- 0:40Yeah, let's get this. This is a real treat for me.
- 0:43For a couple reasons. One, this guy is the voice of
- 0:47track and field this this setup might not be good enough for
- 0:50him. He may give me tips on how to
- 0:53how to record here because this is the real voice of track and.
- 0:56Field. Right here live at the Denver,
- 1:00Co USTCC TA2022 convention, and this was completely unplanned.
- 1:04I had no idea this was going to happen.
- 1:06So I'm just overwhelmed that you're here.
- 1:07Please introduce yourself to the audience.
- 1:09My name is Mike J from Iowa and. Yeah, I'm tickled to death to be
- 1:13here. I was invited by Sam Seams from
- 1:16down at the NCAA cross country meet and then of course the
- 1:19break relays are presenting the symposium.
- 1:21So I'm just doing some intros and helping out with awards and
- 1:25and living the high life, man. This has been on my bucket list
- 1:28to come to this, but I had no reason to come.
- 1:31I was never a high school coach, never a college coach, and I
- 1:33haven't coached for 10 years, but I just.
- 1:36I like to hang around. Coaches are good people.
- 1:38Amen. So it's it's it worked out.
- 1:41It's awesome. And you know, Mike, there's a
- 1:44lot of reasons I like you. One, not only your skill set as
- 1:48far as what you do is the announcer, direct relays and
- 1:50other meets and things like that.
- 1:51That's amazing. It's kind of cool.
- 1:52Unique talent, right? I don't know that I can have
- 1:54anybody else come on that does this.
- 1:56But Blake, I had Blake to start off.
- 1:57He just did the meat at Spokane where he did that.
- 2:00You also run an amazing is it fair to say charity event?
- 2:04I want to make sure the foundation.
- 2:06Yeah, that gives back to young people.
- 2:09I mean, come on from your heart. That is just really, really
- 2:11amazing. And then, you know, you host
- 2:13your own podcast, which is cool. I love that.
- 2:16But one of the things that I really like, I really like
- 2:18niche, right? And so you know, track is its
- 2:21own niche, right? And you?
- 2:22Have pole vaulters. That's kind of a niche right
- 2:23here. But there are a slight few
- 2:25people out there that niche down to their state track and field.
- 2:29And you are. I love how you introduce
- 2:31yourself. Mike J from Iowa.
- 2:33You are Mr. Iowa, when it comes to the history of the sport in
- 2:38the state, advocating for the athletes and coaches I've always
- 2:43blown away. I can't imagine what kind of
- 2:44database you have when a meet goes off at the Alabama
- 2:48Invitational and you're like so and so that went to Boonville
- 2:50High School in this high school and this used to coach it, you
- 2:53and I, I just love that aspect. Of it, a lot of it's from memory
- 2:57and I hope that will stick with me for a while, but it's just.
- 3:02I I lucked out Mike and I'll just tell you the back story.
- 3:05In 1975 I was a sophomore in high school.
- 3:08I tell people I had to work my butt off to be mediocre and
- 3:11would never never even dreamed about qualifying to the Drake
- 3:14Relays or the state meet. But my a small town of Columbus
- 3:19Junction 1500 people and my head coach said, hey we've got an
- 3:22extra ticket do you want to go? So I went to Drake, went to
- 3:24state in the spring, and I've never missed either one since
- 3:271975 and. I credit my high school coaches
- 3:31for instilling a love of the sport got into the relays in 75
- 3:35and Jim Duncan on the mic and I remember telling coach Purdy I'm
- 3:38going to do this someday and that's really so I have and it's
- 3:42just been you know and we've got really good kids in Iowa you
- 3:47know we're and I and and we understand that you know you're
- 3:51not going to get a lot of recruits from Florida and Texas
- 3:54and and and that's Okay but we'll get enough of them to.
- 3:57To blend in with the Iowa kids and and most of the good
- 4:01programs in Iowa regardless of the sport, they get three star
- 4:06recruits and make them a 5 before they graduate and you
- 4:09know, and they don't come in as A5 and I've always loved that
- 4:12work ethic and so it's just it's been a labor of love for me and
- 4:16our foundation. You know when I coach we always
- 4:19had kids that had a need. So it's.
- 4:22It's I've got great supporters. I just saw Rich Benoit down here
- 4:26on the way, you know, and he says I'm going to send you guys
- 4:28some shoes to give the kids. And my favorite story is about 3
- 4:33weeks ago I get a text from Jenny Simpson who is now.
- 4:37She's been with New Balance her entire career, now with Puma.
- 4:40Right, she said. I've got a closet full of New
- 4:42Balance spikes. Do you want them?
- 4:44And so she sent me a great big box, 39 pairs of spikes.
- 4:48She signed a singlet and a pair of spikes and we raffled them
- 4:53off on our track coming clap two weeks ago and made over $800.
- 4:58So Mike, as we wrap up, where can people go?
- 5:00Because first of all, you blessed me with a shirt, the
- 5:03track guy shirt and. And, you know, and I get shirts
- 5:05from around. I mean, I've got them.
- 5:07Yeah, I see everybody. People send them to me.
- 5:09I'm so, so blessed. And I'm not going to lie.
- 5:11That track shirt that you gave me?
- 5:13It was at the Nutty Comb invitation.
- 5:15Yeah, absolutely. Is the most comfortable shirt I
- 5:18own. I mean, I don't know what the
- 5:19material is. They're called Trible.
- 5:21It's amazing, my kids insisted. Dad, you just can't get an old
- 5:24cotton shirt because everybody has those.
- 5:26So tell us where this will be on the podcast all through 2023.
- 5:29Where can we go to for those kind of items?
- 5:31If we have shoes, we want to donate to this.
- 5:33Where can we go? Track Guy found.
- 5:35Station.com, trackguyfoundation.com and all
- 5:38kinds of drop down menus and and one thing we're kind of proud of
- 5:42we just did it this year for the very first time.
- 5:45We have track meeting posters that coaches can download and
- 5:49we've got got the bio of two outstanding former Iowa preps on
- 5:53there. And so if we're going to have a
- 5:55track meetings, got a place to fill out where to meet and what
- 5:57time and lastly January 25th we're going to wind up, we're
- 6:01going to. We get wound up, I should say
- 6:04our track guy, speaker series events again.
- 6:06We had eight of them around the state over 2 years before COVID
- 6:10and last year at the NCAA Indoor Birmingham.
- 6:13Dan O'Brien come up to me, said Mike.
- 6:15I want to do something about the foundation.
- 6:17So Dan O'Brien's going to be there January 25th and a couple
- 6:21of our Paralympia athletes from Iowa, and we've got an
- 6:24Allamerican Catholic from the University of Iowa, Austin West,
- 6:27and he and Dan are going to close the show with a 45 minute
- 6:30conversation between. One of America's one of the
- 6:34world's best ever Olympic gold medalist talking to an up and
- 6:37Comer. So it'll be fun.
- 6:39So track guy, foundation.com, you got to go there, support,
- 6:42he's doing great things. And Mike, I'm just so thankful
- 6:44for. You, man.
- 6:45Thank you. Thank you for what you do for
- 6:47our sport. I look forward to your tweets
- 6:48every day, man. I really do.
