- 0:11Speaker 1: Well, hello, guys. Here we are. What a week it's been, Kev.
- 0:14Speaker 1: It's been something. People really... Delete the thread! People have
- 0:20Speaker 1: been talking. Yes, they have. Oh, man. It's our first
- 0:25Speaker 1: kind of major viral moment on the podcast. We've had moments.
- 0:31Speaker 1: But that's something, huh? It's just unfortunate that the New
- 0:34Speaker 1: York Giants have banned us from ever coming to any
- 0:36Speaker 1: more games.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Just kidding. How do you feel being a celebrity now?
- 0:41Speaker 1: It's so different. My life is so different. Guys, it's
- 0:44Speaker 1: Halloween in days. What are you going to be doing
- 0:47Speaker 1: for Halloween?
- 0:48Speaker 2: I am going to be with my kiddos. So I'm
- 0:51Speaker 2: going to be in London, fly back. This is kind
- 0:54Speaker 2: of a crazy travel day, but I'm going to do it.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I'm going to be with my kiddos, and then I'm
- 0:58Speaker 2: going to get on a plane. I'm going to fly
- 1:00Speaker 2: to New York, and then I'm going to take my
- 1:03Speaker 2: godson and goddaughter trick-or-treating.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Fantastic. Fantastic. And then I'm going to get on a
- 1:08Speaker 1: plane the next day, and we're going to fly to Milwaukee? Yes. Milwaukee.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I'm going home to L.A.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Nice.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Trick-or-treating. Big trick-or-treating day. I'm doing a Diwali party. Oh,
- 1:20Speaker 1: that's going to be— dude, the guest list is stacked. Stacked.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Nick's got— Coming with a new girlfriend. And he's got
- 1:28Speaker 1: a big celeb guest list. Wow, a lot of bigs.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Big guest list. I'm going back for that. Bring your
- 1:34Speaker 1: autograph books. And then I'm going to take Malte Marie
- 1:37Speaker 1: trick-or-treating on the 30th because she and Priyanka are flying
- 1:41Speaker 1: to Australia because Priyanka's starting a new movie.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:45Speaker 1: So she's going to fly on the 31st or 1st?
- 1:46Speaker 1: She flies on the 31st. Fun. It's going to be
- 1:51Speaker 1: a spooky flight. I bet she said that, didn't she?
- 1:54Speaker 1: She's doing a movie called blue fly with russell crowe
- 1:59Speaker 1: oh oh this is god it's gonna be sick can't
- 2:01Speaker 1: wait for that she's been studying her script because she
- 2:05Speaker 1: plays a uh an international translator cool so she's got
- 2:12Speaker 1: to speak like seven or eight different languages casual she's
- 2:15Speaker 1: incredible she blows me away that's great um anyway i'm
- 2:19Speaker 1: gonna miss them but i get to see them for
- 2:21Speaker 1: two days before they go and then we Come back
- 2:23Speaker 1: on tour and.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Lovely.
- 2:24Speaker 4: It's great.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Kevin, what about you? Very exciting. You know, big day.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Halloween trick-or-treating. We actually... It's your daughter's birthday! It's daughter's birthday!
- 2:30Speaker 3: That's right.
- 2:31Speaker 5: It was just her birthday. But we're going to go
- 2:33Speaker 5: kart racing, which is great. Then we're going trick-or-treating. But
- 2:36Speaker 5: last night, we got, like, mischief night by our oldest daughter.
- 2:40Speaker 5: She was at a sleepover.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Oh, I saw you doing that. It looked like a
- 2:42Speaker 1: lot of stuff to clean up.
- 2:45Speaker 5: Yeah. It's all biodegradable. So, yes, our house got toilet
- 2:48Speaker 5: papered by our daughter, who lives at the house.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Is she.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Cleaning this up? I did, in fact, say if you're
- 2:54Speaker 1: going to do it, you're going to have to clean
- 2:55Speaker 1: it up. But it was fun.
- 2:56Speaker 5: We had a really good time. We shot off some
- 2:58Speaker 5: confetti cannons and stuff.
- 3:00Speaker 1: That's fun.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Yeah, and then on the 31st, we're doing a virtual
- 3:05Speaker 5: concert with a game on Roblox, which is cool. You've
- 3:08Speaker 5: never been more excited about anything we've ever done.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Can I put it this way? I always get on
- 3:12Speaker 1: one tangent. And this is my one tangent.
- 3:14Speaker 5: And I get really anxious and really nervous that I'm
- 3:17Speaker 5: going to push this thing forward and it becomes a
- 3:18Speaker 5: thing because I'm trying to make sure it goes well.
- 3:21Speaker 5: And it becomes like my thing to own. And I
- 3:24Speaker 5: feel pressure for it to go well. And so I
- 3:26Speaker 5: don't mean for it to be a thing I talk
- 3:27Speaker 5: about a lot. But I've taken ownership of it and
- 3:30Speaker 5: I want it to be good. And sometimes that requires
- 3:32Speaker 5: like making sure.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I think you would like us to also be.
- 3:36Speaker 5: No, I just don't want to make you guys be
- 3:38Speaker 5: annoyed by it. The requests that are coming in, knowing
- 3:40Speaker 5: it came more through me.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Well, I think it's going to be amazing, just for
- 3:44Speaker 1: the record. It's going to be great. Roblox, big fans.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Steal the egg. Steal the egg. Steal an egg. Kevin
- 3:50Speaker 1: should be an executive at your company. I'm just going
- 3:53Speaker 1: to make my own games. We got Halloween. We got
- 3:55Speaker 1: a very special guest on the pod today. One of
- 3:56Speaker 1: our best friends. One of our very best friends. He's
- 3:59Speaker 1: like a brother to us at this point. On the
- 4:00Speaker 1: Halloween episode. Please welcome J.P. Sachs. J.P. Sachs! J.P. Sachs
- 4:05Speaker 1: on the pod! He's our best.
- 4:07Speaker 4: Friend, J.P. Sachs!
- 4:08Speaker 1: Hi, fam! New album.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Piano guy.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Okay, piano guy. Out now.
- 4:13Speaker 4: That was so well edited.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yeah, look at that. He's got the soundboard ready to go.
- 4:18Speaker 1: This is impressive. You're on the Halloween episode.
- 4:20Speaker 2: This is an official Halloween episode because technically Halloween's Saturday.
- 4:25Speaker 4: I can't wait.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Do you have any plans?
- 4:28Speaker 4: Yes, I'm doing some shows in Toronto. We're going to
- 4:30Speaker 4: do a theme. We're all going to dress up as
- 4:31Speaker 4: our favorite characters from songs. I will be Piano Man.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Fantastic. Wearing a piano?
- 4:36Speaker 4: Just the Billy Joel suit.
- 4:38Speaker 1: We went to your album release party last night. I
- 4:40Speaker 1: should say, Joe and I did. Kevin went back to
- 4:42Speaker 1: be with his family, which is the right thing to do.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Lots of fun. Great spot. Is that where you're doing
- 4:50Speaker 1: the shows?
- 4:50Speaker 4: That is where I'm doing the shows. Dina's Tavern here
- 4:52Speaker 4: in Toronto.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Fantastic. It was a good vibe at the release party.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And so thrilled for you. This is a huge moment. You're...
- 5:01Speaker 1: New album is out. Go check it out if you
- 5:02Speaker 1: haven't already. Our history goes back basically a year-ish. A
- 5:07Speaker 1: year and a half.
- 5:08Speaker 4: A year and a bit. A year and a half.
- 5:09Speaker 1: You become like family to us, and we're glad to
- 5:11Speaker 1: have you on the pod. It's long overdue. First time
- 5:12Speaker 1: we ever hung out. We also hung out with your father.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Yeah, he'll be here tonight.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Fantastic. Your dad is so cool. So, life update. You've
- 5:20Speaker 1: moved back to Toronto. Or you got a place here. Yes.
- 5:23Speaker 4: I have some roots. I've not had a home in
- 5:25Speaker 4: Toronto since I was 17 years old, 18 years old,
- 5:28Speaker 4: when I moved to Los Angeles.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Wow.
- 5:29Speaker 4: And every time I'd come back to Toronto, I would
- 5:31Speaker 4: stay in hotel rooms because both of my parents had
- 5:34Speaker 4: places that were too small for me to sleep in.
- 5:36Speaker 4: So this is the first time in my life where
- 5:37Speaker 4: I get to come back to Toronto as an adult
- 5:39Speaker 4: and stay in a spot with my dad. And it's
- 5:40Speaker 4: been very sentimental and beautiful, and I'm very grateful for it.
- 5:43Speaker 1: It's a great city. Well-deserved.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Lots of family moments.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Welcome home.
- 5:45Speaker 4: And I mean, y'all feel like family to me, too,
- 5:47Speaker 4: in so many different ways. Even this album that I
- 5:50Speaker 4: just put out. would not have been made in the
- 5:52Speaker 4: way I made it if it had not been meeting
- 5:54Speaker 4: the three of you and making music with you because
- 5:56Speaker 4: I really tried to emulate the way we made music
- 5:58Speaker 4: at our first camp in New York in the making
- 6:01Speaker 4: of this album.
- 6:01Speaker 1: The September camp. The September camp.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 6:03Speaker 1: What a great camp. Which a lot of music that
- 6:05Speaker 1: we're putting on our new album came out of.
- 6:08Speaker 5: First, for people that are listening or watching a writing camp,
- 6:11Speaker 5: if they don't know, is when we would go to
- 6:14Speaker 5: a special spot and have a studio and multiple writers
- 6:17Speaker 5: all at one time, all writing, working towards a project.
- 6:19Speaker 5: A lot of songs came out of it for your project.
- 6:21Speaker 1: For, yeah, Sunday Best.
- 6:23Speaker 5: Sunday Best, a lot of Jonas Brothers songs, a lot
- 6:25Speaker 5: of Joe Jonas songs, D & C songs.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I love the writing camp style because I feel like
- 6:30Speaker 1: the momentum and the volume at which everyone's creating is
- 6:35Speaker 1: really accelerating. It is efficient. And there's nothing else that
- 6:38Speaker 1: you're supposed to be doing or that you should be doing.
- 6:40Speaker 1: In other words, like, if you're just going for a
- 6:42Speaker 1: sort of 9 to 5 style session, you're like, I
- 6:45Speaker 1: want to go home and go to dinner. When we
- 6:47Speaker 1: were doing that camp, which I thought was super fun,
- 6:50Speaker 1: it just went till 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. every night,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and then it just became a listening session party. It
- 6:55Speaker 1: was so fun. That studio was like magic. We were
- 6:57Speaker 1: talking about it today, because there is.
- 7:00Speaker 2: A song on your album that we wrote together, which
- 7:03Speaker 2: very kindly you asked, hey, can I put this song
- 7:07Speaker 2: on my album?
- 7:08Speaker 1: And obviously, yeah.
- 7:11Speaker 4: It's been an early fan favorite, too. I think I've
- 7:13Speaker 4: gotten the most DMs about Happy For You.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah. That's cool.
- 7:16Speaker 4: The one.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I love that song. I'm so happy.
- 7:18Speaker 2: And we wrote it during that New York writing camp,
- 7:20Speaker 2: but that's about the studio special. It's the Lower East Side,
- 7:23Speaker 2: but there's, we can, we'll show pictures here. Like we
- 7:25Speaker 2: were saying today, studios usually are like windowless and you
- 7:31Speaker 2: can kind of depressing. But that studio had windows everywhere.
- 7:36Speaker 1: So nice. It was gorgeous.
- 7:37Speaker 4: I felt deeply alive and so inspired. And there were
- 7:40Speaker 4: so many songs happening every day and it was just.
- 7:42Speaker 5: The rooftop access, too, which was great to have that
- 7:44Speaker 5: rooftop that we all got to hang in. But I
- 7:46Speaker 5: remember the last night we were all there, it was
- 7:49Speaker 5: kind of magical. Everyone just sat around in the main
- 7:52Speaker 5: Studio A, I guess, and just listened to everything that
- 7:55Speaker 5: was created in that week.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Song, show, and tell. Song, show, and tell.
- 7:58Speaker 5: And it was, it felt like 1970. You know, like
- 8:02Speaker 5: it felt different.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I've been to a few writing camps, and there's a
- 8:05Speaker 1: version of that that has happened at each one of
- 8:08Speaker 1: those camps.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I will say in the past, though, at previous camps,
- 8:11Speaker 1: and I'm not going to name names, there was definitely
- 8:13Speaker 1: a competitive vibe. People would listen to a song and
- 8:15Speaker 1: it's going like, this song's better. Exactly. I didn't feel that.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Got him. I didn't feel that with our camp because
- 8:21Speaker 1: everyone was just so pumped for everyone writing and creating.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I think we were just inspired to be like, oh, okay,
- 8:27Speaker 1: let's go do another one.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Let's go create.
- 8:29Speaker 2: It's like 40-some songs by the time four days were done.
- 8:33Speaker 4: It was wild and we play a team sport and
- 8:35Speaker 4: i think you guys facilitate an environment that really makes
- 8:38Speaker 4: it feel like a team sport i remember on night
- 8:41Speaker 4: one uh we had just written princesses and you had
- 8:45Speaker 4: gone to an event to go grab dinner and you
- 8:47Speaker 4: were to come back and i went into the other
- 8:48Speaker 4: room uh where duane and tommy were working and i
- 8:51Speaker 4: was like trying to be very discerned just like tactful
- 8:54Speaker 4: but like not trying to step on anyone's toes like
- 8:56Speaker 4: hey can i hear what you're doing like I don't
- 8:58Speaker 4: want to Only if welcome I will totally leave And
- 9:01Speaker 4: they're like No no What do you think What do
- 9:02Speaker 4: you think And then that energy I feel like Went
- 9:05Speaker 4: into the rest Of the week for me Because we
- 9:07Speaker 4: were all Just trying to make Each other's songs better
- 9:09Speaker 4: And it was so communal And I mean I don't
- 9:12Speaker 4: like this Feeling like something We're doing by ourselves You
- 9:14Speaker 4: guys have that It's.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Really beautiful My favorite song I've ever been a part
- 9:17Speaker 5: of Writing During that week Unrealistic Oh I love that one.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It's on the It's on the new album Which is
- 9:25Speaker 1: coming Yeah. It's my favorite song I've ever been a
- 9:27Speaker 1: part of writing.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Wow.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Hell yeah. My favorite song I've ever written was also
- 9:30Speaker 1: with JP. Which song? It's not out yet, so I'm
- 9:32Speaker 1: not going to say the name.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Okay.
- 9:34Speaker 2: And it's going to be in a movie, which is
- 9:37Speaker 2: also something I can't say the name of the movie,
- 9:39Speaker 2: but we had to re-record the song today, the vocals today.
- 9:43Speaker 1: So that's what we were doing today in Toronto. That's
- 9:46Speaker 1: where you went. And then we wrote a song, because...
- 9:50Speaker 1: We had 30 minutes.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Because why would we not?
- 9:51Speaker 1: 30 minutes left. Write a song with JP. That makes sense.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And we did it. We're like, well, that's $ 4. 59. We
- 9:55Speaker 1: got to go. You guys missed a ton of really
- 9:57Speaker 1: exciting stuff on our end.
- 9:59Speaker 4: What happened? Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I got a facial. Ooh.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Oh, you know what?
- 10:03Speaker 1: I can tell. I walked in and she was like,
- 10:06Speaker 1: have you ever had an electro something facial? Oh, I
- 10:08Speaker 1: love it.
- 10:08Speaker 4: I was like.
- 10:09Speaker 1: What the hell?
- 10:10Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 10:11Speaker 1: She goes, I think maybe you might want to just
- 10:13Speaker 1: switch to the men's signature facial. And I was like,
- 10:16Speaker 1: I think you're right. I did it, and it felt fantastic.
- 10:20Speaker 1: It's got all the stuff moving in my sinuses. How
- 10:23Speaker 1: are you feeling? I'm still kind of battling. Got it.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Fighting a good fight. You look good.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Not a lot. Your skin is... Is it glowing? It
- 10:34Speaker 1: is pretty nice right now. I appreciate that. Also, this week,
- 10:39Speaker 1: Kevin's kind of gone viral. Delete the thread! I love
- 10:45Speaker 1: the buttons. Well, we'll just quickly catch you up.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Kevin accidentally sent a picture of him exposing himself on
- 10:51Speaker 2: our football giants group thread.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I sent my peen in a picture.
- 10:55Speaker 4: To the football giants group chat?
- 10:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:58Speaker 4: To your wife, I assume?
- 11:00Speaker 1: No, no. To the boys. No, no. That was the
- 11:01Speaker 1: intended recipient. No, no.
- 11:03Speaker 4: I don't understand. Help.
- 11:05Speaker 5: I was sending a photo of a TV that had
- 11:08Speaker 5: a news announcement about the giants. It's in my bathroom
- 11:12Speaker 5: and the TV's in our bathroom.
- 11:13Speaker 1: The backsplash. is a mirror.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, that's so good.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Oh my gosh!
- 11:20Speaker 4: You're so quick. It's amazing. Who responded first?
- 11:24Speaker 1: It wasn't a lot, but it was a lot. The
- 11:27Speaker 1: thing that made it funny was his follow-up text once
- 11:29Speaker 1: he realized. It was, guys, I'm so sorry, was the
- 11:33Speaker 1: first one. Please delete the photo. And then eventually, cuck
- 11:38Speaker 1: my life. Auto-corrected. Which made it worse. And then the
- 11:42Speaker 1: final one was delete the thread, which is the funniest
- 11:45Speaker 1: shit I've ever heard. Delete the thread! It's like stop
- 11:48Speaker 1: the count.
- 11:49Speaker 5: So it's been an interesting few days.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I see.
- 11:55Speaker 4: But you've made it something that is working in your favor.
- 11:57Speaker 4: And in that sense, you did something that could.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Have been embarrassing. Keeping the giants in the news. I've
- 12:02Speaker 1: got a question. Keeping the faith. Is that what you're
- 12:05Speaker 1: calling the dick pic? It's called giants in the news.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate that.
- 12:13Speaker 2: You know, JP, I think you're like a mastermind when
- 12:16Speaker 2: it comes to like listening to someone and you'll be like,
- 12:20Speaker 2: you said about three hours ago, this thing, and I'm
- 12:22Speaker 2: going to put it in a song. Now, have you
- 12:25Speaker 2: ever had kind of even an accidental text or thing
- 12:30Speaker 2: that might've been a mishap turn into a great song
- 12:33Speaker 2: lyric for yourself?
- 12:34Speaker 4: A mishap text. I have my communicative mind so locked down.
- 12:40Speaker 4: I overthink everything I'm going to say to someone I
- 12:44Speaker 4: love like eight to 17 times. So it very rarely
- 12:47Speaker 4: goes awry unless there's like a little bit of alcohol involved.
- 12:51Speaker 4: And that happens when we're writing songs. I find that
- 12:56Speaker 4: you all have this habit of just saying like really
- 12:58Speaker 4: fascinating things. Like sometimes, you know, you're doing it and
- 13:01Speaker 4: sometimes you don't. So it's just kind of fun to
- 13:04Speaker 4: be in my position trying to listen real carefully and
- 13:05Speaker 4: think like that's like the thing you said about the
- 13:07Speaker 4: bakery earlier.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Yeah. It was notable to me. What did you say
- 13:10Speaker 1: about the bakery? I want to know. I said, what
- 13:13Speaker 1: did I say?
- 13:13Speaker 4: You said, I ain't going to sugarcoat it. This ain't
- 13:15Speaker 4: a bakery. I kind of love that. You said, this
- 13:19Speaker 4: ain't a bakery. I ain't going to sugarcoat it. And
- 13:20Speaker 4: I was like, it's excellent. That should be kept.
- 13:23Speaker 1: So we're putting it in a song. Did you mean
- 13:25Speaker 1: to say that it was like a line in a
- 13:26Speaker 1: song or you just said that in conversation? We were
- 13:28Speaker 1: having a conversation.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it was just telling stories.
- 13:30Speaker 1: It's kind of hard. It's hard.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Right?
- 13:31Speaker 1: It's a hard line. You should write for Drake. Speaking
- 13:35Speaker 1: of alcohol.
- 13:37Speaker 4: The chartreuse has led to me saying things I shouldn't
- 13:39Speaker 4: have said.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Or maybe should have. Maybe should have but was afraid to.
- 13:42Speaker 1: We decided to provide some chartreuse for the podcast today.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Thank you. Because we know you love it. Tell us
- 13:48Speaker 1: why you love chartreuse so much and the history behind
- 13:51Speaker 1: this beverage that is kind of a, it's sort of
- 13:54Speaker 1: an anomaly.
- 13:54Speaker 4: It's quite mystical. I will tell you the story of chartreuse.
- 13:57Speaker 4: I have to just like get off of my chest
- 13:59Speaker 4: that I feel like minorly guilty for any bad feelings
- 14:01Speaker 4: that any of you are feeling the day after my
- 14:03Speaker 4: release party. But it was so deeply sweet of you
- 14:05Speaker 4: to celebrate with me.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Also a line we spoke about. I said, be tired
- 14:08Speaker 1: for the right people. And what did you say?
- 14:09Speaker 4: Gotta be sleepy for the right reasons.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Amen. I love this.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Guys.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Guys. Bars. In 30 minutes. We should wrap up this
- 14:14Speaker 1: pod and go write some music.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:16Speaker 1: We were.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I mean, admittedly, the first few minutes of us having
- 14:21Speaker 4: this conversation, I was still trying to find a rhyme
- 14:23Speaker 4: for answer.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I could see that. We clock you now. We got
- 14:27Speaker 1: you now.
- 14:28Speaker 4: I got it, though.
- 14:28Speaker 1: We see you when you're in it. Also good. I
- 14:32Speaker 1: love that part of the process. Before we have our
- 14:34Speaker 1: sips of structures, for the non-songwriters out there and for
- 14:36Speaker 1: the songwriters, one of the things that is most, I think,
- 14:40Speaker 1: fulfilling or gratifying about the songwriting process is when you
- 14:44Speaker 1: know you can beat something and you're that close and
- 14:47Speaker 1: you get to solve the math problem. When you finally
- 14:50Speaker 1: break it open, and it's happened with you and I
- 14:53Speaker 1: and the four of us a few times, where you're like,
- 14:55Speaker 1: it's not right, it's not right, and all of a
- 14:56Speaker 1: sudden it just becomes the right thing. Oh, it was
- 14:59Speaker 1: always in front of us. Yeah. I mean, the most
- 15:02Speaker 1: recent one, I will say, happened on Listen When Sad.
- 15:05Speaker 1: When we got to the end of the chorus, it
- 15:06Speaker 1: was Listen When Sad and then Call Me. on the
- 15:09Speaker 1: writing of the CD, that's the note. I was like,
- 15:11Speaker 1: that's such an interesting, fun way to say that thing.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I love that song.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Cheers, guys. Thanks, man. Love you. I don't know if
- 15:16Speaker 1: I've ever actually had char-juice. Love you, love you.
- 15:19Speaker 4: You're welcome.
- 15:20Speaker 1: It's quite good. Very warm.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Have you never had the char-juice bottles I've been putting
- 15:25Speaker 4: on the table at the studios?
- 15:26Speaker 1: I've never had it. Only when tequila ran out. I
- 15:30Speaker 1: can say this would be great after, like, dinner drink. Like,
- 15:34Speaker 1: I get it. It's good for your belly.
- 15:35Speaker 4: I think often used in aperitif vibes. Okay, my disclaimer,
- 15:38Speaker 4: I don't, I'm not.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Sponsored by Chartreuse.
- 15:41Speaker 4: Sponsored by Chartreuse. I'm not sure the monks are sponsoring anyone.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Nor am I from France, nor am I a monk.
- 15:47Speaker 4: But there are some French monks.
- 15:48Speaker 1: The last one, you know, maybe.
- 15:50Speaker 4: I'm so far from being a monk. Nah, you're pretty
- 15:53Speaker 4: damn close. No, I'm so chaotic, Kevin.
- 15:54Speaker 1: You're deeply connected to your spiritual source. Thank you. I
- 16:00Speaker 1: appreciate that.
- 16:01Speaker 4: I do think as songwriters, sometimes people misunderstand our ability
- 16:04Speaker 4: to navigate our emotions for our ability to articulate how
- 16:07Speaker 4: badly we navigate our emotions.
- 16:08Speaker 1: That's true. Damn, say that again twice? What?
- 16:11Speaker 4: Sorry, I took one sip and I started talking speedy, speedy.
- 16:15Speaker 4: I think that our job is not necessarily to have
- 16:18Speaker 4: the right answers to go about our lives emotionally. It
- 16:21Speaker 4: is just to represent authentically and honestly how we have
- 16:25Speaker 4: not necessarily always gotten our emotional lives right sometimes. Not
- 16:29Speaker 4: that there is a right or wrong to these things.
- 16:31Speaker 4: There is a messy and an honest.
- 16:33Speaker 1: So real.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Which is what we're trying to be in these songs.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Messy and honest and transparent in the chartreuse. Yeah.
- 16:39Speaker 1: It's kind of messy and honest. Made by monks is what.
- 16:41Speaker 4: We're getting at.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Yes.
- 16:42Speaker 4: So the monks.
- 16:43Speaker 1: They don't share the recipe, right? That's the whole deal.
- 16:45Speaker 1: It's a secret. There's like two people that know it?
- 16:47Speaker 1: Three people?
- 16:48Speaker 4: I think there's two of them that know about it.
- 16:50Speaker 4: This is the lore. It's from 1600s. I think it
- 16:52Speaker 4: says on the bottle. I'm not going to read it.
- 16:53Speaker 4: I'm going to do my own version of this. Uh,
- 16:56Speaker 4: Hundreds of years, secret recipe. They made it for their prayers.
- 16:58Speaker 4: They started sharing. They started selling. And now we get
- 17:01Speaker 4: to write.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Songs with it.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:03Speaker 1: And it's how much alcohol content? Oh, 50, 55%. That's
- 17:09Speaker 1: not too crazy. It's not anything small. It's sort of
- 17:11Speaker 1: like a strong, strong, strong wine.
- 17:14Speaker 4: If it can bring the monks closer to God, it
- 17:17Speaker 4: can bring us closer to each other.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Well, cheers. Cheers, guys. Let's transition this conversation from the
- 17:22Speaker 1: monks for a moment.
- 17:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I read this, and I just got to understand.
- 17:26Speaker 5: It says it on my little she hears, but it
- 17:28Speaker 5: says that you got really good at Jeopardy during COVID.
- 17:32Speaker 4: Wow. I wonder where that was found. I think I'm
- 17:34Speaker 4: probably worse.
- 17:37Speaker 1: This one brought to you by perplexity.
- 17:40Speaker 4: I do like watching Jeopardy. I mean, I feel like
- 17:42Speaker 4: even if you get one out of 10 answers right,
- 17:43Speaker 4: if you get an answer watching Jeopardy before the contestants do,
- 17:47Speaker 4: there are a few feelings better.
- 17:48Speaker 1: For sure.
- 17:49Speaker 4: There are some.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:51Speaker 5: I've tried that with Wheel of Fortune, but my spelling
- 17:54Speaker 5: is horrific. I get angry at them when they don't
- 17:56Speaker 5: get it right on Wheel of Fortune. I just yell
- 17:58Speaker 5: at them. Jeopardy, it's fun. It resets every few seconds.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Yeah. I love a dork.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Just a big fan of someone who knows a lot
- 18:04Speaker 4: about an innocuous thing.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I get it. Likes Jeopardy. Doesn't love. So we've learned that.
- 18:11Speaker 1: We've established that now.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 18:12Speaker 4: I wouldn't make it like an identity thing.
- 18:13Speaker 1: That doesn't seem like the thing I know about you.
- 18:15Speaker 1: That's why I had to ask it.
- 18:16Speaker 4: It's a taste thing more than like a sense of
- 18:18Speaker 4: stuff thing.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Joe, do you have any other unimportant questions to ask?
- 18:22Speaker 1: This is so fun.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Cause usually like in our professional settings, I am asking
- 18:25Speaker 4: the three of you questions. This is a fun little
- 18:27Speaker 4: switch up.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I mean, I have a lot of questions for JP.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I think, you know, it's fun to have friends on
- 18:33Speaker 2: the podcast. I think that's one thing for us, for
- 18:35Speaker 2: the listener out there, you know, we have, we have guests,
- 18:37Speaker 2: but I think when we know somebody so well and personally,
- 18:40Speaker 2: and then we really read something on our wonderful cards
- 18:44Speaker 2: that our producers help us with, then we're like, I didn't.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Know about this.
- 18:48Speaker 2: I want to turn it back to what you were
- 18:50Speaker 2: saying about you have a place with your dad now.
- 18:52Speaker 2: What has been the biggest thing you've learned about yourself
- 18:55Speaker 2: living with your father?
- 18:56Speaker 1: Again.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Would you like a fun, cute answer to that or
- 18:59Speaker 4: a more involved, emotional answer to that?
- 19:01Speaker 1: I want both.
- 19:03Speaker 4: We'll go with emotionally involved first. I think for a
- 19:06Speaker 4: long time I associated when it came to taking care
- 19:10Speaker 4: of your parents, getting your mom a place, taking care
- 19:13Speaker 4: of your mom, point of pride, point of success. Like this, like,
- 19:17Speaker 4: oh my gosh, I got my mom a place. For
- 19:19Speaker 4: whatever reason, I never applied it to my dad. I
- 19:21Speaker 4: think the reason is sort of an internalized misogyny, like
- 19:25Speaker 4: problematic concept of masculinity. That's like no men should be
- 19:27Speaker 4: able to take care of themselves. Like it's almost like
- 19:30Speaker 4: a weird aversion to it being him I was taking
- 19:34Speaker 4: care of. But the truth is like my dad was
- 19:35Speaker 4: the much more present parent. He was the one who
- 19:39Speaker 4: took me to all the practices and drove me to
- 19:40Speaker 4: school and was like an unbelievably loving father and present parent.
- 19:45Speaker 4: And I had to unlearn whatever, the therapy, the books,
- 19:49Speaker 4: the reading, the like. self-exploration of what it was that
- 19:52Speaker 4: came with some sort of judgment to take care of
- 19:54Speaker 4: my dad the way I would never have judged taking
- 19:57Speaker 4: care of my mom. So long-winded answer to your question,
- 20:00Speaker 4: how is it feeling now? It's feeling just wonderful. Like
- 20:03Speaker 4: I get to kick it with someone who would be
- 20:04Speaker 4: my friend if he wasn't my dad because he's just
- 20:06Speaker 4: so strange, imperfect, and I I love getting his perspective
- 20:10Speaker 4: on the life that we are both living.
- 20:12Speaker 1: It's beautiful. And the fun whimsical thing.
- 20:15Speaker 4: I get to like see sort of his lens on
- 20:18Speaker 4: the world is so dramatically different than mine. So he
- 20:21Speaker 4: has like, he has funny takes. Like he, he's a
- 20:24Speaker 4: man of the stoop as lately he sits on the
- 20:26Speaker 4: stoop and he watches the world go by. And he,
- 20:29Speaker 4: he has little conversations with people who he gets very
- 20:31Speaker 4: excited about the conversations he has with people on the stoop.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Love that. I made a video about him on his stoop.
- 20:36Speaker 4: So people have, have sought him out on the stoop,
- 20:37Speaker 4: which he quite likes.
- 20:39Speaker 1: That's fantastic. I love that. A stoop dweller. Stoop dweller.
- 20:42Speaker 1: So cool. Let me ask you, the takes are about
- 20:45Speaker 1: what he's seeing or about the world in general?
- 20:47Speaker 4: It's a little bit of both. He's quite fascinated by
- 20:50Speaker 4: all of the things going on in Trinity Bellwoods Park.
- 20:52Speaker 1: And kind of just like watching it. Yeah. As an observer.
- 20:55Speaker 4: He observes.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Yeah. He considers.
- 20:56Speaker 4: He ponders.
- 20:57Speaker 1: I love that.
- 20:58Speaker 4: And he doesn't do it. I have a bit of
- 20:59Speaker 4: a productivity obsession, which has led to wonderful things in
- 21:03Speaker 4: my life and occasionally seeps the joy out of things
- 21:06Speaker 4: as well. that I would like things to have some
- 21:10Speaker 4: sort of forward momentum function in order to lean into them.
- 21:14Speaker 4: And he doesn't have that. He just, he's good at
- 21:17Speaker 4: joy for the sake of joy.
- 21:18Speaker 1: That's beautiful. Do you people watch?
- 21:20Speaker 4: I think, I think I do people watch.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Love people watching. Same.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Especially airport people watching. I forget they can see you back.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yeah. That's, that's problematic. Yeah. Can be, maybe not.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Nick and I found ourselves like I was giving Nick
- 21:34Speaker 2: a play by play. We were at a, a spot
- 21:38Speaker 2: having some beers in New York. And I was like, dude,
- 21:40Speaker 2: I've never done that.
- 21:41Speaker 5: Never.
- 21:41Speaker 2: And I looked at Nick and I was like the
- 21:43Speaker 2: couple or the date that's going on behind, but you
- 21:46Speaker 2: were really fascinated by that. I was like, I was like,
- 21:47Speaker 2: this is like total rom-com. Like he, it was bringing
- 21:51Speaker 2: you a lot of joy. It was. I was like
- 21:53Speaker 2: to this point about the joy in her eyes on
- 21:55Speaker 2: this date. And when he got up to use the bathroom,
- 21:56Speaker 2: she was just like, I was like, I think she
- 21:58Speaker 2: just met her husband. we were like seeing people fall
- 22:01Speaker 2: in love falling in love and it was really beautiful
- 22:03Speaker 2: like he went to go and he came back with
- 22:05Speaker 2: another run of drinks for them so I couldn't see
- 22:07Speaker 2: it so I was getting the play by play from
- 22:08Speaker 2: Joe the whole time I was just like oh wow
- 22:10Speaker 2: imagine they're surprised they're like Joe Jonas is narrating our
- 22:12Speaker 2: entire love story to his brother to his brother I
- 22:14Speaker 2: was like Nick I was like oh man she's like
- 22:17Speaker 2: he's opening up to her right now about something like
- 22:19Speaker 2: really deep in his life I was like I was
- 22:21Speaker 2: there you were in it I couldn't hear her at
- 22:22Speaker 2: them but I'm like I know that conversation he was
- 22:25Speaker 2: getting very vulnerable and I was like just like proud
- 22:27Speaker 2: of him I was like, I don't know this guy,
- 22:28Speaker 2: but I'm proud of him. And she was just like,
- 22:30Speaker 2: her hand was on her chin.
- 22:32Speaker 1: And she just was like, this guy is like, it was.
- 22:35Speaker 4: He's so open.
- 22:36Speaker 1: I'm going to say this statement and hope that it's
- 22:43Speaker 1: the proper usage. Because I want to start using this.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Hope begets hope. Isn't that good? Really good. Begets. We
- 22:50Speaker 1: don't say it enough. Begets is a good word. Begets.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Baguettes like baguettes not french baguettes yeah not baguettes.
- 22:56Speaker 1: But it's a really good word think about it this
- 22:59Speaker 1: is my hot baguettes it's like the more you do
- 23:01Speaker 1: a thing the more it's it's a really beautiful.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Yeah i hope it gets bad it's good hope it
- 23:07Speaker 5: gets hope fear but gets fear fear yeah.
- 23:10Speaker 4: One shard of chart oh my gosh it's gone the
- 23:12Speaker 4: words are gone that's it so okay we have a
- 23:15Speaker 4: bowl of questions.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Here it's the perfect time to answer some questions it
- 23:18Speaker 1: is It's right here. It's got nothing to do with
- 23:21Speaker 1: your life or career.
- 23:22Speaker 4: It's just thoughts and concerns.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Sometimes they are, and it relates, but it's weird.
- 23:28Speaker 4: Last thing you said out loud to yourself when you
- 23:30Speaker 4: were alone.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Oh, no. It was oh, no. Cock my life. Oh, no. Perfect.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Cock my life.
- 23:41Speaker 4: What item would you take with you to the moon?
- 23:43Speaker 1: A friend. A friend. That's great.
- 23:45Speaker 4: How many do you want me to do? This is fun.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I think keep going. You're nailing this.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Okay. You have to spend 24 hours handcuffed to one celebrity.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Who would make the day the least unbearable? Can I
- 23:54Speaker 4: have three hands and three handcuffs?
- 23:56Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 23:56Speaker 1: I think he's talking about us.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Hey.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Perfect. Lovely.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Let's do one more.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Someone offers you $ 100, 000 to give up your phone for
- 24:03Speaker 4: a year. Could you do it? Obviously.
- 24:04Speaker 2: I would.
- 24:05Speaker 4: If I could exist fully, if I would be supported,
- 24:08Speaker 4: I would give up my phone for a year for free.
- 24:10Speaker 4: But thank you for the $ 100, 000. Wow.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Okay, well, we have a voicemail. Speaking of phones. Yeah,
- 24:14Speaker 2: we have a voicemail next. People call in and ask
- 24:17Speaker 2: us advice, things that we are not professionals on. But
- 24:20Speaker 2: sometimes it's advice, sometimes it's just thoughts.
- 24:24Speaker 4: All right, guys.
- 24:24Speaker 1: It's our favorite part of the podcast. What's that? The
- 24:27Speaker 1: hotline has been absolutely blowing up. It's on fire. People
- 24:31Speaker 1: asking lots of exciting questions and reading advice on things.
- 24:34Speaker 1: And this one in particular is presented by our friends
- 24:37Speaker 1: at Hyundai. Make everyday epic in the Hyundai Palisade Hybrid.
- 24:41Speaker 2: And FYI, guys, every time you leave a voicemail, you're
- 24:44Speaker 2: automatically entered to a chance to win a trip to
- 24:46Speaker 2: Los Angeles to see our show at the Hollywood Bowl.
- 24:48Speaker 4: That's right.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Thanks to Hyundai, we will fly you in, put you
- 24:51Speaker 5: up in a hotel, box seats at our show at
- 24:53Speaker 5: the Hollywood Bowl.
- 24:54Speaker 1: It's the Burn It Up Tour all over again.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Hi, guys.
- 24:59Speaker 3: I need a little bit of advice. I'm navigating a
- 25:02Speaker 3: difficult conversation with my childhood best friend. She's been seeing
- 25:07Speaker 3: this guy who's 18 years older than her. They've been
- 25:11Speaker 3: together almost three years now. She's been very vocal with
- 25:14Speaker 3: him about wanting to settle down, maybe get a place together,
- 25:18Speaker 3: have a family, but because he's already been divorced and
- 25:23Speaker 3: has two teenagers, he's very hot and cold on the
- 25:26Speaker 3: subject altogether. Lately, she's been venting about it. She's obviously
- 25:31Speaker 3: frustrated and doesn't want to be the one making all
- 25:34Speaker 3: the sacrifices. But she stays, I think, because of a
- 25:38Speaker 3: long string of bad past relationships. So I've kind of
- 25:42Speaker 3: hit a wall. I don't really know what else to
- 25:44Speaker 3: tell her besides, you know, don't settle if it doesn't
- 25:46Speaker 3: feel good. I think it's totally fine for people to
- 25:50Speaker 3: admit they're just in a different stage of life. But
- 25:54Speaker 3: how would you navigate this conversation and give her better
- 25:57Speaker 3: support without overstepping or hurting her feelings um anyways thanks love.
- 26:03Speaker 1: You guys okay complicated issue kp sax thoughts.
- 26:07Speaker 4: Right to me on this right to you uh people
- 26:09Speaker 4: can be wonderful humans and they can also not love
- 26:13Speaker 4: you in the way that you deserve and those are
- 26:16Speaker 4: two separate things to consider so this man in this
- 26:21Speaker 4: woman's life might be wonderful. And all of those things
- 26:23Speaker 4: are true. And I'm sure all of the reasons that
- 26:25Speaker 4: she cares about him are valid and important and worth considering.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Now that does not mean he's loving her in a
- 26:30Speaker 4: way that she deserves or that is right. And she
- 26:34Speaker 4: deserves both of those things. She deserves someone that she
- 26:37Speaker 4: loves and someone who loves her in a way that
- 26:39Speaker 4: she loves. Wow. And it's very, it's very hard to
- 26:44Speaker 4: choose something that isn't actively choosing you. And it doesn't
- 26:46Speaker 4: sound like he's actively choosing her in the way that
- 26:48Speaker 4: she wants. And that's, really hard. So I'm not sure
- 26:51Speaker 4: that she can tell her friend what to do, but
- 26:52Speaker 4: she can certainly support her friend through a difficult thing.
- 26:54Speaker 4: And hopefully she'll arrive at a decision that is showing
- 26:56Speaker 4: herself love.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I think it's phenomenal advice. Sometimes as a friend of
- 27:01Speaker 1: a person that you're seeing go through a situation, the
- 27:04Speaker 1: best advice sometimes is to say nothing, let them live
- 27:10Speaker 1: their life and experience the thing, the good, the bad,
- 27:13Speaker 1: the ugly, and be there to support them after they've
- 27:18Speaker 1: gone through the journey that they have to go on.
- 27:20Speaker 1: In this case, I think the friend is committed. She
- 27:22Speaker 1: wants to be with this guy. She's going to. It
- 27:24Speaker 1: doesn't matter. All the things you just said are true.
- 27:28Speaker 1: But as a friend, you're not going to be able
- 27:30Speaker 1: to tell her that. She just has to live it
- 27:33Speaker 1: and figure out afterwards where she's going to receive her
- 27:41Speaker 1: healing from. And that's probably going to be from her
- 27:43Speaker 1: best friend. And I think also getting advice from too
- 27:46Speaker 1: many people can be... It gets wacky. It gets weird.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Everybody will be like, well. But also the thing happens,
- 27:53Speaker 1: which is always tough when friends start to chime in
- 27:55Speaker 1: and say like, oh yeah, I really never liked that
- 27:58Speaker 1: thing about this guy. Then you stay with the person.
- 28:01Speaker 1: That always lasts. That never lasts well.
- 28:02Speaker 2: I think you're doing a good job, but you just
- 28:04Speaker 2: got to let her do her thing and I think
- 28:07Speaker 2: be supportive.
- 28:08Speaker 5: The hard part is, as the friend, that you're sitting
- 28:11Speaker 5: there through the venting. You're just like, you seem unhappy,
- 28:14Speaker 5: but you're, you know, like it's that weird, like middle ground.
- 28:18Speaker 4: But to Nick's point, like listen and without fixing.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Listen when it's happening. Yeah.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Hard to just, hard to just listen and be there
- 28:24Speaker 4: and not try and fix anything. Cause sometimes your point,
- 28:27Speaker 4: it like, it, it usually doesn't work and sometimes makes
- 28:32Speaker 4: it worse. Even if you have the right idea, you're
- 28:34Speaker 4: good at that. You've, you've shown up for me in
- 28:36Speaker 4: that way.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:37Speaker 4: In similar circumstances.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Well, I wish your friend the best to our, our lovely, uh,
- 28:44Speaker 1: voicemail caller. Thanks, Hyundai. Thank you, Hyundai. Thanks, Hyundai. And
- 28:54Speaker 1: we have a show to play, I guess.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, we do.
- 28:55Speaker 2: We have to go write a song first. Well, if
- 28:57Speaker 2: you don't mind signing the wall behind you, JP, but
- 28:58Speaker 2: thank you for being on the pod with us. Congratulations
- 29:00Speaker 2: on the album.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Congrats on the album.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 29:02Speaker 1: It's so good. Guys, go stream, listen to it, buy it,
- 29:05Speaker 1: wherever you can. And go see him live. Okay, piano gang.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Love you a lot.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Love you.
- 29:08Speaker 1: JP Sachs.
