- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:14It's the 24th of June. So glad to have your company as
- 0:18we are continuing making our way through Deuteronomy, which
- 0:23literally is the second law. And this is a book that, well,
- 0:28it's caused so much consternation and confusion to
- 0:31biblical scholars for such a long time.
- 0:33And it was really actually not that long ago, even in my
- 0:36lifetime in 1979, when Steven Kaufman sat down and and pulled
- 0:42the book apart and came up with the theory of the structure of
- 0:46the book actually mirroring the 10 commandments.
- 0:49And that has kind of revolutionised how people see
- 0:52the book and work their way through it.
- 0:53And we are at the moment in a part, and you might think, well,
- 0:57yesterday's reading had very little to do with not misusing
- 1:00God's name, but looking at the theme more broadly about
- 1:03commitment to God yesterday and today.
- 1:06And then before we wrap up today, we kind of begin the next
- 1:08section, which cracks open the things that we owe God, like
- 1:12tithe. So let's do it.
- 1:14Let us continue to unpack what it looks like to keep God at the
- 1:19centre of our lives as we read together Deuteronomy chapter 14.
- 1:35Since you are the people of the Lord your God, never cut
- 1:39yourselves or shave the hair above your foreheads in mourning
- 1:42for the dead. You have been set apart as holy
- 1:46to the Lord your God, and He has chosen you from all the nations
- 1:50of the earth to be His own special treasure.
- 1:54You must not eat any detestable animals that are ceremonially
- 1:58unclean. These are the animals you may
- 2:00eat, the ox, the sheep, the goat, the deer, the gazelle, the
- 2:06Rd deer, the wild goat, the addicts, the antelope, and the
- 2:11mountain sheep. You may eat any animal that has
- 2:15completely split hooves and chews the cud, but if the animal
- 2:19doesn't have both, it may not be eaten.
- 2:22So you may not eat the camel, the hare, or the hyrax.
- 2:26They chew the cud but do not have split hooves, so they are
- 2:30ceremonially unclean for you. And you may not eat the pig.
- 2:35It has split hooves but does not chew the cud, so it is
- 2:38ceremonially unclean for you. You may not eat the meat of
- 2:42these animals, or even touch their carcasses.
- 2:46Of all the marine animals, you may eat whatever has both fins
- 2:51and scales. You may not, however, eat marine
- 2:54animals that do not have both fins and scales.
- 2:57They are ceremonially unclean for you.
- 3:01You may eat any bird that is ceremonially clean.
- 3:04These are the birds you may not eat.
- 3:07The gryphon vulture, the bearded vulture, The black vulture, the
- 3:11kite, The Falcon, buzzards of all kinds, Ravens of all kinds.
- 3:17The eagle owl, The short eared owl, The seagull, Hawks of all
- 3:22kinds. The little owl, The great owl,
- 3:25The barn owl, The desert owl, The Egyptian vulture, The
- 3:28cormorant, The stork, herons of all kinds, The hoopoo, and the
- 3:33bat. All winged insects that can walk
- 3:37along the ground are ceremonially uncleaned for you
- 3:40and may not be eaten, but you may eat any winged bird or
- 3:43insect that is ceremonially clean.
- 3:47You must not eat anything that has died a natural death.
- 3:50You may give it to a foreigner living in your town, or you may
- 3:54sell it to a stranger, but do not eat it yourselves, for you
- 3:57are set apart as holy to the Lord your God.
- 4:01You must not cook a young goat in its mother's milk.
- 4:07You must set aside a tithe of your crops, 110th of all the
- 4:11crops you harvest each year. Bring this tithe to the
- 4:14designated place of worship, the place the Lord your God chooses
- 4:18for His name to be honoured, and eat it there in His presence.
- 4:23This applies to your tithes of grain, new wine, olive oil, and
- 4:28the first born males of your flocks and herds.
- 4:31Doing this will teach you always to fear the Lord your God.
- 4:35Now when the Lord your God blesses you with a good harvest,
- 4:38the place of worship He chooses for His name to be honoured
- 4:42might be too far for you to bring the tithe.
- 4:44If so, you must sell the tithe portion of your crops and herds,
- 4:48put the money in a pouch and go to the place the Lord your God
- 4:52has chosen. When you arrive, you may use the
- 4:55money to buy any kind of food you want, cattle, sheep, goats,
- 4:59wine or other alcoholic drink. Then feast there in the presence
- 5:03of the Lord your God and celebrate with your household.
- 5:07And do not neglect the Levites in your town, for they will
- 5:10receive no allotment of land among you.
- 5:14At the end of every 3rd year, bring the entire tithe of that
- 5:18year's harvest and store it in the nearest town.
- 5:21Give it to the Levites who will receive no allotment of land
- 5:25among you, as well as to the foreigners living among you, the
- 5:28orphans and the widows in your towns, so they can eat and be
- 5:32satisfied. Then the Lord your God will
- 5:35bless you in all your work. Jesus, in these words that we
- 5:50read, we see so clearly that we are set apart.
- 5:55We are not to be the same as everyone else, but you have a
- 5:59special way for us to be, a way for us to interact with the
- 6:03world, a way that uses a lens. A lens primarily fine tunes to
- 6:10seeing you and everything. You as our provider and our
- 6:15Lord, You as our Heavenly Father who looks after us.
- 6:21And Lord, it may not be wanting to eat bats or the desert owl,
- 6:25but certainly there will be things in our lives that look
- 6:28awfully tempting and simple and easy and just so convenient to
- 6:32do, things that we know probably aren't what You would want for
- 6:36us. Our Lord, I pray when those
- 6:40desires tempt our hearts that you sharpen that lens before us,
- 6:45that we continue to engage with the world as you're blessed
- 6:49people, chosen and loved by you, set apart to be holy, and your
- 6:54special possession, Ah, we just claim our identity as your
- 7:00special ones. And we are so grateful that you
- 7:04would call U.S. special. And so we give ourselves to you
- 7:09again and pray that you use us as you would have us and hold us
- 7:15ever close. And we pray this all in your
- 7:17name, Jesus, Amen.
