- 0:00Speaker 1: But like football Friday Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five,
- 0:03Speaker 1: but like the official beer sponsor of the Denver Broncos,
- 0:06Speaker 1: remember to enjoy responsibly. Friday afternoon means we talked to
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald here on the Correctman and Lyndahl Show. Jeff Legwald,
- 0:15Speaker 1: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:18Speaker 1: IBW Local sixty eight. Start with the job and with
- 0:21Speaker 1: a career. The rare occasion where it's a Friday and
- 0:25Speaker 1: yet we will still have yet another discussion with Jeff
- 0:28Speaker 1: Legwald before the Broncos kick off. That's the fun of
- 0:31Speaker 1: Monday night football. We'll talk to Leggy coming up here
- 0:33Speaker 1: on Monday. But right now, let's talk about the latest
- 0:36Speaker 1: with the team and Leggie, I would say the legs
- 0:38Speaker 1: with the team is taking a look at this injury
- 0:40Speaker 1: report right now. Everybody was a full go today at practice.
- 0:45Speaker 1: So despite the dra Greenlaw absence, which kind of continues
- 0:49Speaker 1: to hover over this team, the Broncos in the very
- 0:52Speaker 1: least going into Week four, are in a good injury position.
- 0:56Speaker 1: The question is Evan Ingram, how much is he gonna
- 1:00Speaker 1: to see the ball on Monday.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Well, I think that's what they've really been missing Nate,
- 1:05Speaker 2: and I think it's been painful, painfully evident, and even
- 1:10Speaker 2: in the games he's left early. And you know Indianapolis,
- 1:13Speaker 2: he was clearly clearly compromised with the back injury during
- 1:17Speaker 2: the game. So they need him. And you know again
- 1:22Speaker 2: that this week he's he's looked good on the practice field.
- 1:26Speaker 2: You know, again, nobody's tackling you out there, but he
- 1:30Speaker 2: was moving well and he looked like he did in
- 1:33Speaker 2: terms of movement, uh, like he did in camp. So uh,
- 1:38Speaker 2: that's somebody they sorely need. They are not challenging defenses
- 1:42Speaker 2: at all in the intermediate area of the field, and
- 1:46Speaker 2: people know it, and uh, they're not going to change
- 1:50Speaker 2: their habits until the Broncos, you know, sort of forced
- 1:53Speaker 2: them to.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Yeah, like you to that point, and you wrote about
- 1:56Speaker 1: it today on ESPN dot com. Like, there's the metrics
- 1:59Speaker 1: that are bad. They stink on third down, bone Knicks
- 2:02Speaker 1: twenty fifth and QBR. We see all of that. The
- 2:06Speaker 1: numbers clearly aren't good. But what is striking you right
- 2:09Speaker 1: now or what is standing out to you as you
- 2:12Speaker 1: have watched these games on film and looked at the
- 2:14Speaker 1: charts about where bone Knicks is throwing the ball right now.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Well, I mean, defenses want him to push it wide,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and he has been forced that way a lot on
- 2:26Speaker 2: key downs, especially so that the it's a rare or
- 2:32Speaker 2: you know, rareer. But defenses are sort of dictating to
- 2:35Speaker 2: the Broncos at times, especially I think on pivotal h
- 2:40Speaker 2: third down plays and red zone and you know, teams
- 2:45Speaker 2: have at least two of the Broncos opponents have really
- 2:49Speaker 2: chosen to sort of gang up on Courtland Sutton. And
- 2:53Speaker 2: you know, with with mixed success, they you know, they've
- 2:56Speaker 2: still gotten the ball to Sudden, especially in the Chargers game,
- 3:00Speaker 2: even though he was clearly their they're number one target
- 3:05Speaker 2: on defense. But you know, teams are pushing Nicks outside
- 3:10Speaker 2: the numbers. That's where a lot of the mistakes have come.
- 3:13Speaker 2: And the intermediate field part of the field is where
- 3:18Speaker 2: the Broncos and Knicks really made it happen last year,
- 3:22Speaker 2: you know. And and and they're not allowing that. I
- 3:25Speaker 2: mean they and the Broncos haven't run the ball well
- 3:28Speaker 2: enough to sort of dig the safety out of those
- 3:33Speaker 2: situations or at least make defenses commit to other things. Uh,
- 3:39Speaker 2: they're they're getting away playing light boxes against the the
- 3:44Speaker 2: Broncos in the run game and and in the passion game,
- 3:46Speaker 2: they're forcing the ball where they want it to go
- 3:49Speaker 2: instead of where the Broncos wanted to go.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Leg I think I'm gonna save a lot of my
- 3:53Speaker 3: Cincinnati specific questions for Monday from when we talk to you,
- 3:57Speaker 3: but I want to ask you. Obviously a lot's been
- 3:59Speaker 3: made for good reason, because it's crazy how different the
- 4:02Speaker 3: numbers are. But a lot's been made over Sean Payton's
- 4:06Speaker 3: record in September compared to October. Now, you and I
- 4:10Speaker 3: have joked, and we've joked about it on the air
- 4:12Speaker 3: off to everything about the gigantic play sheet that he
- 4:15Speaker 3: brings in. It seems every game does he pare down
- 4:18Speaker 3: those plays? What do you think is the secret? What
- 4:20Speaker 3: is the reason that he's so much better in October
- 4:23Speaker 3: in his career than he is in September.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Well, my initial thought, Andy is that he asks a
- 4:29Speaker 2: lot of a defense. You know, they're heavy personnel shifting,
- 4:34Speaker 2: you know, three and four players moving on and off
- 4:37Speaker 2: the field after almost every play, a big volume of plays.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I think his offenses, even when Drew Brees in his
- 4:46Speaker 2: tenth eleventh year in the offense, I think they need
- 4:50Speaker 2: a few weeks. You know, in the preseason, people don't
- 4:53Speaker 2: play as much as they used to nearly, and it's
- 4:56Speaker 2: almost like a preseason extension for him, and I I
- 5:00Speaker 2: think if we go back and dive in to a
- 5:03Speaker 2: lot of those numbers, we will probably see at least
- 5:07Speaker 2: some sluggishness on offense and a lot of talk about,
- 5:12Speaker 2: you know, where are the big plays and that type
- 5:15Speaker 2: of thing. So I think it may just take a
- 5:18Speaker 2: minute for all he wants to do on offense to
- 5:21Speaker 2: get going. And he sort of keeps alluding to that,
- 5:26Speaker 2: you know, over the last couple of weeks that I
- 5:28Speaker 2: essentially asked him yesterday, you know, you do you have
- 5:33Speaker 2: an identity or do you have a section of plays
- 5:36Speaker 2: you think you can lean on right now? And he
- 5:39Speaker 2: basically said no. And you know, I think that's very
- 5:44Speaker 2: telling that he even will admit publicly they don't have
- 5:48Speaker 2: an offensive identity right now. And he is the play
- 5:51Speaker 2: caller and the head coach that you know that all
- 5:54Speaker 2: roads lead to him in that regard. But I think
- 5:58Speaker 2: he at least has records. It is an issue right now.
- 6:03Speaker 1: So five touches for R. J. Harvey, twelve touches for JK.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Dobbins last week, Jeff, like you talked about in the
- 6:11Speaker 1: struggle to find an identity for this offense, when are
- 6:17Speaker 1: we going to start to see it emerge from the
- 6:19Speaker 1: backs from the run game. And really, I mean we've
- 6:22Speaker 1: talked about the lack of a run game. They also
- 6:24Speaker 1: they've not exactly crushed it throwing the ball to the
- 6:27Speaker 1: backs so far this season either, Leggie. Right now, where
- 6:32Speaker 1: are they at in that progression?
- 6:34Speaker 2: You know, Nate, I think all the sort of the
- 6:38Speaker 2: offseason acquisitions. You know, they signed Dobbinson free agency in June,
- 6:44Speaker 2: you know, Harvey, they trade up for to taking the draft.
- 6:47Speaker 2: They signed ingram to the biggest free agent signing on offense,
- 6:52Speaker 2: and none of those things are really incorporated in the
- 6:56Speaker 2: offense yet. So you went through all this trouble to
- 7:00Speaker 2: make these additions, and they have not been smoothly added,
- 7:06Speaker 2: you know, And it maybe just because I'm old, but
- 7:09Speaker 2: I really struggle, just as you know, being there to
- 7:15Speaker 2: chart and observe and report and all the rest of it.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I really struggle to watch them have a three play
- 7:22Speaker 2: scoring drive with three impactful run plays and then it's like, okay,
- 7:28Speaker 2: that's you know, they're not perishable you can use them again.
- 7:33Speaker 2: You know, you can bring those plays back in the game.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And it's still very difficult for me to watch them
- 7:41Speaker 2: do something like that and never come back to it
- 7:44Speaker 2: the rest of the day. And it was obviously clearly
- 7:48Speaker 2: something they had that worked against the Chargers defense. And
- 7:55Speaker 2: you know, I think until they figure out where you know,
- 7:58Speaker 2: they're they're doing play action more than they have in
- 8:02Speaker 2: Sean Payton's past. So that element is there. But I
- 8:06Speaker 2: think Knicks probably should or or could go under center more.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And I think that the run game will get their
- 8:15Speaker 2: past game going. I don't think they can live right
- 8:18Speaker 2: now in the modern NFL, which is you throw to
- 8:23Speaker 2: set up the run. Now, I think they have to
- 8:25Speaker 2: sort of go back the old way to get the
- 8:28Speaker 2: quarterback calm down a little bit.
- 8:32Speaker 3: All right, Jeff, I want to ask you about Riley Moss.
- 8:35Speaker 3: What kind of year do you think he's having. You know, again,
- 8:38Speaker 3: when you're the guy that's always in the highlight, that's
- 8:40Speaker 3: giving up the reception, fans are gonna get frustrated with you,
- 8:44Speaker 3: But it feels like he's in the right place an
- 8:46Speaker 3: awful lot of time. How would you how would you
- 8:49Speaker 3: describe his season so far.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I think he's having a pretty good year, and I
- 8:54Speaker 2: know people are going to beef about that, but I
- 8:57Speaker 2: find corner is a lot like a tackle on offense.
- 9:01Speaker 2: You could have fifty good plays and two bad ones
- 9:06Speaker 2: and everyone's gonna say you had a bad game, Whereas
- 9:10Speaker 2: if you're an edge rusher and you have forty five
- 9:14Speaker 2: block plays but you have a sack, everybody's gonna say
- 9:17Speaker 2: you had a pretty good day. So I think overall,
- 9:22Speaker 2: I think he competes. I think he's athletic. I think
- 9:25Speaker 2: he's tough. I think he tackles well, but he's gonna
- 9:30Speaker 2: get picked on because your choices are all bad when
- 9:33Speaker 2: you face the Broncos defense and it's running well. But
- 9:38Speaker 2: I think a lot of his completions have been very good,
- 9:42Speaker 2: tight window throws by quarterbacks. You know, if you sure
- 9:47Speaker 2: you're gonna get beat, it's just the way it is
- 9:51Speaker 2: if you're going to play opposite a Sir Tam. But
- 9:54Speaker 2: I think he has the right mentality, and I think
- 9:56Speaker 2: he's done far more right than mistakes. And that's all
- 10:02Speaker 2: you're gonna get, or that's really what you got to
- 10:05Speaker 2: shoot for at that other corner spot. Because I got
- 10:09Speaker 2: news for you, there will be very few guys below
- 10:13Speaker 2: Pro Bowl level or all Pro level that are going
- 10:17Speaker 2: to survive with that kind of competition or attention from quarterbacks.
- 10:22Speaker 2: And he's got the mentality to do it. I think
- 10:24Speaker 2: it's important.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yehs, the dirt man. I think he's having a good year,
- 10:28Speaker 1: Leggie Like honestly, I think the secondary has played really well.
- 10:31Speaker 1: The pass rush has been fantastic. I know the linebackers
- 10:34Speaker 1: have taken a ton of guff and maybe this is
- 10:36Speaker 1: a bigger picture question, but Jeff, right now, how are
- 10:39Speaker 1: you grading this defense out at stopping the run? Is
- 10:42Speaker 1: this a good run defense right now?
- 10:45Speaker 2: I think they've been just okay. You know, the Taylor,
- 10:49Speaker 2: the big Taylor pop, you know, skew some of the
- 10:52Speaker 2: numbers a little bit, but they're still missing tackles. I
- 10:57Speaker 2: think a defense that can be as good as this
- 11:01Speaker 2: one should not miss tackles like they do sometimes. And
- 11:06Speaker 2: sometimes that's the September thing and it gets better, or
- 11:10Speaker 2: sometimes that's just the defense's you know, Achilles heel. So
- 11:14Speaker 2: we don't know the answer to that yet, but I
- 11:18Speaker 2: think they will settle down a little better when they
- 11:21Speaker 2: tackle more or tackle more efficiently in the run game especially,
- 11:27Speaker 2: and I think occasionally they get turned up front a
- 11:29Speaker 2: little bit because they're so aggressive in attacking the line
- 11:33Speaker 2: of scrimmage that occasionally somebody's going to hit you in
- 11:37Speaker 2: the right gap, and I think they've had some of that.
- 11:41Speaker 2: But they're a really funky defense to look at analytically
- 11:46Speaker 2: because they they sack people like crazy. Yeah. There, you know,
- 11:51Speaker 2: they're heavy analytics numbers. Their efficiency numbers are still top
- 11:55Speaker 2: ten in the league, and they've given up two three
- 11:59Speaker 2: hundred yard passing so it's really an odd, odd mix.
- 12:03Speaker 2: And some of that, you know, is big plays and
- 12:06Speaker 2: those will stew the raw numbers sometimes but they still count.
- 12:11Speaker 2: But they're rushing the pass or at an elite level.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I think the last two games are what six sacks
- 12:16Speaker 2: and twenty quarterback hits. I mean, that's that's getting after it.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's two quarterbacks that just played really well
- 12:24Speaker 1: facing a lot of daunting pressure against Denver. I don't
- 12:28Speaker 1: know if Jake Browning can replicate that. On Monday. We'll
- 12:31Speaker 1: talk to Jeff Legwald again on Monday afternoon ahead of
- 12:33Speaker 1: Monday Night Football. Mister ESBN himself, Jeff Legwald. Everybody read
- 12:38Speaker 1: his stuff at ESPN dot com. It is the best.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Thanks Leggy, Thanks Fellas.
- 12:43Speaker 2: We'll see it
