- 0:00Speaker 1: Email.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Oh in trap.
- 0:05Speaker 3: So we had a couple months ago the band Slick
- 0:10Speaker 3: Rock Drifters here in studio. You might remember we were
- 0:16Speaker 3: telling talking about a show that we were going to
- 0:18Speaker 3: have at the Masonic Temple and it was a fundraiser
- 0:21Speaker 3: for kids literacy something like that. I seem to recall
- 0:27Speaker 3: Nic I'll probably come in here in a minute and
- 0:29Speaker 3: remind me.
- 0:29Speaker 4: What it was.
- 0:31Speaker 3: But while while they were here, one of the guys
- 0:35Speaker 3: Skip in the band, he sort of leaned over to
- 0:40Speaker 3: me when we were off the air, and he said,
- 0:43Speaker 3: you know, your dad and my dad were friends and
- 0:49Speaker 3: our family spaghetti sauce recipe is the recipe that my
- 0:54Speaker 3: dad got from your dad. That was your grandma's, your
- 0:58Speaker 3: grandmother's dress, and this is not anything that I have
- 1:02Speaker 3: ever had or my sister's ever had.
- 1:04Speaker 4: And I'm like, oh my gosh, could.
- 1:05Speaker 1: You your father would give it to some guy but
- 1:07Speaker 1: not pass it on to his daughters.
- 1:09Speaker 3: I said, I said, could you would you get it
- 1:12Speaker 3: for me? And he said yeah? And I didn't think.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I thought that'd be the last I hear of it,
- 1:17Speaker 3: But I got this email, Higena. I promised I'd send
- 1:20Speaker 3: you your dad's or grandma's a spaghetti sauce recipe. My
- 1:23Speaker 3: dad was a friend of Tom's and had the original,
- 1:26Speaker 3: which I'm sure was ruined with splashes of spaghetti sauce
- 1:29Speaker 3: through the years. Now that's what I wanted. I wanted
- 1:31Speaker 3: the original piece of paper with spaghetti sauce splashes on it,
- 1:36Speaker 3: because I would have framed that and put it in
- 1:38Speaker 3: my kitchen.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Well, writing back and telling you demand the original, ret.
- 1:42Speaker 3: He said, I retyped it and based on the green marker,
- 1:46Speaker 3: looks like my wife has made notes on it.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Sorry, this is the best I could do.
- 1:50Speaker 1: But it's still okay.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Thanks for having our band on. We had about three
- 1:54Speaker 3: hundred people at the temple.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Oh, call it a success.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:58Speaker 3: So here is Mama Barberis spaghetti sauce recipe.
- 2:01Speaker 1: All right, the one that's been kept from you for.
- 2:04Speaker 3: All these apparently, uh, one to two pounds of fresh
- 2:08Speaker 3: ground beef.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Soy sauce. That's weird, isn't it. Little salt, it's a
- 2:16Speaker 4: little umami.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Get that in there.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Half a yellow onion, half a red onion, mixed, two
- 2:25Speaker 3: cans of tomato sauce, all right, oregano, no amount, Just
- 2:34Speaker 3: two tablespoon sugar, all right? Tablespoon thyme, garlic cloves, you know,
- 2:41Speaker 3: as many as you want, uh, A couple of parsley flakes,
- 2:46Speaker 3: a teaspoon of fennel seeds.
- 2:50Speaker 4: That's a couple kind of weird things in there, isn't it.
- 2:54Speaker 1: The soy sauce is particularly.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Isn't that sort of But I.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Think you're right, it's just for it gives it down.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Yeah. Like I like, if somebody had said, what do
- 3:03Speaker 4: you think.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Your your grandmother's you know, secret ingredient is, I wouldn't
- 3:09Speaker 3: have said soy sauce.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Now you know another thing that you could use, probably
- 3:14Speaker 1: the same way, is it would be a tablespoon of
- 3:17Speaker 1: Worcelster sauce.
- 3:18Speaker 4: That's what I was going to ask if you thought that.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Would be similar. Yeah, when I make certain soups, particularly
- 3:25Speaker 1: chicken noodle soup, I'll always put a little Worcester sauce
- 3:29Speaker 1: in it.
- 3:30Speaker 3: So this say is saute onions, garlic, add the hamburger
- 3:33Speaker 3: and soy sauce. Cook until brown, then add sugar, parsley, thyme, simmer.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Two to three hours.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you gotta let it.
- 3:43Speaker 3: So I maybe over this weekend, not that I cook
- 3:48Speaker 3: in my house. You'll give it to Maybe I will
- 3:51Speaker 3: give this to Joe to try.
- 3:54Speaker 1: It's pretty simple, it.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Is, but I just a couple of things, like the
- 3:58Speaker 4: soy sauce was we I would use a lot of.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I don't think they had Worcester.
- 4:04Speaker 2: That's what I'm wondering that back in the old days.
- 4:06Speaker 4: This is an old recipe, so I'm curious.
- 4:10Speaker 1: So I don't think it might not have been as common.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Easy to find. Yeah, so I don't know.
- 4:17Speaker 3: I will I will hand this over to the chef
- 4:21Speaker 3: in my house and report back.
- 4:23Speaker 4: But I'm kind of excited because.
- 4:24Speaker 3: I remember eating my grandmother's cooking and how delicious it was.
- 4:30Speaker 3: But I desperately would like the original handwritten one with
- 4:35Speaker 3: the spaghetti sauce. That like that would be a treasure,
- 4:37Speaker 3: Like if your house was on fire, what would you grab?
- 4:40Speaker 4: I would grab that.
- 4:41Speaker 1: We'll ask him if you can have it.
- 4:43Speaker 4: I think he just said it's been lost.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Through the lost to the Yeah, sends of time.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Hm. But what what a gift though, like that that
- 4:55Speaker 3: he was here and thought of that, and like, you know,
- 4:57Speaker 3: I have your grandmother's recipe. That's I'm so happy he
- 5:02Speaker 3: spoke up and said something and sent it to me.
- 5:04Speaker 4: It was so nice.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Thank you skip uh who says had ginus send it
- 5:07Speaker 2: to me?
- 5:09Speaker 4: You want to give it?
- 5:10Speaker 2: Give it a go, see what happens.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It sounds pretty straightforward. Yeah, I don't. I'm not quite
- 5:17Speaker 1: sure why you. I mean, it doesn't hurt anything, but
- 5:20Speaker 1: I'm not sure what it would add to have both
- 5:23Speaker 1: red and yellow onion. I don't know.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Do they have slightly different tastes?
- 5:27Speaker 1: They do well, yeah, but you cook them, and you know.
- 5:29Speaker 2: It red as sweeter onions, more more baked basic.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know.
- 5:34Speaker 2: So maybe it's a.
- 5:37Speaker 4: I want to try it.
- 5:38Speaker 1: All right, and then I want you to put some
- 5:41Speaker 1: put it in a bottle and bring it to us.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Can we start selling it?
- 5:46Speaker 1: Well, maybe I have to try it first.
- 5:48Speaker 5: I think there are permits that are Yeah, you know,
- 5:53Speaker 5: I noticed an ingredient that was missing from that list.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Love every Grandma's rest and how much loved? How do
- 6:08Speaker 4: you measure that?
- 6:10Speaker 2: Three quarter cups?
- 6:11Speaker 3: My mom used to have and I think this was
- 6:14Speaker 3: like a Mormon ward Mother's Day gift thing that was
- 6:18Speaker 3: passed out and some of her friends gave it to her.
- 6:20Speaker 3: It was a little tin can, like a like a
- 6:22Speaker 3: seasoning can, and it just said love on it, and
- 6:26Speaker 3: on the back it said put a pinch of this
- 6:28Speaker 3: and every and it was just an empty you know
- 6:31Speaker 3: you left it on the can.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you put cocaine in it. That's what it's for. See.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I wish I had my Radio from Hell cookbook.
- 6:39Speaker 5: It's on my desk all the way over there. I
- 6:41Speaker 5: wish I had it here because I would go through
- 6:42Speaker 5: and see if there was another spaghetti sauce respite.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I don't think we had a spaghetti sauce wress. We
- 6:46Speaker 3: know in there it's a lot of funeral potatoes.
- 6:49Speaker 5: I mean there's a whole section that is funeral potatoes,
- 6:52Speaker 5: which which my my nieces from Texas. Uh, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 5: when they were talking about how you know barbecue you
- 7:00Speaker 5: is the thing in Texas, I said, well, yeah, we've
- 7:02Speaker 5: got funeral potatoes.
- 7:04Speaker 2: What's funeral potatoes?
- 7:05Speaker 4: It sounds bad, and I tried.
- 7:07Speaker 2: To explain it to them. I don't think I did
- 7:09Speaker 2: a very good job.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Funeral potatoes are most often pretty terrible. I think disagree
- 7:18Speaker 1: people make them, but they don't do a good job.
- 7:21Speaker 1: If you do a if you there's a way to
- 7:23Speaker 1: do it so that they're good. But I think people
- 7:25Speaker 1: just sort of dash them together. And I've been to
- 7:32Speaker 1: a lot of funerals, so you've had a lot of them.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Yeah, a lot of death, a lot of potatoes.
- 7:40Speaker 1: But I always take my little my little can that
- 7:42Speaker 1: says love on it, Sprinkle a little, a little pinch
- 7:47Speaker 1: of love.
- 7:48Speaker 5: They're called hash brown or potato cast role in the
- 7:50Speaker 5: Midwest apparently, but we call them funeral potatoes here.
- 7:54Speaker 4: It's a better name, for sure.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Oh wow.
- 7:58Speaker 5: But Tristan says, I'll never forgive the guy who made
- 8:01Speaker 5: funeral potatoes for Gordon ramsay, he made it like soup
- 8:05Speaker 5: and it looked horrible.
- 8:06Speaker 2: No, that's not ruined it.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Yeah, there, I've run across that. You know, it's just
- 8:11Speaker 1: not good. You know, you go to a funeral and
- 8:13Speaker 1: everybody brings something, and they bring these soupy.
- 8:16Speaker 2: These are people who don't know what they're doing.
- 8:18Speaker 5: Yeah, you always have the Relief Society make the funeral
- 8:22Speaker 5: potatoes because they've made their share.
- 8:24Speaker 4: They're the professionals. Leave it to the professionals.
- 8:30Speaker 2: He says, no mushroom soup in your funeral potatoes.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 8:33Speaker 2: I'm try it. I try it.
- 8:39Speaker 1: My mom had.
- 8:39Speaker 5: A cookbook that was from Campbell's and it was just
- 8:42Speaker 5: cooking with soups.
- 8:44Speaker 4: That's the who's the secret ingredient?
- 8:47Speaker 2: It was recipes based around cooking with soup.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Well, that's the famous green bean casserole is based around
- 8:52Speaker 1: Campbell's something soup in the mushroom.
- 8:56Speaker 3: That story about the Campbell soup guy saying it's poor
- 9:00Speaker 3: people food.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Remember that.
- 9:04Speaker 3: My husband went out and bought a bunch of Campbell's soup.
- 9:07Speaker 3: I'm like, what are you doing?
- 9:08Speaker 4: And he's He's like it.
- 9:10Speaker 2: It made him stay something.
- 9:12Speaker 3: It made him nostalgic, or because when we were young,
- 9:16Speaker 3: that's the only soup we had that Campbell.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Other than I mean, if you'd have homemade soup.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Yeah, but I mean if you went to the grocery
- 9:23Speaker 3: store about soup. It was so, I have like several
- 9:26Speaker 3: cans of Campbell soup.
- 9:27Speaker 4: In my house.
- 9:29Speaker 3: I can't remember what he got, but it's it's just weird.
- 9:33Speaker 3: We haven't had canble soup.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And I hope you need I hope you said to him,
- 9:38Speaker 1: if you bought that stuff, you better damn well.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Oh he has. He's like been having it for lunch.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Would you look up and see if they still make
- 9:45Speaker 5: the cheddar cheese soup Campbell's because.
- 9:48Speaker 2: That was terrible.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Cream of celery remember that one.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, no soup terrible.
- 10:01Speaker 5: All right, well there was an email, little email in
- 10:07Speaker 5: tract and we're sorry about the political nature of our discussion.
- 10:11Speaker 2: This show us so political.
