- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello team, welcome to the show. Hope you're having an awesome
- 0:25week this week. Today in this episode, we are
- 0:27going to talk about energy. We're going to talk about
- 0:30something that I call energy leaks.
- 0:33You know, when I I think about impact, I think about four
- 0:36different pillars that influence our ability to be consistent
- 0:40with our influence and powerful so that we get the results that
- 0:45we want in our life. So that we can create the life
- 0:48of our dreams, so that we have great relationships, so that we
- 0:52are very effective leaders. I mean, there's so many things
- 0:57that we want for ourselves and these 4 pillars are are so
- 1:00important when it comes to that. They are energy, purpose,
- 1:04consistency, and ownership. Those are the four pillars.
- 1:08And This is why I talk about these four things so often in
- 1:12different ways in this podcast. I truly think that if we are
- 1:16paying attention to these different buckets, we've got a
- 1:19recipe for getting some really good success in our life.
- 1:24So today I want to talk about energy, and this is a huge one,
- 1:28an extremely important bucket in our life because without energy,
- 1:32we really can't do much of anything.
- 1:34I mean, if you think about a time when you were, say, sick,
- 1:37laying on the couch. At one point you were depleted,
- 1:40you were totally drained. You're feeling like maybe you
- 1:42had one or two out of 10 energy. I'm venturing to guess that
- 1:47wasn't a very productive day for you.
- 1:49We all know what that feels like.
- 1:51And yet so many people are walking around in their daily
- 1:55life with three or four or five out of 10 energy.
- 1:59It's their normal. And they wonder why they aren't
- 2:02getting the results that they want in their life.
- 2:04I know this because in the treatment room in the clinic, I
- 2:08would ask every single patient who would sit in that chair in
- 2:11front of me, hey, what's your perceived energy?
- 2:14Average energy on a scale of 1 to 1010 being great.
- 2:17And so many people would say I'm a three.
- 2:21Maybe I'm a 5 on average. Yeah, I'm about a four.
- 2:24It's a real thing. People, in reality, humans are
- 2:29meant to have really good energy.
- 2:31And I think we forget this. We forget that we're built for
- 2:34it to have fantastic energy that we are engineered for.
- 2:38It's how our bodies are are meant to work.
- 2:40A healthy human is supposed to have 9 or 10 out of 10 energy.
- 2:45That's our Physiology. But there are a lot of things
- 2:48that drain our battery. You have all the physical things
- 2:52that can drain you, like poor diet, drinking a lot of alcohol,
- 2:56different drugs or medications, toxins in the environment, not
- 3:00taking care of our bodies, illnesses, chronic disease.
- 3:04All those things are physical and there's so many more.
- 3:08And then you have all the mental and emotional things that can
- 3:12drain your energy. Chronic stress is a huge one.
- 3:16Distraction, overwhelm, being inundated with information,
- 3:22having unresolved feelings or emotions, trauma, all of those
- 3:27things can drain your mental and physical energy.
- 3:29And this is kind of what I want to focus on today, this specific
- 3:33aspect of what drains our energy.
- 3:37I think about these mental, emotional drains on our energy
- 3:40as energy leaks. Where and when does our energy
- 3:45leak out of us? This is a really powerful
- 3:47question to ask yourself. It's something that I ask
- 3:50myself, especially if you've been feeling low energy or just
- 3:54chronically drained in your life.
- 3:58You know, like we said, there's a lot of things that can drain
- 4:00our energy. In general, I think of an energy
- 4:03leak as something that you put energy into, but it doesn't give
- 4:07you any energy back. There's no reciprocity in this
- 4:11situation, meaning your battery just ends up getting drained.
- 4:14So what could be draining us? The first thing that comes to
- 4:19mind is relationships. Relationships can be a place
- 4:23where there are huge energy leaks.
- 4:25If you have relationships that you're pouring into, but you're
- 4:28not getting a lot back, you're leaking energy.
- 4:31If you're spending a lot of your mental bandwidth taking on other
- 4:35people's emotions or trying to manage their bad moods or their
- 4:39stress or their tiredness. If you're walking on egg shells
- 4:43around somebody, you're leaking energy.
- 4:47If you're in a relationship where there's a lack of
- 4:49responsiveness, and we just talked about responsiveness in
- 4:52one of our past episodes, meaning a lack of care or
- 4:55understanding, and yet you're pouring into this person, that's
- 4:59an energy leak. Imagine energy draining out like
- 5:04a sieve. The more time you spend in the
- 5:06situation, the more of it leaks out.
- 5:10We find ourselves in these situations all the time, and
- 5:13this is where radical ownership comes in, because ultimately
- 5:17it's not our job to own other people's emotions or feelings.
- 5:22We can be responsive to them, of course.
- 5:24We can do our part to show up in the way that we want to in that
- 5:27friendship or that relationship. But when we start taking on the
- 5:31feelings and the states of emotion of other people as if
- 5:33they were our own, that's where we get into trouble.
- 5:37That's where the energy starts to leak for two big reasons,
- 5:40really. The first one, there's no
- 5:43changing that person. You don't have agency to change
- 5:47somebody else. It's not something that you have
- 5:49the ability to do. That can only happen with their
- 5:52own initiative, with their own personal ownership and their
- 5:56self-awareness. Secondly, to be in a constant
- 6:00state of management of somebody else's feelings and emotions.
- 6:04That's not reciprocity and it will never result in you
- 6:07charging up your battery. What are some other places that
- 6:12we might be leaking energy? Some really big ones are screens
- 6:17and distraction. Actually.
- 6:20Those things go hand in hand. One often causes the other, but
- 6:24we can look at them separately as well.
- 6:26Screens are a huge energy leak. They really don't give us
- 6:30anything back. They require a lot of our own
- 6:33energy. It is a drain.
- 6:36On top of that, screens create specific thinking patterns in
- 6:40our brain, and you're going to hear a lot about this in up and
- 6:43coming research. They cause short attention
- 6:45spans, they cause a dopamine addiction because we always want
- 6:48that hit of new entertainment. And frankly, it's massive
- 6:52overstimulation based on the amount of information that's
- 6:55coming at us every single second.
- 6:57And this often leads to distraction.
- 7:00So that's the second one. We are so distracted as a
- 7:03society because there's so much digital and energetic clutter in
- 7:09our brains, and this takes away our ability to think creatively.
- 7:13Team to do deep work to connect with people in a quality way.
- 7:20It is a massive leak on our energy.
- 7:23If you just think about a time where you might have been
- 7:25sitting on the couch and you're maybe you're scrolling on
- 7:28whatever social media app you're on or maybe you're reading the
- 7:31news or you're on Reddit or something like that.
- 7:34And all of a sudden half an hour goes by and you look up.
- 7:38Are you in a place where you are ready to jump in and connect
- 7:41with your family and help around the house and think creatively
- 7:45and get a bunch of stuff done? Are you, are you your most
- 7:49productive self in that moment? No, we absolutely know the
- 7:53feeling of being drained and distracted by time on a screen.
- 7:59Now, of course, there are a ton of other ways that we could be
- 8:02leaking energy, and sometimes it's really specific to you as
- 8:06the person. They'll do a little audit on
- 8:08myself and my own energy state, and I'll ask myself, where am I
- 8:13leaking energy? I'll look at each section of my
- 8:16day. So I'll look at the morning,
- 8:18then the afternoon and then the evening.
- 8:19And it's often really easy for me to find where those leaks
- 8:22are. One of my old habits was to wake
- 8:26up and pick up my phone and look at Instagram.
- 8:30It was a habit. It was a bad habit, something
- 8:32that I kind of did to ease myself into the morning.
- 8:35I told myself oh you can just wake up slowly with this but
- 8:38then I realized what am I doing? I'm immediately putting this
- 8:41blue screen light into my eyes. It's causing me to get into an
- 8:45instant state of comparison or feeling like I was behind.
- 8:49It has my brain just spinning. I worrying about all the
- 8:53different things that I could be or should be doing.
- 8:56I have a million different distracted points of information
- 9:00that I'm trying to manage. And I would come out of that and
- 9:02I would realize I never really had a great sense of how much
- 9:04time I was on my phone, which is the nature of these devices.
- 9:07So all of a sudden, so much time had gone by and I realized I had
- 9:12just leaked energy all over the place for the last 45 minutes,
- 9:17which then took away from some of the important quality tasks
- 9:21that I wanted to do in the morning.
- 9:23I've also known for years that if I don't get up and do some
- 9:26sort of exercise or movement in the morning, it causes me to
- 9:30have energy leaks throughout the day.
- 9:32I'm more tired, I'm not as energized, I'm not as
- 9:35enthusiastic, I'm not as focused, and I just don't feel
- 9:39as good in my skin. Another energy leak for me was
- 9:44distraction, and something that really helped me with that is
- 9:47writing my top two or three must do priorities on a sticky note
- 9:53on my desk before I went to bed. That habit has really helped me
- 9:56get a clear agenda for what matters to me in that next day.
- 10:00And sometimes the note has stuff on it like meditate or play a
- 10:05card game with my daughters, but it helps me stay focused and
- 10:09clearer on what matters most so that I'm not getting distracted
- 10:13by little things and just reacting to problems all day
- 10:16long. And then one of the biggest game
- 10:20changers for me has been managing my communication with
- 10:23people because that's one of the biggest energy leaks that I've
- 10:26found in my life. It's very common because our
- 10:29relationships take up a lot of bandwidth for us.
- 10:32So to be having relationships that are not reciprocal, that
- 10:35can be a huge drain. As we've talked about over the
- 10:39past five years, my friendships and my relationships, they've
- 10:44changed a lot. I've had a lot of new people
- 10:46come into my life. I've had some people leave my
- 10:49sphere, and although it's been painful at times, the goal was
- 10:55to remove any drama or situations where I felt like I
- 10:59was having to manage other people's emotions or their
- 11:01feelings, and there wasn't a lot of reciprocity there.
- 11:05The result is that I have some new relationships in my life,
- 11:09friendships and such that are reciprocal, meaning what I pour
- 11:13into them. I get back in love and care and
- 11:17understanding and validation, and those are all the keys to
- 11:20having a quality relationship. I'm also really mindful of how I
- 11:25spend my time on e-mail. That's another form of
- 11:27communication in our modern world is how we converse with
- 11:29people in a digital way. So whether it's e-mail or
- 11:33chatting or messages or whatever, but also being mindful
- 11:37of how I communicate with clients and colleagues because I
- 11:41don't want to be leaking energy in those dynamics either.
- 11:44I have to have really solid, clear boundaries for myself
- 11:48around how often I am checking my e-mail, what times of day I'm
- 11:51responding to people, etcetera, so that I'm not distracted and
- 11:55so that I can preserve my energy and be effective in the other
- 11:58things that I want to do in my life.
- 12:01Now, these are just a few examples.
- 12:03I'm sure that you can think of a lot of your own.
- 12:06You can do an audit on your own life and find where you might
- 12:10have energy leaking in different areas.
- 12:13It's a really powerful exercise to zoom out every week, quarter,
- 12:18whatever it might be, and look at your habits, look at your
- 12:20ways of being during the day. How are you moving about the
- 12:23world? How are you taking care of
- 12:25yourself mentally and emotionally?
- 12:27How is the quality of your relationships?
- 12:28It's helpful to see what might be draining us.
- 12:32And some of these energy leaks might be physical, and that's a
- 12:35different topic for a different day.
- 12:36But for the mental and emotional reasons, those are things that
- 12:40we have massive agency over and you can start identifying those
- 12:44now and start plugging those holes.
- 12:47I think this is a really important conversation for this
- 12:49time of year. It's the beginning of the year.
- 12:51We have an opportunity to revamp some of the ways of operation
- 12:55that we've had for however long and we can start a new, we can
- 12:59create new habits, We can look ahead very thoughtfully about
- 13:02what we want to create and reverse engineer that so that we
- 13:05can show up in those ways. So I encourage you to look at
- 13:10your life this week, ask yourself, what's my energy on a
- 13:14scale of 1 to 10? And if it's lower than you want
- 13:17it to be, look for those leaks and start plugging those holes
- 13:20this year. I hope this helps.
- 13:23I hope we can raise your baseline energy by a point or
- 13:26two in the next month. I think that's a realistic goal.
- 13:29And I think that would be impressive progress.
- 13:32And I'm cheering you on. If you have questions, send me
- 13:35an e-mail at stephsaffer.com. And slowly we can all raise our
- 13:39baseline energy so that we can have that powerful impact that
- 13:42we want in the world. I appreciate you being here.
