- 1:00Hi, my name's Amy and I'm an alcoholic.
- 1:04Hopefully, my story my experience, my strength, and my
- 1:08hope both before. And after recovery, can help
- 1:13somebody with some identification into my story.
- 1:18And hopefully, you can find some parallels between my drinking
- 1:21story in Jaws. So, I first started drinking
- 1:27when I was very young about nine years old.
- 1:30Old. My mom was having a party and
- 1:36she asked me and my siblings to be the like the wine people in
- 1:40the hosts and my brother and sister were quite fine.
- 1:43But I decided to finish off all the dregs of everyone else's
- 1:46drinks and I got quite drunk. Remember a lot of it but I do
- 1:50remember that. It gave me a really good feeling
- 1:53not so much the physical side of it, but emotionally like I just
- 1:59I kind of felt Happy and, you know, like Eddie's, yeah.
- 2:03That idea of eight being at ease and comfort.
- 2:05That was me because I always felt really uncomfortable, had a
- 2:09really dysfunctional, family, and abusive childhood.
- 2:13So being able to do something, which took that away
- 2:17momentarily, was really, really good.
- 2:20So I continue drinking not regularly at that age but by 12
- 2:27you know I was writing the my dad's.
- 2:30I'm cooking Brandy and Masala and he like had a shelf of
- 2:34alcohol out in the open and I just used to drink that, he knew
- 2:38what he knew. I did he didn't really do
- 2:41anything but yeah I would get quite drunk and by the time I
- 2:48was 14, I'd left school and I just started a job and that job
- 2:55was really yeah, really unpleasant.
- 2:58The boss was also abused. Even just horrible and I guess I
- 3:03kind of I'd left school to be able to get free of my family
- 3:07situation because I thought if I could leave school and get
- 3:10independent, you know, I could kind of get get out of that
- 3:14situation. But yeah, my situation just went
- 3:18went from bad to worse and then I started drinking pretty
- 3:21heavily. So I hooked up with another
- 3:24chick who wrote there at the same place and we just both
- 3:29drank a lot. So that age, I could have had
- 3:31two types of drinking one was with this girl at my work.
- 3:36I'm where we just Frank really really badly and heavily really
- 3:39destructively was kind of very Bleak and horrible.
- 3:43And you know, we get into trouble, we get thrown out of
- 3:46pubs, we get barred, you know, all the stupid stuff and then I
- 3:51used to go out for my sister who was older than me, I was the
- 3:54youngest and we go to pubs and clubs and we get people to bars
- 3:59drinking. Just be stupid and look around
- 4:02and it was kind of funny. But yeah, it kind of stopped
- 4:07being funny because by the time I was in my 20s, I was just
- 4:12drinking all the time and there's so much of my Twenties
- 4:16that I just don't remember, I'd had a breakdown.
- 4:20When I was 16, I had been in and out of Institutions, Yan life
- 4:27was just really, really messy. I just didn't know how to
- 4:31navigate life. I knew I wanted something
- 4:34different and I wanted to get out of where I was which was you
- 4:37know living with my family who were really dysfunctional.
- 4:42I was just unhappy and so I tried to get a job in the
- 4:46country is to get the country land newspaper and look for
- 4:50jewelry and jchiarie jobs and I got one but then that didn't
- 4:54work out. So I came back home then I
- 4:57started our school and that was good but And, you know, I just
- 5:01had this right down there were straight down.
- 5:03And, yeah, that was five years in and out of Institutions, that
- 5:07would kind of go in into a hospital.
- 5:10Obviously, I couldn't drink while I was in there, I'd kind
- 5:14of get myself together a little bit.
- 5:16I'd come out and just go into met him again.
- 5:20I was on a lot of medication. I actually have PTSD, but no one
- 5:24knew it back. Then this is a long time ago.
- 5:26No one knew what PTSD was really unless you were a vet.
- 5:30Turan and even then it was not that known.
- 5:32But yeah, I had PTSD PTSD, but none of the doctors needed.
- 5:38So they just diagnose me with everything.
- 5:39They could think of and put me on a whole chunk of medication
- 5:43walking zombie. And I used to read the back of
- 5:45the medications and it was say, don't consume alcohol when
- 5:49you're on this medication and I think, well, that's ridiculous.
- 5:52How can you not consume alcohol? It actually perplexes me.
- 5:56I thought that that. How can you ask someone not to
- 5:59do that? I just thought it was like, my
- 6:01right to consume alcohol. It like how couldn't imagine
- 6:04anything else? And I think, well, great.
- 6:06I'll get more messed up if I'm drinking while I'm also on these
- 6:10medications. Well, I just yeah, I didn't get
- 6:16better. That's for sure.
- 6:19Eventually, I met someone in one of the hospitals that are
- 6:22staining and we both did a geographical right up duct North
- 6:28Queensland and that it was when some parts of my life started to
- 6:32improve. I got away from my family and
- 6:39even though we drank a lot, I was kind of out of that.
- 6:42Toxic environment of going in hospital, getting medicated
- 6:48coming home being in back of my family, doing stupid staff
- 6:54drinking, you know, being out of sorts.
- 6:57And then back again, it was just such a such Merry-Go-Round was
- 7:01really, really horrible. So yeah, I was able to kind of
- 7:06get out of that and I always manage to find other people who
- 7:12drank heavily like like I did. And this person was very much
- 7:17like that and we just we just spent a lot of time just
- 7:20drinking drinking so much, I life was just so looking back.
- 7:24Was so Bleak was just nothing in it, just drinking away.
- 7:30Waking up. It was had a cleaning job, going
- 7:32clean, come back and do it all again.
- 7:36We went from Ken's to Melbourne and back then it was really easy
- 7:42to rent. I was on the pension.
- 7:44So, you know, money wasn't a huge issue.
- 7:47Rentals were really cheap in Melbourne, and so we just rented
- 7:51this really beautiful house, but all we did, every day was just
- 7:56drink, drink drink drink, it's just I'm looking back as like I
- 8:00just spent so much time. Just drinking.
- 8:04Where's all the things? I could have done, man was just
- 8:08so so Bleak and horrible. I used to go into the bottle
- 8:13shop because I never thought I was an alcoholic.
- 8:15I'd grown up with alcoholics. So you know, they're alcoholics
- 8:19in my life were all the really horrible kind, you know, just
- 8:23smashed all the time, you know, doing stupid things on drugs as
- 8:28well. So, in my mind, I knew I knew
- 8:30what an alcoholic was and I wasn't one.
- 8:34So I used to think, well, you know, this is just what you do,
- 8:38you just drink, you drink it, you know, drink whenever you
- 8:41can, you smoke, I was a chain smoker and then you do other
- 8:46stuff in between, but the main part was, you know what Boozer,
- 8:51were you going to get tonight? But yeah, I used to go into a
- 8:54bottle shop and pretend that I didn't know about alcohol.
- 8:57It was just so stupid because I Embarrassed I get embarrassed
- 9:01that I was going into the same bottle shops all the time, and
- 9:04buying booze and bind so much of it.
- 9:06And I think we'll this person's got to see me and think I got a
- 9:09problem and I don't want them to do that.
- 9:12I lived in, you know, and kind of Melbourne close to the city.
- 9:15So there were a lot of Arc, a lot of bottle shops around so
- 9:19you know we were able to kind of go to different bottle shops but
- 9:22even so I felt like I was going too much to you know, do one
- 9:27particular Bottle Shop, you know, or another one.
- 9:30Or another one. I think they're going to know
- 9:32that I've got a problem. Even though I didn't want to
- 9:36think that I had a problem. I wouldn't have said it said so
- 9:39myself. So I used to go into the bottle
- 9:42shop and I'd say I'm just, I'm looking for like a cooking wine,
- 9:47you know, something not too expensive.
- 9:49I don't really know much about alcohol.
- 9:51Can you show me something? And I just, I just strung up
- 9:54this ridiculous things like that.
- 9:57It's just, I don't know. It's laughable, really?
- 10:00Because I just couldn't I couldn't I just lived in so much
- 10:05denial. I lived in like denial that my
- 10:07life was so Bleak and empty, I lived in denial that I was
- 10:12shortly. My Life by Chain smoking and
- 10:14drinking so much. I lived in denial that I had no
- 10:17hope. I just kind of lived day to day
- 10:21but each day was so full of nothing.
- 10:25I had plans but I couldn't continue.
- 10:27I could have followed them through one stage.
- 10:30And I was really interested in religion, so I researched a lot
- 10:32of religion and at one stage, I thought I was going to become a
- 10:36Buddhist and so I called up the the local Monastery and talk to
- 10:43them about Buddhism, but about Buddhism and it turned out, that
- 10:48one of the things I asked you to do was to refrain from alcohol.
- 10:52I thought white, there's no way I can do that and and so I let
- 10:57that go. So just things like that.
- 11:00Anyway, my mom who lived in New South Wales she'd had cancer and
- 11:06she came out of her Mission. So I felt that I should go home
- 11:10and be with her because she heard counselor become terminal
- 11:14so that process of moving, back to my family I think that was
- 11:20really really bad for me. And I kind of I started to on
- 11:25the surface have all the things that you know, showed like a
- 11:28normal kind of life. Life, you know like I dressed
- 11:31nicely. I went to study.
- 11:35I talked hopley, all that kind of stuff.
- 11:37I drove a car but inside it was an absolute mess and I got
- 11:43pregnant. I celebrated my pregnancy with
- 11:48cocktails. I met a friend at the pub and
- 11:52were talking about my pregnancy and she said well I was talking
- 11:57while I was having a beer and a smoke and she said, well what
- 11:59are you going to do? At those like drinking is
- 12:01making. I said, well, I don't know and I
- 12:03genuinely didn't know what I could do because I couldn't
- 12:06stop. But I guess that was my first
- 12:09miracle in that. I actually did stop, but only
- 12:13while I was pregnant. So I had four children and every
- 12:16time while I was pregnant, I wouldn't drink and generally
- 12:21wouldn't smoke. But then after I had my baby at
- 12:24all, start up again. And by the time I had my last
- 12:27one, the period of me not drinking or smoking.
- 12:30Making had was just getting shorter and shorter.
- 12:33So you know, towards the start of the, my pregnancy and towards
- 12:36the end of my pregnancy and sometimes he between not be
- 12:38drinking when I was breastfeeding, I wouldn't care
- 12:44really about because I was soon as I had the baby, that's it.
- 12:46You know, I'll be drinking heavily and so you know I'd know
- 12:50that I'd be breastfed in and kind of giving the baby alcohol
- 12:55but I wasn't able to really do much about it.
- 12:57So being, you know, in the shower See my milk but I'd be so
- 13:01drunk. I got into a properly and then
- 13:02my baby want to feed and it was just terrible.
- 13:05Really, really terrible way to live.
- 13:09But what happened was I got married and that was a disaster
- 13:14and then became homeless because my marriage is quite abusive and
- 13:20I think that process of becoming homeless and experiencing some
- 13:24really bad. Violence was something that was
- 13:29mine. I kind of my Breaking Point up
- 13:31until then I knew my life was really really bad and messy and
- 13:37unpleasant I knew I couldn't hold onto things.
- 13:41I knew I wasn't healthy. I knew I was drinking too much.
- 13:44I didn't think I was an alcoholic, but I knew I was
- 13:46drinking too much. I didn't like it, but I couldn't
- 13:48do anything about it. But when I became homeless and
- 13:51when I was really broken, that was my first experience of
- 13:54handing over. And that was to the services
- 13:58that were involved in mine and mine.
- 14:00Laurens case. And I think I really needed to
- 14:04be kind of pushed into that experience of handing over, so
- 14:08that I could actually experience the process of letting go of my
- 14:11life or letting go control of my life.
- 14:15And that then, in turn allow me when later when I was introduced
- 14:21into the fellowship properly, to, then the experience or two,
- 14:26then know a little bit of what that process of handing over.
- 14:30It is and that I could do it and, you know, everything wasn't
- 14:34going to fall apart in that things were going to get better.
- 14:37So, I'd gone into a detox program.
- 14:40Detox program before I became hot become homeless and that
- 14:43program was a 12-step program and so that introduced me to the
- 14:47fellowship and even though I didn't get it and it just seemed
- 14:52like it was a bunch of weirdos and you know, I thought this is
- 14:56it for me. It's never going to work.
- 14:57I thought I was different and special.
- 15:00And, you know, to broken into this.
- 15:02And to that, what it did do was it showed me that there was
- 15:06something that worked for some people?
- 15:08Even if I didn't think it could work for me when nothing else I
- 15:12saw had worked for anyone around me in my circles and so by the
- 15:18time I'd ended up in another homeless shelter with my kids in
- 15:22this tiny little country town. I decided to go down to my local
- 15:27meeting and Even though I'd have gone down there in the hope of
- 15:32finding someone who has so many drugs, because I was in the tiny
- 15:35country town. And I didn't know anyone.
- 15:37What actually happened was, I went there and I had my first
- 15:41experience of identification where I listen to Somebody
- 15:45sharing something and I recognize what they were sharing
- 15:50in myself and in my own history and it was just a little
- 15:53snippet, but it was just enough for something to click with him,
- 15:57me and something changed. Changed.
- 16:01And like I think that everyone is different like that point
- 16:05when something Clicks in something ships but for me, it
- 16:09was that moment of identification and really from
- 16:13that point on my life, really, genuinely started to shift and
- 16:18turn and so, once I was able to identify at my local meeting
- 16:26that meant that I could suddenly have a glimmer of hope that
- 16:29maybe Be this program which I could see generally worked for
- 16:33other people. Maybe it could work for me
- 16:36because maybe I wasn't completely different.
- 16:39You know I wasn't like an alien sitting in sitting on Earth
- 16:42maybe I was just another Earthling sitting in a meeting
- 16:46and maybe something that these people were talking about good
- 16:50work for me and that was my little bit of Hope and that
- 16:54really wasn't enough for me to build on and I Certainly didn't
- 17:01get a straight away, I had Tom's where I picked up again, it took
- 17:05me probably about another two or three years to really come into
- 17:09sobriety properly and more homelessness and more trouble.
- 17:13But what happened was when ever I decided to drink or drug
- 17:17because by then I'd picked up a nasty drug habit.
- 17:22I couldn't do it in a certain way anymore because I knew what
- 17:25I was doing and I knew that there was an answer to what I
- 17:32was doing. I couldn't say any more.
- 17:35Well, I just can't do, I can't stop, because I knew I could.
- 17:39And that really took away in a way, the innocence and the
- 17:43ability to drink and Drug in the same way.
- 17:47Thank goodness. So eventually, when I came to a
- 17:53point where, you know, the kids and I have become homeless again
- 17:58and I'd picked up again. Um, we'd moved to South
- 18:01Australia, and throughout all our time of being homeless, in
- 18:05South Australia. I hadn't drank and I hadn't
- 18:08drugged, but I hadn't gone to meetings when we got to our
- 18:12place where we are now, my kids said, mom, why don't you go to a
- 18:16meeting? Because they had seen enough of
- 18:19me in the fellowship and in sobriety, even though they are
- 18:25young, they could know that. That's what that's what was
- 18:28needed in order. Order for us to have some
- 18:31stability because we managed to land a rental and I think they
- 18:36wanted to keep it. They would have been sick of
- 18:38being homeless. It wasn't fun.
- 18:40I lost our last homelessness was really rough.
- 18:42We were living in a tender was horrible.
- 18:45And so, yeah. They said, mom, why don't you go
- 18:47to a meeting and, you know, I do believe that my higher power
- 18:50speaks through people, when I need to hear things and I needed
- 18:55to hear that and I did go to my local meeting.
- 19:00And yeah, I've been clean and sober seven years now over seven
- 19:05years. And yeah, I think when I, when I
- 19:10went to my local meeting that became my home group and that's
- 19:14when things things really fell into place.
- 19:19I started to really, to really love myself to allow people to
- 19:24love me and care for me. I started to learn to trust
- 19:28people again. And I started to do the things
- 19:31that the program asks, me to do, which is to get a sponsor to be
- 19:37open and honest, just with that one person.
- 19:40I'd that's all I needed to do just that one person, which was
- 19:42my sponsor. I ended up being open and honest
- 19:45with other people, but that was Central to go through the steps
- 19:51to, you know, practice living in the day, each day to practice,
- 19:57connecting with my higher power, All these things were Central to
- 20:04my recovery and yeah, the program for me it's not just one
- 20:11thing. It's a whole lot of things.
- 20:14Alcohol is so isolating. So having a fellowship where you
- 20:18can connect with other people, that's so important.
- 20:22For me was so important. So going to meetings is really
- 20:24Central to my recovery. Connecting with my higher power
- 20:28is really essential Meditating even though I'm crap at, I can
- 20:32only do a couple of minutes, that's really Central to my my
- 20:34recovery because that's when I kind of connect my higher power
- 20:40and meditate. That's my daddy process of
- 20:43handing over because handing over is crucial to my recovery.
- 20:46Because if I, if I take back control of my life, I do it
- 20:51badly. And it's important that I don't
- 20:55and I'll always be like that, but that's okay.
- 20:59And yeah. Connecting with other people is
- 21:01really important. Well, I think that's probably
- 21:06that's me in a nutshell. I hope it's been helpful and
- 21:10yeah, good luck in your own recovery.
- 21:13It's a really beautiful amazing thing.
- 21:15I wouldn't want to change it for anything.
- 21:18Thanks. We have local meetings for the
- 21:23full week in the local area. Monday is Golem meeting at 8:00
