- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star-Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KKR-FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning on the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Headlines are brought to you by Frost Brewed Coors Light.
- 0:11Speaker 2: As cold as the Rockies it looks and sounds like
- 0:14Speaker 2: the Seahawks are getting Pro Bowl veteran safety. Julian Love back.
- 0:18Speaker 2: He missed the team's loss to Washington last week with
- 0:20Speaker 2: a calf injury. Got in a walk-through practice Thursday of
- 0:22Speaker 2: last week, but he's practiced both days this week. More
- 0:25Speaker 2: on the injuries for the Seahawks situation. Running back continues
- 0:29Speaker 2: to be up in the air. We'll talk about that.
- 0:31Speaker 2: This morning, Tony Robo in CBS Sports aparted ways, to
- 0:35Speaker 2: use that HR euphemism.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:38Speaker 2: The network said that in a statement Friday. The announcement
- 0:41Speaker 2: comes just after two months following Romo's arrest in Milwaukee
- 0:45Speaker 2: for operating while intoxicated.
- 0:47Speaker 4: J.J.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Watt is the new lead analyst with Jim Nance on
- 0:51Speaker 2: CBS NFL broadcast. NFL Week 4 began last night with
- 0:54Speaker 2: the Browns beating the Steelers on a field goal with
- 0:57Speaker 2: 10 seconds left in Cleveland, 27-24. That was after Aaron
- 1:01Speaker 2: Rodgers rallied the Steelers from being down 21-10 deep into
- 1:04Speaker 2: the second half. The Browns are 3-1.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yeah, that was not on my bingo card for this
- 1:09Speaker 3: NFL season.
- 1:10Speaker 5: 3-1 Browns.
- 1:12Speaker 6: With Deshaun Watson at quarterback.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Remember Tori Lavello? Being all the rage as the new Mariners'
- 1:17Speaker 2: top candidate. Going to replace Dan Wilson. Let's bring him
- 1:20Speaker 2: up here.
- 1:21Speaker 6: Well, scratch that.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Lavello signed a two-year extension and remained manager of the
- 1:24Speaker 2: Arizona Diamondbacks.
- 1:26Speaker 6: The Kraken. Whoa.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:30Speaker 6: They opened a season with a bang. Six bangs, in fact.
- 1:32Speaker 2: A 6-1 win for the Calgary Flames absorbing last night
- 1:36Speaker 2: at the old Saddle Dome in Calgary. Vince Dunn had
- 1:39Speaker 2: a goal and two assists. Jared McCann had three assists
- 1:41Speaker 2: for the Kraken. Chandler Stephenson, did you see that goal
- 1:43Speaker 2: he scored?
- 1:44Speaker 6: I did. A hopscotch over a fallen defender?
- 1:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 6: Landed on both skates and beat the goalie?
- 1:49Speaker 3: That was insane.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Joey Decord stopped 24 of 25 shots. The Kraken play
- 1:54Speaker 2: their second game of the season at Edmonton tomorrow night.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Their home opener is Sunday at Climate Pledge Arena against
- 1:59Speaker 2: the Flames, 5 p.m.
- 2:00Speaker 6: Sunday.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Both the Edmonton and Calgary games, of course, Saturday and
- 2:02Speaker 2: Sunday right here on KJR.
- 2:04Speaker 6: The Sounders break them up, too.
- 2:06Speaker 2: They've won three in a row after last night's third
- 2:09Speaker 2: straight home win over Sporting Kansas City. So much for
- 2:13Speaker 2: that club record winless streak. They've gone from 14th in
- 2:16Speaker 2: the Western Conference to 7th, currently in the MLS playoff bracket.
- 2:21Speaker 2: The Washington Huskies football team play at USC tomorrow, battle
- 2:24Speaker 2: a 3-1 traditional Pac-12 rivalry. You know, that old Big
- 2:27Speaker 2: Ten rivalry, Washington-USC. That coog in the booth is not
- 2:31Speaker 2: happy about this.
- 2:33Speaker 6: I shouldn't bring it up.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Tomorrow, 4.30, USC hosting Washington right here on 93.3 KJR.
- 2:38Speaker 2: The MLB playoffs will resume tomorrow with all four game
- 2:41Speaker 2: ones of the division series. White Sox at Guardians, Yankees
- 2:45Speaker 2: at Rays in the American League, the Braves and the Dodgers,
- 2:47Speaker 2: Padres at Brewers in the National League.
- 2:49Speaker 6: Now on with the Friday show.
- 2:52Speaker 1: As part of our relentless coverage of the NFL.
- 2:55Speaker 6: This is football!
- 2:56Speaker 4: This is football!
- 2:57Speaker 6: This is a.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday.
- 3:01Speaker 6: This crowd is going nuts!
- 3:03Speaker 1: Football Fridays are brought to you by Washington's beef farmers
- 3:07Speaker 1: and ranchers.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Beef, it's what's for dinner.
- 3:11Speaker 1: It's Football Friday with Greg Bell on your home.
- 3:15Speaker 4: For the NFL.
- 3:16Speaker 6: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR-FM. Good morning.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Good to be back. Thanks for Mike Benton filling in yesterday.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Greg Bell, Jessamyn McIntyre back in at Elliott Bay Studios
- 3:29Speaker 2: in downtown Seattle on KJR.
- 3:31Speaker 6: Good morning, man.
- 3:32Speaker 3: It's good to have you back.
- 3:33Speaker 6: Thank you. It was, I say this all the time.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I tell my kids this, I tell my friends this,
- 3:38Speaker 2: and man, the older you get, the more is this true.
- 3:41Speaker 6: Hug the ones you love when you have a.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Chance to do it because you just don't know when
- 3:45Speaker 2: you don't have that chance anymore. No fun burying a
- 3:48Speaker 2: friend and watching a son bury a father and That's
- 3:52Speaker 2: why I was in Oakland, California, actually, yesterday for a
- 3:56Speaker 2: funeral with a great friend, Memorial Servicer Mike Wagaman. He's
- 3:59Speaker 2: a Bay Area legend for 30 years. He covered all sports.
- 4:02Speaker 2: He was the Associated Press main, I don't even call
- 4:07Speaker 2: him a stringer. He was so good, they ended up
- 4:08Speaker 2: giving him a byline by the end of his time
- 4:10Speaker 2: at the AP, but he did everything. He was on
- 4:12Speaker 2: the Raiders beat with me, and we became great friends.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I've told the great Beekert story of chasing him down
- 4:17Speaker 2: and Found the equipment man taking his truck down the road.
- 4:20Speaker 3: I told you that story. I love it.
- 4:22Speaker 2: There's a ton of Mike Wagerman stories I should bring up,
- 4:24Speaker 2: but we told a couple of them yesterday. I had
- 4:26Speaker 2: some great laughs. Writers I've been 25 years since I
- 4:30Speaker 2: covered with some of them and are still great friends
- 4:32Speaker 2: of mine. Steve Corcoran of Contra Costa Times. Phil Barber
- 4:35Speaker 2: came down from Napa. Jerry McDonald, a legendary writer in
- 4:40Speaker 2: the East Bay. Yeah, great friends that I saw.
- 4:43Speaker 6: Monty Poole. Good guys. And yeah, it was... Get the chance.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Just squeeze the ones you love. You're so lucky to
- 4:52Speaker 2: do that because you just never know. But thanks for
- 4:55Speaker 2: Mike Benton filling in. That was a pretty timely fill-in
- 4:58Speaker 2: for Mike Benton.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Worked out pretty well for us, to be honest.
- 5:01Speaker 6: I guess we'll have to have him in on every
- 5:02Speaker 6: Kraken game day.
- 5:05Speaker 5: 6-1.
- 5:05Speaker 2: You'll hear from Mike summarizing the Kraken season opening. Maybe
- 5:09Speaker 2: they just need to play Calgary 84 times.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Well, they're opening with them on the 4th at home.
- 5:14Speaker 6: Two of the best. Two of the first three games.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Against the Kraken's first two or the first three or
- 5:19Speaker 2: against the Flames. They got Edmonton tomorrow night up in
- 5:23Speaker 2: Alberta before they come home late Saturday for their Sunday opener.
- 5:26Speaker 2: It's a 5 o'clock game, so they were smart enough
- 5:29Speaker 2: to wait until the Seahawks opener was over. Excuse me,
- 5:33Speaker 2: their home game against the Chargers is over. The 1
- 5:35Speaker 2: o'clock game for the Seahawks a little after 1 o'clock
- 5:37Speaker 2: and then 5 o'clock right here on KJR.
- 5:39Speaker 6: So there won't be a 12th man postgame.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Show like there usually is on KJR right after a
- 5:44Speaker 2: Seahawks So we'll go from Seahawks right into Kraken on Sunday.
- 5:49Speaker 3: All the sports. We got all the sports for you here.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Huskies tomorrow at USC. The Cougs are at home to
- 5:55Speaker 2: Fresno State. Is that an afternoon or evening game?
- 5:57Speaker 3: Evening, 6.30 pick.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Okay, so national TV game at Fresno State at Martin
- 6:03Speaker 2: Stadium in Pullman. On the show today, the Seahawks injury situation,
- 6:07Speaker 2: including at running back. We were talking about Jadarian Price's
- 6:10Speaker 2: fumble problems at the start of the week. Well, now
- 6:12Speaker 2: he's got an injury concern. The same chest shoulder injury
- 6:14Speaker 2: he got in Arizona kept him out of practice yesterday.
- 6:17Speaker 2: We'll talk about what that means and what that may mean.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And Zach Charbonnet is back on the practice field starting yesterday. No,
- 6:24Speaker 2: he's not going to play this week. He cannot by
- 6:26Speaker 2: league rule play until he's missed at least for the
- 6:28Speaker 2: first four games and Sunday against the Chargers is the Seahawks'
- 6:32Speaker 2: fourth game.
- 6:33Speaker 6: But we'll talk about Zach Charbonnet.
- 6:34Speaker 2: You heard from Jackson Smith and Jigba talk about what
- 6:36Speaker 2: the offense, the jolt that Zach Charbonnet just returning to
- 6:41Speaker 2: the practice field gave the offense yesterday. You'll also hear
- 6:44Speaker 2: Jackson Smith and Jigba, the NFL's runaway leader in receiving
- 6:47Speaker 2: yards and touchdowns already this season after being the NFL
- 6:50Speaker 2: Offensive Player of the Year last year. You'll hear what
- 6:53Speaker 2: he's worked on and been working on this offseason into
- 6:56Speaker 2: this season. Man, nobody can cover him. Doesn't matter what scheme.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Doesn't matter what defensive backs.
- 7:02Speaker 3: He was perfectly covered.
- 7:03Speaker 7: It was the same way I was watching him and
- 7:04Speaker 7: McLaurin back and forth, back and forth.
- 7:06Speaker 3: They were perfectly covered. They're just impossible to cover.
- 7:10Speaker 6: Smith and Jigba, they are double team. They're bracketing. They're
- 7:13Speaker 6: doing both sides coverage. They're layering. It doesn't matter. Cloud.
- 7:17Speaker 7: Shout out to the quarterbacks, too, for finding that just,
- 7:21Speaker 7: you know, Like threading the needle, I would say, on
- 7:24Speaker 7: many of those plays.
- 7:25Speaker 6: That's true.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Sam Darnold was throwing a lot of balls that a
- 7:27Speaker 2: lot of quarterbacks would not. And for many years, we
- 7:29Speaker 2: remember Russell Wilson be at risk averse. And partly because
- 7:33Speaker 2: Pete Carroll shoved it down his throat. But especially early
- 7:37Speaker 2: in his career, he would not throw those passes.
- 7:39Speaker 6: If there was a.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Defender near, even if the receiver had a physical mismatch,
- 7:43Speaker 2: DK Metcalf early in his career often was frustrated that
- 7:46Speaker 2: Russell Wilson just didn't chuck him the ball.
- 7:48Speaker 6: But Wilson would not do that.
- 7:50Speaker 2: And many seasons for his low interception rate was because
- 7:52Speaker 2: he wouldn't throw into the windows that Sam Darnold was
- 7:54Speaker 2: throwing into in Washington to Smith and Jigwa. That's an
- 7:57Speaker 2: interesting point. With Kraken, we'll talk more about the opener.
- 8:00Speaker 2: We'll detail the goals. We'll get Mike Benton's view on
- 8:04Speaker 2: how that first game went. I know it's one of 84,
- 8:07Speaker 2: but after Kraken hockey here the last couple of years,
- 8:09Speaker 2: that was a pretty encouraging start.
- 8:11Speaker 6: A 6-1 victory here.
- 8:13Speaker 2: At Calgary at 11 o'clock, our weekly high school football showcase.
- 8:16Speaker 2: This week's game is Eastlake and Skyline, a showdown in
- 8:19Speaker 2: the Kingco Crown South Division, undefeated Skyline Spartans, that is.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Peyton Pelour is the head coach at Skyline. Jessamyn used
- 8:27Speaker 2: to be on a Washington State Cougars sideline with Peyton Palloy,
- 8:29Speaker 2: who's a linebacker.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Covered all eight of his years there.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 8:33Speaker 7: Well, I mean, he got a gray shirt, a red shirt,
- 8:36Speaker 7: and I believe a COVID year as well. But he
- 8:40Speaker 7: was there for so long that I actually got to
- 8:42Speaker 7: know him. And that's not the way of college football
- 8:44Speaker 7: these days anymore. So covering someone's entire career has actually
- 8:48Speaker 7: become very unique. And I can't wait for him to
- 8:51Speaker 7: explain why he went to high school because I watched
- 8:55Speaker 7: him as a GA at, you know, he was with
- 8:57Speaker 7: the Mississippi State. He was with Coach Leach there. And
- 9:01Speaker 7: I saw him at USC. And he decided to coach
- 9:04Speaker 7: just to coach. And I like that story.
- 9:06Speaker 2: He talks about this. These guys have jobs and they teach.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Most of these coaches teach. So we don't always get
- 9:12Speaker 2: them at 11 o'clock. We get them at 9, 930.
- 9:15Speaker 2: We taped the interview with both Greg Hurd, the Eastlake
- 9:17Speaker 2: High School coach, a former Eastern Washington University EG, by
- 9:20Speaker 2: the way, who was at a Seahawks training camp in 2013.
- 9:22Speaker 6: He talks about.
- 9:24Speaker 2: The experience of being in a Pete Carroll training camp
- 9:26Speaker 2: and how that shaped him, how he coaches. And Peyton Pelora,
- 9:29Speaker 2: like Jessamyn said, talked about how, I'm out of college coaching.
- 9:33Speaker 2: He said, what did he say, 48 weeks a year
- 9:36Speaker 2: he was coaching and recruiting and recruiting his own guys
- 9:38Speaker 2: to stay and recruiting new guys, both at the SEC
- 9:41Speaker 2: and the Big Ten level and Pac-12 level at USC
- 9:45Speaker 2: before they went to the Big Ten and at Mississippi
- 9:48Speaker 2: State for Mike Leach.
- 9:48Speaker 6: And he said, I'm out.
- 9:50Speaker 2: No more. And many coaches are doing that. Not all
- 9:52Speaker 2: of them go back to high school like Peyton Pelour did,
- 9:54Speaker 2: but now he's coaching his alma mater at Skyline High School.
- 9:57Speaker 2: They're undefeated 4-0 against Eastlake 2-2 tonight on the Plateau.
- 10:00Speaker 2: That's our featured game of the week, and you'll hear
- 10:02Speaker 2: both from Coach of Skyline, Peyton Pelour, and Eastlake Coach
- 10:05Speaker 2: Greg Hurd at 11 o'clock, 1130. Your chance to be
- 10:08Speaker 2: a part of the show, as it always is at
- 10:09Speaker 2: that time, on the Beacon, on the Tacoma Dodge text line.
- 10:16Speaker 2: And the TalkBack app, go to the iHeartRadio app, or
- 10:19Speaker 2: the little button on the 933KGR. com website. The little red
- 10:23Speaker 2: microphone button at the top is your chance to be
- 10:25Speaker 2: a part of the show. Leave a voice message of
- 10:27Speaker 2: 30 seconds or less, and Jessamyn will play that at 1130. 1135, again,
- 10:33Speaker 2: your chance to win $ 1, 000, our weekly prize from the
- 10:37Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. I'm not sure, actually, what
- 10:41Speaker 2: I'm going to do yet.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I have a couple of potentials.
- 10:44Speaker 6: All right.
- 10:45Speaker 7: It's interesting because usually you come in with what you're
- 10:48Speaker 7: ready to do.
- 10:48Speaker 6: Yes, I did.
- 10:50Speaker 2: And I was totally unplugged yesterday, so I hadn't thought
- 10:53Speaker 2: about it, to be honest with you.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Well, good for you.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Since the Steelers biffed it last night, I don't have
- 10:57Speaker 2: any NFL jumping out at me.
- 11:00Speaker 6: Okay. 49451, the first question under the Coma Dodge text.
- 11:02Speaker 6: I know two of them.
- 11:04Speaker 2: One, the Kraken fans out there, are you like, hey,
- 11:08Speaker 2: this will work. Lane Lambert's second season begins with a
- 11:11Speaker 2: 6-1 win at Calgary. How encouraging that was. For the Kraken,
- 11:15Speaker 2: what did you think of the Kraken opener last night?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Anything new, different you noticed? I noticed Matty Benier's taking
- 11:20Speaker 2: a slap shot during a penalty kill. It was, I think,
- 11:23Speaker 2: the only penalty kill of the night, which is part
- 11:24Speaker 2: of the reason that the Kraken won. They stayed out
- 11:26Speaker 2: of the penalty box. But he took a shot into
- 11:28Speaker 2: his legs and limped off and then came back on
- 11:30Speaker 2: and ended up scoring a goal later after getting whacked.
- 11:34Speaker 2: But what was encouraging about you watching the Kraken last night?
- 11:36Speaker 4: They're 1-0.
- 11:37Speaker 2: They're in first place. The first place Kraken play tomorrow
- 11:39Speaker 2: night against Edmonton. And then the other question off the
- 11:42Speaker 2: top for the 49451 The Tacoma Dodge text line. Tori
- 11:47Speaker 2: Lodello re-signs with Arizona, some fans' favorite, to be the
- 11:51Speaker 2: new manager of the Mariners. So where would you go next?
- 11:53Speaker 2: Who do you want to be the Mariners' next manager?
- 11:57Speaker 8: 49451.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Thoughts about the Seahawks and Jadarian Price's injury, the running
- 12:01Speaker 2: back situation, Zach Charbonnet. The question now becomes, should he
- 12:05Speaker 2: come back soon?
- 12:08Speaker 6: Because they need him. There's no doubt they need him.
- 12:10Speaker 2: They have a rookie running back, the lead running back,
- 12:13Speaker 2: who fumbles, or at least has fumbled twice in two games,
- 12:15Speaker 2: and now he's banged up. And the backs behind him,
- 12:18Speaker 2: one of them's slow. Emmanuel Wilson is not a fleet
- 12:22Speaker 2: make-you-miss running back. He will run you over more than
- 12:25Speaker 2: he will make you miss. And cutting in the open field,
- 12:28Speaker 2: we didn't see the speed and break away from defenders
- 12:30Speaker 2: against Washington.
- 12:31Speaker 6: George Helani is the third back, and that's pretty much it.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Veles Jones up off the practice squad. Cupboard's not exactly
- 12:39Speaker 2: full at running back since Kenneth Walker left, so they
- 12:42Speaker 2: need Zach Charbonnet, but he is only seven and a
- 12:45Speaker 2: half months removed from reconstructive knee surgery, Jessamyn. It's not
- 12:48Speaker 2: like you just throw him out there next week, I
- 12:50Speaker 2: don't think, and play against San Francisco just because he's
- 12:52Speaker 2: eligible to.
- 12:53Speaker 7: No, I think that they are in a position where
- 12:57Speaker 7: they can wean someone back in, and that's a really
- 13:01Speaker 7: good thing.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Even if the position is hurting right now and fumbling
- 13:05Speaker 2: right now, I don't know that you bring back Zach Charbonnet.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Now the rub here, of course, is I talked to
- 13:09Speaker 2: Chuck at seven o'clock this morning when I do my
- 13:11Speaker 2: Seahawks talk with him every day at seven. The rub
- 13:15Speaker 2: is for personally for Charbonnet. He wants to get back
- 13:17Speaker 2: on the field yesterday because this is a contract year
- 13:20Speaker 2: for him.
- 13:21Speaker 6: People have forgotten among his.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Injuries and his rehab and trying to come back from
- 13:25Speaker 2: this torn ACL he got in the playoff game in
- 13:27Speaker 2: January against the 49ers. His contract ends after this year.
- 13:31Speaker 2: His rookie deal as a second round pick. expires after
- 13:34Speaker 2: this season. So every week that he doesn't play is
- 13:37Speaker 2: one fewer chance to audition for money. This ain't like
- 13:40Speaker 2: Major League Baseball or the NBA or NHL with these
- 13:42Speaker 2: guaranteed contracts year over year. He's done after this year,
- 13:46Speaker 2: and he either has to prove to the Seahawks or
- 13:48Speaker 2: the rest of the league that he's back from this injury.
- 13:50Speaker 2: And now he has only, after this game, because he
- 13:53Speaker 2: can't play per PUP rules, physically unable to perform those rules,
- 13:56Speaker 2: he will only have 13 more chances to prove his worth. Now,
- 14:01Speaker 2: the Seahawks, of course, know him from three previous seasons,
- 14:03Speaker 2: and the fact that he had 12 rushing touchdowns last
- 14:05Speaker 2: year in a job share with Kenneth Walker. That was
- 14:08Speaker 2: the most rushing touchdowns for the Seahawks since some guy
- 14:10Speaker 2: named Marshawn Lynch in 2014. He's okay.
- 14:13Speaker 6: Yeah, he did all right.
- 14:16Speaker 2: But the point is, it's not like Charbonnet's just sitting
- 14:20Speaker 2: back going out chill and come back whenever you want.
- 14:22Speaker 6: He wants to come back now, but.
- 14:24Speaker 2: He's only seven and a half months removed from an
- 14:26Speaker 2: injury that sometimes takes 12 months to fully recover from.
- 14:29Speaker 6: It's, it's, yeah.
- 14:32Speaker 2: This team has a history of being very conservative on
- 14:35Speaker 2: bringing back major injury players. They always side on the
- 14:39Speaker 2: longer end of those recovery and practice ramp-up times. Now,
- 14:42Speaker 2: Charbonnet has a 21-day window that began yesterday.
- 14:45Speaker 6: What's that mean? Well, he has from yesterday until 21 days.
- 14:48Speaker 6: So what is that?
- 14:49Speaker 4: October 22nd.
- 14:50Speaker 2: The Seahawks have by October 22nd to decide whether they
- 14:55Speaker 2: activate him to the roster to play or keep him
- 14:59Speaker 2: on the pup list season-ending for the rest of the season.
- 15:02Speaker 2: So either or, they wanted to ramp him up for 21.
- 15:07Speaker 2: I don't know if it's all 21 days, but a
- 15:09Speaker 2: lot of the 21 days. Because here's the other thing.
- 15:12Speaker 2: He's not going to play this week.
- 15:13Speaker 6: He's not allowed to.
- 15:13Speaker 2: It'd be a rush for him a week after getting
- 15:16Speaker 2: on the practice field to play against the 49ers, I think.
- 15:19Speaker 6: Then they have a short week and play at Denver.
- 15:22Speaker 2: They got to get on a plane a Wednesday after
- 15:23Speaker 2: a Sunday game and play at Denver on a Thursday night,
- 15:26Speaker 2: October the 16th.
- 15:28Speaker 6: Is that the week he comes back? Then he's only...
- 15:32Speaker 6: two weeks back to practice.
- 15:33Speaker 2: He's only like 13 days into his 21-day window.
- 15:37Speaker 6: So you'd be short-shifting that too. I don't know.
- 15:44Speaker 2: If I were them, they're hoping to play in February.
- 15:48Speaker 2: They need Jack Charbonnet in January and February. I'd bring
- 15:50Speaker 2: him back after that extended mini-bye thing and play the
- 15:54Speaker 2: following Sunday after the Denver game.
- 15:56Speaker 6: What is that, October the 26th?
- 15:59Speaker 2: And now you've given him his full 21 days to
- 16:01Speaker 2: ramp up. You add him to the active roster during
- 16:03Speaker 2: that long mini-bye break, and then you roll from there,
- 16:06Speaker 2: from late October to the end of the season. And
- 16:09Speaker 2: even late October, Jessamyn is still only, what, eight months?
- 16:12Speaker 3: Eight months, yeah.
- 16:12Speaker 6: Removed from surgery.
- 16:13Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 16:14Speaker 7: And, I mean, I don't have the facilities available to me,
- 16:19Speaker 7: but someone who has gone through reconstructive knee surgery, that feels,
- 16:24Speaker 7: I had to take it very, very one step at
- 16:26Speaker 7: a time, and I know that eight months is doable
- 16:30Speaker 7: in the NFL with everything that you have available to you.
- 16:33Speaker 7: But I would hate for him to be rushed just
- 16:36Speaker 7: for health reasons. Like you, you want to be good
- 16:38Speaker 7: for the long haul. And so hopefully he's good to go.
- 16:44Speaker 7: And I trust in the Seahawks, you know, medical staff
- 16:47Speaker 7: and their athletic training staff to determine that correctly. And
- 16:51Speaker 7: I just hope that when he comes back, he comes
- 16:52Speaker 7: back as good as he could possibly be.
- 16:56Speaker 6: And here's the other thing.
- 16:57Speaker 2: It is not, I mean, it's so common now, ACLs
- 17:01Speaker 2: and reconstructive knee surgery, but they're not all the same.
- 17:03Speaker 6: And the recoveries are not all the same.
- 17:05Speaker 3: No, every body is different.
- 17:06Speaker 6: Ask Kenny McIntosh. He has still not come back from that.
- 17:10Speaker 6: And the Seahawks cut him.
- 17:12Speaker 2: This is not a fait accompli that he's going to
- 17:14Speaker 2: come back seven and a half months after surgery and be, boop, fine,
- 17:17Speaker 2: let's go.
- 17:19Speaker 6: He could have soft.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Tissue issues, hamstrings and calves and muscle issues from coming
- 17:24Speaker 2: back and getting on the football field for the first
- 17:25Speaker 2: time since January. It's not a slam dunk, though. You
- 17:28Speaker 2: just put him on the field and he's ready to go. So, yeah,
- 17:33Speaker 2: I've seen people saying that, man, he's going to be
- 17:35Speaker 2: ready for the 49ers.
- 17:36Speaker 6: I don't know, man.
- 17:37Speaker 2: I'd pump the brakes on that. As you said, Jessamyn,
- 17:39Speaker 2: the long term is the bigger deal here. Again, the
- 17:43Speaker 2: competing factor is that this is the last year of
- 17:46Speaker 2: his contract.
- 17:47Speaker 6: So we'll see.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Next week will be much more telling on what his
- 17:51Speaker 2: practice regimen is, but he is back to practice yesterday.
- 17:54Speaker 2: You'll hear from Brian Fleury, the offensive coordinator, about his excitement.
- 17:57Speaker 2: You'll hear from Jackson Smith and Jigba talking about the offense,
- 18:00Speaker 2: excited for the work that Zach Charbonnet has put in.
- 18:04Speaker 2: But you also hear from Brian Fleury about Charbonnet, about
- 18:07Speaker 2: the running back situation, about Jadarian Price's fumbles. That was
- 18:11Speaker 2: the issue at the beginning of the week. Now his
- 18:12Speaker 2: issue is that he's got a chest, ass, shoulder injury
- 18:15Speaker 2: and did not practice yesterday. Three days before they play
- 18:18Speaker 2: the Los Angeles Chargers. 49451 on the Tacoma Dodge text line.
- 18:22Speaker 2: I already got some cracking text coming in.
- 18:25Speaker 6: We got some recommendations for the Mariners' new manager job.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Oh, anything spicy?
- 18:33Speaker 6: A bench coach of the Braves, previously with the Orioles,
- 18:35Speaker 6: Tony Manzolino.
- 18:37Speaker 5: Okay.
- 18:37Speaker 6: I've heard that name around, too.
- 18:39Speaker 10: Okay.
- 18:40Speaker 6: I've heard Raul Banez.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Well, I've heard a lot of Raul Banez.
- 18:44Speaker 2: A lot of people think that he's just going to
- 18:45Speaker 2: be like a Dan Wilson, but yes and no. Dan
- 18:48Speaker 2: Wilson hadn't had any managerial experience, nor has Raul Abanez,
- 18:53Speaker 2: the former left fielder for the Mariners. But Raul Abanez
- 18:56Speaker 2: has been in the front office of the Dodgers, who
- 18:58Speaker 2: haven't done.
- 18:59Speaker 6: Too badly in the last few years.
- 19:02Speaker 2: And he has been intricate into the baseball operations, I'm told,
- 19:05Speaker 2: from what's going on down in Los Angeles. So would
- 19:09Speaker 2: they go back? That would be another nod to the Mariners' past.
- 19:13Speaker 2: This one with a twist, but he would not have
- 19:15Speaker 2: manager experience either, as Scott Service and Dan Wilson did not.
- 19:20Speaker 2: You heard Jerry DiPoto at the start of this week
- 19:23Speaker 2: saying we want someone preferably with experience.
- 19:25Speaker 6: What did he say?
- 19:26Speaker 2: Not a prerequisite, but a preference that the next manager
- 19:30Speaker 2: has experience.
- 19:32Speaker 6: Who would you like? 49451, who do you want to
- 19:34Speaker 6: be the new Mariners manager?
- 19:36Speaker 2: I see Jay Buhner. I don't think Jay Buhner is
- 19:38Speaker 2: going to want to do this. Just going to throw
- 19:40Speaker 2: that out there. Jessamyn doesn't either.
- 19:43Speaker 7: I just don't see it. Well, as the current administration runs,
- 19:48Speaker 7: he would not want to.
- 19:49Speaker 3: I don't see him.
- 19:50Speaker 7: As someone who would never want to manage, but he
- 19:52Speaker 7: would not want to be handcuffed by what the Mariners do.
- 19:55Speaker 6: Yeah, I pad baseball and Jay Buhner. I don't think
- 19:57Speaker 6: that would be a good match.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Up next, let's talk about the Seahawks. You'll hear from
- 20:02Speaker 2: Jackson Smith and Jigba. You'll hear from Brian Fleury. You'll
- 20:05Speaker 2: hear from Julian Love, who got back on the practice
- 20:07Speaker 2: field yesterday and in addition to Zach Charbonnet. That's all
- 20:10Speaker 2: three days before they play the Chargers, the winless Chargers.
- 20:14Speaker 2: 11 o'clock, our high school football showcase. Game of the
- 20:17Speaker 2: week this week is Eastlake at Skyline up in the Plateau.
- 20:20Speaker 2: 4-0 Skyline against their neighborhood. I mean, they're one mile apart.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Those kids played growing up together.
- 20:26Speaker 3: And it's fun.
- 20:27Speaker 6: You ever been out there?
- 20:28Speaker 2: It's East Lake High School, then Eastside Catholic, then Skyline,
- 20:31Speaker 2: all together within a mile.
- 20:32Speaker 4: One, two, three.
- 20:33Speaker 6: That's crazy.
- 20:34Speaker 3: I didn't realize it was that close. It's weird.
- 20:36Speaker 6: You go there and you're like, wait a minute. There's
- 20:38Speaker 6: another high school. There's another.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:39Speaker 6: Two public schools flanking a private athletic powerhouse on this.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Where do all the kids come from?
- 20:44Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 20:45Speaker 2: How do they draw district boundaries there?
- 20:47Speaker 6: They just disappear in a situation like that. But yeah.
- 20:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:50Speaker 2: It's like neighbors going to different schools there a mile apart. Yeah,
- 20:54Speaker 2: you'll hear from Greg Hurd, the Eastlake High School coach.
- 20:56Speaker 2: You'll hear from Peyton Pelora, the former Coug linebacker and
- 20:58Speaker 2: skyline coach at 11 o'clock.
- 21:00Speaker 6: And then your chance to.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel in
- 21:05Speaker 2: our Factor Fiction Contest at 1135. All that's coming up
- 21:08Speaker 2: on a Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 21:16Speaker 1: To the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday with Greg
- 21:20Speaker 1: Bell on your home for the NFL. Sports Radio 93.3
- 21:26Speaker 1: KJR FM.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Hi, welcome back. Tons of football this weekend, of course.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Our featured game of the week in high school football tonight.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Eastlake and Skyline. We'll talk to the two coaches, Eastlake's
- 21:41Speaker 2: Greg Hurd, Peyton Pelour of Skyline at 11 o'clock on
- 21:44Speaker 2: our weekly high school showcase. Then tomorrow, of course, the
- 21:47Speaker 2: Washington Huskies go down to the Coliseum in Los Angeles
- 21:49Speaker 2: to play USC. Battle of 3-1 teams at the 4.30
- 21:53Speaker 2: kickoff here on KJR. Sunday we've got NFL action before
- 21:58Speaker 2: the Seahawks play the Chargers at Lumen Field just after
- 22:01Speaker 2: 1 o'clock on Sunday. And then at 5 o'clock, the Kraken,
- 22:05Speaker 2: their home opener is Sunday against the Calgary Flames at
- 22:08Speaker 2: Climate Pledge Arena. That's a 5 o'clock face-off puck drop
- 22:12Speaker 2: here on 93.3 KJRFM with the pregame show with Mike Benton,
- 22:16Speaker 2: who you'll hear from later in the show about the
- 22:19Speaker 2: Kraken opener last night, a bofo opener, 6-1. The Kraken
- 22:23Speaker 2: beating up on the Flames in Calgary there in Edmonton
- 22:26Speaker 2: tomorrow night, the Kraken are. The Seahawks were on the
- 22:29Speaker 2: practice field yesterday, and so was Julian Love. For the
- 22:32Speaker 2: second consecutive practice, he was there on the field, and
- 22:36Speaker 2: it looks pretty good. Sounds pretty good that Love's going
- 22:39Speaker 2: to play on Sunday against the Chargers after missing the
- 22:41Speaker 2: Washington game with a calf injury. This was the Pro
- 22:43Speaker 2: Bowl veteran safety yesterday.
- 22:44Speaker 11: Rangers win today and eliminate you guys from the postseason.
- 22:47Speaker 6: I know it was a slim chance already.
- 22:48Speaker 8: You guys have probably already been assessing it.
- 22:50Speaker 6: Well, that was Mariners, but that's okay.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Sorry, there is a technical glitch here. Yeah, let me
- 22:57Speaker 3: get to actual Julian.
- 22:59Speaker 7: Feeling good.
- 23:00Speaker 11: Yeah, kind of a random thing last week. But just
- 23:04Speaker 11: attacked it. Training staff did a good job.
- 23:07Speaker 6: So I'm feeling good.
- 23:08Speaker 4: What was it that happened?
- 23:09Speaker 11: Just kind of my calf just kind of went on
- 23:11Speaker 11: me a little bit. Yeah, I kind of really just
- 23:14Speaker 11: wasn't doing anything too crazy. And so, yeah, just kind
- 23:17Speaker 11: of starting having Thursday with the flight, the quick turnaround,
- 23:20Speaker 11: just things just kind of weren't able to progress quick
- 23:22Speaker 11: enough to get out there.
- 23:24Speaker 6: It was in practice?
- 23:24Speaker 11: Yeah, it was kind of as we were kind of
- 23:28Speaker 11: doing our walkthrough kind of warm up.
- 23:30Speaker 6: So you're expecting to play Sunday? Yeah, I feel good.
- 23:33Speaker 11: I'm going to try to push. Obviously, keep working and
- 23:35Speaker 11: see how practice goes today, tomorrow.
- 23:37Speaker 6: I feel pretty good. That is an odd injury.
- 23:41Speaker 2: If you get hurt in the walkthrough, that's a morning
- 23:43Speaker 2: indoor practices that they're in t-shirts, bucket hats, and just
- 23:47Speaker 2: literally walking through the plays before the main practice in
- 23:49Speaker 2: the afternoon. And they do that on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
- 23:53Speaker 2: So that is unusual to get hurt in that regard
- 23:55Speaker 2: and that way.
- 23:56Speaker 6: And he didn't play.
- 23:56Speaker 2: So the Seahawks had to start to practice squad call-ups
- 23:59Speaker 2: at safety. AJ Finley, and Rodney Thomas, both of whom
- 24:03Speaker 2: have now been added to the active roster. Still, that
- 24:07Speaker 2: was not the plan in the end of August, beginning
- 24:09Speaker 2: of September. It was supposed to be Ty Okada.
- 24:13Speaker 6: And Julian Love. Sounds like they're going to get Love back.
- 24:15Speaker 2: And Okada practiced yesterday for the first time since the
- 24:17Speaker 2: end of August. He has had a hamstring issue since
- 24:20Speaker 2: the very end of the preseason. He hasn't practiced at
- 24:22Speaker 2: all in the regular season until yesterday. He was a
- 24:25Speaker 2: limited participant in practice, so there is at least a
- 24:28Speaker 2: glimmer of possibility that that the Seahawks could be whole
- 24:32Speaker 2: in the back end of the defense with both their
- 24:33Speaker 2: deep safeties plan. We'll find out more today. One o'clock
- 24:36Speaker 2: is when the injury report comes out for the game
- 24:39Speaker 2: on Sunday against the 0-3 Chargers. Of question now is
- 24:42Speaker 2: also Jadarian Price, the rookie running back.
- 24:45Speaker 6: Chest and shoulder issue.
- 24:48Speaker 2: The shoulder issue from the Arizona game.
- 24:50Speaker 6: They keep listing his chest. Mike McDonald has said it
- 24:52Speaker 6: was shoulder issues.
- 24:54Speaker 2: He practiced on a limited basis Wednesday, Price, the lead
- 24:56Speaker 2: running back, did. And then yesterday he did not practice.
- 24:58Speaker 2: That's a step back, of course. If you're going to
- 25:00Speaker 2: play on Sunday, you usually don't take Thursday off, three
- 25:03Speaker 2: days before the game. This is what Coach Brian Fleury
- 25:08Speaker 2: talked about, his running back situation, and also about Price's
- 25:11Speaker 2: fumbling situation.
- 25:12Speaker 6: New offensive coordinator, Brian Fleury.
- 25:15Speaker 12: When you went back and watched it, what stood out
- 25:17Speaker 12: to you about the run game and sort of the struggles.
- 25:19Speaker 8: It gained in going in?
- 25:21Speaker 13: Yeah, going into it, they're obviously heavily invested in their
- 25:24Speaker 13: front seven. I think they've dedicated the most salary cap
- 25:26Speaker 13: space in the league to that area. And Durante does
- 25:29Speaker 13: a phenomenal job with the schematics of making it really
- 25:31Speaker 13: challenging to run the ball, especially early in the game.
- 25:34Speaker 13: So we had a plan to try and sustain the run.
- 25:36Speaker 13: We knew it was going to be challenging. That's why
- 25:38Speaker 13: we kind of went to some of the passes early on,
- 25:39Speaker 13: some of the play actions and screens, trying to loosen
- 25:41Speaker 13: them up. And then the game, the way it flowed,
- 25:45Speaker 13: kind of dictated getting away from it a little bit
- 25:46Speaker 13: later on. When you find yourself down 14 in the
- 25:48Speaker 13: middle of the third quarter and knowing that third down
- 25:51Speaker 13: offers different challenges. So trying to avoid some of that,
- 25:54Speaker 13: it just kind of led to us getting to some
- 25:55Speaker 13: plays we felt really good about in the past game
- 25:57Speaker 13: and moving away from that side of things.
- 25:59Speaker 14: Is there a recurring or concerning theme that you've noticed
- 26:02Speaker 14: with Jadarian Price's fumbles? Is there anything that stands out
- 26:05Speaker 14: to you, or are they just kind of fluky plays?
- 26:07Speaker 13: No, I mean, he's not the first rookie to have
- 26:10Speaker 13: ball security issues, right? And so I have a lot
- 26:12Speaker 13: of confidence in Coach Hamm to work him through that
- 26:14Speaker 13: and bring him along in the right way, in a
- 26:16Speaker 13: positive way. I have no doubt at all that he'll
- 26:18Speaker 13: overcome that.
- 26:19Speaker 2: When you have some short yardage challenges, is it tempting
- 26:22Speaker 2: to use the Varner play more often?
- 26:26Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, we kind of have parameters as to
- 26:28Speaker 13: when that's available, the actual distance, because it's not ever
- 26:31Speaker 13: just fourth and one, it's fourth and half a yard,
- 26:33Speaker 13: it's fourth and two thirds of a yard, right? Like,
- 26:35Speaker 13: so we talk about where we feel good about executing
- 26:37Speaker 13: that at a high percentage and when we don't. And then,
- 26:40Speaker 13: you know, there's a lot of other ways to gain
- 26:42Speaker 13: a yard.
- 26:43Speaker 15: Was it like a long yard near the goal line
- 26:47Speaker 15: where you guys didn't get it?
- 26:49Speaker 13: Yeah, that was not a consideration for that play at all.
- 26:52Speaker 14: With Jax, I mean, we talk about him all the time,
- 26:54Speaker 14: but in the red zone in particular, you think of
- 26:56Speaker 14: red zone guys.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Being the big 6'4, Calvin Johnson types.
- 27:00Speaker 15: What about his game allows him to be so good
- 27:02Speaker 15: in the red.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Zone when he's not the biggest guy?
- 27:04Speaker 13: He's just got a really diverse route tree and a
- 27:06Speaker 13: great feeling for leverage in space. And leverage meaning he
- 27:10Speaker 13: can feel where a defender is on him and how
- 27:12Speaker 13: much more he might have to lean in one direction
- 27:14Speaker 13: before he counters. And it's something that you can't really teach.
- 27:17Speaker 13: It's just his unique body presence and feel for space
- 27:21Speaker 13: and time.
- 27:23Speaker 6: Have you thought the right guard rotation has kind of
- 27:24Speaker 6: worked out these last couple weeks?
- 27:26Speaker 13: It's worked out the way we hoped. It's not an
- 27:28Speaker 13: indictment on Christian. Christian could play the whole game and
- 27:30Speaker 13: we'd be fine with it. The thought is that Bo
- 27:33Speaker 13: at some point might have to play in a much
- 27:35Speaker 13: larger role and we would hate for that to be
- 27:36Speaker 13: his first experience. So the thought is just simply the
- 27:39Speaker 13: best possible way to develop him while putting ourselves in
- 27:42Speaker 13: a good position for now and then equally down the road.
- 27:45Speaker 6: A little context there.
- 27:46Speaker 2: That's Brian Fleury, the new offensive coordinator, talking about right
- 27:49Speaker 2: guard situation at the end. Anthony Bradford's going to miss
- 27:51Speaker 2: a couple more games on injured reserve with a hip
- 27:53Speaker 2: and knee issues. In his stead, it's been Christian Haynes starting,
- 27:58Speaker 2: the third-year former draft pick a couple years ago from Connecticut.
- 28:01Speaker 2: And Bo Stevens, the rookie fifth-round pick from Iowa, has
- 28:04Speaker 2: been alternating with him. Now, it was a 60-40 split
- 28:07Speaker 2: in Washington, and Mike McDonald said afterwards, don't expect that
- 28:10Speaker 2: to continue. It's still going to be Christian Haynes, it
- 28:13Speaker 2: sounds like, starting, but maybe Bo Stevens playing less against
- 28:15Speaker 2: the Chargers than the 40% he got at Washington. Now
- 28:19Speaker 2: let's go on to what he talked about, the barnyard play.
- 28:21Speaker 2: It was interesting because he echoed, Fleury did, what McDonald
- 28:24Speaker 2: said all last year, that all one yards are not
- 28:26Speaker 2: the same. And it's pretty obvious that if it's not
- 28:30Speaker 2: within a yard, like three-quarters of a yard or a
- 28:33Speaker 2: half yard, they're not doing it. And it's not like
- 28:36Speaker 2: the Eagles who do it in fourth and two. But
- 28:39Speaker 2: the Seahawks have decided philosophically that they are only going
- 28:42Speaker 2: to do that barnyard play or consider it if it's
- 28:44Speaker 2: inside of a yard to go. It was outside of
- 28:47Speaker 2: a yard at Washington on fourth and goal. And you
- 28:49Speaker 2: heard Brian Flurry say that was not a consideration for
- 28:51Speaker 2: that play at all. They went pass, pass, pass, second, third,
- 28:55Speaker 2: and fourth and goal at Washington. Now, the week before,
- 28:59Speaker 2: When they had first and goal to six, they went run, run, run, run, run.
- 29:03Speaker 6: And they went four straight runs.
- 29:05Speaker 2: And the fourth one was with seven offensive linemen on
- 29:08Speaker 2: the field, including Ola Oluwatimi as the fullback, the backup center.
- 29:12Speaker 2: So they've gone in both extremes the last two weeks
- 29:14Speaker 2: and failed both times. It would certainly help if Jadarian
- 29:19Speaker 2: Price was an option at the goal line, but he's not.
- 29:22Speaker 2: They don't trust him to hold onto the ball enough
- 29:24Speaker 2: yet for that. And even before the fumble issues, Emmanuel
- 29:27Speaker 2: Wilson was their short yardage back. So Price is not
- 29:31Speaker 2: yet the guy that can cut and make a guy
- 29:34Speaker 2: miss if they get penetration in the backfield on short
- 29:36Speaker 2: yardies because they aren't using him in that role. And
- 29:39Speaker 2: now Price has a chest and shoulder issue that had
- 29:41Speaker 2: him off the practice field yesterday. Here's a short yardies
- 29:43Speaker 2: back who scored his touchdown, Zach Charbonnet. He's back on
- 29:46Speaker 2: the field as of yesterday. He's still on the physically
- 29:49Speaker 2: unable to perform list. He has to miss four games
- 29:51Speaker 2: on that. The Seahawks play their fourth game Sunday. But
- 29:53Speaker 2: now he has a 21-day practice window that began yesterday
- 29:56Speaker 2: to come back from reconstructive knee surgery seven and a
- 29:58Speaker 2: half months ago Jackson Smith and Jigba, among the things
- 30:01Speaker 2: he talked about yesterday was Zach Charbonnet coming back to practice.
- 30:05Speaker 8: Yeah, awesome to have Zach back.
- 30:06Speaker 16: I mean, he's someone, you know, this team needs. He's
- 30:10Speaker 16: a competitor. You know, we came in together and, you know,
- 30:15Speaker 16: definitely a leader in that room. So it's a big
- 30:18Speaker 16: deal to, you know, have him back, and I'm excited
- 30:20Speaker 16: for him.
- 30:21Speaker 8: The whole team is.
- 30:21Speaker 16: He works extremely hard day in and day out. So,
- 30:25Speaker 16: you know, happy to see him back.
- 30:28Speaker 15: He's about seven and a half months out from surgery
- 30:31Speaker 15: now to kind of see where he's at given the
- 30:34Speaker 15: injury and the, like, what, what does that kind of
- 30:36Speaker 15: say about him and that, that kind of work that
- 30:38Speaker 15: you talked about?
- 30:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:39Speaker 16: I mean, he, you know, you know, he's going to
- 30:41Speaker 16: do whatever he can to, to get back. And I
- 30:44Speaker 16: think it just shows his dedication, his preparation, you know,
- 30:48Speaker 16: a real intelligent dude that understands his body and wants
- 30:53Speaker 16: to be out there. So we appreciate him. Like, Getting
- 30:57Speaker 16: things done and making it a speedy recovery. I'm so
- 31:01Speaker 16: happy for him.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Jackson Smith and Jigbo, talking about Zach Charbonnet returning to practice,
- 31:06Speaker 2: 21-day window. Again, my best guess is he plays maybe
- 31:10Speaker 2: the Denver game, October 16th, week six, maybe week seven
- 31:14Speaker 2: after practice. That Denver game when they get the mini-bye
- 31:17Speaker 2: and the 10-day break. Jackson Smith and Jigba leads the
- 31:19Speaker 2: NFL in receptions, yards, touchdowns, and ways of getting covered.
- 31:25Speaker 6: And yet he still gets open all the time.
- 31:27Speaker 3: It's insane.
- 31:29Speaker 4: It does.
- 31:29Speaker 2: It's bracket coverage, cloud coverage, single man zone over, cover
- 31:35Speaker 2: six with zone and man mix.
- 31:38Speaker 6: It doesn't matter.
- 31:39Speaker 2: He's getting open and they're throwing the ball, as Justin mentioned,
- 31:41Speaker 2: even when they're not open.
- 31:43Speaker 6: Even when he's not open.
- 31:44Speaker 2: This is what he said he was working on this
- 31:46Speaker 2: past offseason to get better because it's certainly working.
- 31:50Speaker 16: I've always been talented with catching the football, honestly. I
- 31:55Speaker 16: think just over time, my development that I look towards,
- 32:01Speaker 16: look forward to in the offseason is getting bigger, faster, stronger,
- 32:05Speaker 16: growing into my body. But when it comes to catching
- 32:09Speaker 16: the football, I know I'm super talented in that area,
- 32:12Speaker 16: so it's just just repetitions and staying on top of
- 32:15Speaker 16: it and, and focusing, um, catching a lot of passes
- 32:19Speaker 16: in the off season.
- 32:20Speaker 8: So when I'm, I'm ready during the season.
- 32:23Speaker 15: Where do you, where do you, where do you think
- 32:25Speaker 15: you're better this year in your game? Like when you
- 32:27Speaker 15: nitpick yourself, little things, where do you think you've made
- 32:29Speaker 15: a stride forward?
- 32:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:31Speaker 16: Um, I would say first, just having last season to
- 32:37Speaker 16: go off last season, just to, um, I think reps
- 32:42Speaker 16: and time is the most valuable thing for me right now.
- 32:47Speaker 8: Just building off what I did.
- 32:48Speaker 16: I think, like I said, in each offseason, I want
- 32:51Speaker 16: to get bigger, faster, stronger.
- 32:52Speaker 8: I think I did that this offseason.
- 32:55Speaker 16: So just allowing that to elevate my routes and for
- 33:00Speaker 16: me to be better getting out of breaks and stuff
- 33:03Speaker 16: like that. So I try to improve in my overall game.
- 33:07Speaker 16: So I wouldn't say one particular area right now.
- 33:11Speaker 6: What did you do to get bigger, faster, stronger? Just work.
- 33:14Speaker 16: Just work, grinding in the offseason and getting here with
- 33:18Speaker 16: these guys, staying on top of it, sticking to the routine,
- 33:23Speaker 16: the plan that we built for myself to be able
- 33:27Speaker 16: to be ready now.
- 33:30Speaker 6: That's Jackson Smith. And, Jay, when you hear him, he
- 33:32Speaker 6: sounds soft-spoken.
- 33:34Speaker 2: And Julian Love, in fact, was talking about how he's
- 33:36Speaker 2: just this understated, just do-the-work guy.
- 33:39Speaker 7: Well, he's also humble and confident at the same time,
- 33:42Speaker 7: which I think is a very endearing quality to combine.
- 33:46Speaker 6: On the field, he's a trash talker.
- 33:48Speaker 16: I love that.
- 33:49Speaker 2: He gets in opponents' faces and DB's faces, and you
- 33:52Speaker 2: hear him yapping after plays.
- 33:53Speaker 3: But he's smiling, too. That is the way to get somebody.
- 33:57Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 33:58Speaker 2: But he's not just some choir boy who's being quiet
- 34:00Speaker 2: and just going about his business on game days.
- 34:03Speaker 6: He gets after it, and he's yapping.
- 34:06Speaker 2: I can see him through the binoculars doing quite a
- 34:08Speaker 2: bit after plays and pushing the envelope a little bit.
- 34:12Speaker 2: And like you said, Jessamyn, doing that while smiling and
- 34:14Speaker 2: then going for 150 yards to drive a defensive back crazy.
- 34:18Speaker 3: You want to get in someone's head, that is exactly
- 34:20Speaker 3: how to do it.
- 34:20Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 34:21Speaker 2: I don't know that it's hyperbole to say that he
- 34:24Speaker 2: is having a Jerry Rice era right now. The start
- 34:27Speaker 2: of the season, he and Jerry Rice are the only
- 34:29Speaker 2: receivers in NFL history to have 120, I think the
- 34:31Speaker 2: stat was 120 receiving yards and Multiple touchdowns in each
- 34:36Speaker 2: of the first three games. He has six touchdowns in
- 34:38Speaker 2: the first three games. He's on a pace to obliterate
- 34:41Speaker 2: what he did last year. He had 1,793 yards last year.
- 34:44Speaker 2: It was the eighth most in NFL history. For a while,
- 34:47Speaker 2: he was on pace to break Calvin Johnson's record for yards.
- 34:50Speaker 6: In a season receiving.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Whatever, 1,980-some yards. And now he's on pace for beating
- 34:56Speaker 2: that so far this season. So, I mean, this is
- 35:00Speaker 2: Jerry Ricey and stuff. And he is such a different
- 35:03Speaker 2: receiver than Rice, and he's not as big, he's not
- 35:05Speaker 2: as long.
- 35:07Speaker 3: And he's doing it, regardless.
- 35:09Speaker 2: And as often Rice did, too. I covered Rice when
- 35:12Speaker 2: he was with the Oakland Raiders at the end of
- 35:15Speaker 2: his career, before he became a Seahawk. I was actually
- 35:17Speaker 2: covering the Raiders when he went to the Seahawks. But
- 35:20Speaker 2: Rice was different than even Smith and Jigba. One thing
- 35:24Speaker 2: I will say, having covered them both, the body control
- 35:26Speaker 2: was similar. But Smith and Jigba did it even more
- 35:29Speaker 2: than Rice. Rice had a physical mismatch over a lot
- 35:32Speaker 2: of guys with his length. He wasn't a burner, but
- 35:36Speaker 2: he just had more length than Smith and Jigba does.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Smith and Jigba's body control and keeping defenders on his
- 35:41Speaker 2: back and reacting to the ball in the air and
- 35:43Speaker 2: all of that, that is exquisite stuff. And I'm pretty sure, Jess,
- 35:49Speaker 2: I know that they said they want to spread the
- 35:50Speaker 2: ball around and Shahid needs more opportunities and Cooper— When
- 35:53Speaker 2: it's third and five or third and nine, who's Darnold
- 35:56Speaker 2: going to be looking at is the guy who's ripping
- 35:58Speaker 2: the league up.
- 35:58Speaker 3: It doesn't matter if the opponent knows it. That's the
- 36:01Speaker 3: best part because he's still going to fake the catch.
- 36:03Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 36:04Speaker 3: It's amazing.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Yeah, he's off to quite a start. We'll see how
- 36:07Speaker 2: it continues. Another 100-yard game in store, perhaps, against the
- 36:11Speaker 2: 0-3 Chargers. Again, the Seahawks, if they don't turn the
- 36:13Speaker 2: ball over, they're going to win. They turned the ball
- 36:15Speaker 2: over in Washington, they lost. That's where their defense is
- 36:17Speaker 2: right now. 21 points off of turnovers on drive starts
- 36:20Speaker 2: in the Seattle territory when the Seahawks turned it over.
- 36:23Speaker 6: Three times last weekend. Up next, Pox. They're back. The
- 36:27Speaker 6: Kraken are back. And man, I don't know that they've
- 36:30Speaker 6: had an opener where they look better than last night.
- 36:32Speaker 6: 6-1 on the road at Calgary. You'll hear how it happened.
- 36:35Speaker 6: You'll hear Mike Benton's recap.
- 36:38Speaker 2: The captain talking about a bofo opener for the Kraken
- 36:41Speaker 2: who now play Edmonton tomorrow and Calgary in the home
- 36:44Speaker 2: opener on Sunday. Both those games and everything else coming
- 36:47Speaker 2: up right here on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 37:03Speaker 6: Yeah, that's Kraken music last night.
- 37:04Speaker 5: 6-1.
- 37:05Speaker 2: I mean, there were more horns going off than car
- 37:09Speaker 2: alarms around the city yesterday after so many Kraken goals.
- 37:12Speaker 6: Of course, it was on the road, so you couldn't
- 37:13Speaker 6: hear it at Climate Pledge Arena. 6-1 on the road yesterday.
- 37:15Speaker 2: The Kraken begin their NHL season with the win at
- 37:19Speaker 2: the Calgary Flames.
- 37:21Speaker 6: Goals galore.
- 37:23Speaker 2: We're going to talk about a couple things that went
- 37:24Speaker 2: on of local interest, including in Portland and in Philadelphia,
- 37:29Speaker 2: right after you hear the Kraken montage of goals last night.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Everett Fitch, who was a busy man, calling Kraken goals
- 37:36Speaker 2: in the opener.
- 37:38Speaker 17: Here's Winterton.
- 37:39Speaker 2: He's at the line.
- 37:40Speaker 4: Done. Left side.
- 37:41Speaker 12: Shot.
- 37:41Speaker 7: Scores!
- 37:44Speaker 10: A bomb from the blue line, left side for Vince Dunn.
- 37:48Speaker 6: It may have tipped off of something in front. Dunn
- 37:51Speaker 6: will lead the handshake.
- 37:53Speaker 10: Line, and the Seattle Kraken have a 2-0 lead with
- 37:58Speaker 10: 10.18 to play in the first.
- 37:59Speaker 6: Here comes Hancic, two on one. He's got Middleton.
- 38:01Speaker 10: Back to Hancic, left side, and a massive glove save
- 38:06Speaker 10: by Joey Decord. Won the power play. Here's Capo Rocco
- 38:10Speaker 10: on the back side. Freddie Gaudreau scores! Capo Caco from
- 38:16Speaker 10: the left circle, rink wide to Gaudreau.
- 38:19Speaker 4: He was in.
- 38:20Speaker 10: Deep on Dustin Wolfe and the Kraken with 28 seconds.
- 38:24Speaker 6: To play in the first, kick the field goal.
- 38:26Speaker 10: They lead 3-0.
- 38:28Speaker 6: Malayne Lambert chains up to this fourth line.
- 38:30Speaker 4: It'll have been since.
- 38:30Speaker 6: Berkley Catten out there.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Automatically, they are faster as they go hard to the net.
- 38:35Speaker 6: Kapokako sends a pass across the top of the blue
- 38:38Speaker 6: paint to Freddie Goudreau. He puts his team up 3-0.
- 38:42Speaker 6: Here's Jared McCann on the run. Hands it off to Beneers.
- 38:46Speaker 7: Scores!
- 38:48Speaker 10: Matty Beneers, off the drop pass, left circle from Jarrett McCann,
- 38:54Speaker 10: and the Seattle Kraken have a 5-0 lead. Here comes
- 38:58Speaker 10: the Kraken, there's McCann on the far side, his shot on, tipped,
- 39:02Speaker 10: they score! capo caco crashing the net the initial save
- 39:09Speaker 10: was made by wolf he couldn't cover and capo caco
- 39:13Speaker 10: stayed with it he's got his first goal of the
- 39:16Speaker 10: season second point tonight and the kraken back up by five.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Everett fits you now kaninsky last night on our kraken
- 39:25Speaker 2: audio network broadcast of a 6-1 victory the chandler stevens
- 39:30Speaker 2: goal had John Forslund on the TV side going nuts.
- 39:32Speaker 2: He jumped over him, like hopscotched over the defender at
- 39:36Speaker 2: the blue line, and then put a move on the
- 39:38Speaker 2: goaltender at the net for a goal.
- 39:40Speaker 6: Another breakaway.
- 39:41Speaker 3: That's very acrobatic in skates.
- 39:42Speaker 6: That's hard to do.
- 39:43Speaker 3: That's hard to do on flat ground.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Right, exactly. On ice with sharp blades, that was... Yeah,
- 39:49Speaker 2: that was an impressive athletic feat for sure. Mike Benton
- 39:52Speaker 2: was anchoring our coverage pre-post and during the intermissions of
- 39:57Speaker 2: the game. This was his summation of the first game
- 39:59Speaker 2: for the Kraken of the season.
- 40:00Speaker 12: All right, time to put this down here. Headsets down.
- 40:03Speaker 12: Kraken wins 6-1 over the Calgary Flames. And night one
- 40:07Speaker 12: of 84 can't be telltale as far as how a
- 40:09Speaker 12: team is going to perform all season long.
- 40:12Speaker 6: But under the conditions.
- 40:13Speaker 12: of October being pretty sloppy hockey as far as how
- 40:17Speaker 12: teams try to get their game buttoned up. This was
- 40:20Speaker 12: as impressive as it gets. For tonight, you had four players,
- 40:24Speaker 12: multi-point games. Jared McCann, three points. Vince Dunn, three points.
- 40:28Speaker 12: Kid Lyon looked terrific, and he had key goaltending as
- 40:30Speaker 12: well from Joey Decor. Plus also, don't discount the fact
- 40:34Speaker 12: that the Kraken were able to stay out of the
- 40:35Speaker 12: box a lot tonight. Just one time on the penalty
- 40:38Speaker 12: kill looked pretty good for night number one. So against Calgary,
- 40:41Speaker 12: a team that's going to maybe take their lumps, You
- 40:44Speaker 12: take this one, 6-1 your final score, as impressive as
- 40:47Speaker 12: it gets. Now the Kraken have to do this once
- 40:49Speaker 12: again against a very much tougher opponent two days from
- 40:52Speaker 12: now against Edmonton Oilers. But for now, 1-0.
- 40:55Speaker 6: That's a start. It's a Kraken beat Calgary, 6-1.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Mike Benton on the Katy Perry beat there. He's on
- 41:02Speaker 2: some club. I'm sure he's at the 32 Bar and Grill.
- 41:05Speaker 3: California Girls, unforgettable.
- 41:08Speaker 6: Daisy Dukes.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Bikinis on top.
- 41:11Speaker 6: Right down Mike Benton's alley, I'm sure.
- 41:16Speaker 2: In Philadelphia, there's something of interest that people are bringing
- 41:18Speaker 2: up on the text line. The Phillies told manager Don Mattingly,
- 41:23Speaker 2: Dottie Baseball, he's not coming back as manager. He was
- 41:25Speaker 2: the interim manager this year in Philadelphia. He got the
- 41:27Speaker 2: Phillies turned around after a terrible start, got them to
- 41:29Speaker 2: the playoffs. And then they lost game three last night
- 41:32Speaker 2: of the first round wildcard series to the Atlanta Braves.
- 41:35Speaker 2: So their season is over in Philadelphia. And Don Mattingly
- 41:38Speaker 2: is now available. Now, the Phillies reportedly are going to
- 41:40Speaker 2: offer him a job somewhere in the organization, but it
- 41:43Speaker 2: won't be to manage.
- 41:45Speaker 7: That's going upstairs out of respect, kind of one of
- 41:48Speaker 7: those things.
- 41:48Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 41:50Speaker 2: So, do the Mariners go after Donnie Baseball? He's managed
- 41:53Speaker 2: the Marlins. He managed the Dodgers. He managed the Phillies
- 41:57Speaker 2: this year to the playoffs. That would check the box
- 42:00Speaker 2: on experience. Would Donnie Baseball play iPad baseball out here
- 42:03Speaker 2: with Jerry DiPoto?
- 42:04Speaker 7: Or would they let him do Donnie's? Do you think
- 42:06Speaker 7: that they are ever going to relinquish that?
- 42:10Speaker 6: I don't think so. I mean, this is 11 years
- 42:13Speaker 6: of doing it his way. He needs to. He needs to.
- 42:18Speaker 6: Will he?
- 42:19Speaker 2: I don't think so. That's the question. When he says
- 42:22Speaker 2: we've got to change culture, well, that starts at the
- 42:24Speaker 2: very top. And you've got to change the culture of
- 42:28Speaker 2: exit velocities, launch angles, iPad baseball handedness, all that. Let
- 42:34Speaker 2: a manager manage. Let's see what that looks like with
- 42:37Speaker 2: this talent and this pitching staff.
- 42:38Speaker 6: That would be new. Let's see what happens. But to
- 42:42Speaker 6: answer your question, I don't have faith he will do that.
- 42:45Speaker 3: It would be an interesting shift, and they need to
- 42:49Speaker 3: do something.
- 42:50Speaker 6: And quickly, I just have to bring up, do you
- 42:52Speaker 6: see what happened in Portland yesterday?
- 42:54Speaker 4: Oh, no. What?
- 42:55Speaker 2: They hired a new play-by-play announcer to replace the great
- 42:58Speaker 2: Kevin Calabro.
- 42:59Speaker 3: I did not see that.
- 43:01Speaker 6: His name is Braden Bell.
- 43:03Speaker 2: They hired him yesterday to be the new play-by-play broadcaster
- 43:06Speaker 2: for the TV side.
- 43:07Speaker 6: They fired Braden Bell yesterday, the same day they hired him.
- 43:11Speaker 3: No relation.
- 43:12Speaker 4: No.
- 43:13Speaker 6: None at all, in fact.
- 43:15Speaker 2: He was fired, Braden Bell was, after misogynistic and racist
- 43:18Speaker 2: comments surfaced that Bell made on Twitter when he was
- 43:20Speaker 2: a teenager. The tweets were from 2012 and 2013 and
- 43:24Speaker 2: were first spotted by Portland's KGW-TV reporter, Devin Haskins. KTW
- 43:29Speaker 2: was in the process of reporting a story on the
- 43:31Speaker 2: tweets Thursday afternoon. It reached out for the Blazers for comment.
- 43:34Speaker 2: The team replied several hours later that they'd fired Bell.
- 43:38Speaker 7: So they were, one, completely unaware that Evening existed until
- 43:42Speaker 7: a reporter reached out for comment. And two, I mean,
- 43:47Speaker 7: it's always inexcusable. Is that still the same person that
- 43:52Speaker 7: he is?
- 43:52Speaker 2: There's all kinds of questions with that. One is, are
- 43:55Speaker 2: you held accountable for what you do as a teenager?
- 43:57Speaker 2: If all of us were held accountable for what we
- 43:58Speaker 2: did as a teenager, we'd be in trouble for our
- 44:00Speaker 2: adult lives, I would think. But there's also a negligence
- 44:03Speaker 2: on his part for not completely scrubbing that stuff and
- 44:06Speaker 2: making sure there was no trace of any.
- 44:08Speaker 6: Of that stuff.
- 44:08Speaker 3: And also saying it in the first place.
- 44:10Speaker 6: And on top of saying it in the first place.
- 44:13Speaker 5: Yes.
- 44:13Speaker 6: All kinds of yes. But just another in the many
- 44:18Speaker 6: twisted and... He was just hired.
- 44:21Speaker 3: And immediately fired.
- 44:22Speaker 6: Hours after being hired, was fired.
- 44:24Speaker 3: I mean, that's what.
- 44:25Speaker 7: Reporters do, though. They're going to go into your background.
- 44:27Speaker 7: They're going to find out about you. And it wasn't
- 44:29Speaker 7: necessarily that they were looking for that.
- 44:32Speaker 6: They found it.
- 44:33Speaker 2: And honestly, today, reporters, they're so well-versed in social media,
- 44:36Speaker 2: that's the first thing they do. I used to go
- 44:37Speaker 2: to microfiche and look up guys' back. Now they go
- 44:40Speaker 2: to their.
- 44:40Speaker 6: Twitter and TikTok and Snapgram and Instachat accounts.
- 44:44Speaker 9: Right, Belichick.
- 44:45Speaker 6: That's a completely different reporter to what I grew up doing.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Up next, our high school football weekly showcase goes to
- 44:53Speaker 2: the Plateau.
- 44:54Speaker 6: Eastlake and Skyline in a backyard rivalry. That's tonight.
- 44:58Speaker 2: We're going to talk to Skyline coach Peyton Pelour, Eastlake
- 45:01Speaker 2: coach Greg Hurd next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 45:10Speaker 6: As part of our relentless coverage of the NFL. This
- 45:13Speaker 6: is football! This is football!
- 45:15Speaker 1: This is a Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday.
- 45:19Speaker 6: This crowd is going nuts!
- 45:22Speaker 1: Football Fridays are brought to you by Washington's beef farmers
- 45:25Speaker 1: and ranchers.
- 45:26Speaker 6: Beef, it's what's for dinner.
- 45:29Speaker 1: It's Football Friday with Greg Bell on your home for
- 45:33Speaker 1: the NFL.
- 45:34Speaker 6: Sports Radio 93.3.
- 45:35Speaker 4: KJR FM.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Back here on Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday. And
- 45:46Speaker 2: you know every Friday we do the High School Football Showcase.
- 45:49Speaker 2: And this week the game is on the plateau. A
- 45:52Speaker 2: showdown in the King Coat Crown South Division. Eastlake and Skyline.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Skyline 4-0. Trying to unseat Bellevue. Mount Si is undefeated.
- 46:01Speaker 2: And a really crowded impact.
- 46:02Speaker 6: From King Coat.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Some people think that's the best football league in the state.
- 46:06Speaker 2: And Peyton Pelour is the head coach of the Skyline Spartans.
- 46:08Speaker 2: He joins us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline on the
- 46:10Speaker 2: game day. Former Washington State Cougar.
- 46:13Speaker 6: Good morning, sir.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Good morning, guys. Thanks for having me.
- 46:17Speaker 6: Yes, thanks for joining us on a game day.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Well, let me ask you, first-time head coach, how'd you
- 46:22Speaker 2: get into coaching from after your playing career?
- 46:25Speaker 5: It's kind of a natural transition for me.
- 46:30Speaker 4: My dad was a.
- 46:32Speaker 5: Longtime college coach of 17 years and actually, fun fact,
- 46:39Speaker 5: in between stints, college stints, he was also He coached
- 46:43Speaker 5: two years at Skyline, two separate years, 2000 and 2005.
- 46:47Speaker 5: Just hopped on as a DC and went undefeated both
- 46:53Speaker 5: years and won two state titles.
- 46:56Speaker 18: So that was kind of his high school coaching experience.
- 47:01Speaker 5: But I just remember, you know, I kind of followed
- 47:04Speaker 5: in his footsteps ever since I stepped on foot in Pullman,
- 47:07Speaker 5: wore his number, you know, played linebacker.
- 47:13Speaker 4: And then I always knew I.
- 47:17Speaker 5: Wanted to kind of either teach or coach or a
- 47:19Speaker 5: combination of the both, you know, different sides of the
- 47:21Speaker 5: same coin. So I remember talking to Leach and Coach
- 47:24Speaker 5: Grinch and telling him, hey, you know, when I'm done
- 47:26Speaker 5: here and when I'm done with my journey in the NFL,
- 47:30Speaker 5: whatever that looks like, I want to coach. So that's
- 47:33Speaker 5: exactly what I did.
- 47:35Speaker 6: So what was your first job? When were you done?
- 47:37Speaker 2: When did you and what did you make you decide
- 47:39Speaker 2: you weren't playing football anymore? What was your first coaching job?
- 47:43Speaker 5: Oh, well, it's actually kind of awkward. My first coaching
- 47:47Speaker 5: job was at Eastlake High School, who we play tonight.
- 47:49Speaker 4: All right.
- 47:52Speaker 5: My long-term mentor, Coach Don Bartel, who was my defense
- 47:58Speaker 5: coordinator my senior year in high school. He's now the
- 48:00Speaker 5: head coach at Mount Si. He was down there coaching
- 48:06Speaker 5: at Eastlake for a couple years. So I got back. from,
- 48:13Speaker 5: you know, my NFL rookie mini camps and, um, uh,
- 48:17Speaker 5: it was at home kind of tooling my thumbs. I
- 48:21Speaker 5: was like, well, I need to.
- 48:22Speaker 4: I need to work.
- 48:23Speaker 5: I need to stay in shape. I need to stay
- 48:25Speaker 5: around ball. Um, and so I just volunteer coached, um,
- 48:30Speaker 5: coach linebackers. And that was my first year of coaching ever.
- 48:33Speaker 5: And then kind of after, after.
- 48:36Speaker 4: That, you know, um, COVID hit.
- 48:40Speaker 5: I was actually, actually going to go play football in
- 48:42Speaker 5: Europe with Kyle Sweeten, my high school buddy who played
- 48:46Speaker 5: at Eastern Knicks when Doria, we're going to go.
- 48:47Speaker 4: Play in Germany for a summer.
- 48:50Speaker 5: And then COVID hit and canceled all of that canceled
- 48:54Speaker 5: at XFL. So kind of hung up my cleats then
- 48:58Speaker 5: and called coach Leach Papa Leach for a job in
- 49:02Speaker 5: the big leagues.
- 49:04Speaker 2: So you worked at Washington State as a graduate assistant,
- 49:06Speaker 2: or were you on the staff?
- 49:08Speaker 4: No, he was at Mississippi State.
- 49:09Speaker 6: Oh, he had gone to Mississippi State.
- 49:10Speaker 5: Yep, I did two years at Mississippi State.
- 49:13Speaker 4: Um, and then, um, coach Grinch.
- 49:17Speaker 5: Followed Lincoln Riley to USC and, uh, Grinch offered me
- 49:21Speaker 5: a job to, to join them there. So I did
- 49:25Speaker 5: two years at Mississippi state and two years at USC.
- 49:29Speaker 5: And then we all got fired, uh, cause we sucked
- 49:31Speaker 5: on defense. Um, so, um, and by then I was like,
- 49:36Speaker 5: you know, a year and a half, two years in
- 49:39Speaker 5: the portal NIL era, realized, um, I don't like the
- 49:44Speaker 5: whole recruiting thing. I don't like the whole, like, uh, working, uh,
- 49:51Speaker 5: 48 weeks out of the year, seven day weeks, you know,
- 49:54Speaker 5: I want to eventually have a family and see my family. Um,
- 49:59Speaker 5: so I got out, I took that, took that opportunity
- 50:02Speaker 5: to just move home and, um, got my teaching certificate and,
- 50:08Speaker 5: It just so happened that this Skyline job opened up,
- 50:10Speaker 5: so I applied for it, and they were dumb enough
- 50:14Speaker 5: to hire me.
- 50:15Speaker 2: This is former Washington State Cougar Peyton Pelour, the 2025
- 50:19Speaker 2: King Co. Crown Division Coach of the Year, coach of
- 50:21Speaker 2: the Skyline Spartans, who are 4-0 tonight entering their game
- 50:24Speaker 2: of division showdown against Eastlake, where he began his coaching
- 50:27Speaker 2: career in high school.
- 50:29Speaker 6: I love it.
- 50:30Speaker 7: I was going to say it was very unnerving for
- 50:32Speaker 7: me to see you across the sidelines when you were
- 50:35Speaker 7: at USC. I still remember that I came over to
- 50:38Speaker 7: say hi and I got yelled at by the conglomerate
- 50:42Speaker 7: that is USC for even daring to cross that sideline.
- 50:47Speaker 3: You had some good friends there, though.
- 50:49Speaker 7: So, Peyton, I just love to see you thrive as
- 50:52Speaker 7: the daughter of a coach. I have seen the way
- 50:55Speaker 7: that sausage is made, and I totally understand your willingness
- 50:58Speaker 7: to coach just to coach and not be a part
- 51:01Speaker 7: of the agency that has become college football.
- 51:05Speaker 18: Yeah, no, I do.
- 51:08Speaker 5: I mean, my brother-in-law is a college coach. I have
- 51:12Speaker 5: so many friends. Um, of my best friends.
- 51:15Speaker 18: That are coaches. Um, you know, that's, uh, I guess
- 51:23Speaker 18: it was.
- 51:23Speaker 4: A great experience. I learned so much.
- 51:25Speaker 5: I would not be where I'm at without those years coaching.
- 51:29Speaker 5: And playing college football. But yes, I am in so
- 51:32Speaker 5: many ways thankful to just be coaching at the high
- 51:37Speaker 5: school level.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Coach, let's turn your attention to tonight's game and your
- 51:42Speaker 2: team in particular. 4-0, and as I understand it, you
- 51:46Speaker 2: won your first three games with a freshman quarterback.
- 51:48Speaker 6: Is that right?
- 51:48Speaker 2: Now you have a sophomore starting. How have you come
- 51:51Speaker 2: to that in the relative inexperience? And most high school
- 51:54Speaker 2: football teams are starting juniors and seniors at quarterback.
- 51:59Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 51:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 52:00Speaker 4: We are a four.
- 52:01Speaker 5: No, by the skin of our teeth, which is, you know,
- 52:06Speaker 5: it was awesome.
- 52:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 52:07Speaker 5: Freshmen, freshmen, quarterback, winning the game, winning the games at
- 52:11Speaker 5: the four a level is pretty unheard of, you know,
- 52:14Speaker 5: just this time last year, he was playing peewee football.
- 52:16Speaker 4: He's 14 years old.
- 52:19Speaker 5: Last week we played as a claw, our other rivals. And, uh, we,
- 52:27Speaker 5: we ended up going a different direction for, for a
- 52:29Speaker 5: couple of different reasons with a sophomore wide receiver who, um,
- 52:35Speaker 5: played quarterback freshman year and, um, he got to.
- 52:38Speaker 4: Start last week.
- 52:39Speaker 5: And so, uh, we love just handing ourselves lots of adversity,
- 52:43Speaker 5: but I will say our kids, um, our kids don't quit.
- 52:46Speaker 18: They, they got a special, special belief.
- 52:50Speaker 5: Um, you know, we're, we're building something special here at
- 52:52Speaker 5: skyline and, um, you know, we might not be the biggest, fastest, strongest, uh, most,
- 52:58Speaker 5: most talented on the field. I think we've been the,
- 53:01Speaker 5: you know, walking off the bus, the smallest team of every.
- 53:04Speaker 18: Team we've played thus far.
- 53:07Speaker 4: Um, but we're.
- 53:08Speaker 5: Scrappy and, um, you know, we, we play with, with
- 53:14Speaker 5: a lot of love for each other. Um, that's, that's our,
- 53:16Speaker 5: our smart and standard love effort toughness. And, um, our
- 53:20Speaker 5: kids are buying into it more and more with each year.
- 53:23Speaker 5: It's just, it's fun. So I'm, I'm proud of my boys.
- 53:28Speaker 5: This is going to be a real test tonight. He's
- 53:31Speaker 5: like a great team. They got no team that's bigger
- 53:36Speaker 5: than us.
- 53:37Speaker 4: They're talented.
- 53:38Speaker 18: You know, this, like, like you said, this this King
- 53:41Speaker 18: coast schedule.
- 53:41Speaker 4: Is legit this year.
- 53:43Speaker 5: And especially our side of of the division.
- 53:48Speaker 18: Um so it's gonna be a fun night yeah we're
- 53:50Speaker 18: fired up for it all.
- 53:51Speaker 2: Right i gotta ask you who you're starting tonight are
- 53:53Speaker 2: you gonna keep eastlake and greg herd guessing until game.
- 53:56Speaker 18: Time oh we're gonna keep them guessing.
- 53:59Speaker 2: You know coach competitive advantage chasing edges i get.
- 54:02Speaker 4: It yeah No, either way, you know, we're going to
- 54:06Speaker 4: start a young quarterback. How about that?
- 54:08Speaker 2: We'll tell them that. And you would be accurate. You
- 54:11Speaker 2: played at Skyline and you now coached at Eastlake. What's
- 54:14Speaker 2: the Eastlake week like for a Skyline kid? You guys,
- 54:17Speaker 2: your schools are a mile apart along the same street
- 54:20Speaker 2: with Eastside Catholic between the two of you.
- 54:22Speaker 6: What's Eastlake game week like?
- 54:26Speaker 5: Man, I can only imagine what it looks like now
- 54:28Speaker 5: with all the social media and that stuff, you know.
- 54:31Speaker 5: When I played, you know, I got my first iPhone
- 54:37Speaker 5: when I was a senior in high school.
- 54:39Speaker 6: Good for you. Good for your parents.
- 54:41Speaker 4: Yeah. We didn't know.
- 54:46Speaker 5: We knew the Eastlake guys and girls, but back, you know,
- 54:50Speaker 5: we were all.
- 54:50Speaker 4: It was much more divided.
- 54:52Speaker 18: Now everything's so interconnected, so it's... I.
- 54:57Speaker 1: Don't know.
- 54:57Speaker 5: I imagine it's... it's pretty heated. I do know that
- 55:04Speaker 5: my boys have been looking forward to this game for
- 55:06Speaker 5: a long time and I'm sure Eastlake has as well.
- 55:09Speaker 5: And we kind of, we do these, these seven on
- 55:11Speaker 5: sevens in the off season. And you know, there's always some,
- 55:16Speaker 5: some good banter during those nothing crazy, but of course,
- 55:22Speaker 5: you know, tonight's all about same thing.
- 55:25Speaker 18: I told my guys last week, it's all about us.
- 55:28Speaker 4: You know, that we can't be handed any energy.
- 55:32Speaker 5: Any focus to anybody other than us last week, it
- 55:35Speaker 5: was the refs plus this, this week, Eastlake in the crowd,
- 55:39Speaker 5: cause we're at home. And you know, King five pulling
- 55:44Speaker 5: up game of the week, yada, yada. So the focus
- 55:48Speaker 5: has to be on the skyline Spartans for the skyline Spartans.
- 55:51Speaker 5: And that's that's going to be our key to the game.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Peyton Pallor, former Washington State Cougar, head coach of the
- 55:57Speaker 2: Skyline Spartans. Tonight at Spartan Stadium, they take on Eastlake
- 56:00Speaker 2: in a huge King Co. Crown Division battle. The 4-0
- 56:03Speaker 2: Spartans and 2-2 Eastlake. Thanks a lot, Peyton. It's great
- 56:07Speaker 2: to talk to you, and thanks for taking the time
- 56:08Speaker 2: on a game day. I know you're busy and got
- 56:09Speaker 2: other things to do.
- 56:10Speaker 6: Appreciate you. Have a great season.
- 56:13Speaker 4: Of course. I appreciate you guys. Go Cougs.
- 56:16Speaker 18: Go Spartans.
- 56:17Speaker 6: Let's go. Thank you. Peyton Pallor, head coach of Skyline
- 56:21Speaker 6: High School. And now we'll take you to Eastlake.
- 56:24Speaker 2: Coach Greg Hurd joins us from Eastlake High School in
- 56:26Speaker 2: the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Thanks for joining us on a
- 56:29Speaker 2: game day, sir. Let me just start off the top.
- 56:32Speaker 2: The schools are a mile apart. You're on the same street.
- 56:34Speaker 2: They play seven on seven against each other. They probably
- 56:36Speaker 2: grew up in the same lemonade stands and playgrounds. What's
- 56:39Speaker 2: a skyline game week like at Eastlake High School?
- 56:43Speaker 9: Yeah, I think it's a fun, competitive one. Like you said,
- 56:46Speaker 9: these kids are very close to each other as far
- 56:48Speaker 9: as proximity, and a lot of them know each other.
- 56:52Speaker 9: They played against them all throughout junior football. We do
- 56:56Speaker 9: some off-season training stuff with them through some Jervis off-season training.
- 57:00Speaker 6: So it's a heated one.
- 57:02Speaker 9: This is my second year at it. I think that
- 57:04Speaker 9: Peyton knows a little bit more about it just because
- 57:06Speaker 9: he played there, but I'm getting the hang of things,
- 57:09Speaker 9: and we're fired up for tonight. It's a good opportunity.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Skyline's played, as you know, a freshman quarterback for three games.
- 57:15Speaker 2: Then last week against his squad, they throw in a
- 57:17Speaker 2: sophomore quarterback. Are you prepared for two quarterbacks? Are you guessing?
- 57:20Speaker 6: Or how do you scout and prepare for that?
- 57:24Speaker 9: Yeah, so we've seen the film. We've seen a number
- 57:26Speaker 9: of different guys that get into the backfield for them
- 57:30Speaker 9: and kind of try to measure each guy's skill set
- 57:32Speaker 9: of what they, what they do well and things that
- 57:35Speaker 9: we feel like we can take advantage of. So we've
- 57:38Speaker 9: had boats in our game plan and our kids kind
- 57:41Speaker 9: of know the, the changes that maybe we expect to
- 57:44Speaker 9: see if we see, see one guy instead of the other.
- 57:46Speaker 9: So it's kind of one of those deals where you
- 57:48Speaker 9: got to line up and spot the ball and, and,
- 57:50Speaker 9: and play football, but we got an idea of what
- 57:53Speaker 9: we want to do versus each of those guys.
- 57:55Speaker 2: I tried to get you a hint, Greg, and ask
- 57:57Speaker 2: Peyton Pallure, which quarterback he's starting tonight, and he was
- 57:59Speaker 2: too smart for that and didn't give me any competitive disadvantage.
- 58:02Speaker 6: He's going to keep you guessing. You'll find out, I guess, tonight.
- 58:06Speaker 4: Yeah, he's a vet, man.
- 58:07Speaker 6: He's not going to.
- 58:07Speaker 4: Take that cheese.
- 58:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I tried for you.
- 58:10Speaker 7: I tried.
- 58:10Speaker 2: Greg Hurd, he's the head football coach at Eastlake High
- 58:13Speaker 2: School in his second season in Sammamish. He's a Steilacoom
- 58:15Speaker 2: High School graduate. He went and, of course, starred at Eastern.
- 58:18Speaker 2: You probably remember him as an EG. He won a
- 58:20Speaker 2: national championship in FCS and all Big Sky teams. He
- 58:24Speaker 2: had time in camps with the Cowboys, the Seahawks, and
- 58:26Speaker 2: the Bears. I briefly remember you. I think it was
- 58:30Speaker 2: maybe Pete Carroll's second season, 2011.
- 58:33Speaker 6: Was that right? Or maybe even 10 that you were
- 58:35Speaker 6: in the Seahawks camp?
- 58:36Speaker 18: No, it was.
- 58:37Speaker 4: It was 13. 13.
- 58:38Speaker 9: Was that the year they won the Super Bowl?
- 58:42Speaker 6: Yes. Yeah, you had a– and you compelled them.
- 58:45Speaker 9: I don't know if that's true, you know, but it
- 58:51Speaker 9: was a good experience and a good cup of coffee there,
- 58:53Speaker 9: so I enjoyed my time. I learned a lot.
- 58:55Speaker 6: What did you learn?
- 58:56Speaker 2: It was under Pete Carroll. What did you learn? And
- 58:58Speaker 2: that was with Doug Baldwin, and you had some veterans.
- 59:01Speaker 2: I think Jermaine Kearse was just arriving on the scene
- 59:03Speaker 2: at the time, Russell Wilson, a quarterback. Tell us a
- 59:05Speaker 2: little bit about your Seahawks experience.
- 59:08Speaker 9: Yeah, it was, I think the biggest thing was a
- 59:10Speaker 9: stem from Pete and Pete was one of my favorite
- 59:13Speaker 9: college coaches in his time at USC, you know, and
- 59:16Speaker 9: just what they were doing, what they were doing in
- 59:19Speaker 9: his time there as far as, as winning, but then
- 59:22Speaker 9: to see it up close and personal of like, how
- 59:24Speaker 9: like meticulous he was about competition and seeing the guys
- 59:29Speaker 9: there take each and every practice like a game day,
- 59:32Speaker 9: you know, from the way that they prep for meetings
- 59:35Speaker 9: to the way that they warm up and then to
- 59:36Speaker 9: each and every rep and really trying to replay the
- 59:39Speaker 9: game as many times as you can throughout the week.
- 59:41Speaker 9: So when you get there on Sundays or in our
- 59:44Speaker 9: case Fridays, right, you've done it so many times that
- 59:47Speaker 9: it's almost second nature. You're not thinking anymore. It's just,
- 59:49Speaker 9: it's automatic response that happens and, But I think the
- 59:52Speaker 9: competitiveness that you bring out of everyone, and I think
- 59:55Speaker 9: it starts from the top, like the law of the lid, right?
- 59:57Speaker 9: Like he's going to set the lid for what he
- 1:00:00Speaker 9: expects from his players, and they're going to rise up
- 1:00:01Speaker 9: to the occasion.
- 1:00:03Speaker 6: This is Greg Hurd. He's the head coach of Eastlake
- 1:00:05Speaker 6: High School.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: They're playing Skyline tonight, a huge backyard rivalry up on
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: the plateau. Our high school football-focused game of the week
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: here on 93.3 KJRFM. You were a five-season head coach
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: at Auburn Riverside High School before Eastlake hired you before
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: the 2025 season. And before that, you were at Stillicum
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: High School. I believe you coached Emeka Buka before he
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: went to Ohio State. What got you into coaching, and
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: how did you get back to your alma mater to
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: begin that?
- 1:00:31Speaker 9: Yeah, I think just want to stay connected to the
- 1:00:34Speaker 9: game of football. Football has been the most impactful thing
- 1:00:37Speaker 9: in my life with just the relationships that I've built
- 1:00:40Speaker 9: throughout this, the people that I've met. And so giving
- 1:00:43Speaker 9: back to the game was definitely something I wanted to do,
- 1:00:45Speaker 9: especially being a teacher. Getting me back to Silicon, there
- 1:00:50Speaker 9: was a number of guys who coached me when I
- 1:00:52Speaker 9: was there that were still there. And then actually a
- 1:00:55Speaker 9: guy that I grew up with, his younger brother, he
- 1:00:57Speaker 9: got the head coach job there. and hit me up
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: immediately to get me back over there and to link
- 1:01:02Speaker 9: back up with, uh, with our crew, man, we had
- 1:01:04Speaker 9: a really solid, solid coaching staff of a bunch of
- 1:01:07Speaker 9: still looking guys and kind of just saw him back
- 1:01:09Speaker 9: into the youth of that community. So that's what, that's
- 1:01:12Speaker 9: what got me there. But coaching kind of was always
- 1:01:14Speaker 9: in the plans once I decided I was going to
- 1:01:15Speaker 9: get into education.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: Talk to me about coaching the 2026 teenage boy. You
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: could do a thousand things now, or you could just
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: be on your iPhone and social media and chat rooms
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: or All the things that teenagers do. There's a lot
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: of people and a lot of parents who are afraid
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: of football, frankly, because of head injuries and soccer and
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: hiking and cross country. All the things that teenagers can
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: do in the fall. What have you found about the
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: dynamic of that and what are the challenges of coaching
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: these days?
- 1:01:47Speaker 9: Yeah, I think that one that's always an overarching thing
- 1:01:50Speaker 9: is people think I'm going to get hurt with football,
- 1:01:52Speaker 9: whether it just be an injury or being the head injuries.
- 1:01:55Speaker 9: And what I say to that is one of my friends,
- 1:01:58Speaker 9: Chase King, who I played with at Eastern Washington, said
- 1:02:01Speaker 9: something to me.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: It's like around.
- 1:02:02Speaker 9: The time of COVID that just kind of resonated.
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: With me a lot.
- 1:02:05Speaker 9: And when it spoke to the game of football, he said,
- 1:02:08Speaker 9: I'm more concerned of who I would be had I
- 1:02:10Speaker 9: not played football rather than what can stem from injury.
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: A potential head injury. And I just think it talks
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: about the impact.
- 1:02:16Speaker 9: That it had on his life from the relationships they've built,
- 1:02:19Speaker 9: the hard work to learn how to be a team player,
- 1:02:21Speaker 9: learn how to be selfless and learn how to work
- 1:02:23Speaker 9: with a large group of people towards a common goal.
- 1:02:26Speaker 9: I think it goes a long way as far as
- 1:02:28Speaker 9: coaching the modern day teenager. I mean, I think that it's,
- 1:02:31Speaker 9: it's a fun one.
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: It's a ride. Like I look back at things that.
- 1:02:34Speaker 9: My high school coaches did and like, I think their
- 1:02:36Speaker 9: jobs were a lot easier than mine are now. Um,
- 1:02:39Speaker 9: And the thing that I try to focus on most
- 1:02:42Speaker 9: as we talk to our kids about enjoying the process
- 1:02:44Speaker 9: so much, and I have to be that exact same way, right?
- 1:02:47Speaker 9: Like these kids are going to go from level one
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: to level 10 over the course of one season, right?
- 1:02:52Speaker 9: It's going to take the off season, it's going to
- 1:02:53Speaker 9: take four years. So just trying to be engulfed in
- 1:02:56Speaker 9: this process and then try to just grow young adults
- 1:02:58Speaker 9: like we've got here. we've got a bunch of young
- 1:03:00Speaker 9: men on this team. We have a young lady on
- 1:03:02Speaker 9: this team. And my hope is that they could take
- 1:03:04Speaker 9: something from their time under my coaching. That's applicable to
- 1:03:08Speaker 9: every other aspect of the life, whether it mean them
- 1:03:10Speaker 9: showing up on time, whether it mean them, you know,
- 1:03:13Speaker 9: being selfless as a teammate, but just taking something for you,
- 1:03:16Speaker 9: that's going to be well extend well beyond your playing days.
- 1:03:20Speaker 9: But the X's and O's part of it. I mean,
- 1:03:21Speaker 9: if the game's expanded, it's a lot more fun. Now
- 1:03:23Speaker 9: it's different. And just with huddle and everything and having
- 1:03:26Speaker 9: access to kids seeing video. There's a lot of really
- 1:03:30Speaker 9: good things about the game now. I think it's a
- 1:03:31Speaker 9: lot safer than it's ever been with just the change
- 1:03:33Speaker 9: in tackling and the approach that people have taken with that.
- 1:03:37Speaker 9: I think football is in a really good space right now,
- 1:03:41Speaker 9: and I enjoy coaching a ton.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: I was going to ask you which players you'd like
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: me to highlight, but you just gave me an entree there.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: Your young lady, how did she come out? In what
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: position does she play? And what dynamic is that for you?
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: You've never coached or played with a woman.
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: I don't guess.
- 1:03:56Speaker 9: I've, I've actually, so she's on our team. She's a freshman.
- 1:03:59Speaker 9: She plays linebacker and play center for us.
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: She's a starter.
- 1:04:02Speaker 9: She's been playing football since she's been younger. I know
- 1:04:05Speaker 9: she loves the game and she gives her, she gives.
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: Her all out there.
- 1:04:08Speaker 9: And like I said, she's a starter on her team
- 1:04:09Speaker 9: and she does pretty well in holding her own. I've
- 1:04:11Speaker 9: coached another girl before in my time at Auburn Riverside too.
- 1:04:15Speaker 9: She was a kicker for us, but yeah, I think, again,
- 1:04:17Speaker 9: just creating spaces where people can, you know, come out
- 1:04:20Speaker 9: and express themselves and do things that they want to do.
- 1:04:23Speaker 9: And we support them in every way of that. But, yeah,
- 1:04:26Speaker 9: my first time at Riverside was an interesting one and
- 1:04:29Speaker 9: a learning one. So where this one felt, it felt
- 1:04:31Speaker 9: natural to have Savannah coming out for the team and
- 1:04:35Speaker 9: then having her help lead that C team.
- 1:04:37Speaker 18: For us, too.
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: Jessamyn McIntyre, my producer, coach's daughter, is clapping here in
- 1:04:41Speaker 6: the studio, Greg.
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: Well, I just love it because I'm like, oh, here
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: we go. It's a kicker.
- 1:04:45Speaker 7: I'm sure it's a kicker. And then, you know, just
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: like when I work in sports, people always are like,
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: probably a sideline reporter, which I do also. But I
- 1:04:53Speaker 7: also have another job, which I'm very good at.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: And I love to hear that when you said linebacker
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: and center, I'm like, oh, let's go.
- 1:05:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: In a rivalry game, Coach Greg Hurd of Eastlake playing
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: Skyline tonight right up the road at Skyline Stadium.
- 1:05:13Speaker 6: It's always emotional. The first five minutes are just off
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: the hook.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: How do you get guys to play within themselves, stay
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: within your game plan and just block out the noise?
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: What's the teaching coaching points of that?
- 1:05:26Speaker 9: Yeah, I think the one thing that I've always tried
- 1:05:28Speaker 9: to harp on, and I approach kind of rivalry games
- 1:05:31Speaker 9: the same as, like, senior night and homecoming, right? There's
- 1:05:34Speaker 9: a lot of exterior things that are happening, but all
- 1:05:37Speaker 9: of those things are happening because of the main thing.
- 1:05:39Speaker 9: So keeping the main thing the.
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: Main thing, right?
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: Like.
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: It's awesome.
- 1:05:42Speaker 9: We get this chance at the game of the week.
- 1:05:44Speaker 9: It's awesome. We've got this rivalry. It's awesome when you
- 1:05:47Speaker 9: have a homecoming. But all that stuff is centralized around
- 1:05:49Speaker 9: the football.
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: Game, right?
- 1:05:51Speaker 9: Like none of that happens without the football game. So
- 1:05:53Speaker 9: just keeping kids present in that. And then we approach
- 1:05:56Speaker 9: it like any other way, like any other game. You know,
- 1:05:58Speaker 9: I think that I talked about the importance of beating
- 1:06:02Speaker 9: your rivals just because you get those bragging rights for
- 1:06:04Speaker 9: a year, right?
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: And I always.
- 1:06:06Speaker 9: When I was at Riverside, we had two rivals there.
- 1:06:07Speaker 9: I told them, hey, if you only win one game
- 1:06:09Speaker 9: per year, it's got to be a rivalry game.
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: But I think that we prepared our.
- 1:06:13Speaker 9: Kids mentally and physically for this opportunity to come out
- 1:06:17Speaker 9: and just play within ourselves. We're not running anything schematically
- 1:06:20Speaker 9: different than we ran the last four weeks. We're not
- 1:06:23Speaker 9: doing anything different pregame than we've done the last four weeks.
- 1:06:26Speaker 9: I think that we've built a good routine for our kids.
- 1:06:28Speaker 9: to allow them to go out and play free and loose.
- 1:06:31Speaker 9: So we're not tense. It's just another environment. It's just
- 1:06:33Speaker 9: going to be a more fun one when you go
- 1:06:35Speaker 9: out there and ball and do your thing.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: Coach Greg heard from Eastern Washington Seahawk for a time
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: under Pete Carroll in a camp. Now he's gone back
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: to Eastlake high school, started coaching and still come high
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: school was head coach at Auburn Riverside.
- 1:06:48Speaker 6: Now Riverview.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: Now he is at Eastlake high school tonight for a
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: huge showdown with skyline and the King co coach.
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: Crown Division.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Thanks, Coach Hurd, and thanks for what you do for
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: our student-athletes and our youth and leadership and giving back
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: to the community. I know it's a lot of time,
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: and I appreciate what you do. Thanks a lot for
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: joining us.
- 1:07:08Speaker 9: Yeah, thanks for having me. I appreciate it.
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: Go Wolves.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: Good luck tonight to the Wolves up at the Spartans
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: at Skyline High School. That's our high school football showcase
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: for this week. We do it every week. We try
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: to showcase two coaches in a game of the week.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: to give you a little glimpse into what's going on
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: in high school football around Washington. We do a lot,
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: of course, on the Seahawks and the Huskies and the Cougs. Yeah,
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: there's a lot going on in football and a lot
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: of time spent with these guys like Greg Hurd and
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: Peyton Pallure. Up next, your chance to be a part
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: of the show on the 49451 Tacoma Dodge Texan or
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: your talkbacks.
- 1:07:38Speaker 6: Jessamyn will play those back next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:07:51Speaker 14: Old Price reminds me of old Tiki Barber when he
- 1:07:55Speaker 14: was young and he was running and he was fumbling.
- 1:07:57Speaker 8: The ball all the time.
- 1:07:58Speaker 7: And then they fixed him up by getting the ball
- 1:08:02Speaker 7: high and tight.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: See if he can get a hold of him.
- 1:08:05Speaker 8: Talk to him about that, get that straightened out.
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: It'll be just fine.
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: I can promise you Thomas Hammock is doing just that.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: High and tight is part of the culture there in
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: Seahawks and was before Thomas Hammock. It was under every
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: running back coach I've ever covered in the NFL for
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: that matter.
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: Remember the movie, the program.
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: Yes. Yeah.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: Maybe they need to do a little, is that Omar Epps?
- 1:08:29Speaker 6: I think it was. Yeah.
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: That's a good reference.
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: Thank you very much. Christy Swanson.
- 1:08:33Speaker 6: That's a way back pool actually.
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:08:36Speaker 6: It was like nineties, wasn't it?
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: My parents put me in front of good movies.
- 1:08:42Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: Maybe a little bit of the program.
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: They are working on it.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: No, they're not making them sleep with a football or
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: anything like, high school or junior high kids might have
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: to do.
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: Chuck asked me that one day. I don't think Jed
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: Arien Price is sleeping with a football. I may be wrong, though.
- 1:08:57Speaker 7: I mean, that's a little overkill. I just think that
- 1:09:01Speaker 7: might get in your head a little bit. A lot
- 1:09:03Speaker 7: of really good feedback on the high school showcase that
- 1:09:08Speaker 7: we do every Friday.
- 1:09:08Speaker 6: 425 said, I've said it before, but Bears repeat, thank
- 1:09:12Speaker 6: you for doing this.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: I played at Issaquah where there were no, when there
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: were no high schools on the plateau, no other high schools,
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: to get to hear them And where they're at now
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: is priceless.
- 1:09:21Speaker 6: Thank you for that.
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: I love it.
- 1:09:23Speaker 7: And I mean, whether or not you are entrenched in,
- 1:09:26Speaker 7: and it's usually, you know, people who are parents or
- 1:09:29Speaker 7: coaches in the high school districts, whether or not you
- 1:09:33Speaker 7: are in that world, it's still awesome because you know
- 1:09:36Speaker 7: these guys. I mean, I covered eight years of Peyton Puller.
- 1:09:40Speaker 7: I know him very well. I've watched his entire career
- 1:09:44Speaker 7: through playing and then have followed what he's done after
- 1:09:47Speaker 7: the fact. And then obviously Coach Hurd has a similar journey. Where,
- 1:09:52Speaker 7: you know, he was in NFL camps and then to
- 1:09:55Speaker 7: go back to high school and just hear what these
- 1:09:57Speaker 7: guys have done at a very high level and what
- 1:09:59Speaker 7: they choose to do now is very important in my mind.
- 1:10:03Speaker 6: You heard him.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: He could have stayed in the college cycle. He was
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: Mississippi State, USC. He started high. His first job was
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: at the SEC. And he got out of college for years.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: The NIL and the transfer portal and players getting paid
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: and all that. He didn't want to do that. He
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: said he wanted to teach and coach. And now he's
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: doing it at Skyline High School, his alma mater. Keith, 2-5-3.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: Home game for Capitol tonight. Home game versus Capitol tonight
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: for Pennensula. Go Seahawks. The Pennensula Seahawks it is. Appreciate
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: the high school football coverage. Appreciate you appreciating it.
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Big one down south tonight. Graham Kapowson. We featured them
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: in the very first showcase game. Remember that against Lake Stevens?
- 1:10:42Speaker 6: Well, They've gone on. They're now 3-1.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: They're the third-ranked team in the state. And now they
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: get to Olympia High School tonight where first-year coach Kerry
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: Nagel has an undefeated Olympia Bears. That's a game tonight.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: Graham Kapowson at Olympia. That's a pass against run. Olympia
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: runs the ball. Throwback running the ball.
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: And Graham Kapowson spread.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: D1 athletes and receiver and quarterback.
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: That's the big one in the south tonight. Graham Kapowson, Olympia.
- 1:11:12Speaker 6: I'm going to be at Shoreline High School, by the way.
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: Nice. Up in my neck of the woods.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Shorecrest against Montlake Terrace. Montlake Terrace is 3-1, so is Shorecrest.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: It might be a pretty good game. I haven't been
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: to that stadium in a while. I'm officiating that one
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: with the Flatman crew.
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:11:28Speaker 6: Don Mattingly. Oh, no, it's time to get money, isn't it? Yeah,
- 1:11:32Speaker 6: let's go. $ 1, 000.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the.
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: $ 10, 000 grand prize. It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: day feels lucky.
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: Fact or Fiction is on. Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 1:11:54Speaker 6: You're like, yeah, okay. I'm like, what?
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: No, not automatically.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Money, money, yeah. $ 1, 000 is your chance. Thanks to the
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, our fact or fiction game.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: How it works is every day, every weekday, 735, 1135, 235,
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: and 335. We make a pick. You make a call.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: You text in to 49451. If you agree with us
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: on our pick, you text fact.
- 1:12:18Speaker 6: If you disagree, you text fiction. If you are correct.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: You get entered in a drawing to win $ 1, 000. We'll
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: draw that on Monday. One winner each week. You only
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: have to win once. But it behooves you to play
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: multiple times because the more chances you win, the more
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: times you win, I should say, the more chance.
- 1:12:32Speaker 6: You have to win $ 10, 000.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: At the end of the contest December 11th, Army-Navy Friday
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: is when it ends. Whoever has the most wins between
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: now and December 11th will win $ 10, 000 from the Lucky
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Eagle Casino and Resort.
- 1:12:46Speaker 6: Okay, I'm going to the NFL. A little departure for
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: me from the colleges. I went Army.
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: You need to have a break.
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: I went Navy, Air Force earlier. Now we're going to
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: the NFL. The 2-1 John Harbaugh Giants. They're home underdogs
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: to the 1-2 Arizona Cardinals.
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: That jumped out at me.
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: Since Sartor Jackson Dart went out to a season-ending knee injury,
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: quarterback Jameis Winston hasn't led the Giants' offense to a
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: touchdown in seven quarters. I was going to take the
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: under for this, but then I saw the Giants are
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: home favorites. He's going to do it against the Cardinals.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: Winston is on Sunday. Cardinals have given up 36 of
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: the 49ers and 31 to the Seahawks the last two weeks.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: Winston's got a bigger incentive now to perform because J.J.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: McCarthy just arrived from Minnesota in the trade, looking over
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: his shoulder. I think Winston has a big game. I
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: think the Giants beat the Cardinals rather handily, a touchdown
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: or more. So give me those 2.5 points. Giants plus
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: 2.5 at home over the Cardinals, if you agree. Text
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: FACT to 49451. If you disagree, text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: You have 12 minutes. And then at 2.35, Ian and
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: Finesse will do it again. Dave Softy-Muller and Dick Fane
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: will do it again at 3.35. And then Monday, we'll
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: draw the winner. And we'll do that every week until
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: December 11th. Giants plus two and a half at home
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: over to the Cardinals. If you agree, text FACT to 49451.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: If you disagree, text FICTION to 49451. So I'm going
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: back to your area, the Giants.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: I like it. I like it.
- 1:14:07Speaker 6: We'll see.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: I think a winner.
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: Came out of my, it was a, what was it, Giants-Panthers?
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: Giants-Titans.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: Oh, it was the Titans.
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: They won 12-7.
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: I was fiction, but.
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: Giants offense has been limping. They get six points against
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: the Rams. They beat Titans 12-7.
- 1:14:24Speaker 6: I get it. But the Cardinals defense, I think the
- 1:14:27Speaker 6: Giants score points and win that one.
- 1:14:28Speaker 16: Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: Back to the Tacoma Dutch text line, 49451. The Seahawks, JSN,
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: the 425 says, JSN reminds me of Heinz Ward, the
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: former Steeler wide.
- 1:14:38Speaker 6: Receiver, just dominating while crap-talking. He didn't say crap. And
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: a big, goofy grin on his face the entire time.
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: It's the best way to do it.
- 1:14:45Speaker 6: Yeah, Jessamyn was talking about how he smiles throughout trash-talking.
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: During the game.
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: I love it so much.
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: Instead of skipping around, let me go to other Seahawks.
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: There are other Seahawks ones here.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: A couple people commented about the Portland Trailblazers firing the
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: play-by-play guy.
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: The play-by-play guy for tweets, racist, misogynistic tweets that he
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: did when he was a teenager.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: Yeah, that one flew under the radar for me. I
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: don't know why I didn't see that.
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: I saw that yesterday. I was like, whoa.
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: Taking a social media break, but yeah.
- 1:15:15Speaker 6: 253 said, what do you mean?
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: That's a good idea, by the way.
- 1:15:19Speaker 6: 253, what do you mean it's never acceptable? Every single
- 1:15:21Speaker 6: race in the world makes fun of other races.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: Give me a break. Context matters. Well, I don't know
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: if acceptable. There is context to the fact that he
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: was a teenager. 206, ruin a guy's life over a
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: comedy made over a decade ago as a kid.
- 1:15:34Speaker 6: So wrong. Lighten up, people. If that's the worst thing
- 1:15:37Speaker 6: in his history, he's a model citizen.
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm trying to find... Whoops, sorry about that. Yeah, there's... Oh, yeah.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: It's hard that Anyone would be held accountable for what
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: they did as teenagers. But it's also hard to have
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: a perception that you're endorsing that. And it's also irresponsible
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: of someone to not cover their tracks and make sure
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: that isn't.
- 1:16:07Speaker 7: If you had social media as a teenager... You've got
- 1:16:10Speaker 7: to torch it, man. Once you get a professional job,
- 1:16:13Speaker 7: it doesn't matter what it could be. It could be like,
- 1:16:15Speaker 7: pepperoni sucks. It could be anything. You probably should just
- 1:16:19Speaker 7: cut everything.
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: Just start over.
- 1:16:21Speaker 6: 19 before 20, you should just cut.
- 1:16:22Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:16:23Speaker 7: Regardless of how offensive it might be or not, I'm
- 1:16:25Speaker 7: just saying that people just, you know, it's not going
- 1:16:28Speaker 7: to be relevant to your career. And in this profession,
- 1:16:31Speaker 7: social media is a part of your job. And so
- 1:16:34Speaker 7: I would just start.
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: A whole new one.
- 1:16:37Speaker 6: Aunt Jessamine is giving you advice out there.
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: I'm a great aunt.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: If you're under 30 years old, just scrap your social
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: media account from before 20.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: Start over. Yeah.
- 1:16:47Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, he clearly didn't because they still show
- 1:16:51Speaker 7: up under his Braden Bell play-by-play, PXP, play-by-play. And so
- 1:16:56Speaker 7: he just changed his name and kept the account. So, yeah,
- 1:17:01Speaker 7: that is, these are not great. These are not great.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: 206, hey, do you think Dallas will ever move out
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: of the NFC East.
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: Into a more regional division?
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: They might be able to have a little more success
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: like the South if they flip position with Carolina.
- 1:17:16Speaker 6: Since I was a kid, people talked about this.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Of course, when I was a kid, Atlanta, the Falcons
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: were in the NFC West.
- 1:17:22Speaker 6: It wasn't geographical.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds were in the National
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: League West. But yeah, since I was in the 70s,
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: they were talking about Dallas moving out of the NFC East,
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: but it hasn't.
- 1:17:34Speaker 6: No, I don't think so.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: And I frankly think that the NFL likes having the
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: Giants and the Eagles in Washington as two times a
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: week season against Dallas for the ratings in those huge
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: East Coast Atlantic markets. That's my opinion for TV ratings.
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: Up next, the mayor of Maple Valley. Ian Furness tells
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: us what's on his show. You've got about eight minutes
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: still to text in. Factor Fiction, Giants plus two and
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: a half at home against the Cardinals. If you think
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: the Giants will either win that game outright or not
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: lose by three or more points, text FACT to 49451.
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: If you disagree, text FICTION to 49451. Ian tells us
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: what he's got going next. I think it's Danny O'Neill
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: Day and Greg Cosell Day, if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:18:11Speaker 3: It's a big day.
- 1:18:12Speaker 6: It is on 93.3 KJRFM. Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre.
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: Beginning of the show, end of the show.
- 1:18:21Speaker 6: I don't like doing it anyway, so I won't do
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: it again.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: Washington State Beef Commission Football Friday, now joined by Ian Furness,
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: the mayor of Maple Valley.
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: Hello, sir.
- 1:18:28Speaker 6: Hello, sir. What do you got for me? You got
- 1:18:30Speaker 6: something for me. I do, actually. This morning, something called
- 1:18:33Speaker 6: Axios Seattle. Axios is a website.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: Based in Arlington, Virginia, started by former Politico reporters, mostly
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: in the news and business and the business of sports.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: They interviewed... Vinod Khosla, the new Seahawks owner.
- 1:18:49Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:18:50Speaker 6: Owner, the front man.
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: And they asked him about, would you ever move the Seahawks?
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: Or could you envision the Seahawks being here for Seattle forever?
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: And he said, never say never. He said, he rhetorically asked,
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: could I see the Seahawks being here for the next
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: 500 years? well, I just got here as owner. I'm
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: going to learn some things. I just got here. I'm paraphrasing,
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: but Lumen Field is.
- 1:19:20Speaker 10: Great.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: Operation's great. I'm going to sit back and learn. I'm
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: not used to owning and running a football team. Three
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: months ago, I wasn't even thinking of buying an NFL franchise.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: But Ian, you came in here and showed me this.
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: Your point, of course, is Anything short of an unequivocal
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: no in this town is going to raise some eyebrows.
- 1:19:42Speaker 14: Well, I just don't– I'm just going for it, looking
- 1:19:47Speaker 14: at it right now. Yeah, it wasn't like this was
- 1:19:51Speaker 14: a 10-year plan, a combination of passion, interest, and convenience
- 1:19:53Speaker 14: of having something that's an hour and 20-minute flight. I
- 1:19:55Speaker 14: wouldn't buy a team in Philadelphia or Washington, and the
- 1:19:57Speaker 14: 49ers weren't going to be for sale anytime soon. But
- 1:20:03Speaker 14: when you have the opportunity– I will never say never.
- 1:20:11Speaker 14: Will this team be in Seattle 500 years from now? Okay,
- 1:20:12Speaker 14: that's ridiculous. But I have no current plans to change
- 1:20:15Speaker 14: anything about the team, including the coach, president, operation, or
- 1:20:17Speaker 14: Lumen Field. It all functions well. So, like, this is
- 1:20:22Speaker 14: maybe a– here's where I'll give the guy a break.
- 1:20:25Speaker 14: This may be a very naive person in terms of
- 1:20:28Speaker 14: dealing with media.
- 1:20:30Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: Not thinking that to him might be a throwaway comment
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: that people are going to latch onto and go, whoa.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: Because the money thing is no current plans to change
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: anything about the team. including the coach, president, operation, or Lumenfield.
- 1:20:41Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:20:42Speaker 14: But I'll never say never. It's just something you should
- 1:20:45Speaker 14: ever say in this city, like you said, in this
- 1:20:47Speaker 14: city specifically.
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: Now, to revisit, the Seahawks lease at Lumenfield runs into 2032,
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: and then the team has 10-year options.
- 1:20:56Speaker 6: On top of that.
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: That's the facts of the matter.
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: Cozley, if he wanted to do anything, can't do anything
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: until at least 2032, and most likely 2042 if he
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: enacts at least the first option. Now- That lease doesn't
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: preclude him from remodeling Lumen Field, which they also talk about.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: And he says, well, I'm here to learn first.
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:21:14Speaker 6: And we've talked in the past about revenue, ways they
- 1:21:16Speaker 6: could increase revenue there.
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: Sure.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: But yeah, to answer the question, Axios wrote it as
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: Melissa Santos is one of the reporters of this Axios story.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: Do you know her? Just of her and from other people.
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: I don't know her personally.
- 1:21:32Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:21:33Speaker 6: Dan Primack is the co-byline of the story.
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: And Axios says, when asked if he would formally commit
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: to keeping the Seahawks in Seattle for the long term,
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: Kozla was somewhat noncommittal. I will never say never, Kozla
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: told Axios' Dan Primack during a phone.
- 1:21:48Speaker 6: Interview this week. Ian swallowing like that was bitter.
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: Speechless. I.
- 1:22:01Speaker 6: Your point is he should probably be a little more careful.
- 1:22:03Speaker 6: Just be better. Yeah.
- 1:22:06Speaker 14: Here's the thing. This is what happens. Listen, it drives
- 1:22:11Speaker 14: me nuts at times when I have media relations people
- 1:22:17Speaker 14: standing over me if I'm doing an interview. But there's
- 1:22:21Speaker 14: a reason that a guy at that level needs someone
- 1:22:24Speaker 14: next to him. There's a guy, there's a reason that
- 1:22:26Speaker 14: Mike McDonald should never do what he did with Graham
- 1:22:28Speaker 14: Bensinger without having the Seahawks PR person.
- 1:22:31Speaker 6: One of them there.
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: There's a reason John Schneider only talks to us in
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: the media, the local media, twice a year.
- 1:22:36Speaker 6: Because there's, you, yes, protect the brand. Um, You're going
- 1:22:43Speaker 6: over there today. I am.
- 1:22:44Speaker 18: Okay.
- 1:22:45Speaker 14: Can you give me a call later? We'll have an
- 1:22:48Speaker 14: open segment whenever you decide to chime in.
- 1:22:49Speaker 16: Okay.
- 1:22:50Speaker 18: All right?
- 1:22:50Speaker 14: Because I'm sure this will be a topic today, not
- 1:22:52Speaker 14: for Mike as much, but for the organization.
- 1:22:55Speaker 6: This is something.
- 1:22:56Speaker 14: That they need to get Chuck or somebody out there
- 1:22:59Speaker 14: in front of you guys today.
- 1:23:00Speaker 6: I doubt they will. I doubt they will, too.
- 1:23:02Speaker 14: But this fan base does not deserve this blank.
- 1:23:09Speaker 6: We've been through enough. That's a bad look for that
- 1:23:12Speaker 6: new owner today. Bad luck. But have fun over there.
- 1:23:17Speaker 6: I can tell you've lived here a little while.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: Anyone who's lived here before 2008 understands why Ian Furness.
- 1:23:22Speaker 14: Is up there. I'll counter my own pissed-offness. in the
- 1:23:28Speaker 14: first segment, because I think there is a reason we
- 1:23:30Speaker 14: can take a deep.
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: Breath and relax.
- 1:23:32Speaker 14: But I'll let you... How's Julian Love? How's Jadarian Price? Oh,
- 1:23:37Speaker 14: by the way, are you going to move the team?
- 1:23:39Speaker 14: You've got a busy day coming up, Greg Bell.
- 1:23:41Speaker 6: Thanks. It's just what I was looking forward to. What
- 1:23:43Speaker 6: do you have today? I thought the Blazers had the
- 1:23:45Speaker 6: worst last 24 hours. Apparently not. Talk about that. Hired
- 1:23:49Speaker 6: and fired.
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: Man, it's a rainy day out here.
- 1:23:52Speaker 6: There's a job opening in Portland.
- 1:23:54Speaker 14: Twitter has been a really rough spot for a few
- 1:23:57Speaker 14: people lately. I'll just leave it at that. We've got
- 1:23:59Speaker 14: to do this show. Greg Cosell coming up. Danny O'Neill
- 1:24:01Speaker 14: coming up. Rob Ryan coming up. Factor Fiction Booze News
- 1:24:05Speaker 14: all coming up.
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: And the Renton Outpost may be coming up, too. I
- 1:24:08Speaker 6: might have to call in.
- 1:24:09Speaker 17: I will be having an open segment whenever you call.
- 1:24:12Speaker 17: I'll be heading to Seahawks now. Find out if Jadarian
- 1:24:14Speaker 17: Price is playing. If Julian Love, I think he's playing.
- 1:24:17Speaker 17: And if the Seahawks do respond to what Ian is
- 1:24:18Speaker 17: all fired up about and rightly. So, Ian's up.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: Next on a Washington State beefing championship football Friday at 235.
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: He's got another factor, Fichton Chance. Greg Bell, Jess McIntyre,
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: thanks for doing it all week. We'll do it again
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: Monday after the Seahawks and Chargers and the Kraken home
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: opener against the Flames on Sunday coming up on 93.3 KJRFM.
