- 0:00Speaker 1: So the king returned and came to Jordan, and Judah
- 0:03Speaker 1: came to Gilgal to go to meet the king to
- 0:06Speaker 1: conduct the king over Jordan. 2 Samuel 19.15 My Lord,
- 0:14Speaker 1: when thoughts try to invade my mind, with tenacity and
- 0:19Speaker 1: grit I will drive them out, like Joab and Abishai
- 0:23Speaker 1: in 2 Samuel 19. I will not give the negative
- 0:27Speaker 1: thoughts and ungodly beliefs the time and space to overthrow
- 0:31Speaker 1: the truth of God's word in my heart. I decree
- 0:35Speaker 1: and declare that, like David's mighty men, I will speak
- 0:39Speaker 1: the word of God over those limiting beliefs and watch
- 0:43Speaker 1: them crumble under the weight of your power and your glory, Lord.
- 0:48Speaker 1: When the thoughts seem like too many, when they seem
- 0:52Speaker 1: to come unrelenting, I will not stop in my pursuit
- 0:56Speaker 1: to speak life over myself and my loved ones. Like
- 1:01Speaker 1: King David, you have set me in this new life, God.
- 1:06Speaker 1: And through the power of your Holy Spirit, I will
- 1:09Speaker 1: conquer and subdue all ungodly thoughts and beliefs in my mind.
- 1:15Speaker 1: In Jesus' name. Amen. Thanks for making prayer a priority
- 1:22Speaker 1: in your life. To hear the Bible come to life,
- 1:26Speaker 1: stay tuned for The Bible in a Year. Brought to
- 1:29Speaker 1: you by Bibleinayear.com.
- 1:42Speaker 2: David returns to Jerusalem. In our last story, we witnessed
- 1:48Speaker 2: the short-lived coup of Absalom. Having just taken over the
- 1:52Speaker 2: throne of David, Absalom's army was defeated in battle by
- 1:56Speaker 2: David's mighty men. Their skill was unmatched, and Absalom died
- 2:01Speaker 2: hanging on a tree. David was so busy mourning his
- 2:05Speaker 2: son's death that he did not comfort or encourage his people. Joab,
- 2:10Speaker 2: as a good friend should, rebuked David. In this story,
- 2:14Speaker 2: David's kinship is restored, but not without resistance from within.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Inspired by the book of 2 Samuel.
- 2:25Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:27Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:30Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
- 2:34Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:36Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:40Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:42Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:45Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 2:48Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 2:51Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 2:55Speaker 3: to get a copy of the Jesus book, simply go
- 2:58Speaker 3: to jackgram.org slash Jesus. That's jackgram.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:05Speaker 3: you for your support. In yesterday's episode, Absalom's army was
- 3:11Speaker 3: quickly defeated by David's men and Absalom himself met an
- 3:15Speaker 3: early end as he tried to flee from capture. David
- 3:18Speaker 3: was devastated by the death of his son. Even though
- 3:21Speaker 3: Absalom was had sought to take away his throne and
- 3:24Speaker 3: kill his father. When David's commander and closest friend Joab
- 3:28Speaker 3: saw how David's sorrow overshadowed his gratitude for all that
- 3:32Speaker 3: his people had done to restore their king, he called
- 3:34Speaker 3: him out. David recognized that Joab was right and finally
- 3:38Speaker 3: rose up to speak to his people. Today we'll hear
- 3:42Speaker 3: about David returning to Jerusalem to restore his kingship. It
- 3:46Speaker 3: would not be all smooth sailing, as the effects of
- 3:48Speaker 3: the divisions Absalom had brought about continue to be felt
- 3:52Speaker 3: throughout the kingdom. But David will demonstrate what a good
- 3:56Speaker 3: king is like, seeking peace with those who opposed him. So,
- 4:00Speaker 3: once again, let's listen to God's word today.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Absalom was dead, but the discord and doubt he sowed
- 4:09Speaker 2: into the people was not yet killed. People grumbled and
- 4:13Speaker 2: quarreled among themselves as to whether David should be king
- 4:16Speaker 2: or not. David knew that the only way to settle
- 4:19Speaker 2: the hearts of the people was to settle the hearts
- 4:21Speaker 2: of Absalom's closest followers. He spoke kindly with Absalom's priests
- 4:26Speaker 2: and generals and greeted them with compassion. He spoke with
- 4:30Speaker 2: them about having a place in his ranks and counsel
- 4:33Speaker 2: by his side. Although David was a man of war,
- 4:36Speaker 2: his default was always peace. So David was welcomed back
- 4:40Speaker 2: into Jerusalem. having the full support of those who were
- 4:44Speaker 2: once loyal to Absalom. Dysfunction and sorrow still hid in
- 4:48Speaker 2: the shadows of Israel. Slowly, people began to emerge and
- 4:52Speaker 2: fall at the feet of David, ashamed of their treachery.
- 4:56Speaker 2: The first among them was a man named Shammai. He
- 4:59Speaker 2: begged David to forgive him for serving Absalom. Abishai, one
- 5:04Speaker 2: of David's mighty men, encouraged David to put him to death. However,
- 5:08Speaker 2: David looked at him with compassion and said, This is
- 5:12Speaker 2: not a day for death and execution. Today I am
- 5:15Speaker 2: king of Israel again. So David spared him. Next was
- 5:20Speaker 2: a man named Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son. Mephibosheth was a crippled
- 5:25Speaker 2: boy who used to dwell in the palace of David.
- 5:28Speaker 2: David cared for him deeply and was grieved when he
- 5:31Speaker 2: did not join him when he escaped. Mephibosheth was grieved
- 5:35Speaker 2: as well and said that he was kept from doing so.
- 5:38Speaker 2: David forgave him and restored to him some land Some
- 5:42Speaker 2: of this land would reside in Bethlehem, where a certain
- 5:45Speaker 2: inn with a stable would be built. Small disputes continued
- 5:49Speaker 2: to arise among the people. The ten tribes of Israel
- 5:53Speaker 2: were angry with Judah because they felt they had special
- 5:56Speaker 2: privileges to the king. So David continued to navigate the
- 6:00Speaker 2: messy politics of pleasing people. He rallied elders, made treaties,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and spoke with clansmen. David was originally a man made
- 6:09Speaker 2: for battles. However, this was a time for him to
- 6:11Speaker 2: be a governor. The nation continued to squabble, but slowly
- 6:16Speaker 2: the people began to heal and experience unity once again. However,
- 6:21Speaker 2: a remnant of rebellion lurked in the shadows. A man
- 6:25Speaker 2: named Sheba waited for his moment to strike. In the
- 6:29Speaker 2: tribe of Benjamin, a loud trumpet could be heard blowing
- 6:32Speaker 2: throughout the streets. Sheba and a small band of rebels chanted,'
- 6:36Speaker 2: Down with the dynasty of David!' Rally, O you men
- 6:40Speaker 2: of Israel, down with David. His words began to catch fire,
- 6:46Speaker 2: and men began to join Sheba in his rebellion. Dozens
- 6:49Speaker 2: became hundreds, and hundreds became thousands. David dwelled in Judah,
- 6:54Speaker 2: continuing his work among the city. David sent Amasa, Absalom's
- 6:59Speaker 2: old general, and asked him to assemble an army in Judah.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Amasa left immediately. However, he did not get to Judah
- 7:07Speaker 2: in time. David beckoned Abishai and said, So Abishai and
- 7:21Speaker 2: Joab banded together with David's mighty men. They gathered warriors
- 7:26Speaker 2: and set out to go after Sheba. When Abishai and
- 7:29Speaker 2: Joab reached the outskirts of Judah, they saw Amasa. Amasa
- 7:34Speaker 2: was asked to assemble an army for David but did not.
- 7:37Speaker 2: This enraged Joab. Joab could see right through Amasa. His
- 7:42Speaker 2: neglect would sabotage David. Joab faked a smile and hid
- 7:46Speaker 2: his dagger under his belt. Joab walked towards Amasa saying, Greetings, brother.
- 7:51Speaker 3: How are you?
- 7:53Speaker 2: The two of them hugged and Amasa felt a sharp
- 7:55Speaker 2: jolt in his stomach. Joab whispered in Amasa's ear, Traitor.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And Amasa fell to the ground with a dagger in
- 8:03Speaker 2: his side. Joab and Abishai left Amasa there to bleed.
- 8:08Speaker 2: and die. With intent and drive, they continued their march
- 8:12Speaker 2: towards Sheba.
- 8:17Speaker 3: As we begin today, Absalom is gone. His illegitimate reign
- 8:21Speaker 3: was short-lived and David is now returning to the throne.
- 8:25Speaker 3: But though Absalom is dead, the ripple effects of the
- 8:28Speaker 3: lies that he told are being felt. There is division
- 8:32Speaker 3: among the people as to whether David should return to power.
- 8:36Speaker 3: How would King David handle these divisions? The question is
- 8:39Speaker 3: about his own legitimacy as ruler of God's people. There was,
- 8:43Speaker 3: of course, the option of force. David and his mighty
- 8:46Speaker 3: men had shown their power in battle. He could have
- 8:48Speaker 3: easily punished those who doubted his authority, but that wasn't
- 8:51Speaker 3: David's way. It wasn't what was in his heart. David's
- 8:56Speaker 3: heart sought peace with those who opposed him. So he
- 8:59Speaker 3: spoke to the priests and generals who supported Absalom, easing
- 9:02Speaker 3: their concerns and assuring them that they would have a
- 9:05Speaker 3: place at the table. His wisdom and kindness paid off,
- 9:09Speaker 3: and David was able to return to Jerusalem, counting on
- 9:12Speaker 3: the support of those who had backed Absalom. There were others, though,
- 9:16Speaker 3: who had remained in Jerusalem, many of whom had sided
- 9:20Speaker 3: with Absalom, and with David back in the city, they
- 9:22Speaker 3: began to approach, begging for forgiveness. One of these men
- 9:27Speaker 3: was a man named Shammai, who had chosen to serve Absalom.
- 9:31Speaker 3: We hear his words to the king in 2 Samuel 19,
- 9:34Speaker 3: verse 19. Let not my Lord hold me guilty or
- 9:38Speaker 3: remember how your servant did wrong on the day my
- 9:40Speaker 3: Lord the king left Jerusalem. Do not let the king
- 9:44Speaker 3: take it to heart. Can you imagine the memories that
- 9:48Speaker 3: must have flooded David's mind as he heard these words?
- 9:51Speaker 3: For they sounded so much like the words that he
- 9:53Speaker 3: had cried out to God after sins of adultery and
- 9:56Speaker 3: murder came to light. Had not God forgiven him? how
- 10:00Speaker 3: then could he not show grace and forgiveness to someone
- 10:03Speaker 3: who responded with repentance towards him? Still, David's men urged
- 10:08Speaker 3: him to put to death the traitor, but David stood
- 10:11Speaker 3: firm and forgave this man. His quest for peace and
- 10:15Speaker 3: reconciliation continued. He understood what his son Solomon would one
- 10:19Speaker 3: day write in Ecclesiastes, that there is a time for everything,
- 10:24Speaker 3: a time to kill and a time to heal, a
- 10:26Speaker 3: time for war and a time for peace. This was
- 10:30Speaker 3: a time for peace and restoring peace, and David knew
- 10:33Speaker 3: the future of the nation depended upon it. Others came
- 10:37Speaker 3: to David, and he forgave them one after another, signaling
- 10:40Speaker 3: to the people that he would not be a vindictive king.
- 10:45Speaker 3: In this new era of his reign, David navigated disputes
- 10:48Speaker 3: on the home front rather than fighting battles with foreign foes,
- 10:52Speaker 3: and slowly the nation began to experience unity once again.
- 10:57Speaker 3: But not all were eager for peace. In Benjamin, there
- 11:00Speaker 3: was a man named Sheba who was sowing dissension, rallying
- 11:04Speaker 3: people to his side. The king understood that his opposition
- 11:07Speaker 3: posed a far greater danger than his son Absalom's ill-conceived coup.
- 11:13Speaker 3: David sent Joab, Abishai, and his other mighty men to
- 11:16Speaker 3: shut down the insurrection brewing in Benjamin. He also called
- 11:20Speaker 3: on Amasa, one of his generals who had served Absalom,
- 11:24Speaker 3: but had been pardoned by David, staying true to his
- 11:26Speaker 3: word that these men too would have a place in
- 11:28Speaker 3: the kingdom. But Amasa was treacherous and had it in
- 11:32Speaker 3: his heart to sabotage the king. Joab, however, saw right
- 11:36Speaker 3: through it and put Abisa to death. Still Sheba remained
- 11:40Speaker 3: and had to be dealt with swiftly. And we'll hear
- 11:43Speaker 3: more about that the next time. Dear God, we thank
- 11:48Speaker 3: you for forgiveness, your forgiveness of us, that when we
- 11:53Speaker 3: repent and turn from our sins, that we find complete
- 11:56Speaker 3: and total forgiveness because of what you have done for
- 11:59Speaker 3: us in sending Jesus to die on the cross for
- 12:02Speaker 3: our sins, to rise again, that we would have eternal life.
- 12:06Speaker 3: May we not only be forgiven, but offer forgiveness to others.
- 12:11Speaker 3: And may we live in the grace and the mercy
- 12:13Speaker 3: of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
- 12:22Speaker 3: And before we go, I wanted to let you know
