- 0:15Speaker 1: Pushkin.
- 0:20Speaker 2: If you listen to season one of Revisionist History, I
- 0:23Speaker 2: think you know that I have a weakness for the
- 0:25Speaker 2: big idea, maybe even a fatal weakness. On my tombstone,
- 0:30Speaker 2: it's going to say, Malcolm Gladwell rest in peace. His
- 0:34Speaker 2: one big idea is that there was one big idea
- 0:37Speaker 2: to explain everything. I began season two of Revisionist History
- 0:42Speaker 2: with the same obsession. I think I interviewed thirty or
- 0:46Speaker 2: forty people, read a few dozen books, camped out in
- 0:49Speaker 2: the NYU library, all in search of that little tingle,
- 0:54Speaker 2: that moment when you realize that actually this is just
- 0:57Speaker 2: weird enough. This is totally some history with revising ladies
- 1:05Speaker 2: and gentlemen. I give you Mark Cohen, philosopher.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Step in the same river twice, because each time you
- 1:12Speaker 1: step in the river, you're stepping into different water.
- 1:18Speaker 2: And then the professor starts talking about Heraclitis rivers and
- 1:23Speaker 2: the ship of theseus and light bulbs, light bombs go off.
- 1:28Speaker 3: The question is if you change, If you have a
- 1:30Speaker 3: ship and you change a sex on ancient grief thinking,
- 1:32Speaker 3: and you change one board at a time, is at
- 1:36Speaker 3: the end of the day's ship different. That's what this is.
- 1:41Speaker 2: In the season coming up, I'm going to take you
- 1:43Speaker 2: to McDonald's and the French fries they had back in
- 1:46Speaker 2: the day.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Texture on six thirty seven is shatteringly crisp, but's amazing,
- 1:52Speaker 1: perfect French frye texture.
- 1:54Speaker 2: I'm going to take you on a little tour of
- 1:56Speaker 2: the golf courses of Los Angeles and the dark secret
- 1:59Speaker 2: behind their existence.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Looks like a couple of layers of barboyre.
- 2:04Speaker 2: This looks like the Berlin Wall. If they want us
- 2:06Speaker 2: to get in there and tell you a story, worry
- 2:09Speaker 2: about a truly dysfunctional friendship.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It was clearly the only person he ever loved in
- 2:15Speaker 1: his life. There was no one else.
- 2:19Speaker 2: It's possible, possible that all of that is about the river, and.
- 2:26Speaker 1: That leads to the thought that no compound material object
- 2:33Speaker 1: lasts any time at all. It's constantly being renewed and
- 2:36Speaker 1: replaced by new objects or not.
- 2:40Speaker 2: As always with revisionist history, reasonable minds will probably disagree
- 2:50Speaker 2: Revisionist History, because sometimes the past deserves a second chance.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Season two of Revisionist History launches June fifteenth,
