- 0:00Welcome to Reformed Thinking. It is absolutely fantastic to
- 0:03have you joining us today. Yeah, really glad you're here
- 0:06with. Us For this deep dive, our
- 0:08central mission is to carefully and methodically examine Jean
- 0:13Chrysostom homily on the 1st chapter of the Apostle Pauls
- 0:17Epistle to the Galatians. You're getting a front row seat
- 0:20to see how the early Church Fathers understood well the most
- 0:24critical concepts of our faith. Really heavy stuff, right?
- 0:27We're talking about the mechanics of grace, the proper
- 0:30role of the law, and the absolute sovereignty of God in
- 0:33salvation. It's.
- 0:34Going to be a fascinating discussion.
- 0:35OK, let's unpack this. We have to set the historical
- 0:38context first because, well, without the background, the
- 0:42intensity of Paul's letter might just catch you completely off
- 0:45guard. Oh, absolutely.
- 0:46It's aggressive. It is the apostle Paul is
- 0:49writing to a group of believers in the region of Galatia, and
- 0:52these individuals are they're rapidly slipping away from the
- 0:56gospel of Greece. They're being pulled right back
- 0:58into the heavy bondage of the Jewish ceremonial law.
- 1:01And Paul is not happy about it. He's writing this letter as an
- 1:04emergency intervention, basically to stop a theological
- 1:08catastrophe. What's fascinating here is the
- 1:11sheer magnitude of the theological stakes involved.
- 1:15When we look at this text through the lens of the
- 1:17Westminster Confession of Faith, it perfectly illustrates the
- 1:20absolute, irreconcilable clash between the Covenant of Works
- 1:24and the Covenant of Grace. Yeah, we should probably define
- 1:26those for anyone who might need a quick refresher.
- 1:29Good call. So the Covenant of works was the
- 1:31original arrangement with Adam in the Garden of Eden.
- 1:34Do this and live. Right, Disobey and die.
- 1:36It relies entirely on human performance.
- 1:38Which didn't go so well. Not at all.
- 1:41The covenant of grace, on the other hand, is God's promise to
- 1:44save Throners through the perfect life and sacrifice of
- 1:47Jesus Christ. Received by faith alone.
- 1:49Faith alone, but the Galatians were trying to drag the covenant
- 1:53of works right into the covenant of grace.
- 1:55It's like trying to mix oil and water.
- 1:57Exactly. The sources we're analyzing
- 2:00today show Paul vigorously defending his divine Commission
- 2:03against false teachers. These teachers who were actively
- 2:06trying to pull believers back under a system where, you know,
- 2:10human works were required to maintain God's favor.
- 2:13The battle lines are just completely drawn over how a
- 2:16person actually stands justified before a holy God.
- 2:19And you can feel that tension from the very first lines of the
- 2:22text. Chris Austin points out the
- 2:24vehement and the lofty spirit of Paul's opening remarks.
- 2:27He comes in hot. He really does.
- 2:29Usually when you read a letter from Paul, he starts with warm
- 2:32greetings. Giving thanks for the believers.
- 2:34Right offering a long prayer for their continued growth, but not
- 2:38here. No pleasantries.
- 2:39He skips them entirely, and Chrysostom provides this
- 2:42brilliant analogy to help us comprehend why Paul is being so
- 2:47abrasive right out of the gate. The doctor analogy, yes.
- 2:50He compares a good spiritual teacher to a skilled medical
- 2:54doctor because a doctor cannot always prescribe soothing
- 2:57ointments and gentle bandages. If a patient comes in with a
- 3:00life threatening infection. You can't just give them an
- 3:02aspirin. A doctor has to use a scalpel to
- 3:05cut out the dead tissue. Sometimes they have to use
- 3:08cautery to burn the wound closed and stop the bleeding.
- 3:11Other times, sure, mild remedies will do the trick.
- 3:14But not here. No.
- 3:15Paul is applying the scalpel and the cautery here because the
- 3:19Galatians are in critical spiritual condition.
- 3:22The infection of false teaching is spreading fast.
- 3:24And gentle persuasion would honestly be malpractice at this
- 3:28point. We see that same shifting tone
- 3:30in Christ's own earthly ministry.
- 3:32Actually, no, that's a great point.
- 3:34Yeah, when dealing with his disciples, Chrysostom brings up
- 3:37very specific examples from the Gospel narratives to prove this,
- 3:41and it perfectly validates Paul's approach.
- 3:43Like with Peter. Think about the Apostle Peter.
- 3:46In one breath, Christ praises him enthusiastically.
- 3:50Right after Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ.
- 3:53Jesus says, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona, for flesh and
- 3:56blood hath not revealed that unto thee.
- 3:58It's a massive moment of high praise.
- 4:00But then shortly after that when Peter tries to talk Jesus out of
- 4:04going to the cross. Effectively trying to bypass the
- 4:07atonement. Christ issues a shockingly harsh
- 4:09rebuke. Get thee behind me, Satan.
- 4:12Yeah. Severe language becomes an
- 4:14absolute necessity when dealing with the corruption of grace.
- 4:18When the core of the gospel is under direct attack, mild
- 4:22manners are just no longer the appropriate tool.
- 4:25Paul is following his master's playbook.
- 4:27He's escalating his rhetoric to match the severity of the
- 4:30threat. That brings the specific crisis
- 4:33in Galatia into shark focus. The threat was coming from a
- 4:36group of false teachers. Often referred to as Judaizers.
- 4:40Right. And according to Chrysostom's
- 4:42analysis, these teachers were entirely intoxicated with vain
- 4:46glory. They crave the dignity and the
- 4:48social status of being recognized as authoritative
- 4:51teachers. And they were demanding that the
- 4:53Galatian believers observe specific Jewish rituals.
- 4:57We're talking about mandatory circumcision.
- 4:59Keeping the Sabbath days. Observing the new moon
- 5:01festivals. They were essentially telling
- 5:03these new Gentile Christians that faith in Christ was a good
- 5:06start. But it simply wasn't enough.
- 5:07Right. To be truly right with God, you
- 5:10also had to conform to the ceremonial law of Moses.
- 5:13They were adding human requirements to the finished
- 5:16work of the Cross. The false teachers also deployed
- 5:19a very specific, highly deceptive argument to back up
- 5:22their demands. And to undermine Paul's
- 5:24credibility. Yeah, they claim that Peter,
- 5:26James and John. The original apostles down in
- 5:29Jerusalem. They claim those guys did not
- 5:31forbid these Jewish practices. They argued, look, the guys who
- 5:35actually walked with Jesus are still going to the temple and
- 5:38keeping the customs. So Paul is just a rogue agent
- 5:41making up his own rules. But Chrysostom defends the other
- 5:45apostles by explaining A crucial distinction here.
- 5:49This part is so insightful. It really is.
- 5:52The other apostles allowed those practices just as a concession
- 5:55to the weakness of the Jewish believers.
- 5:57Not as a positive binding doctrine.
- 5:59Exactly. They were condescending to the
- 6:01cultural background of the Jews. Allowing them time to transition
- 6:04out of the Old Covenant customs. They were absolutely not
- 6:07teaching that these practices justified anyone before God.
- 6:11But the false teachers took that sensitive pastoral concession.
- 6:14Weaponized it. Yes, weaponized it against Paul,
- 6:18telling the Galatians that Paul was contradicting the original
- 6:21disciples and preaching an inferior, watered down gospel.
- 6:24So how does Paul respond to this massive attack on his
- 6:28credentials? Well, he defends his authority
- 6:31by launching into a rigorous defense of the Trinity.
- 6:34Right in the opening lines. His opening claim is that his
- 6:36apostleship is not from men, neither through man.
- 6:40He's stating clearly and unequivocally that his
- 6:43Commission came directly from God.
- 6:44Skipping human mediation entirely, he didn't go to a
- 6:47seminary in Jerusalem. He didn't get a certificate of
- 6:49approval from Peter. He wasn't ordained by the
- 6:52Council of Men. His authority is divine.
- 6:54And the theological synthesis Chrysostom pulls from this
- 6:57opening greeting is just incredible to read.
- 7:00He anticipates the heretics, right?
- 7:02He anticipates how later heretics, particularly those who
- 7:05denied the full deity of Christ, tried to use the word through in
- 7:09Paul's phrasing. To argue that the son is
- 7:12inferior to the father. Because Paul writes through
- 7:16Jesus Christ. And these heretics claim that
- 7:18the word through implies A lesser agent.
- 7:21Like an assistant carrying out the orders of a superior boss.
- 7:25But Chris Austin refutes this completely.
- 7:27He shows that Paul immediately adds and God the Father to the
- 7:31exact same phrase. By applying the word through to
- 7:35both the father and the son simultaneously.
- 7:37Paul proves they share the exact same divine essence.
- 7:41Chris Austin even brings in the standard baptismal formula to
- 7:44cement his case. We're commanded to baptize in
- 7:47the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 7:50And he argues that the order of the names does not establish an
- 7:53order of rank or superiority. Just because the son is named
- 7:57second does not make him less than the father.
- 7:59It proves the absolute equality of the persons within the
- 8:02Godhead. And it validates that Paul's
- 8:04calling through Christ is a calling directly from the
- 8:08Almighty God. Chris Austin makes another
- 8:10brilliant observation about what Paul deliberately chooses to
- 8:13leave out of his opening remarks.
- 8:15The cosmic majesty part, yes. Why does Paul skip mention in
- 8:19Christ's Cosmic Majesty? If you read the opening of the
- 8:21Gospel of John, it starts with the sweeping declaration that
- 8:25the Word was God. Existing before time began.
- 8:28The Epistle to the Hebrews spends its opening verses
- 8:31talking about Christ being the exact imprint of God's nature.
- 8:35Upholding the universe by the word of His strength.
- 8:37But here in Galatians Paul skips all that pre existence theology.
- 8:42And goes straight to the resurrection, saying God raised
- 8:44him from the dead. It seems like a missed
- 8:46opportunity to establish Christ's authority.
- 8:49But Chris Austin points out the sheer genius of this omission.
- 8:52Paul does this because he is diagnosing the specific fear
- 8:57gripping the Galatians. They're terrified.
- 8:59They're terrified of abandoning the Law of Moses because they
- 9:02fear God's wrath. Right, if Paul had spent his
- 9:05opening paragraph talking about Christ creating the universe out
- 9:08of nothing. It would be entirely true.
- 9:10But it wouldn't address their immediate blinding panic about
- 9:13works, sin and justification. By highlighting the cross and
- 9:16the reservation duration right away, Paul points directly to
- 9:20the historical acts that completely exclude the need for
- 9:23the ceremonial law. The atonement is the central
- 9:25issue here. Christ dying and rising again
- 9:29proves that the penalty for sin has been paid in full.
- 9:31If the cross is sufficient to deal with the wrath of God
- 9:35against sin, then the law is entirely obsolete as a means of
- 9:38justification. Paul is giving them the specific
- 9:41theological medicine they need for their specific spiritual
- 9:45disease. Here's where it gets really
- 9:46interesting. In verse 4, Paul uses the phrase
- 9:50deliver us out of this present evil world.
- 9:53Oh, the ascetic heretics love this.
- 9:55One they did. Chrysostom notes that certain
- 9:57heretics seized on this exact phrase to claim that the
- 10:01physical world, physical matter itself, is inherently evil.
- 10:05Even the literal course of the sun and moon.
- 10:08Yeah, they tried to pit the spiritual realm against the
- 10:10physical creation. Arguing that the goal of the
- 10:13Christian life is to escape the wicked physical body.
- 10:16And the corrupted material universe.
- 10:18They read Evil World and thought it meant Evil Planet.
- 10:22But Chrysostom early dismantles that heretical view using
- 10:26airtight, undeniable logic. Walk us through that.
- 10:29If physical life itself is evil, he argues, then murderers would
- 10:32deserve a crown of honor for ending it.
- 10:34Wow, that's taking it to its logical conclusion.
- 10:37If the physical body is a wicked prison, then a killer is just a
- 10:41Liberator. And suicide shouldn't be
- 10:43punished at all, but praised for escaping the evil matter.
- 10:47But we know from the Scriptures that God strictly punishes
- 10:49murder. Therefore, the physical world
- 10:51and the biological life God created cannot be inherently
- 10:54evil. Instead, when Paul says evil
- 10:57world, he's referring to depraved moral principles.
- 11:01Sinful. Actions and the ungodly systems
- 11:03of thought that dominate the current age.
- 11:05Chris Austin lists daily realities, eating, sleeping,
- 11:09growing, the natural cycles of the sun and moon.
- 11:12He sees them as entirely natural and good works of God's original
- 11:16creation. True evil is not found in dirt,
- 11:18rocks, or human biology. True evil is a matter of the
- 11:21corrupt human will acting in deliberate rebellion against a
- 11:25holy God. The physical world is just the
- 11:27stage. The is where the evil actually
- 11:29resides, meaving. Into the actual body of his
- 11:31rebuke, Paul expresses absolute shock at the situation.
- 11:35He's stunned. He says.
- 11:36I marvel that you are so quickly removing from him that called
- 11:39you He's stunned. By the sheer speed of their
- 11:42desertion, Chrysostom. Highlights that falling away at
- 11:44the first onset of false teaching displays extreme
- 11:48cowardice he uses. This vivid military analogy
- 11:51comparing. The Galatians to a soldier who
- 11:54deserts his commanding general in the very middle of a minor
- 11:57skirmish, The false. Teachers didn't even need a long
- 12:00drawn out siege to deceive them. The Galatians.
- 12:03Threw down their weapons and surrendered almost immediately.
- 12:06They. Traded the freedom of grace for
- 12:08the chains of the law without even putting up a fight, Paul.
- 12:12Then diagnosis their surrender by saying they are turning to a
- 12:15different gospel but he. Quickly clarifies, which is not
- 12:19another gospel, this phrase. Requires very careful handling
- 12:22because. Chrysostom addresses how a group
- 12:25known as the Mamarsianites twisted this specific verse
- 12:28right for. Those who might not spend their
- 12:30weekends reading 2nd century church history.
- 12:33The Marcinites. Were a radical sect who
- 12:35essentially took scissors to the Bible they cut.
- 12:37Out the entire Old Testament and anything.
- 12:39In the New Testament, they felt was too Jewish, claiming.
- 12:42The God of the Old Testament was an evil deity they used.
- 12:45Paul's phrase here to claim there is only one valid gospel
- 12:49book, their. Heavily edited version of Luke
- 12:52Karestum. Refutes this nonsense by arguing
- 12:56that the four canonical gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are
- 12:59truly one gospel because. They agree perfectly in their
- 13:03core doctrine. The number.
- 13:04Of physical writers does not destroy the unity of the truth
- 13:08when. Paul says there is not another
- 13:10gospel. He means there is only one
- 13:12objective truth regarding salvation by grace alone.
- 13:15Any. Alternative system of salvation
- 13:18is not a different kind of gospel, it's a total.
- 13:20Fabrication. The Judaizers.
- 13:22Infiltrating Galatia might have argued that they weren't
- 13:25actually changing that much. They probably told.
- 13:27The Galatians, we still believe in Jesus, we still believe in
- 13:30the cross. We're just adding.
- 13:31One or two minor commandments like circumcision and a few holy
- 13:34days just to be safe. But Paul.
- 13:36Treats this seemingly minor edition as a total catastrophic
- 13:40subversion of the Gospel. Kurostom.
- 13:42Gives us fantastic, vivid examples from the text to
- 13:46illustrate why a slight alteration is so incredibly
- 13:49deadly. The Royal.
- 13:50Coin example, he says. That taking a knife and paring
- 13:53away a small piece of a royal coin ruins the validity of the
- 13:57whole coin. You cannot.
- 13:59Use a defaced coin in the marketplace.
- 14:01He also. Points to the Old Testament
- 14:03narratives to show God's 0 tolerance policy for altering
- 14:07his commands a man. Gathering sticks on the Sabbath
- 14:11brought a death sentence upon himself.
- 14:13Ouza. Simply reaching out and touching
- 14:15the Ark of the Covenant to keep it from falling resulted in his
- 14:18sudden death. The point?
- 14:20Is clear small deviations from God's prescribed way have
- 14:23massive fatal consequences if we connect this.
- 14:26To the bigger picture, Chrysostom's application to his
- 14:29own contemporaries in the 4th century is striking, and it
- 14:32hits. Very close to home for us today,
- 14:34he sternly. Rebukes Christians in his day
- 14:36for keeping Jewish fasts or adopted Gentile customs like
- 14:40looking. For omens practicing.
- 14:41Astrology and even. Writing superstitious
- 14:43incantations on the heads of newborn babies to ward off evil
- 14:46spirits, they thought they. Could blend cultural
- 14:49superstitions with their Christian faith, but.
- 14:51Adding anything to Christ's grace, whether it is the Jewish
- 14:55ceremonial law, Pagan ideas of fate, or modern self help,
- 14:59moralism nullifies the gospel entirely from a.
- 15:02Reformed perspective justification is by faith alone
- 15:06in Christ alone, if you. Attempt to add your own works,
- 15:09your own cultural superstitions, or your own religious traditions
- 15:13to the finished work of Christ on the cross.
- 15:15You have completely destroyed grace.
- 15:17You're. Essentially telling God that his
- 15:20son's sacrifice was insufficient and that you.
- 15:22Need to chip in your own effort to close the gap that.
- 15:25Uncompromising stance on the purity of the gospel leads right
- 15:28into what commentators call the great anathema in Galatians 1.8
- 15:32to 9, Paul writes. Something terrifying, He calls.
- 15:34Down a curse an. Anathema, a sentence of eternal
- 15:37destruction, even on an Angel from heaven or on himself.
- 15:40If they dare to preach a contrary gospel, he leaves.
- 15:43Zero room for negotiation. There is no.
- 15:45Dialogue, no middle ground and no compromise, including.
- 15:48Himself and celestial beings in this terrifying curse, Paul
- 15:51demonstrates a massive theological principle that still
- 15:54governs the church today the. Objective truth of God's written
- 15:58revelation ranks infinitely higher than any personal dignity
- 16:02any. Miraculous experience or any?
- 16:04Ecclesiastical office, it doesn't matter.
- 16:06How high-ranking the messenger is if a glowing.
- 16:08Angel descends from the sky tomorrow with a message that
- 16:12contradicts the Bible. That Angel is cursed.
- 16:15Chrysostom. Points out the specific reason
- 16:18Paul adds the phrase from heaven, right?
- 16:20Because in the Old Testament context, earthly priests and
- 16:24prophets were sometimes called angels, which.
- 16:26Simply translates to messengers. Paul.
- 16:28Specifically says angels from heaven to cover all possible
- 16:32bases, ensuring. Absolutely no one, whether
- 16:35earthly priest or heavenly seraphim, has the authority to
- 16:38alter the message of salvation by grace the truth.
- 16:41Judges the messenger. The messenger does not determine
- 16:44the truth. Paul then turns.
- 16:45The spotlight onto himself and asks the listener to consider
- 16:49his own motives for am I now? Persuading men or God he's
- 16:53challenging. The false teachers accusation
- 16:55that he's a crowd pleaser who watered down the gospel to make
- 16:58it easier for Gentiles to accept, Paul argues.
- 17:00That if he simply wanted to please men, he would still be a
- 17:03comfortable, highly honored, wealthy Pharisee in Jerusalem.
- 17:06He wouldn't be. Suffering beatings, stonings and
- 17:09constant harassment. Paul's.
- 17:11Radical shift in lifestyle is the ultimate proof of his
- 17:14absolute sincerity. He voluntarily.
- 17:17Traded his country, his friends, his elite reputation, and his
- 17:21physical safety for a life. Characterized by persecution,
- 17:24strife, and daily impending death?
- 17:26No. Sane person makes that kind of
- 17:29massive sacrifice simply to please human beings or to gain a
- 17:32small following of outcasts. This proves his conversion is
- 17:36entirely genuine and his motives are laser focused on facing
- 17:40God's final judgment with a clear conscience.
- 17:43This completely. Aligns with the Reformed view of
- 17:45human nature and salvation A totally.
- 17:47Depraved heart, dead in sin and fiercely opposed to the truth,
- 17:51cannot just decide one day to change its own desires and
- 17:54suffer. For a cause it previously hated
- 17:56it. Requires God's overwhelming
- 17:57grace to miraculously intervene, shatter that hard heart, grant
- 18:02the gift of faith, and redirect those affections entirely toward
- 18:04God's glory. Paul's.
- 18:06Suffering is the evidence of God's sovereign work in his soul
- 18:09that. Reality brings us directly to
- 18:11Paul's testimony about his dark past he describes.
- 18:14Himself as the Pharisee of Pharisees saying.
- 18:16Beyond pleasure, I persecuted the Church of God.
- 18:19He wants them. To know he wasn't a casual
- 18:21observer, he was the. Chief antagonist.
- 18:23Chrysostom makes a point to clarify that Paul's persecution
- 18:26wasn't born of petty vanity, personal greed or a desire for
- 18:30political power. It came.
- 18:31From a fierce, though terribly misdirected zeal for the
- 18:35traditions of his father's, he genuinely.
- 18:37Thought he was doing the right thing by eradicating A
- 18:39blasphemous cult his. Conscience was captive to the
- 18:42law, and that made him a ruthless killer.
- 18:44This raises. An important question regarding
- 18:46human merit and God's election why would.
- 18:49A holy God choose someone violently attacking his own
- 18:52bride, the Church in. Galatians 1.15 Paul gives the
- 18:56answer. He says it pleased God, who
- 18:58separated him from his mother's womb, to call him by his grace.
- 19:02Paul credits his calling entirely to God's good pleasure.
- 19:06He doesn't. Claim he earned it through his
- 19:07zeal. He doesn't.
- 19:08Claim that God looked down the corridors of time and saw some
- 19:11future good in him or. Foresaw that he would eventually
- 19:14make a great apostle. He was.
- 19:16Chosen before he had done anything good or bad, going all
- 19:20the way back to his mother's womb.
- 19:22We see clear Reformed theological alignment right
- 19:26here, specifically the doctrine of unconditional election God.
- 19:30Calls individuals based entirely on His secret Providence and
- 19:33sovereign grace, not. Based on any human worthiness,
- 19:37foreseen faith, or moral superiority, Paul.
- 19:40Was the worst of sinners, and God saved him to display the
- 19:43absolute freedom of his grace when Paul.
- 19:45Describes the actual moment of his conversion.
- 19:48He uses a very specific and revealing phrase, he says.
- 19:51God chose to reveal his son in me, Chris Austin.
- 19:55Zeroes in on that tiny preposition in.
- 19:57It wasn't just. An external instruction.
- 19:59It wasn't just Paul. Reading a new scroll, hearing a
- 20:01persuasive lecture, or even just seeing the blinding light on the
- 20:04road to Damascus. The external.
- 20:06Light blinded his physical eyes, but the internal enlightenment
- 20:10of the soul by the Holy Spirit is what actually saved him God.
- 20:14Worked inside his heart to reveal the truth of who Jesus is
- 20:18and Paul. 'S immediate reaction to this
- 20:20internal revelation is incredibly telling.
- 20:22He says he. Didn't consult flesh and blood,
- 20:24meaning he. Didn't rush off to Jerusalem to
- 20:27get the other apostles to verify his experience.
- 20:29Divine. Instruction requires no human
- 20:32verification. When God speaks to the soul
- 20:35through the Word and the Spirit, you don't need a committee to
- 20:38approve it. You don't need a.
- 20:39Denominational stamp of approval to know that grace is real
- 20:42instead of. Seeking validation, Paul went
- 20:45straight to Arabia Chrysostom. Expresses immense admiration for
- 20:49Paul's fervent soul here. Think about.
- 20:51The psychological weight of this decision rather.
- 20:54Than seeking comfortable human validation in a familiar city
- 20:57where he could have been celebrated as a high profile
- 21:00convert, Paul chooses. A life of intense labor and
- 21:02isolation, heading straight. Out into the desert to preach to
- 21:06wild Barbarians, he. Demonstrates that his authority
- 21:08comes from heaven and he needs no earthly permission to start
- 21:12doing the work God called him to do.
- 21:14It isn't. Until 3 full years later that
- 21:17Paul finally travels to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, who
- 21:21we know. As the Apostle Peter and
- 21:23Chrysostom. Make sure we understand the
- 21:24exact nature of this trip Paul did.
- 21:26Not go to Jerusalem to sit at Peter's feet and be taught the
- 21:29basics of the faith he had. Already been preaching the
- 21:32gospel for three years? So what?
- 21:34Does this all mean for the relationship between the early
- 21:37apostles? It tells us.
- 21:38Everything about equality and mutual respect in the Kingdom of
- 21:42God. Paul.
- 21:43Possessing equal dignity and holding authority directly from
- 21:46Christ visits Peter out of sheer respect and friendship he stays
- 21:50with. Him for 15 days, likely sharing
- 21:53stories of what God was doing among the Gentiles and.
- 21:56Comparing notes on the grace they had both experienced, he
- 21:59also mentioned. Seeing James during this trip
- 22:00and he. Specifically honors James with
- 22:02the title The Lord's Brother Chrysostom.
- 22:05Argues this detail proves Paul harbored no envy or resentment
- 22:09toward the original apostles he freely.
- 22:11Gives them their honorable titles and respects their
- 22:13history with Jesus while. Fiercely maintaining the
- 22:16independence of his own God-given mission, He is.
- 22:19Not submissive to them, but he is in joyful harmony with them
- 22:23after that. Brief 15 day visit.
- 22:25Paul makes a highly strategic geographical choice.
- 22:29He leaves. Jerusalem and goes to preach in
- 22:31the regions of Syria and Silesia.
- 22:34Purposely remaining unknown by face to the churches in Judea,
- 22:38he's. Actively avoiding building on
- 22:40another man's foundation and he's.
- 22:42Ensuring that no one can ever accuse him of just copying the
- 22:45Judean Church's homework. He is.
- 22:47Forging his own path among the gentiles, the.
- 22:50Reaction of those Judean churches to Paul's distant
- 22:53ministry is incredibly beautiful.
- 22:55They didn't know. What he looked like.
- 22:56But they had the rumors they heard.
- 22:58That the man who used to violently persecute them?
- 23:01The man who held the coats while Stephen was stoned was now
- 23:04passionately preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.
- 23:07And Paul? Records their reaction.
- 23:09They glorified God in me, concluding.
- 23:12His sweeping analysis of this first chapter, Chrysostom points
- 23:16out Paul's intense, genuine modesty.
- 23:18Paul. Deflects all the admiration and
- 23:20amazement away from his own achievements.
- 23:23He doesn't. Say they praise my incredible
- 23:25turn around or they admired my dedication he.
- 23:27Ensures that God alone receives the full glory for turning the
- 23:31chief persecutor into the chief preacher of grace.
- 23:34It is a. Stunning, breathtaking picture
- 23:37of Soli Dale. Gloria, Glory to.
- 23:39God alone, God took. His greatest enemy and made him
- 23:42his greatest ambassador, ensuring that human boasting is
- 23:45completely excluded. To sum.
- 23:47Up what we've sterilely covered today for you, the listener.
- 23:51We have seen Paul's fierce, uncompromising defense of pure
- 23:55grace against the legalistic demands of the law.
- 23:58We have. Looked at the absolute supreme
- 24:00authority of divine revelation over any human and tradition,
- 24:04even an Angel from heaven, and we have.
- 24:06Examined the radical sovereign grace that reaches down into the
- 24:09muck of human rebellion, shatters a hard heart, and turns
- 24:13enemies into apostles. This.
- 24:15Ancient text requires us to evaluate our own understanding
- 24:18of grace in our daily lives right now.
- 24:20Are you trying? To add your own modern
- 24:21equivalent of circumcision or new moons to the gospel, are
- 24:25you? Secretly relying on your own
- 24:26good works, your own consistent religious performance, your
- 24:29church attendance, or your own cultural superstitions to add to
- 24:33the finished work of Christ, do you think?
- 24:35God loves you more on the days you read your Bible and less on
- 24:37the days you fail. If so, you are slipping back
- 24:41into the Galatian error grace. Plus your effort equals a dead
- 24:45works religion grace plus. Absolutely anything equals
- 24:48nothing, Christ. Is entirely sufficient or he is
- 24:52not sufficient at all? I want to.
- 24:54Leave you with a final thought to Mull over as you go about the
- 24:58rest of your week if the apostle.
- 24:59Paul, a man directly commissioned by the risen
- 25:02Christ, was willing to pronounce an eternal curse on himself
- 25:06should he ever deviate from the pure gospel of grace.
- 25:10How meticulously. Should we examine the media, the
- 25:12favorite authors, the popular teachers, and the personal
- 25:15traditions we allow to shape our own faith today?
- 25:18Are we holding? Them to the standard of pure
- 25:20grace or are we letting a little bit of the law sneak back in?
