- 4:27Speaker 5: we send it back to the pits of hell from
- 4:30Speaker 5: which it came. God send those who need to listen
- 4:34Speaker 5: on tonight. In the precious name of Jesus, I do
- 4:38Speaker 5: pray and I quote for this week a man.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Is the most beautiful people I've.
- 4:49Speaker 5: Known are those who have known trials, have known struggles,
- 4:55Speaker 5: have known loss, and have found their way out of depths.
- 5:00Speaker 4: And this is by Elizabeth Ross.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Tonight, we're going to be talking about the fourth stage
- 5:11Speaker 5: of grief, depression, when the pain becomes heavy, Understanding depression
- 5:20Speaker 5: and grief, recognizing when you are stuck, and discovering part
- 5:27Speaker 5: practical tools for moving forward. When we hear the word depression,
- 5:36Speaker 5: we immediately think about a mental health diagnosis, but grief
- 5:42Speaker 5: related depression can describe the deep sadness, emptiness, loneliness, exhaustion,
- 5:52Speaker 5: and heaviness that can come when we realize that what
- 5:57Speaker 5: we lost is not coming back. Grief can make you
- 6:02Speaker 5: feel as though the world has continued moving while your
- 6:07Speaker 5: world has suddenly stopped. You may wake up one morning
- 6:12Speaker 5: and think, how am I supposed to do this without them?
- 6:18Speaker 5: How can I live without him? I remember when I
- 6:24Speaker 5: was going through my stage of depression. I was wondering
- 6:28Speaker 5: how I was gonna make it through, how I was
- 6:31Speaker 5: going to continue living when my reason for living was gone.
- 6:40Speaker 5: I went through my daily routines, but everything felt different. Oh,
- 6:46Speaker 5: I was smiling around people, but inside I was hurting
- 6:52Speaker 5: and slowly dying. And sometimes you may not even have
- 6:58Speaker 5: the words to explain what you're feeling. If that sounds familiar,
- 7:06Speaker 5: I want you to know something today. You are not
- 7:10Speaker 5: weak because you are grieving. You are human court desting.
- 7:18Speaker 5: Today we're gonna talk about what happens during this stage,
- 7:24Speaker 5: why depression can become so heavy, what happens when we
- 7:29Speaker 5: get stuck, and some practical tools that can help us
- 7:35Speaker 5: begin taking steps forward. What is the depression stage of grief?
- 7:44Speaker 5: The fourth stage is often described as depression. This is
- 7:50Speaker 5: a stage where the reality of the loss may become
- 7:56Speaker 5: particularly heavy. Doing denial, we may think this can't be happening.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Doing anger, we may ask why did this happen? Doing pargaining,
- 8:11Speaker 5: we may think if only I could change something, and
- 8:16Speaker 5: those are the first three stages agreed. But in the
- 8:20Speaker 5: fourth stage, our depression can bring us face to face
- 8:27Speaker 5: with the reality this really happened and my life has changed.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Disrealization may be painful.
- 8:38Speaker 5: You may experience sadness, loneliness, crying, fatigue, loss of motivation,
- 8:48Speaker 5: difficultly concentrating, changes in your sleep pattern, changes in your appetitude,
- 8:55Speaker 5: your appetite, rejoyal from others, difficultly enjoy things you once enjoyed,
- 9:03Speaker 5: feelings of emptiness, and my stage of depression because in
- 9:12Speaker 5: my circle everyone had one child. All my friends all
- 9:18Speaker 5: had one child, and we would do everything together.
- 9:24Speaker 4: So when.
- 9:30Speaker 5: My son passed away and their children were still living,
- 9:35Speaker 5: and they were still going to graduation parties and weddings
- 9:39Speaker 5: and baby showers, I felt like I was.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Left out of the group.
- 9:46Speaker 5: I found myself saying, I don't feel like myself anymore.
- 9:52Speaker 5: I don't want to be around anybody. I just don't
- 9:56Speaker 5: have the energy to do anything. What's the point? Grief
- 10:03Speaker 5: can affect not only our emotions, but also our bodies, relationships, routines, faith,
- 10:13Speaker 5: and outlook on the future. And here is something important.
- 10:19Speaker 5: There is no timeline for grief. Grief does not have
- 10:25Speaker 5: an expiration date. Your grief does not have to look
- 10:30Speaker 5: like somebody else's grief. You don't have to be okay
- 10:35Speaker 5: because someone else thinks, excuse me, someone else thinks you
- 10:41Speaker 5: should be okay. You don't have to stop loving someone
- 10:47Speaker 5: in order to begin healing. And healing doesn't mean forgiving forgetting.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Healing means learning how to carry the loss while continue
- 10:59Speaker 5: into life. When grief becomes lonely, one of the most
- 11:07Speaker 5: difficult parts of depression and grief can be loneliness. You
- 11:12Speaker 5: can be surrounded by people and still fill completely alone.
- 11:18Speaker 5: People may stop calling, friends may not know what to say,
- 11:24Speaker 5: family routine members may return to their normal routine. Work continues,
- 11:31Speaker 5: Bills continues, birthday comes, holiday comes, anniversary comes, and you
- 11:38Speaker 5: may be thinking, how can everyone else continue as if
- 11:43Speaker 5: nothing happened.
- 11:45Speaker 4: But here is the truth the world.
- 11:49Speaker 5: Continuing does not mean your loss doesn't matter. Your pain matters,
- 11:57Speaker 5: your story matters, your memories matter, in your healing matters.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Sometimes people become uncomfortable with grief because they want to
- 12:10Speaker 5: fix it. They may say, be strong. Everything happens for
- 12:16Speaker 5: a reason. You need to move on. Time heals or wounds.
- 12:24Speaker 5: And I used to believe that. As I used to
- 12:29Speaker 5: minister to people, I would tell them that time heals
- 12:35Speaker 5: or wounds, but the loss of someone is a wound
- 12:43Speaker 5: that never goes away. Although these statements may be well intentioned,
- 12:51Speaker 5: sometimes when agreement person needs most is not an answer.
- 12:57Speaker 5: They do not need a motivation speaker. They need someone
- 13:03Speaker 5: who will sit with them, someone who will listen, someone
- 13:09Speaker 5: who will say, I don't have to understand everything you're feeling,
- 13:15Speaker 5: but I'm here with you.
- 13:18Speaker 4: This is powerful.
- 13:20Speaker 5: If you are supporting someone through grief, don't always try
- 13:24Speaker 5: to make them feel better. And the reality is in
- 13:30Speaker 5: the moment, you can't make them feel better. Nothing you
- 13:34Speaker 5: could say could bring their loved one back, and that's
- 13:38Speaker 5: what they want at the moment. But sometimes your mere
- 13:44Speaker 5: presence is the gift. What happens when we get stuck hmm,
- 13:51Speaker 5: Now let's talk about something important. What happens when we
- 13:56Speaker 5: become stuck in the press the pressure stage. There's a
- 14:01Speaker 5: difference between experienced deep sadness as part of the grief
- 14:07Speaker 5: and remaining overwhelmed by it to the point that we
- 14:11Speaker 5: cannot function or began to reconnect with life. When grief
- 14:17Speaker 5: remains extremely intense or persistent, it may be important to
- 14:23Speaker 5: seek professional health. And I know, I know being in
- 14:29Speaker 5: the African American community and the African American church, sometimes
- 14:36Speaker 5: mental health is taboo. But I'm here to tell you
- 14:41Speaker 5: on tonight that it is okay not to be okay,
- 14:47Speaker 5: because when grief remains extremely intense, getting stuck may look
- 14:53Speaker 5: like completely isolating yourself, refusing or support, losing interest in
- 15:02Speaker 5: everything for a prolonged period of time, neglecting basic needs
- 15:09Speaker 5: such as bathing and eating, being able to perform daily responsibilities,
- 15:17Speaker 5: feeling hopeless, believing that life no longer has a meaning,
- 15:25Speaker 5: being overwhelmed by gear, guilt if only I had, feeling
- 15:32Speaker 5: that there.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Is no future.
- 15:36Speaker 5: If these experiences are severe, persistent, or interference significantly with
- 15:43Speaker 5: daily function, reaching out to a qualified mental health professional
- 15:50Speaker 5: can be an important part of feeling.
- 15:53Speaker 4: There is no.
- 15:54Speaker 5: Shame in asking for help. Let me repeat that for
- 16:00Speaker 5: the ones in the back, there is no shame in
- 16:04Speaker 5: asking for help. Sometimes we think strength strength means handling
- 16:12Speaker 5: everything alone, but sometimes strength is saying I need somebody
- 16:20Speaker 5: to walk with me through this. A grief coach, counselor
- 16:26Speaker 5: therapist past the support group, trust a friend or another
- 16:32Speaker 5: qualified professional. Maybe become a part of your support system.
- 16:39Speaker 5: You do not have to walk this road alone. The
- 16:45Speaker 5: danger of isolation. One of the greatest dangers during this
- 16:51Speaker 5: stage is isolation. When we are hurting me, we may
- 16:56Speaker 5: want to shed everyone out. We may stop answering the phone.
- 17:02Speaker 5: We may stop attending church, we may stop participating in activities.
- 17:09Speaker 5: We may even stop returning messages. We may tell ourselves
- 17:15Speaker 5: nobody understands, and sometimes it feels easier to be alone.
- 17:23Speaker 5: But for long, isolation can make grief feel even heavier.
- 17:29Speaker 5: So here's a challenge. Don't disappear completely. You don't have
- 17:35Speaker 5: to attend every event. You don't have to pretend you're okay,
- 17:41Speaker 5: but choose one safe person. Call them, text them, sit
- 17:47Speaker 5: with them. Tell them I'm having a difficult day. I
- 17:52Speaker 5: don't need you to fix it. I just need you
- 17:56Speaker 5: to listen. And do you know that after sixteen years,
- 18:04Speaker 5: I still have difficult days. When I say it's feeling
- 18:10Speaker 5: heavy today, it's heavy on my mind. I just need
- 18:15Speaker 5: someone to talk to, to share memories of him with.
- 18:20Speaker 5: You don't have to fix it, and don't feel sorry
- 18:23Speaker 5: for me, but I just need you to listen That
- 18:29Speaker 5: one sentence can open the door to connection. I'm gonna
- 18:36Speaker 5: share with you five tools for moving through the depression stage.
- 18:44Speaker 5: Number one, name what you feel. Don't simply say I'm
- 18:52Speaker 5: having a bad day at yourself. What am I actually feeling?
- 18:58Speaker 5: Am I sad? Am I lonely? Am I angry? Am
- 19:04Speaker 5: I afraid? Am I guilty? Am I exhausted? Am I overwhelmed?
- 19:12Speaker 5: Am I disappointed? Write your feelings down. Writing your feelings
- 19:19Speaker 5: down can help you recognize what is happening inside of you.
- 19:26Speaker 5: Try this sentence today, I feel sad because I am
- 19:32Speaker 5: missing my son. You don't have to judge the feeling,
- 19:37Speaker 5: just name it. Number two, Create and create a small
- 19:43Speaker 5: daily routine. When you are grieving, enormous goals can feel impossible,
- 19:49Speaker 5: so don't focus on doing everything. Focus on doing one
- 19:56Speaker 5: small thing at a time. Get out of bed, take
- 20:01Speaker 5: a shower, drink some water, eat something nourishing, open the curtains,
- 20:10Speaker 5: take a walk, make one phone call, go outside for
- 20:15Speaker 5: a few minutes. Small steps count. Healing doesn't always look
- 20:22Speaker 5: like a giant breakthrough. Sometimes healing looks like today, I
- 20:28Speaker 5: got out of bed and that's enough for today. Three
- 20:35Speaker 5: stay connected. Choose at least one person you trust. Let
- 20:40Speaker 5: them know where you are emotionally. You might say, I'm
- 20:46Speaker 5: still struggling and I need someone to check on me.
- 20:50Speaker 5: Don't be afraid to ask for specific help. Instead of
- 20:55Speaker 5: saying I need help, you might say, can you call
- 21:00Speaker 5: me tomorrow? Can you sit with me for an hour?
- 21:06Speaker 5: Can you go to church with me? Can we take
- 21:10Speaker 5: a walk together. Specific requests make it easier for others
- 21:16Speaker 5: to support you. Number four, Create a safe place for
- 21:22Speaker 5: your memories. Sometimes people believe healing mean putting everything away,
- 21:29Speaker 5: but memories can be a part of healing. Create a
- 21:33Speaker 5: memory box, write letters, create a photo album, journal, listen
- 21:41Speaker 5: to meaningful music, talk about the person you lost, say
- 21:46Speaker 5: their name, tell their stories.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Cry when you need to.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Remembering someone does not mean you are refusing to heal.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Sometimes remembering is part of learning how to live with
- 22:02Speaker 5: the love that remains.
- 22:07Speaker 4: Five.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Give yourself permission to heal. This may be one of
- 22:13Speaker 5: the most important tools. Give yourself permission to heal. You
- 22:19Speaker 5: don't have to feel guilty because you laugh. You don't
- 22:24Speaker 5: have to feel guilty because you enjoyed yourself. You don't
- 22:29Speaker 5: have to feel guilty because you went somewhere without the person.
- 22:36Speaker 5: You don't have to feel guilty because you started dreaming again.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Healing is not portrayal. Moving forward does not mean moving
- 22:49Speaker 5: on from the person. It means moving forward with the memories,
- 22:56Speaker 5: the love, the lessons, and the legacy they left you
- 23:02Speaker 5: with the next small step. I want to give you
- 23:08Speaker 5: an exercise today. I call it the next small step.
- 23:14Speaker 5: Take a piece of paper and write, what is one
- 23:18Speaker 5: thing I can do today that supports my healing. Don't
- 23:24Speaker 5: write ten things, write one. Maybe it's I will take
- 23:29Speaker 5: a shower, or I will call my sister, or I
- 23:33Speaker 5: will take a walk, I will eat breakfast, I will
- 23:38Speaker 5: attend church, I will schedule appointment with a counselor I
- 23:44Speaker 5: will sit outside for ten minutes. I will journal, I
- 23:49Speaker 5: will allow myself to cry, not write who can support me?
- 23:55Speaker 5: And take in this step? Write down one person's name,
- 23:59Speaker 5: then right, what do I need from them? Finally, complete
- 24:05Speaker 5: this statement. I may be grieving, but I'm still here,
- 24:10Speaker 5: and because I am still here, there is still purpose
- 24:15Speaker 5: for my life. God has a purpose for our lives.
- 24:22Speaker 5: Read that statement out loud. I may be grieving, but
- 24:27Speaker 5: I am still here, and because I am still here,
- 24:32Speaker 5: there is still purpose for my life. As we close
- 24:39Speaker 5: this day's episode, I want you to remember this grief
- 24:44Speaker 5: is not a straight line. You may experience depression one
- 24:49Speaker 5: day and feel anger the next.
- 24:53Speaker 4: You might feel.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Hopeful in the morning and overwhelmed by the afternoon. You
- 25:00Speaker 5: may think you're doing better and suddenly find yourself crying
- 25:05Speaker 5: because a song, a smell, a photograph, a date, or
- 25:11Speaker 5: memory brings everything back. That doesn't mean you are going backwards.
- 25:18Speaker 5: It simply means you are grieving. Give yourself grace, and
- 25:24Speaker 5: please remember you don't have to heal well at once.
- 25:29Speaker 4: You only have to take the next step.
- 25:34Speaker 5: If today your next step is get out of bed,
- 25:38Speaker 5: that's a step. If your next step is asking for help,
- 25:43Speaker 5: that's a step. If your next step is allowing yourself
- 25:48Speaker 5: to cry, that's a step. If your next step is
- 25:53Speaker 5: believing that there can be still be a future you,
- 25:58Speaker 5: that's a step. And if you're struggling with persisting hopefulness,
- 26:04Speaker 5: severe depression, or thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out
- 26:09Speaker 5: to a qualified medical health professional or emergency support in
- 26:15Speaker 5: your every You deserve support and you don't have to
- 26:20Speaker 5: face that pain alone. I want to leave you with
- 26:23Speaker 5: this thought. Your loss might have changed your life, but
- 26:29Speaker 5: it does not have to destroy your future. There is
- 26:33Speaker 5: still life after loss, There is still pain purpose after pain.
- 26:41Speaker 5: There can still be joy after sorrow. We've been endures
- 26:49Speaker 5: for a day, but joy we've been endued for a night.
- 26:54Speaker 5: But joy is gonna come in the morning. There can
- 26:59Speaker 5: still be hope after heartbreak. Take it one day at
- 27:04Speaker 5: a time, and if one day it feels like too much,
- 27:09Speaker 5: make it an hour at a time. And if an
- 27:13Speaker 5: hour one hour feels like too much, take it one
- 27:17Speaker 5: moment at a time. Keep bereaving, keep believing, keep moving forward.
- 27:27Speaker 5: And the precious name of Jesus, hallelujah, Heavenly Father, and
- 27:33Speaker 5: the precious name of your son, Jesus, we come once again.
- 27:37Speaker 5: Thanking you for those that this podcast will touch, will
- 27:43Speaker 5: hell will deliver once again. Thanking you for the visionary
- 27:48Speaker 5: of this movement. Queen Angela and all the divas of
- 27:53Speaker 5: the Airways the Crew podcasts continue to bless them in
- 27:58Speaker 5: a special way. And if it's anybody who's on here
- 28:02Speaker 5: that do not know you and the parton of their sins, God,
- 28:06Speaker 5: you can be forgiven. On this evening, just say God,
- 28:13Speaker 5: I'm sorry for my sins. I repent, I recognize that
- 28:19Speaker 5: Jesus is your son, and that he died on the
- 28:22Speaker 5: cross for our sins so that our sins can be forgiven.
- 28:27Speaker 5: We can come to Jesus with our guilt, with our shame,
- 28:34Speaker 5: what our grief, with our lords, what I cry, and
- 28:39Speaker 5: with our heartbreak. And Jesus will not condemn you. He
- 28:45Speaker 5: will not make you feel guilty, but he will welcome
- 28:49Speaker 5: you with open arms. And if you know Jesus for yourself,
- 28:55Speaker 5: continue to lean on him. Can continue to look to
- 28:59Speaker 5: the hills from which cometh your health, because all your
- 29:03Speaker 5: health comes from the Lord. In Jesus' name, we do pray,
