- 0:01Matthew Chapter 9. Let's pray, our Father, who's in
- 0:07heaven, holy is your name, your Kingdom come, and your will be
- 0:12done on earth just as it is in heaven.
- 0:15Give us today Our Daily Bread. Forgive us for our many
- 0:19trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
- 0:23Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
- 0:27For thine is the power of the Kingdom and the glory forever
- 0:32and ever and ever. Lord, we love you.
- 0:35Lord, we worship you. Lord, we are asking for your
- 0:39touch today. Lord, we're asking for clarity.
- 0:41We're asking, Holy Spirit for you to be the teacher and the
- 0:44guide. Guide us through the mind of
- 0:47Christ. Guide us through the thoughts of
- 0:51this world and this guide us through all the thoughts of the
- 0:55Father. Guide us through what he thinks
- 0:58about this world and what he thinks about this time and this
- 1:01hour. And Lord, how everything that
- 1:03we're reading is relevant for today.
- 1:05God, I pray that we don't gloss over.
- 1:07I pray that we don't check out. I pray that we don't just
- 1:10approach you God with a half heart.
- 1:14I pray that we're engaged. I pray that we are completely
- 1:18sold out. I pray that we are locked in.
- 1:20I pray that we are listening attentively, God expectantly,
- 1:25knowing that you're going to heal from on high, knowing that
- 1:28you're going to give us clarity. You're going to give us the mind
- 1:33of Christ. You're going to give us the
- 1:36thoughts that you possess. Father, lead us in heavenly
- 1:39places, lead us in paths of righteousness.
- 1:42We're acknowledging you today. So direct our steps.
- 1:45Father, we ask of you, in the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.
- 1:51Let's start in verse one. And he entered into a ship, and
- 1:55passed over, and came into his own city.
- 1:59So this is Jesus returning to Capernaum. 2 And behold, they
- 2:04brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed.
- 2:07And Jesus, seeing their faith, said unto the sick of the palsy.
- 2:11Son, be of good, cheer your sins, be forgiven you.
- 2:16So here we know that this is relegated to the story of the
- 2:19people that were bringing the paralytic on the mat, and they
- 2:23opened up the roof and they lowered him down because there
- 2:27were so many people there to learn from Jesus.
- 2:29And Jesus, seeing this man in his state, he sees that not only
- 2:34was he paralyzed, which was an outer issue, but on the inside
- 2:42he had felt as if it was his own doing, his own fault.
- 2:47Perhaps his faith or his sins were keeping him from being
- 2:50healed. And he sees the faith of the
- 2:53friends here. And what a word for us today.
- 2:55Some people don't even have the faith to come to the Lord, but
- 3:01we must bring them to the Lord. We must pick them up.
- 3:04We must bring them before the Lord and ask the Lord to do
- 3:08mighty wonders and work miracles in their lives so that they will
- 3:13believe and see. God knows who belongs belongs to
- 3:15him, and he is not willing that any should perish. 3 And behold,
- 3:21certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man
- 3:25blasphemes. So these were thoughts, these
- 3:27were not even words that were articulated.
- 3:30And here Jesus is reading their minds because he's all God, and
- 3:35Jesus knowing their thoughts there.
- 3:38Why do you think evil in your hearts?
- 3:43Jesus asks them. 5 for whether it's easier to say your sins be
- 3:49forgiven you or to say arise and walk.
- 3:52So here everyone is believing in a miracle, but instead Jesus
- 4:00flips the script and he says your sins are forgiven.
- 4:04He sees that the real need here is not a miracle.
- 4:08The real need here is for this man to know that he is forgiven.
- 4:14And that is the power for you and for me to know that we're
- 4:18going to stand before Almighty God.
- 4:21He might leave you in the wheelchair.
- 4:23He might leave you sick, He might leave you with the cancer,
- 4:28He might leave you with the loss of the loved one and the broken
- 4:32marriage and the job loss. He might leave you in that
- 4:36situation. But we need to know that the
- 4:38greatest thing that Jesus could ever do for us is to cover us in
- 4:44His blood, to cover us in the pure blood of the Lamb, and that
- 4:52God Almighty is going to welcome us into eternity, not because of
- 4:57anything we have done, but because of the sacrifice of
- 5:01Jesus Christ on the cross. That is the only way that we're
- 5:06going to get there. And Jesus knew that this man
- 5:09needed to know that all of his sins were forgiven.
- 5:13And that is what we need to know, that not one single sin
- 5:18that we have ever committed, are committing, or will commit will
- 5:23be counted against us when we stand before Almighty God.
- 5:26What a thought, friends. That is what we need to know.
- 5:30That is what we stand on is the work of the cross.
- 5:33And that is why what Jesus did is so powerful that God will not
- 5:39remember our sins. Praise the Lord. 6:00 but that
- 5:47you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive
- 5:51sins. Then he said to the sick of the
- 5:55palsy, arise and take up your bed and go to your house.
- 6:03Wow. Not only did Jesus forgive him
- 6:07of all his sins, but Jesus healed him and told him to get
- 6:11up and rise and walk. Can you even imagine the stir
- 6:17once the people saw this paralyzed man get up and walk?
- 6:227 And he arose, and he had, he departed to his house.
- 6:26Look at that. Look at how God healed him.
- 6:30Look at how Jesus, just with the Word, healed him. 8 But when the
- 6:35multitude saw it, they marvelled, and they glorified
- 6:37God, which had given such power unto men.
- 6:41This was Jesus Christ and this is Jesus and he is all God and
- 6:48he's all man. And the people are still kicking
- 6:51the tires trying to figure out who he is.
- 6:54They're still trying to figure out is he the long-awaited
- 6:57Messiah or is he just a wonder worker?
- 7:01Is he just a worker of miracles? Is he some kind of magician?
- 7:05What is all of this? And there are so many that are
- 7:10only attracted to God for what they can get out of him.
- 7:15They are more attracted in the presence than in His presence.
- 7:19And we need to sit and we need to know that God is.
- 7:24We need to know that Jesus is the Messiah.
- 7:26We need to know that we know that we know that He is the
- 7:30long-awaited 1 and we can put all of our trust and faith in
- 7:34Him and receive our forgiveness and receive our healing friends.
- 7:419 And as Jesus passed forth from there, he saw a man named
- 7:45Matthew sitting at the receipt of custom.
- 7:50And he said unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and he followed
- 7:53him. This is the Matthew who wrote
- 7:56the book that you're reading right now.
- 7:58This was a tax collector, and he would have been a social outcast
- 8:04of the Jews. They would have hated this man
- 8:06because he had turned his back on the Jewish heritage.
- 8:10He had joined forces with the Romans and he was exacting their
- 8:16money from them. And he was such a traitor to the
- 8:22Jewish nation. And here Jesus, the friend of
- 8:26sinners, the friend of thieves, the friend of publicans, he's
- 8:34calling Matthew unto himself. And he knew that Matthew was to
- 8:38be a disciple before he ever even called him. 10 And it came
- 8:42to pass, as Jesus sat at me in the house, behold, many
- 8:47publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his
- 8:51disciples. So here Jesus is sitting down to
- 8:56dinner with all the tax collectors, and what's going to
- 9:00happen? 11 When the Pharisees saw it,
- 9:03they said unto his disciples, Why does your master eat with
- 9:07publicans and sinners? They marveled at how Jesus was
- 9:12not afraid to sit down. He was never afraid that he
- 9:17would be overtaken by the sinners.
- 9:20He could sit, He was comfortable in the presence of sin, but he
- 9:24never ever allowed the sin to defile him.
- 9:27He never allowed the sin to come into him, and he never condoned
- 9:33the sinners, but he was quite comfortable sitting with them.
- 9:38Praise the Lord for Jesus. Look at how Jesus flips the
- 9:42script. Look at how Jesus, he's not
- 9:45afraid of sinners and he has the harshest things to say towards
- 9:49the religious, and it's no different today.
- 9:52Friends 12:00 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto him,
- 10:00They that behold, do not need a physician, but they that are
- 10:05sick, he's saying that the healthy do not need a doctor.
- 10:13It is the sick who need a doctor.
- 10:16And friend, before you came to know the Lord, you were the
- 10:21sickest of them all. I was the sickest of them all.
- 10:27This is a worthy saying that Christ came to save sinners, of
- 10:30which I was the chief. We need to know where we've come
- 10:36from. That way, when we see people in
- 10:38their sin, we do not see them in that sin.
- 10:43We see them as children of God. And we need to extend the gospel
- 10:48of Jesus Christ unto all people, and have the discernment to know
- 10:55when to stop casting our pearls amongst swan. 13 But go you, and
- 11:01learn what that means, that I will have mercy and not
- 11:06sacrifice, For I have not come to call the righteous, but
- 11:09sinners to repentance. So here you can see that the
- 11:16Lord, He is referencing Hosea, he's referencing how the Lord
- 11:23does not desire sacrifice, but he desires mercy.
- 11:28And then he tells us that he hasn't come for the righteous,
- 11:32but it comes for sinners to turn to repentance.
- 11:36And we can see that when we become self-righteous, we've
- 11:39missed the mark, friends, when we think that it is our
- 11:43righteousness that gets us in, we think that it's our behavior
- 11:46that gets us in. We've missed the mark.
- 11:49God came to save sinners, of whom I am the chief. 14 Then
- 11:56came to him, the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the
- 12:00Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?
- 12:05So here John had a very strict set of how he was the
- 12:14forerunner, and he had these disciples who tried to mimic his
- 12:19approach. And they're kind of somewhat
- 12:21thrown off by the fact that Jesus's disciples were eating
- 12:27and drinking. And perhaps they thought to
- 12:32themselves, why is it that we are afflicting our bodies and
- 12:39your disciples are having a feast and a fun time?
- 12:44They were with Jesus. Anytime you're with Jesus, it's
- 12:47nothing but joy. Joy and more joy, friends.
- 12:52It is a joyous journey. It's a good life if we'll let it
- 12:57be. And yes, we should be burdened
- 12:59for the lost, but we cannot think that it is our burden to
- 13:05bear. We bring it to him.
- 13:07His yoke is easy, friends. 15 And Jesus said unto them, Can
- 13:14the children of the bride chamber mourn as long as the
- 13:17bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the
- 13:20bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then they shall fast.
- 13:25So he's saying there's coming a time when Jesus leaves to go to
- 13:30sit at the right hand, that we are called to the fasting, and
- 13:34some things only go out by fasting and prayer.
- 13:37But when we are with him in the wedding feast, it's nothing but
- 13:40dancing and joy. It is nothing but our It's for
- 13:45our wholeness and completeness. And we should have the joy of
- 13:50the Lord, which is our strength. 16 No man puts a piece of new
- 13:55cloth onto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it
- 14:00up takes from the garment, and the rent is made worse.
- 14:04So he's saying that you cannot take an unshrunken patch and put
- 14:09it on a piece of clothing, for it'll RIP and the RIP will be
- 14:13even worse, and he's going to tell us what he means by all
- 14:16this. 17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles, else the
- 14:22bottles break and the wine runs out and the bottles perish.
- 14:25But they that put new wine into new bottles and both are
- 14:29preserved. Sometimes Jesus has to come in
- 14:31and flip over the tables. He has to drive out the money
- 14:35changers. He's doing a new thing.
- 14:37And yes, God does not change, but sometimes the systems that
- 14:43men implement get overrun and overtaken by greed and get
- 14:50overrun and get overtaken by power and get overrun and get
- 14:54overtaken. And you can see it even in our
- 14:57day, you can see churches closing left and right.
- 15:00And it's because we've made it more about the bylaws and it's
- 15:05more about man's doctrine than it is, is about what does the
- 15:08Bible say? That's the number one thing we
- 15:11need to ask ourselves. What does the word of God say?
- 15:14And that is the law, that is the promises, that is the grace.
- 15:19That is the encapsulation of everything that we need to know
- 15:23is what does the Bible say? And we make a huge error
- 15:27whenever we throw out any scripture of the Bible when we
- 15:31try to say that that doesn't mean this or it doesn't mean
- 15:34that or that was added to it, or this was attracted or needs to
- 15:38be taken out, or it's the Bible plus something else.
- 15:41We make a major error whenever we are talking about anything
- 15:46else other than what the Bible says.
- 15:49And that is our North Star. That is our compass.
- 15:54And that is what will guide us home, friends. 18 While he spoke
- 15:59these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and
- 16:03worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead, but
- 16:07come and lay your hand upon her, and she shall live. 19 And Jesus
- 16:12arose, and he followed him, and so did his disciples. 20 And
- 16:16behold, a woman which was diseased with an issue of blood,
- 16:2012 years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment.
- 16:2421 For she said within herself, If I may touch the his garment,
- 16:29I shall be whole. 22 And Jesus turned him about, and when he
- 16:34saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort, your faith has
- 16:39made you whole. And the woman was made whole
- 16:42from that hour. 23 And when Jesus came into the ruler's
- 16:46house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, he
- 16:49said unto them, Give place, for the maid is not dead, but
- 16:53sleeping. And they laughed him to scorn.
- 16:5625 But when the people were put forth, he went in and took her
- 17:00by the hand, and the maid arose, And the fame here of went abroad
- 17:06into all that land. Imagine this, imagine this
- 17:11story. Imagine how this leader of the
- 17:14synagogue, he comes in and he says that his daughter is dead,
- 17:21but just come into his house and put his hand on her and she'll
- 17:25live. And imagine Jesus, he's moving
- 17:28through the streets and he's doing what he's being asked.
- 17:31And this lady, 12 years, she has had the infirmity of this issue
- 17:36of blood. And we learned later that she
- 17:39spent all her money on doctors and physicians and nothing can
- 17:43help her. And she just thinks within
- 17:45herself, all she has to do is touch the hem of his garment and
- 17:49she will be healed. And Jesus turns to her and he
- 17:53gives her the affectionate title daughter.
- 18:00It's the only time that he uses that.
- 18:03And he says daughter, and he calls this woman that.
- 18:07And she and her faith made her well in the issue of blood.
- 18:12Stop. And look at how these hired
- 18:17mourners come in. And they look the part, but deep
- 18:23down, they're just there to make some money.
- 18:27And look at how they turn from mourning quickly to laughing.
- 18:31And you can see that they're not very sincere.
- 18:35And you can see how Jesus has this healing power and he raises
- 18:39the dead to life. And he can do that for you,
- 18:42friend. He did it for me, and his fame
- 18:47spread all across that land. 27 And when Jesus departed there, 2
- 18:52blind men followed him, crying and saying, Thou son of David,
- 18:56have mercy on us. This is another messianic title.
- 19:0028 And when he was coming to the house, the blind men came to
- 19:03him. And Jesus said unto them,
- 19:05Believe you that I am able to do this?
- 19:08And they said unto him, Yes, Lord, another messianic title.
- 19:12This Lord, this I deny. They're calling him the Christ,
- 19:17the Anointed One, the Son of God, the Son of David, the Son
- 19:21of man Praise the Lord for all of these messianic titles
- 19:25pointing us that Jesus is the fulfillment of the law. 29 Then
- 19:30touched he, their eyes, saying, According to your faith, be it
- 19:34unto you. So there it is.
- 19:36The currency that we operate out of is this faith. 30 And their
- 19:40eyes were open, and Jesus straightly charged them, saying,
- 19:44See that no man knows it. For his fame was spreading out
- 19:49across the land, and he could hardly contain the crowds that
- 19:52were pressing in on him. 31 But they, when they were departed,
- 19:58spread abroad his fame, and all that country. 32 And they went
- 20:02out. Behold, they brought to him a
- 20:04dumb man possessed with the devil, And when the devil was
- 20:08cast out, the dumb spoke. And the multitudes marvelled,
- 20:13saying it was never so seen in Israel. 34 But the Pharisee said
- 20:19he cast out devils through the Prince of the devils.
- 20:22Imagine this. Look at this blaspheming that
- 20:27the Pharisees are doing towards the Son of God.
- 20:31Look at how this possession of the demon, he had made this man
- 20:38deaf and dumb. He wasn't able to speak.
- 20:41And you can see later whenever Jesus goes into the tombs and he
- 20:47asks, what is your name? And he says, my name is Legion,
- 20:50for we are many. You can see that part of the
- 20:53exorcism of the demoniacs was for them to be able to speak the
- 20:58name of whatever devil, whatever demon had come in.
- 21:02And here this man was so dumb he couldn't speak that this demon
- 21:08had caused him not to speak. And Jesus, here he works around,
- 21:14he doesn't need the name. All he does is say, come out and
- 21:18he comes out, praise the Lord. And look at how the Pharisees,
- 21:22they were so incredibly incensed against Jesus.
- 21:26And Jesus was good, and Jesus was amazing and great, and Jesus
- 21:31was lovely and Jesus was pure. And they hated it because he was
- 21:36breaking down on all of their religious systems.
- 21:39He was bringing them low. He was causing all of their
- 21:44financial gain to be threatened. And here they can see it
- 21:52happening and they see the crowds and they're incensed
- 21:55against him. And they say it is by the Prince
- 21:58of the devils that he drives out devils.
- 22:02Imagine that. Let's see what Jesus has to say.
- 22:0535 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in
- 22:10the synagogues and preaching the gospel of the Kingdom, and
- 22:13healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 And
- 22:18when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on
- 22:22them, because they fainted, and they were scattered abroad as
- 22:26sheep, having no shepherd. 37 Then said he unto his disciples,
- 22:33The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few. 38
- 22:39Pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send
- 22:44forth laborers into his harvest. Think about it friends, The
- 22:49harvest is plenty, but the workers are few and Jesus is
- 22:53moved with compassion. And you can see that during this
- 22:59time there is this uptick of hostility towards Jesus.
- 23:06And it's no different in our day.
- 23:08It's no different in our hour. There's so many people that are
- 23:11incensed against Christians. They're incensed against the
- 23:14church. They're incensed against the
- 23:17name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the long-awaited 1,
- 23:21the Messiah. They're incensed against the
- 23:25scriptures. Why?
- 23:30Because they have made a love decision for this world.
- 23:33Friends, they're delusional and they still have the blindfold on
- 23:41and we need to remember where we came from.
- 23:43We were once them and we need to have this compassion that you
- 23:48see Jesus have. He could have called down
- 23:52legions of angels and He could have completely did away with
- 23:58the Romans. He could have, but this was what
- 24:01was going to bring him the most amount of glory.
- 24:06Give him his due praise today. Fall down on your knees and
- 24:11worship Him, for He is worthy. Worthy is the King, He is the
- 24:18Lord of Lords. He is holy, holy, holy.
- 24:26I hope that you've been blessed by this chapter here.
- 24:28I know I sure have. I'm praying for every single one
- 24:32of you. I love you, so does God.
- 24:39I'll see you back here tomorrow. God bless you.
