- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Monday of Christmas
- 0:16week. Yes, it's the 22nd of December
- 0:19and we are just around the corner from that very, very
- 0:22happiest of days. And so this week, this week is
- 0:25gonna be fantastic. Today we are going to have the
- 0:28glorious and triumphant end of the book of Daniel.
- 0:31And then from tomorrow, we are going to open the Book of Luke
- 0:35and begin reading through that preparation for Christmas.
- 0:39And then on Thursday, we'll celebrate Christmas together,
- 0:41friends with that beautiful Christmas Bible reading.
- 0:45And then over the rest of December and January, we are
- 0:48going to be working our way through that spectacular gospel
- 0:51written to convince us that Jesus is indeed Lord and we are
- 0:56invited to be his people. So, so much to come.
- 1:00But today, today we are going to finish the book of Daniel.
- 1:04And you might remember our reading from Thursday last week
- 1:07was a hard one. It was just one battle after
- 1:10another. And I'm not talking about the
- 1:11new movie in the cinemas at the moment.
- 1:13I'm talking about that prophecy of just battle after battle
- 1:17after battle where the populations just got squeezed
- 1:20and destroyed and revenged upon. And it was just a terrible,
- 1:25terrible story. But today, today we hear that
- 1:29God will be ultimately victorious and that his victory
- 1:35brings life to all of his people.
- 1:37So this is a glorious way to end.
- 1:39And if you are a Sadducee, you might just need to block your
- 1:42ears because this is going to be one of the key texts that all of
- 1:46the Pharisees used to use to prove resurrection of the body.
- 1:50And the Sadducees, yeah, not their cup of tea.
- 1:53Anyway, that is beyond the point.
- 1:54Let us read this happy ending to this book of Daniel that draws
- 1:59all these themes together in God's triumph over history.
- 2:03As we read together Daniel chapter 12.
- 2:16At that time, Michael, the Archangel who stands guard over
- 2:20your nation will arise. Then there will be a time of
- 2:24anguish greater than any since nations first came into
- 2:28existence. But at that time, every one of
- 2:32your people whose name is written in the book will be
- 2:35rescued. Many of those whose bodies lie
- 2:39dead and buried will rise up, some to everlasting life, and
- 2:44some to shame and everlasting disgrace.
- 2:47Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who
- 2:52lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever.
- 2:57But you, Daniel, keep this prophecy a secret.
- 3:01Seal up the book until the time of the end, when many will rush
- 3:05here and there and knowledge will increase.
- 3:09Then I Daniel looked and saw two others standing at opposite
- 3:14banks of the river. One of them asked the man
- 3:16dressed in linen, who was now standing above the river.
- 3:19How long will it be until these shocking events are over?
- 3:24The man dressed in linen who was standing over the river, raised
- 3:27both his hands toward heaven and took a solemn oath by the one
- 3:31who lives forever, saying it will go on for a time, times and
- 3:38half a time. When the shattering of the holy
- 3:42people has finally come to an end, all these things will have
- 3:46happened. I heard what he said, but I did
- 3:50not understand what he meant. So I asked, how will all this
- 3:54finally end, my Lord? But he said, Go now, Daniel, for
- 3:59what I have said is kept secret and sealed until the time of the
- 4:04end. Many will be purified, cleansed
- 4:07and refined by these trials, but the wicked will continue in
- 4:11their wickedness and none of them will understand.
- 4:15Only those who are wise will know what it means.
- 4:19From the time the daily sacrifice has stopped and the
- 4:23sacrilegious object that causes desecration is set up to be
- 4:26worshipped, there will be 1290 days.
- 4:31And blessed are those who wait and remain until the end of the
- 4:351335 days. As for you go your way until the
- 4:42end, you will rest, and then at the end of the days you will
- 4:47rise again to receive the inheritance set aside for you.
- 5:03Oh Jesus, thank you for this call to us, a call to us to be
- 5:08patient, a call to us to persevere, and an assurance to
- 5:13us that at the end of all things there is you.
- 5:17You, our glorious, beautiful, loving Saviour, with your arms
- 5:22spread wide, ready to welcome us at the end of all toil.
- 5:27Lord, when we are in the midst of a hard chapter of our lives,
- 5:32when things seem dire and we are struggling and suffering, maybe
- 5:37it's the context of our life. Maybe it's our faith in you that
- 5:40is causing us to be a derided or or excluded.
- 5:45Lord, I pray that you just hold us and remind us, just as Daniel
- 5:51does, that we are yours, that we are loved, and then ultimately
- 5:57you will restore us just as you plan.
- 6:02So we love you, and we praise you as our mighty and victorious
- 6:05God, and we lift you up and praise you and pray all these
- 6:09things in your name, Jesus, Amen.
