- 0:08Welcome once again to another exciting episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday. My name as always Jason Riley
- 0:13and my copilot on this exciting journey, Barry T Nixon Two Shot
- 0:18Tuesday, the podcast you can and should listen to on your break.
- 0:22Barry, how are you doing today? I'm doing wonderful, Jay, and
- 0:25very well put. That's exactly what people
- 0:27should do. We're in and out in 17 to 19
- 0:31minutes. It's kind of perfect.
- 0:32It really is perfect. And we have a format on the
- 0:36show. We have topics that we cover
- 0:38interspersed among two shots of our favorite liquid of the
- 0:42moment. And why don't we get into shot
- 0:45#1 to kick off our format. What have you got?
- 0:49I have some more Bareface whiskey Canadian made from our
- 0:53new friends we met at Whiskey Global some time ago.
- 0:59Delicious Jay, I love it. What have you got?
- 1:02Fantastic Barry, I'm joining you on this adventure because I
- 1:05picked up a bottle myself at my local bareface, so we are
- 1:09cheering it up. We both really enjoyed this.
- 1:12Cheers to you. Oh, all the notes.
- 1:18Is there some Maple syrup in that?
- 1:19I get a Maple syrup note. Yeah, wow.
- 1:23I feel like, yes, that you were up here for a second.
- 1:26You were right. In my own way.
- 1:27It's it's incredible. Yeah.
- 1:29A little bit of a little bit of syrup, but now it's gone.
- 1:32But it was just now it's gone. Fleeting moment of syrup.
- 1:35Like pancakes? I had some pancakes with some
- 1:37wonderful Maple syrup, all in shot form.
- 1:41Barry, you did something really exciting this past weekend.
- 1:45Yeah. You know it.
- 1:47It's been a weekend of dates with my missus and it's been a
- 1:51lot of fun. She is a wonderful partner to go
- 1:53through time with. We always have a great
- 1:56adventure, no matter what it is we're doing.
- 1:58Today we went out near Uxbridge, which is Craig Zavitt's country,
- 2:03and we went, yeah, we went to CSA Farm and Corn Maze.
- 2:09Now you might say, OK, that's an interesting choice to go through
- 2:14a corn maze. You know, you, you're a grown
- 2:16ass man. Yes, that's very true.
- 2:18Yeah. But I'm also open to things.
- 2:21As you know, Jay, I like to say yes to things.
- 2:23So my wife, she came up with the idea and it was quite an
- 2:26adventure, beginning with the drive.
- 2:28Trying to get out of our fair city, as we know, can be a bit
- 2:31of a pain, but. Let's let's take our listeners
- 2:34through and viewers through all of this because I know that
- 2:37we're going to want to go through every minute with you.
- 2:39So it's Sunday when you do this and that you're getting out of
- 2:42the city. I want to hear about that.
- 2:45Was that a maze? Felt like a maze, Jay.
- 2:47There was some Rd. closures, as they often are in our fair town.
- 2:51So there was some diversion, some detours.
- 2:53But eventually we got to the four O 4 where things started to
- 2:56open up. And that's when I was able to
- 2:57let my car off the chain a little bit, as you know, I do
- 3:00like to do. And the next thing you know,
- 3:02we're in no man's land bridge. Yeah, like it was just farms
- 3:07and, you know, rows of corn for as far as the eye could see.
- 3:11It felt kind of otherworldly, if I may.
- 3:14You could have walked through anywhere and it would have been
- 3:16a corn maze at that point. You didn't have to go to the
- 3:18official 1. You could have just picked,
- 3:19pulled over to the side of the road, picked some rows of corn
- 3:22and stomped on through. But you didn't.
- 3:25You went to the official sanctioned.
- 3:27Corn. I went to the ticketed event.
- 3:29Yes, Jay. Yeah.
- 3:30This was something that Linda and I had to, we bought tickets
- 3:33for in advance and we actually have to pick a time slot as
- 3:37well, which is interesting. 12:30 it was only two options,
- 3:4112:30 or three in the afternoon. Three kind of blows your whole
- 3:44day, but 12/30 was where you know what we landed on.
- 3:47It was perfect and it was an absolutely gorgeous crisp, sunny
- 3:52day, which was perfect for wandering around, you know, a a
- 3:55cornfield. Now, I would have thought it
- 3:56would have been like a golf tee time, like every like maybe 10
- 4:00minutes somebody new enters the main, but it's not.
- 4:02Is it groups of people at 12:30 and then another group at one
- 4:06and a group at 2? How did that work?
- 4:07Well, this is what we learned. I feel like it's a bit of a
- 4:10sliding scale. There was no group.
- 4:13There was no discernible, you know, starting time.
- 4:16There was nobody like saying wait until, you know, the clock
- 4:20actually rolls over to 1230 before we turn you loose in the
- 4:23maze. It was a little more farm like
- 4:26in that way, which is a little more loose.
- 4:28Although, I guess farms, if they're well run, you're up at
- 4:30six, you're milking the cows, You know what I mean?
- 4:33You have a schedule. This was not that.
- 4:35This felt a little a lot more loose.
- 4:37And it was great. We just got there and we did
- 4:40what you and I like to do, Jay, often is breeze into a place.
- 4:44Yeah. Well, we do like that.
- 4:45But just breezing in, I like that.
- 4:48Yeah, I like that too. For Ken, less setting is kind of
- 4:51what you want. That's your VIP experience.
- 4:53So you're saying everybody at the corn maze got the VIP
- 4:55experience essentially breeze on through, so you wander into the
- 4:59maze. Was there other people going
- 5:01into the maze at the same time? Yes, there were.
- 5:04And it was kind of like there were some families there, but
- 5:06there were also people like Linda and I like who were just
- 5:09there on a date, you know? So it was kind of cool.
- 5:11You didn't necessarily have to have a kid with you.
- 5:13Yeah. So that was kind of great.
- 5:15How long does it take to get from beginning to the end of the
- 5:19maze? Well, let's see, we made a.
- 5:21There were a few, a handful of wrong turns.
- 5:26Really, it's a maze. It's a maze, right?
- 5:29But I, I kind of, you know, I, I thought, I thought I knew where
- 5:32I was going. And of course, eventually, you
- 5:34know, and then when I gave the brain back to Linda, we found
- 5:37our way out of the maze in like not very long after I had kind
- 5:41of backtracked this, there was a, there was a section where I
- 5:43was like, we've been down this corridor before.
- 5:46And it was kind of like, I had that feeling like you're kind of
- 5:49like literally just going in a circle.
- 5:51And so I was like, oh, shit. And then Linda's like, OK, let's
- 5:54try this way. So we did, we got back on track,
- 5:56but it was fun the whole time. Like you, it truly is just a
- 5:59walk. You know, you're not, there's no
- 6:01race. There's no like time to
- 6:03complete, but you do get a reward upon completion, no
- 6:06matter how long it takes. You get to select a pumpkin from
- 6:09the patch of your choice, which we didn't realize was built into
- 6:13the cost. Then there then as we were like
- 6:15checking in the guys like, well, if you want an extra pumpkin,
- 6:18it's only a dollar. I was like, wow, I mean, that's
- 6:21the deal. We didn't get the extra pumpkin,
- 6:22but we got like a small condo sized appropriate pumpkin that
- 6:28you know, had the the proper bottom 'cause you know, you, you
- 6:31need one that's that kind of sits straight.
- 6:33Yeah, of course that's. You have to, right?
- 6:35Otherwise, what are we doing here?
- 6:37Yeah, exactly. So you've got get your pumpkin.
- 6:40You got through the maze in a reasonable time.
- 6:43Reasonable. You're dressed obviously for it.
- 6:46You wore this outfit to the pumpkin or to the corn maze,
- 6:49right? I did, yeah.
- 6:50And I could have just blended right in with the corn and just
- 6:53scared the shit out of people as they were coming around corners.
- 6:56But I didn't. You know, I'm a little maybe a
- 6:59touch old for that, but. Terrifying man in the maze is.
- 7:03Yeah, exactly. Yeah, totally.
- 7:06Yeah. Kidnapper, whatever would be,
- 7:08would be a label slapped on me. So no, that that didn't happen.
- 7:11But what did happen is we finished the maze.
- 7:14We went into the store. Of course you got to.
- 7:16They had all kinds of stuff, you know, you would have loved it.
- 7:18They had brownies. They had a variety of different
- 7:20jams and syrups and things on offer.
- 7:23I did not. I did not.
- 7:25We had AI had a coffee and Linda had a hot apple cider that was
- 7:28that was kind of like our sit down, you know, 5 minute reward
- 7:32at the end of the completion of the maze.
- 7:34But they did have a bunch of meats and stuff.
- 7:36So I was kind of tempted by that.
- 7:37They had some steaks and stuff and I was like, is today the day
- 7:41for that? And I was like, wow.
- 7:42To buy home, maybe not bring home and cook.
- 7:45At home? Exactly.
- 7:46But then I remembered I have a factory delivery waiting for me
- 7:49at home, so I was like, well, the cooking.
- 7:50I got mine. You did today.
- 7:53I I'm back I I took like 3 or 4 weeks off and I was like I would
- 7:56love a factor delivery for this week.
- 7:58So I got mine today as well. Beautiful.
- 8:00And what do you share with our viewers?
- 8:03Some of the highlights of your package, Yeah. 3 white meats, 3
- 8:07red meats. So I got the always popular
- 8:10mozzarella burger, one of my favorites.
- 8:13I got. Two of the chicken, honey
- 8:15mustard chicken, one of my favorites as well.
- 8:17Those are great. I'm trying it another chicken.
- 8:19I forget what it is. It might be an apricot type
- 8:21chicken. Yeah, that's a good some kind of
- 8:24sauce. Yeah, I'm trying that.
- 8:26There's a steak where the steak is cut up into bits.
- 8:28So it's a steak, something that I'm trying.
- 8:31Steak bites. Steak bites.
- 8:33Yeah. And something else that's also
- 8:36in the red meat family. It's like a steak something.
- 8:39So I'm looking forward to my factor meals.
- 8:41So interesting. You've got yours coming today
- 8:43too, or have has already arrived maybe?
- 8:46Has already arrived, just need to be picked up, yeah.
- 8:49Yeah, great. So this is exciting the the
- 8:52maze. How would you rate the maze?
- 8:54Let's do it on a star rating like we do with movies.
- 8:57In terms of just difficulty to complete or just fun, enjoy
- 9:00being in there enjoyment, I'd say it's like a yeah.
- 9:04It was a 5 out of five. I enjoyed everything about it.
- 9:06It it was nice. The path wasn't, you know,
- 9:08muddy. Thankfully we've, you know, had
- 9:11some dryness in the air so there was no sliding around or making
- 9:15a mess of yourself. That's key.
- 9:17Yeah, because you never know with these farms, you know, you
- 9:19turn up and God, no, God knows what good, what condition
- 9:22they're in. You know what I mean?
- 9:24No one's checking. No.
- 9:27Anyway, that this one was well, well manicured and, and, and
- 9:31looked after. And there was some like kind of
- 9:33eerily, I, I guess they did this purposefully, but they left some
- 9:36corn unharvested and it was starting to rot.
- 9:39And so that kind of added to the sort of the eerie, you know, 10
- 9:43acre corn maze adventure. Yeah.
- 9:46That's what it was, 10 acres. It spread over 10 acres, but it
- 9:48was split up into a couple of different, like a more difficult
- 9:51version and then like a smaller version.
- 9:54What did you do? Well, I don't know.
- 9:55I think we kind of did all of it to like we, we didn't come out
- 9:59the same way we went in. So presumably we crossed over
- 10:03into the more difficult maze without even knowing it.
- 10:06That's the thing. Like there was no signage when I
- 10:08said it was loose, that's what I mean.
- 10:10It was. Got it.
- 10:11There was not. Yeah, Yeah, it was.
- 10:13They did have some hints, but the hints were indecipherable.
- 10:17That's just the Lyndon. I were just like, we just got
- 10:19to, we can kind of see where we need to be because it's not like
- 10:22the stocks were 15 feet high, right.
- 10:23So they were, you could, they were parts of the maze that were
- 10:26kind of elevated a little bit because it is like it's
- 10:28farmland. Yeah.
- 10:29It's all like perfectly flattened and, you know, doesn't
- 10:32feel like an NFL, you know, Astroturf or whatever it was.
- 10:38It was some lumps and whatever. So you can kind of see where
- 10:40you're going as you get up into the higher parts of the maze.
- 10:44Did they give you like sometimes a mazes?
- 10:46They give you those little sticks you can show if you're
- 10:48lost. They didn't do anything like
- 10:51that. No.
- 10:51So there might be people wandering that maze for months.
- 10:54You don't know I. Mean you didn't run.
- 10:56Into any people that would look like they were living in it.
- 10:59All like emaciated and hadn't eaten in a long time and.
- 11:02Just like really. Plus a corn.
- 11:03Yeah, Yeah, I guess not. If there was corn rotting, they
- 11:06obviously because they would have eaten it if they were maze
- 11:09dwellers. Yeah, totally.
- 11:10And if you're that desperate, yeah, Yeah.
- 11:13No, we didn't come across anything like that, thankfully,
- 11:15nor did we see, you know, any demonic children within the
- 11:19corn. It was perfectly good.
- 11:20I want to talk about that. I want to talk about that.
- 11:23Now that you've gotten through the maze adventure, this is
- 11:25going to lend itself to what I'd like to touch on maze related
- 11:28Maze didn't do. You want to get our second shot
- 11:31in the four? Yes, yes, there's a format.
- 11:33So I I will bring as our second shot more of the bare face
- 11:38goodness. We're on the same page once
- 11:41again, Jay Bareface. Yeah, yeah, Maple syrup.
- 11:47That's what I'm getting. Even if it's not there, I feel
- 11:49it. I do too.
- 11:51Now. I don't know whether that is you
- 11:52hypnotizing me or whether it is actually true.
- 11:55I'm going to look at it. I'm going to look at it and
- 11:57we'll see what we got. OK, Maze themed.
- 12:01When you told me you were going to the maze, which was just the
- 12:03day before, I immediately said is this going to be like The
- 12:06Shining? This is going to be like
- 12:07Children of the Corn. So I do want to touch on some
- 12:10maze themed movies, TV shows, events or anything we talk
- 12:14about. I think The Shining is a good
- 12:17one to touch on because it's a classic and I believe you've
- 12:20added that to your 4K collection.
- 12:21Is that true or untrue? I have yes.
- 12:23Recently I got the Warner Vault collection.
- 12:27How would you describe that? Have you watched it yet?
- 12:29I have it's. It looks incredible.
- 12:31It is slightly zoomed in. What?
- 12:34Yeah, Why did they do that? I don't know, But apparently
- 12:37this, that was, according to some things I've read online,
- 12:41that that was what Stanley Kubrick approved.
- 12:45However, he's long since been deceased, so I don't know who's
- 12:50approving. It may be in his name because as
- 12:52you may remember, like it was always known for really wide
- 12:55shots, like almost everything, even close-ups were wide.
- 12:58You can see, you know, But now it's, it's and now I, I don't
- 13:02want to give you the impression they get zoomed in the way you
- 13:04and I are zoomed in. It's not that.
- 13:06No, it's like no. It's not that it's ever so
- 13:10slightly zoomed in, but it is enough that you notice it.
- 13:13Are they trying to take away the letterbox?
- 13:16Is that what they're trying to do is go from a 16 by 9 to a
- 13:19what is it 4 by three or something?
- 13:20Well, four by three would be the square.
- 13:22Like what what you and I are looking at?
- 13:24What's the what's the little bit zoomed in where it's like TV
- 13:27size but not 16? BY9168 or something like that.
- 13:31Yeah. There you go.
- 13:31Or 8 I believe. Something I don't know,
- 13:33Letterbox. Anyway, 16 by 9?
- 13:35I think that sounds right. Anyway, it's just ever so
- 13:38slightly zoomed in. This is not a criticism.
- 13:40I didn't find it distracting at all.
- 13:41I thought it was actually better.
- 13:43You get to see like when Jack is having his interview at the
- 13:46Overlook Hotel, you can kind of see more of what's on the desk
- 13:49of the guy who who's doing the interview.
- 13:51On the desk. That's what I'm imagining on his
- 13:53hand writing in. Just his name plate.
- 13:56It's like, it's like front and center.
- 13:58Anyway, I thought it was great. It looked great.
- 14:01Now, of course, while I was in the maze, I couldn't help but do
- 14:04the Jack Nicholson limp. As I was going through the maze,
- 14:08I couldn't help it. And then just say, you know,
- 14:10Danny, you can't get away. I'm right behind you.
- 14:12I couldn't, I couldn't resist. Linda thought that was funny
- 14:14one. Of course, after four times,
- 14:17it's not one of those jokes you want to keep going back to.
- 14:19So no. Yeah, but I will say this as a
- 14:21reader of the book and as a watcher as well of the, I think
- 14:25it was the 90s miniseries on ABC.
- 14:28Right, with the guy from Wings. That's Jack Torrance.
- 14:31Yeah. Yeah, in the original novel
- 14:32there was no maze. Did you know that?
- 14:34Yeah, they were like animals, hedge.
- 14:36Animals hedge. Animals.
- 14:38Yeah. So they went back to that for.
- 14:40So the maze was brought in by Stanley Kubrick.
- 14:42And I got to say I mean as I'm a purist of reading Stephen King
- 14:46novels, but that maze works in the context of the movie that
- 14:50they made. Totally right.
- 14:51Stephen King currently hated the movie that we made.
- 14:54Yeah, yeah, yeah. So.
- 14:55Let's also jump to while we're talking about Stephen King and
- 14:58mazes and corn, we got to go to Children of the Corn, another
- 15:03Stephen King book. Yep.
- 15:06Was it Stephen King? Yeah, another Stephen King book
- 15:08made into a movie. You didn't see Isaac in the maze
- 15:11Malachi? Didn't see any of those guys.
- 15:14Didn't see Linda Hamilton, unfortunately.
- 15:15She was in that movie. Yeah, she was in it.
- 15:17I forgot. She's the star of the film and
- 15:19then this other guy who was like, I think he's popped up in
- 15:22a few other 80s things, but I can't think of his name,
- 15:25unfortunately. I used to watch that movie so
- 15:27many times. I had that recorded off of HBO.
- 15:30As a child, yeah. What was it that you liked so
- 15:33much about? It I just think I liked the
- 15:35movie. It was just sort of creepy and
- 15:37it was kids and I was a kid and it was kind of like, yeah, kids
- 15:41kind of taking over this town. I don't even remember all of it.
- 15:44Well, they murdered all the adults.
- 15:46So yeah, that'll happen. Yes, they did that.
- 15:49And then and then the corn and it was, it was just like as a
- 15:51kid being creepy. I don't think I'd be creeped out
- 15:53by it now so much. Have you seen it recently 'cause
- 15:57I watched it maybe inside of 10 years ago and it's it's OK.
- 16:00I have it on Blu-ray, but I this not one that I've thought yet to
- 16:04to upgrade to 4K, but there is a 4K version out there if you
- 16:07really we're so inclined, yeah. No, I haven't watched it.
- 16:11It also spawned all of these sequels that I know nothing
- 16:14about. Like have you?
- 16:15Either I've never watched them. No, I have not.
- 16:18Straight to video. Sequels, I believe.
- 16:20Yeah, I think you're right. I think one, the first one kind
- 16:23of hit all the notes. I'm not sure how much more you
- 16:25need, you know. Was I think was Isaac in all of
- 16:29the sequels. Or I think so.
- 16:31Yeah, I think so, yeah. I think him and although did
- 16:34Malachi get killed he was the redhead.
- 16:37Yeah, I feel like he did. I'm not sure if he did, but I
- 16:40feel like he might have. No.
- 16:41Well, you can circle back on that.
- 16:43Yeah, So anyway, that's Children of the Corn.
- 16:45But I really was impressed. I was.
- 16:47That movie really sucked me and I've never read the Stephen King
- 16:50story about it. That's unusual because you are
- 16:53definitely the reader of this show.
- 16:55Yeah. I'll get right on it.
- 16:57Let me get my reading glasses out and start checking it out.
- 17:00So those are two maze related things that I wanted to talk
- 17:03about. Anything relate to mazes or
- 17:06spectacles in any fashion on your side.
- 17:09Well, I, I don't know. There was a movie called The
- 17:11Maze Runner, which I never saw. It was kind of weird for younger
- 17:15people, but I don't think it really caught on, made the maze
- 17:18craze, didn't catch on, I think. No.
- 17:20You know, the most iconic would be the the maze from The
- 17:23Shining. I think that's the one that most
- 17:24people know. Yeah.
- 17:25But aside from that, I'd be labyrinth, of course.
- 17:29Course. Yeah, that's amazing.
- 17:31I added that in 4K. You did.
- 17:33And yeah. Great it was.
- 17:35Looks amazing. Jennifer Connelly's in it.
- 17:38Yeah, David Bowie. David Bowie, Fantastic.
- 17:42In the movie, the Jim Henson Muppets.
- 17:44Well, not Muppets, but Jim Henson's other types of puppets.
- 17:48Not The Muppets are in this movie.
- 17:50Puppets. Yeah, it's, it's, I mean, it's
- 17:53just a lot of fun. It's it is.
- 17:55Geared toward younger audiences. Tough to get through in one
- 17:58sitting. As you know, I'm challenged to
- 17:59get through anything in one sitting.
- 18:00That's true and so. For meals.
- 18:03I've seen that too. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:04Especially the factor meals because they're quite large.
- 18:07Yeah, totally. But I did enjoy of course.
- 18:09Labyrinth was fabulous. Really loved that movie.
- 18:12So good, worth the. 4K upgrade for me.
- 18:15Awesome. Yeah, so.
- 18:17I mean, that's our maze theme show, isn't it Barry?
- 18:19I think so. I think we've hit all the notes
- 18:21and I would recommend CSA Farms. If anyone does want to drive out
- 18:25to the Uxbridge area and check it out.
- 18:27It's kind of fun. It's a fun little date idea.
- 18:30And obviously kids, if you have kids, they probably enjoy it as
- 18:33well. Also good too.
- 18:35Yeah, I think we've given our viewers as many pro tips as we
- 18:39can today, Jay, and it is time for us to say goodbye.
