Latest / Faith On A Hill / Don't Yuck at Someone Else's Yum (Pt. 3) - D. Cates
Transcript
- 0:05Jacob's Sunday will be November first.
- 0:07I I was looking at the bulletin and it's got the wrong date on it.
- 0:12It is certainly good to see each one.
- 0:15The last couple of times uh that I have uh given a devotional message, I've developed a thought that came from Del Deverney's article, Don't Yuck at Someone Else's Yum.
- 0:31Saw a living example of this last night.
- 0:34we went to eat at Crystal because that's one of Maggie's favorite places.
- 0:38And afterward Dylan, who does not care as much about Crystal, was uh disparaging some of the quality of the food there.
- 0:48And I said, You are yucking her yum.
- 0:51And so that that that indeed happens.
- 0:55But then he said, Well, the the mustard and pickle actually did go good together.
- 0:59So I thought that was quite conciliatory on his behalf.
- 1:04It is very good to to see each one here by the way this evening.
- 1:09this evening uh I thought I would mention
- 1:17This Sunday?
- 1:17Okay.
- 1:19Time change this Sunday.
- 1:20Fall back.
- 1:22Fall back.
- 1:23So you'll gain an hour.
- 1:27All right.
- 1:28Excellent.
- 1:29A lot better than in the spring when you have to lose it.
- 1:36All right, thank you.
- 1:36I did not realize it's it's coming up here.
- 1:42We talked about Romans fourteen on Sunday evening.
- 1:46In Romans fourteen, uh, we were dealing with opinions.
- 1:51We also could associate conscience with Romans fourteen.
- 1:55We talked about some of the opinions and conscience matters, like the eating of meat offered to idols there in Romans fourteen, and some of the more modern ones, uh like
- 2:07whether the fruit of the vine and the bread need to have a
- 2:12cloth draped over them and things of that nature.
- 2:16But our opinions sometimes can extend far beyond the things that we mentioned the other day because our consciences usually pretty well justify themselves.
- 2:32We pretty well think that our consciences are well trained and therefore are good spiritual guides for us.
- 2:42What we need to realize is Scripture tells us that the conscience is not a reliable guide.
- 2:51In fact, we read in First Timothy 4 2 about those who have their consciences seared as with a hot iron.
- 3:03I've never branded cattle.
- 3:05I have an idea that Paul probably has, and maybe some others here have branded cattle before.
- 3:11I I've never done it, but I understand the process.
- 3:15I know that where that brand is put upon that animal, that animal is then seared, and nothing is ever going to be able to uh touch that area and cause any pain or anything
- 3:29there.
- 3:30Because all of those nerves were deadened.
- 3:34Well, first Timothy 4 2 then is saying we can deaden our consciences.
- 3:41To where we do not think about something that's wrong as being wrong.
- 3:48Years ago, and I've mentioned this once or twice, but years ago I was watching a show about the penitentiary system of the early nineteen hundreds.
- 3:58It was one of the episodes was about a place, I think it was in Pennsylvania or somewhere, but it was called the Big House.
- 4:08And they were quoting one of the
- 4:10men who was imprisoned there.
- 4:13He said that he wished all the world had one neck so that he could strangle it.
- 4:21Well, I have an idea that his conscience may have been a bit hardened.
- 4:26he he he he had done something through the years and allowed himself to be so moved to to wickedness that murder meant nothing.
- 4:39Absolutely nothing.
- 4:40To him, and he would have been quite happy if all the earth, all men, were killed.
- 4:50We can think about Paul.
- 4:53Paul, whom we remember as Saul, persecuting the church, present at the stoning of Stephen, holding the clothes of those who were performing that action.
- 5:05He's actually the one who gave the thumbs up or the thumbs down.
- 5:10It was he who decided that Stephen should be put to death.
- 5:14And then we encounter him on the road to Damascus.
- 5:17He was going to Damascus so that he could hail men and women to prison because of their Christianity.
- 5:25He's going to call himself the chiefest of sinners.
- 5:30But he also is going to say in Acts 23:1 that he had lived in all good conscience until that day.
- 5:41In other words, his conscience never offended him.
- 5:45He always thought that he was doing God's will, but ultimately he wasn't.
- 5:53Our consciences, then, which are not perfect guides, sometimes can become the standard by which we judge others, and by which we treat others, and by which we tell others what they
- 6:09should and should not do.
- 6:13What movies they can and cannot see, what television shows they can and cannot watch.
- 6:20What games they can and cannot play, what sports they can and cannot support, and so forth.
- 6:28There are certainly some movies which we would not need to watch.
- 6:33Some television shows likewise would fall into that category.
- 6:37But many of the shows we might not like because of some personal scruple that we have, but it's not one that's a sinful matter.
- 6:50And yet our consciences might say, I'm going to condemn the other person.
- 6:57We see in Romans 14, 23, that whatsoever is not from faith is sin.
- 7:06There are basically two things.
- 7:09There are the revelation of God, and there are not the revelation from God.
- 7:16Our consciences are not automatically attuned.
- 7:20to the revelation of God, and therefore our consciences sometimes are supporting, maybe allowing sin in our lives.
- 7:35In First Timothy one five, Paul said, Now the end of the commandment is charity, love, out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience.
- 7:49And of a faith unfeigned.
- 7:51Paul was telling Timothy that the conscience is, though, valuable.
- 7:56It is good, and our actions need to be based on love and a well trained conscience, a pure heart, a faith unfeigned.
- 8:09How do they get into that condition?
- 8:12They get into that condition because we train them.
- 8:17We mold them.
- 8:19We see in Hebrews 5 14 a contrast between those who still need spiritual milk and those who are prepared to eat spiritual meat because their senses have been exercised to discern
- 8:36good and evil.
- 8:37That's what we're striving for.
- 8:40Are we ever going to be able to do that perfectly?
- 8:43Well, it'd be difficult.
- 8:46But perhaps we can so train our consciences.
- 8:50Whatever the case, when the opportunity comes down to it and our consciences are saying one thing or the other, you and I should defer to what the Word of God says.
- 9:03And not yuck someone's yum based upon some personal scruples which we might have in our consciences.
- 9:14This evening the the lesson like the last couple from this have not necessarily been about how one can become a Christian, but rather how we need to be careful about dealing with
- 9:26others and about reaching out to others with our influence that hopefully will encourage them to obey the gospel.
- 9:38But it may be the case that you're here and you're not a Christian.
- 9:41You need to hear his word and believe it.
- 9:45Pardon me.
- 9:47Connor tagged me.
- 9:50Heard the word and believed, repented of our sins.
- 9:53Need to repent of your sins.
- 9:55put those sins behind you, Isaiah fifty nine, one and two, because those are what separate us from God.
- 10:02Confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, then be baptized so that the sins can be washed away, so that you can go down into that watery grave of baptism to come up a new
- 10:12creature.
- 10:14uh cleansed, made whole, reborn.
- 10:18If you need to respond to the Lord's invitation tonight, either to become a Christian or to be restored to faithfulness, won't you come as together we stand and sing.
