- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:11Tuesday with Barry Nixon and the host of the most, Jason Riley,
- 0:14the maestro, as we're very fond of calling him that around the
- 0:18Two Shot Studios. Jay, how you doing today, my
- 0:20friend? I'm doing great.
- 0:21That was a really nice, kind of warm intro.
- 0:24Yeah, kick that one off. Really well done.
- 0:26Well, at the time of this recording, we are still in the
- 0:29the month of Love. Yeah.
- 0:30So I got a lot of love to give Jay.
- 0:32And you know what? It's going to continue well past
- 0:34February. Really.
- 0:36Just giving you a heads up. Yeah, but it's going all year
- 0:38long. I'm excited for that.
- 0:39I've decided and you know. What makes you decide that this
- 0:43is the year that love is going to stretch the entire year?
- 0:46Because I think of all the years that you and I have been on this
- 0:49planet, I think we need love in 26 more than any other year
- 0:54aside from maybe I don't know, 1939.
- 0:57But we could have used some love back then.
- 0:59But now we need love more than ever.
- 1:01And we weren't there to help out in 1939.
- 1:03Where we are, we are here now. And perhaps we kick it off by
- 1:07raising a glass to love. Yeah.
- 1:09To love. What have you got?
- 1:11I don't think we've ever toasted to love before.
- 1:13This is kind of cool. No, there was that one time
- 1:16where you were kind of all in the I love you phase.
- 1:18That was a few years ago. You were loved.
- 1:20I love you to everything. And so we might.
- 1:22Have I'm still in that phase, I've just dialed it back a bit
- 1:25because it was getting weird it. Was it was.
- 1:28It was. Uncomfortable.
- 1:29Certain people. OK, you were asking me what I
- 1:31have. Jay, it's the Bushmills 12 year.
- 1:34You know, I love it. What about yourself?
- 1:36That's a real staple for you on the show.
- 1:38It really is. I was gifted and I've got a
- 1:40little bit left of classic Jameson.
- 1:42You know how much I love a classic shot, so absolutely to
- 1:46love. To love.
- 1:51Oh, by the way, Yeah, Maybe I should have tested this.
- 1:54But you, you and I got together on Friday, and you put out an
- 1:57idea that maybe sometimes I get a shiver from the first shot of
- 2:01the evening because it's on an empty stomach versus you have
- 2:04already had your dinner. And often times your first shot
- 2:07is smooth as a cold mountain stream.
- 2:10Yeah. And did you eat?
- 2:12No, I didn't have time. I'm again doing the empty
- 2:14stomach and again I felt the shiver.
- 2:16I think it's maybe you're on to something here.
- 2:18I think so. You have to eat before one of
- 2:20our episodes foods and drink the same whiskey and we're going to
- 2:24test that out. This is a proper lap unless you
- 2:26have a sandwich next to you and you'd like to snack before our
- 2:29second. Shot that'd be classy, wouldn't
- 2:31it? It's chowing down.
- 2:32Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, that's something for
- 2:35later, but this is going to be this episode.
- 2:37Jay is probably going to be pretty update heavy.
- 2:39We're going to do a 4K corner and some RIP from the headlines
- 2:43just to preview our audience so they know what they're in for.
- 2:46Yeah. Do you want me to kick off with
- 2:474K? Please do.
- 2:48All right? This is a 4K that you lent to
- 2:51me. Yes.
- 2:52I'm going to talk. Do we talk about it on the show?
- 2:54I think we might have talked about you were just receiving
- 2:56it. You hadn't even watched.
- 2:57It yet yeah, I think that that did but what I'm I got to jump
- 3:01in right away and just say you have watched it so quickly.
- 3:04This is already making my head spin.
- 3:06The fact that you are you only got it like not even a full week
- 3:09at the time of this recording and you've already watched it.
- 3:11This is insane. Yeah, executive producer Aldo
- 3:13Roma and I needed a Saturday movie and I said I've got it,
- 3:16Barry. I realized as I was holding it
- 3:19after you gave it to me, we're going to talk about, let me just
- 3:21show it fourteen O 8. Yeah, 2000.
- 3:25And seven, John Cusack, who did a fantastic job in this movie,
- 3:30also one of the executive producers, Harvey Weinstein.
- 3:33So if you're a fan of Harvey Weinstein, that hasn't aged well
- 3:36for him. But him and someone else from
- 3:37the Weinstein family were executive producers.
- 3:39It came up because this was back in the day when credits still
- 3:42ran at the front of. The film.
- 3:43That's right. You saw all of that.
- 3:46And it's based on a short story by Stephen.
- 3:47King. Stephen King.
- 3:48I didn't know this movie existed, to be honest with you,
- 3:51Barry. I thought it was something else.
- 3:53I don't know why you thought to lend it to me of all the movies
- 3:55that you get. And you brought this one to me
- 3:57because damn good. It's damn good.
- 4:00And I so I was like, since I don't know what this is, I'm not
- 4:03going to read the back of the package.
- 4:04I'm not going to look at anything.
- 4:05In fact, I asked ChatGPT only one thing, because I knew there
- 4:08was a director's cut because it said so on the disk.
- 4:10And which one did you watch? The director's cut, the unrated
- 4:13ChatGPT, I said just tell me the runtime of it and it's at 112
- 4:17minutes. So that's all I needed to know.
- 4:18So I wasn't going to get antsy, although, and I sat down to
- 4:20watch it. No idea.
- 4:23I I was I realized it was a Stephen King short story.
- 4:27Phenomenal, like a really great movie.
- 4:29John Cusack, like they're just some actors you can watch do
- 4:31almost anything and like, he's by himself for a good portion of
- 4:34this movie. Yeah, almost the whole thing.
- 4:36Yeah, almost the whole thing. And it just captivates you.
- 4:38And he's, he's a good for listeners and viewers, kind of a
- 4:43writer. Stephen King often writes about
- 4:45writers, yes, goes to haunted hotels and stays there.
- 4:49And no, he's a quite a skeptic of the spiritual side, so he
- 4:53likes to debunk these things. Yeah, because he's never come
- 4:56across anything real. Until now.
- 4:59Until now. And they try to keep him out of
- 5:01the room. Samuel L Jackson does another
- 5:03classic. You know, he likes to do small
- 5:04roles. He's not such a small role, but
- 5:06little chunks. He pops in and out of this movie
- 5:09and does a great Samuel L Jackson job.
- 5:12And then it's John Cusack. And like said, mostly by himself
- 5:16with a few other actors that come in and out.
- 5:18And he's in this haunted hotel room.
- 5:20Yeah. Yeah, in one room.
- 5:22In one room, the whole, the whole action mostly is in one
- 5:26room. And Samuel Jackson, he pops back
- 5:28up, but only in the director's cut.
- 5:29So in the theatrical, that middle piece where he kind of
- 5:33pops in when the he's freaking out, he opens the bar fridge
- 5:36door and he sees him down that long hallway that all that stuff
- 5:39is added for the director's cut that did not make it in the
- 5:42theatrical. Really.
- 5:43Wow. And that's.
- 5:44What I'm saying there was it's it just fleshes out the story
- 5:47far more like yeah, and doesn't feel rushed.
- 5:50I always I was the director's cut if you or sorry, the
- 5:53theatrical, if you do end up just out of curiosity, it's
- 5:56quite a bit shorter. It is a bit shorter, yeah.
- 5:58It's at least 10 or so minutes shorter.
- 6:00And yeah. Yeah.
- 6:01Anyway. OK.
- 6:02And so Samuel L Jackson, he's also at the end, he pops in at
- 6:04the end. That must have been in the
- 6:05director's in the original cut or no, Even at the cemetery.
- 6:08I'm trying to remember whether he was, I don't know.
- 6:11I think it might have ended with, well, I we can't say.
- 6:14Well, we just can't spoiler, you know, you're 20, almost almost
- 6:182020 movie. I think the final scene is John
- 6:22Cusack in the hotel room after it's been burnt out and he's
- 6:26talking to his dead daughter and he just turns away and walks.
- 6:29Yeah, like. Then vanishes and just says OK,
- 6:33we got to go. Who knows where he was going?
- 6:35We don't know. But I I think that added scene
- 6:37was put in for the directors that were Sam Jackson goes with
- 6:40the goes to the funeral and tries to return some of the dead
- 6:43writers belongings to his ex-wife.
- 6:45Doesn't want anything to do with it.
- 6:47And then he pops up as a burned face in the rearview mirror,
- 6:49which I thought was a nice little added jump at the very
- 6:52end. Like what was the OK?
- 6:54Jump scare. Yeah, there wasn't a lot of jump
- 6:56scares in the movie, but that one, yeah, pops in for almost no
- 7:00reason but. Really it's I felt like the
- 7:02clock radio going off with that song.
- 7:04There was a couple of movies, I was like holy shit.
- 7:06And then there was 1 crazy guy who comes charging at him and
- 7:10we're like what? Where the hell did this guy
- 7:11Serial? Killer kid, it looked like with
- 7:13the knife. Yeah.
- 7:14In fact, a quote from all those who watched it was, you know,
- 7:18oh, the movie's good when you've got sweaty palms.
- 7:20And I did like there was points when you're like, I'm, I'm
- 7:23anxious watching this movie because you're not sure what's
- 7:26going to happen next. Yeah.
- 7:28And then, and then when you think at one point he's out, you
- 7:30think he's out. And then.
- 7:32And then he's not, yeah, he's not out because yeah, I was
- 7:35like, it happened. I'm like, Oh yeah, the surfboard
- 7:37accident, I forgot about that. Of course that's going to come
- 7:38back into play because they made nothing of it.
- 7:40And then it did. But then that's a fake out.
- 7:43Yeah, yeah, yeah. Exactly the 4K itself.
- 7:46So 1 scene if they if that there was 1 scene that really stood
- 7:49out for me for 4K and it was because we were watching it in a
- 7:52dark room and it's when that doorway appears and he opens the
- 7:55door and then suddenly you just see the doorway tiny in the
- 7:58middle of the screen. That's black everywhere else.
- 8:00The blacks Berry the black. I couldn't tell where the TV
- 8:03ended and the rest of the room began.
- 8:06It was incredible. I was like, that's the 4K
- 8:08advantage. That and the, the black outfits
- 8:11at the end at the at the funeral, like when they're
- 8:13outside, it's like it's not Gray.
- 8:15There's no bluish coats. These are jet black outfits
- 8:18they're wearing. And it is, it's like just the
- 8:20absence of color. But the depth in the blacks was
- 8:23incredible. Yeah.
- 8:24And then you contrast that with those scenes at the beach, at
- 8:27his house, right on the beach where it's bright and sunny.
- 8:29It just felt like you could field out California sunshine.
- 8:32Yeah, it was really cool. I, I, I enjoyed the the movie as
- 8:35well. And you can't really argue with
- 8:37the with the transfer at all. If they did justice to a movie
- 8:41that's 20 years old. Steel box, yes.
- 8:43With a with. A slip cover and a digital code
- 8:47if you act now kids. But some of the disks in here
- 8:50like look at that. That's a great looking set right
- 8:52there. It is a good looking set and a
- 8:54lot of people online were saying that they appreciated the fact
- 8:57of having the director's cut on its own disk and not just
- 9:00shoehorned onto 1 where you could do like seamless
- 9:03branching. Yeah, that's not the thing on
- 9:05this. You can watch the director's cut
- 9:06on its own disk, which I guess allows it to flourish a little
- 9:10more in terms of picture and sound.
- 9:12By the way, did you enjoy the Atmos track?
- 9:14And I assume that you did. It was very good.
- 9:17Yeah, it was. The sounds are all around you,
- 9:19which is what you want in a haunted house kind of movie.
- 9:22Because for sure there's. Plenty going on behind you with
- 9:25creaks and knocks and stuff like that happening.
- 9:27Yeah, and like some heartbreaking stuff too, like
- 9:30where he's visiting his dying father and then his his dead
- 9:33daughter is kind of resurrected or he thinks she is for a time,
- 9:37and then she dies again in his arms and he's saying, don't do
- 9:40this to me again. It was like, holy crap.
- 9:43There was another cool scene where he was like, you know, on
- 9:46his laptop trying to have an Internet connection with his
- 9:49ex-wife on like a video call and it's not him it turns out.
- 9:53It's like the room is impersonating him and saying,
- 9:56oh, you need to come down here. They were trying to ensnare her
- 9:58as well. It was like, fuck, man, this
- 10:00thing is diabolical. This.
- 10:02Yeah. Everywhere you turn.
- 10:03Yeah, the room. The room not.
- 10:05Even how alive? That's what's so cool about.
- 10:07It's like it's not a ghost that of somebody that died in the
- 10:09room. It's the room itself is this
- 10:11evil room in a hotel and they had to rent it out because it
- 10:14was in good shape and then he caused the burning of the room
- 10:17and so forth. So it's still worth everybody
- 10:19check this thing out. This is a really good movie.
- 10:22Sure. And it wasn't just one person.
- 10:23Remember, Samuel Jackson said 56 deaths occurred and then they
- 10:27repeated it and said, like, John Hughes character was like 56.
- 10:31He's like, Yep. And he gave him the book.
- 10:33He said, I'll give you all the information.
- 10:34I just don't want you going in there.
- 10:35He didn't listen. You know, it's in that way, it's
- 10:37kind of a familiar trope where you don't heed the warning of
- 10:41the guy who actually knows what's up to your own peril.
- 10:44So anyway, great movie movie. Check it out.
- 10:46I love it. Absolutely.
- 10:47I'm happy to have it in my Stephen King library.
- 10:49It's definitely on the upper tier of King movies for sure.
- 10:53Yeah, his short stories, when they get adapted, that's the
- 10:56magic, because you can just build that.
- 10:58There's just so much depth in his stories that you can build
- 11:01that out. That's your Shawshank
- 11:02Redemption. That's your Stand by Me The
- 11:04Body. That's this.
- 11:05Short stories tend to, I think, translate better.
- 11:08To the running man. The running man, exactly.
- 11:10There you go. All right, Jay, I think we
- 11:13should get our second shot in there.
- 11:14I don't know about you, but to pretty thirsty after that.
- 11:16To love our love of 14 O 8 here's.
- 11:22Wonderful. Did you want to do a 4K or do
- 11:24you want to go to RIP from the headlines?
- 11:27I can just very briefly, because we were talking about swapping
- 11:29things back and forth. You were kind enough to give me
- 11:31not one, but two seasons of Seinfeld and 4K.
- 11:35I'm telling you right now, I am burning through season 8.
- 11:37I was amazing, probably 6 or 8 episodes already.
- 11:41By the way, perfect condition, no disk errors, no skipping, no
- 11:46nothing that you need to worry about.
- 11:47I'm more than happy to check. Thank you for loaning.
- 11:49But you were right. You said many moons ago we've
- 11:52been watching Seinfeld all wrong.
- 11:54And I didn't quite get it until I mean, season looks incredible.
- 11:58You wanna talk about details on the clothing on in Jerrys
- 12:01apartment? You can kind of you can almost
- 12:02make out some of the movies that were like on his shelf by the
- 12:06stereo, like just little things like that or just everything
- 12:09popping and it just looks fantastic.
- 12:10And these episodes also with the extra scene that we were losing
- 12:14because of TV and commercials, there's like these extra bits at
- 12:17the very end. I was like, I've never seen any
- 12:19of this. Yeah, as it went to syndication,
- 12:21they added in more commercials for syndication to make more
- 12:24money. So they've been chopping it back
- 12:26year over year. And now here we are.
- 12:28We get it in the full format. And like you said, I I owned the
- 12:32DVDs originally, yeah, but did that.
- 12:35Include that as well. Did they have?
- 12:36Those it was the full episode, but I mean, you weren't seeing
- 12:39details. You weren't reading the the
- 12:41movies that were on the shelf or the cereal boxes.
- 12:43Here we get to see everything. We we are in Seinfeld's world.
- 12:47I'm glad you are getting to enjoy it and test those discs
- 12:49for me. Yeah, I'm happy to do it, Jay.
- 12:52I'll test the rest of your collection.
- 12:54No problem at all because I'll be done before you even finish
- 12:57season 4. I think you're on season 4.
- 12:59I think anyway, it's fantastic. I and thank you very much for
- 13:02for that. And if anyone out there is
- 13:04considering a purchase, if you want to add Seinfeld 4K to your
- 13:07library, I think it's this is an absolute buy with confidence.
- 13:11It looks stunning and it is in the original 4 by 3.
- 13:14So if that bothers you, maybe you don't want the 4K
- 13:16restorations if you're a purest and you do want to see the best,
- 13:20but also have it in that original 4 by three format by
- 13:22with confidence. Great, which I like if you want
- 13:25the wide screen Blu-ray that you got to go Blu-ray because those
- 13:28are cut that way for and I'm sure with the four KTV that'll
- 13:31up convert nicely yeah. I didn't give a star rating 4.5
- 13:34out of stars I told you for 14 O 8.
- 13:37So I wanted that the extra .5 for the blacks.
- 13:39So, yeah, and that. The.
- 13:41Blacks that surround everything there.
- 13:44It's incredible. And yeah, it looks great.
- 13:46Anyway, OK, we have time for one RIP from the headlines, I
- 13:49believe. So why don't I scroll through
- 13:51some that you sent me? I'm gonna hit this one.
- 13:53I see a picture of something that you're going to like very
- 13:55much. So let me read the headline of
- 13:57this Fungi mining and giant waste piles.
- 14:01How to get rare earths without mining rock.
- 14:05And it's a picture of mushrooms, that's why.
- 14:07That's what attracted me, Jay. Yeah.
- 14:08I was thinking like, what else can these thing?
- 14:11What can't they do? Like it's almost the whole story
- 14:13in the headline there. Fungi mining and giant waste
- 14:16piles colon. How to get rare earths without
- 14:19mining rocks. What do you think?
- 14:20Barry I think it might be they're going to apply some
- 14:23pressure to those piles of rubbish and perhaps form
- 14:27something useful out of it. No, it makes me think of, you
- 14:30know, Superman 3 when he, when he uses all of his might and he
- 14:34takes that piece of coal and makes a diamond.
- 14:37I mean, I think that's, I mean, I don't know what, what else,
- 14:40what else could it be? A perfectly formed diamond,
- 14:43wasn't it? If I'm.
- 14:45Oh yeah, beautiful. Yeah, he didn't have to do
- 14:47anything to it. It was ready to go into a ring.
- 14:50Yeah, well, it would have been quite a ring.
- 14:53For sure, I think that perhaps this has to do with with how
- 14:59fungi are going to be instead of rare earth minerals, you're
- 15:02going to be able to use perhaps like dried out mushrooms to be
- 15:07able to to get some benefits from.
- 15:09What do you think about that? Well, I feel like those benefits
- 15:12are already here and for those who are in the know, they have
- 15:15been enjoyed for some time now. But you're talking about like,
- 15:18you know, like electronics application maybe because this
- 15:20is like a rare earths that they're trying to get which we
- 15:23need those minerals for phones and tablets and that kind of
- 15:27stuff. Imagine if a fungus would.
- 15:30Power a car powered iPhone. Yeah, or that.
- 15:33Yeah, imagine that. Just rub a mushroom on it and
- 15:35it's. I'm in.
- 15:36OK, well, we've got that. How about one more because we've
- 15:39got one more to go through. Yeah, that was.
- 15:40Quick. That was a quick one.
- 15:41How about this? Here's a question for you.
- 15:43Picture of a NASA space shuttle. Have you got what it takes to go
- 15:46to the moon? Barry, that's a question for
- 15:48you. Is it just go to the moon or
- 15:50live on the moon? I thought I'd said live go to.
- 15:52No. What it takes to go to.
- 15:53So you just got to get there, spend a few minutes, come back
- 15:55or you can live. If you got what it takes, What
- 15:58is it? Have you got what it takes?
- 15:59I definitely don't. I don't have what it takes to
- 16:01live there. Certainly not.
- 16:03Who do it to go there? Do you think you could survive?
- 16:06AI don't know man, you know, it's it's kind of a cool idea,
- 16:09but you know me, I'm a creature of habits.
- 16:11It like I like my I like my friendly environment like my
- 16:15friends my or my friends going if it's like a space shuttle
- 16:18load with you and a bunch of my, you know, closest besties.
- 16:21Yeah. OK, let's let's go let's go for
- 16:23a bit. But it's also dangerous as hell
- 16:25out there. And all it would take is 11
- 16:27little moon rock traveling at 14,000 kilometers an hour to
- 16:32crash into the thing and make a hole and next thing you know
- 16:35you're done. Well, that has very risky.
- 16:37Very risky. Hasn't happened, but the Artemis
- 16:392 mission is about to at the time of this recording.
- 16:41Hasn't happened yet, but NASA is planning to do a pass by like a
- 16:46go around the moon, just going around it around it and they're
- 16:49not landing. Yeah, I meant like rocks haven't
- 16:52been really penetrating the hulls of spaceship.
- 16:54We know how risky that we know. You're right, they don't tell us
- 16:57every time that happens. They don't, and there's a lot of
- 16:59debris, a lot of garbage, just like around the Earth, like old
- 17:02satellites and all kinds of shit that's.
- 17:04Up and I you're right and there's more every day so that
- 17:07that is risky and. Aliens are probably looking us
- 17:09like, why do we want to go there?
- 17:10It looks disgusting. What's that ring of trash that
- 17:13they have around there? They're somehow proud of that,
- 17:15maybe. That was Saturn.
- 17:16We were talking, talking about the ring on Saturn.
- 17:17Maybe it's just, but that's. Rock.
- 17:19That's rock, but it's not trash. Not trash like we.
- 17:22Don't know. We haven't.
- 17:23Just used Soviet era satellites I don't think.
- 17:26What about what about the fact you have to?
- 17:29I think you drink your own pee. Isn't that kind of what happens
- 17:32there? Like the water is recycled from
- 17:34your sweat and you're in and kind of anywhere.
- 17:36And all your friends too. So it's all like together.
- 17:39It's all, it's like a big old fruit punch of of human
- 17:43excrement being recycled for everybody.
- 17:45Raise a toast, Jay. I don't think you can also on
- 17:48the space shuttle. Do you think other than maybe 1
- 17:51celebratory bottle of champagne, I'm not sure right?
- 17:53There'd be room for like like a volume of 2, four cans or or
- 17:57even Guinness. Oh, I think we'd have to make
- 17:59room. OK.
- 18:00We'd have to, we'd have to jettison some other heavier
- 18:02cargo. They're like, what are you
- 18:03doing? That's that's the whole purpose.
- 18:05Yeah. Anyway, it's it's a cool thought
- 18:06experiment, but what about you? Just quickly before we wrap up,
- 18:09would you? Yeah.
- 18:10I don't think I have what it takes either.
- 18:11I kind of like to be around home.
- 18:13And yeah, you know, my omnibuses, they probably
- 18:17wouldn't allow as well for more room for other practices,
- 18:20optical things they may think about.
- 18:21But you could probably get one under your spacesuit.
- 18:24I might, but only one. Just the 1.
- 18:27So that's it. I don't think I would go.
- 18:28I think you and I could let it pass.
- 18:30There's a lot of people that would like to go.
- 18:31And I say, you know, good luck to them.
- 18:33God would want to take up their seat.
- 18:35OK, Yeah. Same.
- 18:37Great. Well, Speaking of taking up too
- 18:38much of a seat or too much time, I think we've used up ours for
- 18:42the day. And we have.
- 18:43Yeah, I think that's plenty. So 14 O eight.
- 18:46Check it out. Seinfeld.
- 18:47Bye with confidence in 4K. If you want our seats to the
