- 0:00Speaker 1: Craig Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker. We're with the
- 0:02Speaker 1: up till five o'clock. A reminder Texas Women's basketball tonight
- 0:06Speaker 1: on one O three point one FM, Austin's eighty station
- 0:09Speaker 1: as the Longhorns will be an action to Texas women
- 0:13Speaker 1: to host Southern University tonight at Moody Center, Texas, right
- 0:20Speaker 1: in that thick of the fight where they've had all
- 0:22Speaker 1: of these road games, had the three games in Florida
- 0:25Speaker 1: over the Thanksgiving weekend, won all three games. They're lost
- 0:28Speaker 1: at Notre Dame last Thursday, came back on flew home
- 0:34Speaker 1: and then on Sunday took care of James Madison and
- 0:40Speaker 1: then they have a home game to night against Southern
- 0:42Speaker 1: and then back on the road to play Richmond on
- 0:45Speaker 1: Sunday afternoon. We heard from Vick Schaeffer last hour. Sum up.
- 0:49Speaker 1: We're going to hear some more from the log Horns
- 0:51Speaker 1: head coach about what there the grind that they're going
- 0:54Speaker 1: through and then getting ready for this weekend with Southern
- 0:58Speaker 1: and then the trip to Richmond, and then they've got
- 1:01Speaker 1: one more challenging game before Christmas when they take on
- 1:04Speaker 1: South Dakota State, who is perennially ranked and a tough team,
- 1:08Speaker 1: So we'll do on that. When you were on the
- 1:09Speaker 1: trip with them to James Madison, did you I mean,
- 1:15Speaker 1: I would say judge them from the way they played
- 1:17Speaker 1: in the first half, they didn't look fatigued. You look
- 1:20Speaker 1: a little Maybe that that trip home kind of will
- 1:23Speaker 1: wear everybody download bit because you guys had to wait a while,
- 1:25Speaker 1: didn't you.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, well, well, even then in overtime against utter Damon
- 1:29Speaker 2: Fick Schaeffer said this that the girls were gassed. They
- 1:32Speaker 2: were gassed, and when you missed ten consecutive shots and overtime,
- 1:35Speaker 2: that tells you it's fatigue, especially because those were wide
- 1:38Speaker 2: open looks for Maddy Booker and Roy Harmon. So I
- 1:42Speaker 2: was interested in, you know, what will the level energy
- 1:44Speaker 2: be like in this game? And they look fine, They're fine,
- 1:48Speaker 2: Now how will it be You know, we return late
- 1:51Speaker 2: Sunday night, but you've had, you know, two days of
- 1:53Speaker 2: full rest, so we'll catch up to them the night
- 1:55Speaker 2: maybe against Richmond, but for the most part, like I thought,
- 1:59Speaker 2: they looked energized against James Madison.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And some of them had to navigate final exams and
- 2:04Speaker 1: get through all of that kind of stuff. As well.
- 2:07Speaker 1: But semester drawing to its close, all right, so we'll
- 2:09Speaker 1: hear from Vic coming up again, some more from him
- 2:12Speaker 1: coming up in the next segment. There was something that's
- 2:14Speaker 1: wanted to get to, you know what, all season long,
- 2:17Speaker 1: Throughout the course of the season, we have gone through
- 2:22Speaker 1: a lot of different machinations and incarnations of things related
- 2:27Speaker 1: to the College Football Playoff, weekly rankings, power rankings, projections,
- 2:35Speaker 1: all of those things week by week. We've done it
- 2:37Speaker 1: because we knew in this new expanded college football Playoff
- 2:41Speaker 1: era of twelve teams making it, there were going to
- 2:44Speaker 1: be a lot of nuances and a lot of differences.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And certainly that is the case, and none more so
- 2:49Speaker 1: talked about than the SMU versus Alabama. You know, who belonged,
- 2:55Speaker 1: who didn't belong, blah blah blah. And let me just
- 2:57Speaker 1: say this. People have heard me say that I am
- 3:01Speaker 1: a more is more guy. I think they should ex
- 3:04Speaker 1: expand the playoff. I know there's going to be some conversations.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Rich Clark, the executive director who was on with us
- 3:09Speaker 1: a few weeks ago, had said a little bit about this,
- 3:13Speaker 1: but he said more about it in the last couple
- 3:15Speaker 1: of days. Yes, they will look at the possibility of
- 3:18Speaker 1: expanding the fourteen teams next year or twenty six, I
- 3:22Speaker 1: think is what he was talking about. I think this
- 3:24Speaker 1: is two years going to be in the twelve team format.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Doesn't mean they wouldn't adjust or tweak some of the
- 3:31Speaker 1: criteria by which they judge the available teams, but they
- 3:36Speaker 1: could look at possibly expanding to fourteen. I think sixteen
- 3:40Speaker 1: would be a good number. I think they could go
- 3:41Speaker 1: to sixteen. There are those who say that every Division
- 3:44Speaker 1: one FBS conference champion should be allowed ast spot in
- 3:49Speaker 1: the field. Now that's going to go counter to the
- 3:51Speaker 1: people say no, you just take the twelve best teams period,
- 3:54Speaker 1: regardless of conference. But the NCAA Basketball Tournament is much
- 3:59Speaker 1: more a goat militarian and how they invite the I
- 4:02Speaker 1: think it's thirty four conference or thirty four at large
- 4:05Speaker 1: bits and thirty four conference champions. By the way, they're
- 4:07Speaker 1: looking at possibly expanding again to seventy two or seventy
- 4:10Speaker 1: six from sixty eight teams. And we'll have more on
- 4:14Speaker 1: that later. But the but anyway, the you know college
- 4:18Speaker 1: from if you did there there are ten now that
- 4:22Speaker 1: the well, the PAC twelve will be back, I guess extra.
- 4:24Speaker 1: So you could say there'd be eleven Division one FBS
- 4:28Speaker 1: conferences if you took all eleven conference champions even like
- 4:32Speaker 1: Marshall winning the Sun Belt, you know, was it Jacksonville
- 4:37Speaker 1: State winning Conference USA. Every Division one FBS conference championship
- 4:42Speaker 1: winner gets a bid, that would be eleven out of sixteen.
- 4:45Speaker 1: You'd still have room for five more at large is
- 4:47Speaker 1: if you did it that way. But that's not going
- 4:49Speaker 1: to please everybody one thing. That is. So we have
- 4:52Speaker 1: followed this trail throughout the course of the season and
- 4:57Speaker 1: the latest incarnation of things, and I would say that
- 5:01Speaker 1: the Services of the Athletic did a similar thing like this.
- 5:05Speaker 1: SI has done some stuff at ESPN ranked all fifty
- 5:10Speaker 1: two teams who have taken a part taken apart taken
- 5:16Speaker 1: who have taken part of the College Football Playoff, who
- 5:20Speaker 1: have played in the College Football Playoff. So like twenty
- 5:25Speaker 1: twenty three Texas is ranked in here, twenty twenty what
- 5:30Speaker 1: was it, twenty twenty two CCU is ranked in here.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Every team that ever played in the College Football Playoff
- 5:36Speaker 1: in the seven years is ranked here, all fifty two teams.
- 5:39Speaker 1: So I'm not going to run through all fifty two,
- 5:40Speaker 1: but I'm just going to highlight a couple for you,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and that includes this year's field, which I think is
- 5:48Speaker 1: kind of interesting. They're ranking them before they have him played,
- 5:52Speaker 1: because I can tell you right now, you know who
- 5:54Speaker 1: Number fifty two is Arizona State, this year's Arizona State League. Yeah,
- 5:59Speaker 1: they ranked fifty two.
- 6:01Speaker 2: You know, I've seen some people projecting them to beat
- 6:04Speaker 2: Texas in a quarter five.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Possible, it said. As late as week twelve, Arizona State's
- 6:09Speaker 1: playoff odds were two point nine percent, according to the
- 6:13Speaker 1: All State Playoff Predictor. But Kitty Dellingham Sun Devil's beat
- 6:15Speaker 1: three of the Big Twelve's four best teams is part
- 6:18Speaker 1: of a six game winning streak, charging into and capturing
- 6:22Speaker 1: the Big Twelve championship game. With running back Camp Scataboo
- 6:24Speaker 1: leading the way. The Sun Devils are physical and confident,
- 6:27Speaker 1: but they will be underdogs from here, so we'll see,
- 6:30Speaker 1: we'll see. So they've got them ranked fifty two. They
- 6:32Speaker 1: got this year's Boise State team ranked fifty first. Interesting,
- 6:37Speaker 1: then they have this year's Clemson team fiftieth. Number forty
- 6:42Speaker 1: nine is a twenty fifteen Michigan State team that lost
- 6:46Speaker 1: in the Cotton Bowl to Alabama when they got blown out.
- 6:49Speaker 1: There's a lot of Oklahoma teams that are toward the
- 6:51Speaker 1: back end of this. Number forty eight is twenty nineteen Oklahoma,
- 6:56Speaker 1: it's got blown out by LSU. SMU this year is
- 6:59Speaker 1: number four, forty seven. Scrolling on down the list, Indiana
- 7:05Speaker 1: this year is number forty three. Remember when Cincinnati got
- 7:08Speaker 1: in three years ago, they're number forty two. Oklahoma twenty
- 7:13Speaker 1: eighteen is forty one. Oklahoma twenty fifteen is number thirty nine.
- 7:21Speaker 1: So just rolling back through this and last year's Texas
- 7:26Speaker 1: team is number thirty three, team that lost to Washington.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Just ahead them in number thirty two is the TCU
- 7:33Speaker 1: team from twenty twenty two. They reached the National Championship.
- 7:36Speaker 1: They're in there for that. So number twenty nine is
- 7:39Speaker 1: the twenty seventeen OU team that had Baker Mayfield that
- 7:42Speaker 1: lost to Georgia and the Rose Bowl. This year's twenty
- 7:47Speaker 1: twenty four Texas team currently ranks twenty eighth twenty eight
- 7:52Speaker 1: all time. He said, the only thing we don't know
- 7:54Speaker 1: whether Texas can do is beat Georgia. Blah blah blah.
- 7:57Speaker 1: They're ohing too against the Bulldogs and then eleven and
- 7:59Speaker 1: zer against everyone else, and they've got both the best
- 8:01Speaker 1: linebacking court, overall pass defense and the CFP where when
- 8:04Speaker 1: there's a question mark it comes on the offensive side
- 8:07Speaker 1: of the ball. But in theory, a couple of weeks
- 8:09Speaker 1: off could make a big difference for both hobbled star
- 8:11Speaker 1: tackle Calvin Banks Junior and quarterback Quinn Yours. So anyway,
- 8:16Speaker 1: that's that's whereas the Washington team that beat Texas last
- 8:21Speaker 1: year and then lost to Michigan in the National Championship
- 8:23Speaker 1: is ranked twenty six. Obviously, it's going to be pretty
- 8:27Speaker 1: Alabama and SEC heavy as you get all the way
- 8:30Speaker 1: down toward the final. The number one team out of
- 8:33Speaker 1: this deal if one of them's number one and one
- 8:37Speaker 1: of them is number two. So I'm gonna give them
- 8:38Speaker 1: both to and you guess one of the ones is
- 8:41Speaker 1: LSU then one in twenty nineteen. The other one is
- 8:44Speaker 1: the twenty twenty Alabama team that went thirteen in oh
- 8:48Speaker 1: and beat Ohio State in the final. Which would you
- 8:50Speaker 1: guess would be number two? In which number one?
- 8:53Speaker 2: I would say Alabama one because of their defense, LSU two.
- 8:57Speaker 1: You're spot on, You're spot on, yep, talk about that
- 9:00Speaker 1: at the defense there it is so anyway, it was
- 9:02Speaker 1: some entertaining reading anyway to see what their thought was
- 9:07Speaker 1: on all level. All right, up next, we're gonna hear
- 9:10Speaker 1: more from long orange Head basketball coach Vick Schaeffer of
- 9:13Speaker 1: the Texas women's team. We'll hear that coming up when
- 9:15Speaker 1: we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone
- 9:17Speaker 1: of the iHeart Radio app.
