- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 25th of
- 0:17September and I'm so delighted to have your company as we today
- 0:22are going to look. I am such a nostalgic dude.
- 0:26Today we are going to hear for the last time Paul providing a
- 0:31full defence of his faith, sharing that story of what has
- 0:35happened to lead him to to have the belief that he has.
- 0:38And it is just a fantastic story that Paul is just so confident
- 0:43in sharing and shares it nuanced differently again and again to
- 0:47all these different audiences and uses it to great effect to
- 0:51to the point where the king today is shocked because it just
- 0:56speaks so directly to him that he assumes it must be in an
- 1:00effort to convert him to the way.
- 1:03Ah, fantastic. So let's hear what Paul has to
- 1:06say as he continues his defence of his faith all the way through
- 1:11to Rome, which will come as we wrap up acts next week.
- 1:15But for today, Paul and the gripper in Acts Chapter 26.
- 1:30Then Agrippa said to Paul, You may speak in your defence.
- 1:36So Paul gesturing with his hand started his defence.
- 1:40I am fortunate, King Agrippa, that you are the one hearing my
- 1:44defence today against all these accusations made by the Jewish
- 1:48leaders, for I know you are an expert on all Jewish customs and
- 1:53controversies. Now please listen to me
- 1:56patiently. As the Jewish leaders are well
- 2:00aware, I was given a thorough Jewish training from my earliest
- 2:04childhood among my own people and in Jerusalem.
- 2:08If they would admit it, they know that I have been a member
- 2:11of the Pharisees, the strictest sect of our religion.
- 2:15Now I am on trial because of my hope in the fulfilment of God's
- 2:19promise made to our ancestors. In fact, that is why the 12
- 2:24tribes of Israel zealously worship God night and day, and
- 2:28they share the same hope I have. Yet, Your Majesty, they accuse
- 2:33me for having this hope. Why does it seem incredible to
- 2:38any of you that God can raise the dead?
- 2:42I used to believe that I ought to do everything I could to
- 2:45oppose the very name of Jesus the Nazarene.
- 2:49Indeed, I did just that in Jerusalem, authorised by the
- 2:53leading priests, I caused many believers there to be sent to
- 2:56prison, and I cast my vote against them when they were
- 3:00condemned to death. Many times I had them punished
- 3:04in the synagogue to get them to curse Jesus.
- 3:07I was so violently opposed to them that I even chased them
- 3:11down in foreign cities. One day I was on such a mission
- 3:15to Damascus, armed with the authority and Commission of the
- 3:18leading priests. About noon, your Majesty, I was
- 3:22on the road. A light from heaven, brighter
- 3:27than the sun, shone down on me and my companions.
- 3:31We all fell down, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic.
- 3:35Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?
- 3:40It is useless for you to fight against my will.
- 3:44Who are you, Lord? I asked and the Lord replied, I
- 3:49am Jesus, the one you are persecuting.
- 3:52Now get to your feet, for I have appeared to you to anoint you as
- 3:57my servant and witness. Tell people that you have seen
- 4:01me and tell them what I will show you in the future, and I
- 4:05will rescue you from both your own people and the Gentiles.
- 4:10Yes, I'm sending you to the Gentiles to open their eyes so
- 4:14they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of
- 4:17Satan to God. Then they will receive
- 4:21forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God's
- 4:25people who are set apart by faith in me.
- 4:30And so, King Agrippa, I obeyed that vision from heaven.
- 4:34I preached first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and
- 4:38throughout all Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that all must
- 4:43repent of their sins and turn to God and prove they have changed
- 4:47by the good things they do. Some Jews arrested me in the
- 4:51temple for preaching this, and they tried to kill me, but God
- 4:55has protected me right up to this present time, so I can
- 5:00testify to everyone from the least to the greatest.
- 5:04I teach nothing except what the prophets and Moses said would
- 5:08happen, that the Messiah would suffer and be the first to rise
- 5:12from the dead and in this way announce God's light to Jews and
- 5:17Gentiles alike. Suddenly fester shouted Paul,
- 5:22are you insane? Too much study has made you
- 5:25crazy. But Paul replied, I am not
- 5:28insane. Most excellent, Festus, what I'm
- 5:32saying is the sober truth, and King Agrippa knows about these
- 5:36things. I speak boldly, for I'm sure
- 5:39these events are all familiar to him, for they were not done in a
- 5:43corner. King Agrippa, do you believe the
- 5:46prophets? I know you do, Agrippa
- 5:49interrupted him. Do you think you can persuade me
- 5:52to become a Christian so quickly?
- 5:55Paul replied. Whether quickly or not, I pray
- 5:58to God that both you and everyone here in this audience
- 6:02might become the same as I am, except for these chains.
- 6:07Then the king, the governor, Bernice, and all the others
- 6:10stood and left. As they went out, they talked it
- 6:15over and agreed this man hasn't done anything to deserve death
- 6:20or imprisonment. And Agrippa said to Festus he
- 6:24could have been set free if he hadn't appealed to Caesar.
- 6:39Our Lord, thank you for this story.
- 6:41Thank you, firstly for Paul's boldness in the way that he
- 6:44shares the way that you touched his life.
- 6:48And secondly, Lord, thank you for this insight, that here you
- 6:53have a clear goal to take your message to Roman, to the
- 6:58emperor. But those who are wisest in this
- 7:02audience, those who are in power, those who know the most
- 7:06and are most connected, they are blinded to your plan and to your
- 7:10truth. They have no idea.
- 7:12Our Lord, that is the way your Kingdom works.
- 7:14Your Kingdom works in these mysterious ways that are not
- 7:18obvious from the outside. And when we look at what's going
- 7:21on, it can often make no sense at all.
- 7:23And particularly when we are wisest, your message can sound
- 7:29the most foolish. Our Lord, make us fools for your
- 7:33message. Humble us, and may your message
- 7:39and your truth be on our tongues, even when it sounds
- 7:44like foolishness to the world around us.
- 7:47We want to be Your heralds, bringing Your truth to the
- 7:51world. We love you and we love your
- 7:56Kingdom and all that it brings for us and our world.
- 7:59And so we praise you, we love you, we thank you, We pray all
- 8:05of this in your precious name, Jesus, Amen.
