Speaker 1: Hey everyone, this is welcome back to The Bad Hire,
• 0:57
Speaker 1: The Show with the Best Stories about the Worst employees.
• 1:00
Speaker 1: Happens if we have maybe twenty eight shows under our
• 1:04
Speaker 1: belt and we have heard some really crazy stories. I've
• 1:08
Speaker 1: got two special guests today with me. Today I'm joined
• 1:12
Speaker 1: by Randall Wilson. He's the chief operating officer over at
• 1:15

  Speaker 2: it's cool.
• 1:20
Speaker 1: And Jamie Francos, who she's a vice president of Global
• 1:23
Speaker 1: Partnerships and Alliance at Fairly. I think you were just
• 1:26
Speaker 1: in Europe or something?
• 1:27
  Speaker 2: Were you?
• 1:27
Speaker 3: I was in Paris?
• 1:28
Speaker 1: Oh, okay, Alsterdam, I saw something. But she's a Global
• 1:33
Speaker 1: Partnerships and Alliance affairently.
• 1:35
Speaker 3: Thanks for having me. We're having some fun, yeah for sure.
• 1:39
Speaker 3: All right, let's get into it.
• 1:41
Speaker 1: You guys know the drill. You know, we'd love to
• 1:44
Speaker 1: get your stories. We'd love for you to submit them in.
• 1:47
Speaker 1: We want you to do that. It could be a
• 1:48
Speaker 1: good it could be a bad story about interview, story
• 1:51
Speaker 1: about higher story at og flame ount, a first day
• 1:54
Speaker 1: blow up, whatever it is. And then if you've got
• 1:58
Speaker 1: a good higher story, well you know we love that
• 2:01
Speaker 1: too because I love the redemption stories. So, uh, you
• 2:04
Speaker 1: know you can send that in. Now, what we'll do
• 2:05
Speaker 1: is at the end of the year, you know we're
• 2:09
Speaker 1: gonna give We're gonna pick one story is the best
• 2:11
Speaker 1: story of the year, and we're gonna award that person
• 2:14
Speaker 1: ten thousand dollars for the best story of the year.
• 2:17
Speaker 1: So go ahead, take your shot, send us a story
• 2:21
Speaker 1: you can You can either send us a story of
• 2:23
Speaker 1: this written, or you can ask to be do a
• 2:27
Speaker 1: segment on the show where you'll meet with a producer.
• 2:29
Speaker 1: They'll interview a segment with you where you can tell
• 2:31
Speaker 1: the story yourself. Those are always super fun, and then
• 2:36
Speaker 1: you know, we encourage you to kind of get in line.
• 2:38
Speaker 1: I think we have eighty people in the pipeline trying
• 2:40
Speaker 1: to trying to get on the show like that, so
• 2:43
Speaker 1: and we're getting to them as fast as we can.
• 2:44
Speaker 1: So but yeah, you know, sign up for it all right?
• 2:48
Speaker 2: Or were we must be one of the fortunate few
• 2:50
Speaker 2: that got that in front of the line of eighty
• 2:53
Speaker 2: other people. So, oh no, there's not.
• 2:57
Speaker 1: They're not hosts, so we don't.
• 2:59
  Speaker 2: You know.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: What we found is so much easier to coordinate these
• 3:03
Speaker 1: segments than to try to get people to time everything perfectly.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: And then you know what, uh, cross talking reaction stuff
• 3:12
Speaker 1: doesn't work as well when it's uh there's somebody on
• 3:16
Speaker 1: you know, over the phone or you know, on zoom
• 3:19
Speaker 1: call or whatever. Yeah, it's not it's hard for them
• 3:22
  Speaker 1: to get.
• 3:23
Speaker 3: Who's the ultimate judge of the story, who gets to
• 3:25
Speaker 3: pick the best I.
• 3:26
Speaker 1: Think the team will pick Okay, yeah, for sure. So
• 3:30
Speaker 1: I have one particularly I like so far right. It's
• 3:34
  Speaker 1: the the it's a cat story. So it's it's well,
• 3:42
Speaker 1: a guy that gets on Zoom calls and team calls
• 3:45
Speaker 1: and he's laying in bed shirtless with his cat and
• 3:48
Speaker 1: he's on the company call. It's a great story and
• 3:52
Speaker 1: it just resonated with me, I think because we we
• 3:57
Speaker 1: we had an occurrence of that.
• 3:59
Speaker 2: Yeah what they didn't in bed shirtless?
• 4:03
  Speaker 1: Yes, wow, smile.
• 4:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll try to top this today.
• 4:09
Speaker 1: We watched this, you know when you came out of uh,
• 4:12
Speaker 1: when you came when COVID first started and we started
• 4:15
Speaker 1: moving everybody around and got them home. I think we
• 4:18
Speaker 1: sent everybody home on March seventeenth or March nineteenth, and uh,
• 4:23
Speaker 1: I just I just I just remember, you know that
• 4:27
Speaker 1: everybody was so like everything was you know, dressed, they
• 4:30
Speaker 1: still wore their gear. Yeah, they were dressed up, hair done,
• 4:34
Speaker 1: makeup on. You know, everybody looked sharp that first six
• 4:37
Speaker 1: first for six months, and.
• 4:39
Speaker 3: Then it all went downhill.
• 4:40
Speaker 1: Started so that it was like, well the.
• 4:42
Speaker 3: Hair no longer no, or they just go off camera.
• 4:45
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, let's they turned their camera in their their
• 4:49
Speaker 2: bare chest and laying in the bed.
• 4:51
Speaker 1: Yeah, and so it goes all the way to the end,
• 4:55
Speaker 1: and I don't know, I think it's funny. And you know,
• 4:58
Speaker 1: you just see this slow to claw line of like, okay, well,
• 5:02
Speaker 1: you know they don't dress up anymore. Now they don't.
• 5:04
Speaker 1: They don't really wash their hair or do their hair anymore,
• 5:07
Speaker 1: and you know, the makeup is long gone. And so
• 5:10
Speaker 1: the end result is we're turning the camera off. Right,
• 5:13
Speaker 1: So now you're you're doing an event with no one's
• 5:16
Speaker 1: onto it. And I'm like, as a leader, I'm trying
• 5:18
Speaker 1: to like, how do you How am I going to
• 5:19
Speaker 1: build and shape a culture of people who won't put
• 5:22
Speaker 1: their face? You know, you don't even know what people
• 5:24
Speaker 1: look if we hire somebody, don't even know what they
• 5:26
Speaker 1: look like, because if they come on and see that
• 5:28
Speaker 1: everyone turning the camera off, they're just like right back off.
• 5:31
Speaker 2: There's your opportunities to make some bad hires right there. Yeah.
• 5:34
  Speaker 2: On camera only.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: Yeah, so we make I think we have a rule,
• 5:38
Speaker 1: don't we do? Always have your Yeah, camera's got to
• 5:43
  Speaker 1: be on.
• 5:43
Speaker 3: I'm a camera on girl too, Yeah, so you have
• 5:45
Speaker 3: to you have to see them.
• 5:47
Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't even own client calls or prospect calls
• 5:50
Speaker 2: will come on with cameras, and sometimes the other hand
• 5:53
Speaker 2: feels a little obligated to turn their cameras on a point.
• 5:56
Speaker 2: You're like, everybody there is just turn their camera on camera.
• 6:00
Speaker 1: It's kind of a way to make sure they're paying attention. Right,
• 6:03
Speaker 1: just like dozed off and you.
• 6:04
Speaker 3: Feel like you're talking to a wall, if not just
• 6:07
Speaker 3: talking to the space.
• 6:08
Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, So today is pretty cool because you know,
• 6:14
Speaker 1: Jamie does is heavy into social media screening and her
• 6:18
Speaker 1: company is heavy in the social media screening. It got
• 6:20
Speaker 1: great technology and so it does that and she's just
• 6:26
Speaker 1: you've been in it for for a while now, for yeah,
• 6:29
Speaker 1: since the beginning, you know of of really when this
• 6:33
Speaker 1: became a thing, I think I remember when it first
• 6:37
Speaker 1: started that, you know, it was there was just a
• 6:41
Speaker 1: lot of resistance in the industry around like is this
• 6:45
Speaker 1: is this legal? And every lawyer from every c for
• 6:50
Speaker 1: can't be doing that stuff. No, no, no, no, no.
• 6:52
Speaker 2: Our lawyer had a fit. Yeah he did it. Do
• 6:55
Speaker 2: not put any scoring on there, do not let them
• 6:57
  Speaker 2: do this.
• 6:57
Speaker 1: Best you do you just not do this. Just don't
• 6:59
Speaker 1: do this, you know, And we're.
• 7:01
Speaker 2: We're going to review every one of these before they
• 7:03
Speaker 2: let them send them out to the clients, Like, well,
• 7:05
Speaker 2: it's a social media screen, so dude.
• 7:07
Speaker 1: Is public information public posts? They just laid it up there.
• 7:12
  Speaker 1: It's like I accident, I went to a speech and
• 7:14
Speaker 1: heard them talk, and I heard them talk.
• 7:16
Speaker 3: You know, that's what else are we going to see
• 7:17
Speaker 3: people without their shirts on? I mean, come on, that's true.
• 7:22
Speaker 1: Anyway, So you've been you've been in ad a long time,
• 7:27
Speaker 1: and so today we're going to dedicate the show to
• 7:30
Speaker 1: nothing but social media blow up stories. And so we've
• 7:33
Speaker 1: got you know, there's a couple of famous ones where
• 7:36
Speaker 1: we're going to talk about that. I actually did a
• 7:38
Speaker 1: post about one of these, uh the other day where
• 7:41
Speaker 1: I talked about it, but we'll talk about it here
• 7:44
Speaker 1: on this on this show. And these these should be uh,
• 7:46
Speaker 1: these should be interesting. And so before we dive back
• 7:49
Speaker 1: into the chaos on the bad Hire, this episode is
• 7:52
Speaker 1: brought to you by b Checks. Hiring shouldn't feel like
• 7:55
Speaker 1: rolling the dice. Background checks should come with great tech,

Speaker 1: Protect your team, protect your reputation, protect your sanity. Go
• 8:26
Speaker 1: to bchecks dot io. That's bc h ex dot io.
• 8:32
Speaker 1: Why don't I get started at twenty thirteen? All right,
• 8:44
Speaker 1: I guess social media was rolling in twenty thirteen. Yeah,
• 8:47
Speaker 1: and it's prom Yeah. So in twenty thirteen, the head
• 8:51
Speaker 1: of PR for one of the biggest media companies in
• 8:55
Speaker 1: the world boarded a flight with one hundred and seventy
• 9:00
Speaker 1: Twitter followers. That's all. She had, one hundred and seventy
• 9:02
Speaker 1: Twitter follows, which is kind of crazy because she's the
• 9:06
Speaker 1: head of PR at a bare media firm. Yeah yeah, yeah.
• 9:13
Speaker 1: She landed eleven hours later and she was fired. So
• 9:18
Speaker 1: she had already been terminated by the time she landed.
• 9:21
Speaker 1: So her name was Justin Soako and she's the senior
• 9:24
Speaker 1: director of corporate Communications at a company called IAC and
• 9:29
Speaker 1: that's the company behind match dot com and Vimeo and
• 9:34
Speaker 1: The Daily Beast. So her entire job, her entire job
• 9:38
Speaker 1: was like managing the company's reputation, all right, and so
• 9:42
Speaker 1: before she posted, before she boarded, she posted a tweet.
• 9:46
Speaker 1: It was offensive, it was racist, and it begins and
• 9:52
Speaker 1: it had been sitting in her public feed like for years,
• 9:56
Speaker 1: so I guess she reposted it. Anyway, she got on
• 10:02
Speaker 1: on an eleven hour flight and there was at the
• 10:06
Speaker 1: time no internet access, so you know, it used to
• 10:08
Speaker 1: be when you flew there was no Wi Fi, so
• 10:11
Speaker 1: you were just kind of down, you know, unless you
• 10:14
Speaker 1: use that little phone in the back of the seat.
• 10:16
Speaker 1: So you know, she's flying, uh, an eleven hour flight,
• 10:20
Speaker 1: no internet access, and had absolutely no idea what was
• 10:24
Speaker 1: happening while she was in the air. Right, So within
• 10:28
Speaker 1: two hours of her making that post, her tweet was
• 10:32
Speaker 1: the number one trending topic on Twitter worldwide. It just
• 10:39
  Speaker 1: gets me.
• 10:39
Speaker 3: Can you imagine, and she's just sitting saying, you know.
• 10:42
Speaker 1: Like firing something off while he's sitting in the tarm
• 10:45
Speaker 1: you know, you're waiting.
• 10:48
Speaker 2: She must have had a famous follower at least one
• 10:51
Speaker 2: it retweeted or just made it comments. Yeah, frustrats. I mean,
• 10:56
  Speaker 2: she's had to.
• 10:58
  Speaker 1: Know.
• 10:59
  Speaker 2: And so.
• 11:01
Speaker 1: If she becomes a number one trending topic, celebrities were
• 11:05
Speaker 1: celebrities were piling on and a hashtag called has justin
• 11:12
Speaker 1: Justine landed yet? Hashtag has Justine landed yet?
• 11:16
Speaker 2: Started? In her post, she does. She tell them she
• 11:19
Speaker 2: was getting ready to get on a plane and thought
• 11:22
Speaker 2: she would reshare an old tweet.
• 11:23
  Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know, but she had I
• 11:27
Speaker 1: read hours, I read the bas I read the I
• 11:30
Speaker 1: actually read the post a couple of weeks ago, but
• 11:32
  Speaker 1: I can't remember the details other than I know, I
• 11:34
Speaker 1: know it was not a good one.
• 11:36
Speaker 2: And so so you're not going to share what she posted?
• 11:39
  Speaker 1: I don't. I don't want to say it because I
• 11:42
Speaker 1: wasn't got exactly right. He doesn't want to get her
• 11:46
Speaker 1: hashtag has justin has Justine landed yet? Is trending globally
• 11:51
Speaker 1: and I A c had an issue had to issue
• 11:54
Speaker 1: a crisis statement. So the company she hasn't even started
• 11:58
Speaker 1: work for yet they've hired her, but she I haven't
• 12:00
Speaker 1: showed up for her first day, it was trend had
• 12:05
Speaker 1: to issue a crisis statement explaining that their own head
• 12:09
Speaker 1: of communication was unreachable on an airplane. Someone physically went
• 12:13
Speaker 1: to the Cape Town Airport just to document the moment
• 12:16
Speaker 1: she landed. This is crazy. She was fired before the
• 12:21
Speaker 1: day was over i AC condemned the tweet publicly, repeatedly
• 12:25
Speaker 1: in front of the entire Internet. The head of communications
• 12:28
Speaker 1: became their biggest communications crisis. And the thing that still,
• 12:33
Speaker 1: you know, gets me is this This was all in
• 12:37
Speaker 1: her public feed, not to her friends, not.
• 12:41
  Speaker 2: Hidden, not private.
• 12:43
Speaker 1: It's that's a crazy thing about these social social media screen.
• 12:47
Speaker 2: Pick this up if it was public, yep, yeah, are
• 12:49
  Speaker 2: you good?
• 12:50
Speaker 1: Yeah? So for years, a basic social media screen before
• 12:55
Speaker 1: she was ever hired would have found out this in minutes.
• 12:58
Speaker 2: Right, So think about all the social media posts she
• 13:01
Speaker 2: had had doing as a previous as a as a
• 13:05
Speaker 2: young college student getting ready to start your career and
• 13:11
Speaker 2: not realizing that a post from three or four years
• 13:14
Speaker 2: ago is that was a is going to make a
• 13:17
Speaker 2: big difference in your in your next ten to fifteen
• 13:19
Speaker 2: years and what your dream job is.
• 13:21
Speaker 1: Fifty of HR leaders and hiring managers admit to not
• 13:27
Speaker 1: hiring someone based on something they saw in their Yah,
• 13:30
Speaker 1: we social media. We have clients think about that.
• 13:32
Speaker 2: Yeah, we have clients that do social media screening, but
• 13:35
Speaker 2: a lot of them think that they're detectives as well,
• 13:38
Speaker 2: and they'll go out and start looking on different popular
• 13:42
Speaker 2: social media websites, but nothing that a deep dive on
• 13:46
Speaker 2: a social media screen will of course too, because you
• 13:49
  Speaker 2: just don't know.
• 13:50
Speaker 3: That's when you do it that way too. That's hard
• 13:52
Speaker 3: not to have your own bias and what they't have to,
• 13:54
Speaker 3: so you just have to take that off the table.
• 13:56
Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that's one of the cool things about
• 13:58
Speaker 1: the social media screens is it's just the company sets policies,
• 14:02
Speaker 1: says this type, let's bring it in and you you
• 14:06
Speaker 1: don't have a rogue person has certain political beliefs, look
• 14:12
Speaker 1: at something and go, oh, I don't like that person. Yeah,
• 14:15
Speaker 1: they don't believe the same thing I do, so out
• 14:17
Speaker 1: and so that runs prolific through uh, you know, an
• 14:22
  Speaker 1: entire for.
• 14:23
Speaker 2: Long the indo our organization is thinking like you do, yeah,
• 14:26
Speaker 2: which is not always good.
• 14:27
Speaker 1: No, that's right. So so you know, have you have
• 14:35
  Speaker 1: you I guess I'm blown away by how I don't
• 14:41
Speaker 1: remember back in twenty thirteen stuff happening that is certainly
• 14:45
Speaker 1: happens today. Like I think there are people wrecked and
• 14:50
Speaker 1: ruined off social media than way more than their.
• 14:52
Speaker 2: Well, political climate and everything else is so much more
• 14:57
Speaker 2: you know adversary today that people it used to be. Yeah,
• 15:01
Speaker 2: what it used to be. So twenty thirteen is that
• 15:03
Speaker 2: not about the time that that my Space was dying
• 15:06
Speaker 2: and Facebook was taking off and sort of handing over
• 15:10
Speaker 2: the reins, and Twitter probably was still in its infinite stages.
• 15:16
Speaker 3: And you know, I mean, the reality is this. People
• 15:19
Speaker 3: are more educated today on what to post and what
• 15:21
Speaker 3: not to post. But back then, you didn't know. You
• 15:24
Speaker 3: didn't think of, oh, I'm going to be online for
• 15:26
Speaker 3: the rest of my life. You don't think like that.
• 15:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, there's there's so many instances today where people like
• 15:36
Speaker 1: it's brought up when they're twenty eight years old something
• 15:39
Speaker 1: they put on social media when they were sixteen, and
• 15:42
Speaker 1: I'm like, fake, God, I did live back then because
• 15:47
Speaker 1: I was so wild and would have.
• 15:49
  Speaker 3: I mean, I'm glad I didn't have social media in
• 15:51
  Speaker 3: college or high school. I'm glad I didn't have a
• 15:53
Speaker 3: cell phoney, cell phone cameras your.
• 15:56
Speaker 1: Pocket right so far deep in their feet, they haven't
• 15:59
Speaker 1: been back that deep in years. You're almost better off
• 16:02
Speaker 1: somebody to have a little success. You have a little
• 16:05
Speaker 1: you make one person mad at work, you know, you
• 16:08
Speaker 1: create one enemy in your life, and so they go
• 16:13
Speaker 1: down their deep dive, you know, and they're like they're
• 16:15
Speaker 1: gonna go and then they're going to expose something, and
• 16:17
Speaker 1: then they dig deeper and deeper and morse, people start
• 16:20
Speaker 1: digging your just like you know.
• 16:22
Speaker 2: Wow, even if you're not even if you're not public,
• 16:26
Speaker 2: and you've befriended someone at work in your inner circle
• 16:31
Speaker 2: who now has a vendetta against you, Yeah, who's going
• 16:35
Speaker 2: to take your tweet? Take us a picture of it,
• 16:39
Speaker 2: share it. You know, I can't believe Ken said this
• 16:43
Speaker 2: five years ago. Look what he said. But it's not public.
• 16:46
Speaker 2: But now they've exposed you. Yeah, because you thought they
• 16:49
  Speaker 2: were a friend.
• 16:50
Speaker 1: Yeah. So oh, I mean even today when we do
• 16:53
Speaker 1: these and I do social media clips, I'm like, I've
• 16:57
Speaker 1: always got this kind of backfilter on, like should I
• 17:00
Speaker 1: post that? Should? There's been a couple of times where
• 17:03
Speaker 1: we posted something and there was one time where we
• 17:09
Speaker 1: talked about a bad hire who went to work early
• 17:11
Speaker 1: on his first day at work and cut his thumb
• 17:13
Speaker 1: off before the before his boss even got there. Wow.
• 17:16
Speaker 1: And so you know, you know, you can find yourself
• 17:20
Speaker 1: making a lot of fun of that, and it is
• 17:22
Speaker 1: kind of comical, but it's tragic to it is tragic, right,
• 17:26
Speaker 1: And it like the guy found in my following the
• 17:28
Speaker 1: blood down the road. The guy bicycled like ten miles
• 17:31
Speaker 1: to the to the hospital, and so you know, in
• 17:35
Speaker 1: the spirit of just kind of having fun, you know,
• 17:37
Speaker 1: is you just go, oh, yeah, it's fun, you know,
• 17:39
Speaker 1: you do you believe that you're walking around And when
• 17:42
Speaker 1: I but when I watched it, when we posted it,
• 17:45
Speaker 1: I was like, oh, that doesn't it just doesn't horrific.
• 17:49
  Speaker 1: It doesn't feel good, you know, It's like I don't
• 17:51
  Speaker 1: feel good.
• 17:51
Speaker 3: Soels like that's the same story that was intended.
• 17:53
Speaker 2: Yeah, right, it just.
• 17:54
Speaker 1: Didn't come across. You know. The way we responded was
• 17:57
Speaker 1: in good, good fun. So I thought about, like, if
• 18:01
Speaker 1: this guy watched that, he would he would see us
• 18:03
Speaker 1: anybody think we're making fun of him.
• 18:05
Speaker 2: So this story is taking twenty thirteen, right, So for
• 18:08
Speaker 2: thirteen years, this individual has had to live with this nightmare,
• 18:13
Speaker 2: this still following her. Yes, we're still a story to
• 18:15
Speaker 2: talking about it publicly today thirteen years later.
• 18:19
Speaker 1: Because she was in the news and this is a
• 18:21
  Speaker 1: big story.
• 18:23
Speaker 2: So I felt totally good with Well to one more
• 18:25
Speaker 2: question where she at today?
• 18:27
Speaker 1: I don't know, and look it up. It's a good question.
• 18:30
Speaker 2: I'd be curious to.
• 18:31
Speaker 1: kJ you want to look up, you want to look
• 18:33
  Speaker 1: that up.
• 18:35
Speaker 3: Let us know, baby, baby, it's a better bad hire
• 18:39
Speaker 3: story now right, she's improved your skills.
• 18:43
Speaker 1: All right, Jamie, what do you got? All right? Of course?
• 18:47
Speaker 3: Yeah, sure, all right, here's mine. In March twenty twenty one,
• 18:50
Speaker 3: the publisher behind Vogue, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker
• 18:54
Speaker 3: announced they'd hired Alexi mccannon as editor in chief of
• 18:57
Speaker 3: teen Vague. She was twenty seven award winning journalist, a
• 19:01
Speaker 3: rising star, and by every measure, the perfect hire. She
• 19:06
Speaker 3: had also posted racist tweets back in twenty eleven, so
• 19:09
Speaker 3: we're back in that era, right, ten years earlier. She
• 19:12
Speaker 3: disclosed them during the interview. The publisher's own h her
• 19:15
Speaker 3: department confirmed this publicly. They knew, and they moved forward anyway.
• 19:19
Speaker 3: The announcement went out March fifth. Screenshots she just mentioned,
• 19:23
Speaker 3: screenshots screenshots of her old tweets went viral almost immediately.
• 19:28
Speaker 1: She had an enemy. Somebody didn't get the job.
• 19:29
Speaker 3: That friend she made men. Twenty members of her own staff,
• 19:33
Speaker 3: people she hadn't even met yet, publicly condemned the hire.
• 19:36
Speaker 3: Alta Beauty paused a seven figure add by Bertsbes suspended
• 19:40
Speaker 3: their campaign Oh my God on March eighteen, thirteen days
• 19:44
Speaker 3: after the announcement. Alexi resigned before she started, before she
• 19:48
Speaker 3: published a single article, before she even sat in the
• 19:51
Speaker 3: editor's chair. And this is what gets me the messed.
• 19:54
Speaker 3: The publisher knew about the post Alexi told them about,
• 19:58
Speaker 3: but what they didn't find were the homophobic slurs, the
• 20:01
Speaker 3: halloween photo, the full pattern. She disclosed what she chose
• 20:05
Speaker 3: to disclose, and they took her ward for it. So
• 20:08
Speaker 3: knowing about the problem and understanding the full scope of
• 20:11
Speaker 3: the problem are two very different things.
• 20:14
  Speaker 1: That's for real.
• 20:15
Speaker 3: What do we think of that one?
• 20:16
  Speaker 1: I don't know. I think it's I think it's interesting.
• 20:18
Speaker 1: It's kind of like it's kind of like when someone
• 20:20
Speaker 1: goes to work and they go, hey, you know, they
• 20:22
Speaker 1: always anything in your background?
• 20:25
Speaker 3: No, just But it's also like when you're on the
• 20:28
Speaker 3: spot like that, you sometimes are like, I don't know,
• 20:30
  Speaker 3: Like I think I'm okay. Then you're like, I don't
• 20:33
  Speaker 3: I don't.
• 20:33
Speaker 1: Know what if they're going to find it or not,
• 20:36
Speaker 1: Like is it too old they won't find it? Or
• 20:39
Speaker 1: you know, do you remember the do you remember the
• 20:41
Speaker 1: flying Biscuit story? It's a restaurant called the Flying bisk
• 20:45
Speaker 1: Climb Biscuit where the manager, the two owners, yeah, hire
• 20:52
Speaker 1: some guy to come in and do dishes and do
• 20:54
Speaker 1: that kind of back of the house stuff. And you
• 20:57
Speaker 1: know they ask him, you you ever you know you're
• 21:00
Speaker 1: been arrested. Oh yeah, you know. I it's just a
• 21:02
Speaker 1: little minor thing on some checks, is you know.
• 21:06
Speaker 2: So he didn't lie. He just did tell the whole trick.
• 21:09
  Speaker 2: Yeah he did.
• 21:09
Speaker 1: That's right. He had, he disclosed. He did have running
• 21:12
Speaker 1: with the law. It's just his running was arm robbery
• 21:16
Speaker 1: and forgot fraudulent chack, you know, the same things right
• 21:19
Speaker 1: in a bad jack. I mean you made it out
• 21:20
Speaker 1: like yeah, yeah, it's a bad jack, you know. You know, man,
• 21:24
Speaker 1: I just you know, I was in between jobs and
• 21:27
Speaker 1: so that's the reason I really need this job. So anyway,
• 21:31
Speaker 1: they come to him and they find on like his
• 21:34
Speaker 1: seventh day of work. Then nine month eight month old
• 21:38
Speaker 1: pregnant managers in there. When she opens the safe, he
• 21:42
Speaker 1: walks up behind her and stabs her fifteen twenty times,
• 21:45
Speaker 1: jacks her body outside, and throws her in the dumpster
• 21:48
Speaker 1: behind the dumpster, right, And it's exactly like that it's
• 21:55
Speaker 1: like asking and then you know they go, oh yeah,
• 21:58
Speaker 1: you know, and you don't actually so he admitted to something.
• 22:01
Speaker 1: You're like, oh, well okay, yeah, no, you deserve a
• 22:04
Speaker 1: second chance. And then you don't find out that wasn't
• 22:07
Speaker 1: the whole story. And that's probably It's kind of like
• 22:09
Speaker 1: this as she went in there and said, eh, and
• 22:12
Speaker 1: the fact that one did it die from it. But
• 22:15
Speaker 1: you know, bees, birds, bees, you know, others tould their accounts.
• 22:21
Speaker 1: I mean, you got twenty people revolting. You've absolutely disrupted
• 22:25
Speaker 1: your culture because they're going to find out that you
• 22:27
Speaker 1: knew or you were told, and that you did it anyway.
• 22:31
Speaker 1: You know, the repercussions of that. Social media, their social
• 22:33
Speaker 1: media posts are crazy and people should they should do
• 22:36
  Speaker 1: these social.
• 22:37
Speaker 3: Media chair again their public posts, yeah, public, Yeah, this.
• 22:41
Speaker 1: Isn't behind a this is behind their firewall of their friends.
• 22:44
Speaker 1: You know, it's kind of crazy. What do you got?
• 22:49
Speaker 2: Do you see a lot Do you see a lot
• 22:52
Speaker 2: of pr organizations running social media screens these days?
• 22:55
Speaker 3: And social media influencers.
• 22:57
Speaker 2: Social media in today's world.
• 22:59
Speaker 3: Right, everybody's used to back in the day print ads
• 23:01
Speaker 3: and different ways to do marketing and advertising, but lots
• 23:04
Speaker 3: of companies now hire influencers to promote their brand. Yeah right,
• 23:08
Speaker 3: we better do a social media check on that influencer,
• 23:10
Speaker 3: because god forbid, they're promoting your brand, but maybe on
• 23:13
Speaker 3: their social media they're promoting your competitor. Not a good thing.
• 23:16
Speaker 2: Yeah right, okay, the contractors, So so you're still your
• 23:23
  Speaker 2: brand face.
• 23:24
Speaker 1: So you can you imagine what happens when one of
• 23:26
Speaker 1: them hits like, oh, they're doing great, like they're killing it.
• 23:29
Speaker 1: They're like getting lots of clicks and views for you.
• 23:32
Speaker 1: So it's like, oh no.
• 23:33
Speaker 2: So you I find out they're on that steam list. Yeah,
• 23:35
Speaker 2: and then and then you're like, you got the opposite direction.
• 23:38
Speaker 1: Oh my god, I think of you and money person.
• 23:41
Speaker 3: They had a contestant that they found out was doing
• 23:44
Speaker 3: the racial social media post got pulled right away.
• 23:48
Speaker 1: We just did. We just did a social media reaction
• 23:52
Speaker 1: videos last week, and it was all about the the
• 23:58
Speaker 1: girl on the Bachelor, the best thurette who you know.
• 24:02
Speaker 1: I think you're aware of the story, but it is.
• 24:04
Speaker 1: You know, they found out she had was serious domestic violence.
• 24:08
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, had song battery.
• 24:11
Speaker 1: She already she'd already been arrested, she'd already had it
• 24:13
Speaker 1: accused every one time, and then you know she's taking
• 24:16
Speaker 1: her current boyfriend. She's you know, and.
• 24:18
Speaker 2: She's so they already had that show fully filmed right
• 24:22
  Speaker 2: three court.
• 24:22
Speaker 1: They were like three quarters the way through. They've probably
• 24:24
Speaker 1: had seventy million in it. I read they probably had
• 24:27
Speaker 1: fifty to seventy million of capital expenditure, and I think
• 24:31
Speaker 1: they've so he's a screen with all the people that
• 24:33
Speaker 1: were on their show. People say that they're challenge to
• 24:36
Speaker 1: go on there because it's a chance to be famous,
• 24:38
Speaker 1: and you know, everyone's left holding the bag. Nobody's going
• 24:41
Speaker 1: to get any residuals. You know, you got you got
• 24:44
Speaker 1: Amy or somebody whoever it was, is expecting uh, twelve
• 24:49
Speaker 1: or fourteen episodes, whatever that ever is. They're not getting
• 24:53
Speaker 1: their product. You know, they're going to sue for what
• 24:55
Speaker 1: they would have made in the advertising. It's a mess.
• 24:58
Speaker 3: And that's why I always say people, yeah, but everybody
• 25:03
Speaker 3: goes into reactive mode. It just would have been proactive
• 25:06
  Speaker 3: from the beginning.
• 25:07
Speaker 1: Yeah, so I could see, you know, same thing up
• 25:10
Speaker 1: but probably even often.
• 25:12
Speaker 2: And let me tell you that I remember, and this
• 25:15
Speaker 2: is going to date me a little bit, but I
• 25:17
Speaker 2: remember the first year that the Bachelor came out when
• 25:20
Speaker 2: they first created The Bachelor, and they went with the
• 25:24
  Speaker 2: first season.
• 25:25
  Speaker 1: I think I was I think I was a baby
• 25:26
  Speaker 1: of that day.
• 25:27
Speaker 2: Well probably on the second season. They had such a
• 25:32
Speaker 2: hard time staffing it during the first season that they
• 25:36
Speaker 2: ran all these different sexually transmitted disease profiles on all
• 25:40
Speaker 2: these contestants that were trying to get on the show.
• 25:43
Speaker 2: And one of the producers called and said, Hey, here's
• 25:46
Speaker 2: three candidates that we need you to overlook their test
• 25:50
Speaker 2: results on and because we really need these three out
• 25:54
Speaker 2: of the you know, these three girls out of twenty
• 25:57
Speaker 2: to get on the show because it helped trading, it
• 26:00
Speaker 2: helps ratings, and so the producer was pressuring us to
• 26:05
Speaker 2: overlook these results and we went in budget budge, and
• 26:09
Speaker 2: so they went to another provider. Oh, you lost the
• 26:13
Speaker 2: lost because we wouldn't. We wouldn't.
• 26:15
Speaker 1: Oh, I didn't realize you were the vendor.
• 26:17
Speaker 2: Yes, we were the vendor that was handling all the.
• 26:20
Speaker 1: Vendor of the Bachelorette.
• 26:22
Speaker 2: Uh, not of background checks, but of their their health assessments,
• 26:27
Speaker 2: some health assessments, believe it or not. So they would
• 26:30
Speaker 2: run I mean they would they would run these folks
• 26:32
Speaker 2: through your analysis, blood samples, run all these different profiles
• 26:37
Speaker 2: on it. We have our doctors.
• 26:39
Speaker 1: You understand how deep they're looking. There's no way they
• 26:41
Speaker 1: didn't know the bat. They clearly knew that. Yeah, they
• 26:44
Speaker 1: just they made as always that she that was going
• 26:49
Speaker 1: to be more powerful A right, So what aana? What
• 26:51
  Speaker 1: do you got?
• 26:52
Speaker 2: All right? So out Back Steakhouse? So with February, yeah,
• 26:59
Speaker 2: out about This is not a commercial for Outback Steakhouse,
• 27:01
Speaker 2: by the way. Yep, they do bloomin onion yea. So
• 27:06
Speaker 2: in February of twenty eighteen, a server is working at
• 27:10
Speaker 2: Outback Steakhouse in Florida. It's a Wednesday morning and a
• 27:14
Speaker 2: local mega church calls in a massive takeout order. Twenty
• 27:18
Speaker 2: five steaks, twenty five chicken, twenty five orders of potatoes,
• 27:22
Speaker 2: and the bill comes out to seven hundred and thirty
• 27:24
Speaker 2: five dollars. The server spends most of her shift putting
• 27:28
Speaker 2: this order together. When the volunteer from the church shows
• 27:32
Speaker 2: up to grab the food, she loads it all in
• 27:35
Speaker 2: the car. No tip here comes the social media post.
• 27:39
Speaker 2: So she goes home that night and posts about it
• 27:42
Speaker 2: on Facebook. Mine She's upset, venning that she only made
• 27:46
Speaker 2: eighteen dollars in tips the entire day. Wow, eighteen dollars
• 27:50
Speaker 2: I feel bad for Okay, yeah, this's twenty eighteen eighteen bucks.
• 27:53
Speaker 2: Is that's a hard day's labor for nineteen bucks. So
• 27:57
Speaker 2: she made eighteen dollars in tips for the entire day
• 28:00
Speaker 2: because that one order had taken her most of her
• 28:02
Speaker 2: shift to get prepared and out the door. A friend
• 28:06
Speaker 2: of hers sees the post. Okay, here's the friend steps
• 28:10
Speaker 2: in and calls the church directly to complain. So no
• 28:15
Speaker 2: one at the church seeing the posts. A friend helped
• 28:18
Speaker 2: promote the post and.
• 28:19
Speaker 4: Then and then announces I saw this on social media
• 28:22
Speaker 4: all this and you were to be ashamed. Your face
• 28:25
Speaker 4: responds by saying they're volunteer simply hadn't known that it
• 28:29
Speaker 4: was customary to tip on large takeout orders, and that
• 28:33
Speaker 4: they tried to contact the restaurant to get a tip
• 28:35
Speaker 4: to the server after the fact.
• 28:38
Speaker 2: Okay, so they were trying to do right. They were
• 28:40
Speaker 2: trying to do right. They were going to tip after
• 28:42
Speaker 2: the fact, but apparently the poste social media post went
• 28:47
  Speaker 2: out to.
• 28:47
Speaker 1: See, you know, someone who's never ordered seven hundred and
• 28:51
Speaker 1: fifty dollars worth of food, you know.
• 28:52
Speaker 3: Think or there aren't the ones that paid the bills
• 28:55
Speaker 3: the like, maybe it was already taken care of.
• 28:57
Speaker 1: Pick Yeah, it's a pick up. I'm just the runner
• 28:58
Speaker 1: pick up his stuff, you.
• 28:59
Speaker 2: Know, eighteen percent twenty percent on a seven hundred and
• 29:02
Speaker 2: thirty five dollars order. You know, I'm just a volunteer.
• 29:05
  Speaker 2: I can't tip you a hundred bucks. That's not one
• 29:07
Speaker 2: hundred dollars. But anyway, So she shows up for work
• 29:10
Speaker 2: the next day and her manager tells her she's fired
• 29:13
Speaker 2: for posting that by a customer on social media because
• 29:17
Speaker 2: it's against company policy. Oh and the church got a
• 29:20
Speaker 2: full seven hundred and thirty five dollars refund for that order.
• 29:24
Speaker 2: So so to recap, she worked most of her shift
• 29:26
Speaker 2: preparing a seven hundred and thirty five dollars order, made
• 29:30
Speaker 2: eighteen dollars for the entire day, and got fired for
• 29:33
Speaker 2: talking about it, and the church got their money back.
• 29:36
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 29:36
Speaker 2: So so really she's the big loser of the day
• 29:40
  Speaker 2: because social media.
• 29:43
Speaker 3: Because because her friend caught older.
• 29:45
Speaker 2: Joan be honest, Yeah, both were a friend. That friend
• 29:49
  Speaker 2: got me.
• 29:49
Speaker 3: That friend should get fired.
• 29:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, so hopefully that friend is a job opening for
• 29:55
  Speaker 2: us somewhere.
• 29:55
Speaker 1: Yeah, so well, you know, I was like thinking about
• 29:58
Speaker 1: Outback's move, right, and they had to assess that, they
• 30:04
Speaker 1: had to assess that the the move of the of
• 30:09
Speaker 1: of complaining about a tip was worse for their brand.
• 30:16
Speaker 1: You know. Then then you know, then certainly the corporation
• 30:20
Speaker 1: can't jump on and be like, yeah, you didn't tip us.
• 30:24
Speaker 1: And perhaps they knew the whole story, right, that that
• 30:27
Speaker 1: that that the church had called and was trying to
• 30:29
Speaker 1: figure out a way to tip and didn't you know,
• 30:32
Speaker 1: maybe they knew the whole story and the girls just didn't.
• 30:34
Speaker 1: She's so she just you know, shot off without really
• 30:37
  Speaker 1: no yeah, or.
• 30:38
Speaker 2: She was venning, didn't didn't call out the church directly.
• 30:43
Speaker 2: Her friend knew who the church was, her friend knew
• 30:46
Speaker 2: she weren't it out Back. Yeah, you know, it's one
• 30:48
Speaker 2: of those context things that you want to read the post.
• 30:51
Speaker 2: Did she, you know, hashtag out Back Steakhouse? Does she
• 30:55
Speaker 2: hashtag and call out the church? Interpost? There's a lot
• 30:59
Speaker 2: of variables there that there would be challenged.
• 31:04
Speaker 1: There's so much that can that an employee can destroy
• 31:11
Speaker 1: with a social media books.
• 31:12
Speaker 2: I mean, but in.
• 31:13
Speaker 3: Tutor her defense, does she know that what Outback social
• 31:16
Speaker 3: media policy was not. Yeah, so in her mind that
• 31:20
Speaker 3: had just mean I worked today, I just wanted a
• 31:23
Speaker 3: couple of dollars. I didn't get it.
• 31:24
  Speaker 1: That's a great idea.
• 31:26
Speaker 3: Not I don't, and then for outback to come back
• 31:28
Speaker 3: and say, well, we fired her because that's not your
• 31:31
Speaker 3: Well did she know that?
• 31:32
Speaker 2: I don't even know my employees here know the social
• 31:35
Speaker 2: media policy? Yeah, I was actually just thinking, you know,
• 31:39
Speaker 2: I'm thinking about that.
• 31:40
Speaker 1: Do some research and spell up some and share it
• 31:43
Speaker 1: with our customers. Like if you don't have one, everybody
• 31:46
Speaker 1: should have to say, here's a way to use this
• 31:48
Speaker 1: document to kind of choose.
• 31:49
Speaker 2: You probably have one. If I know our lawyers we have.
• 31:52
Speaker 2: It's just do we know it? And does our staff
• 31:55
Speaker 2: know it? That's probably a different one. But you know,
• 31:57
Speaker 2: it's like your handbook is fifty page handbook, employee handbook.
• 32:00
  Speaker 2: I don't know where.
• 32:01
Speaker 3: Employees are an extension of your brand, but it is
• 32:04
Speaker 3: HR's role too. You have a policy, which I encourage
• 32:07
Speaker 3: everyone to have a policy to make sure they know it.
• 32:09
Speaker 1: Yeah. My thing on the social media screening, I think
• 32:13
Speaker 1: the position I've taken is as as b checks, you know,
• 32:18
Speaker 1: start to expand, it's it's a really kind of awareness
• 32:23
Speaker 1: campaign on social media screening and what it can do.
• 32:27
Speaker 1: And all that is is like encouraging people. If you
• 32:31
Speaker 1: feel like you can't do this all the way down
• 32:35
Speaker 1: to every employee, then you know, at least start somewhere
• 32:40
Speaker 1: like you know, people who have big brand awareness.
• 32:44
Speaker 3: Or have forward facing, forward.
• 32:47
Speaker 1: Facing you know, would be a credibility voice for your brand. Uh,
• 32:53
Speaker 1: you know principles, you know, superintendent.
• 33:00
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think we've talked about a couple of
• 33:02
Speaker 5: another day, right, because you know they're going to go, hey, this,
• 33:09
Speaker 5: so and so a the director of you know.
• 33:13
Speaker 2: This that or the O your director level should know.
• 33:15
Speaker 2: But a server out at outback is probably not going
• 33:19
Speaker 2: to be as aware of the social media post. But
• 33:22
Speaker 2: then again she may not be out there posting about
• 33:25
Speaker 2: outback or about the megachurch.
• 33:27
  Speaker 1: I'm just saying that's a PROBA Love has a way
• 33:30
Speaker 1: for people to start in their social media of doubt.
• 33:33
Speaker 1: And then my feeling is after they see, you know,
• 33:39
Speaker 1: after you've done fifty sixty, you'll probably be like.
• 33:43
Speaker 3: Oh, we probably should do this.
• 33:44
Speaker 1: On average, we probably should do this a little deeper
• 33:47
Speaker 1: because I bet that twenty five year old we had
• 33:49
Speaker 1: probably that's worth social media than that other person that
• 33:54
Speaker 1: we just did, you know, because.
• 33:57
Speaker 2: Probably the radio. Yeah, the young generation has a worse
• 34:01
Speaker 2: social media history than the older older population.
• 34:04
Speaker 1: Well they live on it, yeah, I mean.
• 34:06
Speaker 2: They live on it.
• 34:07
Speaker 3: They they're also their daily news book was a novel.
• 34:10
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's Facebook was a novel that you put.
• 34:12
Speaker 2: Pictures of all of our stuff. My kids my Space
• 34:15
  Speaker 2: went down.
• 34:16
Speaker 3: Yeah, my kids tell me that Facebook now is for
• 34:18
Speaker 3: the old people. I'm like, wait, what, Like I still
• 34:20
Speaker 3: post pictures and only old people look at you.
• 34:22
Speaker 2: Well, I think about all the people who had all
• 34:25
Speaker 2: their records archive when my Space shut down. Yeah, that's
• 34:28
  Speaker 2: one way.
• 34:31
Speaker 3: Oh gosh, I never had a MySpace page.
• 34:35
Speaker 2: You know. That's got to be the nineties. Yeah, that's
• 34:38
Speaker 2: got to be the late nineties, right earlier that.
• 34:40
  Speaker 1: I think if I had a MySpace, I don't.
• 34:42
Speaker 2: That's when the first Internet, I think, first come out.
• 34:44
  Speaker 2: But I don't. I don't.
• 34:45
Speaker 3: I was in college in the nineties, so people were
• 34:47
Speaker 3: making my Space pages.
• 34:49
  Speaker 1: They were Yeah.
• 34:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, so I was gonna say.
• 34:52
Speaker 3: It's also when you put the disc in for AOL
• 34:54
Speaker 3: and you you know, yeah.
• 34:56
Speaker 1: People don't know what that is today.
• 34:59
Speaker 2: We might want to Chang. It's a subject because you're
• 35:01
Speaker 2: all agent ourselves, so you gotta be careful here.
• 35:05
Speaker 1: Well, I loved it, this is this is great. Those
• 35:08
Speaker 1: are really good social media stories. And and you know,
• 35:12
Speaker 1: my advice to you is, you know, explore social media screen.
• 35:17
Speaker 1: You know, maybe maybe if you now it's not the
• 35:20
Speaker 1: right time, you do it later and figure it out
• 35:24
Speaker 1: before it's too because you know, when we did research
• 35:26
Speaker 1: for the show that the stories were not hard to find.
• 35:30
Speaker 1: I mean it was like an immediate like holy cow, just.
• 35:33
Speaker 3: Type in social media catastrophes and.
• 35:36
Speaker 1: It's exactly right, and it's just wow, and you're like,
• 35:40
Speaker 1: you know, it's it's it's pretty unreal. And so you know, uh,
• 35:45
Speaker 1: if you're if you're if you're not doing them, you know, uh,
• 35:51
Speaker 1: find one and run run them. I'm sure someone will
• 35:55
Speaker 1: let you have them for free. Rand will probably let
• 35:58
Speaker 1: you have, you know, a couple of amples and let
• 36:00
Speaker 1: you run it on people. I know that we did
• 36:02
Speaker 1: that one time when somebody used to work for us,
• 36:04
  Speaker 1: and we we.
• 36:05
Speaker 2: Had a pretty good idea of what we were.
• 36:06
Speaker 1: Going to find and we sure and if we found it,
• 36:08
Speaker 1: so yeah, I mean, if yeah.
• 36:11
Speaker 2: Good thing they were prior employees. Yes, but.
• 36:16
Speaker 1: You know that would have uh you know, knowing that
• 36:20
Speaker 1: now you know is you should go out and get
• 36:23
Speaker 1: one and test it, review it, look at the results,
• 36:26
Speaker 1: you know, have some policy discussions and see if you
• 36:29
Speaker 1: can figure out way to use it. You know, I
• 36:32
  Speaker 1: think they're I think they're a great investigative tool. And
• 36:34
Speaker 1: I'm totally completely surprised at the number of people who
• 36:38
Speaker 1: will post publicly, you know, the worst things ever, you know,
