday kickoff, which, by the way,
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: is back this week. 8 to 10 with Andy Hart.
- 1:41:56Speaker 3: Are you going to have me on or what?
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: Sure. Even on, you get annoyed I have you on
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: too much. Even on this show, we did it. I
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: don't even need to plug the other show. We took
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: way too many calls that spring about J.J. McCarthy and
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: about Marvin Harrison Jr. Joe Alt. The Joe Alt one, whatever, like,
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: I can sort of sit with that reasoning. J.J. McCarthy
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: somehow made the Vikings. Marvin Harrison Jr. has been fine.
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: Do you remember the call? We would get this call
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: two or three times a week.
- 1:42:27Speaker 3: They're not ready for the quarterback.
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: Not even that. It was, they can't develop receivers. Marvin,
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: he's generational. He can't miss. How can this organization that
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: struggled on receivers pass on a guy like this? We
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: took way too many calls on J.J. McCarthy and on
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: Marvin Harrison, among others, to sit here and act like
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: Drake May was some kind of layup and everybody knew
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: it was the move. Yeah. I just, that's more me
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: victory lapping than defending the front office. But way too
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: many takes were thrown out that when we were, how
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: many times did we sit here and say, all right, well,
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: it's Mayor Daniels, whoever falls. Like, and we liked other guys.
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: I liked Pennix. I never said over the other two.
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: It's Mayor Daniels, whoever falls. That's the pick. We were
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: on that from like November.
- 1:43:15Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: So it clearly wasn't, but it clearly wasn't that obvious
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: to everybody else.
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: And then they'd never wavered. Like when, no, when we
- 1:43:24Speaker 3: saw it on the, in the off season, hard docs
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: with the giants, Elliot was like, yeah, if you trade
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: us your first and second round picks for the next
- 1:43:30Speaker 3: three drafts, right. Like maybe we'd consider it, but like,
- 1:43:33Speaker 3: we're talking about something crazy.
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: We were taking all, no, you got to take the hall.
- 1:43:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: Drake may be good, but move down and you can
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: get future picks and blah, blah, blah.
- 1:43:40Speaker 3: And like, yeah.
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: So that to go back to it, They've had their
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: issues in the front office. You made the right point.
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: You can't give one person credit for the good moves,
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: another person credit for the bad moves. The 2024 draft is,
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: even if I do, in one definition, call it a
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: good draft, a significant disappointment, and it sets the organization
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: back for sure.
- 1:44:00Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: Like, all of that. It's the process as a whole.
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: That's just, I don't want to absolve anything, but I
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: just look at it.
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: I just have funny semantics takes about the 24 draft.
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: The other thing about the 24 draft, if we're making excuses, is.
- 1:44:16Speaker 3: He had a coaching staff that was entirely green and
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: wasn't ready for it. Like Gerard Mayo should not have
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: been the head coach. They had an offensive coordinator had
- 1:44:23Speaker 3: never called plays before. They had a defensive coordinator had
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: never called plays before. They had a special teams coordinator
- 1:44:28Speaker 3: that had never been a coordinator before. So they took,
- 1:44:32Speaker 3: I'm not saying that Jalen Polk and Caden Wallace and
- 1:44:35Speaker 3: any of those players would have panned out better, but
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: they didn't exactly put them in a great.
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: Situation as rookies. Could a more veteran coaching staff have helped?
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: Cause the coaching staff plays a role in the draft.
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: In terms of scouting, developing, all of the above.
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: Could there have been more input from the coaching? Not
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: just putting the development of those players on the coaching staff,
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: but who they actually took.
- 1:44:59Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: Types and scheme fits and all of those. I don't
- 1:45:04Speaker 3: know if they had the answers to those questions. When
- 1:45:06Speaker 3: the scouting department said, what is a linebacker to draw
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: out male? What is a safety? What is a corner?
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: Wallace is the best example is they drafted Caden Wallace.
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: Who's a career, right? Tackle to play left tackle, gave
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: up on that very early, tried moving him inside a guard,
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: played four different positions within a year. You've really never
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: spent time at his college position. Like that's just, maybe
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: he'd never would have panned out either way, but yeah,
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: You put a player with legit talent in that through
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: that kind of rigmarole and you're going to get less
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: out of them. That's just the reality.
- 1:45:35Speaker 3: My biggest thing, though, is that you just because I
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: don't want it to come across like we're apologizing for
- 1:45:40Speaker 3: for Elliot Wolfe and your shows, especially I feel like
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: get on the beat a lot for, you know, running
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: cover for the team.
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: This is a big I think it's Beatle take that
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: like it's all for able now. Good or bad, it's
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: all Vrabel.
- 1:45:51Speaker 3: It has to, like, you have to either look at
- 1:45:54Speaker 3: it one of two ways. The easiest way, most straightforward,
- 1:45:57Speaker 3: is that it's all Vrabel. I look at it as
- 1:45:59Speaker 3: it's all of them. Like, it's Elliot Wolfe, it's Ryan Cowden,
- 1:46:02Speaker 3: it's Stryker, John Stretch Stryker, it's Mike Vrabel. Those four
- 1:46:07Speaker 3: guys are making the roster decisions at the top of
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: the organizational letterhead for this team. So again, if you're
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: going to take the 24 draft out of that, that's
- 1:46:17Speaker 3: all on Elliot Wolfe, right? Like they weren't here for that,
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: but the last two off seasons, the good moves are
- 1:46:22Speaker 3: their moves. The bad moves are their moves. So if
- 1:46:25Speaker 3: you don't want to feel great about Elliot Wolfe, or
- 1:46:28Speaker 3: this whole regime, then that's, that's your prerogative. That's fair.
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: But if AJ Brown goes out there and balls out,
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: then you have to, that's a good thing, right? If
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: Romeo Dobbs balls out, that's a check, right? You know,
- 1:46:39Speaker 3: Robert's playing and Carlin Davis and Milton Williams and Morgan
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: Moses all being good free agent signings last year. That's
- 1:46:46Speaker 3: a feather, right? That's a feather in the cap, right?
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: For those guys. So that's just how I feel about that. Um,
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: This is from Darius, who's very upset about our edge conversation.
- 1:46:57Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: So he said, send in two different emails about this. Okay.
- 1:47:01Speaker 3: So he's in Louisville. He said, I'm tired of hearing
- 1:47:04Speaker 3: about the edge position. We are technically in the second
- 1:47:07Speaker 3: year of a reboot. I think people forget. We got
- 1:47:09Speaker 3: AJ Brown, Romeo Dobbs, Vera Tucker, Bayard. We can't fix everything.
- 1:47:15Speaker 3: This in one off season. Then he said, Evan just said,
- 1:47:18Speaker 3: we don't have Superbowl edges. Well, we didn't have Superbowl
- 1:47:20Speaker 3: edges last year and we still got there. I just
- 1:47:23Speaker 3: let the coaches do their thing and let's outscore everybody.
- 1:47:26Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: I don't want to have to outscore everybody. I, the
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: edge group better, worse than it was last year.
- 1:47:31Speaker 3: Worse.
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: Correct.
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: No Landry right now. No Caleb on Jason.
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: Like even if they had Caleb on chase on now,
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: no Anthony Jennings, no, that's a sneaky big one. If
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: they added Draymond Jones to Caleb on chase on, I
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: honestly feel a lot better. Even just that move. I'd
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: be like, you know what? The secondary is really good.
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: They're good in the middle. Like that's enough. Yeah, it's,
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: they got worse than they were last year. And you can't,
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: you can't in the same breath say, well, they were
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: in the middle of a rebuild and well, they're going
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: to like, they have a path to this. Like we're
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: look last year. We didn't look at it through Superbowl margins.
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: Now we're looking at it through Superbowl margins. If they
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: won four games last year.
- 1:48:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: I don't think the edge would be as much of
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: a talking point. Cause we'd be wondering about the quarterback
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: in the line and just the things that have to
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: go wrong for you to lose four games. There's more.
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: attention on this now. At best, I think they're even
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: where they were last year.
- 1:48:25Speaker 8: But.
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: They're a much better team, so you look at things
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: more on the margins. That's the reality of it.
- 1:48:30Speaker 3: I can hear the argument of they wanted to create
- 1:48:33Speaker 3: opportunities for some younger players. Gabe Ackes.
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: But they only have one younger player.
- 1:48:37Speaker 3: I guess Ponder. Ponder, Hugh Hutchins. I don't know if
- 1:48:41Speaker 3: you count Hugh Hutchins as a depth player, but... you know,
- 1:48:44Speaker 3: ponder and hack is, and I'm just saying theoretically, when
- 1:48:47Speaker 3: they made these decisions in March, they probably knew they
- 1:48:49Speaker 3: were going to use a top 100 pick on an
- 1:48:51Speaker 3: edge player.
- 1:48:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: And they wanted to create snaps and opportunity for that player.
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: So I, I, I get that. Uh, but I guess
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: my thought is, could you have had Draymond Jones? Caleb
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: on chase on did not sign a big contract. In
- 1:49:05Speaker 3: free agency.
- 1:49:06Speaker 8: No.
- 1:49:06Speaker 3: It was a reasonable deal. Kyrus Tonga did not sign
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: a big contract with Kansas City.
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: Well, it's not Edge, but yeah.
- 1:49:11Speaker 3: But I'm just going through all these different positions. Right.
- 1:49:15Speaker 3: Jack Gibbons did not sign an unreasonable contract.
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: He was an RFA. They could have protected him.
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: So all these types of guys, if you had had
- 1:49:23Speaker 3: Draymond Jones chased on Akis Ponder.
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:49:27Speaker 3: Is there really no opportunity? Like, you're still, do you
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: feel like you're blocking the young guys?
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: We talked about this earlier, and look, they didn't know
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: that Akas was going to miss the spring, but like,
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: it would have allowed you to ease him in more.
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: Which for any rookie should be, especially when you're picking
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: at the end of the rounds, like, maybe your first
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: guy's an immediate impact player. Second round, once you get
- 1:49:45Speaker 2: past like the top 50, you kind of want to
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: ease guys in outside of. a handful of positions, edge rushers,
- 1:49:50Speaker 2: a position where I think you can ease guys in
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: like running back.
- 1:49:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: You take a running back in the top 100. That
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: guy's probably a starter or a heavy rotational.
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: There's no, there's no doubt that to the emailers point,
- 1:50:00Speaker 3: you know, next off season, I'm going to expect them
- 1:50:03Speaker 3: to make a real high investment in an edge rusher
- 1:50:05Speaker 3: top 100 pick. Honestly, probably a first round pick.
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: Yonsei Pierre, Damon Wilson. I like John Henry Daly. That's
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: a great name. I'm usually not a big Michigan edge
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: rusher guy, but sometimes the names get me. We'll see
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: what he does this year.
- 1:50:19Speaker 3: Oh, there's a note. We got a call. So I
- 1:50:22Speaker 3: can take this call from Jay in Atlanta, and then
- 1:50:24Speaker 3: we have a few more emails before we wrap it up. Jay,
- 1:50:27Speaker 3: what's up, Jay?
- 1:50:30Speaker 7: Hello, Gus, can you hear me?
- 1:50:31Speaker 3: Yeah, we got you.
- 1:50:32Speaker 7: All right, thank you. So since Drake has been going
- 1:50:35Speaker 7: in year two with Josh, has two receivers in A.J.
- 1:50:39Speaker 7: and Dobbs, Is it possible that we could possibly see
- 1:50:42Speaker 7: an increase in his attempt so that not only can A.J.
- 1:50:47Speaker 7: and Dobbs eat, but maybe some of the other guys
- 1:50:50Speaker 7: can have a little bit more volume so he can
- 1:50:53Speaker 7: eat in the offense and not be so touchdown dependent
- 1:50:56Speaker 7: and possibly look better long-term for development on the roster?
- 1:51:00Speaker 11: I'll take it off the line, guys.
- 1:51:02Speaker 3: I guess I kind of, what was the question exactly?
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: Are we going to see more pass attempts for Drake
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: May this year?
- 1:51:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: I think just based off the score, we're going to
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: see more pass attempts. Based off the score, I think
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: they want to run with more tempo. I think they
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: want to get more plays in over the course of
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: the game.
- 1:51:19Speaker 3: The reason why they didn't have a lot of pass
- 1:51:20Speaker 3: attempts last year is because they didn't play a lot
- 1:51:22Speaker 3: of fourth quarters last year. So, you know, pass attempts
- 1:51:26Speaker 3: volume goes up when the games are close.
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: And then you have that stat about pace, like, and
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: I think you want to play more uptown, but yeah,
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: he's going to throw more passes. Yeah.
- 1:51:34Speaker 3: I mean, when you're, you know, playing Tennessee or you're playing,
- 1:51:38Speaker 3: you know, Cleveland and you're up three touchdowns in the
- 1:51:42Speaker 3: fourth quarter, they kind of put the game on ice
- 1:51:45Speaker 3: at that point and they're not passing, you know? So
- 1:51:47Speaker 3: those stats are always situation dependent. It's always game dependent
- 1:51:51Speaker 3: in terms of score and stuff like that. And another
- 1:51:54Speaker 3: good one that I, we got a bunch of Seahawks questions,
- 1:51:57Speaker 3: so we can maybe answer some of that. I just,
- 1:51:59Speaker 3: you know, we will have another show before we do
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: have another show. Nickname email. Yeah. He said, how do
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: you feel about cover zero for Christian Gonzalez? Cause he
- 1:52:08Speaker 3: does wear zero.
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: Especially since they're probably going to run a lot of
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: cover zero this year. Yep.
- 1:52:14Speaker 3: It's not bad.
- 1:52:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:52:17Speaker 3: Cover zero Christian Gonzalez. I, I, I kind of just
- 1:52:20Speaker 3: feel like the one with him is built in with Donzo.
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: Cover zero is not a bad nickname though.
- 1:52:26Speaker 3: No, it's not bad. I don't mind it. So yeah,
- 1:52:29Speaker 3: we got a bunch of Seattle questions and of course
- 1:52:31Speaker 3: we have some callers calling in eight minutes to go
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: in the show. So we'll just go right to these guys.
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: Charles is in the Bronx. We're in the Bronx.
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: Are you Charles?
- 1:52:40Speaker 11: Hey, how are you doing?
- 1:52:41Speaker 3: Hey, good.
- 1:52:43Speaker 10: First time, long time. Now, Evan, I was, I got
- 1:52:46Speaker 10: to say, first off, those chairs look quite uncomfortable. I
- 1:52:50Speaker 10: think that you guys might need to get some updates there,
- 1:52:52Speaker 10: but that's a separate point.
- 1:52:53Speaker 3: I think it's just us. I think it's, we're not
- 1:52:56Speaker 3: used to it. It's probably our fault.
- 1:52:58Speaker 10: You guys just look so uncomfortable sitting there. I feel
- 1:53:01Speaker 10: bad for you, but getting to the point, someone emailed
- 1:53:05Speaker 10: in earlier about how Elliot Wolf kind of sucks at
- 1:53:07Speaker 10: his job.
- 1:53:09Speaker 3: And he, Thank you, Evan.
- 1:53:10Speaker 10: You actually brought up something that the title talk crew
- 1:53:14Speaker 10: talks about, Bryce and Luke and Silva. But when you
- 1:53:18Speaker 10: have the title, you get all the credit for the
- 1:53:20Speaker 10: good stuff, and you get all the credit for the
- 1:53:22Speaker 10: bad stuff. We can't be picking and choosing, giving Vrabel
- 1:53:25Speaker 10: all the credit for when the good things happen and
- 1:53:27Speaker 10: when everything bad happens. It's Elliott Wolfe. Elliott Wolfe has
- 1:53:32Speaker 10: that title. He talks to the media. He talks to
- 1:53:35Speaker 10: the GMs. Give the guy credit. He did great in
- 1:53:39Speaker 10: the Eagles trade. We'll see how he does with this
- 1:53:42Speaker 10: Gonzo trade. There's a lot to talk about there.
- 1:53:44Speaker 7: But Patriots fans, we've got to be a.
- 1:53:45Speaker 10: Little bit smarter about this. Brable doesn't only do good things,
- 1:53:48Speaker 10: and Wolf doesn't only do bad things.
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 1:53:51Speaker 3: Thanks for the call, Charles. Yeah, I was talking to
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: Paul about this off the air, and I guess back
- 1:53:56Speaker 3: in the day this used to happen with Scott Pioli
- 1:53:58Speaker 3: and Bill Belichick.
- 1:54:00Speaker 2: I could see that.
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: Where Belichick got credit for all the good stuff and
- 1:54:02Speaker 3: Pioli got blamed for all the bad stuff or vice versa.
- 1:54:05Speaker 3: I don't know which way it was. Probably that way.
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: Probably.
- 1:54:09Speaker 3: And that's just what happens when the GM and the
- 1:54:11Speaker 3: head coach or the top personnel executive and the head
- 1:54:14Speaker 3: coach are different people.
- 1:54:16Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:54:16Speaker 3: It's like, who's to blame? Like, who am I pointing
- 1:54:18Speaker 3: the finger at when things go bad?
- 1:54:20Speaker 2: But that's all.
- 1:54:21Speaker 3: I'm not saying that you have to think that they're
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: good at it. But if we're going to grade the
- 1:54:26Speaker 3: personnel moves, it has to be one unified.
- 1:54:29Speaker 2: Just call it the front office. Front office did a
- 1:54:31Speaker 2: good job. Whoever that is, Wolf, Vrabel, Cowden, Groh, like
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: they're as much as they, you know, Vrabel, the thing
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: that is no front office, there's no back office. It's
- 1:54:43Speaker 2: just us. I think those were the four stretched. He
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: might not even have said grow. I think he said stretch, but.
- 1:54:48Speaker 3: Yeah, stretch, Cowden, Wolf.
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: Unless we hear them come out and say, you know, well,
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: Elliot Wolf pounded the table for this guy in the
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: draft room, or, you know, Cowden really didn't want this guy.
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: Unless we hear that, you kind of have to view
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: it as a collective. That's it.
- 1:55:03Speaker 3: It is a collective.
- 1:55:04Speaker 2: And some you can maybe figure out, like, who do
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: we think was... bringing up kevin byard right who do
- 1:55:13Speaker 2: we think was pushing to get kevin byard here right
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: like we can figure that out with the draft it's
- 1:55:17Speaker 2: a little tougher you really don't know and there's some
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: tendency history we have for wolf there's some tendency history
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: we have for vrabel but yeah you don't know it's
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: it's the collective group obviously if somebody comes who's with
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: the packers okay there's ellie wolf if somebody comes with
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: the giants yeah that's probably cowden's you know cowden is
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: the the point person on that again aj brown kevin
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: byard those are great. So it's a little easier with
- 1:55:39Speaker 2: the veterans, but it's still a collective.
- 1:55:41Speaker 3: So the way that it was explained to me, but
- 1:55:43Speaker 3: by Elliot Wolf himself, one of the combines, I forget
- 1:55:46Speaker 3: which one it was. The, the, the ideal setup for
- 1:55:50Speaker 3: most personnel guys is that the coach comes to you
- 1:55:54Speaker 3: and says, we need, I'll just use edge. Cause we've
- 1:55:57Speaker 3: been talking a lot about edge.
- 1:55:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:55:59Speaker 3: We need an edge rusher that can do these specific things,
- 1:56:03Speaker 3: whether that's a get after the quarterback or, setting the
- 1:56:07Speaker 3: edge of the defense, whatever, like, priorities the coach has. Like,
- 1:56:11Speaker 3: this is what we need this edge rusher to do
- 1:56:14Speaker 3: because schematically this is how we're going to use him
- 1:56:16Speaker 3: and this is the role that we have for him.
- 1:56:19Speaker 3: The GM wants that coach. The coach that's going to say,
- 1:56:22Speaker 3: lay it out and say, this is exactly what I'm
- 1:56:25Speaker 3: looking for in this type of player. Then it's on
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: the executive to find that player.
- 1:56:31Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:56:32Speaker 3: But you have the parameters of the type of player
- 1:56:35Speaker 3: from the coach. So if the coach is asking for
- 1:56:37Speaker 3: a 260 pound edge setting outside linebacker, then don't draft
- 1:56:44Speaker 3: a 240 pound speed rusher, right? Like, you know, that's
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: the only sort of thing, but that's the collaboration. Like
- 1:56:50Speaker 3: that's the collective of it. Now, if you want to
- 1:56:53Speaker 3: say that they drafted Gabe Ackes and they should have
- 1:56:56Speaker 3: drafted this guy instead, that is in the similar mold
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: to Gabe Ackes. then we could get down to the
- 1:57:01Speaker 3: nitty-gritty of those specifics. But I think the setups that
- 1:57:05Speaker 3: work the best work like that. These are the schemes
- 1:57:08Speaker 3: we're running. These are the roles that we have for players.
- 1:57:11Speaker 3: These are the players that fit those roles. Let's find
- 1:57:13Speaker 3: the best one that we can get.
- 1:57:15Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:57:15Speaker 3: You know, that sort of thing. Last call here from,
- 1:57:18Speaker 3: is this William in Philly? What's up, William?
- 1:57:21Speaker 11: What's going on, Evan? How you doing?
- 1:57:23Speaker 7: Good.
- 1:57:24Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:57:25Speaker 11: Hey, Alex, how you feeling?
- 1:57:26Speaker 8: Hey.
- 1:57:27Speaker 11: All right. I have two things. I know y'all about
- 1:57:30Speaker 11: the closed shop. Why not? So let me just get
- 1:57:32Speaker 11: these two things. I was going to get one pushback
- 1:57:34Speaker 11: on the last caller, okay, and just a little bit
- 1:57:38Speaker 11: of what y'all said. My opinion is just if Mark
- 1:57:43Speaker 11: Wabel wasn't there, I don't think A.J. Brown or Kevin Biden,
- 1:57:47Speaker 11: none of them would beat it because those are Mark
- 1:57:50Speaker 11: Wabel's bulls.
- 1:57:51Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:57:52Speaker 11: I just, just to see one year long drafting that
- 1:57:55Speaker 11: alien Wolf did me and you didn't draft anything right.
- 1:57:58Speaker 11: But a quarterback, I mean, Hey, I mean, Drake, man,
- 1:58:00Speaker 11: I was, I wanted, I wanted Drake me from the rip.
- 1:58:02Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:58:03Speaker 11: So I want to make that clear.
- 1:58:05Speaker 7: All right?
- 1:58:05Speaker 11: But other than that, that's it. And, Evan, you co-signed
- 1:58:09Speaker 11: for Jalen Pope, too. I remember that because you was
- 1:58:12Speaker 11: high on him for whatever reason.
- 1:58:13Speaker 3: Not me. No, you got the wrong one there.
- 1:58:16Speaker 7: No, you haven't.
- 1:58:16Speaker 11: Really haven't.
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: Really. Okay.
- 1:58:20Speaker 11: All right, my last question, and it is... for Alex. Alex, look,
- 1:58:24Speaker 11: the 2027 draft class is coming, so can you just
- 1:58:27Speaker 11: give me just a little bit of a sneak peek
- 1:58:29Speaker 11: other than Edge? Can you give me two of the
- 1:58:32Speaker 11: positions that we need badly and what would be the names?
- 1:58:35Speaker 11: And I'll be right there, okay?
- 1:58:37Speaker 3: Thanks, William. Thanks for the call. Now I'm a Jalen
- 1:58:40Speaker 3: Polk guy.
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: I guess. Well, all right, if you want to say,
- 1:58:42Speaker 2: all right, well, Vrabel brought in a good player, you could...
- 1:58:45Speaker 2: Did they not invest more in Edge because Vrabel was
- 1:58:47Speaker 2: counting on Landry?
- 1:58:49Speaker 3: It's possible.
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: And so that can go both ways too.
- 1:58:51Speaker 3: You're going to post this on, we don't have a
- 1:58:53Speaker 3: ton of time.
- 1:58:54Speaker 2: Just rip through some quick. It's a good slot receiver here.
- 1:58:57Speaker 2: I was specifically looking because Pop Dog is in a
- 1:58:59Speaker 2: contract here. Wyatt Young, Oklahoma State. Isaiah Santega, Oklahoma. Brandon Innes,
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: Ohio State. Eugene Wilson III, yes, the son of the
- 1:59:08Speaker 2: former Patriot safety, is at LSU. Jaden Greathouse at Evan's
- 1:59:12Speaker 2: favorite school, Notre Dame. Here, Evan, you tell me what
- 1:59:16Speaker 2: position you want. Guard, linebacker, corner, safety.
- 1:59:21Speaker 3: Give me the linebacker.
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: The linebackers.
- 1:59:23Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:59:23Speaker 2: Fun linebacker class.
- 1:59:25Speaker 3: You have 30 seconds.
- 1:59:26Speaker 2: Sammy Brown, Clemson, Chris Cole, Georgia, Ben Roberts, Texas Tech,
- 1:59:31Speaker 2: Whit Weeks, LSU, Raylan Wilson, Georgia.
- 1:59:34Speaker 3: You've been telling me about Whit Weeks for three years.
- 1:59:36Speaker 2: Whit Weeks is just Robert Splane.
- 1:59:39Speaker 3: You've been telling me about Whit Weeks for three years.
- 1:59:41Speaker 2: I thought he was going to come out in the
- 1:59:42Speaker 2: draft and then he got hurt. Weeks can play, man.
- 1:59:44Speaker 3: We got to wrap it up. Next week, we are
- 1:59:47Speaker 3: going to be on Tuesday because the game is on
- 1:59:49Speaker 3: a Wednesday, which is throwing everything off. So we'll be
- 1:59:52Speaker 3: on Tuesday next week at 10 a.m. before Patriots unfiltered.
- 1:59:56Speaker 3: I will be remote. I'll be in Seattle for the game.
- 1:59:59Speaker 3: So Alex is going to be here. I'll be in Seattle.
- 2:00:01Speaker 3: But catch 22, 10 a.m. next Tuesday. Once we get
- 2:00:05Speaker 3: in season, we're going to be 10 a.m. on Wednesdays,
- 2:00:07Speaker 3: and we're going to stay there for as long as
- 2:00:09Speaker 3: we possibly can.
- 2:00:11Speaker 2: At least the first six weeks, then everything gets nuts.
- 2:00:14Speaker 3: It's a little bit of a wacky schedule this year.
- 2:00:16Speaker 3: We have a lot of travel, so just bear with
- 2:00:18Speaker 3: us in terms of that when that stuff comes up.
- 2:00:21Speaker 3: But 10 a.m. next Tuesday for the live show, and
- 2:00:24Speaker 3: then 10 a.m. Wednesdays moving forward. Until then, Patriots unfiltered
- 2:00:30Speaker 3: tomorrow at noon. We'll see you guys next week on Catch-22,
- 2:00:34Speaker 3: and we'll start talking about the Seahawks.
- 2:00:38Speaker 2: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
- 2:00:40Speaker 13: If you really want to help us, make sure you
- 2:00:42Speaker 13: like us wherever you get your podcasts, like Apple Podcasts
- 2:00:45Speaker 13: or Spotify. Also, make sure you follow us on the
- 2:00:47Speaker 13: New England Patriots YouTube channel to see this show and
- 2:00:49Speaker 13: everything else that we do here at the Patriots.
- 2:00:51Speaker 2: Thanks a lot.
