- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast Powered by the Nation, Part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: Tristan, what is up, my man?
- 0:51SPEAKER_05: Now that we own the entire state of Mississippi, when do we get to know which part of that land we get personally?
- 0:59SPEAKER_05: Like I know TechStech is shopping it up and sending it out to each loyal fan, which is us.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 1:06SPEAKER_05: Um I I just want to know when we're getting those.
- 1:09SPEAKER_05: And uh what part of the state are you hoping for?
- 1:12SPEAKER_05: I don't want any part of that state.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: Are you sure?
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: Being currently living in Louisiana, uh, if you imagine a worse version of Louisiana, that's Mississippi.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: Is there much of a difference at the end of the day?
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's better food and there's better football in Louisiana.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: So I uh clearly the state of Mississippi is in shambles right now.
- 1:33SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 1:34SPEAKER_05: Uh, because we uh have no issue putting both their teams to bed uh here in the year of the of the Lord 2022.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Well, the first one, Mississippi State was technically still 2021.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: Oh, it was oh I thought it was in January.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: No, no, it was in December.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: It was the same day actually last year.
- 1:52SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay, gotcha.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Well, it's 28th.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: But uh, but regardless, since the 28th of December of 2021, we as Texas Tech are 4-0 against the SEC.
- 2:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that that's 365 days.
- 2:06SPEAKER_05: So we'll we'll we'll consider that in the same zone.
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: Um, and yes, uh, Tex Tech has no issue uh putting a sword up to the mighty SEC.
- 2:16SPEAKER_05: Uh but uh you know the shame of it is is none of those teams wanted to be there.
- 2:21SPEAKER_05: So Tex Tech wasn't getting their best.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: Um, Tex Tech was just another team on the schedule, didn't really mean much to them.
- 2:27SPEAKER_05: So it's just it's a shame that even though we handedly beat all those teams, um, it's it's just a it's a shame that it didn't really count.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: Well, clearly Ole Miss was our Super Bowl.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Um you know, we we got up the most for it.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, anytime you're playing an SEC team, you just bring it that much more, uh, because it just means more over there.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: Ole Miss was disappointing, disappointed they weren't playing for the playoff.
- 2:52SPEAKER_05: So because you know, a school like Ole Miss has those kind of ambitions every year.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: So of course, you know, they've been to many playoffs, in fact.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: Uh actually, I think zero, uh, if you're counting.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: So the same number as Texas Tech.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, no, man, this is a great game.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Uh, the Texas Bowl, in case you missed it.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: Uh Texas Tech wins 42-25 in an overwhelming victory against the rebels of Ole Miss.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: Um, I was there, it was fantastic.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: Um these bowl games rule.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: I like winning bowl games.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: Who I I mean, who's who fight me on that?
- 3:28SPEAKER_05: It kind of brings like a a smile to my face whenever we whenever we like recap a score in a game real quick.
- 3:34SPEAKER_05: Are there ever listeners who are like, oh crap?
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: But I'm absolutely with you, but um, yeah, man, it was a it was an awesome game.
- 3:48SPEAKER_05: And the funny thing is, I was pretty relaxed the entire game.
- 3:52SPEAKER_05: I was having fun the entire time.
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we were definitely having fun in the stadium.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: It was it was uh overwhelmingly amount of tech fans in there.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Uh I'd probably say, I don't know, I'd probably say 70-30 Texas Tech fans.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: Um, we clearly we sold out our ticket allowment real quick.
- 4:09SPEAKER_03: Uh there were tech fans all over the place.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: We were kind of in a neutral area of the of the stadium, and uh it was pretty overwhelming Texas Tech fans.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: So that ruled.
- 4:18SPEAKER_05: Um, you could definitely tell on TV.
- 4:19SPEAKER_05: I swear any anything good happened for tech, Aurora the crowd, anything bad happened for tech booing.
- 4:24SPEAKER_05: So it was you could definitely tell it was more of a home game for us, which it absolutely should have been.
- 4:30SPEAKER_05: It would have been an utter embarrassment had there been more Ole Miss fans in that stadium.
- 4:34SPEAKER_05: We are Texas Tech University.
- 4:36SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry, University of Texas Tech, um, and and the Texas Bowl.
- 4:41SPEAKER_05: So you you one would hope that you would have more fans in the home state at the stadium.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: But yeah, there was definitely there was definitely a lot of Texas Tech driving into Houston.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: I drove in the day of, and you just see double T decal after double D decal on the on the trucks and the cars driving into uh a very crowded, uh traffic-filled Houston, Texas.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, the double decal?
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: That's hot.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Nice.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: Double T decal.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: Gotta love it.
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: Um no man, it it was really fun.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: It was really fun being there.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, this is the first football game I got to see this season in person.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Um, and they brought it, man.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: They uh Tyler Shuck played out of his mind.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, the Jaron Bradley great plays, Taj Brooks had some big runs there.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Um, and the defense brought it, what, five turnovers?
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: So yes, clearly this was this was Texas Tech's game through and through.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: Uh, there was no doubt in anybody's mind.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: We just had a great time watching it.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: One thing that really stood out to me, whoever you're watching both sides of the ball here, was that we had the foot on the floor the entire game.
- 5:46SPEAKER_05: Like we didn't we didn't seem to pull out any sort of conservative mindset, even whenever we had a a two-score lead.
- 5:52SPEAKER_05: We didn't like try to just chew up clock or anything like that.
- 5:55SPEAKER_05: We were just like trying to floor it and add more points to the board the entire time.
- 5:58SPEAKER_05: The same goes on defense, like you didn't know you didn't see a whole lot of you know just rubber banding, like letting Ole Miss get down to the red zone and uh score and all that.
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: And it was just straight up, no, we're gonna get the ball from you and we're gonna stop you on fourth down each and every time.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: It was it was awesome.
- 6:12SPEAKER_05: The defense played with their hairs on fire, their hair on fire, hairs on fire?
- 6:16SPEAKER_05: Hair on fire.
- 6:16SPEAKER_05: What yeah?
- 6:17SPEAKER_05: I mean, but if you're talking about multiple heads, but it what if you're talking about multiple heads of hair, is that hair or hairs?
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: Listen, man, I don't make the rules.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: I think hair works.
- 6:26SPEAKER_05: Okay, let's let's we'll leave it there on talking grammar.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: For sure, dude.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: Um let's uh okay, so you didn't get you didn't get to go, but the TV experience.
- 6:38SPEAKER_05: Rub it in.
- 6:40SPEAKER_05: Wow, okay.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, people were asking where you were, uh, pre-game festivities and everything wise.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: They were like, Where's Tristan?
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Well, he just doesn't love Texas Tech enough to show up.
- 6:49SPEAKER_03: It was clearly he just hates this university and and everything about it.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: I I just I have to agree adhere to my duties of supporting the youths.
- 6:58SPEAKER_05: I I couldn't I couldn't head over there.
- 7:00SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm terribly sorry.
- 7:01SPEAKER_05: I know y'all, y'all wanted to see my ugly mug, would have ruined your day if you did, but um, I I apologize, but thank you for being there in our stead and and representing us and the people.
- 7:12SPEAKER_05: I like the jersey you're wearing.
- 7:13SPEAKER_05: I don't think I've seen that on you before.
- 7:14SPEAKER_05: That was uh Yeah, I bought it.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: Uh I bought it um whenever whenever we wore the black throwbacks this year.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: I can't remember what game that was for.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: It was Baylor or or TCU or some one of the we wore throwbacks.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, cool.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: Uh lost every single game wearing those, but uh they look great, and they're it's a beautiful jersey.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: So I just went and said F it and bought it.
- 7:34SPEAKER_05: Wearing wearing black to the old miss game is the move because anytime you share a color, you always go with the alternate color the other team doesn't have.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: I always think like that.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: I'm always on that sort of line of thinking.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: It was it was a great uniform matchup, by the way.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: Uh Ole Miss busted out the powdered blues, those are always a good move.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then tech.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: I like that combo.
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: You know, some people don't like the uh the red jerseys, the red pants.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: I thought it was fine.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: I listen, man, when it comes to the uniforms, a lot of people have a lot of strong opinions.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think Texas Tech has great uniforms.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Yes, I I do.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: I don't think they have bad uniforms by any means.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, could we change a stripe here or there?
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: Could the techs be bigger?
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: But I think we're fine.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: You can't really mess up red and black.
- 8:17SPEAKER_05: No, it's it's it's a color that goes together 100%.
- 8:20SPEAKER_05: You never you can't make you have to try really hard to make that look bad.
- 8:23SPEAKER_05: Don't get me wrong, we we've made it look bad before, but it's it's a tough combo to mess up.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that year of Cliff uh with with Mahomes, where we just busted out like four alternate jerseys that all look terrible.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that wasn't a good move.
- 8:38SPEAKER_05: I kind of appreciated Under Armour trying to make us like the Oregon Ducks of the the Southwest.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: I I I appreciate that.
- 8:45SPEAKER_05: That was I kind of I kind of liked the bit for a while though.
- 8:49SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 8:49SPEAKER_05: I liked I liked having these uh weird uniforms each and every time.
- 8:53SPEAKER_05: And and Kingsbury was a uh a good coach to do that under for a short while.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think some people are a little too crazy about uniforms.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: It's like we need to look sharp every time.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: Like, hey, bust out a crazy jersey every once in a while.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: I don't care, you know, but uh at least try to make them look better than what we've seen.
- 9:08SPEAKER_05: I like how they continue to change, you know, every so cycle or so.
- 9:12SPEAKER_05: I I like that we don't just stick to one unit uniform preset and just stick with that non-stop.
- 9:17SPEAKER_05: I think that's a little overrated.
- 9:19SPEAKER_05: Um, but uh yeah, uh overall, I think we're looking sharp.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: Uh stopped at the gambling gauchos uh pregame over there at Bell Station.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: Uh it was a great time.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: Good meeting those guys, good meeting a lot of you from Twitter.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: Uh Maddie Nomeo is in fact a rat.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: Uh it's wild.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: Is I mean is he like man-sized or is he rat?
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's he's he's a human-sized rat.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: Um, his profile picture is exactly what it shows.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, great guy.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, met uh met Raider Ty as well, had a had a good long conversation with him.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, the rock.
- 9:53SPEAKER_03: Is he also indeed a rock?
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: He's also, yeah, he's also a rock.
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: So you're just speaking to a rock.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was weird.
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: I was kind of in the corner talking to a rat and a rock.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: It was it was wild.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: Uh does he just appear or is yeah, he's got he's got an assistant actually that takes him places.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: So assistant was really nice.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: Um, no, and then obviously, you know, Rob and Kyle put on a great party.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: It was great to meet uh a lot of you.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: Um Joe Goodman as well, finally, our good buddy.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: We've had him on the podcast three times and never met in person, but uh Joe showed up.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, we all hopped on their pod and uh their live show had a good had a good old time.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: They had some good drinks, some strong drinks, I might add.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: Uh they had a they had a drink called Swing Your Sword.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: Uh it was it was in honor of Mike Leach and it was great.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: Uh served in a martini glass, didn't know that.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, so as soon as I ordered it for me and uh my buddy Logan who was there with us, um, we're just two dudes drinking some martinis uh at a good time, but hey, we're delicious.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: It was it was a great show, it was a great party.
- 10:57SPEAKER_05: You're gonna make me do it.
- 10:58SPEAKER_05: We need to get over the martini glass thing.
- 11:01SPEAKER_05: We we we need to.
- 11:02SPEAKER_05: It's okay, it's just a cocktail glass.
- 11:05SPEAKER_05: Cocktails all have a designated glass, and it's not necessarily a girly glass.
- 11:11SPEAKER_05: I mean in the martini glass.
- 11:15SPEAKER_05: So what's what's we need we we collectively need to get over it?
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: It's not really even about the look of it or anything for me, it's just a dumb glass.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: It's just not it, it it is very easy to spill.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, extremely easy to spill.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: You knock that thing a little bit and it is going on the floor.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: So I just think martini glasses are stupid, they don't really make sense.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: Uh I I get I guess the classy factor of the whole thing, but uh no, not for me.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: Not for me.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: Just give me a high highball glass.
- 11:45SPEAKER_03: I'm good.
- 11:45SPEAKER_05: I mean, you're speaking to a very spilly boy.
- 11:48SPEAKER_05: So that's true.
- 11:49SPEAKER_05: I'm with you.
- 11:50SPEAKER_05: If with any drinking my martini glass, most of it's going to be on the bar.
- 11:54SPEAKER_05: But I I'm just I'm just saying, like in the in the in the aesthetic of it, we need to get over the girliness of it.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: Like it's just yeah, that's uh no, that's not my that's not my issue with it.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: It's my issue is when I'm talking to people standing up in a line, and I I I'm a you know, I'm a physical when I talk, I use my hands, and the freaking half the drink Italian Americans half the drink is on the floor by the time I'm done with it.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: So uh that's just uh talking martini glasses here.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: Uh not my favorite, but the drink was delicious, the party was great.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: Uh, had a good time after after the pregame festivities at Bell Station.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: Um, we headed over to Dave's Hot Chicken, downtown Houston.
- 12:34SPEAKER_03: Shouts out them.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, chicken blew my effing hat off.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: Um, so hot, too hot, in fact.
- 12:42SPEAKER_05: Well, I love me some hot chicken.
- 12:43SPEAKER_05: Spent some time in Nashville.
- 12:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's it's it's its best as uh uh export because God knows the country music right now isn't.
- 12:50SPEAKER_05: Um they epic mainstream is bad, trash, country music opinion there.
- 12:55SPEAKER_05: Um but um uh yeah, you kind of just breeze past the swing your sword drink.
- 13:01SPEAKER_05: Um, I know all the other people are as focused in on that still as me.
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: Um, can you please explain what's in that cocktail?
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: I don't really even know.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: I know scotch was the main was the main liquor.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: Scotch, yeah, it was scotch, and then it had it had grenadine, and that's what made it red.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: Uh and I scotch and grenadine.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: It was it was wild, but it was good.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: It was tasty.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: It was a little fruity, but also, you know, it's still scotch.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: So you got that flavor with it.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: But it was uh it'll knock you on your butt, I tell you what.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: Logan had a couple of them, and uh and brother was feeling it uh there at the end.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: So it was good, it was good.
- 13:37SPEAKER_05: Was I like a a one of Houston's like tech bars?
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, it was it was locally it was it was a local Texas Tech owned bar, and that's why they had it there.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: Uh so always got to support you know your Red Raiders in in H Town and uh DFW, all that.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: So um it was it was great, it was awesome.
- 13:53SPEAKER_05: It was dope.
- 13:54SPEAKER_05: I'm a biggest FOMO of my life.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, you missed out, brother.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: Should have been there.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: But uh regardless, the game was great.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: We got there right before uh kickoff because we were you know partaking in some hot chicken that uh ruined me the next day.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: Um but we we like I said, we had some neutral fans around us, old Miss fans directly behind us, uh a lot of Texas Tech people in front of us.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: So the old Miss fans around us were very nice, uh, even though we were pretty obnoxious.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, as soon as Texas Tech starts playing good, we start, you know, you mean the whole game floating a little bit, getting what's that?
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: The whole game.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: So pretty much the whole game.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: Uh um it was fun.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: It was fun.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: Uh Tyler Shuck.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: Let's let's talk about Tyler Shuck.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Uh, 111 yards on the ground, two touchdowns, uh, 242 through the air, one interception on a play that uh pissed me off to no end.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: Um, early on, we were a little too tricky with the two QBs.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: Now, one play worked where Shuck ran it in and it was a it was a clear fall start, but it worked out for us, so we were fine.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh Kitley was on one today.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: He really wanted to get tricky in the bowl game, and I can appreciate that.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: I I bet the guys had a lot of fun with it, but uh, you know, I'm just if it's not Donovan Smith, maybe don't throw in another quarterback and receiver.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: Just an idea.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: That plays the the Baron Morton pelvic thrust.
- 15:19SPEAKER_05: That's that's that's the that's the play.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the one play that worked.
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: I I'm with you.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, I thought we were getting a little too tricky too, but we wouldn't be saying this had it worked.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: But um it's true.
- 15:31SPEAKER_05: I I really love the guts to just to just be flooring it the entire game, like I said before.
- 15:37SPEAKER_05: Like just not not going easy, like not not playing soft, just like going for all the all the money there.
- 15:43SPEAKER_05: Um, but dude, Tyler was a stud.
- 15:45SPEAKER_05: Is Tyler is Tyler Shuck the Texas Tech's best running back right now?
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: People some people are saying uh Tyler Shuck will be is the number one running back at Texas Tech.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: Um, no, but I wanted to keep speaking on Shuck because he's coming back.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: He announced uh with Don Williams after the game.
- 16:05SPEAKER_03: Uh Tyler Shuck is gonna come back for 2023 and uh I guess compete for the job.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it's even a competition at this point uh with Baron Morton.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: Uh wanted to get your thoughts on on Shuck coming back uh for his super senior year um in 2023.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: QB controversy returns, dude.
- 16:24SPEAKER_05: Tyler Shuck's like kind of feeling himself, like he seems to be like really present on Twitter right now, um, feeling really big.
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: You know, he he's MVP of the bowl game, and the dude played his behind op.
- 16:34SPEAKER_05: Like he battled the whole game, he really put his body on the line because I mean Olmus really wanted to do a lot of damage to said body, and he just kept hopping right back up and uh running headfirst into uh the chaos.
- 16:47SPEAKER_05: But I really love it.
- 16:49SPEAKER_05: You know, it's it's hard not to want a kid that plays so hard to come back and have yet another year in the system under Kitley and uh see what he can do in his last year as a college football player before perhaps looking to the big lights of the NFL.
- 17:05SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm happy about it.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's hard not to be, and I think it gives you more confidence going into next year than you would say it's Barry Morton's year.
- 17:13SPEAKER_05: And I'm not saying that that as in Barr Morton's not near uh not near even you know not capable of doing the same things, but obviously Barron Morton's a much younger guy, he doesn't have the experience of starting as a quarterback um for multiple games, and um, I I just think you have a lot of foundation with having Tyler Shuck back.
- 17:32SPEAKER_05: You know, you have the most important player on the team who's proven he can win you some football games coming back.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: I mean, how can you not be excited about that?
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: Tyler Shuck is 7-0 in games he plays for Texas Tech that he starts and finishes.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: He has not lost a game that he started and finished at Texas Tech.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: Um that's not just a stat you breeze by.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: Um clearly uh Tyler Shuck is a dog.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: Um he has shown me stuff these last four games, four or five games, whatever he started, that um I don't think we I don't think we as a fan base had a lot of confidence that he was gonna do that or just stay healthy in general.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: So uh I think he's proven enough for me uh to come back and be and be really confident in Tyler Shuck starting for this team next year.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: Uh whether it's automatic, he won one job already against Baron Morton.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: Uh I imagine there'll be a little bit of a competition, but uh not quite as much as uh as it was last season.
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: So um I would expect Tyler Shuck to be your starter next year.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: Um, I would not expect Baron Morton to start.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Uh I and whether or not that means he leaves for the transfer portal, sits behind Shuck another year, uh, I don't know.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: It I don't think anybody really knows that yet.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: I think we go through spring and see what happens there.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: But uh what I will say is I don't think Baron Morton is going to enter his name in the transfer portal tomorrow.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: You know, I think he's gonna stick with it through spring and uh kind of see how that plays out.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: And uh if he transfers, uh we'll we'll come to that, you know, when it happens, if it happens.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: So um I am confident in Tyler Shuck starting for this team next year.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, dude had a great game, had a great end of the year, um, has shown some stuff that I I don't think any of us really saw coming.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: So shouts out to him.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: He deserved that MVP.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: And uh let's ride.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this is the guy that you were expecting, whatever Wells uh got him out of the transfer portal.
- 19:32SPEAKER_05: Um, tremendous.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: Um tremendous.
- 19:35SPEAKER_05: So I I'm very I'm really happy about it.
- 19:37SPEAKER_05: And I don't I don't know if there's much more to say.
- 19:38SPEAKER_05: And I like that you're you know talking about Baron Morton too.
- 19:41SPEAKER_05: And I it sounds like you actually have some real concern about him entering the transfer portal.
- 19:46SPEAKER_05: Um, come come I could uh I don't know, but I don't think he will.
- 19:52SPEAKER_05: Um I don't think he will because I mean he's what he he has four years left.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Three after this year, so he's a red shirt freshman this year.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't know if it does he get a COVID year, he might probably get a COVID year, so yeah, he might get a COVID year.
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he yeah, three regardless, three or four years so to spend in college.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: And I I think you know, if you're behind Tyler Shuck, a super senior, a guy a few years older than you, has more experience than you.
- 20:18SPEAKER_05: Um, it's not gonna be a shock that this guy's probably gonna start instead of you.
- 20:21SPEAKER_05: Um, and he takes that time to develop as QB2 in the Kit Lee system.
- 20:26SPEAKER_05: And whenever Shuck graduates, you are the QB one.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: You you there is no competition, and it is you because after that, it's just the freshman talent coming in.
- 20:35SPEAKER_05: And obviously, it won't be you will you will not start a Jake Strong over a Baron Morton at that point in time, even if Jake Strong's obviously really good.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: I mean, yeah, yes, yes, and no, but it's really rare to see a freshman quarterback get out there and start over an experienced one on the team.
- 20:50SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 20:51SPEAKER_05: So, especially with an arm like Baron Morton.
- 20:53SPEAKER_05: I'm just saying, uh, we're probably spending too much time on this.
- 20:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, we'll we'll we'll talk about it more in the offseason.
- 20:58SPEAKER_05: But right now, I think we should feel really good.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: I think you should automatically feel better about our floor next year uh next season and even our ceiling.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: Um, with having the most important guy coming back that's actually shown that he can ball the hell out and like not give up.
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Um, just to move on, I think uh uh good career ender for a lot of guys uh in this bowl game.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: Sir Rodrick had a touchdown.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: He didn't have a huge game on the ground, but he did have a touchdown.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: Uh so good for him to end his career off with yet another touchdown.
- 21:26SPEAKER_03: I believe uh uh he's gonna now be third all-time in rushing touchdowns for Texas Tech, uh, and eighth, I believe, in career rushing yards.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: So unbelievable, unbelievable career for Roddy.
- 21:38SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I think we have a couple guys that are really uh, you know, he's he's he's a tough guy to replace because he is uh you know an all time back here at Texas Tech.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: But uh guys like Cameron Valdez, who almost had that touchdown at the end of the game, if he didn't get it poked out there at the end.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: And uh even guys like Bryson Donnell, um, you know, I think are gonna hold it down.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: Taj Brooks, obviously, gonna be your main guy next year.
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: So Um, really excited.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: Uh glad, glad for Sir Roderick.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: Hope he uh finds a home in the NFL and um, you know, great career capper for him.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: Uh a couple other guys on the defense as well.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: Um, Muddy Waters caught that pick.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, good to see that for him.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: Um Kose Eldridge, I know his eligibility for next year is kind of up in the air right now.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, I know Texas Tech is really heavily you know trying to get him uh that extra year from the NCAA.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: We'll see if that happens.
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: Um, but Adrian Ferrari had a pretty good game, you know, had to play a lot with Ray Shad uh being injured.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: He only played a limited amount, but uh good to see him.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: And then really the rest of them, uh the rest of the guys are coming back.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: So uh oh, Trey Wolf as well.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: Trey Wolf, three of four field goals, three three of three on extra points.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: So he missed one of them, but uh overall, you know, just about uh pretty automatic on those others.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: So uh shouts out to those guys.
- 22:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, what a way to go out, you know, winning winning winning your bowl game in in showy fashion.
- 22:58SPEAKER_05: And it was it was just great to see.
- 22:59SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be weird turning it on the TV next year and not seeing those guys on the on the screen.
- 23:03SPEAKER_05: Um, but dude, obviously this is the way college sports goes, and it's a part of the charm of it.
- 23:08SPEAKER_05: So good luck to them.
- 23:09SPEAKER_05: And uh hopefully we can see some more Red Raiders in the NFL.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: Yep, but there's also on on a bright note for Texas Tech in 2023, uh, 14 seniors are coming back, have decided they all had uh a choice to move on or to uh come back and play their final year here.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: And 14 of them had said they're coming back.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: So that list includes Tyler Shuck, of course.
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: Um, you got Xavier White, who is gonna spend another year.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: He was big in some of those games that Miles Price missed this year.
- 23:37SPEAKER_03: Uh Henry Teeter coming back.
- 23:39SPEAKER_03: He's a you know great tight end option, great blocking uh tight end there.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Uh a couple guys on the offensive line, Dennis Wilburn and Cade Briggs.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: Uh Kate Briggs, a little surprising for me because he didn't play a lot this year uh after you know coming off an all-conference type season.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: Uh, didn't really play.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: But Dennis Wilburn started pretty much every game, if not every game, for Texas Tech.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: So good to good to have him back.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: Um, obviously, we've already announced Tony Bradford, Jalen Hutchings on the D line coming back.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: Uh Miles Cole.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: This is a big one because he had a fleet, he had a few plays this game uh in the olmus in the bowl game that he uh was just an absolute beast and guy's massive.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: He's like 6'6.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: He he looks like Tyree.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, he he's the closest resemblance to Tyree Wilson.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: He's not Tyree Wilson, nobody is, but um, yeah, good to have Miles Cole back.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: Uh Tyreek Matthews is coming back.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, both of your starting cornerbacks for the majority of the year, Ray Shad Williams and Malik Dunlap are coming back.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, obviously, Rabbit has announced he's coming.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: Tyler Owens as well, another safety who's probably going to be a starter for you next year.
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, and Cam Watts as well is coming back.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: So a lot of talent returning on defense, uh, a few guys on offense.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: So good to see that.
- 24:51SPEAKER_05: Dude, I love hearing, I mean, you're listening with defense, especially with that performance in the bowl game we just watched.
- 24:57SPEAKER_05: Those guys were, like we already said, were on fire.
- 25:00SPEAKER_05: I do you wonder if Lane Kiffin didn't expect that?
- 25:04SPEAKER_05: Do you think do you wonder like if that offensive staff just did not expect the sort of ferocity that we were able to shove into the their offense's face?
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think uh, especially on the defensive line, I don't think they were ready.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, you had guys like Vidale Scott have a good game, uh, a Daydere, uh the star young freshman, the only guy we didn't redshirt as a true freshman this year, uh, I think had a pretty solid game.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I I think they saw Tyrese out, and I don't I just don't think Ole Miss brought it.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: I don't think they prepared as well as we did, and I don't think they coached, I mean, uh clearly Joey outcoached Lane Kiffin, you know, by a mile.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: So, you know, whether or not you want to say the bowl game mattered more to us or whatever, uh, you still prepare for games the same way you prepare for every game.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: And uh Joey and the boys at Texas Tech did that, and uh Ole Miss and Lane Train did not.
- 25:56SPEAKER_05: Their running game was going nowhere.
- 25:58SPEAKER_05: We we swallowed them each and every time, and their whole gamble of going for it on fourth down each time blew up in their face almost every single time.
- 26:07SPEAKER_05: And it was, and that's all on the defense, and that was just you know that they were probably the most exciting unit to watch uh Wednesday night, in my opinion, because it's just every single time we found a way to just crush their play.
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: The their their plays blew up nearly every single time, and it was an amazing thing to see.
- 26:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was awesome.
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: We uh we did everything we needed to do to win.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: They only scored 25 points on us.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: Uh defense held it down, and then uh we made Jackson Dart's uh life hectic in this one.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: So uh I think we caused what five turnovers?
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: He had three picks, and I believe they had two fumbles altogether.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: Um, and we capped it all off with uh a big Loick fungy onside kick return touchdown there at the end of the game.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: So uh great game from Loick, great game from uh um uh Jeran Bradley.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: Miles Price had some big plays.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: So uh this receiving core next year is gonna be good.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, having another year of Bradley, another year of Loick, um, you know, guys like Miles Price coming back.
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: It's it's it's gonna be fun.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm so excited for 2023.
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: With Shuck at the helm, too.
- 27:13SPEAKER_05: Man, dude, this is awesome, man.
- 27:15SPEAKER_05: This is sick.
- 27:16SPEAKER_05: It's it's really fun to leave this season going into next season with even higher hopes.
- 27:22SPEAKER_05: Um we we just finished this this season with eight wins.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: First time we've done that in like over a decade.
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: So things are obviously already looking bright.
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: Um, do you want to go ahead and talk about it then?
- 27:32SPEAKER_05: Like with how bright our feature is looking.
- 27:34SPEAKER_05: So you and I have kind of talked about this sort of thing before.
- 27:38SPEAKER_05: Joey McGuire is already inked an extension with the school year one.
- 27:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, initial thoughts.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: Um, initial thoughts.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously you feel good after that bowl game.
- 27:49SPEAKER_03: Um initial thoughts.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: We talked about this last week, actually.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: Um you know it it I didn't I didn't really see the reason for it.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: Um I I love Joey, I love what he's building here.
- 28:02SPEAKER_03: I think we have some serious momentum trending upwards for this program.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Uh, but we've also seen a lot of times where not just Texas Tech, but many teams extend a guy after having one good year.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then uh, you know, eight and five is a good year, especially since we haven't done that since 2013 with Cliff.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and year one coach, you had a really tough schedule, um, you know, and you and you pulled it out.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: You had some a lot of QB injuries you're dealing with, and um, you know, you won some games.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: I I was thrilled with how this season went.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: Um I I just you're this is a quick extension.
- 28:42SPEAKER_03: I think everybody can realize that it's uh um, you know, you do have a lot of recruiting momentum, there's a lot of positives for it, and you know, I'm not upset that Joey Maguire got an extension.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: I'm excited for it.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: Uh everybody is, and they should be, but it's just quick.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: We've seen it by it.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: We signed on until 2028, you know.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh, if the money was bigger, I would have been a little more upset.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: It's really only a one million dollar a year raise for Joey.
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: Oh, you know, uh it's it's a yeah, it's a big deal.
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: But in the grand scheme, you know, yeah, I know it's not it's not like we're dealing with a Jimbo contract here or a Lane Kipping contract.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and and Joey seems as genuine as it comes and really seems like he wants to be here long term.
- 29:25SPEAKER_03: So uh I'm all for it.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: Uh go, you know, uh let's let's go.
- 29:30SPEAKER_05: Let's let's let's go.
- 29:32SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 29:33SPEAKER_05: Um, I I I you know, obviously, I think I've just kind of taken the stance of we might as well be positive about it and just look at why it's a good thing right now.
- 29:41SPEAKER_05: Um, because you know, you lock down a guy that's done something in Lubbock that hasn't happened in a really long time, um, with uh some real recruiting momentum, like he stated.
- 29:49SPEAKER_05: And I think, you know, with this extension, you also kind of send a message to the players and their crew say, you know, we're we're dedicated to supporting this.
- 29:57SPEAKER_05: So if you want to come here, he will be here.
- 29:59SPEAKER_05: You know, it's not like he'll be snagged up or anything like that because everyone wants continuity in their lives, um, no matter what how old you are, what you're doing.
- 30:07SPEAKER_05: Um, and I I think it's a great thing, and he really represents TechStech really well.
- 30:11SPEAKER_05: Um, he seems like a very nothing but class, unlike the uh coach we just played in the bowl game.
- 30:16SPEAKER_05: Um, so it's just it's great to have a captain you can absolutely swear your allegiance to, and and it's good to have uh a guy that's hopefully gonna be here until he retires if all things go as as as they seem to be.
- 30:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think we're all as Texas Tech fans a little spurned by uh by CB over there.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, the uh arrested man himself.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Uh allegedly.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: Alleged, yeah.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: Let's not get into that.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: That's too much.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: But um no, I think I think we are a little spurned by the beard thing where he, you know, we thought he was here for the long term and then he ends up going for UT.
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: So Joey, I I think is much different.
- 30:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, I would hope he's much different than what that guy is.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: Um, and you know, let's ride.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: I am uh you got a winning conference record for the first time since 2009.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: Uh you won eight games.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: Uh you you won the bowl game convincingly, uh, and everybody seems bought in.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, every player that was that was talked to that had a post-game presser just kept stating how much the program has changed.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: And I think it's interesting because I saw some I saw a tweet about actually about Alan Bowman, who is currently on Michigan but re-entered his name in the transfer portal.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: And uh uh somebody asked him uh why he left Texas Tech.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: And his response was, Well, I wanted some place that had a winning culture um that was different.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: And I think at the time we did not.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: I think everything from the Wells era, everybody, every player that's been asked about you know what's different from Joey, what's different this year, is you just don't have that losing mindset.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: I think a lot of guys, a lot of these previous teams just kind of uh they've even said it.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: Reggie Pearson said it when he was interviewed in the uh pregame or pre uh pre-season, that when you were playing UT or OU, you just kind of expected to lose as a Texas Tech Red Raider.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: And that's just not the case anymore.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: So uh the mindset of this program has changed, the brand has changed, it is uh it is on an upward trajectory, and I think you're seeing that uh you know tenfold.
- 32:23SPEAKER_05: I think with this Joey McGuire program is what you've got is you got confidence.
- 32:27SPEAKER_05: I think you know, you see you see a belief in these players and they're having fun, they're having a ton of fun, and whenever your teams are having fun, that means they're they've absolutely bought into what's happening, they want to be there, and they will they will actually play harder on the field when they're having fun.
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: So, and whenever you're having fun, you're winning.
- 32:45SPEAKER_05: And winning is whenever you're winning, you're having fun.
- 32:47SPEAKER_05: So this is a clear reflection here of uh of that, and I I hope see it continue.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, top 25 class as well.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: I believe we finished consensus 23rd best class in the nation.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, that is a huge upgrade from these past few years.
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: So uh imagine when Joey gets his guys, it's one of the fastest classes in the nation, if not the fastest class.
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: Um, you got some athletes, we're we're doing things right.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: Um, the only thing back to the extension thing, the only thing that worries me is you know, you look right across uh right across the state in Waco, um, you know, Dave Aranda wins the Big 12.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: They give him a massive extension, and uh he goes six and six the next year and really has a has a poor showing.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: Um so you know, stuff like that could happen.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: But I I'm not gonna think negatively right now with this contract extension.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: Like you said, I think uh we're doing we're doing what we need to do to keep a guy here long term um that seems like he wants to be here long term.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: So let's go.
- 33:44SPEAKER_05: I mean, if I was in a in Baylor's position, I would not I would still not be upset about the contract extension because we you know what I want is I want those runs for the Big 12 title, and I would expect down years within within the program.
- 34:00SPEAKER_05: It's just going to happen.
- 34:01SPEAKER_05: It's just kind of the the rhythm of the game, you know, especially at a school like Texas Tech.
- 34:06SPEAKER_05: So it's I I would I I I would still not be upset about it.
- 34:10SPEAKER_05: So if if that is indeed our fate to have that kind of you know up and down every once in a while, I mean uh what's what's what's the problem with that?
- 34:16SPEAKER_05: I mean, they still went to a bowl game, kind of a bad loss there, not gonna lie, but um we got we gotta respect the troops though.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: They did good for them, good for Baylor respecting the troops and and you know, Air Force grinding out that one.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: Uh Big 12 not doing too hot in the bowl games this year.
- 34:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, Texas Tech is holding it holding it down.
- 34:36SPEAKER_05: My back is hurting as a Texas Tech fan, you know.
- 34:39SPEAKER_05: We are carrying this entire conference.
- 34:41SPEAKER_05: Man, I'm just very sad that OU and UT lost too.
- 34:44SPEAKER_05: Like that is that is sad, dude.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: That is I'm just I'm burning up here.
- 34:49SPEAKER_05: I'm just OU's first losing season in a while.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: Oh man, you hate to see Oklahoma lose a bowl game they never should have been in in the first place.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: You hate to see Texas lose an Alamo bowl in front of all their fans.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, you just Quinn Ewers have, you know, they're turning on him.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: Uh Xavier Worthy is dropping easy touchdowns.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: He's probably gonna enter the transfer portal.
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: Bijan's gone.
- 35:13SPEAKER_03: Man, Texas is really trending upwards.
- 35:16SPEAKER_05: They're trending upwards.
- 35:17SPEAKER_05: Um, absolutely.
- 35:18SPEAKER_05: No, nowhere to go about up.
- 35:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, I just saw a tweet that said uh Mr.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: Sark himself is uh two and seven against ranked opponents.
- 35:28SPEAKER_05: Um, but the thing is, is all these programs are below Texas.
- 35:32SPEAKER_05: They're Texas, they're UT.
- 35:33SPEAKER_05: So what happens is all these other teams just bring their absolute best, but to Texas, it's just another game.
- 35:40SPEAKER_05: That's why they lose so many.
- 35:41SPEAKER_05: It's just another game, you know.
- 35:42SPEAKER_05: So what are they supposed to do when it's just another game?
- 35:44SPEAKER_05: Win?
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: Hey, when when every when every game, when every team you're playing against, it's their Super Bowl.
- 35:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, what are you gonna do?
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: What are you supposed to do?
- 35:52SPEAKER_04: What are you used to?
- 35:54SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 35:55SPEAKER_04: I mean up so just drinking up.
- 35:59SPEAKER_04: Stink, we're better.
- 36:00SPEAKER_04: Sounds like Ewers should have gone the tech, but we have Tyler Shuck instead, buddy.
- 36:04SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry.
- 36:05SPEAKER_04: I don't, I don't want, I don't want you here.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: No, we're okay, we're okay without him, I would say.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: Um, I went out and uh I tweeted out something a couple days ago.
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: Um in the year 2022, there is one uh there's still one conference game left in the year, and that's when we open up against TCU and basketball uh this season on New Year's Eve.
- 36:25SPEAKER_03: But in the year of 2022, Texas Tech has a winning record against every Big 12 team except for Oklahoma and TCU uh in the three major sports in football, men's basketball, and baseball.
- 36:39SPEAKER_03: Um, we went five and one against both Texas and West Virginia this year.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: Um, we went three and one against Iowa State.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Iowa State, of course, does not have a baseball team, so we could not uh we only played them four times in 2022 in these three sports.
- 36:53SPEAKER_03: Uh Baylor, we went four and two, Oklahoma State, we went four and two, um, Kansas State, we went five and three, Kansas, we went four and three, and then OU and TCU.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, we had losing records too.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: Oklahoma, we were four and five, and TCU really had our number this year.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: One and five against TCU in 2022.
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: That's fine.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, we'll move on.
- 37:12SPEAKER_03: But to see that stat, to see where we're at as an athletic program in the three major men's sports in uh in the current state, uh, is awesome.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: It it's really cool seeing Texas Tech just go out in every sport and be dominant in baseball and basketball, make a sweet 16.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: Football, you make a good bowl game, you win eight wins for the first time since uh 2013.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: And uh you're just on an upward trajectory in every single sport.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: It's really cool.
- 37:42SPEAKER_05: Across the board, man.
- 37:44SPEAKER_05: And what's so great about that is it's led by three dudes you actually believe in.
- 37:48SPEAKER_05: You know, like there's no question in the three guys at the helm of those programs.
- 37:52SPEAKER_05: So it like that was a really great year in review, there, sir.
- 37:55SPEAKER_05: I would say the grades are looking way up whenever you uh break it down like that.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: So I I I would give this year an absolute A with a flat out.
- 38:04SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm giving it an A.
- 38:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's absolutely a great year for all three sports, football, especially.
- 38:11SPEAKER_03: You give them an A.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, they had a they had a great year, they weren't expected to do what they did, and they freaking they they nailed it, man.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, really excited about about everything football-wise, which is something we are not used to here.
- 38:23SPEAKER_03: It's been a while since we've said that, dude.
- 38:26SPEAKER_03: Been a while, been a while, but it's nice, it's nice.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: We're on an we're good at football, man.
- 38:30SPEAKER_05: Wow, yeah.
- 38:31SPEAKER_05: Was that the first time this has ever been said on this podcast?
- 38:34SPEAKER_05: I think so.
- 38:34SPEAKER_05: We did I bring the seal there now.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: A lot of people were Texas Tech fans long before we were and got to experience some cool stuff with the with the leech era and everything.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: We didn't get that, so we're not used to this.
- 38:46SPEAKER_03: We started, we were fans, maybe Tristan, you're probably a fan, what starting in 2012?
- 38:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right before we got there.
- 38:52SPEAKER_03: I was 14 Kingsbury, yeah.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, beginning of Kingsbury is when we started, and uh um, so this is the best football we have seen as diehard Red Raiders.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: So this is we're we're through the moon.
- 39:08SPEAKER_05: The best part it doesn't feel fluky either, like this feels real, you know, and with the especially with the uh the backfilling and the recruiting to show for it and the staff around Joey to really uh to really show for that.
- 39:19SPEAKER_05: Uh DeRuder is the man.
- 39:21SPEAKER_05: Uh DeRuder is the best defensive coordinator I've ever seen us have.
- 39:24SPEAKER_05: I hope we can keep him around.
- 39:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 39:27SPEAKER_03: And he's got some serious talent and he's got some guys returning.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it's gonna be hard to replace Tyree Wilson, but uh with some of these freshmen, some of these highly touted defensive linemen recruits coming in.
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm excited.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: I'm excited for it.
- 39:40SPEAKER_03: Everything's exciting, it's great.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: Football is good to be a red raider, dang it.
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: Good freaking time to be a red raider.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: All right, so as many of y'all could probably tell, we recorded that first part of the podcast on January 30th.
- 39:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, and we did record a segment about basketball, but because I am lazy, uh, we're we're if we release the episode when we're gonna release it, it's not gonna sound good.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: Nothing's gonna hold up.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: So um I'm here.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: Tristan is not gonna be here for the basketball section, uh, as he had some very important matters to tend to.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: Uh, but I'm gonna sit here and kind of recap the first two Big 12 games.
- 40:23SPEAKER_03: And um, but first I wanted to start off with because we just got the news today, actually, as of um five o'clock on January 5th.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: Um, Texas fired Chris Beard.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: We haven't talked a lot about the whole beard situation on the podcast.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: We've said some things on Twitter and everything of that nature, but uh we haven't really discussed it on the podcast, and there was a reason for that.
- 40:46SPEAKER_03: We didn't want to uh get in with the violent nature of everything and um just with the uh it was still unknown, really, to this point.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: And so um, you know, Texas announced today that they uh they have fired Chris Beard.
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: They have not parted ways with Chris Beard, they have fired Chris Beard, and I think that's an important note uh to take in here because you know he uh clearly Texas found something or discovered something in their investigation, or within you know, the whole uh just the whole situation that has unfolded with the legal process and everything, they've discovered that um Chris Beard uh no longer should be the head coach of uh Texas men's basketball.
- 41:33SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, I gotta say, first and foremost, as a as a huge University of Texas hater, um, that they absolutely did the right thing here and they've handled this situation beautifully.
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: And I think you have to give them some credit for that.
- 41:47SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it did come out.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: Matt Norlander, I believe, tweeted out that uh Chris Delcante, this was not his decision, and that this decision came above his head.
- 41:56SPEAKER_03: So I'm not gonna give a lot of credit here to CDC.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: Uh still not a big fan of that guy.
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: I think he's uh, you know, kind of scum, but uh that's besides the point.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: Uh the University of Texas, whoever made the decision, whoever decided it, made the right decision.
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: They parted ways with with a guy who um, you know, was uh sent to jail for domestic violence.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: And you know, I think if you read the affidavit, it kind of says everything you need to.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: I and I know his fiancee walked back a lot of those reports and walked back her statement and said, hey, you know, this wasn't, but uh, you know, and I'm not one who's an expert in domestic violence by any means.
- 42:36SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't want to pretend that I am, but you know, clearly the University of Texas wanted to move on and they had proper cause to fire Chris Beard and they did it.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: And so, um, you know, from a Texas Tech fan's perspective, you obviously you have to talk about it because this was our coach two years ago, and we were all it was a huge deal when he left for Texas and everything of that nature.
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: So, for everybody saying, you know, don't talk about other people's coaches, I mean, this is a clearly a separate situation, in my opinion.
- 43:06SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, uh, I I I'm I'm happy for Texas that they moved on from somebody that uh potentially committed these acts and was arrested for them and charged for them.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, from that nature, I think it's a good thing.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, we'll see, we'll see what happens.
- 43:27SPEAKER_03: College sports are scummy a lot of the times, and uh, we don't really want to admit that.
- 43:32SPEAKER_03: And I uh this is kind of a rare non-scummy moment from a big university.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: So, you know, give credit to Texas for doing their due diligence here and and you know, making the right decision.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: So that's all we'll say.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: That's all I'll say about it for for this episode.
- 43:49SPEAKER_03: Uh, but let's recap Texas Tech, these last two Big 12 games.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: Um, you start off 0 2, uh, you play TCU, who is now 2 0 in college.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Conference.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Um, you play Kansas, who is now two-0 in conference.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: Um, let's talk about the TCU game first.
- 44:08SPEAKER_03: First half, you looked electric, you were moving the ball really well.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: Um, you were playing really good defense.
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: I thought you came out with kind of what we thought this team could be eventually.
- 44:19SPEAKER_03: We hadn't seen a lot of it.
- 44:21SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, those three games prior to the TCU game, you scored 100 plus points.
- 44:27SPEAKER_03: You were really rolling on the offensive end of the floor and defensively.
- 44:31SPEAKER_03: Um, you're kicking teams, butt.
- 44:33SPEAKER_03: Granted, they were really bad teams, but you were still beating them like you should.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: Um, then you go into TCU first half, you play great.
- 44:41SPEAKER_03: Um, despite Kevin O'Banner getting in foul trouble, playing only six minutes in the first half.
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: Uh KJ Allen ends up having a good first half.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: Jalen Tyson has a really good first half.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: Um, Pop is going crazy.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Um, Davion Harman's having a good first half, and you're excited.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: You're up by 13 or so, 12 or so going into the halftime.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: And then TCU comes out and just absolutely fires away the first two minutes, and they already tied a game.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: I I think it took them less than three minutes to get right back in it, and that's kind of a sign of a young team.
- 45:16SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, this team is still learning a lot.
- 45:19SPEAKER_03: They are uh the young guys are discovering what Big 12 plays about.
- 45:24SPEAKER_03: You know, just because you're up 13 at halftime, that didn't mean anything.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: And I think Texas Tech got a good taste of that.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, Kevin O'Banner couldn't get in rhythm all night, basically, after going with foul trouble early in the game.
- 45:38SPEAKER_03: And um, credit to Emmanuel Miller, too.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: He played really good defense on him all night.
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: Gotta gotta give him a shout out.
- 45:44SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, uh, Pop, I think you can't talk about either of these games without talking about how pop has been.
- 45:52SPEAKER_03: He's averaging 17 and a half points a game.
- 45:54SPEAKER_03: He's hit, I think, nine combined three-pointers in the first two Big 12 games of his career as a true freshman.
- 46:01SPEAKER_03: Um, you're really seeing what this kid can be and what he can become.
- 46:06SPEAKER_03: And um, I think after watching the majority of this season of Pop Isaacs, you need to be excited.
- 46:14SPEAKER_03: You're really excited about uh the potential of this guy.
- 46:18SPEAKER_03: And uh really you're just wondering how long is he gonna stay at Texas Tech, you know, with and and not necessarily via transfer, but for the NBA, because he's really showing a skill set here and a shooting ability that is unlike somebody that you've had really at Texas Tech.
- 46:37SPEAKER_03: So um glad to have him.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: Very, very happy um with Pop Isaacs.
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, that second half of TCU, you fell apart.
- 46:48SPEAKER_03: That's really what happened.
- 46:49SPEAKER_03: You fell apart, Mike Miles went crazy.
- 46:51SPEAKER_03: They showed their veteran leadership that they have on that team.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: All five starters returned for TCU.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: Um, and Mike Miles is a Big 12 player of the year candidate.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: I don't think anybody can deny that.
- 47:02SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah, you made some mistakes down the stretch.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: You had a ton of turnovers.
- 47:06SPEAKER_03: I think you had 22 combined as a team, 23 potentially.
- 47:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, you weren't making your free throws.
- 47:11SPEAKER_03: There was a lot of things Texas Tech could have done better, but also TCU brought it in the second half, and you got to give them some credit.
- 47:17SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, 23 turnovers is ridiculous.
- 47:21SPEAKER_03: That's way, way too much.
- 47:22SPEAKER_03: You try to keep it under 10 every game if you can.
- 47:25SPEAKER_03: Uh 23 is overly ridiculous.
- 47:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, but again, this is the first Big 12 game of the year with a brand new team.
- 47:31SPEAKER_03: So um, I was willing to look past TCU.
- 47:34SPEAKER_03: Um Kansas comes to town.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: Uh 30-game home win streak riding on the line, Kevin McCullough coming back um to Lubbock for the first time.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: And I think if you follow us on Twitter, I think you kind of got my full reaction of the whole deal.
- 47:56SPEAKER_03: Um the refs missed two calls at the end of the game.
- 47:59SPEAKER_03: And I am the last person, I am one of the last people to complain about referees.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: If you've been listening to this podcast for a while now, you will know that I hate complaining about the officials because there are people out there that complain about the officials for everything.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: And I'm just not one of those guys, but to blatantly miss two, not just one, two egregious fouls.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, Jalen Wilson tackled Daniel Boccio at the end of the game.
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: So the refs miss that one, and then Pop goes, and I I can I can kind of sort of understand missing the Jalen Wilson foul because all three refs were eyes on the ball.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: But Pop goes and drives right before that.
- 48:53SPEAKER_03: Right right after the the Jalen Wilson foul, I should say.
- 48:57SPEAKER_03: Pop finds a way, drives in.
- 49:02SPEAKER_03: Uh I I can't remember if it was Dewan Harris or if it was uh Petiford, but one of those guards who was guarding him trips and then Pop trips over the guy who trips.
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: In every in every book, in every rule book, it's a foul.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: He fouled Pop Isaacs going to the wreck.
- 49:25SPEAKER_03: They didn't call it.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: McCullough picked it up.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: They he threw it to KJ Adams, who finished on the other end, who was fouled by Daniel Boccio, and they didn't call that one.
- 49:32SPEAKER_03: So, really, the refs missed three calls at the end of the game, two of which were against Kansas, one was against Tech.
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: The the Boccio foul wouldn't have even happened if they called the first two.
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: So, you know, it's it's upsetting to lose to a team that I thought you really outperformed in the second half against.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: Um and uh and it would have been your first big signature win of the year, which Texas Tech d does not have any signature wins going in so far.
- 50:03SPEAKER_03: We're 10 and 4, all 10 of those were against terrible teams.
- 50:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, all 10 of those wins are against terrible teams, all four of those losses are against pretty good teams.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: So, you know, uh that hurts to see.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: And a lot of that has to do with the scheduling, and we've already had that rant on this podcast, so we're not gonna do it again here, but um you know, if you're Texas Tech right now, you really need to start winning games.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: And I don't want to say this Oklahoma game is a must-win, but you definitely don't want to lose it because starting 0-3 in Big 12 play, you're playing at home, you know, you're playing a an Oklahoma team who is still good.
- 50:47SPEAKER_03: Um they're every team in the Big 12 right now is in like the top 37 of Ken Pom.
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: So no team in the Big 12 is bad.
- 50:55SPEAKER_03: We've all known this, but you need to win some games if you want to get in the NCAA tournament.
- 51:01SPEAKER_03: You need to boost your resume a little bit.
- 51:03SPEAKER_03: And I don't know if going 500 in conference is gonna do it for you because you don't have any signature wins outside of what is the Big 12 now, or you well, currently you don't have any, but you know, from now on, you can only get signature wins from Big 12 teams, plus you play LSU.
- 51:21SPEAKER_03: LSU's ended up being pretty decent, so um, that's gonna be a tough one in Baton Rouge, but um you know, just just uh you need to get some wins here, and the Oklahoma game is very, very important.
- 51:35SPEAKER_03: Um, couple things on that Davion Harmon revenge game.
- 51:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, he played at OU for two years, transferred to Oregon, transferred to Texas Tech.
- 51:43SPEAKER_03: So I don't know if he has any ill will towards Oklahoma.
- 51:47SPEAKER_03: I think he transferred, he didn't transfer for bad reasons.
- 51:49SPEAKER_03: I think it was because Lon Kruger retired and that was his guy, and so he found another spot.
- 51:53SPEAKER_03: I could be mistaken, but I think that's the reason.
- 51:56SPEAKER_03: Um, regardless, he's playing his old team.
- 51:58SPEAKER_03: You got to get up for your old team.
- 52:00SPEAKER_03: Um, and and let's go, man.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: Let's get a let's get a win.
- 52:05SPEAKER_03: Let's get Boccho healthy.
- 52:06SPEAKER_03: He's been dealing with some flu stuff.
- 52:08SPEAKER_03: Um, KO, the first game was not present.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: The second game was crazy, went off.
- 52:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, was what you need out of Kevin O'Banner, is what happened in the Kansas game.
- 52:18SPEAKER_03: So hopefully you get another uh another helping of that here against Oklahoma.
- 52:23SPEAKER_03: Um, you need more from Davion.
- 52:25SPEAKER_03: Harman was horrible in the Kansas game.
- 52:28SPEAKER_03: He got benched for Lamar Washington.
- 52:30SPEAKER_03: Um he was he was solid, I thought, in the TCU game, but um, you know, a lot of people are calling for Harman to get benched.
- 52:37SPEAKER_03: I don't think we have to go that far yet.
- 52:38SPEAKER_03: But um yeah, I think you need some more from Davion.
- 52:42SPEAKER_03: He's only him between him and Pop Isaacs right now, through two Big 12 games, you only have four assists combined between those two.
- 52:48SPEAKER_03: Those are your two leading guards, your two leading facilitators.
- 52:52SPEAKER_03: These are guys that need to find open open shooters or find bocho or ko down low in uh what this offense likes to do.
- 53:00SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, uh just find a way, just find a way to get more involved.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: And um, I I have a good feeling about this Oklahoma game.
- 53:09SPEAKER_03: I really do.
- 53:09SPEAKER_03: I think we played well against two really good teams.
- 53:13SPEAKER_03: So that's another part of this is that TCU and Kansas are really good teams.
- 53:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, Kansas is number three in the country.
- 53:19SPEAKER_03: TCU is probably gonna be a top 10, if not top 15, team in the country after this coming week.
- 53:25SPEAKER_03: They just beat Baylor.
- 53:27SPEAKER_03: So, you know, there's no shame in losing to these teams, but you also need to start winning some games.
- 53:32SPEAKER_03: Um, but overall, man, I think the bench, uh I don't know how you can have any confidence in a lot of these guys.
- 53:44SPEAKER_03: I think KJ Allen had a good first half against uh against TCU, but wasn't really involved against Kansas.
- 53:52SPEAKER_03: You know, Elijah Fisher is kind of unplayable at this point.
- 53:56SPEAKER_03: Um, if you've watched his limited minutes against Kansas and really a lot of his minutes throughout the year, um he just hasn't been good.
- 54:03SPEAKER_03: He's so everybody asking for Elijah Fisher, and I'm I'm one of them.
- 54:08SPEAKER_03: I was one of them.
- 54:09SPEAKER_03: Uh it's not good.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: It's not good right now.
- 54:12SPEAKER_03: So um I thought Lamar's been good.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: Lamar Washington's been really good over the last couple games.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: Uh he he obviously took over in the in the game closing minutes against Kansas when he made your comeback.
- 54:24SPEAKER_03: So I think we'll see an increase in Lamar's minutes uh throughout the season.
- 54:28SPEAKER_03: Uh he's a dog, dude.
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: I I really enjoy him playing.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: Um Robert Jennings kind of was forced to play a lot in that TCU game because of the KO fouls, but um, I don't know if you'll see a ton of him.
- 54:41SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, you'll virtually see none of him once Dawes comes back.
- 54:45SPEAKER_03: You haven't gotten anything from Kerwin.
- 54:49SPEAKER_03: Um, Kerwin Walden or Demarian Williams.
- 54:51SPEAKER_03: Demarian Williams hadn't played a minute in the first two Big 12 games.
- 54:54SPEAKER_03: This is a guy who I thought could potentially start for you at the beginning of the year.
- 54:58SPEAKER_03: And he just does not look confident uh uh in the minutes that he has played.
- 55:03SPEAKER_03: He's had one, I think, one good game, Demarion Williams.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: And so I don't blame Mark Adams for not using him.
- 55:08SPEAKER_03: Uh Kerwin.
- 55:11SPEAKER_03: I just like you think a prospect that gets recruited to North Carolina, one of the top guys in his class, um you can see the ability that he has.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: And he's 6'7, like he's a lengthy, you know, he's an athletic player, and you can uh everybody uh raves about the shooting, but he hasn't shown it.
- 55:40SPEAKER_03: And he doesn't look confident when he's out there.
- 55:42SPEAKER_03: He's making silly mistakes, he's I mean, missing shots by a mile.
- 55:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's different, man.
- 55:51SPEAKER_03: You there's practice players and then there's game players.
- 55:55SPEAKER_03: And I mean, you haven't you haven't had a lot from the guys that you thought were gonna be some gamers here.
- 56:00SPEAKER_03: So um you need more from your bench, and I think that's gonna help when Dawes gets back.
- 56:05SPEAKER_03: I think whoever whatever lineup we decide to go to, uh, when Dawes is back, uh we'll decide, but we'll cross that bridge whenever we get there.
- 56:15SPEAKER_03: I I have I guess one more thing.
- 56:17SPEAKER_03: One more thing.
- 56:18SPEAKER_03: Uh Jalen Tyson.
- 56:20SPEAKER_03: So Jalen Tyson is a dynamic player, great athlete, solid shooter, great defender.
- 56:32SPEAKER_03: Why does he not have the ball in his hands more?
- 56:36SPEAKER_03: Is what I'm wondering.
- 56:38SPEAKER_03: Um I don't know if it's him just not being very aggressive.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it's uh the scheme where he just doesn't get a lot of shots and a lot of opportunities, but this guy needs to shoot 12-15 times a game, in my opinion.
- 56:56SPEAKER_03: I think he's doing everything you could ask from him defensively.
- 56:59SPEAKER_03: He had a great game against Kansas, had three steals, probably like three or five other deflections on top of that.
- 57:05SPEAKER_03: You know, he's rebounding well.
- 57:07SPEAKER_03: But on the offensive end of the floor, I want the ball in his hand, man.
- 57:11SPEAKER_03: Especially with Harmon and Pop not really uh, you know, getting those assists and and and moving the ball a ton.
- 57:19SPEAKER_03: I want to see Jalen Tyson with the ball in his hands more because we've seen him kind of take over as the main guy at points in the game.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: And uh so I don't know.
- 57:30SPEAKER_03: I just want to see more Jalen Tyson.
- 57:32SPEAKER_03: I I don't know if I just expect more out of Jalen Tyson or what, but I just think he can be a really, really terrific player.
- 57:38SPEAKER_03: And so I'd like to see, I'd like to see him shoot more, like to see him get to the rim and get fouled and just be more aggressive on the offensive end, really.
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: So yeah, Texas Tech 0-2 in conference, it's far from over.
- 57:50SPEAKER_03: I think this team is is fighting like any Mark Adams Texas Tech team that we've seen the past few years.
- 57:59SPEAKER_03: I I I I don't have a lot of woe is me attitude about this team right now.
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: I just think, you know, eventually this resume is gonna catch up with you, and you have to really get some key wins here.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: Um the good news about being in the Big 12 conference is every win uh is a quad one or quad two, high quad two win.
- 58:18SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, this Oklahoma game, I'm not sure if that's quite going to be a quad one win, uh, but it's still gonna be a solid dub and something to get some confidence in your in your young team.
- 58:28SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, hopefully, hopefully we get Fardos back soon.
- 58:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, he could be really, really helpful for this unit.
- 58:36SPEAKER_03: Um, I think adding another big in there, especially with Bacho and and really being the only big, uh, true big, I should say.
- 58:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, I guess you can consider KJ Allen a big, but he's not.
- 58:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, 6'5, 6'6, whatever.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, it is what it is.
- 58:53SPEAKER_03: I I I keep supporting this team.
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: I think it's uh I think this team has a lot going for it in terms of talent, and some of these young guys are really, really playing well, Pop and Lamar specifically.
- 59:05SPEAKER_03: Um, and you really got some veterans that that have stepped up at times and have not.
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, and if you get a good Harman game and a good old banner game all in one, who I mean you got a good team, you can beat a lot of teams that way.
- 59:20SPEAKER_03: So um sorry if this sounded negative.
- 59:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, you're 0-2 in conference, so I guess you couldn't really be that positive, but I tried to be a little positive about it.
- 59:30SPEAKER_03: But um, we'll see.
- 59:31SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 59:32SPEAKER_03: Oklahoma coming up on Saturday.
- 59:34SPEAKER_03: I believe it's a night game.
- 59:35SPEAKER_03: It's in Lubbock, so good opportunity to get back on your feet.
- 59:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, I believe you have Iowa State after that.
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: So Iowa State looking good early too.
- 59:43SPEAKER_03: So, you know, it's always a grind in the Big 12.
- 59:47SPEAKER_03: Um, don't give up though, and uh keep grinding if you're Texas Tech basketball.
- 59:52SPEAKER_03: So um, I'll go ahead and swing it over to our song of the week that we recorded on January 30th.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_03: So sorry for not getting around to editing this in time, but uh hopefully y'all still enjoyed it anyway.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: But here you go.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: Oh, well, did you have anything else before we hit up our song of the week?
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I do.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_05: Um, I think that we uh I think we forgot to say play the song.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's thank you.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_03: Thank you for reminding everybody.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_03: We uh apologize for not playing it sooner, but we did remember we're gonna play the song.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_03: Play the song.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_06: Red raid is red.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_03: Red Raider indeed came at the rebels.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_05: He he did.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_05: He did he did indeed do that with a fury of a West Texas win.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_05: I mean, Houston is West Texas now, um, but I'm glad the win came through.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_03: The billboard confirms that Houston is West Texas.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_03: Uh this is a this is a fantastic trend.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_03: We love it.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_03: Um, all right, buddy, song of the week.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_05: Go ahead.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_05: So the song of the week I'm gonna be rolling with you here is a guy I did, it probably would have been a couple of years ago now.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_05: Um, but he's got a great honky tonk rock and roll sound.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_05: His name is Gabe Lee, and he dropped a new album recently.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_05: I think this is a guy that deserves way more credit than he is.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_05: He's kind of like on the outside of country music, and he kind of owns that.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_05: Like it's kind of his vibe.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, his new album, The Hometown Kid.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_05: And I'm gonna go off the what the standout song of this album.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go with Rusty, and it's just a very easy-to-listen to country rock and jam.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_05: And the dude just really embraces that uh honky tonking rock and rolling sound, and I really love it.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_03: Gabley has some bangers.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna have to listen to this one.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_03: I haven't listened to the new album yet, but uh, it's on the list.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_03: Right on, man.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_03: I am gonna do one that I think might surprise you a little bit that uh, you know, I'm doing this.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_03: Um we'll stick it, we'll stick it with the West Texas flair here.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_03: Um, country song just released yesterday.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_03: Yesterday.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_03: Mason and the gin line.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_03: Ooh, great local band from the Lubbock, Texas.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, they just released a song called Leaves of Fall.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_03: Banger.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm excited to hear this.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_03: Great song, great song.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_03: They just released it.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, always support uh the West Texas people, uh, the bands a lot of great music from the Hub City.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, Mason in the Gin line.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_03: That was Leaves of Fall.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_05: Which I think we got some two banging picks on this banger of an episode, sir.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_03: So uh happy to be back in the studio.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_03: Happy to be back talking about Texas Tech, ready for basketball season.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_03: Great way to end football season.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_03: It's a great time to be a freaking red raider, baby.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_03: Yes, sir.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_03: 100%, man.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
