- 0:01Speaker 1: You have the right to remain silent.
- 0:09Speaker 2: You have the right to have a lawyer present to
- 0:11Speaker 2: advise you before and during any question.
- 0:12Speaker 3: They say to understand a person, you have to walk
- 0:15Speaker 3: a mile in their shoes. That's exactly what I'm gonna do.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I'm going to jail to try and understand the American
- 0:28Speaker 3: criminal justice system from the inside.
- 0:38Speaker 4: America incarcerates more.
- 0:40Speaker 3: People than any other country in the world. And the
- 0:43Speaker 3: largest population of inmates are housed in Texas.
- 0:47Speaker 4: At quite a young.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Age, I promised myself that I'd never find myself in
- 0:54Speaker 3: this position, in the back of a police belt. Never
- 0:56Speaker 3: thought I'd know what it feels like to be here
- 0:59Speaker 3: right now.
- 1:02Speaker 5: I'm experiencing this.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Even though it is under these conditions, I know I've
- 1:06Speaker 3: not done anything wrong, I'm not getting a criminal record
- 1:08Speaker 3: for doing this, but there is an element of shame
- 1:11Speaker 3: in front of me, totally. I don't like sort of
- 1:15Speaker 3: feeling like this. I don't like being in this position.
- 1:28Speaker 3: For one week, I'll be locked inside Bear County, one
- 1:31Speaker 3: of the biggest jails in the state. I'll be experiencing
- 1:40Speaker 3: life as an inmate to try and find out the
- 1:43Speaker 3: real impact of being behind bars.
- 1:46Speaker 5: So this is actually happening now.
- 1:48Speaker 3: I'm about to head into the shutters, and I guess
- 1:51Speaker 3: once that shutter closes, that's it.
- 1:53Speaker 5: I'm in.
- 1:58Speaker 6: He is demanding that you obtain your sword if he
- 2:00Speaker 6: will contact you.
- 2:01Speaker 7: One, two, three, go ahead.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Any kind of jewelry, any kind of personal items, any effects,
- 2:14Speaker 5: anything like that? Just a ring. Just that right there?
- 2:16Speaker 5: All right, what I'm going to do is I'm going
- 2:17Speaker 5: to take this hand out of your handcuffs. You're going
- 2:19Speaker 5: to put it on the platform. You have any inside
- 2:25Speaker 5: pockets inside your jacket?
- 2:27Speaker 8: Yes.
- 2:29Speaker 5: And that ring, is that ring able to come off you? Yes,
- 2:31Speaker 5: it is. Ready to fire?
- 2:33Speaker 1: Ready to fire?
- 2:34Speaker 5: Yes. Open your mouth up, tongue up. Lift your tongue up. Yes, sir.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Thank you. Go ahead and close your mouth.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Every day, around 100 people enter this jail and 100
- 2:49Speaker 3: people leave, with the total population reaching nearly 4,500 inmates.
- 2:58Speaker 5: So what's the reason for removing my jewellery and my shoelaces?
- 3:00Speaker 9: Well, the shoelaces down here, number one, is for your
- 3:02Speaker 9: safety and for the safety of others.
- 3:05Speaker 3: After being arrested, inmates are first placed in jail to
- 3:08Speaker 3: await trial or serve short sentences. Stays here usually last
- 3:13Speaker 3: under a year.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Do you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse?
- 3:18Speaker 5: Are you expecting to withdraw from drugs or alcohol today?
- 3:23Speaker 5: Do you currently believe that someone can control your mind?
- 3:27Speaker 9: Prior to arrest, did you feel depressed, down, or take
- 3:30Speaker 9: little interest in things?
- 3:31Speaker 5: Are you thinking of killing yourself or injuring yourself today?
- 3:34Speaker 10: Thank you, sir.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Come and stand right here.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Do you feel suicidal at all? I feel suicidal, yeah.
- 3:45Speaker 11: Have you been seen by any kind of mental health
- 3:48Speaker 11: or put into a mental institution for any.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Reason? Are you wearing briefs or boxers, sir? Boxes. Pardon me? Boxes.
- 4:05Speaker 5: And what color are they? Black. Careful that it doesn't
- 4:08Speaker 5: spill out.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Got it?
- 4:23Speaker 1: I sort of feel like anything that made me me
- 4:30Speaker 1: is gone. I'm a prisoner now.
- 4:34Speaker 10: I'm wearing a pair.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Of socks that have been through the system quite a
- 4:38Speaker 3: few times. Even down to me underweight, it's all county jail.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Nothing about me right now.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Has come from me. There are 75 units in this jail.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Some of which provide additional support for inmates' physical and
- 5:15Speaker 3: mental health needs. I'm relieved to be taken to the
- 5:25Speaker 3: unit known as AA for low-risk inmates.
- 5:28Speaker 5: So that's two tiers, isn't it? Yes, sir. Shower area
- 5:35Speaker 5: and bathroom over there. Your cell is going to be
- 5:37Speaker 5: the first one, AA01, right? This is Officer Torres. He's
- 5:41Speaker 5: going to be a unit officer for this ship. This is, uh,
- 5:45Speaker 5: inmate Yates. This is Officer Torres.
- 5:46Speaker 9: Yates.
- 5:46Speaker 5: All right.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Nice to meet you.
- 5:53Speaker 9: And, of course, you have your lights.
- 5:54Speaker 5: You can turn them on and off, but here on
- 5:56Speaker 5: the side. Uh, this is the pressure toilet. All right.
- 6:13Speaker 12: Well, I won't be the first person in an orange
- 6:15Speaker 12: jumpsuit who's sat on this. It's got a nice orange
- 6:18Speaker 12: stain on my mattress. I think that's the sound of
- 6:26Speaker 12: me getting properly locked in.
- 6:28Speaker 5: Oh, it's open for a window.
- 6:29Speaker 12: The only window I've got that looks out onto the
- 6:32Speaker 12: communal area out there.
- 6:36Speaker 5: I guess I won't be seeing sunlight while I'm in here.
- 6:40Speaker 12: Again, something that I didn't really consider.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Within a 24-hour period, inmates in this unit are locked
- 7:05Speaker 3: away for around 12 hours. For the rest of the time,
- 7:10Speaker 3: they're sent to work in other parts of the jail
- 7:12Speaker 3: or allowed a short stint in the communal area.
- 7:18Speaker 5: Everyone's been let out of their cells.
- 7:20Speaker 3: At the moment, but I'm still in here behind my bench.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I don't know how.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Good a thing that is.
- 7:26Speaker 9: Yes, sir.
- 7:27Speaker 5: What's up? How you doing? What's going on?
- 7:29Speaker 10: What's up?
- 7:34Speaker 5: What's up?
- 7:37Speaker 10: What's up?
- 7:38Speaker 1: My name is Rich.
- 7:40Speaker 5: You all right? What's going on? Reggie, nice to meet you, bro.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Nice to meet you. Reggie, nice to meet you, bro.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Nice to meet you, nice to meet you. So you
- 7:59Speaker 5: lot get a couple hours out here, yeah?
- 8:01Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 3: And is this time that you lot treasure, this time
- 8:04Speaker 3: that you all look forward to?
- 8:05Speaker 5: It's the only time we got.
- 8:07Speaker 3: I'm keen to meet as many inmates as possible and
- 8:10Speaker 3: try and get some advice on how to cope while
- 8:12Speaker 3: I'm inside.
- 8:13Speaker 5: What's happening, Reggie? Nice to meet you. Jeffrey.
- 8:15Speaker 8: Mosley.
- 8:15Speaker 5: What's that? Mosley. Reggie.
- 8:17Speaker 13: You just got to keep your mind occupied. You know
- 8:20Speaker 13: what I mean?
- 8:21Speaker 3: Like, you got to read books.
- 8:23Speaker 13: You know, just take your mind off the things that
- 8:26Speaker 13: aren't really happening, you know?
- 8:28Speaker 5: And what happens if you.
- 8:32Speaker 13: Don't do that? Some people, they'll trip out. Like, they snap,
- 8:36Speaker 13: you know? They start to freak out. Because if you
- 8:40Speaker 13: start thinking about the worst possible things that could happen
- 8:43Speaker 13: to you, your mind will go crazy.
- 8:46Speaker 5: You know? Yeah. We were so young. I didn't think
- 8:50Speaker 5: that you guys would be... How old are you?
- 8:53Speaker 1: 22.
- 8:53Speaker 5: What did you do? Shoplifting. Shoplifting. What were you trying
- 8:57Speaker 5: to do? T-shirts. You ended up in here because of T-shirts?
- 9:01Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 9:02Speaker 5: So what was going through your head when they put
- 9:03Speaker 5: them handcuffs on? I was like, oh, man. I was
- 9:08Speaker 5: so mad. I was like, man, I wish I would
- 9:10Speaker 5: have just never did it. Oh, with some teachers.
- 9:12Speaker 8: Right.
- 9:12Speaker 3: What do you think your sentence is going to be?
- 9:14Speaker 5: A month or two, but no longer than that. It's
- 9:18Speaker 5: a misdemeanor, you know. It was just tagging on a
- 9:20Speaker 5: projector in school. That's all it was. I took a pin,
- 9:24Speaker 5: I edged it in there all bad. Oh, you're kidding me.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and the students saw me and they snitched me out.
- 9:28Speaker 5: And I was like, oh, you guy, I'm going to
- 9:30Speaker 5: get you later. And who ended up getting hit for that?
- 9:34Speaker 3: It's surprising to hear that crimes we might regard to
- 9:36Speaker 3: be minor in the UK are punished by a jail
- 9:39Speaker 3: sentence in Texas. It's dinner time in the unit, and
- 9:51Speaker 3: I'm about to have my first taste of jail food.
- 9:56Speaker 5: Oh, you got it figured out? Oh, I see. You
- 10:00Speaker 5: made a hamburger. Oh, man. It's just horrible.
- 10:09Speaker 4: It's terrible, bro. After dinner, I notice there's a new
- 10:16Speaker 4: arrival in the unit.
- 10:19Speaker 5: That guy's got a bag. That means he's just coming
- 10:21Speaker 5: in for the.
- 10:22Speaker 1: First time, right?
- 10:24Speaker 5: Yes.
- 10:28Speaker 3: This is 19-year-old Alex's first time in jail.
- 10:33Speaker 5: You got a window in here. You got more than
- 10:34Speaker 5: I got. See, I didn't even know it was dark out.
- 10:37Speaker 5: Do you know what time it is? No, I don't.
- 10:43Speaker 5: This is my first night in here. It's your first night, right?
- 10:45Speaker 14: It's my first night as well.
- 10:46Speaker 5: How are you? How are you coping?
- 10:48Speaker 14: Like, I'm fucking shaking right now, man.
- 10:51Speaker 5: I'm just keeping myself occupied.
- 10:53Speaker 14: I'm working out. I'm fixing everything I can. What is
- 10:57Speaker 14: this making you shake?
- 10:57Speaker 5: Is it anxiety? Is it fear? Is it what?
- 11:01Speaker 14: It's just anxiety, man. And I have so much in
- 11:05Speaker 14: my head that I'm not.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Supposed to be here.
- 11:08Speaker 14: I'm supposed to be at work right now, you know,
- 11:11Speaker 14: taking care of my sister and my mom and my
- 11:14Speaker 14: stepdad in Mexico. And he's on dialysis right now, you see?
- 11:17Speaker 14: And I'd send him 200 a week and look where
- 11:20Speaker 14: I'm at right now. I lost the job, I lost
- 11:24Speaker 14: my car, I'm homeless, and I don't know what's going
- 11:28Speaker 14: to happen to my stepfather.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Alex has been arrested for possession of a small amount
- 11:33Speaker 3: of marijuana, which I find out he was using to
- 11:36Speaker 3: combat his mental health issues.
- 11:39Speaker 14: I got diagnosed when I was 13 years old.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Diagnosed as what?
- 11:42Speaker 14: Bipolar, ADHD, and I was having very suicidal thoughts at
- 11:47Speaker 14: the time, where I was hearing things, and I couldn't
- 11:51Speaker 14: cope with those hearings, and I was very, very out
- 11:55Speaker 14: of there, man. I started taking the pills, and those
- 11:58Speaker 14: pills would calm my hearings down, but my anxiety would
- 12:02Speaker 14: just pop up, man, and my depression would just pop up, man,
- 12:06Speaker 14: and I used marijuana, and that's when I got out
- 12:08Speaker 14: of that facility, and then I went back again because
- 12:12Speaker 14: I started cutting myself. And then I went back again
- 12:16Speaker 14: because I tried to overdose. And then I went back
- 12:19Speaker 14: again because I tried to hang myself.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Did you mention that on the way into this unit?
- 12:25Speaker 5: Because they asked you all those questions. Of course not.
- 12:27Speaker 14: I'm not going to say yes to those.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Why?
- 12:29Speaker 14: Because if I say yes that I have attempted suicide,
- 12:34Speaker 14: it would just lead me to somewhere very, not even
- 12:37Speaker 14: a very nice place. I'm very lucky to come to
- 12:39Speaker 14: this unit. Because this unit, everybody is doing their, they
- 12:43Speaker 14: don't want to fight here. They just want to do
- 12:44Speaker 14: their time and go home to their family. If I was,
- 12:47Speaker 14: if I told them I attempted suicide, they would have
- 12:49Speaker 14: put me on some unit where there's more people would
- 12:52Speaker 14: give me more anxiety attacks, more problems, more suicidal thoughts,
- 12:56Speaker 14: you know.
- 13:11Speaker 5: First night, you ain't gonna be here that.
- 13:14Speaker 10: Long, bro.
- 13:15Speaker 5: I miss my father.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I miss everybody, man.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Look, this is my first time in here.
- 13:25Speaker 3: And the little experience and little knowledge I have at
- 13:27Speaker 3: this place, you can't be like.
- 13:28Speaker 5: This on your first night. You need to pull yourself together, man.
- 13:39Speaker 8: I don't really want to be here, man.
- 13:43Speaker 1: It's driving me nuts. I hate this place.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Look at the beds, bro.
- 13:49Speaker 10: I don't deserve this shit.
- 13:53Speaker 5: Come on, it's the first night. It's my first night.
- 13:55Speaker 5: You've just got to get your head straight, man.
- 13:57Speaker 1: All right?
- 14:00Speaker 5: All right. When you're done here talking to me, you've
- 14:03Speaker 5: got to promise me you're not going to talk to
- 14:05Speaker 5: a guy because you need to speak to someone. You
- 14:07Speaker 5: need someone to talk to. You need someone to be
- 14:09Speaker 5: there for you, man. You got me now. You know
- 14:11Speaker 5: that much, right? Right? Okay. I'm good, man. I'm good. Look,
- 14:20Speaker 5: before you go out there, just take ten minutes and
- 14:23Speaker 5: get your shit together, bro. You need to. Okay? Stay calm.
- 14:29Speaker 5: All right? You got this, man. I'm about. If you
- 14:31Speaker 5: need me, I'm in number one, all right?
- 14:34Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 14:35Speaker 10: Okay?
- 14:37Speaker 8: The majority of.
- 14:52Speaker 3: The people that I've spoken to have called this one
- 14:55Speaker 3: of the calmest wings that they've ever been in. You know,
- 14:58Speaker 3: they call this one of the safest bits of the prison,
- 15:01Speaker 3: which is strange to hear because the minute you start
- 15:04Speaker 3: to unpick some of their problems, very quickly, you see
- 15:09Speaker 3: them teetering on the edge, you know? Already there's been
- 15:12Speaker 3: guys in tears, there's been guys shaking in front of me,
- 15:14Speaker 3: there's been people telling me their story and not being
- 15:18Speaker 3: able to hold eye contact or, you know, or maintain
- 15:24Speaker 3: a level of conversation where it doesn't feel like they're
- 15:26Speaker 3: about to.
- 15:26Speaker 5: Spiral down it. And this is the place where the
- 15:31Speaker 5: most together guys are. Dollar up, here you get five
- 15:35Speaker 5: for a dollar. Yes.
- 15:36Speaker 3: After our conversation, Alex asked to see a counsellor to
- 15:39Speaker 3: tell them about his suicidal thoughts.
- 15:45Speaker 5: What's happened with Alex? Is he still here? He said
- 15:49Speaker 5: he was having thoughts of suicide or self-harm. So we
- 15:52Speaker 5: had him talk to one of our mental health counselors
- 15:56Speaker 5: right now. Okay. So where do you think that will lead?
- 15:57Speaker 5: Is he going to come back here or will he
- 15:58Speaker 5: go to another car? It's actually up to our mental
- 16:01Speaker 5: health counselor. They're going to assess him? They're going to
- 16:03Speaker 5: assess him.
- 16:04Speaker 3: If they feel that he is in danger of self-harm,
- 16:07Speaker 3: he will be placed in a suicide protection cell or
- 16:11Speaker 3: a unit.
- 16:12Speaker 5: All right.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 16:13Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 16:16Speaker 3: I'm impressed with how quickly the jail has dealt with Alex.
- 16:19Speaker 3: And it's a relief to know he might now get
- 16:21Speaker 3: the support he needs.
- 16:22Speaker 12: I guess that's all the darkness I'm gonna get. One
- 16:38Speaker 12: of the strangest days ever. And lying here in this
- 16:42Speaker 12: bunk under possibly the scratchiest sheet that's ever been produced.
- 16:49Speaker 12: I'm not feeling sorry for myself. The thing that I
- 16:53Speaker 12: can't stop thinking about is Alex. He's a good guy
- 16:56Speaker 12: and he isn't here this evening. He's been moved to
- 17:01Speaker 12: a different ward because of his suicidal thoughts.
- 17:07Speaker 5: I don't know where he's going to end up eventually.
- 17:13Speaker 5: I just hope he's alright.
- 17:33Speaker 3: They've given me my, um, my toothbrush and toothpaste in
- 17:42Speaker 3: a glove.
- 17:47Speaker 5: Even on a plane, you get more of a toothbrush
- 17:49Speaker 5: than that. This is great. This is shit, how are
- 17:58Speaker 5: you supposed to get to anything with this? I ain't
- 18:02Speaker 5: getting in the fucking shower. No way am I getting
- 18:17Speaker 5: in the shower.
- 18:18Speaker 4: No way.
- 18:20Speaker 5: I mean, this is supposed to be pretty cool, calm, hot.
- 18:27Speaker 5: But even with that being the case, I'm going to
- 18:33Speaker 5: be the smelly inmate. Minty fresh breath.
- 18:37Speaker 3: After meeting Alex, I'm keen to hear if there are
- 18:40Speaker 3: inmates in the other units suffering from mental health issues.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Once I'm let out of my cell, I'm escorted to
- 18:50Speaker 3: the wing for more serious crimes, including murder.
- 19:01Speaker 5: Where we're headed to now, what is it? What's it
- 19:03Speaker 5: going to actually be like?
- 19:05Speaker 12: It's going to be set up sort of like where
- 19:06Speaker 12: we just were, but it's high risk.
- 19:10Speaker 5: What sort of crimes would they have committed?
- 19:12Speaker 4: Like big possession felonies, big drug cases, murders.
- 19:18Speaker 5: So in terms of atmosphere, is it going to be
- 19:19Speaker 5: similar to where I've been?
- 19:20Speaker 4: It's probably going to be a little louder.
- 19:22Speaker 10: Hey!
- 19:28Speaker 14: You sure I'm gonna be all right?
- 19:34Speaker 10: You're gonna be good.
- 19:37Speaker 5: We're not gonna go in there. The mood is real
- 19:40Speaker 5: different in here, right? Yes.
- 19:55Speaker 10: What's up? What's up?
- 19:58Speaker 5: What's good? What's good? What's good? You all right? How
- 20:02Speaker 5: you doing?
- 20:02Speaker 1: What up?
- 20:03Speaker 5: What up?
- 20:03Speaker 13: What up?
- 20:04Speaker 1: What up? Talk to me.
- 20:05Speaker 5: You're going to talk to me. You know what it is?
- 20:07Speaker 5: You know what it is?
- 20:08Speaker 3: We out here.
- 20:08Speaker 5: It's another live.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 20:10Speaker 5: Hey. Hold on.
- 20:11Speaker 8: Hold on.
- 20:12Speaker 10: Time out. Come on.
- 20:12Speaker 11: What's going on?
- 20:14Speaker 10: What's going on?
- 20:14Speaker 9: What's going on?
- 20:15Speaker 1: What's going on?
- 20:16Speaker 10: What's going on?
- 20:21Speaker 3: Without saying who, What sort of cases are the majority
- 20:24Speaker 3: of the people in here caught?
- 20:26Speaker 5: In here, two of us. Oh, murder. Oh, yeah, right here.
- 20:29Speaker 5: Murder case, but I ain't do it. Second family violence,
- 20:32Speaker 5: they enhanced it to a family. Drinking and drugging, being stupid.
- 20:36Speaker 5: I've been in and out of this jail probably over
- 20:38Speaker 5: 30 times. Since I was 16 years old. This particular jail.
- 20:41Speaker 5: And I've seen, say, people over and over. Sometimes I
- 20:44Speaker 5: think that... They come in because of issues that they
- 20:48Speaker 5: don't know how to deal with out there.
- 20:49Speaker 3: They come in, they're not really bad people, but they
- 20:52Speaker 3: just fall in the same order every time. I want
- 20:55Speaker 3: to know what help is given to the inmates on
- 20:57Speaker 3: this wing who are dealing with mental health issues.
- 21:01Speaker 8: I command you, I appreciate what you're doing.
- 21:03Speaker 5: I'm also schizophrenic, I'm a mental health patient. So, you
- 21:07Speaker 5: receive a medication for that?
- 21:08Speaker 13: Absolutely, yes, sir.
- 21:10Speaker 5: And are you getting counselling as well? Absolutely. And out there,
- 21:13Speaker 5: I self-medicate. What do you use to self-medicate? What do
- 21:16Speaker 5: you self-medicate with? Everything.
- 21:19Speaker 6: Everything from pharmaceuticals to methamphetamine, heroin, depending on trying everything,
- 21:25Speaker 6: you know.
- 21:26Speaker 5: What I mean?
- 21:27Speaker 3: It's reassuring to hear that some of the inmates suffering
- 21:30Speaker 3: from mental illness are receiving support within the jail.
- 21:35Speaker 5: All right, thank you very much, guys. Appreciate it.
- 21:37Speaker 4: Hey, shout-out time!
- 21:38Speaker 1: Shout-out time!
- 21:51Speaker 5: I want to get out!
- 21:53Speaker 3: I want to get out!
- 21:54Speaker 5: I want to get out! I want to get out!
- 21:55Speaker 1: I want to get out! I want to get out!
- 21:56Speaker 10: I want to get.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Out!
- 21:59Speaker 10: I want to get out!
- 22:00Speaker 5: I want to get out!
- 22:01Speaker 3: Returning to the AA unit for lunch, I'm surprised to
- 22:05Speaker 3: see Alex emerge from his cell.
- 22:08Speaker 5: So where did you go? Because I know you went
- 22:11Speaker 5: and Spoke to the guards about looking at maybe.
- 22:18Speaker 14: After we talked, I went and I asked the guard
- 22:21Speaker 14: if I can see a therapist or counselor, psychiatrist. The
- 22:24Speaker 14: guard told me, if I send you there, most likely
- 22:29Speaker 14: you're having suicidal thoughts. And when you have suicidal thoughts here,
- 22:33Speaker 14: I didn't know that they strip you naked and put
- 22:35Speaker 14: you in a cell by yourself.
- 22:37Speaker 5: I was like, that's worse.
- 22:38Speaker 14: So I told them, I told them, no, I'm fine.
- 22:41Speaker 14: But that lady, I was telling her my problems, what
- 22:44Speaker 14: I told you. And then she told me just to
- 22:46Speaker 14: man up, buck up, and just do your time. And
- 22:51Speaker 14: there's not much we can do because you're already here.
- 22:54Speaker 14: I know it's tough, and I know you miss your mom.
- 22:55Speaker 14: And I was crying, man.
- 22:56Speaker 5: I was crying. I miss my mom, you know?
- 22:59Speaker 14: But the fact is is that there's no help here,
- 23:03Speaker 14: you know? There's no help here.
- 23:05Speaker 5: I couldn't sleep. I had the lights.
- 23:09Speaker 14: On for a while. And then I saw you turn
- 23:12Speaker 14: off your lights, and I was like, If he can sleep,
- 23:15Speaker 14: I'm going.
- 23:16Speaker 5: To go to sleep. You could see myself. You could
- 23:17Speaker 5: see my cell window. We both had our first night
- 23:20Speaker 5: last night.
- 23:21Speaker 14: I saw you turn off your lights and I'm like,
- 23:23Speaker 14: I'm going to turn off my lights then. So I
- 23:25Speaker 14: turned off my lights and I counted 100 backwards and
- 23:28Speaker 14: I fell asleep.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Truth be told, I always promised myself that I would
- 23:35Speaker 3: never be in prison ever.
- 23:39Speaker 5: And to be here and to.
- 23:43Speaker 3: be complicit in the fact that I am still here
- 23:46Speaker 3: it's something that doesn't really rub for me you know
- 23:49Speaker 3: it's weird I am the reason that I'm here and
- 23:54Speaker 3: I can change it at any moment nobody is keeping
- 23:57Speaker 3: me here but I want to be here now I
- 23:59Speaker 3: think I need to be here out of respect to
- 24:02Speaker 3: the fact that these guys are telling me their deepest
- 24:04Speaker 3: and darkest so night two I'm about to get my
- 24:09Speaker 3: head down again after having some noodles for din din
- 24:13Speaker 3: And then it's another night in here. I think I
- 24:17Speaker 3: might skip that two-a-hand breakfast a bit.
- 24:20Speaker 5: I think I might do that.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Today, I'm joining Michael, one of the inmates from my
- 24:49Speaker 3: unit who has been given a job on.
- 24:50Speaker 4: The psychiatric wing.
- 24:53Speaker 5: One, one and four.
- 24:56Speaker 3: This is one of the only jails in America with
- 24:59Speaker 3: a facility dedicated to mental health.
- 25:02Speaker 5: This is what you got to wear. This is uniform.
- 25:05Speaker 5: In there? I have no idea what I'm walking.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Into right now.
- 25:15Speaker 5: There's boots in here. Why would you need boots?
- 25:17Speaker 6: A lot of times, guys will flutter floors. You know,
- 25:21Speaker 6: we've got to clean them all up and stuff like
- 25:22Speaker 6: that a lot of times. And we have to do that.
- 25:25Speaker 6: And so we put boots on. You don't get all the,
- 25:28Speaker 6: you know.
- 25:28Speaker 5: Stuff all over you. The feces and, you know, urine.
- 25:31Speaker 5: You know, and stuff like that. Sometimes it's nasty. It
- 25:34Speaker 5: really is.
- 25:35Speaker 3: So how often and how regular is it that there's
- 25:38Speaker 3: going to be feces and urine?
- 25:39Speaker 5: It's on a daily basis sometimes. This is my house.
- 26:02Speaker 5: This guy's made a bit of a mess in here.
- 26:05Speaker 5: He does this a lot, stuff like that. Yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 3: There are 52 beds for mentally ill inmates, all in
- 26:11Speaker 3: constant use. And in this unit, they're confined for 23
- 26:15Speaker 3: hours a day. The first time you came down here,
- 26:19Speaker 3: what was you thinking? Because this couldn't be more different
- 26:21Speaker 3: to the pub that we stay in.
- 26:22Speaker 5: Oh, it's totally different, yeah. When I first came down here,
- 26:25Speaker 5: I didn't know what to think about all this. And
- 26:27Speaker 5: it took.
- 26:28Speaker 15: A little bit of getting used to it.
- 26:41Speaker 3: Jail staff supervise the cells, and a separate medical team
- 26:45Speaker 3: handle the inmates' mental health treatments.
- 26:49Speaker 5: Apparently, these inmates are all incredibly unpredictable.
- 26:53Speaker 3: So, during clean-up, they get taken out of their cells
- 26:55Speaker 3: and we're sort of left to work the mess, as
- 27:00Speaker 3: it were.
- 27:01Speaker 5: So, let's see what happens.
- 27:03Speaker 3: It sounds like this guy over here isn't the biggest
- 27:05Speaker 3: fan of me chatting away on camera.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Yeah, he thinks I'm talking about him. And he's giving
- 27:13Speaker 5: me a name, which....
- 27:18Speaker 12: I've got a feeling this is going to be this
- 27:22Speaker 12: is going to be repeated the entire.
- 27:24Speaker 5: Time that I'm in here so I'm going to try
- 27:27Speaker 5: and get used.
- 27:27Speaker 10: To that oh man.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Wow I.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Think if Alex were to come in here it wouldn't
- 27:44Speaker 3: take long for him to to feel incredibly intimidated and
- 27:47Speaker 3: not really be able to handle it. I mean, the
- 27:50Speaker 3: state that he was in on that first night, if
- 27:53Speaker 3: he did come in here, I mean, this is far worse.
- 27:56Speaker 5: This is infinitely worse.
- 27:59Speaker 3: It's not long before the inmate escalates his behaviour from
- 28:02Speaker 3: shouting to a dirty protest.
- 28:07Speaker 5: I've not been told what sort of a mess he's made,
- 28:09Speaker 5: but I can smell it. What is that? I'm sick.
- 28:23Speaker 5: I want my cookies. I don't want to give.
- 28:25Speaker 10: Me cookies if I behave. I don't want to give
- 28:32Speaker 10: me cookies. Start moving everything on the other side so
- 28:56Speaker 10: we can do the other one.
- 29:30Speaker 3: I want to know if what Alex heard about the
- 29:32Speaker 3: suicide unit is true. So I'm going to see for myself. Normally,
- 29:40Speaker 3: individuals with more serious mental illnesses are placed in hospitals
- 29:44Speaker 3: rather than a jail. But with psychiatric beds in short supply,
- 29:48Speaker 3: that's not possible for every case.
- 30:01Speaker 10: Hey officer, how you.
- 30:13Speaker 5: Doing? I'm doing alright. So this is the suicide watch unit, right?
- 30:18Speaker 5: This is the suicide unit. So what's different about this
- 30:20Speaker 5: unit to their usual place?
- 30:22Speaker 16: Basically here, they give them what they call smocks. They're
- 30:28Speaker 16: not allowed to have towels with them, any kind of uniforms, socks,
- 30:32Speaker 16: because they.
- 30:32Speaker 5: Can use it.
- 30:35Speaker 16: To commit suicide, to hang themselves or something. So all
- 30:38Speaker 16: we give them is just a smock, and that's it.
- 30:41Speaker 5: And the smock is the green sort of sheet, right?
- 30:43Speaker 5: The smock is the green, and that's about it. They
- 30:46Speaker 5: don't wear nothing underneath other.
- 30:47Speaker 16: Than their sandals.
- 30:48Speaker 3: They're naked under the smock.
- 30:53Speaker 10: Right.
- 30:53Speaker 3: It's distressing to see how ill some of the inmates
- 30:56Speaker 3: are in this unit. But what's more worrying is the
- 30:59Speaker 3: responsibility for providing care for them is in the hands
- 31:02Speaker 3: of a local jail. I want to speak to one
- 31:06Speaker 3: of the senior officers about how Bexar County balances its
- 31:09Speaker 3: role between being an ordinary jail and a psychiatric facility.
- 31:16Speaker 5: Hey, officer. How you doing? Hey, all right. How you doing?
- 31:18Speaker 5: Good to see you again.
- 31:19Speaker 9: I'm OK.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Good to see you.
- 31:19Speaker 14: All right.
- 31:20Speaker 5: I'm still unsure where I'm allowed to stand. You're good.
- 31:23Speaker 5: Over here is good. You're all right. Black and yellow lines.
- 31:26Speaker 5: Black and yellow. Yes, sir. You're good. I've been on
- 31:29Speaker 5: cleanup duty today. How'd you like that?
- 31:31Speaker 3: Not massively. There was a dirty protest earlier. We had
- 31:35Speaker 3: to clean that up. That wasn't fun.
- 31:36Speaker 5: No.
- 31:37Speaker 3: But the psych ward, I mean, it's packed. Every cell
- 31:41Speaker 3: is full. There weren't just doctors there. There were also
- 31:44Speaker 3: officers as well. I mean, who takes control of that unit?
- 31:48Speaker 3: Is there more doctors than officers there?
- 31:51Speaker 5: And what's the balance?
- 31:52Speaker 9: Security and safety is always number one. Doctors, of course,
- 31:56Speaker 9: doctors and nurses, we don't overrule their medical advice.
- 31:59Speaker 5: If somebody needs.
- 32:00Speaker 9: Help, of course, we'll try to make sure that they
- 32:01Speaker 9: get the help that the doctors and nurses can step
- 32:03Speaker 9: in and help them. But first and foremost, it's always security.
- 32:05Speaker 9: If there's something that's going to put them in an
- 32:07Speaker 9: unsafe situation, we will step in for that to make
- 32:10Speaker 9: sure that that doesn't happen. Some of those guys over
- 32:12Speaker 9: there really do need help. You actually get some of
- 32:14Speaker 9: the guys over there that won't eat. They'll stare at you.
- 32:16Speaker 9: They won't blink. They'll just start talking to themselves. They'll
- 32:20Speaker 9: start talking to other people. They'll start yelling. I mean,
- 32:22Speaker 9: anything and everything that you can think of, I mean,
- 32:24Speaker 9: it's not a movie.
- 32:25Speaker 5: It's real life. It actually happens.
- 32:27Speaker 3: So for some of these more extreme cases, you know,
- 32:29Speaker 3: the guys who are doing dirty protests, the guys who are,
- 32:32Speaker 3: you know, in a cell with nothing in it and
- 32:34Speaker 3: wrapped in a green sheet, what kind of treatment are
- 32:36Speaker 3: they getting beyond.
- 32:38Speaker 5: .
- 32:59Speaker 9: .
- 33:00Speaker 3: them serving
- 33:03Speaker 3: time for their crime or the mental health professional saying, OK,
- 33:07Speaker 3: you are now stable?
- 33:09Speaker 5: What's the decision? Their crime. Their crime.
- 33:11Speaker 9: When their time is up for their crime, that's when
- 33:13Speaker 9: it's up.
- 33:14Speaker 3: So in your personal opinion, do you think that they
- 33:15Speaker 3: should be getting their treatment here or in a medical facility?
- 33:19Speaker 9: Medical facility. I think they do need to get their
- 33:22Speaker 9: treatment in a medical facility. This environment is not going
- 33:24Speaker 9: to get them the help that they need. I think
- 33:26Speaker 9: it's a quick fix. We keep getting the same people
- 33:29Speaker 9: back here over and over and over again. I mean,
- 33:31Speaker 9: there's people who get in here, they come in here,
- 33:33Speaker 9: you know, at least once a month for criminal trespassing.
- 33:35Speaker 9: People that shouldn't be here, you know they're crazy. They
- 33:37Speaker 9: can't even tell you what their name is. But yet
- 33:38Speaker 9: we find them over here because they were somewhere drinking
- 33:41Speaker 9: or they didn't get their medication and we find them
- 33:43Speaker 9: right back and everyone can tell you their names. I mean,
- 33:45Speaker 9: we know some of the same people over and over
- 33:47Speaker 9: and over again.
- 33:49Speaker 14: Right.
- 33:51Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 33:53Speaker 4: Bear County are doing their best.
- 33:55Speaker 3: But with inmates often finishing sentences regardless of their psychiatric progress,
- 34:00Speaker 3: and many not getting the necessary help on the outside,
- 34:03Speaker 3: it's no wonder so many come back again and again.
- 34:11Speaker 3: When I get back to the AA unit, Alex is
- 34:14Speaker 3: struggling to cope.
- 34:16Speaker 5: What's on your mind now? Yeah? You're Alex. Hold it together, man.
- 34:28Speaker 5: Hold it together, brother, all right? So what is it
- 34:31Speaker 5: that's making you so worried? What's on your mind?
- 34:35Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 34:38Speaker 5: Is it just not having enough to pass the time?
- 34:40Speaker 3: Is that what's getting to you?
- 34:44Speaker 5: You thought about trying to get a job? They were
- 34:47Speaker 5: supposed to.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Give me one.
- 34:48Speaker 5: I was working at medical with Michael, you know, one
- 34:50Speaker 5: of the older guys. So we were cleaning medical, but
- 34:53Speaker 5: there was a dirty protest. You know what one of
- 34:56Speaker 5: those things are? You know what a dirty protest is?
- 34:59Speaker 3: It's when someone makes a protest using their own feces
- 35:05Speaker 3: in their cells.
- 35:06Speaker 5: And we had to go and clean it up. Yeah, register.
- 35:11Speaker 10: I thought I.
- 35:12Speaker 5: Had it tough.
- 35:13Speaker 3: You're sitting here in your cell, chilling, reading your Bible,
- 35:15Speaker 3: and you're like, I got it tough.
- 35:17Speaker 5: I was cleaning shit today. So while you think that
- 35:23Speaker 5: you're having a tough time reading your Bible, sitting on
- 35:25Speaker 5: your phone, I'm.
- 35:27Speaker 3: There trying my hardest not to get doo-doo under my fingernails, bro.
- 35:31Speaker 5: Someone else is doing it. Oh, you don't get gloves? Yeah,
- 35:33Speaker 5: I got grabbed. I'm just trying to make it sound
- 35:34Speaker 5: worse than it was.
- 35:35Speaker 3: The longer I spend in this jail, the clearer it
- 35:38Speaker 3: becomes how challenging this environment can be, especially if you're
- 35:42Speaker 3: mentally vulnerable.
- 35:45Speaker 5: So you not only have diabetes, but you suffer with depression.
- 35:47Speaker 5: You suffer with depression. Have you ever had any issues?
- 35:50Speaker 5: What have you had to deal with? Depression as well.
- 35:52Speaker 9: Depression.
- 35:53Speaker 3: So do you think then if people were genuinely honest
- 35:56Speaker 3: when it came to being booked in and ticked the
- 35:58Speaker 3: right boxes, there would be a much higher number of people...
- 36:03Speaker 3: that the institution we're aware of that need help and
- 36:07Speaker 3: have psychological issues or mental health problems.
- 36:10Speaker 14: Right, right.
- 36:11Speaker 5: Good night, brother.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Just based on my own personal experiences and based on
- 36:26Speaker 3: some of the things that I've been through in my
- 36:28Speaker 3: own life, it's very easy for me to spiral downwards
- 36:32Speaker 3: when things get difficult, you know, and to go into
- 36:34Speaker 3: myself and to not want to really communicate or not
- 36:38Speaker 3: really want to express myself. And I think that that's
- 36:40Speaker 3: what's happened with Alex. He's definitely spiralled downwards at several points.
- 36:45Speaker 3: I thought that this place would be about the physical.
- 36:48Speaker 3: I thought that it would be about aggression. I thought
- 36:50Speaker 3: it would be about throwing your weight around and making
- 36:52Speaker 3: sure that people wouldn't mess with you. And in reality, really,
- 36:57Speaker 3: it's about what's happening in your own mind. And it's
- 37:00Speaker 3: about the battle that you are fighting with yourself and
- 37:04Speaker 3: letting anxiety and depression beat you. They're the two things
- 37:09Speaker 3: that everybody I speak to seems to suffer with. They're
- 37:12Speaker 3: the two things that everybody I speak to says this
- 37:15Speaker 3: place magnifies. Which you can understand because if you're sleeping
- 37:19Speaker 3: in here every night, of course you're going to get depressed.
- 37:22Speaker 3: Of course you're going to feel anxious.
- 37:38Speaker 8: Yo.
- 37:39Speaker 5: Just feeling that little bit of sun on your face.
- 37:43Speaker 8: Real nice, man.
- 37:43Speaker 5: It's pathetic. I feel ridiculous.
- 37:47Speaker 3: But just not seeing the sunlight is enough to make
- 37:51Speaker 3: you get excited about this.
- 37:53Speaker 5: I can honestly say that I've never been in a
- 38:00Speaker 5: situation this impressive before. I've never... I've never sort of had.
- 38:07Speaker 5: I've had these feelings.
- 38:10Speaker 3: Of frustration, of being out of control, and I'm not
- 38:13Speaker 3: a control freak, but for my entire adult life, I've
- 38:16Speaker 3: been in charge of where I go, what I do,
- 38:18Speaker 3: when I eat, what I eat, and having that taken away,
- 38:21Speaker 3: I mean, it's a small thing, but you're under a
- 38:24Speaker 3: microscope here, and everything feels magnified, everything feels bigger, everything
- 38:28Speaker 3: feels exaggerated. I don't like what this is doing to
- 38:32Speaker 3: my mind, and I don't like how strong I'm needing
- 38:36Speaker 3: to be to silence certain anxieties or some feelings of
- 38:45Speaker 3: depression even. Now that room is depressive. The fact you
- 38:50Speaker 3: can't turn the light out is oppressive. If I was
- 38:54Speaker 3: in a lesser state of mind, I'd be really worried
- 38:57Speaker 3: for myself, me and him. Because I'm starting to see
- 39:01Speaker 3: how this place messes with me. This morning, I'm going
- 39:10Speaker 3: to speak to the man in charge of the day-to-day
- 39:12Speaker 3: running of this jail, Deputy Chief Reyes. What does that mean?
- 39:21Speaker 4: As soon as I meet him, there's an incident that
- 39:23Speaker 4: needs his attention.
- 39:24Speaker 14: Hello.
- 39:30Speaker 11: Got to stay with you, I forget that.
- 39:34Speaker 5: You look like an inmate running around. Inmate running probably
- 39:38Speaker 5: doesn't go down very well, I'm sure. Oh, this is
- 39:42Speaker 5: pretty fitting.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Music on the way out to Code 2, as you do.
- 39:51Speaker 5: Just hold on.
- 39:51Speaker 7: Hold on.
- 39:52Speaker 15: Watch out.
- 39:53Speaker 5: Watch out. Move it. Move out of the way. Yeah,
- 39:56Speaker 5: stay to the side. Stay to the side. Stay to
- 40:01Speaker 5: the side. Move to the side.
- 40:02Speaker 10: Move, move, move, move, move, move. Let's go. Return back
- 40:09Speaker 10: to your cell.
- 40:21Speaker 5: So what happens is you have what we call a
- 40:23Speaker 5: disruptive inmate.
- 40:24Speaker 11: So the officer initiated code 2 so the response team
- 40:28Speaker 11: can come to the unit and prevent the.
- 40:31Speaker 5: Incident from escalating into a use of force or to
- 40:33Speaker 5: a fight. So who exactly are the team? I saw
- 40:35Speaker 5: them in the mental.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Health unit, but these guys moved a lot quicker today.
- 40:39Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 40:40Speaker 11: So the individuals dressing green are what we call our
- 40:42Speaker 11: special emergency response team. It's a really neat feature to
- 40:46Speaker 11: have in our facility. but they've received special training in
- 40:49Speaker 11: not only weapons and tactics, but in crisis negotiation, hostage negotiation, firefighting.
- 40:55Speaker 5: Have you ever had anything like that happen to you? No,
- 40:58Speaker 5: luckily we've never had to deal with the hostage issue here.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Once the situation is settled down, Chief Reyes explains the
- 41:04Speaker 3: pressures the system faces in handling mental health.
- 41:10Speaker 11: We're seeing this all across America, that the jails are
- 41:12Speaker 11: becoming the de facto mental health facilities with the defunding,
- 41:18Speaker 11: of mental health hospitals. The mental health inmates end up
- 41:21Speaker 11: making their way into jails and our primary purpose is security.
- 41:25Speaker 11: We end up having to serve as a treatment facility.
- 41:28Speaker 3: So if the jail is acting as a treatment facility
- 41:30Speaker 3: and you're treating people, how responsible for these inmates once
- 41:33Speaker 3: they've been treated and their time.
- 41:34Speaker 5: Served are you guys?
- 41:37Speaker 11: While they're in our custody, we're completely responsible for them,
- 41:39Speaker 11: whether their mental health or not. Once they get released,
- 41:42Speaker 11: then the responsibility falls on them to do follow-up care.
- 41:45Speaker 11: And we try to connect them with the services out
- 41:46Speaker 11: in the community so they can continue those.
- 41:48Speaker 5: Care, those medications. They're not going to do that, are they?
- 41:50Speaker 11: But we can't force them to do it. They're all adults.
- 41:53Speaker 11: We'll reach out to their families sometimes. We have certain
- 41:56Speaker 11: restrictions on release. So if we know that there's a
- 41:58Speaker 11: mental health individual who doesn't do very well at night,
- 42:00Speaker 11: we have what we call a daylight release.
- 42:02Speaker 5: You can't do that for everyone, though. If I were
- 42:04Speaker 5: a citizen....
- 42:06Speaker 3: I wouldn't expect you guys to be running checkups on everyone.
- 42:09Speaker 3: I'd expect you to be focused on the people coming
- 42:11Speaker 3: through the door. So you can't be responsible for the
- 42:13Speaker 3: people once they leave.
- 42:14Speaker 11: The jail doesn't have the resources to do that aftercare follow-up,
- 42:18Speaker 11: if you will. But there are programs out in the
- 42:20Speaker 11: community that specialize in that. And it's a matter of
- 42:22Speaker 11: connecting those individuals with those resources.
- 42:26Speaker 5: But like with anything, we can't force them to do it.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Returning to the AA unit, I hear Alex has had
- 42:45Speaker 3: some good news. He's been given a job while he's
- 42:48Speaker 3: in jail and could, in the next month, be moved
- 42:51Speaker 3: to a rehab facility to complete his sentence.
- 42:54Speaker 5: How much longer does that mean you'll be in here?
- 42:56Speaker 5: A week or two, maybe three tops. How do you
- 43:00Speaker 5: think you're coping here for another week? Because you've been
- 43:02Speaker 5: kind of up and down.
- 43:04Speaker 14: I got people here, good people here.
- 43:06Speaker 5: And you've got a job now too, so you've got
- 43:08Speaker 5: something to keep you up. Yeah, I got a job.
- 43:10Speaker 5: I'm feeding people now.
- 43:11Speaker 3: So you're feeling comfortable and you're feeling.
- 43:15Speaker 5: Confident in being here for more time. I got a
- 43:18Speaker 5: boy right here.
- 43:18Speaker 14: I got D, my boy right here.
- 43:20Speaker 5: There are good people. Yeah, they're all good people.
- 43:24Speaker 3: One of the things that did worry me about you
- 43:26Speaker 3: on the first night was that you were having suicidal
- 43:28Speaker 3: feelings and suicidal thoughts.
- 43:30Speaker 5: Is that the case now? Do you think that that
- 43:32Speaker 5: might happen again?
- 43:36Speaker 14: It makes me think it, but knowing that I have
- 43:39Speaker 14: so much that if I did, I'd have so much.
- 43:42Speaker 5: To lose, you know, so it's not worth it. I'm
- 43:45Speaker 5: not going to be here for long. But I don't
- 43:47Speaker 5: want to get too comfortable either. I don't want to
- 43:50Speaker 5: be there at all. It's not a good place to live. So, yeah,
- 43:54Speaker 5: I'm going to keep my head up strong.
- 43:56Speaker 14: Even if I have bad thoughts, I'm going to just
- 43:59Speaker 14: pray to God.
- 43:59Speaker 5: That's what I do all the time when I have
- 44:02Speaker 5: bad thoughts. Just pray to God. That's what my mom says.
- 44:05Speaker 5: She says it can rain for a long time, but
- 44:07Speaker 5: it can't rain forever.
- 44:08Speaker 3: I'm not sad to leave at all. I'm not sad
- 44:13Speaker 3: to see the back of this place. But I feel...
- 44:16Speaker 3: Really shit for these guys because they've got to stay here.
- 44:19Speaker 3: A lot of people have got to stay here for
- 44:20Speaker 3: a hell of a long time as well. And you
- 44:22Speaker 3: know they're good kids most of them. They've just done
- 44:24Speaker 3: some stupid things to get here.
- 44:25Speaker 5: I don't know man I mean.
- 44:29Speaker 3: Nobody's here by accident. Everybody's done something. But in my
- 44:33Speaker 3: humble opinion should they all be here? Should they all
- 44:36Speaker 3: be in jail for what they've done?
- 44:37Speaker 13: No.
- 44:38Speaker 3: Come on man if you're 19 and you steal a
- 44:40Speaker 3: t-shirt should you go to jail for a month?
- 44:46Speaker 5: I just breathe resentment. I don't think that that rehabilitates.
- 44:50Speaker 3: So I am looking forward to getting my ass out
- 44:54Speaker 3: of here because this isn't a place for me by
- 44:56Speaker 3: any means. But, you know, I've met some good people
- 45:00Speaker 3: who've done some stupid things and hopefully won't be seeing this.
- 45:03Speaker 5: Place again, but who knows?
- 45:09Speaker 3: I'll be leaving tomorrow morning and as Alex is due
- 45:11Speaker 3: to start a night shift in his new job, I
- 45:14Speaker 3: say my goodbyes now.
- 45:18Speaker 13: Oh. Hey, Reggie.
- 45:21Speaker 5: By the time you wake up in the morning, I'll
- 45:23Speaker 5: probably be out of here.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Because I want to go first thing pretty much about 10,
- 45:28Speaker 3: 11 o'clock, I reckon.
- 45:29Speaker 5: I'll be out of here. So you'll still be working,
- 45:32Speaker 5: if not fast asleep, right? Yeah.
- 45:35Speaker 4: Pleasure meeting you, man.
- 45:36Speaker 5: You too, Reggie. Come here, bro. Hey, I never got
- 45:41Speaker 5: your last name. Yates. Yates?
- 45:45Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 45:45Speaker 8: Hey.
- 45:46Speaker 5: Not Gates, Yates. All right, all right, all right, all right.
- 45:50Speaker 5: Keep your head up, man. Reggie Yates. I'm going to
- 45:53Speaker 5: look you up, man. Please do.
- 45:54Speaker 10: All right.
- 45:55Speaker 3: All right, there's no direct windows to the sunlight, so
- 46:14Speaker 3: you have to sort of judge by it. Little bits
- 46:16Speaker 3: of light that come through and it looks like there
- 46:20Speaker 3: might just be a nice bit of sun out there.
- 46:25Speaker 14: Today.
- 46:25Speaker 5: Day for release, I think. Hey, be careful, bro. I'm out.
- 46:51Speaker 3: Nice to meet you, man.
- 46:56Speaker 5: Nice to meet you. That's so crazy, just being this
- 47:26Speaker 5: close to the exit, the way you can really feel.
- 47:29Speaker 3: You can feel how different the air feels in your face,
- 47:31Speaker 3: and it just smells different in there as well.
- 47:34Speaker 10: All right, sir, give me a period.
- 47:37Speaker 5: If you have a seat on that metal bench, we'll
- 47:39Speaker 5: be right with you.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Yates, Reginald. Good luck. One of each, one at a time.
- 48:00Speaker 3: As my time here comes to an end, I can't
- 48:02Speaker 3: help but question whether jail is the right environment for
- 48:05Speaker 3: some of the inmates I've met. Every item of clothing
- 48:13Speaker 3: I put on, I'm starting to feel more and more
- 48:15Speaker 3: like me again.
- 48:17Speaker 5: It's the strangest feeling in the world. Yes.
- 48:24Speaker 1: This is me.
- 48:36Speaker 3: Incarcerating such large numbers of people for such low-level crimes
- 48:40Speaker 3: seems to create more problems than it solves. Bear County
- 48:50Speaker 3: are doing more for the mentally ill than most jobs.
- 48:57Speaker 3: But the system as a whole has some way to
- 49:00Speaker 3: go before it's really working for those who need it.
- 49:02Speaker 1: My eyes are killing me.
- 49:07Speaker 10: Whoa.
- 49:11Speaker 5: The flies are killing me. Never again.
