- 1:11before one O clock into the second hour of the program.
- 1:15Eugene Repay, who covers the Iowa State Cyclones for the Des
- 1:18Moines Register. Eugene will be joining us and
- 1:22he'll talk cyclones with us for a whole 15 minutes or
- 1:25thereabouts. And then Mike Palm, the vice
- 1:27president of operations at Circus Sports.
- 1:29Will we get the latest on the Super Bowl wagering for Mike?
- 1:32Kinda, I'm guessing calm before the storm.
- 1:35Big bets come in early. Then take a few days off and,
- 1:38well, we'll see if that's indeed the landscape of how this Super
- 1:41Bowl is shaping up. The number is 4 1/2 everywhere.
- 1:44That was the last time I checked, I think maybe one of
- 1:47them. What is it about hard?
- 1:50Hard Rock's not in our state, right?
- 1:52You can't bet on the Hard Rock app can.
- 1:54You. I don't believe so.
- 1:55I. Don't think so either and their
- 1:56numbers are never like the rest of them.
- 1:59They fluctuate either way anyways, for what it's worth.
- 2:03But we will talk to Mike Palm, Trent, we'll make some picks and
- 2:05we'll turn things over to off the bench with Lucas and Sean
- 2:08coming up here at 2:00. So last night kind of felt like
- 2:12a November game, Trent that really did this thing was an
- 2:15ugly basketball game. I mean, I just talk about
- 2:18overmatched. What's has gone wrong with these
- 2:20Buffs. They just you know what, I
- 2:23should have looked at this. Who did who have they beaten and
- 2:25how bad must those outfits be? Is Iowa State just they they did
- 2:29whatever they wanted last night. They embarrassed the Big 12 team
- 2:3330 to 4 at one point finished. They beat them by 30 as I think
- 2:39well, that's most of his starters in there.
- 2:40And meanwhile, Iowa State's got guys I don't even know on the
- 2:43team making hoops. Anthony rise.
- 2:47Did you see his shot at the end of the game?
- 2:49That little dipsy do underhand boob off the glass and.
- 2:52In I had checked out. Don't blame you.
- 2:54Hey, what was I doing? Really?
- 2:56What was I doing at that point anyways?
- 2:58I was there and I saw Anthony Rice's maybe his only basket in
- 3:01his tenure and I was state, but it was certainly a memorable one
- 3:04for him. I'm guessing his family etcetera
- 3:06as well. But the game itself, good God,
- 3:08just awful, just awful as the the usual cast of characters,
- 3:14the ones you expected what they did, But it was a two guys not
- 3:17named Anthony Rice coming off the bench that really I thought,
- 3:21I mean, I thought played at his best game, Cyclone.
- 3:23No doubt, right? Absolutely.
- 3:24That that's and you've liked him from the jump, yes.
- 3:28I'm just been waiting for more. He's a 21 year old freshman.
- 3:30You can see the skill set. He definitely has the size.
- 3:33There's a lot there and it's a big transition.
- 3:36Not everybody can be Torre, right?
- 3:38Not everybody can just hit the ground running and be at an
- 3:41elite level. But I know there's there and it
- 3:44compounds with what we've talked about a ton too with this squad
- 3:47is how many times have we seen Iowa State have great regular
- 3:50seasons, great Kansas City tournaments, do those kind of
- 3:53things, but for whatever reason, they just look tired.
- 3:57The depth of this team and using the depth, not just having
- 4:00depth, but using depth. TJ has leaned on him more than
- 4:05in the past. And I get the the thought
- 4:07process is that, well, you know what, you just want to play your
- 4:10top guys. You look at all the different
- 4:12ways that you do it. Your top guys are going to get
- 4:14you there, but you got to get there and you got to get their
- 4:16health and you got to get there with fresh legs.
- 4:18Now you can't anticipate A tweaked ankle.
- 4:20You can't anticipate, you know, those kind of injuries that are
- 4:23going to happen. But keep the tread on those
- 4:26tires because we've seen last year against old Miss, this
- 4:29looked dead. They were non competitive in
- 4:32that game against old Miss in the round of 32.
- 4:34Go back to the Illinois game, a game that felt like you should
- 4:36have been a toss up in Illinois, just better in the tournament
- 4:39that Sweet 16 game a couple years back.
- 4:41I think because of what they have off the bench, there's an
- 4:45opportunity that we're going to see a fresh team in Lipsy that
- 4:48we're going to see Jefferson and these guys hopefully at that
- 4:50time, peeking at the right time. And I was talking to a softball
- 4:55practice last night. One of the dads, he's a big
- 4:57cyclone fan. And I said, we know every
- 5:00freshman kind of hits a wall in this kind of time.
- 5:02How about Tory just hits his wall now And we were watching on
- 5:05the phone and right as he does it he he gets a steal to run out
- 5:07and lay up and well, that. Happened to this game last
- 5:10night. But it's probably gonna happen
- 5:12at some point. You'd anticipate you'd rather
- 5:14have a beat now than early March, right?
- 5:17Yeah, for sure, if it's going to happen especially.
- 5:19The way the schedules sets up, I mean a lot of winnable
- 5:22basketball games like Munchilovich only had to play 22
- 5:25minutes. I only had a little foul trouble
- 5:26in the game, but Jefferson, you know, low 30s Buchanan just over
- 5:3020 tour, as you mentioned, 18 Lipsy 32.
- 5:34It was good that they were able to get these guys in the game
- 5:36last night. Bateman was terrific 4 of 6 from
- 5:39three. I mean sign for that any day of
- 5:41the week, right? Heisey was good again.
- 5:45So just a an overwhelming win against a Big 12 school.
- 5:50I want to see if they've beaten. This has drive me.
- 5:53Oh, they've lost six in a row. I know that.
- 5:55Their wins in conference are, well, two you'd expect, Arizona
- 6:00State and Utah. And I'm guessing when K State
- 6:02shows up on the schedule they'll have a tight game against them,
- 6:05too. But my good God does I wish they
- 6:07get Colorado. They go back out there, they do.
- 6:11Not. They do not.
- 6:13That's too bad. But you know what, at the same
- 6:16time, I'm kind of waiting for the waters to get a little
- 6:18deeper. I'm going to see this team
- 6:19tested against the upper echelon teams in the conference and I,
- 6:22and that includes Kansas because of the Kansas is not going to
- 6:25March in here on Valentine's Day and do what happened when they
- 6:29were at home at fog to Iowa State.
- 6:31This can be a hell of a basketball game.
- 6:33Iowa State figured it out. Had that little wool play poorly
- 6:37against Kansas. And Cincinnati was the Iowa
- 6:40group. I mean, good teams go into fog
- 6:41alley, get beat. Sure, right.
- 6:43But that we didn't think that Iowa State team would get beat.
- 6:46That's the way. They did.
- 6:47Yeah, it wasn't just a loss. It was the fashion you coupled
- 6:49with that. Maybe that's the downturn.
- 6:51Maybe that was the the speed bump of this year for Iowa
- 6:54State. They're going to be, it's not
- 6:55that they're going to run the table or anything like that, but
- 6:58that this is going to be the squad now kind of smooth that
- 7:01out and they're going to be good.
- 7:02But you mentioned it. We're going to see not just Iowa
- 7:04State, this is everybody now. I mean, it's it's time for
- 7:07everybody to put on their big boy pants and we are going to
- 7:10see the upper tier of this conference finally for each.
- 7:13Other do you think basketball schedules around the NFL,
- 7:20meaning January's got a couple of good games, but there's a lot
- 7:23of Colorado, Ohio State's and that once we get football, I
- 7:27want to say out of the way, believe that, No.
- 7:29Yeah, right. You know what I mean?
- 7:30But from their perspective, that's what it is.
- 7:33When it's over, all of a sudden the Big 10 ratchets, I'm
- 7:36guessing the AC. Well, we N Duke and North
- 7:38Carolina don't play until February.
- 7:40Right. And they have a double dip.
- 7:43So I, I'm wondering if they, if, if all conferences, you know,
- 7:48take that, keep that in mind when they're making their
- 7:49schedule. And if not, maybe they should.
- 7:51Backload the schedule a little bit.
- 7:53Yeah, I think it makes sense because for the Big 12
- 7:56perspective, I mean, you can see it outside of the Houston Texas
- 7:59Tech game, see these teams face off everybody that.
- 8:01BYU, Arizona, But yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:04And BYU was kind of out of nowhere, if you will, and get
- 8:06the Banster coming in and, and we didn't know how that was
- 8:09going to work out. But of the teams that we felt
- 8:11very confident we're going to be in the upper crust.
- 8:14They just haven't faced off very often.
- 8:15And that's going to change in February.
- 8:17Same thing in the Big 10. I mean, you look at the round
- 8:19Robin that's still there. Now Nebraska's upset the apple
- 8:22cart, obviously, with what they did.
- 8:23And and that was one that we'll put that Michigan Nebraska game
- 8:27there a little earlier because that that one's not going to
- 8:29matter. But when you look at starting
- 8:31tonight with Michigan, Michigan State and the way that that's
- 8:33going to go going forward, it makes sense though from the
- 8:36conferences. We know it's football.
- 8:38That's all that matters. And that's certainly the
- 8:40direction of that it goes. Speaking of big games coming up
- 8:44and as we come on the heels of a week ago in the passing of Chris
- 8:48St. in the anniversary, of course his final game was a non
- 8:53conference game, a weird January non conference game, though they
- 8:56were more prevalent back then. We have a big one coming up here
- 8:58in a couple weeks, a non conference tilt not involving
- 9:01Gonzaga. Remember when Gonzaga Memphis
- 9:03played a couple of years because their conferences were not
- 9:05getting them ready for the NCAA Tournament?
- 9:07I have no idea where you're going, who's going to play.
- 9:09Well, for a team that we thought November was the best team in
- 9:11college basketball, maybe college basketball history.
- 9:13Michigan. Michigan.
- 9:14Who are they? Playing They will be taking on
- 9:17the Dookies in DC. So how does that come about?
- 9:21Is I? I don't know if there is some
- 9:23kind of connection with Dusty May and John Shire I It's odd
- 9:27though. But are they the only Big 10
- 9:28team that has a non conference game of that magnitudes right
- 9:31smack in the middle of, you know, nut cutting time in
- 9:34conference play? As far as I know, you also
- 9:36wonder if they were looking. They get their slate from the
- 9:39the conferences, they say, you know what, we're actually both
- 9:42off that weekend. I don't know if it was something
- 9:44like that instead of and where's the game?
- 9:46Being played. In DC.
- 9:47In DC, yeah. I have no idea the reasoning
- 9:50behind it. I, in fact, I should have
- 9:52Googled it beforehand, but that'll be fun.
- 9:54That'll be coming up on Saturday, February 21st as well,
- 9:58and we'll get that. Nice, that is a good game.
- 10:00That's right in the throws a couple of weeks before the
- 10:02finale of the North Carolina Duke with their double dip.
- 10:06Well, good stuff, basketball tonight.
- 10:07You mentioned a Michigan, Michigan State that I think it's
- 10:10going to be. That's where I'll be watching.
- 10:12I can't wait to watch this game here tonight.
- 10:14See how Michigan is. Michigan State, obviously with
- 10:17Tom Izzo and, you know, the whistle's going to go their way.
- 10:19At least you would assume that that's the case.
- 10:22So I did not watch the Iowa women last night.
- 10:25I followed Chad Leistekow on Twitter and became very apparent
- 10:28very quickly that this does not seem to be going Iowa's way.
- 10:33So what is it? Is it McCabe?
- 10:35That's a part of it, I think, and.
- 10:37Just learning to play without her.
- 10:39You know, I thought GM Jensen brought up something very
- 10:42pertinent and. By the way, it was a Peacock.
- 10:44Is that? Where it was, Yeah.
- 10:46And she talked about that. We talked about Taylor McCabe.
- 10:50Great shooter, right? It's diversified her game a
- 10:53little bit, but that's what it is.
- 10:54But it's not just the offensive skill set.
- 10:56She goes off the bounce a little bit, but that's what she is.
- 10:59She doesn't turn it over, she said.
- 11:02She double teams when she's supposed to double team.
- 11:04She makes the right pass when you're supposed to hedge on the
- 11:06screen, when you're supposed to switch on the screen.
- 11:08She does the right thing every single time, yes.
- 11:11And then you lose that and you you just lose that leadership
- 11:16and. And that experience?
- 11:18Absolutely. It takes a while to figure those
- 11:21little things out. Not the easy things to see that
- 11:23she's a great shooter. It's the little things that are
- 11:26under and I thought that was something very pertinent.
- 11:28The other thing about USCI mean I I know people looked at their
- 11:30record and they lost. Well, of the two games, this was
- 11:33the easy one. What?
- 11:34Right. Allegedly.
- 11:35This is still a top five defense in college basketball.
- 11:38And the boy spread reflected that, right?
- 11:40Right. Iowa wasn't a big favorite.
- 11:41No, they weren't. They were an underdog.
- 11:42They were a dog regardless of of Cindy Bronson, who is just
- 11:46awful. She is an awful.
- 11:47She was formerly the ESPN anchor.
- 11:49She married an ESPN anchor. They you know what they did?
- 11:52They quit ESPN and they became the first television voices
- 11:59Arizona Diamondbacks. Anyway, I'm not sure if they
- 12:02were the first, but they I think they might still do.
- 12:04Or he still does calls Diamondbacks for TV anyways.
- 12:07But Cindy Bruns is bad. She's awful.
- 12:09Yeah, I've heard her. I've heard her do games before.
- 12:11Not good. I don't even remember what
- 12:14direction I was going with that. But the defense for USC was
- 12:17excellent. They are athletic, they have
- 12:21some length to them, something that at times can give.
- 12:23I was some trouble. It was just you can see right
- 12:24away it was one of those games. One thing Jensen also mentioned
- 12:28after the game is the environment.
- 12:30Aren't many people in the building and they're they're not
- 12:32used to that now. It's an excuse.
- 12:35But I, you know what, I always used it when, when teams used to
- 12:38win Big 12 teams used to go to Colorado, right to Colorado
- 12:42leaving, you know, the Coors events there and have 3000
- 12:45people. You know the game before you're
- 12:47at a Hilton Coliseum just going bananas, and then you walk into
- 12:51that morgue. And it was a Borg at USC last
- 12:54night. Was there just many people that
- 12:56will change on Sunday against UCLA as they anticipate a packed
- 13:00out building for that one. But it was 1.
- 13:02You just got to flush it. You played awful, played really
- 13:05poorly in basically every kind of aspect that you can look.
- 13:08At Did Jen Jensen mention she saw it coming or anything like
- 13:11that? No, I think it was more just
- 13:15figuring things out. Figuring things out.
- 13:17And that was kind of the direction of it.
- 13:18But broadcast was not fun to listen to.
- 13:21The game was not fun to watch on top of it.
- 13:24And look, we get to talk about sports.
- 13:26I mentioned something like the Iowa State game last night.
- 13:29That is my least favorite thing in this job for also living the
- 13:33life that I do. You are an empty nester.
- 13:35Things are different for you. You just sit in the couch and
- 13:37you're good to go. Sit in the recliner, you're
- 13:39good. I got softball practice come
- 13:41back. We got to shower, we got things
- 13:42to do. Get the kids to bed.
- 13:43All right, everybody's sleeping now.
- 13:44I go down and I got to watch the Iowa State game where the last
- 13:47thing I saw they were up 30. I know how it was going to play
- 13:51out, so I'm watching and Fast forward and just it's hard to
- 13:56get a lot. I hope you didn't erase it so we
- 13:58can go back and watch it rise. You.
- 14:00You want me to go back and watch that?
- 14:02Part of it as hell play by the kid.
- 14:04Anthony Rice. Anthony Rice.
- 14:06Tell me about Anthony Rice. I got to click on his name.
- 14:08Where is he from? He's from Mill, another
- 14:10Wisconsin kid. Yes.
- 14:12DJ once again mining the state of Wisconsin.
- 14:16I I'm not, I don't want to sound like I'm picking on the kid.
- 14:19I'm not. It was a hell of a play.
- 14:21Not sure he's got another one in him.
- 14:22That might be the highlight of his Iowa State career, Who
- 14:25knows. But last night, for one moment,
- 14:27he certainly had it. All right.
- 14:28Switching gears to the NFL and to one of our regional teams,
- 14:32Kwesi Adolfa Mensa fired the general manager of the Vikings
- 14:36has been let go. I'm not shocked because he's not
- 14:41very good at drafting and he's willing to trade, make trades
- 14:46within his own division when it comes to the draft, which is,
- 14:49you know, you don't see that very often.
- 14:52But I think it's I think probably timing wise, it was
- 14:57probably the right time to do it because if indeed, you know, his
- 15:01his body of work when it comes to the draft, I don't think it's
- 15:04been, you know, stellar by by any means.
- 15:07And before the, you know, he gets close to movement going to
- 15:10Indianapolis for the combine to start doing these things that
- 15:13lead up to the April draft. I think it's probably it'll be
- 15:16good that they did it now. RIP the Band-Aid off.
- 15:19Yeah, may as well. Now, we know that there's GM's
- 15:23out there being interviewed. The Bears assistant GM just got
- 15:26the Falcons job, right? Yeah, yeah, he's gonna be down
- 15:28there. Is that a loss?
- 15:29I mean, yeah. Did you know anything about him?
- 15:31One thing that I thought was the biggest take away is so many
- 15:34people just saying how awesome of a guy he was.
- 15:37Like he was very, very well respected in that realm.
- 15:40And I think, yeah, it's going to be looked at as a loss from the
- 15:42Bears perspective. But these things are already
- 15:44happening now. Maybe some of the groundwork's
- 15:46already done, I guess, for the Vikings, is the way you can put
- 15:48it. Well, these are the names that
- 15:49are out there. All right, We'll just kind of go
- 15:50down that list and go that direction.
- 15:52Still, the Vikings, out of that group of teams that were looking
- 15:56for GM's, they'd be towards the top right, A solid organization.
- 16:00Yeah. Coaching staff is set.
- 16:02Don't have to worry about those kind of things.
- 16:04Except there's just one glaring omission.
- 16:07Well, it's a crappy. Quarterback, it's a crappy
- 16:09quarterback, happy quarterback who I was all in on and.
- 16:12I know you weren't. You know, we, we've gone back
- 16:14and forth on that one a plenty. I feel pretty good about my
- 16:18perspective on that one. No, you're right.
- 16:19Don't feel very good about Sam Darnold.
- 16:21Never win in the Super Bowl, but.
- 16:22Well, I hope you're wrong there that he does win one because I
- 16:25do not want the Patriots to win this thing for.
- 16:28The Vikings now going forward, Flores doesn't get a job again.
- 16:32You're set. How much perspective on this
- 16:36because what was the Shafter report?
- 16:37What was the term that he used that it was it was ugly.
- 16:40That was that was what I I heard him.
- 16:41Say when it when it comes to. Flores Yeah.
- 16:43No, no, no, when it comes to Kwesi Kwesi and things had
- 16:47gotten ugly in Minnesota. Was the phrasing really.
- 16:50Yeah. Is that KOC?
- 16:53Is that a? Power strongly it means.
- 16:55Is that what you think Shafty was alluding?
- 16:57To that, that's what I was trying to read into it, just
- 16:59trying to decipher reading between the lines, if that's
- 17:02what it was. And if that's the case, is KOC
- 17:05close enough to the top level, the ownership level of the
- 17:08organization that he's going to have some sway and who this is?
- 17:12And do you do that for a guy? And KOC has done a really nice
- 17:15job, has never won a playoff game.
- 17:17No, no. And. 14 and 3 two years ago
- 17:23somehow. I mean, that's one of the
- 17:26there's just absolute bananas things about this year.
- 17:29How did this team finish nine and eight?
- 17:30Right. They were dead for so long.
- 17:32Completely clobbered. And what was their total before
- 17:35the year 8 1/2? I think so.
- 17:37And how if you had an over and that you thought your ticket was
- 17:39dead, Absolutely dead. And I talked a lot of Vikings
- 17:43fans that bet it before the season, they thought it was free
- 17:45money and then they thought they were dead in November and it
- 17:47came back and they eventually got it.
- 17:49The other thing with KOC, though, that we've seen is the
- 17:52inconsistency. You're #1A huge surprise out of
- 17:55nowhere. Make the playoffs next year,
- 17:58step back. 7:00 and 10:00. Last year, 14 and three, and
- 18:01then this season 9 and eight. It's that zigzag kind of thing
- 18:04that's been happening. It seems historically to happen
- 18:06with the Vikings, maybe more. Have more than any other NFL
- 18:08franchise that I can think of, is just that up and down nature.
- 18:12Never awful, rarely awful, I should say, but up and down.
- 18:16And when there's expectations for the Vikings, that's usually
- 18:19when they take a step. Yeah, true.
- 18:20When they're a little bit more under the radar, that's when
- 18:22they step forward. It's a good job, though.
- 18:24It's a good job. I think for AGM.
- 18:26They've also spent a lot of money and the financial
- 18:28flexibility is not there at the same level.
- 18:30Some other teams though. Quarterback, I mean, you can't
- 18:33start the season with Brosburn, McCarthy, you just can't, right?
- 18:36You got to find somebody there. How much more is Aaron Jones got
- 18:39left? I think Hawkinson might have be
- 18:41might be on his way out from what I read.
- 18:45Kind of thing and save money. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:48Might be a cap hit there. Obviously the hit man, has he
- 18:50made it official that he's that he's retiring Harrison Smith.
- 18:54What a nice year. I think it was just, I think
- 18:57everybody did. It's just kind of seemed.
- 18:59I mean, they had the walk off for him in the final game too.
- 19:01So yeah, I think it's over. It would take a lot probably to
- 19:05bring him back. You know what?
- 19:06Let's let's grab Dame Mazatani on Monday for those Viking fans
- 19:10in the audience. Give.
- 19:11Yeah, it's too, it's it's too short notice.
- 19:13I'm sure he's over there now at Vikings.
- 19:16What do they call it? The whatever their practice
- 19:19facility. It's named after a health
- 19:21company. It is, yeah.
- 19:23Anyways, Vikings, by the way, when you're looking at cap space
- 19:26for this season, how? Much.
- 19:28Well, they're $39 million over the cap, according to Do you
- 19:31have the whole list? I do.
- 19:32They're 30th. Isn't who's 32nd?
- 19:35Would I be happy? You will.
- 19:37That's what I thought. The Kansas City Chiefs and
- 19:40salary cap, they're like 60 million, right?
- 19:4356.7 here according to sport trash Huge.
- 19:47How many more times can Mahomes, you know, reconfigure that
- 19:51contract? Oh baby.
- 19:53Your team's with the most cap space.
- 19:56It's crazy, Trent of they're both, oh, almost.
- 20:01That was close. That was close.
- 20:02You got halfway through it. Both crappy teams, Tennessee and
- 20:09the Raiders. #3 on that list. #3 on that list, not the Patriots.
- 20:14No the Chargers, really. So get your Chargers tickets
- 20:21now. Well, you already have.
- 20:22I already have, yeah, it's. True 5th on that list.
- 20:25Tina's going to win the Super Bowl.
- 20:26The Seattle Seahawks. This year's Super Bowl, yes.
- 20:29Yeah, Next year's Super Bowl is going to be the Bengals or the
- 20:32Chargers. Well, both those teams have
- 20:33money to spend. And where's Denver?
- 20:35But in the middle, right? Denver's 13th.
- 20:37Now that their highest paid player the last two years is no
- 20:41longer counting against them, that would be 1 Russell Wilson.
- 20:45And then you can let that one die.
- 20:46You never will. You never will.
- 20:48The other teams from the NFC North, Packers are 21st, They
- 20:52are over the cap. All these teams over the cap,
- 20:54Lions over the cap, they're 23rd and the Bears 26 in terms of.
- 20:58Caps So the Bears have how much? They are over by about 10.
- 21:02About 10, yes. So restructuring all over the
- 21:05place. Well, maybe somebody with one of

- 21:25and Condon under way in a Friday.
- 21:27It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:42Hi, coming up on 1230. Miller and Condon, welcome back,
- 21:45Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent and I with you until just
- 21:49before two, 2:00 off the bench. Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain, 2
- 21:54until 5 still to come this hour 4 of you will get a chance to
- 21:56win some grub from one of the three chicken coop locations
- 22:01here in central Iowa. Let's talk Hawks.
- 22:03Tom Caker joins us every single Friday.
- 22:05Well, every week, mostly on Fridays and this one being no
- 22:08different. Hello, Tom Trenton, Ken, thanks
- 22:10for coming on. How are you?
- 22:12Doing well, hope you guys are doing OK.
- 22:14Absolutely. Hey, before we get into
- 22:16basketball, both men's and women's, I've been following the
- 22:20the senior bowls. That what it is this week.
- 22:23Yeah. And and Jennings dunk are
- 22:25stealing the show both on the field and off the field.
- 22:29Obviously, you had a ton of interactions with him during his
- 22:32during his time at Iowa. He's a character.
- 22:35I think that's coming up first and foremost.
- 22:37And boy, there's an awful lot of fan bases that are getting their
- 22:41first, you know, taste of Jennings dunker and what he
- 22:43means, what he can do both as a player, but more so just as a
- 22:47person. He's he's, he's different in a
- 22:50good way. Who doesn't want a six foot
- 22:53seven 320 LB ginger? That's that's hilarious.
- 22:57I mean, but just, you know, he changes his diet like every
- 23:02couple months. He goes from like not eating
- 23:04carbs to like loading up on carbs all the time, drinking
- 23:08coffee, like it's going out of style.
- 23:10And you know, the thing that people don't realize about him,
- 23:15he's brilliant. He's like, he's like an academic
- 23:18all American. It was very quick in his
- 23:21response with media, so that maybe doesn't surprise me, yeah.
- 23:24He's real. He's really well read.
- 23:26I've talked to him about books he's read and but he's just
- 23:29super well read and very interesting guy.
- 23:32So yeah, just that he's going to be a guy that whoever drafts him
- 23:37is going to going to have a lot of fun, the media in particular.
- 23:41You look at that offensive line class, Logan Jones, he's going
- 23:44to test through the roof. We know about his athleticism,
- 23:47his power, what he's going to do.
- 23:49You look at some of the other prospects that are going to be
- 23:51there. Who else do you like outside of
- 23:53that group? And certainly the Mark Gronowski
- 23:55conversation, like it changed after his performance last week
- 23:58in the Shrine Bowl. Yeah, I think he really helped
- 24:02himself, didn't we? Didn't help himself.
- 24:05Yes, absolutely. He's going to be somebody that
- 24:08you know, a year from now, you know how many guys, I mean, this
- 24:12kickoffs are kind of in vogue now.
- 24:15You kind of want to return guy. And and so maybe he I just got
- 24:20to think he's going to find his way onto a roster, especially
- 24:22the way he showed he catch the football because that was kind
- 24:25of the big knock on him, the high with it.
- 24:27He just kind of caught the ball with his body a little bit too
- 24:30much much and and and wasn't a great receiver, a great route
- 24:34runner. But like he answered some of
- 24:36those questions. I'm really curious where Wampa
- 24:40goes. That's what the guy I'm really
- 24:43interested in because I think we all all would agree physically
- 24:49he's there. You know, he's got everything
- 24:52that you look for. He's big, he's strong, he's
- 24:53fast, he's, you know, it hits hard, but it just he never like
- 24:59turned into the all American that I think we all thought he
- 25:01would be. But I think I think he gets in
- 25:04the right place. Maybe he could be a a really
- 25:07nice safety. Absolutely.
- 25:09Basketball, TC, let's do it. Let's start with the women.
- 25:12They were, you know, they played last night.
- 25:15Didn't go well. What do you make of that, Tom?
- 25:17What? What do you what do you make of
- 25:18the fact that you know they just laid an egg?
- 25:21Learning to play without McCabe, Where are you at?
- 25:24Yeah, I think it's life on the road.
- 25:28You know, I think that was more than anything else.
- 25:30And they just USC knew they had to get that game.
- 25:33They needed a big signature kind of win.
- 25:36And boy, they just came out and they had not shot the ball like
- 25:40that all year. And they just came out and just
- 25:43drilled it. And I thought when Iowa got it
- 25:46to three, OK, I was in the third quarter, they got into 3 and I
- 25:51thought, boy, if they can just get a stop and come down and get
- 25:56another shot, maybe tie it or go down one, I think they can get
- 25:59them. And then USC just went on like
- 26:02an 11 O run or something. And it was like, OK, this one's
- 26:06over. And they just put the foot on
- 26:07the gas. They just, they just played
- 26:09better. I would, I would just foul too
- 26:11much. You know, Hannah picked up the
- 26:13two fouls early and that's just, I thought that really derailed
- 26:16them. So just just a tough night for
- 26:20Iowa overall. And it's even tougher with
- 26:23what's looming on Sunday now. One of the upper crust of
- 26:25college basketball and you felt they go out there, you get a
- 26:28split. Well, the only way to get a
- 26:29split now is to beat #2 team in the country in UCLA with the
- 26:32bets and and the rest of that crew.
- 26:34It's not just her. It is an incredibly deep and
- 26:36talented team. The McCabe factor, I know Jan
- 26:39talked about it, we mentioned it earlier in the program today,
- 26:42talked about losing McCabe. It wasn't just their shooting
- 26:45ability. It's the little things that she
- 26:47does. That veteran presence there is
- 26:49maybe going to take a little bit longer than we anticipated and
- 26:51certainly after what we saw after she got injured against
- 26:54Ohio State. Yeah, it's sort of like, you
- 26:57know, when the if the Caitlin team had lost like a Gabby
- 27:00Marshall or just the kind of a glute player that that that
- 27:05really did a lot of things. So yeah, I, I think, I, I think
- 27:11it's maybe a little bigger of a loss than maybe we think.
- 27:15So definitely think. Addie deal to the starting line
- 27:18up what obviously didn't have very good game last night
- 27:21statistically anyway. What do you what do we make of
- 27:24that, Tom? Yeah, she, you know, maybe it's
- 27:28just getting back home, a little pressure on herself and just
- 27:32adjusting to a new role. It might take her a couple games
- 27:36to get comfortable being a starter.
- 27:39Yeah, it's just it's just Mike and and it doesn't look like,
- 27:44you know, I somebody asked me last night.
- 27:47Well, what about Emily Rodriguez?
- 27:48It just doesn't look like Emily's coming back.
- 27:50I don't know. She just, I just I'm not
- 27:52counting on her coming back at this point.
- 27:54Like she's been on the bench, spent, supportive teammate, but
- 27:59I just don't think she's going to play.
- 28:00Is she in California? Do you know?
- 28:02Was she on the bench last night? Yeah, she was there.
- 28:04She was there so I just not not playing.
- 28:09Don't know if she's practicing it at all either.
- 28:12I don't know. Yeah, there was a little shot on
- 28:14Instagram of her to put a shot up.
- 28:15And I know some people on your goofy message boards, they get a
- 28:19little crazy when they see something like that.
- 28:21Yeah, pump the brakes. I I think it doesn't take a
- 28:23whole lot to figure out what's happening here.
- 28:26She's going to red shirt this year, get a medical red shirt.
- 28:28She's going to depart after the season.
- 28:30I I think that is the most realistic scenario.
- 28:33Jan's not going to come out and say anything like that.
- 28:35It's a back injury, very difficult kind of quantify that.
- 28:38And even if there's something there, I think that's what we're
- 28:40eventually going to see. One more on the women's side of
- 28:43things and mention the UCLA game.
- 28:45Even after that though, Minnesota Bart Torvacasm is a
- 28:49one point favorite, Washington 4 point favorite, one point
- 28:51favorite at Nebraska. These are all games that are
- 28:55toss up games and and suddenly could go from this team that was
- 28:589 and O in the Big 10. Couple of tough losses if they
- 29:01lose 2 out in LA. We might be having a different
- 29:03conversation about this team. Is there a concern for you with
- 29:07this squad right now that maybe they're a little bit closer to
- 29:10not a team that's going to contend for a regular season
- 29:12title, but they're just part of that group in that next year?
- 29:17Yeah, I think the goal for this team should be that they want to
- 29:21get one of those top 4 seeds in the in one of the regionals so
- 29:24they can get home games in Iowa City.
- 29:27I think that's probably the that was the goal coming into the
- 29:31season. I think that's probably the goal
- 29:33right now too. I think do that.
- 29:35That's good. Without a doubt, that's a
- 29:38successful year, no doubt. Let's Tom, we've seen guys go
- 29:41off, you know, bugs. Trent, that's Trent's guy keeps
- 29:43bringing them up. He's right.
- 29:44It's the Minnesota game. Has anybody done what Cam Woods
- 29:49did at Carver in an Iowa game? Can you recall something?
- 29:53I mean, haven't that type of game totally out of the blue
- 29:57like he did? Yeah, I was.
- 29:59No, I always go back to LA Fester Rhodes, you know, with
- 30:03that one. But this was a guy that just
- 30:06went nuclear in like a 5 minute span.
- 30:09It's unbelievable he couldn't miss, could not miss and.
- 30:13That's the guy they picked up mid year.
- 30:16It's crazy, you know? And it was Alvaro's teammate at
- 30:21Robert Morris. While Speaking of him, Fulgaris
- 30:25had a really good game, I thought one of his better games.
- 30:28I think so too, yeah. He really contributed more
- 30:31offensively, got on the glass, you know, and they needed him.
- 30:35They needed him to get better and play better.
- 30:38So I'm they've got to have him do well if they're going to, you
- 30:43know, make a run in March. They do, they need that
- 30:45secondary scoring and they're getting it out of Tavion Banks.
- 30:48Certainly more consistent as he's on the precipice and maybe
- 30:51breaking Chris Street's record and tied with Jordan Bohannon.
- 30:54That's in front. Didn't have an opportunity,
- 30:57unfortunately. I wanted to join the Zoom with a
- 30:58McCollum today. What did he have to say about
- 31:01their West Coast road trip and and are they staying out there?
- 31:04Just staying in the Pacific Northwest, not coming home.
- 31:07Yeah, they're staying out. So they're leaving today this
- 31:10afternoon and they'll get some practice in tomorrow and then
- 31:18and then they'll they'll play on Sunday and then head up to
- 31:22Seattle. They'll also get to see Ethan
- 31:25Harris the the, the forward. So I think they're trying, maybe
- 31:30going to try and get to see him tonight out West.
- 31:33So I know Ben mentioned he's playing twice, so we'll see what
- 31:38happens. But yeah, they're going to stay
- 31:40out there and just no sense in flying all the way back and then
- 31:45turn around going back again. I'm with you.
- 31:47So let's talk about the free throw record.
- 31:49If if we get to that point, you know, banks can make it easy on
- 31:54everybody. Just miss, you know, but not but
- 31:57not on purpose. Just have one clank.
- 31:59What what's he going to do? How should he handle these not
- 32:01from Iowa. I think that's a a huge
- 32:04difference. I mean, Bohannon with all that
- 32:05Iowa ties throughout the family. You could see that one.
- 32:09I'm not so sure if it if it if it banks does get on the cusp.
- 32:13How does he handle it, Tom? Boy, he's going to be on the
- 32:18road probably when he when he has a chance to break it.
- 32:22And so there'll be no like Carver Hawkeye arena pressure.
- 32:29I just think you got to go out and just make dots.
- 32:31I agree the point. I agree.
- 32:34Yeah, I never thought of that. We talked about it yesterday,
- 32:36Tom and I maybe you did try and I missed it.
- 32:39The fact that they're on the road because he is going to, you
- 32:42know, with these shot 8 free throws the other night, we're
- 32:45that close, you'd be on the road.
- 32:46That's that makes a difference I think.
- 32:49Yeah, yeah, I think it does. And it's just there's not that
- 32:52that pressure, not that he would feel the pressure, because I
- 32:54don't even know that he would know much about Chris St.
- 32:59Yeah, absolutely. I mean, he didn't know Tavian
- 33:01Banks when he got here, nor should he.
- 33:03I mean, we're talking about guys that were not around when these
- 33:05guys were around. Speaking of Tavian Banks, he
- 33:09played last year, Drake. He was a JUCO guy.
- 33:11There's been a lot of speculation about the
- 33:13possibility as a JUCO guy, maybe he could have some more
- 33:16eligibility. What can you tell us on that
- 33:18front? I asked McCollum about it before
- 33:22the year and he said he's done after this year.
- 33:24They they've they've been told that he was done after this year
- 33:26in Tavion. He can said that to me.
- 33:28So unless something changes, I'm just going to assume that he's
- 33:31done after this year. But one would think if if you
- 33:36know, they they figured out I was talking to somebody close to
- 33:40the team before the game when Chad Baker Mazzaro was at
- 33:46Mazzaro was at Duquesne as a freshman.
- 33:49Kate Sage was 12 years old. So that's.
- 33:53Absolutely wild. So what grade are you in when
- 33:56you're 12? Like 6th.
- 33:57Now you're playing against him in a Big 10 game between the
- 34:02University of Iowa and Southern Cal.
- 34:04It's a Big 10 Conference game. Yeah, things have changed just a
- 34:07little bit. Tom, one more on the basketball
- 34:10front. I want to get your perspective.
- 34:11And you know, we've heard we saw a little bit of run out of
- 34:14Brandon Hassan and we heard McCollum say, well, he's been
- 34:18practicing. Well, same, same thing about
- 34:19driving your rock, trying to find him a way to get in there.
- 34:23Do you want to see them dig a little bit more into that bench?
- 34:26Do you want to see them, even if it is for a spot, you know, 4
- 34:29minute stretch, things like that, trying to keep these guys
- 34:32fresh. They're going on the West Coast.
- 34:33Is that something you anticipate we are going to see or that we
- 34:36should see with this squad? I don't know that they will
- 34:39unless they have to. I really don't.
- 34:41I just don't. I don't think they're going to
- 34:43play a lot of guys. I think he's going to play score
- 34:47like 8 guys, maybe 9. You know, all those guys have
- 34:52been practicing well. He mentioned today on the on the
- 34:54zoom that Terry Thompson's been practicing, but you know, he's
- 34:57not going to burn his red shirt. But he always comes back to the
- 35:00defensive end whenever he says playing really well.
- 35:03He understands the offense. And then it's like defense, not
- 35:06so much, you know, it's just. I love it how it.
- 35:09Is just how it is. You know it's you read between
- 35:12the lines, so. Tom Kaikert hawkeyereport.com
- 35:15I'm surprised you're not on the West Coast, Tom, as much as you
- 35:18travel. Well, I, I had medical gotcha
- 35:23appointments, so I, I, I couldn't make it.
- 35:26So otherwise I'd be out there. I think I'm going to.
- 35:28I think I'll be at maybe headed to Maryland.
- 35:31Though. Nice.
- 35:32Well, make it. Make an appointment to be with
- 35:34us next Friday, all right? I absolutely love it.
- 35:37Good to talk to you. Thanks, Tom.
- 35:38Have a good week. See you buddy.

- 39:11No, our first two went completely the opposite
- 39:13direction. And then one of was a Berry No,
- 39:17I was one of us. I thought was one of them took
- 39:19Nebraska, but other three dogs in his list, he had K State, he
- 39:26had Oregon, he had Bradley and then took the Huskers.
- 39:30That was Joe, Yeah, he was with Joe, Yeah.
- 39:32We got three people on the Cyclones, 3 on the Ducks and
- 39:35then split in the other two games.
- 39:37Bradley and Drake, boy, if Drake can get this one.
- 39:40And they got a big chance to do so, I think.
- 39:43And that's on CBS Sports Network at 5:00.
- 39:45I want to sing tomorrow. Is there any buzz for Drake?
- 39:49It feels like there's there's buzz with you in the afternoon,
- 39:52with Sean in the afternoon around town.
- 39:55No, I wonder. I'm not hearing it.
- 39:56Yeah, I wonder. Well, you're I don't get around.
- 39:59That's true. It's been a really nice story.
- 40:03Well, it's getting better. It's been a really good decade
- 40:06run. Yeah, for sure, all that.
- 40:08If you want to include that, yes, absolutely.
- 40:10Because I used to laugh at people like you that bring up
- 40:13Drake. Nobody cares.
- 40:15No, I know for the most part. And I will tell you somebody
- 40:19statewide, nobody cares. The story that the only thing
- 40:24that I can remember from Drake basketball, from, I don't know,
- 40:28Rudy Washington taking over the program until I moved here was
- 40:33when all the guys got suspended that season.
- 40:36Academically, you remember. That, yeah, I do.
- 40:37I absolutely. Remember that 2000, 2001?
- 40:41Maybe yeah, around that time for not hitting the two point, what
- 40:44did they have to make the GPA? Yeah, the two point it was over
- 40:472. Maybe they were NCAA eligible,
- 40:50but they weren't eligible. Yes, yes, yes.
- 40:52And yet they were winning games, yes, and they had won games
- 40:54forever. And it was.
- 40:56Was that the Kanasky era I. Think so?
- 40:59Not positive, but that's the only story I can remember
- 41:02reverberating the time I was a little kid.
- 41:05Yeah, until I moved here. And then, of course, 2008.
- 41:08Yeah, that was unbelievable because I, when I was state,
- 41:10were both down. That that helped a lot too.
- 41:12A lot. It was huge, yes.
- 41:13Because without. That.
- 41:14Oh no. What about a story but not a
- 41:17story? But we, because we followed them
- 41:19everywhere. Everywhere couldn't.
- 41:22We were doing remotes. Advertisers were paying for
- 41:25Drake remotes. Honest to God, I were too.
- 41:28Coming up next to Eugene Repay on Iowa State, Mike Palm on
- 41:30Vegas at Circa, Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 41:34Network.
