- 0:03I have to confess that there was a unique struggle in preparing
- 0:11this message, not for the reasons that you might think.
- 0:15The challenge of studying and meditating on this particular
- 0:21portion of Scripture was solely due to the overwhelming glory
- 0:28that this passage presents. I felt as though whenever I
- 0:33reached a ceiling of understanding, that ceiling was
- 0:38removed and there were greater heights, greater levels of
- 0:43Revelation awaiting to be climbed.
- 0:48And when those levels were reached, there were even more
- 0:54levels to discover. There, I felt as though when
- 1:01this chapter was opened, a Volt was opened and a wave of gold,
- 1:07silver, and precious stones just spilled out.
- 1:12And particularly last night, standing there before this text
- 1:17looking around me, I thought to myself, what am I to do with all
- 1:20of this? Where am I to go with all of
- 1:24this? This scripture rightfully
- 1:32demands many parts, and we're not going to do that because
- 1:39I've been comforted by the realization that this particular
- 1:43moment is shared in Matthew, shared in Luke.
- 1:48And if the Lord Terry's, and we do at some point as a church,
- 1:52arrive to another gospel account down the road, then when we do
- 1:55come to this particular miraculous occurrence, we will
- 1:58have much to work with. There will still be much
- 2:04available at this banquet, and so we will attempt to come
- 2:12together and bring these things in a manner that we can
- 2:15understand while also honoring the absolute majesty of this
- 2:21portrait of Christ. And we will do so by organizing
- 2:25our thoughts in the following way.
- 2:27We will look first at the timing, the timing of this
- 2:31miracle. We will also look at the
- 2:34companions of this miracle. And lastly, we will look at the
- 2:39response to this miracle and as simple as that format might be.
- 2:47The way we are going to most benefit from this is if we have
- 2:50Mark open before us with Luke and with Matthew at the same
- 2:55time, so that we can do somewhat of a comparative analysis and we
- 3:00can take these different threads and see a more complete picture
- 3:05of what is happening here on this holy mountain.
- 3:10And with that, may I encourage you from the beginning to give
- 3:15yourself over to these next few moments without distraction,
- 3:20Because this is a very meaty passage and it requires our
- 3:26efforts to chew if we are going to digest and benefit from the
- 3:31glorious flavors and nourishment that comes from what the Holy
- 3:34Spirit has inscribed here. What I am speaking to you of
- 3:38today is the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ.
- 3:44It was an event of glory, but upon meditation and thinking
- 3:51about because the sound team and the media team often asks in
- 3:55advance what is the the message of the what is the the title of
- 4:01the message today? And you would probably say the
- 4:05glory of the Transfiguration. But there's too many glories,
- 4:10the glories of the Transfiguration.
- 4:13So many glorious things happen in this one moment, and I want
- 4:17you to see it with me. I want you to travel with me in
- 4:22these passages, and I want your heart to come alive again as you
- 4:28see just how amazing God is and just how supernatural that Bible
- 4:34you have in your hands really is.
- 4:37Let's go to mark Chapter 9 and let's begin together in verse
- 4:40one. May the Lord Jesus help us and
- 4:43empower us by His Holy Spirit to understand all that He has
- 4:46desire to speak, and may He receive maximum glory and praise
- 4:49and recognition for this authorship.
- 4:52And the wisdom and the beauty of his voice in Mark Chapter 9,
- 4:57verse one we read and he said to them, truly, I say to you, there
- 5:03are some standing here who will not taste death.
- 5:07Until they see the Kingdom of God after it has come with
- 5:09power. And after six days Jesus took
- 5:13with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high
- 5:16mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before
- 5:20them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no
- 5:25one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them
- 5:29Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
- 5:36And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here, Let
- 5:41us make 3/10 one for you and one for Moses, and 1:00 for Elijah.
- 5:46For he did not know what to say. For they were terrified, and a
- 5:50cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud.
- 5:56This is my beloved son. Listen to him.
- 6:03And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with
- 6:09them but Jesus only, Jesus only. May we see Jesus only.
- 6:17Today, the timing of this miracle, this chapter opens up
- 6:23with an interesting promise that Jesus makes, one that I believe
- 6:28has been misunderstood and misapplied even in some people's
- 6:31eschatology. Jesus looks at his own after
- 6:35telling them about his suffering, and they're suffering
- 6:37for following them, for following him.
- 6:39And he proclaims that among them standing there, they would not
- 6:45taste death. There would be a select few who
- 6:47would not taste death until something occurs, until they
- 6:51witness a particular event, and that is the Kingdom of God,
- 6:56coming with power, coming with power.
- 7:02Now that has led some to wonder if Jesus says that some of his
- 7:06own disciples would not die until the Kingdom would come
- 7:09with power, then has the Kingdom of God come in that Messianic
- 7:15glory already? Some would say yes, some would
- 7:19say based on this, surely then very early on Jesus Kingdom has
- 7:25been made fully manifest, because how could it be?
- 7:30His disciples surely are dead. Are we actually still waiting
- 7:35for the Kingdom to come with power?
- 7:36And if we are, then Jesus broke his promise, they would claim.
- 7:41And if not, if the Kingdom has not really come with power, then
- 7:44what other options are you really left with then?
- 7:46Are some of the disciples still alive in 2023?
- 7:50Surely not. These attempts to try to make
- 7:54sense of this is really something we don't have to
- 7:58entertain. When we do one thing, just honor
- 8:01the context. Look at the context.
- 8:04Context is king. Context keeps you safe.
- 8:08Context brings you to the true answer, at least the closest
- 8:11answer to the truth. Let's look at Jesus saying this
- 8:15here and compare it where else. He said he said it in two other
- 8:18places. One place in Luke and one place
- 8:20in Matthew. I told you in advance to have
- 8:21those books ready so that we can have a more complete picture.
- 8:25Let's turn quickly to Matthew 1628.
- 8:30To the left of Mark, Matthew 1628.
- 8:41Jesus says in Matthew 1628. Truly, I say to you, there are
- 8:46some standing here who will not taste death until they see the
- 8:49Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.
- 8:53Now turn to the right to Luke in Chapter 9.
- 8:59You look at Luke 9. Look with me quickly at verse 27
- 9:02and what do we see here in this passage?
- 9:05But I tell you, truly there are some standing here who will not
- 9:09taste death until they see the Kingdom of God.
- 9:13Now, if you have all those passages open, what do all of
- 9:17these declarations in these respective accounts have in
- 9:20common? All you have to do is look
- 9:23immediately after Jesus makes that statement, and they all
- 9:26have this one thing in common. Each time Jesus made this
- 9:31promise, it was immediately preceded before him, taking up
- 9:37some of his disciples up on the mouth of Transfiguration.
- 9:40Right after Jesus said it in Mark, right after Jesus said it
- 9:43in Luke, right after Jesus said it in Matthew, immediately after
- 9:47we have the event of the transfiguration.
- 9:51Meaning what? The Transfiguration is the very
- 9:54fulfillment of this promise. The pledge that Jesus makes to
- 9:59his own was realized on this mountain.
- 10:04In what sense? Well, Christ here on this
- 10:07mountain is going to unveil something of his glory.
- 10:12And by doing so, He is giving the disciples A revelation, A
- 10:16glimpse, a peak, a sample, if you will, of what form He will
- 10:21take, of what demonstration He will have when He does come in
- 10:26his Kingdom with power. In other words, what's happening
- 10:30here on the Transfiguration was very much a manifestation of the
- 10:34king and his glory, but it was a foreshadowing.
- 10:38It was something that was real and true, but it was just a
- 10:45glimpse, not the complete fulfillment of it.
- 10:51And So what the disciples are actually experiencing here at
- 10:53this time? Is in fact the appearance of
- 10:57Christ in his glory a demonstration of his power, but
- 11:02not the complete understanding and experience that awaits?
- 11:09Why did Jesus choose to do this now?
- 11:13Why at this point? And again, we have to look at
- 11:16what he just finished saying. He told these disciples, who are
- 11:20eagerly anticipating the Messiah to come in His splendor and
- 11:24majesty, that he was going to suffer and die instead, and on
- 11:29top of that. He looks at his closest
- 11:32followers and he says you also must suffer.
- 11:34You also each have a cross with your name on it.
- 11:39Talk about blowing a bubble. Talk about being deflated.
- 11:44Talk about being even tempted. To be discouraged.
- 11:48You have this high anticipation, this high expectation that this
- 11:51is the Messiah. We've seen his miracles, we've
- 11:53seen his power. He's going to make his Kingdom
- 11:55appear at any moment, and instead he hears, they hear,
- 11:59namely, Peter as the leader as well.
- 12:02I'm going to die, I'm going to suffer, I'm going to resurrect.
- 12:04But you also, you're going to know some suffering for
- 12:06following me. And then he makes this
- 12:10statement. But some of you here, you're
- 12:14going to see my Kingdom come with power.
- 12:17I'm going to show you something. And the reason why he wants to
- 12:19show them this, the reason why he's going to peel back the veil
- 12:21and he's going to he's going to expose something of yet of yet
- 12:25to come is because he wants to build them up.
- 12:29He wants to encourage him. He wants to bring some level of
- 12:32relief to them after hearing of the fate of the Messiah and
- 12:36their fate as well. In other words, by Jesus now
- 12:41coming and transfiguring before them, he's communicating
- 12:44something in the immediate sense.
- 12:46He wants the disciples to know. My death is not where it ends.
- 12:52God's purpose and program does not end with death.
- 12:58There is a glory to come. There is power to be realized.
- 13:03There is a government that will indeed be introduced.
- 13:09That will indeed be put into motion, and will never ever know
- 13:12and end. And disciples, in order to build
- 13:16your faith with that, in order for you to see the full and
- 13:19complete picture of what this is all about, come with me.
- 13:24Let me show you something of my glory.
- 13:26Let me show you something of what is to come.
- 13:29In other words, Jesus wants to come for them that their
- 13:32expectation of this awesome Kingdom is not wrong.
- 13:38It's just not yet. And so this is what the
- 13:42disciples are going to realize. And they also would be
- 13:45encouraged as they prepare to suffer themselves and understand
- 13:48if we are to be martyred, if we are to be hated, if we are to be
- 13:51persecuted. We are not giving our lives to
- 13:53something that will not end up being glorious, that will not
- 13:59end up being majestic and beautiful and dazzling.
- 14:04We saw, we saw him on that mountain.
- 14:06We saw what is to come, and they were able to be strengthened for
- 14:10the suffering that is to come. May I remind you, in your
- 14:12suffering, may I encourage you in your walk with Christ, with
- 14:16whatever persecution you are enduring, whatever persecution
- 14:19America will face in the coming years, that one way to
- 14:24alleviate, one way to strengthen your soul is to contemplate much
- 14:27on the glory of Jesus Christ. Keep your eyes on the last
- 14:32chapter of the story. Remember what is to come.
- 14:36Remember that this is not it. As much as we rejoice in the
- 14:41finished work of Jesus Christ, his redemptive plan is not yet
- 14:44finished. There is still something to
- 14:47come. There's still fulfillment to be
- 14:49realized. Focus on that.
- 14:52Set your mind on things above and see what strength will come
- 14:56to you. See what kind of what kind of
- 14:58relief you will realize as the disciples were to realize and
- 15:04this very moment. And that's why Peter says later
- 15:07on in his One Epistle and First Peter one or Second Peter 116
- 15:11rather. That we were eyewitnesses of His
- 15:14What? Majesty.
- 15:17We were eyewitnesses of His Majesty.
- 15:19We saw His royalty. We.
- 15:22Saw his authority, we saw. The magnificence of who he is.
- 15:27We saw it, we beheld it, and he testifies it of it later to the
- 15:31Christians, who also need to be encouraged by.
- 15:34So how is the Lord going to now infuse this grace into them?
- 15:37He takes his closest three Peter, James, John, and he goes
- 15:42up to a high mountain until they are very isolated.
- 15:45He stands before them, and we're told here in verse two that he
- 15:50transfigured before them, transfigured before them.
- 15:55The original word for transfer is where we get the word
- 15:57metamorphosis. It's talking about a powerful,
- 16:03all-encompassing kind of alteration, the same kind of
- 16:06experience that a Caterpillar knows when it becomes a
- 16:10butterfly. We're not talking here about
- 16:13Jesus just slightly being enhanced.
- 16:16We're talking about this complete sense of
- 16:19transformation, physically speaking.
- 16:24He transfigured before them, and every single gospel account
- 16:29cannot help but comment on the whiteness of his clothes.
- 16:33Mark says that no one on earth could bleach them.
- 16:35You get the impression here that he's at loss of words, that when
- 16:39Peter told him about what he saw, he's like, I can't, I can't
- 16:42put language to just how pure and just how brilliant his
- 16:48attire was, Matthew says. His face shone like the sun.
- 16:56Luke says that his face was actually altered, so you almost
- 17:04get the impression that this was a sight that left them somewhat
- 17:07speechless. Clearly we saw the reaction.
- 17:10They were terrified. There was this awe.
- 17:13There was something so overwhelming about what they
- 17:16perceived. Surely that's what's going to
- 17:20happen when we see Him and His glory.
- 17:23Surely we are going to be absolutely stunned.
- 17:28I can't wait to see casual Christians see Jesus.
- 17:32I can't wait to see what's going to be on their face when they
- 17:35see Him come and all of his glory and might and strength and
- 17:412nd Thessalonians chapter one, verse 10.
- 17:44We are told that when Jesus does come back for his Saints and
- 17:47glory, you know what our response is going to be?
- 17:50That he might be marveled. At just the sight of Christ is
- 17:57going to cause us to stare at Him and wonder just who He is
- 18:04and not not necessarily His words, just who He is with.
- 18:07His presence will cause us to be an absolute awe.
- 18:14And the Holy Spirit says in Second Thessalonians the Saints,
- 18:18when he comes, will marvel at him, will marvel at him.
- 18:24And there was a sense of that marveling here.
- 18:28Here's Jesus now who just unleashes something and they are
- 18:35now. In the light of this glory.
- 18:39But Luke adds a detail that Mark doesn't mention that Matthew
- 18:43doesn't mention. I don't want you to see it
- 18:45because yes, the timing here. Is after he had taught about
- 18:49suffering and the location here is on top of this mountain.
- 18:53But Luke says Jesus was doing something right before he was
- 18:57transfigured and I want to show it to you in Luke 9.
- 19:01Look here with me in verse 29, Luke 929.
- 19:12And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was
- 19:18altered and his clothing became dazzling white.
- 19:22You know what? Dazzling is?
- 19:23Sparkling. There's a sparkle there.
- 19:27But notice what Luke says as he was praying.
- 19:32Luke loves to tell us about Jesus praying and his gospel
- 19:36record. He tells us that Jesus was.
- 19:38Praying at his baptism, he tells us that he is praying here.
- 19:42And so what's now? We have again.
- 19:43We have another piece to this. Yeah, the disciples were brought
- 19:46up to the mountaintop. But Jesus, before them began to
- 19:51pray, began to commune with the Father.
- 19:58And the Holy Spirit wants to tell us that it was in the
- 20:02praying that the transfiguration occurred.
- 20:05Could Jesus have morphed without prayer?
- 20:09Sure. Because this is not just an
- 20:13observation, This is a detail for your instruction of mine.
- 20:17There is a principle here, and I'm sure you're already aware of
- 20:21it. Christ in his praying knew a
- 20:24certain alteration. Is it any different for you and
- 20:28I that there is a deeper conversion to be known?
- 20:33There is a deeper transformation to experience?
- 20:37There is a clear reflection to be known in the place of prayer,
- 20:45in the place of being in the presence of God and seeking His
- 20:51face. That's the instruction here.
- 20:55That's the example that Christ provides as he was transfigured.
- 21:01You also will know a change to a certain degree.
- 21:06When you know how to sit before the Lord and allow the light of
- 21:11His presence, allow the truth of His Word, allow your heart being
- 21:14open before Him, for Him to speak into your life, and reveal
- 21:18things to your conscience, and to make things known through His
- 21:21Word to. You there is a special depth of
- 21:25change that can be experienced in this place of prayer.
- 21:30You will not know a deeper change unless you know how to
- 21:33value genuine communion with God, and Jesus models that so
- 21:39perfectly. There was a particular glory
- 21:42that shined through him, and I see in the Bible that there is a
- 21:48particular beauty that will be reflected on you and I.
- 21:52When we choose to take our relationship with him seriously
- 21:55in the place of prayer, there's something that he'll do in us
- 21:58and through us that will shine brighter.
- 22:00In the place of prayer, what are the psalmists say in Psalm 34?
- 22:04He says something that I believe echoes the sentiment.
- 22:08He says in verse four I sought the Lord and He answered me and
- 22:11He delivered me from all my fears.
- 22:13Those who look to him or what radiant and their faces will
- 22:19never be ashamed. Those who look to Him are
- 22:24radiant. The looking to him is not just a
- 22:28sense of internal dependency. It's connected with verse 4.
- 22:32There's a looking that is expressed in prayer.
- 22:34I sought the Lord. I'm looking to the Lord.
- 22:39And one of the rewards of that is that there is a radiance, A
- 22:42radiance that comes with a confidence, a trust and
- 22:46enjoyment in the person of Jesus Christ.
- 22:50And and this kind of praying that Jesus prayed, I'm under the
- 22:53impression that it wasn't like a microwave kind of prayer.
- 22:56Can I show you how? You're still in Luke 9, right?
- 22:58While Jesus was praying, what do you think the disciples were
- 23:00doing? Any guess?
- 23:02Look at verse 32. Now Peter and those who are with
- 23:05him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake,
- 23:10they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.
- 23:15We seen them sleeping before in the garden, right?
- 23:19And they were sleeping. According to the Gospels,
- 23:21because of sorrow, their eyes were heavy with sorrow.
- 23:24There's no indication here that they were sorrowful and that's
- 23:26the reason why, though they could have been because they
- 23:28were just told that the Messiah is going to suffer and they're
- 23:30going to suffer. Maybe they were just emotionally
- 23:32drained by that truth and they fell asleep.
- 23:34Or could it be that Jesus was praying and taking his time that
- 23:37they fell asleep Because of that, Jesus gave uninterrupted
- 23:47patient fellowship with the Father and here he is in that
- 23:57place with the Father. And the three disciples there
- 24:01are sleeping, and it is in that moment, at one point where he is
- 24:06transfigured. Can you imagine being asleep
- 24:09while Jesus is being transfigured?
- 24:15You know there are many Christians who can't see the
- 24:17glory of Jesus Christ that they can't get excited about
- 24:19something like Mark Chapter 9 because they're spiritually
- 24:21asleep. They've been lulled to sleep by
- 24:26the love of the things of this world.
- 24:30They've been stimulated to the point where they are distracted
- 24:32and they can't see what Christ wants them to see.
- 24:34I hope you're not spiritually asleep today.
- 24:37I hope you're not getting bored by the revelation of the
- 24:40awesomeness of Christ. If any of us are.
- 24:44May the Lord have mercy and wake us up so that we can see just
- 24:46how amazing He is. And so we see here that there is
- 24:51the timing of the miracle. It was after he taught about the
- 24:54suffering of him himself and the suffering of the disciples.
- 24:58It was while he was praying. But now we come to something
- 25:00interesting, and it's the companions of the miracle.
- 25:03Peter, James, and John were not the only ones in attendance.
- 25:06They were not the only ones who were invited to this event,
- 25:09verse four of Mark 9 tells us. And there appeared to them
- 25:11Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
- 25:18That's. It's not every day Moses and
- 25:22Elijah show up. Especially when they haven't
- 25:25been on earth for thousands and hundreds of years.
- 25:29Moses and Elijah appear on the scene.
- 25:32And this is not by their own volition.
- 25:33This is not by their own will. Clearly, God had ordained and
- 25:37planned and scheduled their appearance here on this
- 25:41mountain. This was planned.
- 25:45This was staged, so to speak. It this was intentional?
- 25:51And the question I'm sure that's running through your mind is
- 25:54why? Why Maybe more than the how,
- 25:58some would say, how did Moses and Elijah appear?
- 26:00But I think the common question is why, out of the great roster
- 26:04of all the Old Testament Saints, why is it that Moses and Elijah
- 26:09were the ones who were summoned to stand with the transfigured
- 26:13Christ and to talk with him? So they weren't standing there
- 26:18stoic like statues. They appeared and there's a
- 26:22conversation going on. And I believe there are a few
- 26:27reasons why it was Moses and Elijah who appeared on the
- 26:32scene. Consider this one, the further
- 26:37confirmation of the identity of Christ.
- 26:40A further confirmation of the identity of Christ.
- 26:42What did Jesus ask the disciples?
- 26:44Not too far back, he asked them. Who do people say that I am?
- 26:49Look back here in Mark chapter eight.
- 26:51Look at verse 27. Jesus went on to his disciples
- 26:54in the villages of Sister Philippi, and on the way he
- 26:56asked his disciples, who do people say that I am?
- 26:59And they told them John the Baptist and others say Elijah
- 27:05and others. One of the prophets, Peter
- 27:09rightly confessed the identity of Jesus Christ and Jesus
- 27:14praised Peter because of that There was number confusion among
- 27:17him or the disciples concerning who he is as Messiah.
- 27:20But if there was any confusion, if there was any confusion,
- 27:25surely it's clarified now that you have Jesus standing there
- 27:28and who's beside him? Elijah.
- 27:30They ain't the same person and he's not one of the prophets.
- 27:36He's not even one of the greatest of prophets, Elijah and
- 27:40even Moses himself. Jesus is unique, and not only is
- 27:45unique, He's greater than Moses. He's greater than Elijah.
- 27:49He stands alone. He's in a category all by
- 27:52himself. And so even through this
- 27:55indirectly, there is somewhat of a further confirmation of the
- 27:59identity of Jesus Christ. But there's another kind of
- 28:02confirmation, not of the identity of Christ per se, but
- 28:05of the testimony of Christ. The Pharisees love to come up
- 28:12with excuses not to listen to Jesus, not to consider him as a
- 28:17candidate for the Messiah that they supposedly were
- 28:19anticipating, and one of their favorite deflections, one of the
- 28:23favorite things that the the Pharisees want to do whenever
- 28:26they were confronted with messianic evidence was appeal to
- 28:30Moses. Say, what do I mean by that?
- 28:33Let me show you in John Chapter 9.
- 28:36In John Chapter 9, after the man born blind was healed, there's
- 28:40this investigation that goes on because they want to know how
- 28:42did this happen. And when it came to the
- 28:45Pharisees who interviewed this man, they said something in John
- 28:49928. There's a lot of Bible today, so
- 28:54I'm encouraged to hear the flipping of those pages.
- 28:56John 928 Look at what these men say.
- 29:02And they reviled him, saying You are his disciple.
- 29:06But we are who? The disciples of Moses.
- 29:11Verse 29. We know that God has spoken to
- 29:14Moses, but As for this man, we don't know where he comes from.
- 29:18There's just like, scorning him. Who's this Jesus?
- 29:20Where did he come from? What's his reputation?
- 29:22What's his testimony? We're followers of Moses.
- 29:27We pledge our allegiance to him. And so as a deflection, they
- 29:33appeal to the authority of Moses.
- 29:36They appeal to the Scriptures concerning Moses, the events
- 29:40tied to Moses. And So what happens on the Mount
- 29:44of Transfiguration? Elijah shows up.
- 29:47And who else shows up? Moses.
- 29:50And what does Moses do? By standing and talking with
- 29:54him, We're going to find out what they talked about.
- 29:58He is now witnessing to Christ. He is now affirming that this is
- 30:05indeed the one that I have spoken of.
- 30:08This is indeed the one that I pointed to.
- 30:10I'm not in disagreement with this Jesus.
- 30:13I pointed to this Jesus. There's no confliction here.
- 30:17There's no two camps here. God spoke of a prophet to come.
- 30:24God spoke of a prophet to come, and you shall listen to him, and
- 30:26this is him. And so the appearance of Moses
- 30:29is somewhat of a rebuke to the Jewish leaders and to all who
- 30:33would try to hide and shield themselves behind him, and how
- 30:38he was a mediator of their covenant.
- 30:41Now Moses shows up. Says no, no, no.
- 30:45It's about Christ. I bear witness that his
- 30:49testimony is true, and so we have a confirmation in their
- 30:53appearance of the testimony of Christ.
- 30:55But that's not the only confirmation.
- 30:56We also have the confirmation of the ability of Christ.
- 31:01And so here's Jesus now, manifesting His glory and
- 31:04allowing that manifestation to comfort the disciples.
- 31:07That OK, he will die, He will suffer many things, but he will
- 31:12come back again. And when he come back, when He
- 31:14comes back, He will conquer and He will defeat all of our
- 31:18enemies, and he will rule and reign forever and ever and ever.
- 31:23But that's not the only message that Jesus sought to convey.
- 31:27Because the appearance of Moses and Elijah was also a message in
- 31:30itself. When they appeared, there was
- 31:33also something that they could comfort themselves in concerning
- 31:36their future glory. Not just the glory of the king,
- 31:40but the glory of the Saints. Elijah and Moses are alive after
- 31:46hundreds and hundreds of years. Elijah and Moses are alive and
- 31:50they're communing with Christ. Elijah most alive.
- 31:54And they they never cease to really live.
- 31:56They're they're still here, existing and vibrant and lively.
- 32:02So when Christ comes to give him a taste of the Kingdom of the
- 32:04power to come, he's also giving them the encouragement that the
- 32:08Saints will also rule and reign with him.
- 32:11The Saints will also live with him, be with him, commune with
- 32:14him. So they had a hope for their
- 32:17tomorrow as well. How did Moses die?
- 32:23He died. He died.
- 32:27How did Elijah enter into the presence of God?
- 32:30Did he die? There's something there as well.
- 32:38Most had died a real death. Elijah entered into the presence
- 32:41of God in a very unique way. How does the scripture portray
- 32:47the Saints in their entrance of the glory?
- 32:50Well, some of us will die. But what is first lesson only in
- 32:52four say that some will be caught up in the air, some will
- 32:58not die when he comes, and they will meet him in the air.
- 33:03And so you even have that kind of a picture there going on with
- 33:06Moses and Elijah. There are some Saints who will
- 33:09die real death physically, but will be brought into his arms.
- 33:13And there are some who will not die, and they will meet the Lord
- 33:17in the air. And so there's resurrection hope
- 33:22here. There's encouragement here.
- 33:25Oh, there's so much more. I wish I can park here.
- 33:28I wish I can just park here with Moses and Elijah.
- 33:32Because there's so many other sub points.
- 33:33Let me give you one to consider. What was Moses's burning desire
- 33:38in the book of Exodus, Chapter 33, Chapter 34, After he was
- 33:44assured that the presence of God would go with him in Israel into
- 33:46the Promised Land, that was not enough for Moses.
- 33:49Moses said, please what? Show me your glory.
- 33:54There's more to you that I want to know.
- 33:56There's more to you that I want to discover.
- 33:58And God was willing to grant that request, but with caution.
- 34:02You will see something of my glory, but you cannot.
- 34:05What? You can't see my face.
- 34:08So hide in the cleft of the rock and I will put my hand there to
- 34:11cover you, and you will see my backside.
- 34:14Moses is more than willing to take what he can get, but oh,
- 34:17Jesus is so merciful and gracious.
- 34:18Why? Because we're told here that
- 34:19here's Jesus in his glory and his face is shining.
- 34:22And who's in the presence of this glory?
- 34:24Moses. Now he's standing in the glory
- 34:28of God with an unveiled face. Jesus didn't hide his face from
- 34:34Moses at this point. What was another desire of
- 34:39Moses? Oh Lord, would you please allow
- 34:41me go to the Promised Land? No.
- 34:43Enough. Stop asking me about this.
- 34:47OK? Where is Moses standing now?
- 34:52He's in the Promised Land. Isn't God gracious?
- 34:56Is any merciful? So we have the companions.
- 35:01We have the companions of this miracle here, Moses and Elijah.
- 35:04And finally, they confirm one last thing.
- 35:07They not just confirm his identity.
- 35:10They don't just confirm his testimony.
- 35:11They don't just confirm his ability, they confirm the
- 35:13centrality of Christ. There is a way of summarizing
- 35:21the library of the Old Testament.
- 35:24The Hebrew scriptures and Jesus tells us how the Jews understood
- 35:29a summary of the description of the scriptures.
- 35:33You know what he said when he talked about the first greatest
- 35:35commandment and the second greatest commandment?
- 35:36He says on these two. Commitments is what the Law and
- 35:41the Prophets made-up. The Law and the Prophets.
- 35:45If you want the reference to, that's in Matthew 22 and Matthew
- 35:4822 verse 40. I believe on these two
- 35:53commandments we have the law and the prophets.
- 35:56Moses represents the law. Elijah represents the prophets.
- 36:03Jesus now standing with them is proclaiming that he is a
- 36:07fulfillment that all that the prophets pointed to, all that
- 36:10the Law spoke of Christ is the substance.
- 36:14All the promises, all the pictures, all the prophecies in
- 36:19the entire library of the Word of God is now here in the flesh.
- 36:24He's here the centrality of Jesus Christ.
- 36:28This is what we've been waiting and longing for.
- 36:30He is now here before you standing and we're told here
- 36:34that they were talking. Moses, Elijah and Jesus.
- 36:38What were they talking about? The disciples sleeping?
- 36:44What were they discussing? What were they conversing?
- 36:46The Bible tells us what they were talking about.
- 36:50And Luke Chapter 9. If you want to know what they
- 36:51were talking about, look at verse 30 and verse 31.
- 36:58It says here in Luke 930 to 31 and behold, 2 men were talking
- 37:02with him, Moses and Elijah. We cover that who appeared in
- 37:07glory and spoke of his departure, spoke of his
- 37:12departure, which was about to be accomplished at Jerusalem.
- 37:16The Greek word for departure is Exodus.
- 37:21So what was the main theme of their conversation?
- 37:24Jesus's. Exit from this world through his
- 37:26death and resurrection. That's what they were talking
- 37:29about. But what were they talking
- 37:32about? I I just, I I had a joy just
- 37:37kicking back and thinking about that Moses and Elijah talking
- 37:42with Jesus about his plan of salvation.
- 37:47Were they encouraging him? Were they praising and adoring
- 37:51him? Was Jesus in return in the
- 37:56conversation, illuminating more things to them?
- 37:59Remember we we heard from brother Mark earlier that the
- 38:02prophets wondered at what time at what point these things were
- 38:06to occur. I wonder if Jesus here in this
- 38:09moment is telling them the greater details of his exodus.
- 38:15Moses led an exodus the people of Israel from Egypt slavery
- 38:19under fair Jesus. Is Exodus going to conquer death
- 38:23so that we can be delivered from Satan and?
- 38:26They're talking about his Exodus.
- 38:28How can you be asleep? Guys wake up.
- 38:32Disciples are snoring. How can you be asleep?
- 38:39But finally they did wake up. They woke up and Jesus standing
- 38:45before them with these two Saints invokes and Peter a
- 38:48response. Now we look at the response of
- 38:50the miracle. Look at verse 5.
- 38:53And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here.
- 38:59Let us make 3 tents, one for you and one for Moses, and 1:00 for
- 39:03Elijah. Oh Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter.
- 39:10Peter's clearly excited. Not only is he excited, but
- 39:13we're told here that they spoke out of terror.
- 39:19He didn't know what to say, so he just, in his fear gave some
- 39:23kind of suggestion. It's a very.
- 39:25Bad idea to make decisions when you're emotional.
- 39:31Don't let your emotions rule you.
- 39:34Don't let them determine your response and your reaction to
- 39:36things. May the Holy Spirit help us to
- 39:38restrain ourselves and to be people who govern ourselves
- 39:42according to His word and truth more than what we feel in a
- 39:45moment, no matter how overwhelming those feelings are.
- 39:48Peter's Peter's terrified. But he's not just saying
- 39:51anything. He's not just saying anything.
- 39:55And that's how some people interpret this, that Peter just
- 39:58kind of randomly uttered something with no value or
- 40:01significance. And to those who wouldn't say
- 40:04that, to say no, Peter is actually saying something, They
- 40:08would say that he's just attempting to be hospitable
- 40:10here, right? Here's Jesus Moslem, Elijah,
- 40:15we'll make some tense if you guys want to stay, we'll make
- 40:17this as much as as comfortable as possible for you.
- 40:20Peter is not even trying to be hospitable here.
- 40:22Peter knows his Bible. And though he misinterpreted
- 40:27many things, he was aware of some things.
- 40:29And he was especially aware concerning the Messianic age
- 40:32when Christ would rule and reign on the earth.
- 40:34He He loved those prophecies. And there is a prophecy in the
- 40:38book of Zachariah that tells us what will happen when Jesus
- 40:44Christ comes in his Second Advent, What will occur on the
- 40:48earth? What will be recognized?
- 40:50What will be celebrated? We get clues and indications of
- 40:54what life will be when Jesus rules and reigns on the earth.
- 40:57And I want to show you one thing that Peter connected with when
- 41:01he said this. Go to Zechariah 14 with me,
- 41:05please. And in verse 16.
- 41:14Now, mind you, this is speaking about when Jesus returns to the
- 41:17earth in judgment, in vengeance and glory.
- 41:23And what are we told in Zechariah 1416 then?
- 41:26Everyone who survives of all the nations in light of His judgment
- 41:29on the earth that have come against Jerusalem.
- 41:32We'd read that in book of in the Book of Revelation, don't we?
- 41:34The nation's coming against Jerusalem shall go up year after
- 41:39year to worship the king, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the
- 41:42feast of booths. So some of the the vitical
- 41:50feasts will be recognized during the millennial reign, not all of
- 41:53them. Some of them.
- 41:53And one of them will be the feasts of booths.
- 41:55And during the feasts of booths, the Jews would actually create
- 41:58booths or tents as a way of rehearsing God's faithfulness
- 42:06and protection during the wilderness.
- 42:07But more than that, then being settled and God being in their
- 42:13midst. And so here's how Peter is
- 42:18interpreting what's happening. Jesus is making his glory known,
- 42:26and I can imagine what was in his heart.
- 42:28Oh, this is it. Yes.
- 42:32He's not going to suffer. Here's the Here's what we've
- 42:35been waiting for. This is what we've been asking
- 42:38for. Hallelujah.
- 42:40Here's Jesus in his glory. Oh, we got some old Saints now
- 42:44that are here. This is the moment.
- 42:48Let's get our tents ready, because in Zachary 1416, he says
- 42:51that if we're going to worship the king when he comes, we're
- 42:53going to worship him with the feast of booth.
- 42:55So we'll get one for you, we'll get one for you, we'll get one
- 42:57for you. This is it.
- 43:00And what's so funny actually, is that you can imagine Peter's
- 43:03angst, because in Luke's version, we're told here in Luke
- 43:07933 and Luke 933, we're told, And as the men were parting from
- 43:14him, who are the men? Moses and Elijah.
- 43:17As the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus,
- 43:20Master, it is good that we are here.
- 43:22So imagine this. Now you have the three, the, the
- 43:25crust coming out of their eyes. You have Jesus, Moses and
- 43:28Elijah. And at this point Moses and
- 43:30Elijah are walking away. And Peter registers this enough
- 43:35to realize, oh, this is this is Jesus coming with power.
- 43:38This is Jesus coming. Glory and Moses.
- 43:40No, no, no, no. It's good that we're here.
- 43:42No, no, no. Come, come.
- 43:43I'll have a 10 for you all, but don't leave.
- 43:46Please don't leave. Peter still didn't get it.
- 43:56Peter still after the rebuke. Get behind me, Satan, after the
- 44:00clear teaching. He's still holding on to this
- 44:05idea that Christ is not going to suffer and die, and when Jesus
- 44:12gives them hope for tomorrow, some kind of revelation to
- 44:16prepare them for their own suffering and his suffering,
- 44:18Peters completely misinterprets it.
- 44:21And he thinks that Jesus is coming full-fledged now, yes.
- 44:24Here's some tense Let's do this. And this is not the only
- 44:29response to this miracle, because there is another
- 44:31response that comes now. There's another interjection.
- 44:33There's another intervention. Not by Moses, not by Elijah.
- 44:38Not even by the Lord Jesus himself.
- 44:40What are read of verse 7? And a cloud overshadowed them.
- 44:48And a voice came out of the cloud.
- 44:51This is my beloved son. Listen to him.
- 44:57Well, that makes sense in light of Peter's response, right?
- 45:00Let's build some tents. And who comes to correct Peter?
- 45:05God the Father overshadowing the scene.
- 45:11You're not listening. This is my beloved son.
- 45:16Listen to him. Listen to him and one gospel
- 45:21account, it says. While Peter was speaking, the
- 45:23cloud came. So the Lord of glory, the Father
- 45:31intervenes with this cloud. And this is not some random
- 45:34mist. This is not some kind of curtain
- 45:37closing to this miracle. A cloud here is intentional.
- 45:42Has God appeared in a cloud before?
- 45:45Oh, if you know the Old Testament, yes.
- 45:46More than once. Many times has the Lord appeared
- 45:48in the cloud. And not only has He appeared in
- 45:50the cloud, there was some significant moments where He
- 45:53appeared in the cloud. And through that cloud of voice
- 45:55came and the most. I can't think of a more
- 46:01significant event than an Exodus 19 on Mount Sinai.
- 46:06When God called Moses to prepare the nation of Israel to appear
- 46:09before him, and God would manifest in his power and might,
- 46:13and one of the manifestations would indeed be a cloud, a thick
- 46:16cloud, we are told in Exodus 19. And when that cloud descended
- 46:21upon that mountain, a voice came through.
- 46:25And the reason for that display of glory was to affirm was to
- 46:30define, was to sign off on the law that would be given as a
- 46:36covenant was being established. In other words when God came
- 46:41with that cloud on Mount Sinai, he was demonstrating to the
- 46:45people of the authority of the law.
- 46:49This is coming from heaven. This is coming from me.
- 46:54This is not man made. I'm showing you that this law is
- 46:59authoritative, and I bear witness to this law in this
- 47:03covenant. And you'll be held accountable
- 47:05based on how you respond to it. Now what do we see?
- 47:13Years, hundreds of years go by. And here's Jesus now and Jesus
- 47:18Christ. He's on a mountain.
- 47:23And while he's on a mountain, a cloud comes and covers him, and
- 47:29a voice speaks through the Where do we see that?
- 47:32Exodus 19A. Cloud comes and a voice comes
- 47:35through the cloud. What do we see here?
- 47:36In Mark chapter 9A, cloud comes and a voice is spoken through.
- 47:41Why did God the Father choose to manifest himself in this way?
- 47:46For the same reason why He did back in Exodus 19, to show to
- 47:51the disciples. Then the same way I manifested
- 47:55to give authority and to sign off on the legitimacy of the
- 47:58law. I'm doing now the same for my
- 48:00son. Listen to him.
- 48:05Listen to him. Listen to him.
- 48:09He has authority. I've set my seal upon him.
- 48:17And so now we see this Old Testament, imagery.
- 48:20Mountain Cloud, Voice. Covenant, New Testament, Jesus,
- 48:25mountain, cloud. He's ready to give a new
- 48:28covenant. And a cloud overshadowed them
- 48:36And voice came out of the cloud. This is my beloved son.
- 48:40Listen to him. Here's where we're ending.
- 48:47What Matthew said concerning the father statement is a little bit
- 48:52expanded and compares it to Mark.
- 48:55I want you to see it in Matthew 17, verse five,
- 49:10he was still speaking when behold, a bright cloud
- 49:16overshadowed them in a voice from the cloud said, This is my
- 49:20beloved son with whom I am well. Pleased listen to him, Matthew
- 49:29adds, with whom I am well, pleased.
- 49:36Now we look at this and we see that the Father bears witness of
- 49:38the Son. We see that He expresses the
- 49:42divine nature of the Son. This is my beloved Son.
- 49:45Not just the divine nature of the Son, but the divine love
- 49:49that the Father shared with the Son.
- 49:53And this is him telling the disciples who would carry on the
- 49:56message of Christ. Listen to him, stop mishearing
- 50:01what he's saying. Understand that.
- 50:04He is the one that you've been waiting for.
- 50:06He is the one that I put my seal on.
- 50:08He is the one that is going to bring in a new covenant.
- 50:10Look, you're on the mountain. Here's the cloud.
- 50:11Isn't this ring of Bell disciples?
- 50:16I was talking to my dad about this last night.
- 50:17He brought up something that I thought, wow, that's so
- 50:19significant. This statement in itself is is
- 50:24profound on its own, but there's much more to it if you really
- 50:30look at it. What the father says of the son
- 50:32is dripping. Absolutely dripping with Old
- 50:38Testament relevance, Old Testament truth, particularly
- 50:43concerning Jesus Christ. In other words, I argue before
- 50:49you today that when the Father says this is my beloved Son with
- 50:54whom I am well pleased, listen to him was a strategic statement
- 51:02that for the careful I would see that these are components within
- 51:07the Hebrew Bible that pointed to Jesus Christ.
- 51:12In other words, this is a profound statement that is in
- 51:15essence an echo in echo, something that you have read if
- 51:21you have covered the Old Testament.
- 51:22And when the father says this, there should be something in you
- 51:25that goes, I kind of heard something similar to this.
- 51:30I've kind of seen something close to this.
- 51:33If you do the work, you realize the father is saying something
- 51:37even deeper than just what he is offering on the surface.
- 51:43So let's take a breath, right. A lot of scripture, a lot of
- 51:46turning. This is my beloved Son with whom
- 51:54I am well pleased. Listen to him.
- 52:00You ready? Psalm Chapter 2, verse seven.
- 52:04We're going to turn to three places, and I promise you we're
- 52:07ending Psalm, Chapter 2, verse 7.
- 52:29Psalm 27 I will tell of the decree the Lord said to me, You
- 52:35are my son. Today I have begotten you who
- 52:42fulfilled the Psalm Jesus fulfilled in more than one
- 52:45place. Is this Psalm quoted and is
- 52:48given to Christ. You are my son.
- 52:52Hold on to that. You are my son.
- 52:54Go to Isaiah 42. Isaiah 42 verse one you are my

- 53:19Isaiah 42 one. Behold, my servant whom I
- 53:23uphold, my chosen in whom my soul delights, in whom my soul
- 53:33delights. Here is the Father, expressing

- 54:27Moses says from among you, from from your brothers.
- 54:30It is to him you shall listen. What did the Father say when

- 55:11You know what's significant about the locations of each of
- 55:13those components? Each of those expressions and

- 55:40When Jesus in the end of Luke 24 appears before his disciples in
- 55:44his resurrected form, you don't have to turn there.
- 55:46Let me read to you what Jesus said to his disciples, he said
- 55:49in Luke 24 verse 44. This he said to him.
- 55:53These are my words, that I spoke to you while I was still with
- 55:56you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and
- 56:01the prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.

- 56:24This is him. Now listen and suddenly verse
- 56:32eight of Mark 9 looking around, they no longer saw anyone with
- 56:34him but Jesus only. It's all about Jesus when you
- 56:41read the prophets. It's about Jesus.
- 56:43When you read the Psalms points to Jesus when you read the law.
- 56:46Even in the law. Yeah, the law that we feel
- 56:48nervous about. The law that we think is boring,
- 56:50even in the law. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
- 56:54And here's the Father saying, this is him.
- 56:57This is him. Is any worthy of worship, Is any
- 57:00worthy of adoration. Is your heart not moved to see
- 57:03that what you have in your hands, what you just heard in
- 57:05the past hour and a few minutes is a supernatural reality.
- 57:10Oh, I pray that God would receive glory and what we heard
- 57:14today. That we would love him, obey
- 57:16him, and listen. Listen to him.
