- [Host] Welcome to the A.E.O. Engine AI Search Show — the number one podcast for brands looking to get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. I'm your host, Aria Chen. Today we're talking about something that's been quietly rewriting the rules of search visibility: Reddit. Not as a traffic source, but as a training ground for large language models. To help us unpack this, I've got Marcus Reid with us. Marcus, you've been tracking this shift from inside the industry. What's your read? [Guest] Hey Aria, . Yeah, this is one of those things that feels like a backdoor into AI search. Every marketer I talk to is frustrated — they put out these beautiful, polished blog posts, optimize for every keyword in the book, and then they ask ChatGPT for a recommendation and it spits back some random Reddit thread from 2019. That moment stings. [Host] Right. And that's the exact feeling I want to start with. You spend weeks crafting a page that's perfect for Google, but the AI doesn't even look at it. Instead, it pulls from a conversation that has three upvotes and is nearly three years old. There's actually a name for this dynamic. It's part of what's being called A.E.O. — Answer Engine Optimization — and Reddit has become a primary signal source for the models. Marcus, you've seen the data on this. [Guest] Yeah. So, what's happening is that L.L.M.s are trained on massive swaths of the web, and Reddit is one of the few places where natural, conversational, peer-reviewed content lives at scale. Research from a company called NoGood showed that 80% of the Reddit posts cited by L.L.M.s have fewer than 20 upvotes and are on average 900 days old. The models aren't looking for virality — they're looking for topical clarity and specificity. That's a huge shift from how we've thought about S.E.O., where you need links and social proof. Here, a quiet but well-articulated post can become the canonical answer. [Host] So it's not about reach. It's about depth and trustworthiness. But here's the uncomfortable question — if Reddit conversations are shaping L.L.M. outputs, and those outputs then influence a million buying decisions, what happens if your brand isn't part of those conversations? You become invisible at the moment of consideration. [Guest] Exactly. And that's the part that makes me nervous. Because a lot of the chatter on Reddit about brands is organic, unfiltered, and sometimes negative. If your company isn't mentioned in those threads, the A.I. won't recommend you. But if the chatter is negative, the model mirrors that too. There's a real risk of a negative feedback loop. I've seen brands try to manipulate Reddit discussions, and it almost always backfires because the community sniffs it out. The authenticity requirement is higher than ever. [Host] So how does this actually work at a technical level? I keep seeing debates about things like llms.txt files, but the adoption seems spotty. [Guest] Yeah, llms.txt is a proposed standard to guide L.L.M. crawling — like a robots.txt for A.I. But in practice, server logs show that most websites get no hits on their llms.txt files at all. Google's official A.I. S.E.O. guide says you don't need one, while Google Chrome's Agentic Browsing audit checks for it. So there's conflicting signals. The consensus from the Reddit community — ironic as that is — is that focusing on organic Reddit content patterns is more impactful than over-investing in an opt-in file that nobody's reading yet. [Host] So the most effective signal is just being present and helpful in the forums where the models are already scraping. That feels almost too simple. But I'm still skeptical — is this really a new discipline, or is it just traditional S.E.O. with an A.I. label? I've seen comments on r/seogrowth arguing exactly that. [Guest] You're not wrong. A lot of the advice out there is repackaged content strategy. But there is something genuinely different: the metric of success. In traditional S.E.O., you care about traffic, backlinks, upvotes. In A.E.O., those don't matter. What matters is whether your brand name appears in a relevant, well-structured answer when someone asks a question. One practitioner I follow claimed they see 10 times faster traffic impact with A.E.O. optimized articles compared to traditional backlinking at the same time window. That's not nothing. [Host] That's a striking claim. But I want to push back a little — isn't there a danger that this whole Reddit-to-L.L.M. pipeline becomes its own hype cycle? I mean, if everyone starts optimizing Reddit posts, won't the models learn to discount them? [Guest] Possibly. I actually don't know if this holds in six months. The models are being updated constantly, and they could change how they weight sources. But right now, Reddit is a durable, long-term asset for A.E.O. because it's community-first and culturally specific. L.L.M.s reward that nuance over generic content. It's like what I tell my clients: don't think of Reddit as a place to get link juice. Think of it as a place to build a canon answer that the A.I. will recite for years. There's a reason old threads with almost no engagement still get cited — they're the cheapest version of truth for the model. [Host] That's a sobering image — your brand's reputation being reduced to a 900-day-old post with three upvotes. But it's also an opportunity. At A.E.O. Engine, we've been building systems that help brands occupy that answer space — not by manipulating Reddit, but by creating clear, authoritative, structured content that feeds both traditional search and L.L.M. answers. Our agentic S.E.O. approach essentially automates the creation of answer-shaped content across multiple platforms, including the places models trust most. The goal is to make sure that when someone asks for a recommendation, the model has a well-formed version of your brand to pull from, not just a random thread. [Guest] And that's the key — you have to participate honestly. The companies that get this right are the ones that treat Reddit as a listening channel first, then a contribution channel. I've seen brands like Morph Costumes — one of A.E.O. Engine's clients — use that strategy to shift their narrative in AI answers. They didn't just post ads; they answered real questions from real customers. Over time, those answers became citations. [Host] Exactly. It's not about gaming the system. It's about being the authority that the system naturally leans on. So let's wrap this up for our listeners. If you have a brand and you want to be visible in AI search, the playbook is simple but not easy: listen to what people are asking on Reddit, answer those questions better than anyone else, and do it consistently. That's how you become the answer instead of just another link. And if you want help building that system at scale — head to A.E.O. Engine dot A.I. We'll get you started. Marcus, thanks for the real talk. [Guest] Anytime, Aria. And hey, if this all changes next quarter, we'll come back and laugh about it. That's the game. [Host] That's all for today. Remember: AI search is not a shortcut. It's a multiplier of existing quality or existing debt. Make sure your source of truth is clear. We'll be back tomorrow with another episode. Until then, stay visible.
