- 0:00A troubling and terrifying conflict in and of itself.
- 0:03The Vietnam War cost many lives, but those who died didn't always
- 0:07stay dead. Or so according to some men who
- 0:10fought it. These are a few stories in
- 0:12particular that poses terrifying and creepy question.
- 0:15Were the dead coming back to life and the deep jungles of
- 0:19Vietnam. While carrying out their duty,
- 0:28Marines in Vietnam would often try to recruit locals to help
- 0:31guide them in the area of operations.
- 0:34In some areas, however, the locals were fearful of going
- 0:38into the densest, darkest parts of the jungle.
- 0:40The reason, they found, was the local superstition that phantoms
- 0:45called the Maw supposedly occupied the trees there.
- 0:48Locals also warned the US troops that reanimated corpses awaited
- 0:53them in the trees because these moth phantoms would possess the
- 0:57bodies of the dead. The Marines, of course, shrugged
- 1:00the stories off as folklore, since Vietnam was a very
- 1:04spiritual place. They had heard many stories from
- 1:06the superstitious local folk, so at this point it was almost
- 1:10laughable to them. Starting in 1965, however, it
- 1:14allegedly became very real. American troops in the jungles
- 1:18of Vietnam began reporting seeing ghostly apparitions
- 1:21moving supernaturally through the trees.
- 1:24Others reported Fang creatures with black eyes that would try
- 1:27and kidnap and consume unsuspecting troops.
- 1:30In one encounter, the beasts were found to be bulletproof.
- 1:34Over 400 rounds were fired at the creatures, and none of them
- 1:38seem to be fazed by what would have annihilated any other
- 1:41mortal being. In several other instances, it
- 1:44was found that the corpses of the freshly killed Viet Cong
- 1:47were coming back to life. It didn't matter what time of
- 1:51day it was, the corpses. Lived by both day and night.
- 1:55They chained several of them up for high command to observe and
- 1:58decide a way. Forward and after observing the
- 2:01reanimated corpses, their eyes wide and flesh rotting yet still
- 2:06living and hungering for me, they decided to conduct several
- 2:10morbid experiments and finally a decision was made.
- 2:15Since the triple canopy jungle kept the sunlight from hitting
- 2:18them, the military's top brass decided to get rid of it.
- 2:22Besides cloaking an elusive enemy while they were alive,
- 2:26they were now dealing with supernatural forces beyond their
- 2:28understanding. And this is supposedly why the
- 2:32US military developed Agent Orange and Napalm.
- 2:36Agent Orange to kill the top canopy and napalm to annihilate
- 2:40anything that could be left standing, dead or alive, and
- 2:43anything that survived. Both of these weapons would be
- 2:46finished off by the flamethrowers.
- 2:51Another creepy tale comes from a man who lived one of the most
- 2:55dangerous jobs in all of the US military during the Vietnam War,
- 2:59being an army tunnel rat. For those of you who don't know,
- 3:02the army tunnel rats were troops who would crawl into NVA and
- 3:06Vietcong tunnels to eradicate the troops that hid below the
- 3:09surface. These tunnels often
- 3:11interconnected for 10s of miles, housing both troops, munitions,
- 3:16food and apparently secret weapons.
- 3:19It was one of the war's most dangerous jobs, crawling around
- 3:22in the dark, avoiding booby traps and trying to kill the
- 3:26enemy before they killed you. This tunnel Rab was crawling
- 3:30into the deepest tunnel he had ever seen, along with his
- 3:33partner. When they finally arrived in the
- 3:35main room, they were astonished that no booby traps were set and
- 3:40an oil lamp was still lit. The only thing they found was a
- 3:43tarp, but when they moved the tarp they revealed a set of
- 3:47stone stairs moving deeper underground.
- 3:50The stairs were odd, definitely not built by VC, They looked
- 3:54centuries old. The two men cautiously climbed
- 3:57down the stairs, guns drawn. When they came upon another
- 4:00tarp. Cautiously, the rats moved the
- 4:03tarp with their pistols and fixed their flashlights on, 10
- 4:07or so VC. But these VC had blank faces
- 4:11looking off into space, bodies rocking back and forth, and
- 4:16their eyes were a solid black color.
- 4:19The men waved their flashlights and weapons in their faces, but
- 4:22nothing stopped their rocking motion.
- 4:24They now observed that their weapons were rusted in a pile in
- 4:28the corner, and at the head of the room was a golden icon of a
- 4:32naked woman, except the lower half of her body featured 8
- 4:36tentacles instead of human legs. One of the men felt compelled to
- 4:40touch the statue, but right before he made contact he was
- 4:43stopped by his partner. Shortly after this they came to
- 4:47a consensus that they needed to leave.
- 4:49They decided to rig the room in the entrance with C4 and bail as
- 4:53fast as possible. But as they were leaving, they
- 4:56began to hear a woman's voice call out to them asking them to
- 5:00stay. After exiting the whole, the
- 5:02tunnel was bombed and collapsed. The incident went unreported due
- 5:06to the strange nature of it all and not wanting to risk any
- 5:09embarrassment or their mental state being called into
- 5:12question. So that's a few interesting
- 5:15stories I came across. What are your thoughts on the
- 5:18whole thing? Were zombies taking out troops
- 5:20in the deep jungles of Vietnam during the war?
- 5:23Were the VC worshipping some kind of strange ancient deity?
- 5:27Let me know down in the comments below.
- 5:29I personally think anything is possible, but it could just be
- 5:32really well constructed folklore or short stories.
- 5:35I tried to find some official documents but couldn't find any,
- 5:39but it's still made for some entertainment nonetheless.
- 5:41I also wanted to give a shout out to of Sundered's son.
- 5:44He's the artist that made some of the stills for this video.
- 5:47I'll go ahead and leave a link here for his channel.
- 5:49Make sure to go check him out. I know he's got some new videos
- 5:51coming out here pretty soon. Don't forget to like this video

- 6:03Virginia, three boys witnessed a bright object streak across the
- 6:07sky and crash into a nearby field.
- 6:11Upon witnessing this strange event, they ran to one of the
- 6:14boys homes and reported the incident to their parents.
- 6:18What followed as one of the strangest extraterrestrial
- 6:21encounters ever recorded? Today we will be discussing the
- 6:26Flatwoods Monster here on Mystery Archives.
- 7:11on September 12th, 1952 in Flatwoods, WV, a small
- 7:16Appalachian town of 300 people. At the time, the May brothers Ed
- 7:21and Freddie had been playing in their schoolyard with their
- 7:24friend Tommy Higher. The boys then witnessed a bright
- 7:27red light streak across the sky and crash on a nearby farm.
- 7:32After seeing the object crash, the boys rushed to the May home
- 7:36to report what they had seen to Missus May.
- 7:39Taking the children's claim is credible.
- 7:41Missus May then escorted the boys back to where they had seen
- 7:45the object crash. By this time, other onlookers
- 7:48had joined the search party as well, including several other
- 7:51neighborhood children with their parents and the farmer whose
- 7:55land. The object had crashed on the
- 7:58crew could spot smoke rising out of the field along with a
- 8:01strobing. Or pulsating red light once they
- 8:05were about. 50 feet away from the site, they could see that
- 8:08there was a large burning object sticking out of the ground.
- 8:12One of the people's dogs broke away and began barking and
- 8:16running towards the light. It promptly returned moments
- 8:19later, shaking with its tail between its legs.
- 8:23They soon began to smell and see an odd mist, a mist that made
- 8:28their eyes and noses burn. As they move forward towards the
- 8:31object, they noticed two small lights over to the left of the
- 8:35fire. The farmer shine his flashlight
- 8:37towards them and this light revealed a strange and
- 8:40terrifying looking creature. Among the onlookers was an army
- 8:45soldier who would later describe the creature as being at least
- 8:4810 feet tall with a blood red body and a green face that
- 8:52seemed to glow. He also said that the creature
- 8:55may have had claws for hands. It was too hard to tell with how
- 8:59dense the noxious mist was at the time.
- 9:03When the creature was illuminated, it emitted an ear
- 9:06piercing shriek and began hissing at the search part as it
- 9:09slowly but. Menacingly began to glide
- 9:12towards them. Fearing for their lives, the
- 9:15group fled the field in utter panic.
- 9:18Upon returning home, Missus May contacted the local sheriff as
- 9:22well as a news reporter. Both contacted parties, then
- 9:25conducted several interviews with those originally present.
- 9:29The sheriff, along with his deputy, returned to the site
- 9:32later that night in search of the creature, but nothing was
- 9:35found except for a charred hole in the ground.
- 9:37As well as a sickening burnt metallic odor still prevailing,
- 9:42Early the next morning a reporter visited the site of the
- 9:45encounter for a second time and discovered 2 tracks in the mud
- 9:50as well as traces of a thick black liquid.
- 9:53He immediately reported them as being possible signs of a saucer
- 9:57landing. That wasn't the end of the
- 9:59monster, however. Just two days after the original
- 10:03siding, another siding took place that would later become
- 10:06synonymous with the creature. A couple was taking a leisurely
- 10:10drive through the mountains of Frametown, West Virginia, at
- 10:14dusk when they experienced a similar horror.
- 10:18Their car suddenly stalled. And they were forced to pull
- 10:21over onto the shoulder of the road while attempting to figure
- 10:25out what was wrong with the engine.
- 10:27They were greeted with a putrid, sulfuric odor.
- 10:30As they searched around as to what could be the cause of the
- 10:33smell, they spotted a. Creature in the brush, just feet
- 10:36away from their vehicle. The woman screamed at the side
- 10:40of the monster as it began to glide towards them.
- 10:43Panicked, the couple ran back into their vehicle.
- 10:46Locked the doors and began to attempt to start the car.
- 10:50As the creatures circled their vehicle attempting to attack the
- 10:53occupants inside, they managed to start their vehicle and race
- 10:57back off into town. In a later interview, the
- 11:00creature. Was described as having a blood
- 11:02red body, reptilian in appearance, along with a green
- 11:06glowing face. The couple also described a
- 11:09strange mist that blanketed the area for a good mile or so, and
- 11:14that this mist was filled with strange electrical charges that
- 11:17could be seen like small flickers of lightning as they
- 11:20drove through it. After the stories were published
- 11:23in the local newspaper, they soon made it onto the national
- 11:27stage and for a short time terrified both natives and the
- 11:31rest of the country alike. The terror also supposedly
- 11:34prompted the government to conduct an investigation of
- 11:38their own. The original author of the
- 11:40articles was a man named Gray. Barker, who would later become a
- 11:44prominent UFO writer. Barker claimed that two men,
- 11:47dressed in all black, visited his office several weeks after
- 11:51he had written the articles about the monster.
- 11:53And the local paper. These men in black described
- 11:56themselves as magazine writers and were insistent that Barker
- 12:00provide all information he had on the.
- 12:03Creature Barker later stated that these men would not
- 12:06disclose the magazine they worked for and only referred to
- 12:09themselves with numbers in regards to their identity.
- 12:13After providing the little details he had about the initial
- 12:16encounters, he was then told to not write any more articles
- 12:19about the creature or else the men disappeared after their
- 12:25meeting with Barker and the creature has not been spotted
- 12:29since those days in 1952. So was the monster real?
- 12:35Given that there were at least a total of 8 to 10 eyewitnesses
- 12:38who saw the monster, one being an army soldier, it certainly
- 12:42makes one ask the question. UFO sightings were becoming very
- 12:46prevalent during this time in American history, and with so
- 12:49many things being seen in the sky, surely there may have been
- 12:52something more to the story. If it wasn't something tangible,
- 12:56it would have had to have been a very cleverly hatched
- 12:58conspiracy, perhaps to put a small town on the map.
- 13:02This is certainly plausible, but considering that it took decades
- 13:06for the small town to embrace the creature and once so feared,
- 13:09and also considering that the town even today has less
- 13:12residence than it did in 1952, it seems rather unlikely.
- 13:17But what do you think? Make sure to let us know down in
- 13:20the comments. Below, don't forget to like this
- 13:22video and subscribe with the bell so that you never miss a
- 13:25new. Upload They have lived on the
- 13:30Earth for millions of years, an ancient type of life, older than
- 13:35humankind. We take them for granted as we
- 13:38pass by them on the sidewalks and parks, and eat them as food.
- 13:44Our seemingly benign neighbors of the vegetable Kingdom are an
- 13:47essential part of life. However, some legends suggest
- 13:52that the innocent green leaves of plants may hide something
- 13:56more sinister. It was 1874 when German explorer
- 14:45Carl Leche was combing through the jungles of Madagascar when
- 14:49he encountered A horrifying sight.
- 14:52He had found a local tribe known as the Makoto, and they appeared
- 14:55to be in the process of performing a ritual.
- 14:58A woman laying trance tied up and at her feet was a strange
- 15:03tree. All lay still when suddenly the
- 15:06tree sprung to life, its limbs flailed like snakes and the
- 15:11woman screamed. They wrapped around her body and
- 15:15pulled her into the midst where she was eaten alive as a human
- 15:19sacrifice. This account, as terrifying as
- 15:22it is, was a hoax allegedly written by Edmund Spencer and
- 15:27published in The New York World on April 26th, 1874.
- 15:32Though this tale was discredited, Chase Osborne, a
- 15:35former governor of Michigan, claimed in his book that the
- 15:38tale was well known in Madagascar.
- 15:41He stated. I don't know whether the Tiger's
- 15:44tree really exists or whether the blood curdling stories are
- 15:47pure myth. Its story serves enough of a
- 15:50purpose if it interests you, and one of the least known spots of
- 15:54the. World the year was 1891 when Mr.
- 15:59Dunstan, a naturalist from New Orleans, had spent almost two
- 16:03years in Central America. He had been busy gathering
- 16:06specimens and one of the swamps surrounding the Great Lakes of
- 16:10Nicaragua. He heard his dog cry in the
- 16:12distance as if it was in pain. He ran to the spot of the sound
- 16:17to find his dog covered in a web of roots.
- 16:21The network of fibers clung to the animal with countless small
- 16:24sucker like mouths which tore away skin and flesh before being
- 16:29removed. The native men who were
- 16:31assisting Mr. Dunstan were horrified by the plant, which
- 16:35they referred to as the Devil's Snare.
- 16:38This story appeared as an article in Lucifer magazine in
- 16:41September of the same year, and much like the previous story, it
- 16:45is believed to be fake. In the 1887 book Sea and Land,
- 16:51author JW Buell described a plant native to Africa and
- 16:55Central America called the Yativio.
- 16:58This name came from the hissing sound which the plant would
- 17:01make, similar to the Spanish phrase yativo, meaning I see
- 17:07you. It supposedly had poisonous
- 17:09spines that resembled snakes that would grab any and all
- 17:12animals that would come near it. However, this story has never
- 17:17been confirmed. So are man eating plants real?
- 17:21Aside from the many depictions in movies, books and television,
- 17:25only legends and hoaxes hint at the possibility of vegetation
- 17:29capable of eating human beings alive.
- 17:32True carnivorous plants do exist, however, and consume
- 17:35insects in horrific ways and have for thousands of years.
- 17:39Our Earth's history is extensive and it is possible that there
- 17:42are many species which have not yet been discovered.
- 17:46Perhaps in the primordial past plants existed which were large
- 17:49enough to trap and even eat our distant ancestors.
- 17:53Maybe in some far off corner of our planet and some deep and
- 17:57unexplored jungle, there is a plant that could swallow you
- 18:00whole. But what do you think?

- 18:18As always, this has been Cody here at Mystery Archives.
- 18:25Thank you SO. Much for watching and have
- 18:26yourself a wonderful Have you ever had the sense that
- 18:42something bad was going to happen right before it did?
- 18:46Did you perhaps see anything? Strange Signs and omens before
- 18:50catastrophe have existed for centuries.
- 18:54Sometimes these hints of the future are found in the heavens,
- 18:57and other times they take the form of a dark and foreboding
- 19:01spirit. One such creature has captured
- 19:04the attention of the public consciousness since it was cited
- 19:07in the 1960s. Some speculate that it never
- 19:10existed, while others see it as a demon that has heralded
- 19:14disasters from all over the world throughout the years.
- 19:17Today we will be discovering the unexplained by delving into the
- 19:21mystery of the Mothman. Here on Mystery Archives,
- 19:43the night approached quickly as five men dug a grave in Clinton
- 19:47in West Virginia during their exertion.
- 19:51They looked up to witness a dark shadow flying in the sky just
- 19:55above the tree line. The men later described it as a
- 19:59brown winged creature and insisted that what they saw was
- 20:03not a bird. Three days later, on November
- 20:0615th of 1966, two young couples from Point Pleasant, WV enjoyed
- 20:12a leisurely night time drive. Their outing of choice was a
- 20:16zone locally known as the TNT area.
- 20:20The region received this title due to its history of the site
- 20:23as a former World War 2 munitions plant.
- 20:27Roger and Linda Scarberry sat in front of their 1957 Chevy, with
- 20:31Steve and Mary Mallett accompanying them in the back
- 20:34seat. Their watches ticked close to
- 20:37midnight as the car's headlamps fell upon the shadows ahead of
- 20:40them. The light revealed a large Gray
- 20:43winged. Creature with demonic red.
- 20:45Eyes perched at the tree line screaming, they speed as the.
- 20:49Creature took off into the air after them.
- 20:52The trees and roads blurred as the speedometer approached 100
- 20:55mph. They gasped as they discovered
- 20:58that this unholy monster kept up at a supernatural pace.
- 21:03The couples reached the edge of town with no sign of the
- 21:05creature as they began to discuss amongst themselves what
- 21:08they had seen. They soon noticed the beast
- 21:11beside the road and the beast took off into the air where it
- 21:14disappeared. They hurried and reported the
- 21:17encounter to the local sheriff deputy and they described the
- 21:21beast as a large flying man with 10 foot wings.
- 21:25The deputy and the couples held a press conference where they
- 21:28shared their story and it was at this time that the Cryptid
- 21:31received its iconic name, the Mothman.
- 21:38For the next 13 months, after the initial sightings, the
- 21:42Mothman would be seen over 100 times.
- 21:45In addition, there were witnesses who claimed to be
- 21:48harassed by the men in black who threatened them to not talk
- 21:51about the creature. These sightings seem to escalate
- 21:55until December 15th of 1967. Drivers aboard the Sterling
- 22:00Silver Bridge found themselves in a cold rush hour.
- 22:03Bumper to bumper. Traffic clogged the 1928
- 22:06structure to a frigate halt. Soon people began to feel like
- 22:11something was very wrong. The metal shuttered and the
- 22:15bridge finally collapsed, plunging many people into the
- 22:19icy river below. 46 of them in total, would lose their lives
- 22:24and tube. The victims would never be found
- 22:26again, but would become known as the Silver Bridge.
- 22:30Collapse was the worst bridge accident in American history at
- 22:33the time. The Silver Bridge had been
- 22:36nearly 40 years old. It was poorly maintained and had
- 22:39been carrying large loads far beyond what it was designed to
- 22:42support. An investigation of the bridge
- 22:45discovered the cause of a small .1 inch defect in the 13th steel
- 22:49pin eye bar on the bridge that had been improperly
- 22:52manufactured. What is strange about this event
- 22:55is the presence of several omens prior to its collapse.
- 22:59Several people had nightmares of people floating down the river
- 23:03and Christmas packages floating in the water.
- 23:06Even stranger, there was said to be sightings of the Mothman near
- 23:09the bridge right before the incident.
- 23:18Afterwards, however, the creature seemed.
- 23:20To vanish, Explanations for the Mothman range from skeptical to
- 23:31bizarre. Wildlife biologist Robert L
- 23:34Smith told reporters that the sightings all fit the
- 23:37description of the Sandhill Crane, a large American crane
- 23:41almost as tall as a man with a 7 foot long wingspan featuring
- 23:45reddish coloring around its eyes.
- 23:48Others believed it was an alien, citing the appearance of the Men
- 23:51in Black and the strange figure who deserves a video of his own
- 23:55known as Andrew Colt. Some believed it to be a demon
- 23:59or spirit, pointing to the wings, humanoid features and red
- 24:03eyes. Among the more interesting
- 24:06theories is the Mothman is the manifestation of a 200 year old
- 24:10curse. The legend says that when Chief
- 24:13Kornstalk and his son were killed by American colonist on
- 24:16November 10th, 1777, he placed a curse upon that land in which he
- 24:22died. Since that day, strange events
- 24:25have occurred in the area, such as a monument erected in honor
- 24:28of the colonists being. Destroyed by lightning twice as
- 24:33well as the first sighting of the Mothman is said to have
- 24:35occurred on January of 1926 when the Zion Ti dam in China
- 24:40collapsed, releasing nearly 40 billion gallons of water to the
- 24:44surrounding farms, killing over 15,000 people.
- 24:49Earlier in the month, locals had described a man dragon that
- 24:52could be seen hovering over the dam right before it collapsed.
- 24:56And on September 10th of 1978, a group of miners were heading to
- 25:01work in Freiburg, Germany when they were confronted by a
- 25:04strange sighting a creature with huge wings, no head and glowing
- 25:09red eyes in its chest. The beast let out a horrible
- 25:13shriek and the men ran. An hour later the mine collapsed
- 25:19and in another instance during 1985 when many of the plant
- 25:23workers and citizens of Chernobyl, Ukraine saw a large
- 25:27bird like creature with the body of a man flying around the
- 25:30nuclear facility, some claimed it had red eyes.
- 25:36On April 26th of 1986, the same creature was spotted by the
- 25:40Chernobyl catastrophe days before the events of 911 in
- 25:452001. Here in the United States,
- 25:48several people said they saw a strange creature flying near the
- 25:51Twin Towers, and in another instance in June 2007, Rothman
- 25:57sightings occurred near the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis.
- 26:01A month later, the bridge collapsed, killing thirteen
- 26:04people and injuring 145 others. And in the most recent sighting
- 26:10in Fukushima, Japan. Two witnesses outside of
- 26:20Fukushima power plant heard a loud screech.
- 26:23And saw a red winged creature atop.
- 26:25Of the plant. any of these claims the truth?
- 26:37Plenty of sightings can be claimed, but no tangible
- 26:39evidence has emerged of the creature beyond eyewitness
- 26:42accounts and the folklore surrounding the monster.
- 26:47We may never know what people saw during the November nights
- 26:50in Virginia, but the memory of the Mothman still flaps its
- 26:54wings above the hearts and minds of the town of Point Pleasant.
- 26:58If you find yourself there, you might see the sculpture of a
- 27:01Mothman, or maybe you might just catch a glimpse of the legend
- 27:06itself. But what do you think?
- 27:09Is the Mothman real or just coincidental superstition?

- 27:43Have you ever seen a human face on a doll that seemed off?
- 27:47That even though all the ingredients of a face were
- 27:50there, it just didn't quite feel right?
- 27:53During the 1960s in West Virginia, at the same time
- 27:56period of the Mothman sightings, a man encountered a strange
- 28:00humanoid being with a disturbing grin that shook him to his core.
- 28:06On today's episode of Discover the Unexplained, we will be
- 28:10diving into the uncanny valley. As
- 28:39on October 16th, 1966, two young boys named Martin and James
- 28:44talked as they. Made their way through 4th St.
- 28:47and New Jersey. Their conversation stopped when
- 28:50James eyes froze on something behind Martin.
- 28:54James asked who's that guy standing behind you?
- 28:57They both look towards a chain link fence and behind it stood
- 29:01an unnaturally tall bald man wearing a metallic like suit.
- 29:06He had no ears or nose. The man looked at them with
- 29:10intense and inhuman eyes before he grinned.
- 29:15Feeling terror, they both ran from the man, who chased them
- 29:19down until they managed to escape.
- 29:24Just a few weeks later, Woodrow Darenberger drove his truck on
- 29:28Interstate 77 in Parkersburg, WV Suddenly, he heard a crash, and
- 29:35he slammed on his brakes as an unidentified vehicle landed in
- 29:38front of him. He described the object as like
- 29:42an old fashioned kerosene lamp chimney flaring at both ends,
- 29:47narrowing down to a small neck and then enlarging in a Gray
- 29:51bulge in the center. The vehicle shined a bright
- 29:55light that blinded Darenberger, and he saw the dark shape of a
- 29:59man materialize out of the craft and the man approached his truck
- 30:03window. Darenberger stated that he
- 30:07looked like an ordinary man. 6 feet tall, probably around 35 or
- 30:12so, with all of her tan skin, dark brown hair, and a metallic
- 30:17coat. The man grinned intensely
- 30:20through his window at Darenberger, and he heard a
- 30:23voice in his head. Say, roll down your window, I
- 30:26want to talk to you. During their conversation, the
- 30:30man never moved his mouth out of the grin or physically talked.
- 30:35All of his messages were spoken directly into Darenberger's
- 30:38head. The man introduced himself as
- 30:41Andrew Colt and said that he meant no harm.
- 30:45He was interested in learning about our planet and their talk
- 30:48lasted for about 10 minutes and Colt said we eat, we breathe, we
- 30:54sleep and we even bleed as you do before heading back to his
- 30:59craft, Colt then told Darenberger.
- 31:03We will see you again in his report to the.
- 31:07Police Darenberger described him as courteous and friendly, and
- 31:11as it happens, this would not be the last time that Cold would
- 31:14visit him. For the next month, Darenberger
- 31:20claimed he was visited by Cold many more times, and at one
- 31:24point Cold even took him onto his spaceship and to his home
- 31:28planet, Lanulos and the Ganymede star Cluster.
- 31:33He stated that they wore no clothes on the planet.
- 31:36Cold said that his people had lived on the planet for about
- 31:39125 to 175 Earth years. Cold would also appear at
- 31:45Woodrow 's front door. His wife and children even knew
- 31:48that he was paying him visits and they too would come forward,
- 31:52saying they saw cold as well as other strange.
- 31:55Beings. Woodrow 's wife would later
- 31:58state that these beings were much like us.
- 32:00They travelled in everyday cars, dressed in everyday clothes, but
- 32:05were not human in origin. During the same period in Point
- 32:09Pleasant WV, the Lily family had been reporting poltergeist
- 32:13activity in their home, such as diamond shaped lights.
- 32:17Linda Lily was sleeping one night and awoke to see a man
- 32:21standing over her. She said it was a man, a big
- 32:24man, very broad. I couldn't see his face very
- 32:28well, but I could see that he was grinning at me.
- 32:31He walked around the bed and stood right over me.
- 32:35I screamed again and hid under the covers, and when I looked
- 32:39again he was gone. Why do beings like injured cold
- 32:44frighten us? Why would a smile fill us with a
- 32:47sense of fear or dread? This phenomena is known as the
- 32:52Uncanny valley, and it occurs when something is close to being
- 32:56authentically human, but falls just short enough to unsettle
- 33:00us. This very phenomena could be a
- 33:03clue as to the nature of cold and beings like him.
- 33:08They're human like forms being a facade, a mask just convincing
- 33:12enough to disarm but not convincing enough to fool our
- 33:17instincts. Like with all UFO and alien
- 33:23encounters, skepticism and claims of fraud are abound when
- 33:27it comes to sightings If injured cold.
- 33:30However, multiple witnesses corroborated Woodrow's original
- 33:34encounter on I-77, and some even claimed to witness the craft
- 33:39near his home as well. Woodrow's motives and
- 33:42credibility have been called into question since 1966, but it
- 33:47is interesting to note that the publicity of the event did not
- 33:50provide Woodrow with any positive consequences.
- 33:54He suffered a divorce harassing phone.
- 33:57Calls. Job loss, friend loss,
- 34:00trespassing, ridicule, embarrassment, and depression.
- 34:05He often felt like he was being watched or that his phones were
- 34:08being tapped. His writings would often
- 34:12disappear from his locked house and letters he would send would
- 34:17never reach their destination. Crowds would also often gather
- 34:21in his driveway to catch a glimpse of cold, and at 1.2, men
- 34:26with rifles stalked his home in order to catch the mysterious
- 34:29visitor. I would like to introduce my
- 34:36cohort in this venture, Mr. Ronald Maines, who is the
- 34:40General Manager of WTAPTV and Radio and we are here to ask
- 34:45this gentleman questions and we will be asking questions for the
- 34:49next half hour to 25 minutes. Our guest is Mr. Dernberger,
- 34:55Route #2, Mineral Wells, WV. Mr. Dunn Burger has a very
- 35:00interesting story to tell us this evening.
- 35:03I will give you a thumbnail sketch.
- 35:06To begin with, Whether or not you believe in unidentified
- 35:11flying objects or not is not the point.
- 35:14Whether you believe in what you hear or see on this program is
- 35:18not the point. We are here to talk to a man
- 35:21that allegedly did make contact with such an object within the
- 35:27Parkersburg area. Last evening, November the 2nd,
- 35:311966, at approximately 7:25 PM, the incident allegedly took
- 35:37place on Interstate Hwy. 77 near the interchange of Route #47.
- 35:42This gentleman is a salesman in the area.
- 35:44He has been a resident of the area for the past 50 years and
- 35:48he has given us permission to interview him and to show his
- 35:53face and to call him by name. This in itself takes a lot of
- 35:57initiative. And to be very plain, a lot of
- 36:02know how. Mr. Denberger, in your own
- 36:07words, would you please relate what happened last night?
- 36:11Well, I was. I am a salesman and I drive a
- 36:14truck. And last night, shortly after
- 36:187:00, I was coming from Marietta.
- 36:20OH, coming down Interstate 77. And just before I came to the
- 36:26intersection of drop 47, there was a car past me, overtaking me
- 36:33from behind and following closely Behind this car was this
- 36:40unidentified flying object, and there's a car ahead or the car
- 36:44behind past me. This object was following close
- 36:49behind it and it swerved directly in front of my truck
- 36:52turning crosswise. And when it turned crosswise, it
- 36:56slowed down. It started slowing not abruptly
- 36:59or too fast, but it gave me plenty of time to step on my
- 37:03brakes and slow down with it. But it forced me to come to a
- 37:06complete stop. As soon as I had stopped, there
- 37:11was a door opened in the side of this vehicle and this man
- 37:16stepped out and came directly to me or came to the truck.
- 37:22He walked to the right hand side of the truck.
- 37:24And he told me to roll down the window.
- 37:26He asked me to roll down the window on my right hand side of
- 37:29my truck. And I had done what he asked.
- 37:34And this man stood there and he he first asked me what I was
- 37:38called and I knew he meant my name and I told him my name.
- 37:44And then he asked me, he said, why are you frightened?
- 37:47He said. Don't be frightened.
- 37:49We wish you no harm. And he said, we mean you no
- 37:52harm, we wish you only happiness.
- 37:55And I told him my name. And when I told him my name, he
- 37:59said he was called cold. That was the name that he was
- 38:04called by. And again he told me not to be
- 38:09frightened, which I was. I was, I was very frightened.
- 38:15And as far as I can understand. This was all mental.
- 38:21There was no spoken words from him.
- 38:23I knew what he was asking me, but yet he stood there and his
- 38:28mouth did not move. He had a smile on his face.
- 38:32He was, he appeared very courteous and friendly and after
- 38:38I talked with him a while, he told me he would see me.
- 38:43He said we will see you again, and he left in his vehicle.
- 38:53Woodrow would eventually go to a psychiatrist for an assessment
- 38:57and left with a clean bill of health.
- 39:00Funnily enough, the same doctor would later receive a telepathic
- 39:04communication and called himself.
- 39:09Woodrow would eventually contribute his stories to an
- 39:12author, and they would be published in a 1971 book titled
- 39:16Visitors from Lunalos. Woodrow would move away to
- 39:19escape his past when passing away in 1990 at the age of 74.
- 39:25He never denied his earlier claims, but likely as a result
- 39:29of lifetime of hardship, he simply stopped talking about
- 39:33them. So who is this injured colt?
- 39:40A humanoid alien, a shapeshifter, A hoax, or a demon
- 39:46or spirit. We may never truly know the
- 39:49answer to the identity of this being, but what we do know is
- 39:54that Darenberger and others certainly encountered something
- 39:57sinister and, in spite of a reassuring smile, filled
- 40:02witnesses with dread and fear. It is in situations like this
- 40:08that we must be thankful that our instincts can often save us
- 40:11from trusting. Dangerous.
- 40:13People. That hide malevolence behind a
- 40:16friendly grin. So, was injured cold, real?
- 40:21Maybe, maybe not. But beware, because you might
- 40:27just find yourself in a similar situation, whether it's walking
- 40:31with a friend, driving your car, or sleeping in your own bed.
- 40:37If you ever see a man with a grin, that chills you to the
- 40:40bone. You may have just seen injured
- 40:44cold. Thank you guys so much for
- 40:52watching yet another episode of Discover the Unexplained.
- 40:55Your viewership and support truly means the world to me.
- 40:59And I know I asked this a lot, but please share this video or
- 41:02any one of our other videos on social media.
- 41:05It helps so much when you do. And don't forget to give this
- 41:08video a like and subscribe with the bell if you're new here so
- 41:12that you never miss a new mystery.
- 41:15And until next time, this has been Cody here at Mystery
- 41:18Archives. There are many places which
- 41:24harbor darkness, otherworldly entities that live in the
- 41:28shadows, watching and stalking until the time is right.
- 41:35This is a story about one of those such places that housed a
- 41:38violent and terrifying entity. Today here on Mystery Archives
- 41:44we will be examining the legend of the Bell Witch.
- 42:04In the early 1800s, a man named John Bell moved with his family
- 42:08from North Carolina to Red River, Tennessee.
- 42:12He purchased some land in a large house for his growing
- 42:15family and over the years acquired more land for a total
- 42:19of 328 acres. During those years, Bell was not
- 42:24only busy with his family and his local Community Church.
- 42:27But was also hard at work clearing fields.
- 42:30To make them viable for planting crops, one day in 1817, John
- 42:36Bell was inspecting one of his cornfields when he encountered a
- 42:39strange looking animal sitting in the middle of a cornrow.
- 42:43As he walked closer, he stopped dead in his tracks.
- 42:47He had never seen an animal like this one.
- 42:50It had the body of a dog, but the head of a rabbit.
- 42:53He shot several times at the animal, but it's seemingly
- 42:56vanished, although creeped out. John dismissed the event and
- 43:01continued on with his day. He and his family sat down and
- 43:05had dinner, and then shortly after began to get ready for
- 43:09bed. As the family laid down their
- 43:11heads to sleep, they were startled by loud banging sounds
- 43:16on the outside walls of their log house, gun in hand.
- 43:21John Bell ran outside to discover the source of the
- 43:24noise, only to discover that there was nothing there that he
- 43:28could see. Things were, as a matter of
- 43:31fact, unsettlingly quiet, almost silent outside of the cabin,
- 43:38trying to return to his senses. John reassured his family and
- 43:42they proceeded to return to bed. However, this would be far from
- 43:47the bells last restless night. The mysterious sounds returned
- 43:52the next night just as the bells were attempting to sleep.
- 43:56John. And now his sons as well.
- 43:58Rushed outside to apprehend whoever or.
- 44:01Whatever was causing the disruption but again they were
- 44:05unable to find anything in the weeks that.
- 44:08Followed the bell. Children began waking up
- 44:12frightened. They complained to their parents
- 44:14that rats were gnawing at their bedposts and shaking their beds.
- 44:19Not long after this, the children also complained that
- 44:22their bed covers were being pulled from them and their
- 44:26pillows. Being thrown across the room by
- 44:29something they couldn't see. As time went on, the bells began
- 44:34hearing faint whispering voices, which, too weak to understand,
- 44:39sounded like a feeble old woman singing hymns.
- 44:44The encounters further escalated when the Bell's youngest
- 44:47daughter, Betsy, began experiencing brutal abuse at the
- 44:51hands of an invisible entity. It would pull her hair and slap
- 44:56her relentlessly, often leaving welts and handprints on her face
- 45:02and body. The disturbances, which John
- 45:05Bell told his family to keep a secret, eventually escalated to
- 45:09such a point that he decided to share his family trouble with
- 45:13his closest friend and neighbor, James Johnston.
- 45:17Johnston and his wife spent the night at the Bell home.
- 45:21Where they were subjected to the same terrifying activity that
- 45:24the bells had experienced after having their bed covers removed
- 45:29and slapped repeatedly, Johnston sprang out of his bed and
- 45:33screamed. And the name of the Lord, Who
- 45:37are you and what do you want? There was no response.
- 45:42What started as a whisper? Strengthened over time to the
- 45:46point to where it was loud and unmistakable.
- 45:49The voice sang hymns, quoted scripture, and even carried on
- 45:54intelligent conversations. This included even once quoting
- 45:58word for word. Two sermons that were preached
- 46:01at the same time on the same day.
- 46:04News of the supernatural happenings soon spread outside
- 46:07of the settlement, even to Nashville, where then Major
- 46:11General Andrew Jackson took a keen interest.
- 46:15John Bell and his older sons had fought under General Jackson.
- 46:19In the Battle of New Orleans in 1819, Jackson decided to visit
- 46:24the Bell Farm to see what was really going on for himself.
- 46:28As he approached the Bell Farm with a party of several men,
- 46:32well groomed horses, and a wagon, the wagon suddenly
- 46:35stopped and the horses couldn't pull it.
- 46:38After several minutes of cursing and trying to coax the horses
- 46:42into pulling the wagon, Jackson proclaimed by the Eternal Boys
- 46:47that must be the Bell Witch. This remark was preceded by a
- 46:51disembodied female voice that told Jackson that he could
- 46:54proceed and that she would see him again later that evening.
- 46:59The wagon then was able to be moved again and Jackson and his
- 47:02party made their way to the Bell home, where Jackson proceeded to
- 47:06have a long discussion about a wide range of topics, including
- 47:10the paranormal activity. One of the men in Jackson's
- 47:13party was a supposed witch tamer.
- 47:15He proclaimed this while brandishing a small shiny pistol
- 47:19filled with 1 silver bullet, and said that nothing was happening
- 47:23because of the entity's fear of him.
- 47:25Only seconds after this statement left the man's mouth,
- 47:28he began to jerk violently, his body shifting in different
- 47:32directions. He was then thrown out the front
- 47:35door as everyone in the house heard a loud female voice curse
- 47:39the man as a fraud. Now terrified, Jackson's men
- 47:44begged to leave the Bell Farm. But Jackson, on the other hand,
- 47:47insisted on staying so that he could ascertain if the phenomena
- 47:51was real or not. The men, including Jackson,
- 47:55spent the night, and what happened isn't clear that the
- 47:58crew left very early the following morning and headed
- 48:01back to Nashville. And although it wasn't
- 48:04officially documented, Jackson would later write that he would
- 48:08rather fight the British and New Orleans than to have to fight
- 48:12the Bell Wedge. The paranormal activity
- 48:15continued to plague the family for years to come.
- 48:18It notably caused Betsy Bell, the Bell's eldest daughter, to
- 48:21call off her engagement amongst other notable interactions, and
- 48:26on December 20th, 1820, John Bell had slipped into a coma and
- 48:32took his last breath. The following day, the family
- 48:35found a small vial of unidentified liquid in the
- 48:38cupboard. John Bell Junior gave some to
- 48:42one of the family's cats. Which died within a matter of
- 48:45seconds. The entity then spoke up and
- 48:48said I gave old Jack a big dose of that last night and it fixed
- 48:52him up. John Bell Junior then threw the
- 48:56vial into the fireplace where it burst into a bright bluish
- 49:00flame. John Bell was then formally laid
- 49:03to rest just days later. That wasn't the end of the
- 49:06visitations, however, in April of 1821.
- 49:11The entity visited John Bell's widow Lucy and told her that it
- 49:14would return every seven years and seven years to the day.
- 49:19It did return for the first time and visited with John Bell
- 49:23Junior. The creature discussed a wide
- 49:25range of topics from the origin of life, civilization and more.
- 49:30It was even said to predict things like the Civil War and
- 49:34both. World Wars, among others.
- 49:37This would be the last time the entity was heard from.
- 49:40After a promise to visit the most direct descendant of John
- 49:43Bell in 107 years, the year was 1935 and the closest living
- 49:49relative was Doctor Charles Bailey Bell.
- 49:52Charles did write a. Book about the Bell witch, but
- 49:54never recorded any such visitation and never would.
- 49:59The entity that plugged the Bell family and the Red River
- 50:02settlement over 200 years ago is often blamed for strange and
- 50:06unexplainable manifestations. That occur near the Old Bell
- 50:10Farm today. The faint sounds of people
- 50:12talking, children playing and even an old woman whispering
- 50:17have been reported alongside seeing ghostly figures and lit
- 50:21candles and an empty field for the settlement once was.
- 50:26The Cave, located near the property is said to have
- 50:29originally housed the witch that plagued the bells.
- 50:32Visions of a ghostly woman have been seen over the years since
- 50:36John Bell's demise. Since no one who witnessed the
- 50:47apparition of the Bell Witch is alive today, we can't ever know
- 50:51for sure what happened on that large stretch of land.
- 50:54But the pages of history still whisper the frightening tale,
- 50:57and the legend lives on. Have you ever asked?
- 51:07Yourself if monsters truly exist, have you ever wondered
- 51:12how one might become a monster? In the cold forests of North
- 51:16America, Native American folklore describes a dark and
- 51:20monstrous spirit that was once human, and it tells of how
- 51:25others might be transformed into the same terrifying creature.
- 51:30Join us on this episode of Discover the Unexplained as we
- 51:34go into the woods of the Wendigo here on Mystery Archives.
- 51:59I scoured the forest, searching for any firewood that I could
- 52:02find. Before I could grab a large
- 52:05enough bundle, the bushes behind me rustled.
- 52:09My hair stood on end and I heard my name being called, but I
- 52:13couldn't figure out which direction it was coming from.
- 52:18The voice sounded like my sister, but she just recently
- 52:22left the camping trip, not even an hour ago.
- 52:26The voice sounded wrong, like an animal trying to copy a human.
- 52:31I dropped the bundle and I sprinted as fast as I could.
- 52:36Something crunched the twigs and leaves just behind me, dogging
- 52:41my every step. I could feel a breath on the
- 52:44back of my neck. And when I finally reached the
- 52:47campsite is when the footsteps stopped.
- 52:51When I turned back around, I found nothing.
- 52:56It was evening when me and my parents finally left the
- 52:59campsite, and I looked back from our car window and saw a figure
- 53:03standing at the tree lion staring at me with ghostly eyes.
- 53:09It had dark skin stretched over its body, almost like a corpse.
- 53:14But when I blinked. That vanished into thin air.
- 53:21There have been many such stories reported by those who
- 53:24have claimed to have encountered this mysterious creature known
- 53:28as the Wendigo. The Wendigo originates from
- 53:31Native American folklore in both Canada and the northern United
- 53:35States, is a creature associated with famine, winter death, and
- 53:42cannibalism. The native ethnographer.
- 53:45Basil Johnston described the creature as such.
- 53:49The Wendigo was gone to the point of emaciation, its
- 53:53desiccated skin pulled tightly over its bones, with its bones
- 53:57pushing out over its skin, its complexion the ash Gray of
- 54:02death, and its eyes pushed back deep into its sockets.
- 54:08The Wendigo looked like a skeleton recently descended from
- 54:12a grave. What lips it had were tattered.
- 54:15And bloody, unclean and suffering from superations of
- 54:19the flesh, the Wendigo gave off a strange and eerie odor of
- 54:24death and corruption. The beast's desire for human
- 54:27flesh can never be satisfied, for they are said to grow in
- 54:31proportion to every victim they devour, and they are always
- 54:35hungry. But how are Wendigo's born?
- 54:39What horrible process could produce such a man eating
- 54:41monstrosity of supernatural origin?
- 54:45The answer may be found in the hearts of those that Wendigo has
- 54:48claimed, both in story and in reality.
- 54:54The year was 1879, and for Saskatchewan, Canada, those who
- 55:00knew Swift Runner described him as a likable and trustworthy man
- 55:04who loved his family and was especially fond of his six
- 55:08children. He originally was a guide for
- 55:11the Northwest Mounted Police. Was relieved of this position as
- 55:16a result of his alcoholism. After being expelled from his
- 55:20community, he ventured into the wilderness with his family in
- 55:24the winter of 1878. When Swift returned from the
- 55:29harsh winter in 1879 without his family, he was questioned on
- 55:33their whereabouts and one witness stated he said I could
- 55:38not expect to see any of his family because he was the only
- 55:41one left. During the winter, he hadn't
- 55:45been able to find any food, so slowly but surely, all his
- 55:50relatives had starved to death. Yet Swift Runner looked neither
- 55:54malnourished or starved, and without a proper explanation of
- 55:59his family's absence, his in laws got in touch with the
- 56:02mounted police. The police questioned him and
- 56:06forced him to lead them back to the winter campsite once there.
- 56:11He directed them to an undisturbed grave in the snow,
- 56:14where they found the remains of his oldest son, who Swift Runner
- 56:18had said died during the winter. However, one thing that was not
- 56:23so readily explained were the scattered human bones all over
- 56:26the site. Soon he revealed the events that
- 56:30took place during the fateful winter in 1878.
- 56:36At first, he received terrible. Dreams where the Wendigo
- 56:38attacked him. Trying to convince him to
- 56:41consume his family, he fought back for a time, but eventually
- 56:47he felt the spirit creep over his mind and take control.
- 56:52Soon, Swift Runner was no more. There was only Wendigo finally
- 56:58in control. The Wendigo killed and ate his
- 57:01wife. Then the Spirit killed the rest
- 57:03of his family and hung his young infant before devouring all of
- 57:08them. He was only 25 miles from food
- 57:11supplies and would later admit that he did it purely for the
- 57:15enjoyment of consuming human flesh.
- 57:19Horrified and disgusted by this revelation, the mounted police
- 57:23arrested Swift Runner and he was tried, found guilty and
- 57:27sentenced to death by hanging. On December 20th, Swift stood on
- 57:32the scaffold and said I could kill myself with a tomahawk.
- 57:36He offered. Save the hangman further
- 57:39trouble, This event marked the first formal execution in
- 57:43Western Canada as a result of cases of cannibalism like that
- 57:48of Swift Runner. Some have coined the term
- 57:50Wendigo psychosis as a possible explanation for the culture
- 57:54bound phenomena of sudden cannibalism among some native
- 57:58peoples, though this has been met with criticism and even
- 58:03outright mockery. But is it mere psychosis?
- 58:10Or is there truly something supernatural present within
- 58:13these tales? The Wendigo has haunted pop
- 58:18culture for decades, with its familiar antlers popping up in
- 58:21horror movies and video games alike.
- 58:25But is the Wendigo real? Encounters with the creature
- 58:28have been posted on sites like Reddit with even more eyewitness
- 58:32testimonies like these, but neither can be confirmed easily.
- 58:36And all have similar elements to that of other frightening
- 58:39creatures said to haunt the forest of the world.
- 58:43Other creatures such as dogmen, goatmen, and even skinwalkers.
- 58:49The feeling of being watched of that of a strange emaciated
- 58:52creature makes sighting of these beings almost demonic in nature.
- 58:57Whether they are truly physical beings or spirits capable of
- 59:01possession is anyone's guess, one thing that is for certain.
- 59:06Is that the Wendigo originates from folklore, where its
- 59:09presence describes a taboo against greed, gluttony, and
- 59:13cannibalism among tribes. That certainly would have a good
- 59:17reason to prevent their existence.
- 59:21Early contact with these tribes from European settlers even
- 59:24compared the Wendigo to that of a similar creature of their own
- 59:28folklore, the werewolf, but similar to that of the werewolf.
- 59:33Can we say that such an otherworldly monster really
- 59:36exists? Or is it just another way of
- 59:39illustrating the beast that dwells within man himself?
- 59:44Perhaps some things will just have to stay unexplained.
