- 0:00Speaker 1: William Conrad leads the cast as Marshal Matt Dillon, with
- 0:04Speaker 1: Parley Bear, Georgia Ellis, Howard McNear, Vic Perrin, Richard Crenna,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and Virginia Christine. In Dodge City, a reputed hired killer
- 0:14Speaker 1: named Carl Killian arrives, but will not say who has
- 0:18Speaker 1: brought him there, or who may be in his sights.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Several townsmen begin to wonder whether they are the intended target,
- 0:25Speaker 1: while Dillon has no charge on which to hold Killian
- 0:29Speaker 1: and works to prevent the confrontation the gunman appears to
- 0:32Speaker 1: be seeking. From CBS Radio, written by Les Crutchfield and
- 0:37Speaker 1: directed by Norman MacDonald, this is Gunsmoke, Tag, You're It,
- 0:42Speaker 1: episode 339, originally broadcast October 5th, 1958. And now, our
- 0:50Speaker 1: story begins.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 1:04Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:09Speaker 2: gun smoke. Gun smoke. Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story
- 1:32Speaker 2: of the violence that moved west with young America. And
- 1:36Speaker 2: the story of a man who moved with it. I'm
- 1:39Speaker 2: that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal.
- 1:43Speaker 3: The first man they look for and the last they
- 1:45Speaker 3: want to meet.
- 1:47Speaker 4: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:51Speaker 4: And a little lonely.
- 2:05Speaker 3: A morning like this makes a man feel mighty perky, Mr. Dillon.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Yeah, it looks to be a nice day, Chester.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Sun shining, fine breeze starting up, and breakfast waiting right
- 2:15Speaker 3: down the seat there.
- 2:17Speaker 4: I wondered how long it'd be before you'd get around
- 2:19Speaker 4: to mentioning food.
- 2:20Speaker 5: Oh, I like to eat.
- 2:22Speaker 4: I know, Chester, I know.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Give you a knife and a fork and you turn
- 2:25Speaker 3: into a tiger.
- 2:26Speaker 5: Oh, no, it ain't that bad. Wait a minute, Chester. Well,
- 2:35Speaker 5: been a long time, Matthew.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Yeah, a long time, Carl.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Just rode into town five minutes ago and the first
- 2:42Speaker 3: man I run into is you. Well, I'm the first
- 2:45Speaker 3: one a lot of them run into. This is Chester Proudfoot,
- 2:48Speaker 3: Carl Killian.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Chester? Hi, Mr. Killian.
- 2:52Speaker 5: That a badge you're wearing, Matthew?
- 2:53Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I'm a U.S.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Marshal here in Dodge.
- 2:56Speaker 5: A lawman.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Well, who'd ever have thought it? Yeah. Well, it seems
- 3:02Speaker 4: we both sold our guns in different ways. I wouldn't
- 3:07Speaker 4: know about that. I.
- 3:09Speaker 5: I'm still a drifter, Matthew. Same as always.
- 3:12Speaker 4: So I've heard.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah, just a saddle bum here today, gone tomorrow. But
- 3:16Speaker 3: it's what happens between today and tomorrow.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Isn't it, Carl?
- 3:20Speaker 5: Nobody ever knows ahead of time.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Well, they pretty well do when you hit town the
- 3:24Speaker 3: way I've been hearing it.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Ah, you know how easy stories get started.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Gun for hire, $ 1, 000 a job, results guaranteed.
- 3:33Speaker 4: That's how the stories go, Carl.
- 3:35Speaker 5: When a fella ain't got a regular job, folks make.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Up things about him. You're a hired killer, Carl, and
- 3:41Speaker 4: we both know it.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Ain't you kind of a hired killer yourself, Matthew?
- 3:45Speaker 4: Who are you here for, Carl? Who are you figuring
- 3:49Speaker 4: to kill?
- 3:49Speaker 3: Well, now, if I was the kind of man them
- 3:52Speaker 3: stories say, you don't think I'd answer that, do you?
- 3:54Speaker 4: You're here for a killing. Nothing else would bring you
- 3:57Speaker 4: to Dodge, right?
- 3:59Speaker 5: You a lawman for real, Matthew.
- 4:01Speaker 3: or just a bronco in this town for your own benefit?
- 4:06Speaker 4: I'm a lawman. Funny.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Years back when we used to cut brush for strays.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Down on the Pecos.
- 4:14Speaker 3: we'd lay there at night in our bedrolls.
- 4:16Speaker 4: and look at the stars and talk.
- 4:18Speaker 3: But we never figured it'd turn out like this someday, Carl.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Why don't you get out of town while you still can?
- 4:25Speaker 5: No, I figured I'd look around a few days... See
- 4:28Speaker 5: what kind of place you got here.
- 4:30Speaker 3: I'll see you, Matthew.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Nice to meet you, Chester. So long.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Well, them is the coldest pair of eyes I ever
- 4:42Speaker 3: seen in man's head, Mr.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Dillon.
- 4:45Speaker 3: He got married the year after we worked together, Chester.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Some fence cutters burned his place one night. Killed his wife.
- 4:54Speaker 3: He run them down and shot them, all four of them.
- 4:58Speaker 3: And then he couldn't seem to stop after that.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Who do you reckon he's after?
- 5:04Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Well, it gives you the creeps not knowing when or who.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Forget it, Chester.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Come on, let's get some breakfast, huh? You go on ahead, Mr.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Dillon.
- 5:16Speaker 5: For some reason, I guess I just ain't hungry. No, sirree,
- 5:31Speaker 5: I do not understand this.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Well, we'll see what.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Matt? What's this friend of yours up to, anyhow?
- 5:41Speaker 4: Huh? Which friend, Doc?
- 5:43Speaker 5: Carl Killian, that's who.
- 5:46Speaker 4: He's not a friend. Been a long time since he was.
- 5:49Speaker 6: Why?
- 5:49Speaker 4: What's he been doing?
- 5:50Speaker 5: That's just it, nothing. He's not been doing one busted thing.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Well, then.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Not everybody in town.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Knows who he is and what he's here for. But
- 5:59Speaker 3: they don't know who the mark's on. Why, it's got
- 6:02Speaker 3: them so spooked they're ready to jump out of their
- 6:04Speaker 3: skins whenever a door closes. Well, I can't do much
- 6:07Speaker 3: about it, Doc, until he tips his hand some way.
- 6:09Speaker 3: He hasn't committed any crime in Dodge and he's not
- 6:11Speaker 3: wanted anywhere else.
- 6:13Speaker 5: And why isn't he wanted?
- 6:15Speaker 3: And he always managed to goad his victims into making
- 6:17Speaker 3: the first move, so it's self-defense.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Ahem.
- 6:21Speaker 3: You got any idea who he's after?
- 6:23Speaker 4: No.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Well, there's two dozen or more men around town who
- 6:27Speaker 3: think they're the one.
- 6:28Speaker 4: One of them may be right, Doc.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Killian stopped in front of Wilbur Jones' store window this morning,
- 6:33Speaker 3: stood looking in there for a while.
- 6:36Speaker 5: As soon as he left, Wilbur locked up and went home.
- 6:38Speaker 3: And he's been sitting home there in this parlor ever since,
- 6:41Speaker 3: with a shotgun across his knees.
- 6:42Speaker 4: I doubt he's after Wilbur.
- 6:44Speaker 5: But you don't know.
- 6:47Speaker 4: One of you men the marshal? Yeah, I am.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Come on in.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Marshal, there's a man here in Dodge that's fixing to
- 6:55Speaker 4: kill me. Oh? What's your name? Tex Bartow. This man
- 7:01Speaker 4: calls himself Carl Killian.
- 7:02Speaker 5: He's been hired to follow me here and do me in.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Well, half the town thinks that same thing, Tex.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Yeah, but I know.
- 7:09Speaker 5: I seen him in Pueblo two weeks ago, and now
- 7:11Speaker 5: he turns up here.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Pueblo, huh? I got in some trouble there, Marshal.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Not with law.
- 7:17Speaker 4: I was cleared.
- 7:18Speaker 5: But I killed a man in a fight, and his
- 7:19Speaker 5: friends swore they'd get me one.
- 7:21Speaker 6: Way or another.
- 7:21Speaker 4: How does Killian figure it out? He was there.
- 7:24Speaker 5: He's seen the fight. I didn't know who he was then,
- 7:26Speaker 5: but I remember his face all right.
- 7:27Speaker 3: And they hired him.
- 7:29Speaker 4: I know they have.
- 7:30Speaker 5: He ain't here just by accident. You might be right, man.
- 7:34Speaker 3: If Killian wasn't poor blow just before he came here,
- 7:37Speaker 3: that must be where he was hired.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Maybe. You've got to lock him up, Marshal. I can't
- 7:42Speaker 4: do that, Tex. I got no charge.
- 7:44Speaker 5: But if you don't, he'll kill me.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Run away wouldn't even help. He'd just follow me.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Keep clear of him, Tex. Don't let him push you
- 7:51Speaker 3: into drawing against him.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Where are you staying? Dodge House. All right, then go
- 7:58Speaker 4: on over there and stay there. And keep off the street, huh?
- 8:02Speaker 4: All right. In the meantime, I'll try to figure something out. Okay, Marshal.
- 8:08Speaker 4: So long.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Uh, if he's not the one, Matt, there's another possibility you, uh,
- 8:17Speaker 3: maybe haven't even thought of.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Uh, me, you mean? Yeah, I thought of it, Doc.
- 8:23Speaker 5: Would he take a.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Job like that?
- 8:25Speaker 5: Would you be in friends once? You think he'd really
- 8:28Speaker 5: do that?
- 8:30Speaker 4: Yeah, he'd do it.
- 8:46Speaker 6: Matt, if you don't run that man out of town,
- 8:48Speaker 6: I might as well close up here and take a vacation.
- 8:51Speaker 6: He's practically living here.
- 8:53Speaker 5: At the Long Branch.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Why not? You serve the best beer in town, Kitty.
- 8:57Speaker 2: He's about the only one I serve it to.
- 8:59Speaker 6: The minute he comes in, the rest of the boys
- 9:01Speaker 6: start edging toward the door.
- 9:03Speaker 4: You can't blame them.
- 9:04Speaker 3: It's pretty hard to relax with the executioner standing at
- 9:07Speaker 3: your elbow.
- 9:08Speaker 6: You'd never know. Looking at him.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Evening, Miss Kitty.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Matthew. Hello, Carl.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Well, how's the law business coming along, Matthew?
- 9:19Speaker 4: The town's been pretty quiet the last few days.
- 9:21Speaker 5: I noticed that.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Don't seem to be hardly any.
- 9:24Speaker 4: People around at all. Well, at least not close to
- 9:27Speaker 4: where you are.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Folks hadn't ought to feel that way.
- 9:31Speaker 5: I don't mean no harm to them.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Were you in Pueblo just before you came here, Carl?
- 9:37Speaker 5: I might have been.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Why?
- 9:39Speaker 3: Well, is that where you took on the job? I
- 9:42Speaker 3: reckon you believe all them stories, all right.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Just like everybody else.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Miss Kitty.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Yeah, Rusty?
- 9:50Speaker 5: Oh, good evening, Marshal.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Mr.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Killian.
- 9:51Speaker 5: Hello, Rusty.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Good evening, Miss Fennel. Excuse me for.
- 9:55Speaker 7: Butting in, Miss Kitty, but Melba and Becky wondered.
- 9:57Speaker 6: If they could have the rest of the night off.
- 9:59Speaker 4: I'm seeing there's no.
- 10:00Speaker 3: much business anyhow.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Sure.
- 10:02Speaker 5: Tell them to go ahead.
- 10:04Speaker 3: You see, Mr.
- 10:04Speaker 6: Killian, you're ruining my business.
- 10:07Speaker 3: I'll try to make up for it some right now
- 10:09Speaker 3: if Miss Fennel will do me the honor of having a.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Drink with me.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Why, sure.
- 10:13Speaker 4: I'd love to. Good.
- 10:14Speaker 3: See you later, Matthew.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Miss Kitty.
- 10:18Speaker 5: I'll give him credit on one thing, Matt.
- 10:20Speaker 4: The girls all like him.
- 10:22Speaker 5: They think he's fine.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Well, he was fine once.
- 10:25Speaker 6: He makes you jumpy, though. The way he moves around.
- 10:28Speaker 6: Not saying much, but always watching.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Well, it started some of the citizens thinking, all right.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Well, everybody's guilty of something, Matt.
- 10:38Speaker 6: I even catch myself wondering if I'm the one he's after.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Yeah, that's not likely, Kitty.
- 10:43Speaker 6: But even you're not sure.
- 10:46Speaker 4: No.
- 10:46Speaker 5: You see?
- 10:48Speaker 6: You know, I almost wish it had hurry up and
- 10:50Speaker 6: happened so we'd know, so we'd have it over with.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Well, I guess a lot of people feel that way,
- 10:54Speaker 3: but there's nothing they can do. Hey.
- 10:58Speaker 4: What is it, man? Text Bardo, that kid that came
- 11:00Speaker 4: to see me this afternoon.
- 11:02Speaker 6: He's got a gun.
- 11:03Speaker 5: All right, kid! Hold it, Bardo! He tried to shoot
- 11:12Speaker 5: killing in the back.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Tried is right. Bardo? Bardo?
- 11:27Speaker 5: You know, I think that boy was aiming to do
- 11:29Speaker 5: me some harm, Matthew.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Well, he's dead, Killian.
- 11:36Speaker 5: I didn't have much choice the way you commented.
- 11:39Speaker 4: You're on the clear.
- 11:40Speaker 3: It was self-defense. I saw it myself. Just another job
- 11:44Speaker 3: done according to order.
- 11:45Speaker 5: What are you talking about?
- 11:46Speaker 4: He was the one you were after, wasn't he?
- 11:48Speaker 5: I never saw that boy before in my life.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Never heard of him. Don't even know his name.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Oh, Matthew, if I really was after anybody, I still am.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Good evening, Mr.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Dillon. What are you doing back here, Chester? When I
- 12:19Speaker 3: gave you the night off, I didn't figure to see
- 12:21Speaker 3: you till morning.
- 12:22Speaker 5: I'm giving up.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Going to bed.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Can't have no fun at all in this town, as
- 12:27Speaker 3: long as that doggone old Killian's around. He has kind
- 12:30Speaker 3: of slowed down the nightlife.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Hasn't he?
- 12:32Speaker 5: He just ain't nobody out in no place, hardly.
- 12:35Speaker 3: And them that is, is so busy looking over their
- 12:37Speaker 3: shoulder and jumping sideways that a man can't get to
- 12:40Speaker 3: feeling easy no matter how hard he puts his mind
- 12:42Speaker 3: to it. It just seems a shame to waste all
- 12:45Speaker 3: that hair grease and that boiled shirt, though, Chester.
- 12:48Speaker 4: I figured you'd end up as the king.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Of the Long Branch. That's another thing.
- 12:53Speaker 3: You know that little old girl over at Long Branch
- 12:55Speaker 3: that I've.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Been kindly sweet-talking lately?
- 12:57Speaker 4: Rusty Fennell?
- 12:58Speaker 3: Yeah, well, now she can't see me for days. She
- 13:01Speaker 3: just keeps hanging around him all the time. That's not
- 13:04Speaker 3: smart to get serious over a dancehall girl anyway, Chester. Well, now,
- 13:08Speaker 3: Rusty ain't just a common dancehall girl, Mr.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Dunn.
- 13:11Speaker 5: She comes from a real good family.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Her papa and mama's dead, but she's got a rich
- 13:18Speaker 3: uncle that's a very important man, and his health ain't too.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Good neither the last couple years. So that's why you're
- 13:24Speaker 4: so interested in her. I thought it was true love, Chester. Yeah, well, now, Mr.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Dillon, I ain't one to always be thinking about money,
- 13:32Speaker 3: but it sure don't hurt none to know that the
- 13:34Speaker 3: only heirs is just her and her cousin in Pueblo.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Pueblo? That's where her uncle and her cousin live. What's
- 13:43Speaker 5: the matter, Mr.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Dillon? Chester, I think I'll drop over to the Long
- 13:50Speaker 3: Branch and have a talk with Rusty. Well, she ain't
- 13:54Speaker 3: there now. She left with that doll darn Killian.
- 13:57Speaker 6: Is that a room?
- 14:13Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Second door down the hall, the landlady said.
- 14:16Speaker 4: All right, Chester, you wait here by the stairway. I'll
- 14:18Speaker 4: see if she's come home. Yes, sir.
- 14:20Speaker 3: It'd be better if I talked to her alone.
- 14:22Speaker 4: All right, Mr.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Dillon.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Who is it?
- 14:34Speaker 3: Marshal Dillon, Rusty. I'd like to talk to you for
- 14:37Speaker 3: a minute.
- 14:39Speaker 5: Well, it's awful late, Marshal.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Well, it won't take long, eh? Pretty important. All right.
- 14:46Speaker 5: Just a second. What is it, Marshal?
- 14:55Speaker 4: Mind if I come in?
- 14:58Speaker 5: I guess it's all right.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 15:01Speaker 5: Please don't mind the room.
- 15:03Speaker 7: When a girl lives alone, she gets careless about throwing
- 15:06Speaker 7: things around.
- 15:07Speaker 4: That looks fine to me.
- 15:10Speaker 2: What is it, Marshal?
- 15:10Speaker 1: Is anything wrong?
- 15:12Speaker 4: No, not exactly, or at least not yet.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Rusty, I hear that you've been seeing quite a bit
- 15:20Speaker 3: of Carl Kelly in the.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Last couple of days.
- 15:24Speaker 5: Yes, I guess maybe I have.
- 15:26Speaker 4: I see. Well, I think he's nice.
- 15:29Speaker 5: I think people are wrong about him.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Rusty, how did you happen to meet him? Did he
- 15:33Speaker 3: make a point of trying to get acquainted with you?
- 15:37Speaker 7: Well, he came into the Long Branch a few times
- 15:40Speaker 7: and he talked to all the girls, but he, well,
- 15:44Speaker 7: he seemed to like me the best.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Can't we talk about something else, Marshal?
- 15:50Speaker 4: Killian's the reason I came here, Rusty.
- 15:53Speaker 7: Well, then, come on over by the window.
- 15:56Speaker 5: It's hot in here.
- 15:57Speaker 4: All right, sure. Here, let me open it for you. Thanks.
- 16:07Speaker 7: This is better, isn't it?
- 16:09Speaker 4: Yeah, that's fine. You've got a nice view of the
- 16:13Speaker 4: street from here.
- 16:15Speaker 7: That's one reason I took the room.
- 16:18Speaker 5: He's behind that screen in the corner.
- 16:19Speaker 3: That's quite a street. Always something going on down there,
- 16:22Speaker 3: any hour of the.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Day or night. Yeah, I guess that's right.
- 16:28Speaker 5: He didn't want to see you.
- 16:29Speaker 3: There's the night stage pulling in from Walnut Creek, Pueblo,
- 16:32Speaker 3: and Denver.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Rusty, your life's not worth ten cents, mine either. What?
- 16:39Speaker 4: I say, it looks like they're carrying a short load tonight.
- 16:41Speaker 4: I know him. He's got a gun on us right now.
- 16:43Speaker 4: You're the one he's here to kill.
- 16:45Speaker 5: I don't believe you.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Just take it easy. I'm going to jump his move.
- 16:48Speaker 4: It's the only thing I can do, and I just
- 16:49Speaker 4: stand still. Well, I was right. He did have his
- 17:03Speaker 4: gun in his hand. Why?
- 17:06Speaker 7: Why?
- 17:08Speaker 4: Why did they want to kill me?
- 17:10Speaker 3: Your cousin hired him. Your uncle died in Pueblo two
- 17:13Speaker 3: weeks ago. I checked my telegraph an hour ago. With
- 17:17Speaker 3: you dead, too, your cousin would get the whole estate.
