- 0:27Hey, everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So let's talk about toxic people and their toxic talk and their
- 0:35toxic text and their toxic interactions with you.
- 0:40So often, so often, so often we get lost in defending ourselves
- 0:46against toxic people and feeling that we have to kind of push
- 0:52against it and make it different.
- 0:56Let them understand. I need you to understand XYZ.
- 1:00And if you're really in a situation where there are toxic
- 1:03people around you, it is very hard to get them to understand
- 1:07that they are toxic. Can we all agree on that?
- 1:09That it's very hard to get toxic people to, you know, realize
- 1:13that they are toxic and they will do just about anything to
- 1:15prove that they are not toxic? They will spin their yarns.
- 1:20They will tell you how wrong you are.
- 1:23They will make you think you're insane for the way you think.
- 1:26They will push, push, push, as one of the favorite terms of the
- 1:30day seems to be gaslighting. They will gaslight you, they
- 1:34will tell you things and they will try to manipulate you, but
- 1:36that's just good old fashioned manipulation, my friends.
- 1:40And that's what they're doing. And they will try anything and
- 1:43everything that they can to make you believe that they're not
- 1:45toxic because that's their job and they still have to go out
- 1:48there and be toxic because they haven't decided to be any
- 1:51different at this point in time. So how does one handle a
- 1:54situation when you are surrounded or involved with a
- 1:58toxic person? You know, often I I have things
- 2:03come up in in sessions and we have to work through stuff with
- 2:06people and talk about toxicity and how that person's just
- 2:11consistently showing up a certain way and you get to
- 2:13decide who you want to be in the process of engagement.
- 2:17So how does one engage with someone that's toxic?
- 2:20Well, really the truth is you don't you, you just can't you
- 2:24there's nothing that you are going to be able to say or do or
- 2:27be that it's going to influence that person one way or another.
- 2:30It's the hardest lesson to learn, but there's nothing that
- 2:33you can do that's going to make them understand your point of
- 2:37view. There is nothing that you're
- 2:39going to be able to put out there that's going to say hey,
- 2:42it. Like if you say your your text
- 2:44messages are so frustrating because you want to gossip about
- 2:48people all the time and it really bothers me, then all of a
- 2:52sudden you're the villain because they are looking for
- 2:55that. If you try to tell someone, hey,
- 2:58this makes me feel a certain way, when you do this, guess
- 3:01what, that doesn't make a hill of beans difference because
- 3:04they're just going to be like, well that's your point of view
- 3:06and they will always spin it around and they will never take
- 3:09ownership of it. That's the crazy part about
- 3:11toxic people. They don't know how or want to
- 3:14take ownership of it because they are deep in the dysfunction
- 3:18that they are projecting. So we have to ask ourselves, am
- 3:22I the crazy one for trying to actually, you know, break that
- 3:26pattern for them? You're not crazy, but you're
- 3:29putting yourself in a position where you have a successful
- 3:32strategy for failure. It is highly unlikely, highly
- 3:36unlikely that that person is going to turn around in that
- 3:40moment, especially when their emotions are up.
- 3:43We know when emotions go up, intelligence goes down.
- 3:45So they are not going to turn around and all of a sudden say,
- 3:48you know what Kim? You're right.
- 3:50I feel like you are correct. I did this and this and this and
- 3:53this. And as soon as they, even if
- 3:57they did acknowledge some of that stuff, all of a sudden
- 3:59there's going to be the yes. But here's why I did it, and I
- 4:02did it because of you or I did it because of this, and they
- 4:05will justify it and they will never just stop and they will
- 4:08never say I will work on it because that's not where they
- 4:11are. Does this mean they're bad
- 4:13people? No.
- 4:14It just means that's where they are.
- 4:16That doesn't mean you have to stay.
- 4:18All that means is this is where they are.
- 4:21So you have decisions to make. You have things that you can
- 4:24actually start to contemplate and work on and say, hey, do I
- 4:28really want that in my life? Do I want that level of
- 4:32conversation connectedness with someone who makes me feel that
- 4:36way? Like if you're with a person and
- 4:37when you're done, you walk away and feel like I need to take a
- 4:40shower. That was so gross and
- 4:43unappealing. That's a sign, my friends.
- 4:46That's a sign. But your job is to break the
- 4:49pattern that you you're engaging with them in.
- 4:52So for instance, if you get a text message from somebody,
- 4:55let's just use the most benign thing we can here with a text
- 4:58message. And let's just say they're
- 5:00gossiping about people, because that seems to be such a huge
- 5:05toxicity. They're gossiping about people.
- 5:07So all of a sudden it's like and they're not trying to be like
- 5:11this is a one off thing or they're, hey, did you happen to
- 5:14see this? I'm talking about it's a
- 5:15consistent pattern. It's something that, you know,
- 5:18shows up repeatedly with this person.
- 5:21If they text you something and you see that toxic stuff and
- 5:25they're like, hey, Oh my gosh, did you see this or oh, here we
- 5:29go again, blah, blah, blah. And they bring up a subject that
- 5:31you were not talking about not engaging in.
- 5:34Don't answer the text. Just because somebody throws out
- 5:37a hook with a worm on it does not mean you have to be the fish
- 5:40that hits it. You can swim right on by.
- 5:43In fact, there's power in swimming on by those hooks, my
- 5:45friends. OK, think about that one.
- 5:50Don't be the fish. All right, I'll see you guys
- 5:53tomorrow. Have a blessed day.
- 5:54Bye.
