- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Summer from kits Navy. I'm drummer and I mainly
- 0:06Speaker 1: write lyrics for the band and we make songs together.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And we are three piece heavy metal band from Oscar,
- 0:15Speaker 1: Japan and we formed in twenty twenty three last year.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And the meaning of kits Navy is fox shaped fire
- 0:24Speaker 1: in English, which is very you know interesting.
- 0:29Speaker 2: There's a bit of a story behind that seriesn't there.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, there's a story like in a very
- 0:34Speaker 1: old Japanese biography, like ancient story, like almost myth. I think,
- 0:39Speaker 1: like there's a man who was lost in the mountain
- 0:43Speaker 1: on the way back to his village and he was,
- 0:48Speaker 1: you know, hopeless and helpless because the night was you know,
- 0:52Speaker 1: yelling old and the darker and the darker, and he
- 0:55Speaker 1: had no way out. But sudden a fo shaped fire
- 1:02Speaker 1: appeared out of nowhere, and that folk shaped fire showed
- 1:06Speaker 1: him the way to hit village. And we are very
- 1:09Speaker 1: much inspired by this story and we want to be like,
- 1:13Speaker 1: you know, okay, so we're gonna be like this fire.
- 1:19Speaker 1: We wanna, i'd say, like show the way to those
- 1:24Speaker 1: who are suffering from every day's life like pain and
- 1:27Speaker 1: going through negative feelings. We won't save them with our music.
- 1:33Speaker 1: So we named ourselves as Kids Navy. That's how it went.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Yeah, very well, thanks for joining us today. It's good
- 1:41Speaker 2: to catch up with you.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you, Thank you very much. We really appreciate.
- 1:45Speaker 2: It all right, man.
- 1:46Speaker 3: So I first came across you guys when I was
- 1:48Speaker 3: on tour in Japan recently with our US clam Rockers
- 1:51Speaker 3: and Midnight Devils. Like to show with you at Gataka
- 1:55Speaker 3: in Kyoto, and I've seen a lot of bands over
- 1:57Speaker 3: there on chores madeen and you guys have probably won
- 2:00Speaker 3: one of the best that I bring your fan mates.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So thank you.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Tell us a bit about the bed like these nine
- 2:08Speaker 3: each other for a while, and I only started last year,
- 2:10Speaker 3: but to beat nine each other for a while.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Well, actually we have known each other for a couple
- 2:16Speaker 1: of years, I guess, like the Kitchen and me the
- 2:20Speaker 1: vocal The Kchen and me we were working at the
- 2:24Speaker 1: same place, like a part time jobs. We were working
- 2:30Speaker 1: at hol Ro Caffee in Japan when we were university
- 2:34Speaker 1: student and uh Kitchen and the Raina, the bassist, they
- 2:40Speaker 1: have been you know together for like I don't know,
- 2:44Speaker 1: like since they were from high school students together in
- 2:48Speaker 1: a band. Yeah, together as a band, I think, well,
- 2:51Speaker 1: probably not, but yeah, so the kitchen suddenly one day
- 2:57Speaker 1: called me like, okay, so I want to make a
- 3:00Speaker 1: band and I already got a bassist from my high
- 3:03Speaker 1: school student, I mean a high school friend. So she
- 3:07Speaker 1: was like, you want to join us and make songs
- 3:11Speaker 1: as a band together, and I was like, yeah, of course,
- 3:13Speaker 1: why not. So that's how his name was formed.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Right, So you just I haven't been together all that long,
- 3:21Speaker 3: but scene's on stage, like, you guys are really really tight,
- 3:25Speaker 3: Like did you just practice a lot?
- 3:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I think at least once or twice in
- 3:30Speaker 1: a week.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Well's there's a lot of the places in Japan, like
- 3:36Speaker 3: where we played is actually a rehearsal, like gatica is
- 3:40Speaker 3: a rehearsal.
- 3:41Speaker 2: That is that way?
- 3:42Speaker 3: Where is do you rehearsal like more playing live like
- 3:44Speaker 3: that or do you do it by yourself?
- 3:46Speaker 1: No? Like there are so many studios in Osaka, so
- 3:49Speaker 1: we go there and just you know, jamming together. No,
- 3:52Speaker 1: we want to basement.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I wish musically like you guys blend thrash melodic,
- 4:03Speaker 3: not all there's traditional heavy metal there, like there's a
- 4:06Speaker 3: bit of trivium in there. There's a bit of primises.
- 4:08Speaker 3: It's so much, so much going on there. But how
- 4:11Speaker 3: do you how do you get the balance between all
- 4:13Speaker 3: those genres right in the writing?
- 4:15Speaker 1: Right? Well, actually, I don't feel like we're doing anything
- 4:19Speaker 1: very particularly difficult. We usually just jump together and make
- 4:24Speaker 1: songs that we feel, Okay, this is cool, this is
- 4:27Speaker 1: going to be a banger. Until we feel that way,
- 4:31Speaker 1: we keep you know, jamming and practicing again and again
- 4:35Speaker 1: and again over and over. So I think this kind
- 4:39Speaker 1: of process makes our sound not so messy. But the
- 4:44Speaker 1: only there's the only thing that we are very careful
- 4:47Speaker 1: about is to make sure our music doesn't sound like
- 4:52Speaker 1: something we have heard before by other bands, Like we
- 4:56Speaker 1: don't do you know, just ordinarily breakdowns. Yeah, there's some
- 5:00Speaker 1: breakdowns in those songs, but we don't do just you know, yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 1: we don't do that.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Your timing changes and changing with your breakdowns, Like we're
- 5:13Speaker 3: sitting there watching you just kind of like how the
- 5:15Speaker 3: fun do they do?
- 5:17Speaker 1: Yeah? That makes our sound very unique.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Another thing, like all three of you guys have got
- 5:25Speaker 3: different playing styles, like you're hit the drums like a
- 5:28Speaker 3: beast like Keshen played and sings like God and then
- 5:32Speaker 3: Rady just slaps the bass like with odd chiming signatures
- 5:35Speaker 3: and tempo changes, like I say, and at times it
- 5:38Speaker 3: seems like you are all off in your own world,
- 5:40Speaker 3: but then you just come back together and and make
- 5:43Speaker 3: it happen. Like is that rehearsor is that all sort
- 5:46Speaker 3: of had libbing made up on stage?
- 5:48Speaker 1: Well? Probably I've lived on the stage, but actually I
- 5:52Speaker 1: have never thought about our playing style in that way,
- 5:56Speaker 1: like different work. Yeah. Like I mean, like I said,
- 6:01Speaker 1: we have been together, like we have been friends for
- 6:05Speaker 1: several years, so I feel like, you know, we are
- 6:09Speaker 1: very much connected in the heart. I guess, like kind
- 6:13Speaker 1: of I don't know, like teleogaphy or something like that.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I mean like when I'm you know, going slowing down
- 6:21Speaker 1: the temple with my drum gradually like they feel it,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I always like, okay, I'm gonna slow down the temple gradually,
- 6:33Speaker 1: and they were like okay, yeah, so that's how you go.
- 6:37Speaker 1: So I think I can say we are very good
- 6:41Speaker 1: at adul on the stage.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I can back that up.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Thanks, So we When I first saw you, guys, I
- 6:49Speaker 3: was there with a with an American touring band. So
- 6:52Speaker 3: do you often play with international touring bands there or
- 6:55Speaker 3: is it?
- 6:56Speaker 1: Yes, I think so, Like I think once in a
- 7:00Speaker 1: month we play with bands from other countries, Like there's
- 7:05Speaker 1: some venues in Osaka and the Kyoto that give us
- 7:08Speaker 1: give call us from. Like when bands from other countries
- 7:13Speaker 1: come mhm, they're like, okay, so summer we are wondering,
- 7:19Speaker 1: we're gonna have a this band from other countries. So
- 7:22Speaker 1: we are wondering if you want to play with us
- 7:25Speaker 1: together on this day, and we are like, yeah, of course,
- 7:27Speaker 1: why not. We are in It's very you know, fun
- 7:31Speaker 1: to play with bands from other countries because you know, connection,
- 7:38Speaker 1: We can make a connection just like you you know,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 3: From different playing styles from bands all around the world.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Like it it'll be like its be learning of them,
- 7:49Speaker 3: they'll be learning of you as well.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Cultural change.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's what I was gonna say, Like we
- 7:56Speaker 1: can have very good influence to each other. And so
- 8:01Speaker 1: far we have played bands from states USA, I mean,
- 8:06Speaker 1: and Australia of course, and Germany, Italy and the Singapore
- 8:12Speaker 1: and Chile I guess. Yeah. It's very fun really.
- 8:16Speaker 2: And then with the Midnight Devil is one of the
- 8:18Speaker 2: best ones he played with.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Yeah, of course.
- 8:23Speaker 3: This show, Yeah, yeah, the very first time I saw
- 8:27Speaker 3: him play, Like when they came to Australia, they played
- 8:29Speaker 3: for about ten people and they put on the same show.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And next time I played four hundred and it was
- 8:34Speaker 2: the same show. Like it's got it as a band.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Yeah, A great.
- 8:41Speaker 3: And another thing because I was, like I said, I've
- 8:43Speaker 3: been in Japan about six times now with different bands,
- 8:45Speaker 3: and I've seen a lot of a lot of bands,
- 8:47Speaker 3: Japanese bands playing but every time you go.
- 8:50Speaker 2: There, like every single band is just nailing it.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Like, so I got to have a really rich music
- 8:56Speaker 3: culture over there, because I honestly have not seen a
- 8:59Speaker 3: band there that I've got no and then they're averaged.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Everyone just seems to be on point really well.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yeah right, I think. Yeah, Like needless to say, like
- 9:11Speaker 1: Tokyo is one of the big and best city that
- 9:16Speaker 1: has richest music culture in Japan, and so is Alsa
- 9:20Speaker 1: like a where we mainly play it. And I'm not
- 9:23Speaker 1: really sure, but medicine is still kind of underground, but
- 9:29Speaker 1: we have still lots of opportunities to you know, play
- 9:33Speaker 1: with many amazing bands. So and Alsaka is one of
- 9:38Speaker 1: the biggest city in Japan, so many bands from other
- 9:42Speaker 1: countries or other cities in Japan coming so we can
- 9:46Speaker 1: have good you know, giving good influence to each other.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I think this can make music culture grows so much
- 9:56Speaker 1: in Japan.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Another another thing that you do well over in Japan.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Cho It's like when when you put a lineup together
- 10:03Speaker 3: for a show, like pretty much every band is different.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Like you're not putting four thrash metal bands on together.
- 10:09Speaker 3: You're not putting four power metal bands like you've got.
- 10:11Speaker 3: When we played with you guys, like there was guys
- 10:14Speaker 3: just they're hitting the gomb you know. But but it
- 10:17Speaker 3: was brilliant, Like it's in Australia. They don't do that
- 10:20Speaker 3: so much, so they try and have all the bands
- 10:22Speaker 3: sort of similar, like with a similar thread.
- 10:24Speaker 2: But Japan seems to just throw everything in the mix.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Which it's great.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Yeah, mixing together. Yeah, it's fun. It's very fine. I'm
- 10:34Speaker 1: very happy about it. You know, other elements from other genres.
- 10:39Speaker 1: This is very good.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Yeah, Musically like you've already released chew EPs in twelve months,
- 10:45Speaker 3: which is pretty good. But you've got and embers will
- 10:48Speaker 3: rise and Smell the Coffee, So tell us tell us
- 10:50Speaker 3: a bit about those. I just finished playing Smell the
- 10:52Speaker 3: Coffee in the car about half and it's fucking awesome.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Thank you, okay, so us for first EP and Ambers
- 11:03Speaker 1: Will Rise. The concept of this album, I mean the
- 11:07Speaker 1: mini album is do not forget your passion, like do
- 11:11Speaker 1: not let your flame go away, make it bigger. This
- 11:15Speaker 1: is the concept of the this mini album and some
- 11:19Speaker 1: songs of this album is all related to you know,
- 11:23Speaker 1: passion for something in your heart. And the musically this
- 11:27Speaker 1: album has authentic metal features. You can find you know,
- 11:31Speaker 1: melded and thrash metal phrases times yeah here and there,
- 11:36Speaker 1: and the lyrics are also very have to say like serious.
- 11:40Speaker 1: So as a metal head, it's very one of my
- 11:43Speaker 1: favorite mini album from Kids Navy. I mean, we only
- 11:47Speaker 1: have two though, and as for a second epis now
- 11:54Speaker 1: the Coffee. The concept of this album, the mini album,
- 11:57Speaker 1: I'm sorry I'm keep saying this album, Yeah, this mean
- 12:00Speaker 1: album is anger and depression. So every song in this
- 12:04Speaker 1: meaning album is about you know, anger, misery, sadness, depression,
- 12:08Speaker 1: those kind of human negative feelings. And in terms of
- 12:12Speaker 1: song we featured more of our individual musical say like characteristics.
- 12:19Speaker 1: For example, there's the Rainess groovy slab like which is
- 12:27Speaker 1: really banger and there is the ho say, like metalcore
- 12:31Speaker 1: riffs from Kitchen and as for me, I put some
- 12:36Speaker 1: more death and thrashmatter phrases like blast beats, which is
- 12:41Speaker 1: my favorite. And we created Smell the Coffee by our
- 12:46Speaker 1: roots and uh, i'd say like playing styles of each in.
- 12:52Speaker 2: The actual song Smell the Coffee too.
- 12:54Speaker 3: I like there's a lot of jazz influence in that
- 12:56Speaker 3: as well, Like where where does that come from?
- 13:04Speaker 2: Or did you get that question?
- 13:08Speaker 1: We want to We want to, yeah, but it's fine.
- 13:12Speaker 1: We want to do like something very special and unique
- 13:16Speaker 1: that other bands do not do, Like I think nobody
- 13:24Speaker 1: can come up this kind of idea, like after doing
- 13:30Speaker 1: heavy breakdowns and then suddenly Jill comes in, this is
- 13:34Speaker 1: very unique. So just we want to be like very
- 13:37Speaker 1: unique and uh yeah do that kind of thing. Are right?
- 13:42Speaker 3: Are you you're working your way up to a full
- 13:44Speaker 3: album eventually or are you just happy to keep putting
- 13:46Speaker 3: out many albums for now?
- 13:48Speaker 1: Oh, we're going to make a full album eventually, but
- 13:51Speaker 1: we have so many ideas already enough to make a
- 13:54Speaker 1: full album. But probably we're going to continue to EP
- 13:58Speaker 1: for next probably and when we make a full album,
- 14:03Speaker 1: it's gonna be a concept album. I guess I'm not
- 14:07Speaker 1: really sure about the concept though, but yeah, I think
- 14:10Speaker 1: it's gonna be next year. I guess.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Oh, you know, and me know is something that other
- 14:16Speaker 3: people don't know that hopefully will say it a bit
- 14:18Speaker 3: slainer than that might WHI should be great?
- 14:20Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Now, tour wise, you're gonna be leaving Kyoto and through
- 14:26Speaker 3: Tokyo in November.
- 14:28Speaker 2: So tell us about our shows.
- 14:30Speaker 1: So we're gonna go to Tokyo on twelfth and thirteenth November.
- 14:36Speaker 1: We will be playing in Tokyo with our friend band
- 14:39Speaker 1: called fire Flame, which is true heavy metal band from Japan.
- 14:44Speaker 1: This is not a tour for released album or anything,
- 14:47Speaker 1: but we feel like we should, you know, go to
- 14:50Speaker 1: Tokyo and play time to time because like I said,
- 14:53Speaker 1: Toyo has much richer music culture compared to you know,
- 14:57Speaker 1: hearing us like a. So yeah, we're going to go
- 15:00Speaker 1: there and slay in Tokyo anyway. Yeah, we are very
- 15:05Speaker 1: much excited about it.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Well, and then you're actually up to Taiwan, which is
- 15:10Speaker 3: going to be your first time out of Japan playing
- 15:12Speaker 3: music made.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Are you nervous about it?
- 15:15Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 15:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it was just a long way from home to
- 15:22Speaker 3: go for just one show, like it is it a
- 15:24Speaker 3: big festival.
- 15:25Speaker 2: You're going to for over there?
- 15:26Speaker 1: No? No, no, only a venue. Okay, there's a friend of
- 15:29Speaker 1: ours and who is running in the venue. So we're
- 15:35Speaker 1: going to go there and play some shows out there,
- 15:39Speaker 1: maybe two or three days in Taiwan. Yeah, I hope
- 15:43Speaker 1: we're going to be in the festival some day, very very.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Soon, hopefully.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Rather than what about Australia? Do you have plans on
- 15:49Speaker 3: coming to Australia all that? Of course, yeah, we'd love to.
- 15:52Speaker 3: I mean definitely we have to go.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Yeah, probably next year hopefully if we could afford it.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Ah, you know, so describe a typical live show for me.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Guys like I say, I've seen it and I know
- 16:07Speaker 3: how good it is. But those who might not be
- 16:10Speaker 3: familiar with the band, tell us about your live show.
- 16:13Speaker 1: I'm not really sure about our titical show, but I
- 16:17Speaker 1: would say it's madness, like chaos, like there's always you know,
- 16:22Speaker 1: circle bit and hardcore dancing and screaming from the crowd.
- 16:27Speaker 1: We are very happy to see those moves. But what
- 16:30Speaker 1: matters the most to us is that to make sure
- 16:34Speaker 1: everyone can have fun in their own way. You don't
- 16:38Speaker 1: have to be in a pit, or you don't have
- 16:40Speaker 1: to dance like crazy, or you don't have to scream.
- 16:43Speaker 1: We just want to make sure everything's fine in it.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Everyone can have a good time in our show. That's
- 16:51Speaker 1: what we want to do in the concert.
- 16:55Speaker 3: I just say, someone's listening this man and they're liking
- 16:58Speaker 3: what they hear, and like it was three of your
- 17:00Speaker 3: songs they can listen to get.
- 17:03Speaker 1: And yeah, of course. So the first one is taking
- 17:07Speaker 1: Back my Soul from our first mini album and Amber
- 17:12Speaker 1: Were Rise. We put so much passions energy into this song.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Like this song is about absolutely taking back yourself, thinking
- 17:22Speaker 1: about what was yours, like remember who you really wanted
- 17:27Speaker 1: to be or who you what you really want to do?
- 17:30Speaker 1: Like do not let anyone decide your direction. So this
- 17:35Speaker 1: is one of my favorite songs from Kids Navy to me,
- 17:42Speaker 1: Is everything fine?
- 17:43Speaker 3: Hey, I'm just just trying to there's a little bit
- 17:45Speaker 3: of noise background.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I'm just trying to get rid of that.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I think I've got it, okay, So I'm gonna found
- 17:51Speaker 1: in you. Secondly, I will say Smell the Coffee, the
- 17:55Speaker 1: title truck of second and mini album. Like musically there's
- 18:00Speaker 1: the song that has their unique approach. Oops. Sorry, like
- 18:07Speaker 1: you know, Like I said, there's the hardcore style breakdown
- 18:12Speaker 1: and blast pace, which is my favorite. And surprisingly you
- 18:16Speaker 1: can hear jazz at the end of the song. So
- 18:21Speaker 1: this is a very unique and interesting song. And I
- 18:24Speaker 1: wrote lyrics for this song based on my personal experience,
- 18:28Speaker 1: Like there's a time that you know, I did nothing,
- 18:31Speaker 1: Like literally, I did nothing. I was not in a band.
- 18:35Speaker 1: I broke up with my girlfriend. She dumped me. Anyway, well,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I broke up with my girlfriend and quit my job
- 18:45Speaker 1: and staying at home and drinking all day long every day.
- 18:49Speaker 1: So I was helpless. But one day I realized that
- 18:57Speaker 1: I cannot stay in this state of slow decay. I
- 19:01Speaker 1: feel like there must be someone who has been going
- 19:05Speaker 1: through this kind of pain or suffering or this kind
- 19:07Speaker 1: of shit. So I wrote my experience to you know,
- 19:12Speaker 1: let that people know that you're not alone. You're not
- 19:17Speaker 1: the only one who has been going through this kind
- 19:20Speaker 1: of pain. So yeah, personally this is very touchy. But yeah,
- 19:26Speaker 1: my favorite song of course, and the last one is
- 19:30Speaker 1: called Hamelin and we have this is the New West
- 19:35Speaker 1: song too for us, And we have just finished our
- 19:39Speaker 1: recordings and the mastering. A couple of days Ago, and
- 19:43Speaker 1: it's gonna be on Spotify and Apple Music and other
- 19:46Speaker 1: music platforms versus this is group matter based and that
- 19:53Speaker 1: there's a slight my drum solo so please check it out.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Who needs gets available
